Team effort makes for a positive finish for the Stoner Car Care team

The Stoner/Automatic Racing team makes a fast change of a major component to take the checkered flag in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season finale

BRASELTON, Ga. (30 September 2022) – Stoner Car Care Racing fielded by Automatic Racing put together a true team effort over the past 24 hours, fixing a major cam shaft issue to put the car on the Fox Factory 120 grid and to take the final IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge checkered flag of the season.

Braselton native Casey Carden joined team veteran Ramin Abdolvahabi behind the wheel of the No. 09 Stoner Car Care Aston Martin Vantage GT4. The Grand Sport class qualified late on Thursday afternoon, and Abdolvahabi put the car in 20th position on the starting grid despite a red flag that ruined his fast lap and left him with just one dash to set a quick time.

But when the team returned to the garage, they discovered a cam shaft failure that necessitated a complete change out of the part – which is easier said than done, as the cam shaft is deeply buried in the engine compartment. The team’s mechanics methodically took apart the front of the car, changed the part in record time, and hustled the Aston Martin to the grid.

Taking the green flag in the 39-car field, Abdolvahabi settled into a solid race pace quickly, battling for position and laying down consistent laps. Setting the team’s quick race lap of 1:29.118 on lap nine, he avoided multiple cars going off course or making contact, though the race ran caution-free his entire stint.

Making solid passes and taking advantage of issues with cars ahead, Abdolvahabi worked his way up to seventh position before coming to pit lane and handing the car to Carden.

“The car felt good; more than a little traffic to deal with, but it felt good,” said Abdolvahabi. “Surprisingly the whole stint went without a yellow which is kind of crazy for Road Atlanta, but I was doing my time so all in all, a good stint. Despite the cam shaft problem, it’s been a good weekend. Casey knows the place, it was great working with him. The team always comes together and gives a car to us that we can drive, and that’s all we can ask for.”

Carden figures he has “tens of thousands of miles” at Road Atlanta, having grown up in Braselton and raced at the track most of his life. He came out of pit lane P22, but unfortunately mired in the TCR field. But more unfortunately, Carden was hit from behind late in the race, going up through the Esses, nearly putting him off track and out of the race. He recovered quickly, though with a damaged car. With an outstanding effort, he brought the car home P23.

“When I came out of the pits, I didn’t find my rhythm as fast as I would have liked and when you get caught up in a situation you shouldn’t be in, things happen,” said Carden. “We got dealt a pretty cruel card with some contact and were just fortunate enough to bring it to the finish, because we don’t quit and certainly at least wanted to deliver a finish for the team. It was a wonderful experience with a wonderful team. They brought a good car and did everything to provide a really good weekend for everybody involved. Everyone is super professional and I hope this isn’t the last time.”

Carden and Automatic Racing team manager David Russell have known each other for the better part of a decade, and while disappointed with the result, Russell was pleased with the effort from both team and drivers.

“A large part of the race for us was getting the car to the grid because we learned last night that one of the cam shafts had gone awry, so we had to fix that,” said Russell. “It’s a fair amount of expose because we had to take the whole front of the car off to do that. I was really proud of the guys because they got that done in time and they got it done properly. Big thanks to Aston Martin with (Aston Martin motorsports partner/distributor) CSJ Motorsports and their guys, they were super helpful in that process. It was a good weekend all in all, a joy and pleasure to have Ramin and Casey with us.”

The Stoner Car Care team continues to support End Alzheimer’s Racing, carrying decals on the car to help their efforts to raise funds and awareness.

The Stoner Car Care Racing team will start the 2023 Michelin Pilot Challenge season at the Roar Before the Rolex 24, January 20-22.

No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 Earn Hard-Fought Third Place Starting Position for the MOTUL Petit Le Mans

Braselton, GA. (September 30, 2022) — The final qualifying of the 2022 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and of the DPi era, took place Friday, setting the grid for the famed MOTUL Petit Le Mans. Ricky Taylor piloted the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 around the 12-turn road course to post a lap time of 01:08.802 (132.902 mph) and will start Saturday’s season finale in third position after a very close qualifying session amongst competitors. Utilizing every inch of the track in hopes of earning a pole position, Taylor slid off into the Turn 5 gravel in the closing minutes but recovered with no damage to the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05, securing a second row starting position.

With the result, the blue and black squad’s season points total increases to 3,096, and they enter tomorrow’s enduro 14 points ahead of their rivals in the sister Acura team. With pole position for the other Acura today, the marque is guaranteed to secure the drivers’, teams’ and manufacturers’ championships in the race. All that is left to be seen is which Acura squad will take the crown.

“Qualifying was important for points,” said Ricky Taylor. “Going into it, if we outqualified the No. 60 Meyer Shank Acura, they had a lot to lose in terms of championship points. So, we were trying to increase the gap over 20 points which would’ve made a big difference for tomorrow. We would have loved to get the pole and qualify ahead of the No. 60, but in the scheme of the points it didn’t change a whole lot. I’m feeling good since it’s such a long race and the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura team does such a good job strategizing and putting us in a good position. I’m very confident in our lineup and our team compared to them over the course of 10 hours. I’d put my two teammates up against those guys any day. I think we are all feeling optimistic and strong for tomorrow.”

Green flag for the 25th Anniversary of MOTUL Petit Le Mans waves at 12:10 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 1 with full 10-hour coverage streaming on Peacock, and partial television coverage on NBC from 12:00-3:00 p.m. ET. The night stints will be covered on USA Network between 7:00-10:30 p.m. ET.
    DPi STARTING GRID:

1.) Meyer Shank Racing with Curb-Agajanian (No. 60 Acura ARX-05) Oliver Jarvis, Tom Blomqvist & Helio Castroneves (133.381 mph)

2.) Cadillac Chip Ganassi Racing (No. 02 Cadillac DPi) Earl Bamber, Alex Lynn & Ryan Hunter-Reay (132.929 mph)

3.) Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 (No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05) Ricky Taylor, Filipe Albuquerque & Brendon Hartley (132.902 mph)

  • CORVETTE RACING AT ROAD ATLANTA: Getting Closer to the Front

CORVETTE RACING AT ROAD ATLANTA: Getting Closer to the Front

Garcia takes fifth in GTD PRO ahead of 10-hour Petit Le Mans finale

BRASELTON, Ga. (Sept. 30, 2022) – Antonio Garcia and Corvette Racing will start on the third row of the GT Daytona (GTD) category and fifth in GTD PRO on Saturday for the 10-hour Petit Le Mans – the final race of this year’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Garcia set a best lap of 1:19.444 (115.099 mph) around Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R. He will team with Jordan Taylor and Nicky Catsburg as the race goes green at 12:10 p.m. ET (NBC, Peacock, XM 207).

Garcia was 0.609 seconds off Jack Hawksworth’s pole-winning time in GTD PRO. However, there is only a 0.165-second margin from third to fifth.

As has been the case at every IMSA round this season, it’s the first event for Corvette Racing at Road Atlanta in the GTD category after eight years in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class. Compared to previous years, the GTD-spec Corvette runs with more weight, less power, an anti-lock braking system and a spec Michelin tire.

This year’s Petit Le Mans is the 25th running of the endurance classic with Corvette Racing looking for its ninth class victory since its first race there in 1999… but first since 2010. That long-awaited victory would help Garcia and Taylor secure second place in the GTD PRO Drivers Championship and also go a long way toward winning the Michelin Endurance Cup – a collection of the four premier long-distance races for the WeatherTech Championship.

The season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona and Petit Le Mans bookend the Endurance Cup, which sees Chevrolet second in the Manufacturers standings entering Road Atlanta. Garcia, Taylor and Catsburg won the Endurance Cup’s second round – the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring – in March to move into contention.

The 10-hour Petit Le Mans is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 1. The race will air live on NBC from noon-3 p.m. ET and from 7-10:30 p.m. ET on USA. Peacock will have live flag-to-flag streaming from noon-10:30 p.m. ET. IMSA Radio will provide live audio coverage Saturday on IMSA.com, XM 207 and SiriusXM Online 992.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – QUALIFIED FIFTH IN GTD PRO: “I wouldn’t consider that decent. My lap was probably decent but I feel like I had a tiny bit more. It was difficult to put together with how the car behaved and how bad traffic was. Traffic interaction wasn’t great, and that killed a little momentum. That’s the same for everyone.

“When you come to these kind of races where the car count is big and Road Atlanta is only an 80-second lap, your chances of getting in the way of someone or someone getting in your way are higher. It’s difficult to really gauge when you have to push and when do you have your time to go and try for a quick one. When I decided to go, it wasn’t a great moment. I had two cars coming out of the pits and because of that it snowballs into bigger problems. It’s never easy and never easy here. We’re up there (in the GTD order). It’s still a 10-hour race, which is a long way so qualifying doesn’t mean a lot. For sure we have some extra feedback on how the car behaves and I’m sure we’ll have a better Corvette tomorrow.”

  • Thaze Competition Announces Plans to Enter the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge GS Class in 2023

Thaze Competition Announces Plans to Enter the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge GS Class in 2023

Mercedes-AMG Motorsports Customer Racing Team Targets 2023 Daytona Opener to Debut Pair of Mercedes-AMG GT4s

DETROIT (September 30, 2022) – Thaze Competition, a racing team based in the metropolitan Detroit area, has announced its plans to enter the 2023 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series as a Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing team with a pair of Mercedes-AMG GT4 entries in the top-tier Grand Sport (GS) class.

The team’s driver lineup is being finalized with Thaze in final negotiations with a driver pairing for one of the two cars.

“Based on my past experience, we want our drivers to have access to the tools typically reserved for factory professionals,” Team Principal Faisal Ahmad said. “What’s been missing for me is that holistic approach to sports car racing where drivers are supported with ongoing mental and physical fitness, nutrition and even media training. Essentially, we want to give our drivers and crew members all of the tools they need to perform at their best and give them a competitive edge.”

Thaze Competition is enlisting the expertise of best-selling author, celebrity fitness and nutrition expert Drew Logan from NBC’s “STRONG,” and is implementing an advanced strength and conditioning program to maximize the performance of its drivers and team members.

“We were inspired by the impressive debut that Trackhouse Racing and Justin Marks have made in the NASCAR Cup series,” Team Principal Brian Makse said. “What Justin and his team were able to achieve in such a short time was astonishing. At the same time, I saw many similarities between what Trackhouse has done and the way we can do things in IMSA. What Trackhouse immediately recognized was that the integration of entertainment with the business of professional sports is essential to their success.”

Thaze Competition is developing an ongoing unscripted series about the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, the goal of which is to introduce new fans to sports car racing in the United States. The series takes a wide-angle view of the championship, looking at the personalities and inner workings of both experienced teams and a freshman outfit like Thaze Competition.

“While our passion for motorsport is at the heart of this project, we have a keen focus on sound business practices and commercial opportunities that will allow the team to be financially sustainable for the long term,” Ahmad said. “This will allow us to expand our offerings with drivers and team members who share in our vision.”

The team is scheduled to take delivery of a new Mercedes-AMG GT4 in mid-December in addition to acquiring a race-proven car that has already been used in North American competition.

“In the short term, we’re already planning beyond IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge and are putting together a ladder for driver development and competition opportunities that run from club racing through to entry-level professional series,” Makse said. “One of the great things about sports car racing today is that drivers can choose from several different championships to suit their level of development and we’ll be here to encourage that.”

  • Zilisch Victory Narrows Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship at Road Atlanta

Zilisch Victory Narrows Mazda MX-5 Cup Championship at Road Atlanta

Just 30 points separate top two with $250,000 on the line

BRASELTON, Ga. (Sept. 29, 2022) – The Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich® Tires title chase narrowed to 30 points on Thursday courtesy of a Connor Zilisch (No. 72 Hixon Motor Sports) victory. Zilisch beat teammate Selin Rollan (No. 87 Hixon Motor Sports) to the checkered flag by 0.123-second. Championship leader Jared Thomas (No. 96 JTR Motorsports Engineering) finished fifth while Gresham Wagner (No. 5 Spark Performance) had a disastrous race and only completed five laps before a mechanical issue ended his race.

Zilisch started the 45-minute race from outside the front row, but immediately took over the top spot. He and polesitter Sam Paley (No. 28 McCumbee McAleer Racing) controlled the first part of the race before being joined by Tyler Gonzalez (No. 51 Copeland Motorsports). The trio worked together and pulled away from the rest of the field.

Drama was unfolding behind them. Wagner, the defending champion and closest rival to Thomas, came into pitlane after five laps with a broken steering rack and his race was done.

Thomas, meanwhile, was struggling without power steering and hovering at the back half of the top 10. Wagner was no longer a threat to the championship, but the farther behind Thomas was to Zilisch, the smaller Thomas’ lead would be going into the final race on Friday.

A late full-course yellow to get a stranded car out of the Turn 10 gravel erased the lead the front-runners had built and gave Thomas one more chance to maximize his points.

The race resumed with 10 minutes left on the clock for a three-lap dash to the checkered flag. Zilisch grabbed the lead from Paley who fell to fourth, which gave Rollan the opportunity to move into second. Rollan became Zilisch’s wingman and pushed him away from third-place Gonzalez and eventually across the finish line.

“I come to the track to win and that’s what I did,” Zilisch said. “I have to thank Selin [Rollan] though. He helped me out more than I expected and more than he needed to. Thanks to the whole Hixon Motorsports team, it’s a championship fight now and I’m just looking forward to tomorrow and see what I’m going to be able to do. I’m just going to go out there with the same goal of winning the race and whatever else happens, happens.

“The yellow was good because it got Selin back in the race,” he added. “I was a little skeptical about it because it brought everyone else back into the race, but we managed it well and were able to come out with a 1-2 finish for the team. I’m just looking forward to Race 2 tomorrow.”

The race win earned Zilisch 350 points, plus 10 points for leading the most laps and 10 points for starting Friday’s race from pole. This brings his total to 3350 points, moving him to second in the championship, only 30 points behind Thomas.

Rollan, who is not in championship contention, was happy to help his teammate and return to the podium for the first time since Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in May.

“I’m really, really happy with that run today,” Rollan said. “I’ve had a bad few races since Watkins Glen. It is great to be on the pointy end most of the weekend. And for sure, super happy for Connor and to give the team a 1-2 finish! Thanks to Hixon Motor Sports and thanks to Austin Hatcher for making all this possible. I’m happy to be back on the podium. It’s been a while!”

Gonzalez, who is also not in championship contention, was hoping to add a race win to his record, but with the teammates ahead of him working together, it wasn’t to be.

“We were all working really well together and just pushing away trying to make it a three-car race,” Gonzalez said. “Then that yellow came out and it kind of messed up our plans. At that point it was a mad dash to the end and ended up being the two Hixon cars versus one Copeland car.

“Third place still feels good,” Gonzalez continued. “Hopefully next year we can go for the whole championship. It was unfortunate that I had some conflicts this year. Overall, the Copeland boys gave me a great car and I couldn’t be happier.”

Paley ended up fourth, followed by Thomas in fifth.

The race’s Hard Charger Award went to a newcomer to MX-5 Cup; Cameron Lawrence (No. 88 JTR Motorsports Engineering) picked up seven positions during the race to earn $1,000 as well as an additional $1,000 for his JTR Motorsports Engineering Crew Chief.

Zilisch has locked up the Rookie of the Year championship but will need to overcome a 30-point deficit to Thomas to take home the title.

Friday’s MX-5 Cup season finale goes green at 9:50am ET with live coverage on RACER.com and IMSA.com/tvlive.

About: The Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich® Tires is the signature spec series for Mazda Motorsports. As he has at three previous WeatherTech Championship events, Kurtz will team with Jon Bennett and Colin Braun – Kurtz’s teammate in SRO Motorsports America competition. The trio share the No. 54 CrowdStrike/Motul/FLEX-BOX Ligier JS P320 in the Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3) category.

It concludes Kurtz’s 2022 program with CORE autosport as part of the Michelin Endurance Cup, the four endurance rounds on the WeatherTech Championship’s schedule: the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen and Petit Le Mans.

    Davide Rigon (ITA)
    Daniel Serra (BRA)
    James Calado (GBR)

(Braselton, Georgia, September 29, 2022) … Risi Competizione is returning to the race and circuit that helped kick off the team’s early success, Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. The new in 1998 team won the first ever Petit Le Mans race that year with drivers Wayne Taylor, Eric van der Poele and Emmanuel Collard in the Doyle-Risi Ferrari 333.

Giuseppe Risi is still at the helm of the fan favorite Ferrari team based in Houston, Texas. His drivers for the 25th annual Motul Petit Le Mans IMSA WeatherTech Championship Series race, September 29-October 1, are Ferrari factory Competizioni GT drivers James Calado, Davide Rigon, and Daniel Serra.

In addition to the 1998 victory at Petit, the Risi Competizione team most recently won in class at the 2.54-mile, 12-turn Road Atlanta circuit in 2019 with drivers Calado, Serra and Alessandro Pier Guidi in the teams’ last outing here. Risi has three additional Petit victories — in 2016, 2009 and 2008.

In 2016 Giancarlo Fisichella, James Calado and Toni Vilander took the Risi Ferrari 488 GTLM to victory. In 2008 Jamie Melo and Mika Salo won from pole position in the Ferrari 430 GT2 and again in 2009 with Melo, Salo and Pierre Kaffer, also in the 430 GT2 at the 10-hour enduro.

The Maranello, Italy based Ferrari marque recently claimed its 500th victory with the Ferrari 488 GT3 in international racing across the globe, earning the model (both standard configuration and Evo 2020 versions) a prominent place in history as the most successful Ferrari ever.

Risi Competizione is one of seven GTD Pro entries in a field of 43 total entries for this year’s Petit Le Mans. There are two additional Ferrari 488 GTs entered, both in the GTD class.

    QUOTES

Rick Mayer, Risi Competizione Race Engineer:
“Petit Le Mans is always a great race and one where the Risi team has had a number of successes, including the inaugural race 25 years ago. What a great story it would make if we could repeat that success this year. Our last race at Petit for the Risi team was in 2019 and we won so let’s hope history keeps repeating itself.”

Davide Rigon, driver, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo:
“It’s good to be back with Risi. It will be my first experience at Petit Le Mans in Atlanta. I’m excited to have my teammates teach me as much as possible. I’m looking forward to being there. I have heard that it’s a very beautiful place and a nice race. Looking forward to it and to be with Mr. Risi and all the people at Risi Competizione. We will do our best. “

James Calado, driver, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo:
“This will be my third Petit Le Mans [and third with Risi Competizione]. Hopefully, I can make it three out of three [wins] because it would be an unbelievable achievement. It’s obviously different this year being GT3 and not GTE so lap times and things like that will be a little bit different. I think the team have good knowledge of this track, good success and we have good teammates, so hopefully we can get the third win. I’m looking forward to being back. It’s nice to return to the team since Daytona was my last race with Risi. It’s always great to be back racing in America and I’ll give it my best shot.”

Daniel Serra, driver, No. 62 Ferrari 488 GT3 Evo:
“I’m very happy to be back at Petit Le Mans. The last time we were there with Risi was in 2019 and we won the race. Road Atlanta is one of my favorite tracks so I’m really happy and excited to be back. We are fighting for the IMSA Endurance Championship so let’s see what we can do this weekend. It’s always nice to share the car with Davide and James and we are ready.”

BRASELTON, Georgia (September 28, 2022) – Hardpoint will wrap the IMSA season this week at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, where Nick Boulle returns to the team to join Rob Ferriol and Katherine Legge in Saturday’s 10-hour Motul Petit Le Mans endurance classic in the No. 99 GridRival/de Boulle Diamond and Jewelry Porsche 911 GT3 R, and Nick Galante and Sean McAlister will cap the season in the No. 22 Racing to End Alzheimer’s Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge finale.

Friday’s two-hour Michelin Pilot Challenge race can be seen live streaming on Peacock at 1:10 p.m. ET on September 30, and tape delayed on USA Network at Noon ET on Monday, October 10. Petit Le Mans, the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship finale, can be seen in its entirety for 10 hours beginning at noon ET on Saturday, October 1 on Peacock. The opening three hours can be seen on the NBC Network, with the closing three hours, 30 minutes on USA Network beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

    Hardpoint News and Notes

Nick Boulle returns to Hardpoint to bookend the season after opening as the team’s fourth driver at the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Boulle qualified the car at Daytona and helped the team to a top-10 finish at the endurance race.

Boulle’s last appearance at Petit Le Mans was in 2018, when he drove an LMP2 car for Performance Tech Motorsports. That day ended early for Boulle’s team, but not before he was able to make up ground for his team in a successful stint.

Legge’s most recent podium at Petit Le Mans came in the same 2018 race, where she finished second in the GTD class.

Likewise, Ferriol owns trophies from Road Atlanta. He was on the podium in 2019 In IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup North America’s Gold Class, and Hardpoint clinched the 2021 Porsche Carrera Cup North America Am Class championship at the track in 2021. He just missed the podium in 2019 in Michelin Pilot Challenge, finishing fourth.

Ferriol, Legge and teammate Andrew Davis finished eighth of 15 entries in the GTD class at Petit Le Mans last season.

Ferriol and Legge participated in the track’s pre-event fan party on Tuesday night in the Suwanee Town Center. Both drivers participated in a fan forum, media interviews and an autograph session during the promotional party.

The Road Atlanta race is the final IMSA race for this model of Porsche 911 GT3 R, with a new version of the car on the way for the 2023 season.

Boulle rejoins the team for Petit Le Mans, filling the role held by Cusick Motorsports driver Stefan Wilson at Sebring and Watkins Glen. Cusick Motorsports and Wilson have redirected their focus toward IndyCar opportunities for the 2023 season after introducing LOHLA SPORT, Gnarly Jerky and Neptune Systems to the IMSA paddock during the 2022 seasons.

Galante and McAlister will represent Racing to End Alzheimer’s on the No. 22 Porsche Cayman for the final time this season in Pilot Challenge GS class.

The “purple Porsche” will carry nearly 200 names in tribute to loved ones around the country who have been touched by Alzheimer’s. The Racing to End Alzheimer’s team, led by founder Philip Frengs, have made recent stops at Porsche dealerships in Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee, on the way to Atlanta with a tribute car – a street version of the Porsche Cayman, complete with livery. Dealerships across the country have hosted Frengs, who has spoken with donors and race fans about the charity.

The program has raised nearly $100,000 to date this season through donations that go to Alzheimer’s care and cure programs. All of the donations go directly to the selected causes, with Frengs’ company, Legistics, covering the program overhead and the racing expenses.

If anyone knows the podium location at Road Atlanta, it’s Nick Galante. He was the ST class race winner in 2016, on the ST podium in 2018, and on the TCR class podium in 2019.

His teammate can almost match that success. In five Porsche GT3 Cup races at Road Atlanta during the COVID season of 2020, McAlister earned three podium finishes and finished fourth two additional times.

Hardpoint has been busy away from the IMSA paddock, as well. Brady Behrman scored a pair of Intercontinental GT podiums at Watkins Glen in September, driving his No. 428 TradeCentric Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

Hardpoint’s eSports team captured the team championship in the Porsche Club of America Pro GT3 Cup series on the iRacing platform. Cameron Martineau and Chris Walsh combined to take home the team title on their rigs, including Asetek Sim Racing pedals, with Martineau second and Walsh fourth in the driver standings.

    Hardpoint Quote Board

Rob Ferriol, Driver, No. 99 Porsche 911 GT3 R: “This is the last race of a challenging season, but the one thing that’s apparent is the effort our crew has put into this program. We’ve taken another step forward with a productive test session at Road Atlanta, so we plan to send the season and this model of the GT3 R out on a high note. Nick got back to speed at the test after being away from this car since Daytona, and we’re happy to have him back in our paddock space and a part of the team. Petit Le Mans is always a challenge because it’s busy, it’s long, and there’s historically been a lot of attrition. If we can take care of our business and continue to improve the car throughout the week, we’ll give Katherine an opportunity to bring home a finish for us at the end and launch that momentum into what is shaping up to be a busy 2023 season.”

Nick Boulle, Driver, No. 99 Porsche 911 GT3 R: “I’m really excited to get back behind the wheel of the No. 99 Hardpoint Porsche 911 GT3 R at Road Atlanta to bookend the season! We tested last week here and that helped me to get reacquainted with the Porsche. I’m hoping we can continue that momentum and make a good run at Petit Le Mans next week. I have to give a big thanks to de Boulle Motorsports and the Hardpoint team for a second opportunity in the car to finish the season. Hopefully we can surprise some people this weekend with our performance on what is always a long and exciting race.”

Katherine Legge, Driver, No. 99 Porsche 911 GT3 R: “Road Atlanta is not only my home race, but also one of my favorites! It is so much fun to drive and the 10-hour race adds all the excitement you need for the fans and drivers alike. The conditions are constantly changing and it’s tricky to cool exist with other classes of cars with all the elevation and unsighted turns. It’s great to have Nick back driving with us. We had a great test here last week and we are all buoyed and pumped to get in and give it out all for the last race of the season.”

Sean McAlister, Driver, No. 22 Porsche Cayman: “I really love Road Atlanta. It’s arguably my favorite on the schedule. 2020 was a good year here, I had a couple of podiums and I just missed the pole in qualifying by a few hundredths. I can’t wait to get on track and figure out the Cayman here. Let’s just hope the incoming hurricane doesn’t cancel anything on the schedule, but if it does hit and we’re on track in the rain it should make for some fun, wet driving!”

Nick Galante, Driver, No. 22 Porsche Cayman: “Road America has been kind to me over the years, so this feels like a great time to start a new podium streak. We’re really motivated to get a result with all of these inspiring names on the car, and Phil and the Racing to End Alzheimer’s team have done a fantastic job the last two weeks to make a push for donations, stopping at dealerships across the south to meet with donors. We appreciate the effort the fans and public have made, and I know this team will match that effort this week on the track.”

EVENT PREVIEW: Wright Motorsports Makes Final Championship Bid at Petit Le Mans

BRASELTON, Ga., (September 27, 2022) – After beginning the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with a victory at the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Wright Motorsports heads to the season finale at Petit Le Mans for a final bid at the GTD class title. The No. 16 1st Phorm Porsche, with drivers Ryan Hardwick, Jan Heylen, and Zacharie Robichon, will compete in the 10-hour endurance event will all eyes focused on adding another championship title to the team’s remarkable history.

“Once again, we’re entering Petit Le Mans in contention for the championship,” said Team Owner John Wright. “We’ve come very close these last couple of years, and that’s a huge testament to the drivers and crew we have here at Wright Motorsports. We’ve been working hard for this one and are ready to get started. We have some strong competition, but a lot can happen in ten hours. We’ll focus on what we can control and see how it all plays out.”

As the endurance addition, Zacharie Robichon returns to the No. 16 Porsche 911 GT3 R for the final race, after previously running with the team in this year’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, Twelve Hours of Sebring, and the Six Hours of the Glen. The Canadian driver closed out the 2021 season with the GTD class title and will be a strong asset to the team as they make their final push for the championship.

Following the team’s win at Daytona International Speedway, the blue and white Porsche returned to victory circle once again at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The group’s additional top-five finishes at the Long Beach Grand Prix and VIRginia International Raceway have kept the team in the championship hunt, despite a character-building season.

With 385 points remaining to be assigned, 57 points separate the No. 16 Porsche effort from the points leaders in both the team and driver standings. While the maximum of 35 points awarded during qualifying may not seem like a large pull, every point will be vital in the final hours of Saturday’s race. The group at Wright Motorsports is all too familiar with entering a season finale as contenders in the championship fight. Last season, the team clinched the Michelin Pilot Challenge and IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup during the Petit Le Mans weekend, and in 2020, drivers Ryan Hardwick and Patrick Long finished just two points shy of the IMSA WeatherTech GTD title after a commanding season. Four GTD entries remain in contention, and the No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche sits third in both the team and driver standings. The Ohio-based operation will not only need to execute flawlessly on track and in pit lane as usual, but also finish ahead of the Heart of Racing team and Team Korthoff Motorsports with sufficient room to have a points advantage.

Pending no interruptions from Hurricane Ian, the first practice will begin on Thursday morning, September 29. The 28-car, five-class field will have two more practice sessions that day before qualifying on Friday afternoon. The 25th Annual Motul Petit Le Mans will begin at 12:10 PM ET on Saturday, October 1, and the first three hours will air live on NBC. The entire race can be streamed flag-to-flag on Peacock.

    DRIVER QUOTES

    Ryan Hardwick

It all comes down to this! As a competitor, these are the situations that you dream about. Our team has a chance to win one of the most prestigious championships in the sports car racing world, at the final race of the season, which is also my hometown race, the Petit Le Mans. Our team was in a similar situation last year in the Michelin Pilot Challenge championship where it all came down to the final race, and Jan and I were able to come out on top. We are squarely focused on achieving that same result this season and will give it everything we have to fight for the championship down to the very last lap.

    Jan Heylen

You start every season hoping you’re in a position to go for the championship when you come to the last race, and we’re right there. So, I’m thrilled that we can go to Petit Le Mans knowing there’s a chance to win. It’s one of my favorite events of the year. To go there with a shot at winning is awesome. I’m looking forward to it. The whole team is really excited and it’s going to be a tough and exciting race. I can’t wait to get started.

    Zacharie Robichon

Road Atlanta is one of my favorite tracks and to have the chance to jump back into the car with Wright Motorsports and push to help Ryan and Jan in their bid for the overall championship is one I am truly looking forward to.

They have had a number of solid races and we know that we have everything in place to continue the results. Petit is often times one of the most hardcore endurance races due to the short track and the “winner take all” aspect of being the end of the season. This makes for some of the best racing as a driver and we will be ready for it

Porsche Carrera Cup North America Presented by the Cayman Islands

The trio of Wright Motorsports-prepared Porsche 911 GT3 Cup race cars conclude their season in the Porsche Carrera Cup North America Presented by the Cayman Islands this weekend, and John Goetz enters the event second in the championship fight. With 16 points separating Goetz from points leader Mark Kvamme, the distribution of the 50 available points this weekend will decide this year’s winners. Following a strong performance at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last month, Atlanta local Varun Choksey will race the No. 13 Porsche on his home turf, looking to add a successful finish to these two top-five results earned so far this season. After missing the Porsche Sports Car Together Fest at Indianapolis, Hutton McKenna and the No. 88 Porsche return to finish out the season, aiming to close the year out on a high note.

  • Irish Mike’s Racing to close learning campaign at Road Atlanta

Irish Mike’s Racing to close learning campaign at Road Atlanta

BRASELTON, GA (26 Sept. 2022) – Spending the 2022 IMSA Porsche Carrera Cup North America presented by Visit Cayman Islands season coming to grips with a brand-new car, Irish Mike’s Racing is set to close the campaign with a doubleheader weekend at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

Craig Conway drives the No. 97 Diamond Suzuki Porsche 992 in the Pro-Am class, while Conor Flynn pilots the No. 95 FlynnCo Cars/ Chillout Systems Porsche 992. The series races in a pair of 40-minute races during the Motul Petit Le Mans weekend, at 5 p.m. on Thursday and 10:55 a.m. on Friday (all times ET).

Moving to the new Porsche 992 platform for the 2022 season, Irish Mikes Racing has shown continued progress, learning about the new Porsche while bettering their finishes at each two-race weekend.

“We excited to see 2022 coming to an end, and we’re real excited looking to 2023,” Flynn said. “It’s always nice to close it out at Road Atlanta – one of my favorite tracks in the country. It always makes for a happy ending to the season, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Conway is coming off a pair of 10th-place finishes in the Pro-Am class in the Porsche Together weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, while Flynn placed 15th and 12th in the lead Porsche Pro category.

“I’ve been to Road Atlanta a lot, and I really like it,” Conway said. “I’ve done a few SCCA Run-Offs there back in the Nineties and I’ve done tons of IMSA races. So I don’t have to learn the track, so that’s a good thing heading into the weekend.”

Learning the Porsche 992 after campaigning the 991 has been a major transition, even tougher than the team anticipated.

“I’m preparing to figure out the 922 there, opposed to the older car,” Conway said. “Hopefully, we can keep doing what we’ve been doing the last few races, and keep getting faster and moving up the order. Moving from the 991 to the 992 has been very difficult. The newer car is harder to learn, finding how to get to the limit of the car. It’s been a very difficult transition, not only for the drivers, but the crew and everyone on the team. I can’t tell you why, but we’ve struggled. We were doing well with the 991, and now we’ve found ourselves near the back of the pack. We’ve been working on it as a team, learning all the new setup stuff, and finding out all that works on the new car. For the drivers, we’ve been learning where we can go and how far we can push it.”

Conway ended the 2021 campaign with back-to-back third-place finishes at Indianapolis and Road Atlanta.

Flynn also visited the podium last year at Road Atlanta, placing third in the opening race of the weekend.

“We’ve been learning a lot in terms of setup and development on our new 992s, which are totally different from what we’ve raced in the past,” Flynn said. “It’s been a hard learning curve for both drivers and crew, getting used to what works on the new car and what adjustments to make, because it behaves a lot differently from the 991. Each weekend has been like learning from scratch.”

The season finale opens with a pair of practices on Wednesday, at 9:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Qualifying begins at 9 a.m. on Thursday.
