Korthoff Motorsports and Driver Stevan McAleer Build IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar GTD Championship Lead with Fourth-Place Finish

Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Entrant Team Korthoff Motorsports and Driver Stevan McAleer Build IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar GTD Championship Lead with Fourth-Place Finish in FCP Euro Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park

LAKEVILLE, Connecticut – Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing entrant Team Korthoff Motorsports extended its IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Daytona (GTD) class points lead Saturday at Lime Rock Park with a hard-fought fourth-place finish in the FCP Euro Northeast Grand Prix with co-drivers Stevan McAleer and Mike Skeen in the No. 32 Team Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3. The finish, Team Korthoff’s best result in IMSA GTD competition since a third-place showing at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March, was two positions higher than the No. 32 team’s nearest challenger in Saturday’s two-hour and 40-minute race on the 1.474-mile Lime Rock road course. Coming into the race five points ahead in the championship race, the No. 32 team and McAleer unofficially leave Lime Rock 40 points clear of the closest competitor.

Korthoff was the highest finishing Mercedes-AMG GT3 on Saturday for the fifth time in the seven WeatherTech Championship races this season, but joined two other Mercedes-AMG Motorsport customer teams in leaving Lime Rock feeling better results were just out of reach.

The No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3, co-driven by Philip Ellis and Russell Ward, took the white flag leading in GTD only to see Ellis slow with a mechanical issue with the finish line in sight.

Skeen was running in third in the No. 32 as Ellis fell off the pace and joined the rest of the lead pack competitors in darting around the stricken No. 57. Unfortunately, Skeen fell to fourth in the frenzy and came up just short of securing Korthoff’s first podium finish in more than four months.

The No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Proton USA Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Cooper MacNeil and Jules Gounon also hit trouble late after a competitive run in the team’s first GTD class race this season. Gounon was looking to seal a likely top five or better result but instead settled for seventh after being assessed a drive-through penalty after what race officials determined was avoidable contact with another competitor.

The two-hour Pilot Challenge race earlier on Saturday was as demanding as the featured WeatherTech Championship FCP Euro Northeast Grand Prix, but one entry from Murillo Racing stepped up for the Bronze Cup class victory.

Brent Mosing and Tim Probert co-drove the No. 65 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 to the Bronze Cup win for the second time this season after winning at Mid-Ohio for the first time in May. The victory gave the Mercedes-AMG GT4 a perfect seven-for-seven win record this season in the new Bronze Cup class which is designed to allow sportsman or “am” drivers battle each other in a separate championship while still competing in the overall GS race.

The top Mercedes-AMG GT4 finisher in the Pilot Challenge race was the No. 55 FCP Euro by Ricca Autosport Mercedes-AMG GT3 co-driven by Skeen and Trevor Andrusko. Competing in the lead pack throughout the two-hour race, closing driver Skeen jumped to fourth from fifth on the final lap for the FCP Euro team’s best finish in just its third race in a select schedule of events this season.

Murillo’s sister No. 56 and No. 72 Mercedes-AMG GT4 entries provisionally hold second and third, respectively, in the overall GS championship standings after Lime Rock despite a pair of challenging races.

The No. 56 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 of Eric Foss and Kenton Koch failed to finish a race for the first time this season after a rock punctured a hole in the car’s oil cooler halfway into the race.

Kenny Murillo and Christian Szymczak finished eighth in the No. 72 Mercedes-AMG GT4 after finishing on the podium in the last two races with a third place at Watkins Glen in June and second to their No. 56 teammates earlier this month at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Next up for Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing teams in IMSA WeatherTech Championship and IMSA Pilot Challenge competition is the IMSA Fastlane SportsCar Weekend at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, August 4 – 7.

Stevan McAleer, Driver – No. 32 Team Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3: “You have to take the positives. We gained some points in the championship, our Mercedes-AMG GT3 was pretty decent, and Mike is obviously fantastic. He was really strong at the end there but unfortunately the No. 57 car broke on the last lap and Mike had no choice but to go around the outside and another car further back had the advantage of going to the inside. If I would have been told earlier today we would have finished fourth, I would have been quite happy with it, but the podium was so close. We are still fighting for this championship.”

Mike Skeen, Driver – No. 32 Team Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 and No. 55 FCP Euro by Ricca Autosport Mercedes-AMG GT4: “Two P4 finishes on the day. Those are solid results. A disappointment in some ways to be so close to the podium twice and not get there, but I am thrilled with the Korthoff guys. They had excellent strategy, excellent pit stops, and we had great pace. A great points day, really solid performance with the team, but we are just dying to get back to the podium.”

Cooper MacNeil, Driver – No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Proton USA Mercedes-AMG GT3: “Tough race, going almost all green. I was able to make up some positions during my stint. It wasn’t without incident. When I was pitting, I got hit from behind and got crossed up, but made it to pit lane safely. Jules put in some fast laps and the car was good in clean air. Unfortunately, he got caught up with another car and we got put back to seventh. I hope we can carry the positives of today over to Road America, our home race, in three weeks.”

Jules Gounon, Driver – No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Proton USA Mercedes-AMG GT3: “I was on the radio with the team, and we agreed on a ‘full send’ to go for a podium finish at the end. I launched an attack on another car who moved a little under braking and I got into him. I thought it was a racing incident. We had a lot of fun today. We were quick, but luck wasn’t on our side. I was happy to be back with Cooper, he drove a great stint. I hope to go for a podium when I return with the team at VIR.”

Brent Mosing, Driver – No. 65 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4: “This is a really big win for me because I have not had good luck at Lime Rock in the past. This changed all that, Lime Rock was good to me this time. I kept the car clean, turned it over to Tim, and he drove the lights out of it again for the second race in a row. I am going to put this thing on Tim’s back! All I have to do is hand him over a clean car.”

Tim Probert, Driver – No. 65 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4: “With two wins behind us now, we are certainly pushing for more victories in the year’s last three races. The team really gave us a wonderful car today. The pit stops were flawless. We had a really good run until a restart. We picked up some rubber build up on the tires and that created a bit of an issue with a few cars getting by, but we were delighted to pick up the Bronze Cup win.”

Trevor Andrusko, Driver – No. 55 FCP Euro by Ricca Autosport Mercedes-AMG GT4: “The Mercedes-AMG GT4 is awesome, super comfortable, super drivable and awesome to race. I think we are starting to prove that we are meant to be here. Sebring was our first race together and a bit of shakedown for us, but we are starting to make a little more progress, do some testing and get a little more familiar with the Mercedes-AMG GT4. Today was absolutely insane. This weekend has been really tight on the schedule and on the track. Tight quarters, but we came with some notes from testing and had a quick car at the end, and that’s really what we showed up with. I am very comfortable in GT4 cars. Doing a couple of years of Super Trofeo has really helped me progress a little bit.”

Kenny Murillo, Driver – No. 72 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4: “Road America can’t come soon enough. Lime Rock started off OK, but we had some bad luck with a cut tire in qualifying that put us in a tough situation with the race strategy as it was never apparent on which way to go with it. The last yellow flag didn’t fall for us, but we just kept our heads down and tried to do the best we could on track. The car came out pretty clean in the end, so you have to be happy with that, and we couldn’t be happier with the Mercedes-AMG GT4 and the Michelin tires. Lime Rock is a bullring, we came out with the car intact, and we are really looking forward to Road America.”

CORVETTE RACING AT LIME ROCK: Short-Track Woes for No. 3 C8.R

Contact near halfway point stymies Corvette charge to GTD PRO podium

LAKEVILLE, Conn. (July 16, 2022) – Short-track racing bit Corvette Racing on Saturday as mid-race contact sidelined the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R in the NorthEast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park.

Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor finished fourth in GTD PRO but 13th overall. Things were trending in a positive direction for the C8.R until side-to-side contact with another GTD car damaged the right-rear suspension of the Corvette, necessitating a long pit stop to repair the C8.R. In the end, Garcia and Taylor finished five laps down to the race-winning No. 9 Porsche.

Taylor began fourth on the grid, and Corvette Racing engineers immediately went to a three-stop strategy to manage tire degradation and tire performance. The No. 3 Corvette stopped just shy of the 30-minute mark and again just short of halfway with a change at that point to Garcia.

The goal was to get Garcia to around 40 minutes to go before making the car’s last stop. Unfortunately, the Corvette was involved in side-to-side contact with a Mercedes only a few laps into Garcia’s first stint. The incident bent a component of the Corvette’s rear suspension, which took the car out of contention.

The rest of the race during into a test session for the remaining races on the IMSA schedule. Corvette Racing returns to the track at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc., from August 5-7.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – FINISHED FOURTH IN GTD PRO:“It didn’t make any sense, what happened there. I don’t know… when you are on mixed strategy with everyone and everyone is defending from you, it didn’t make any sense there. Could I have been more patient? Maybe, but I wasn’t here to finish second again or third. It was time to go. That’s the way it is, especially because I think we had a strong car over the long run. Everyone was defending like it was the last 10 minutes. Even if I didn’t want to race them, that’s how it went. Now I wish I was a little more patient, but I’m here to win and at that point in time, we had to go.”

JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – FINISHED FOURTH IN GTD PRO:“That was a frustrating one. The tough thing is that we’re in one race with different classes but the same cars. Guys on different strategies are racing you even though you aren’t part of their race. That part is frustrating. We got caught up in a bit of a mess there. We were in there with a shot for second. The 9 car was pretty much untouchable today. That’s been the story of the season so far. Hopefully we can go to Road America and fight them a little bit harder.”

The No. 22 Racing To End Alzheimer’s Porsche Cayman Will Take on Road Racing’s Short Track During This Weekend’s IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Race

LAKEVILLE, Connecticut (July 14, 2022) – Hardpoint’s IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge program is on the road once again, this time for round seven of the 10-race championship at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut. Nick Galante and Sean McAlister return to co-drive the No. 22 Racing To End Alzheimer’s Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport in the two-hour race.

The race is scheduled for Saturday, July 16 at 11:05 a.m. EDT and can be seen live on Peacock, NBC’s streaming service. It will be re-aired on USA network on Saturday, July 23 at 12:30 p.m. EDT.

Hardpoint At Lime Rock Pre-Race News and Notes

    • Lime Rock is the shortest track on the IMSA calendar at 1.5 miles, with a lap time of around 54 seconds and an average speed of nearly 100 miles per hour. That quick lap places pace at a premium to stay on the lead lap of the race and in contention.
    • Galante has a history at the track, including a pole position and a runner-up finish in what was then the ST class in 2018. He also has a pair of fourth-place finishes, just off the podium at Lime Rock.
    • Galante is a native New Englander, hailing from Greenfield, Massachusetts. A number of friends and family are on the guest list for the race on the calendar closest to his boyhood home.
    • This is McAlister’s first visit to Lime Rock Park. That marks back-to-back races at new tracks for McAlister in his rookie season in Michelin Pilot Challenge.
    • Because of the lap time and the unpredictable nature of full course caution periods, pit stop speed is at a premium at Lime Rock. Hardpoint’s advantage in that arena comes in the form of tire changers Jason Jannetti and Cody Forbes, who have worked to improve throughout the season and are now amond the quickest five-lug tire changers in the championship based on time.
    • Hardpoint’s No. 22 Porsche Cayman enters the weekend 20th in the team standings, despite missing the opening round at Daytona while the program was coming together.
    • The Racing To End Alzheimer’s program is well on its way to its goal of 222 names of loved ones who are or have suffered from Alzheimer’s on the livery, with more than 115 names on the car at Lime Rock. Each name and hometown represents a $250 donation, matched by Legistics, Inc., that helps to fund the care and the cure for Alzheimer’s disease.
    • Hardpoint will make its SRO Americas debut next weekend at Watkins Glen International, utilizing the team’s existing crew members and experience with the Porsche 911 GT3 R to provide pre-event and trackside support for a new teammate in the GT America and GT World Challenge races. This is another milestone moment for Hardpoint in 2022, following the recent addition of Brady Behrman’s International GT program.
    • Earlier this week, Hardpoint announced a partnership with Denmark-based Asetek, a sim racing gear innovator, with Asetek SimSports racing products used in the Hardpoint shop and with the Hardpoint eSports team.

    Hardpoint Quote Board

Nick Galante, Driver, No. 22 Porsche Cayman: “Lime Rock is fast, the laps are short, and there’s never a break. That makes it a lot of fun and at the same time very difficult. It was good to me the last time I was here in 2018. I won the pole, and my teammate and I finished second in the race. We’ll have our hands full this week but the Hardpoint guys will be ready to go if we need a green flag pit stop, which could really be the difference in this race. As always, I’m proud to represent Racing To End Alzheimer’s at the track closest to my hometown, and we hope we can add some more names to the Porsche this weekend on our way to a strong finish.”

Sean McAlister, Driver, No. 22 Porsche Cayman: “I’ve never been to Lime Rock so this will be the second new track in a row for this year. But I do know that it is our shortest lap on the schedule so being on pace and having good pit stops is very important, or it’s easy to go a lap down. This weekend I’m looking forward to flipping a new chapter to this season. It obviously hasn’t been the greatest season results-wise so I’m hoping that I can get better acquainted with the car and provide the team with a much-deserved result. Thanks again to the Hardpoint guys working their butts off to get the car repaired so that we could get back out on track this weekend at Lime Rock.”

Garcia, Taylor looking for back-to-back wins at sports car racing’s bullring

DETROIT (July 12, 2022) – After racing at the wide-open spaces of places like Daytona and Le Mans, Corvette Racing this weekend travels to sports car racing’s version of a bullring: Lime Rock Park for Saturday’s Northeast Grand Prix.

Saturday’s two-hour, 40-minute race is one of two GT-only events for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor, teammates in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R, are the defending winners from a year ago and aim to replicate that success in the GT Daytona (GTD) PRO category around the 1.474-mile, seven-turn road course in northwestern Connecticut.

Close-quarters racing is usually the name of the game at Lime Rock. It’s a circuit that features one left-hand turn and laps of around 50 seconds. Heat and humidity also typically play a role, and higher track temperatures place a higher importance on tire management for all GTD cars.

That’s been the biggest adjustment for the Corvette Racing team in 2022. In GTD PRO – and the regular GTD class as well – all cars must use the same Michelin customer tire instead of tires specifically designed for each racecar… as was the case in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) categories in recent years.

That tire management is what helped Garcia and Taylor finish as runners-up two weeks ago at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and move back into second place in the GTD PRO Drivers, Manufacturers and Team championships.

Corvette Racing’s history at Lime Rock dates back to 2004 with the fifth-generation racing Corvette, and the C8.R is the fourth different version of Corvette Racing entry to compete at the venue. The team has six previous victories to its credit to lead all IMSA entrants, and Chevrolet ranks second among manufacturers with 13 race victories.

The FCP Euro Grand Prix from Lime Rock Park is scheduled for 3:10 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 16. The race will stream live on Peacock and air same-day at 5 p.m. ET on USA. IMSA Radio will broadcast all on-track sessions beginning with Friday afternoon’s practice at IMSA.com. The race call Saturday also will be available on XM 207 and SiriusXM Online 992.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “Lime Rock always gives us a unique challenge, especially in this part of the schedule. It’s always a big difference between there and places like Le Mans and Watkins Glen. This year will be a tough fight with six cars in our class going for an overall win. We’ve had to fight for every position in the last two races to get back to second in the championship. We need to start winning races to make gains in the points. That will be everyone’s goal this weekend.”

JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “After our strong run at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, I’m excited to get back to fighting at the front at Lime Rock. We had a great weekend there last year with the pole and win, so hopefully we can replicate that this year. Lime Rock is always tough on tires and tire degradation, and that seemed to be our strength at CTMP. Hopefully that will work to our favor this weekend.”

Cadillac Racing completes initial test of LMDh race car

First days of on-track development a preview of aggressive schedule to prepare for 2023

DETROIT (July 8, 2022) – Cadillac Racing completed its eagerly-awaited maiden on-track laps of the LMDh race car.

In 2023, Cadillac will contest the top category of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the FIA World Endurance Championship, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as the only U.S.-based manufacturer. The IMSA season begins January 28-29 with the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

“It’s exciting to see the hard work and ingenuity of the whole team pay off,” said Kalvin Parker, Cadillac Racing assistant program manager. “The 2023 season promises to be one of the most competitive ever, so we’re looking forward to developing the race car with further testing on-track, driver feedback and in the wind tunnel.”

Development of the race car will continue through the year, with IMSA-sanctioned tests scheduled for October 3-5 at Michelin Raceway Atlanta and December 6-7 at Daytona International Speedway.

“The first laps are the start of an aggressive testing schedule ahead of next year,” GM sports car racing program manager Laura Wontrop Klauser said. “Our team is dedicated to continuing Cadillac Racing’s rich heritage of winning on the track.”

An all-new Cadillac 5.5-liter DOHC V-8 engine developed by GM’s Performance and Racing propulsion team based in Pontiac, Michigan, is paired to the LMDh common hybrid system.

“It was an exhilarating feeling to jump in the car for the first time and get a sense of what the future will look like.” – Earl Bamber

Together with the new spec energy recovery system — combining Bosch’s motor generator unit, battery from Williams Advanced Engineering and gearbox by Xtrac — the 680-horsepower race car will serve as Cadillac’s first hybrid prototype.

Cadillac Racing driver Earl Bamber was impressed with attributes of the race car as he had the privilege to be the first to get behind the wheel to shake down the race car.

“This was a monumental event thanks to a complete group effort between Cadillac, Chip Ganassi Racing and Dallara,” said Bamber, co-driver with Alex Lynn of the No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R this season in IMSA competition. “It was an exhilarating feeling to jump in the car for the first time and get a sense of what the future will look like. So much work has gone into the 2023 race car, and I can’t wait to see it take flight next season.”

Codeveloped by Cadillac Design, Cadillac Racing and chassis constructor Dallara, the new race car features elements of the brand’s heritage such as vertical lighting and floating blades that preview Cadillac’s future portfolio.

Cadillac’s LMDh program will partner with Chip Ganassi Racing and Action Express Racing for 2023. Additional details will be announced later this year.

Since 2017, Cadillac has been competing at the forefront of American sports car racing in IMSA in the DPi class, where it has recorded 27 victories, three Manufacturer Championships and four Manufacturer Endurance Championships. Cadillac Racing has also won three Team and Driver Championships.

  • Jr III Racing Finishes on WeatherTech Podium at CTMP

Jr III Racing Finishes on WeatherTech Podium at CTMP

Bowmanville, Ontario (4 July 2022) – Jr III (“Junior-Three”) Racing finished third in LMP3 at its Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP) debut at the Chevrolet Grand Prix on Sunday. The result marks the team’s third podium finish of the 2022 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season with four rounds complete.

Starting from the front row in the No. 30 Airbnb Ligier JS P320, Ari Balogh and Garett Grist split the two-hour and 40-minute race which saw the pair manage intense batches of traffic on the high-speed road course.

The podium finish was a fitting reward after a big effort from Jr III racing, which prepared one of its IMSA Prototype Challenge LMP3s for WeatherTech competition following a minor fire during last weekend’s Watkins Glen Six Hour. With just a few days in between events as the team didn’t return to Jr III’s Mooresville, NC facility, the team successfully made the IPC to WeatherTech LMP3 swap.

Balogh took the green flag and set a podium-earning pace in the first segment of the race which included the race’s full course caution. Following the restart, Balogh held strong in third through his 33 lap stint before handing the car off to teammate Grist.

Native Canadian Grist took the No. 30 Ligier from fourth to third with one hour left on the race clock. Managing constant traffic around the 2.459-mile road course with four different race classes in action, Grist crossed the line third, giving Jr III Racing its third podium finish of the 2022 season. In addition to the podium finish, Grist set the fastest lap of the race in LMP3, posting a 1:12.523-second lap.

Although a rock solid finish, Grist had hoped for more opportunities to take advantage of the No. 30 Ligier’s pace to move further up the order.

“The car felt really good,” said Grist. “We had the quickest lap of the race, and I think we’re probably up there on average as well, especially in that first stint. But in my second stint, I was stuck behind the second-place car the whole time. It’s such a fast track, so once you get within a couple of car lengths, you lose all your aerodynamics. It’s probably the toughest place to pass that we go to all year and that showed today. I was five or six-tenths back the entire stint, just sitting there, which was a bit frustrating. But we’ll keep getting better – we’ll get there.”

Billy Glavin III, team owner, felt their day showed promise on how the team continues to carry speed despite the quick-turn around from Watkins Glen to CTMP transitioning an IPC car for WeatherTech competition.

“We got back on the horse and had a good race,” said Glavin. “I think we had a really good race car, just gave up a little too much in the pits on that first stop and that kind of put us on the back foot. We were playing catch up ever since. Then on that last yellow flag, we came in, we tried to jump them in the pits by short filling and it just didn’t work out. So we lost some track position and were not able to catch back up. But it was a great race and a great recovery for the team, it shows that we can do it. We got plenty to work on, but I think for the first time this year we had a car from the start to finish that we could race and push on. That is a good direction for us.”

A crew with years of NASCAR experience worked tirelessly this weekend as the racing team had a jam-packed schedule competing in both IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the IMSA Prototype Challenge series.

The team entered the weekend with Courtney Crone and Ari Balogh pairing in the No. 3 Jr III Racing Ligier JS P320 for the third round of IMSA Prototype Challenge competition.

Starting from fifth, Balogh took on the first stint of the one hour 30-minute event. After completing a 40-minute run, Balogh handed the No. 3 Ligier off to Crone who completed the final 45 minutes of the race.

Making her race debut at CTMP Crone took each lap as a learning experience and improved throughout her stint. Similar to her WeatherTech teammates, once in clean air, Crone was able to settle into a rhythm which saw her bring the Ligier home sixth.

“For my first time here, I felt pretty good,” said Crone. “In practice, the car felt super good, but racing is a whole different animal. In the race, I think that my lack of experience here kind of showed. Overall, once we kind of got out of dirty air from the cars for position on that restart we had a very good individual pace. I just struggled with the car behind the traffic. Personally, I did all I knew what I could do. Hopefully, we get to do a test out at VIR and get more laps at future tracks. Overall, the car was really good especially when we’re in clean air, just kind of struggled with it behind any one, and it wasn’t enough for me to really do anything.”

Jr III Racing will return to IMSA WeatherTech competition at Road America on August 7.

Separate incidents in the marquee Chevrolet Grand Prix end the day early for the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship squad

BOWMANVILLE, Ont. Canada (3 July 2022) – Sean Creech Motorsport (SCM) experienced a wide spectrum of racing highs and lows on Sunday at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park as the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship made its first appearance in front of a Canadian crowd in almost three years.

The SCM team came from behind to take a second-place finish in the IMSA Prototype Challenge race Sunday morning with Lance Willsey and Canadian Parker Thompson, but the marquee Chevrolet Grand Prix saw the team suffer two separate incidents that ended the day early – despite valiant efforts by the crew to get the car back on track after lap one contact that resulted in suspension damage.

Willsey and João Barbosa worked hard through the weekend to find the balance between speed and stability with their No. 33 SCM Exelixis/Focal One/Alta Equipment Ligier JS P320, given the significant bumps the drivers encountered on the 2.459-mile road course, despite a complete repaving in 2020. Willsey took the wheel for the 15-minute session and put the No. 33 in sixth on the starting grid. But going into turn one on lap one, the No. 36 LMP3 was checked up and got sideways, tagging Willsey and sending him into the wall. The No. 33 Ligier returned to the garage and the team completed repairs in a remarkable 15 minutes. Unfortunately, Willsey encountered difficulties in that same turn midway through the race and spun, catching the tires and putting the car out of the race in sixth position.

However, Willsey’s experience in the Prototype Challenge race earlier in the day came to a much happier ending. Putting down smooth and steady early laps in the No. 14 SCM Exelixis/Focal One/Alta Equipment Ligier JS P320, Willsey took advantage of others’ mistakes and made solid passes when the opportunity arose, moving up steadily from his eighth-place starting position before handing the wheel to Red Deer, Alberta’s Parker Thompson.

Unfortunately, as Thompson, 24, put it, “we were quick on track and we were a little (too) quick in the pits,” as the team left pit lane .5 seconds quicker than the mandated 94-second pit stop. Thompson came in for a stop-and-hold in pit lane and returned to the action in sixth position, but at the back of the field and behind lapped cars. On the restart after a yellow, Thompson began an impressive march to the front, picking off cars one by one – except for third and fourth, which he passed in one shot. Thompson took the checkered flag in second, earning redemption for the entire team.

“I had so much confidence in that drive, with all the Canadian flags around the track,” said Thompson. “It’s every Canadian’s dream, to stand on this podium. The team did an awesome job, the car was hooked up so I kept my head down and picked off cars the best I could. The racing gods here at CMTP were on our side, we got a caution, and I was able to really get after it. It was great to get Lance on the podium, he deserved it, he drove a great stint. Proud of the entire team!”

Naturally, it was not a happy scene for Barbosa, Willsey and team principal Sean Creech after the WeatherTech race, all three disappointed in the race’s outcome.

“It’s been a challenging day,” said Barbosa. “The crew did everything they could to get us back out but there was too much damage. The morning was such a positive, we were really looking forward to this afternoon. We will focus forward and look forward to Road America.”

“It was really unfortunate,” said Willsey. “It was a lot of hard work top to bottom to come up with a very competitive car, but first corner, first lap the Andretti car went wide in an accordion effect and he ran me into the wall. It was a pretty big hit, but the team came together and got us back out. I felt as though I hit fluid in turn one later in the race and couldn’t catch it. But I can’t say enough about the dedication of the team and the quality of the car they gave us. I ran my fastest laps of the weekend even with a wounded car, I think we could have put up a good fight.

“And all the credit goes to the team for the car they gave us this morning. Parker has quickly become an integral part of our team – extremely knowledgeable and helpful with feedback and setup. He almost took us to the front but P2 was great. It was fun, it was a clean, hard race.”

“Unfortunately, we were involved in an incident early,” said Creech. “We were able to get back out there, even with a damaged car, and put down some good laps before the second off. The team worked hard to get it back out there so it’s disappointing, but we’ll get ready for a test at Road America and the race weekend in a few weeks. Lance and Parker did a great job this weekend, as did Joao in the 33. Parker was awesome in the car – it was unfortunate we had the drive-through, it probably cost us the top spot, but we’ll take second.”

SCM would like to thank Alta Equipment Company and Focal One for their continued support.

Next up for Sean Creech Motorsport will be the IMSA SportsCar Weekend at Road America August 4 – 7. Garcia, Taylor take runner-up GTD PRO finish in return to Canada

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario (July 3, 2022) – Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor made their way back onto the GT Daytona (GTD) PRO podium Sunday as the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R placed second at the Chevrolet Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

It’s the first podium for the Corvette duo since April’s race at Long Beach for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The result boosted Garcia and Taylor back into second place in the GTD PRO Drivers Championship, with Chevrolet moving to second in the Manufacturers Championship with four races left in the season.

The No. 3 Corvette finished 1.115 seconds behind the winning No. 9 Porsche, which led all but nine of 111 laps.

A couple of early-race caution periods Sunday forced Corvette Racing engineers to alter the team’s pre-race plan. Starting fourth, Taylor drove a double-stint and moved up a spot at the start when one of the front-row GTD cars went around at the first corner. The No. 3 Corvette was on the inside line and got through the incident unscathed.

For the next hour and 40 minutes, Taylor was part of a three-car train of GTD PRO leaders that rarely were separated by more than one second. Taylor expertly saved fuel and his Michelin tires while at the same time maximizing the performance of the C8.R to remain with the leaders.

His persistence paid off when he made a lunge on the far end of the circuit to take second with 75 minutes to go. The No. 3 Corvette stopped for the second time with 64 minutes left as Garcia took over with full fuel and four fresh Michelin tires.

Two more yellows interrupted Garcia’s charge, which hampered what Corvette Racing hoped was an advantage on long runs. But every time Garcia got close to the Porsche, it would pull away again to about a lead of one second to the end of the race.

Corvette Racing’s next event in IMSA is the Northeast Grand Prix on July 15-16 from Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – FINISHED SECOND IN GTD PRO: “We gave it our all. It was a perfect race for us. We finished second, and that’s all we had. We pushed the winning car, but it wasn’t enough. Next race, we’ll try to go a little faster and do something different. This is what it also takes to win championships. So we need to stay in contact, and I’m sure the wins will come.”

Dealing with traffic: “It wasn’t easy. With the prototype traffic being so much faster than us, it was difficult to really get a chance to get close to the Porsche. Whenever the prototypes would pass, they would go and there would be another one pretty soon. Maybe with more LMP3s there would have been more of a chance to do something different. With the DPis being so much faster than us – especially with their cornering – it wasn’t ideal to try to work traffic in your favor. Now that we are in the slowest category instead of GTLM, you don’t have those opportunities to use traffic. All the traffic you’re in is going by. It’s difficult to use that in your favor.”

The last 20 minutes: “I think it felt like the Porsche was showing what they had to show. Whenever we would stop saving fuel or tires, it felt like they had some in reserve. We thought that without those two yellows and a more consistent stint, maybe we would have had a chance. Up until the last yellow I was saving the tires, but on the last yellow we knew it would be a race to the end. We both went 100 percent. They just had more. Every second I lost in traffic, it took five or six laps to get that back. It was difficult but in general we did a perfect race. We started fifth and finished second, so we gained a lot today.”

JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – FINISHED SECOND IN GTD PRO:”It was action-packed! The start was hectic. I got a bad start, actually, but there were some cars in front of me that saved my start. I thankfully was on the right line to cycle through up to third. Once we went to green and settled in, we were saving fuel. I could see the Aston Martin was struggling but it was going to be so hard to pass him without traffic. So I was saving as much as I could, and every time we go traffic I would try to stay close and make something happen. Once I got in clean air our car seemed to come alive a little bit. It had surprising pace, and I was quite happy with it. The Porsche was struggling a little bit toward the end of their stint. Hopefully it stays green. Tire degradation seems to be to our advantage so a long stint is what we are hoping for.”

Dealing with the traffic: “You just kind of hope and pray that they get the same bad luck every now and then. I think every P3 car that passed me was into Turn Eight; I had only one pass me into Turn One. I would see the other guys get held up every now and then. It comes and goes. We had a bunch of bad ones but we got some good ones, too.”

Overall thoughts: “It was a great day back at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and at the Chevrolet Grand Prix. We maximized what we could today. It’s not great for the overall points, but considering where we started the day we can be pretty happy with where we ended up. We’ll move on to Lime Rock and hopefully be a little more competitive there and move up in the championship as well.”

Cadillac claims the victory in Chevrolet Grand Prix

Van der Zande, Bourdais rise to the top for third time; Derani, Pla fight for third place

BOWMANVILLE, Ontario (July 3, 2022) – There are slices of the 2.459-mile, 10-turn Canadian Tire Motorsports Park that can either slow you down or provide overtaking opportunities, Renger van der Zande noted in the days leading up to the Chevrolet Grand Prix.

The co-driver of the No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R saw such a scenario develop with about 10 minutes remaining in the 2-hour, 40-minute race, which he quickly determined was an opportunity – possibly his only one – to move to the front of the field.

With his intended target approaching traffic in Turn 2, van der Zande threaded the No. 01 Cadillac Racing entry past the pole-winning No. 60 Acura and an LMP3 pack and into clean air and the eventual victory by 3.569 seconds. He set up the opportunity on a restart with 18 minutes left by overtaking the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R for second.

“So proud of Cadillac, Chip Ganassi Racing and everyone involved,” said van der Zande, who earned the 18th win in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition.

It was the second victory in the past three races and third overall on the season for van der Zande and teammate Sebastien Bourdais.

Bourdais, who qualified sixth and drove the first stint, enveloped his physically spent teammate in Victory Circle.

“I going to go back to the gym. This was hard work,” said van der Zande, who was runner-up in the 2018 race at CTMP in a Cadillac DPi. “The power steering was a big issue all race long. Seb came in and was like, ‘Oh, I’m not sure we’re going to make it.’ You need these fast corners and the power steering kept cutting (out).

“At the end, it got better and I was like, man if I can have a normal car with normal power steering, I might have a chance for a move. And then I was all in now. I went from first back to last, back to wherever. Then I thought, this is my day, I’m going to go for it. It was a great win.”

Van der Zande led 23 laps, including the final 10 after the decisive pass. With the victory, the No. 01 Cadillac Racing entry is third in the DPi standings with two races left.

“We had the speech today. I quoted the good old Kennedy speech about ‘we go to the moon not because it is easy but because it is hard.’ And we knew that coming in here today and Renger killed it. Sebastien hung in there. We were fighting a power steering issue the whole time. And it was awesome. These guys deserve it,” said Peter Baron, race strategist for the No. 01 Cadillac.

The No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R, co-driven by reigning DPi champion Pipo Derani and Olivier Pla, earned its fourth podium finish of the season. Derani finished just .732 of a second behind the second-place Acura.

Earl Bamber in the No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R overcame a drive-thru penalty with 33 minutes left to finish fourth with co-driver Alex Lynn. They combined to lead 13 laps.

The No. 5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac DPi-V.R, which Tristan Vautier drove to the third qualifying position, was in the hunt in the final 10 minutes with Richard Westbrook behind the wheel but was overtaken by the charging Derani and Bamber. They led 25 laps early in the race employing an alternate fuel strategy.

Cadillac Racing teams next head to Road America in Wisconsin for the 2-hour, 40-minute race on the 4-mile, 14-turn road course Aug. 7, where the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R is the defending winner. Reigning IMSA DPi champion Pipo Derani will be back behind the wheel of the No. 31 Action Express Racing entry along with co-driver Olivier Pla.

    Cadillac Racing from the cockpit

No. 01 V-Performance Academy Cadillac DPi-V.R (first place)

Sebastien Bourdais: “I didn’t know what to expect; I had never been here. I really honestly struggled this weekend. It’s all on Renger. From the back to the front a couple of times, he was just impressive in traffic and made it work. Hats off.”

Renger van der Zande: “We are very happy with the win today and with the speed we displayed on-track. I knew getting through traffic cleanly would be key. We were able to pass in traffic there at the end and the team kept me informed on when it was coming. I’m very proud of the team at Chip Ganassi Racing. Big thanks to Chip, Mike Hull, Mike O’Gara, Cadillac and everyone involved. This is why we go racing.”

No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R (third place)

Pipo Derani: “I think considering the last few races we did a job to get ourselves back onto the podium. It’s very competitive out there and we needed a good result, we needed to be back on the podium. So happy for the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac group and hopefully we can improve from here.”

Olivier Pla: “It was a crazy race. I lost position at the start and thought I could make it up in traffic again. I had a good car and then handing it off to Pipo to fight for position I thought we would be position for a podium finish. It’s good to start like that and I’m sure we’ll win more.”

No. 02 Cadillac Accessories Cadillac DPi-V.R (fourth place)

Alex Lynn: “Another P4 for the No. 02 Cadillac. Quite a bit more dramatic this time around. I think we had the fastest car and the fastest crew to win, but we didn’t and that’s racing.”

Earl Bamber: “Tough day for us finishing fourth. I think we definitely had a car to win, but the penalty set us back. Good job by the No. 01; it’s great to see Cadillac back in front. Now, we will keep fighting at Road America.”
