Corvette Racing, Porsche Racing take wins in IMSA event at Virginia

Ahead of the penultimate race at Road Atlanta, the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class and the GT Daytona (GTD) class had their own battles this weekend at Virginia International Raceway.

In one of the rarer times on the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar schedule, the GTLM and GTD category battled it out on the track with the exception of the DPi as DPi classes who will return for the final race of the season at Road Atlanta.

    GTLM

Corvette Racing has swept most of the races on the schedule this season with the No. 79 Porsche settling in the third and final position. When the teams rolled in on Friday, Corvette Racing was looking to do the same thing they had been doing all weekend, win. However, they had to fight for that win.

On Friday afternoon in qualifying, the No. 4 of Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy paced the field with laps of 1:40.263 seconds and 117.140 mph.

When the race began, Corvette was dominant, leading nearly every lap of the race albeit with the No. 3 of Jordan Taylor leading the way and Milner/Tandy trailing behind in second. At the 2 hours and 17-minute mark, Tandy took the lead from the No. 79 Porsche of Kevin Estre.

The battle continued between the two manufacturers, as the Porsche and Corvette had a shoving match. Tandy and Estre shoved each other off the track multiple times trading paint, while Estre, unfortunately, received the worst of the melee and wound up driving in the grass as a result.

Even though there was multiple contact between the two teams, no action was taken by IMSA officials.

From there, Tandy/Milner continued to show the way and take home their third straight victory of the year.

“Today is all about that guy right there,” Milner said. “He (Nick Tandy) made it happen today for sure. Porsche definitely had pace on us for sure, but when you have got a guy like that who can race like he does, he got a little bit, but he gave it right back. What an awesome race. That was a lot of fun to watch. I’m super happy for all of our Corvette Racing guys. We got a little lucky there with the No. 3 car. I think it was going to be close at the end. What a race! That was awesome.

“Look at this winning car,” Tandy, the overall race winner said. “First of all, congratulations to Corvette Racing, one-two again. It was an awesome race. It shows a way to win a race when you don’t have the fastest car. Honestly, the Porsche should have won the race. But honestly, when you kind of lose your brain and start driving stupid, stuff happens. Luckily with our Corvettes, we kept them on the track and didn’t do too much damage to them, so here we are talking to you.”

    2. Antonio Garcia -17.852 seconds
    3. Kevin Estre -38.665 seconds

    GTD

The GTD class was action-filled, including an on-track incident between the No. 96 of Bill Auberlen and the No. 3 of Garcia.

At the 2 hour and 30-minute mark, Auberlen was leading the race but was clipped on the inside by the No. 3 of Garcia and lost the lead. Following the incident, he had major right side damage to his machine and eventually finished 12th in the GTD running order, 1 lap down.

It was the Porsche 911 GT3R driver Laurens Vanthoor who took the lead and went on to win the GTD category, his fourth victory of the year.

“This win is the happiest I’ve got so far because yesterday was just our mistake, a stupid mistake,” Vanthoor said. “Today, when any mistake happened, they made up for it like triple the time because the pit stop is what got us out in front, which is amazing what they did.

“Zach Robichon (Vanthoor’s teammate), how quickly he got by at the start and up to the front. Those things helped give us the race. In all honesty, when I was in front of the BMW, I wasn’t very optimistic I was going to stay there because he was very quick. I pushed hard and pushed like it was qualifying laps. Managed to stay out in front at the end.”

Rob Ferriol and Katherine Legge Ready For Action In IMSA GTD No. 88 Richard Mille/GridRival Porsche GT3 R; Efrin Castro and Riley Dickinson Back In Action Off Podium Porsche Carrera Cup Finishes

DANVILLE, Virginia (October 7, 2021) – Team Hardpoint’s three-car Porsche racing effort, spanning the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Daytona (GTD) class and Porsche Carrera Cup North America, will have a home-field advantage this weekend at VIRginia International Raceway.

The team moved into their race shop at the VIRginia Motorsport Technology park on the grounds of the race track last November. Saturday’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIR features only the GT LeMans and GTD classes of the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in a two-hour, 40-minute race that begins at 12:10 p.m. EDT on Saturday and can be seen live over the air on NBC. The team’s two-car Porsche Carrera Cup effort races in a pair of 45-minute races live on IMSA.com/tv, at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 9 and at 12:15 p.m. EDT on Sunday, October 10.

The No. 88 Richard Mille/GridRival Porsche 911 GT3 R will once again be co-driven by team owner Rob Ferriol and Katherine Legge. The duo is coming off arguably their strongest overall performance of the season on the temporary street circuit at Long Beach.

Though it’s a home race for the team, it’s also a home race for Ferriol. As a resident of Fayetteville, North Carolina, just over two hours from VIR, Ferriol watched races as a fan for the first time at VIR; ran his first track day at VIR in 2015; made his club racing debut at VIR in 2016; and, while running IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup in 2018 and 2019, made a one-off start in the TCR class at VIR in 2018 and made his IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge GS class debut at VIR in 2019.

“There are certainly positives and negatives to this weekend at VIR,” Ferriol said. “Obviously, we know the track well and it’s our favorite. Having friends, family and partners here is fun. But we need to make sure we keep doing what we’ve been doing and not overdrive our No. 88 Richard Mille/GridRival Porsche 911 GT3 R just because we want a strong result. All that said, we have the opportunity to pull everything together that we’ve been working on this season but the rest of the GTD field isn’t going to pull over and just let it happen.”

Legge understands the importance of the home race for the team, but is focused on continuing the momentum that the team has carried through the past several races. The Team Hardpoint Porsche finished eighth at WeatherTech Racway Laguna Seca and ninth at the Long Beach Grand Prix, both times improving significantly from the start of the race.

“I am really looking forward to the home stretch, figuratively and literally,” Legge said. “VIR is the team’s home race, and the next time out at Road Atlanta is my personal one. We have done a few miles of testing at VIR so I feel more relative comfort and confidence going into this one. That, coupled with the fact the team, drivers, and car continue to get stronger each outing, gives us renewed excitement. I think the whole team are all buoyed by momentum going into the remaining two races. VIR is such a neat track, and I enjoy driving there very much, I have had some epic battles and some great results in the past and want nothing more than to repeat the same this year. Rob and I are still hungry for that elusive podium and we will be pushing as hard as ever to get it here!”

Drivers Efrin Castro and Riley Dickinson are each looking for strong run in Porsche Carrera Cup North America competition.

In Castro’s last appearance during the Porsche Together Fest tripleheader at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, he piloted his No. 65 Fine Fare Supermarkets/GoDominicanRepublic.com Porsche 911 GT3 Cup to a pair of wins in the Pro-Am class. Those gold medals were his second and third wins of the season and his eight podium finishes in 11 of 16 races have him secure placed in the second slot of the season-long point championship.

Dickinson earned two additional overall podiums at Indianapolis, bringing his total to five in the first 11 races in the ultra-competitive Pro class of the championship. Dickinson’s runner-up finish in the No. 53 Porsche Austin/Team Hardpoint Porsche 911 GT3 Cup during race one at IMS was a season best, and opens the door to a strong finish this weekend at the team’s home race.

“I’m really looking forward to this weekend,” Dickinson said. “VIR is such a rewarding track to drive on, there are so many areas where the smallest of margins can and will have a huge impact on the overall lap time. We have some weather in the forecast, which will only mean that the Porsche Carrera Cup North America racing will be even more intense. I can’t wait to go and represent Team Hardpoint at our home race!”

The race weekend opens on Friday with WeatherTech and Porsche Carrera Cup practices at 8 a.m. EDT, followed by a second round of practices for both series mid-day. Ferriol and Legge will qualifying the No. 88 Richard Mille/GridRival Porsche 911 GT3 R at 4:35 p.m. EDT that afternoon. Saturday features Carrera Cup qualifying, the noon time IMSA WeatherTech Championship race, and an afternoon Porsche Carrera Cup race. The final Carrera Cup race takes place on Sunday, October 10.

    Noteworthy:

-The Team Hardpoint paddock and pit box will have extra visitors during this weekend’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIR.

Michelin is bringing a group of U.S. Army soldiers from nearby Fort Bragg to Saturday’s race as part of the base Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program. The 10 soldiers will, among other things, visit the Team Hardpoint transporter and race shop throughout the day, and get to see some of the race from the Team Hardpoint pit box. The military connection is important to Team Hardpoint, as Ferriol served eight years as an enlisted Intelligence Specialist in the US Marine Corps, followed by another five years as a government civilian with Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). Across his 13 years of government and military service, he has deployed to multiple conflict zones around the globe in support of US counterterrorism operations, including Iraq, Afghanistan, South America and Africa. Jason Link, Team Hardpoint’s General Manager, served in the US Army for 14 years, including four years as an infantryman with the 3/75th Ranger Regiment and for 10 years as an Operator with the 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force), and other members of the team’s crew have military experience as well.

    About Team Hardpoint:
Hardpoint Motorsports was founded by Rob Ferriol in 2018 with the vision of combining his experience as a successful entrepreneur with his passion for racing. Headquartered at VIRginia International Raceway, the team’s 2021 plans include a full-season effort in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship in a Porsche 911 GT3 R and a multi-car effort in the IMSA Porsche Carrera Cup North America. TPC Racing’s Vernon McClure Ready For VIR Round Of Porsche Carrera Cup North America

McClure is TPC Racing’s Lone Entrant at This Weekend’s IMSA-Sanctioned Doubleheader, But at a Track Team and Driver Know Well

DANVILLE, Virginia (October 7, 2021) – TPC Racing and Vernon McClure’s No. 10 Main Street Homes/TPC Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup are ready for this weekend’s doubheleader at VIRginia International Raceway (VIR), Rounds 12 and 13 of the Porsche Carrera Cup North America season.

The Porsche Carrera Cup North America will race in a pair of 45-minute races live on IMSA.com/tv, at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 9 and at 12:15 p.m. EDT on Sunday, October 10.

McClure is making his second appearance at the track this season, which is the closest on the IMSA schedule to both McClure’s home in Chesterfield, Virginia and the TPC Racing shop in Jessup, Maryland. McClure challenged for a podium position in the Porsche Sprint Challenge back in June, and races in the Pro-Am category this weekend.

“It’s going to be great to race here again,” McClure said. “I love this track, it’s my favorite track and I’m pretty close to home here.”

McClure earned his first career IMSA podium at VIR in what was then the Porsche GT3 Cup back in 2019. As a team, TPC Racing has earned at least one podium in Porsche’s single-make championship at VIR dating back to 2018.

“This is a track that we’ve had success at in a variety of championships,” Harris Levitas, Director of Race Operations, said. “We feel like we know VIR well, and Vernon has had success here in the past. He’s been coming to grips with the new 992-generation Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in the past few races, so we’re really hoping that the combination of those two things can help him get a good result. It’s a tremendously competitive field so we’ve got our work cut out for us, but we’re confident we can put up a strong showing.”

The race weekend gets underway with two Friday qualifying sessions for the Porsche Carrera Cup field, followed by qualifying on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. EDT to set the grid for Saturday afternoon’s 3:30 p.m. EDT race. Sunday’s race begins at 12:15 p.m. EDT.

  • Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Teams in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Compete this Weekend at VIRginia International Raceway

Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Teams in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Compete this Weekend at VIRginia International Raceway

DANVILLE, Virginia – Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing teams prepare to compete in the next-to-the-last races of the season in both the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series this weekend at VIRginia International Raceway (VIR). For the first time since July at Watkins Glen International, two Mercedes-AMG GT3 teams will compete in the GT Daytona (GTD) class in the weekend’s featured IMSA WeatherTech Championship Michelin GT Challenge on Saturday, followed by four Mercedes-AMG GT4 teams competing in the top-level Grand Sport (GS) class in Sunday’s featured two-hour Michelin Pilot Challenge race.

Saturday’s two-hour, 40-minute WeatherTech Championship race is the second and final event of the year exclusively highlighting the production-based cars of the GT Le Mans (GTLM) and GTD classes. The “GT-only” feature race airs live at noon EDT this Saturday, October 9, on the flagship NBC network. Sunday’s two-hour Pilot Challenge race streams live at 2:05 p.m. EDT on TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold. International viewers can watch both races live at www.IMSA.tv.

The last time a pair of Mercedes-AMG GT3 teams competed in a WeatherTech GTD race was at Watkins Glen in upstate New York in a special sprint race leading into the Fourth of July holiday weekend, Friday, July 2. The same teams carrying the Mercedes-AMG flag this weekend – the No. 28 Alegra Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 and No. 32 Gilbert Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 – both put in solid performances at The Glen in July.

Alegra, with co-drivers Michael de Quesada and Daniel Morad, finished a season-best fifth, matching the same result secured less than a week earlier at The Glen in the Sahlen’s Six Hour race.

Gilbert Korthoff crossed the finish line seventh in the Glen sprint to record a solid result in the team’s IMSA GTD debut with co-drivers Guy Cosmo and Shane Lewis.

Alegra competes for the first time since the July Glen race at VIR with de Quesada and Morad remaining the No. 28’s driver duo.

Gilbert Korthoff makes it third GTD start of the season in Saturday’s Michelin GT Challenge race. Cosmo now pairs with former VIR Mercedes-AMG GT3 race winner and highly regarded track “ringer” Mike Skeen, who makes his first start in the Gilbert Korthoff Mercedes-AMG GT3.

Morad also has race-winning Mercedes-AMG GT3 experience at VIR, and he and his Alegra teammates join the Gilbert Korthoff squad in aiming for nothing short of additional season-best finishes this weekend.

Four Mercedes-AMG GT4 teams compete in the GS class in Sunday’s two-hour Pilot Challenge race in which – like Skeen with Gilbert Korthoff – one entrant is calling on a familiar driver with winning experience.

Eric Foss will co-drive the No. 56 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 for the first time with a driver other than long-time teammate Jeff Mosing. Kenny Murillo, the 25-year-old son of team owner and former champion driver Ken Murillo, steps in for VIR after Mosing broke his foot shortly after he and Foss finished fourth at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca one race ago.

Just last weekend, the younger Murillo clinched a driver championship with the family team in another series co-driving a Mercedes-AMG GT4. He has also stepped in several times in recent seasons as a substitute driver or endurance-race addition in the team’s sister No. 65 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4, which is co-driven this weekend by Brent Mosing and Tim Probert.

After a one-race absence, the No. 11 FCP Euro Mercedes-AMG GT4 team and co-drivers Michael Hurczyn and Nate Vincent is set for its sixth race of the season after debuting at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course last May. The team deliberately skipped last month’s round at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and arrives in VIR focused on improving on a season-best finish of ninth place at Lime Rock Park in July.

Another strong in-season addition to the Mercedes-AMG Motorsport customer ranks in Pilot Challenge is the No. 18 CB Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4 team with co-drivers Mark Kwamme and Trenton Estep. Kwamme, Estep and the No. 18 team make their third GS-class start this weekend following their first races at Road America and Laguna Seca.

Noticeably absent from the VIR Pilot Challenge entry list is Winward Racing, which has been one of the top two-car Mercedes-AMG Motorsport customer teams in the series since 2018. Winward has ended its GT4 program for the remainder of 2021 to focus on its return to the WeatherTech GTD ranks in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 in November’s Petit Le Mans.

Winward won the Rolex 24 At Daytona in its team debut in both the twice-around-the-clock race and the GTD class last January in the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3. The winning co-drivers were Russell Ward, Indy Dontje, Philipp Ellis and Maro Engel.

The Petit Le Mans effort, which will have its driver lineup confirmed in the coming weeks, is another step in Winward’s planned move up to fulltime competition in the 2022 WeatherTech Championship with the Mercedes-AMG GT3.

The in-season race date change for the VIR event to October from its original August date also factored into Winward’s decision. Ward along with key team personnel have been committed to this weekend’s GT World Challenge Endurance Cup race in Barcelona since early this year.

Guy Cosmo, Driver – No. 32 Gilbert Korthoff Mercedes-AMG GT3: “I’m really excited. This program since its inception has overcome a lot. As far as timeline and personnel, to start a team mid-season is a big undertaking. We’re at the point where the team has hired some really great people that were available, and we’re showing up at VIR with probably our most focused and prepared effort. I know from the team side we’re a big step forward, and from the driver’s side, showing up at VIR knowing that the car is where it needs to be, I’m just really excited about it. It’s a track that I love, I know we can perform really well there, and being teamed up with Mike Skeen is going to be really outstanding. He’s a great guy and he knows this place like no other. I think the Mercedes-AMG GT3 should suit about every single spot on that track. I’m not well versed in the strengths and weaknesses of the cars we’re racing against, but I know how well this Mercedes-AMG GT3 performs. I’m honestly expecting to be a really strong contender because we’re showing up with this Mercedes-AMG GT3.”

Eric Foss, Driver – No. 56 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4: “The Mercedes-AMG GT4 is such a great car. It’s super consistent, it’s very drivable and inspires a lot of confidence. Plus, Kenny knows this car very well, he just clinched a championship in it, so he is the perfect plug-and-play option. I think we will do well. I have co-driven with Jeff for so long that it would be strange driving with anybody but him, but I don’t feel that way with Kenny because he has been with us since the beginning. He was just a kid when Jeff and I were starting out, and we have seen him grow up and learn with the team all of these years. He is ready and has the talent to back it up.”

Kenny Murillo, Driver – No. 56 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4: “Eric is a really big mentor to me, and we’ve always dreamed about running the same car together. Unfortunately, it’s at the expense of Jeff Mosing, but everything I do at VIR and maybe Road Atlanta will be for Jeff. It’s going to be a totally different vibe without him. He’s the life of our team, the heart of our team, we’re going to miss him this weekend but hopefully I can make him proud.”

  • Rebel Rock Racing excited to return to IMSA racing at VIR

Rebel Rock Racing excited to return to IMSA racing at VIR

DANVILLE, VA (5 October 2021) – Rebel Rock Racing has momentum on its side for its return to IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Sunday at Virginia International Raceway, following off a successful two-day test at the circuit.

Robin Liddell and Frank DePew will co-drive the team’s No. 71 Urban Grid Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R in the two-hour race, the penultimate round of the 2021 campaign. The two drivers were pleased with a recent two-day test last month at VIR.

“Testing went very well,” Liddell said. “We had two good days with lots of running, where we put lots of miles on the car. The car performed very well, with no issues. We’re actually feeling pretty good about the weekend.”

Rebel Rock had a strong start to the season when it won at Sebring back in March. But since then, a variety of challenges have hampered the campaign. But after sitting out the Laguna Seca event weekend, having a productive test and re-setting for the final two races of the season, the team is eager to get back to competition this weekend.

“We’re back with our original Camaro,” Liddell said. “This car has been repaired since Lime Rock and we’ve taken time to make sure it’s right and we’re happy with it. We put a lot of miles on it, and it performed very well. We feel we’re in reasonable shape for next week. I think we’re as prepared now as we possibly could be for the race, and we’re excited about that.”

Liddell is also excited about the progress of DePew, a Virginia resident who considers VIR his
    home track.

“Frank has a lot of miles at VIR, and although he’s still working on some of the nuances and little bits I’m helping to make him more aware of he performed very well,” Liddell explained. “He’s made some good improvements since last year, and in fact he did the quickest time he’s done around VIR so hopefully he feels well prepared for what should be a good weekend for us.”

Following the withdrawal from Road America after problems were discovered on the team’s back-up car, the team opted to take some time off to repair the primary car.

“It was a difficult decision not to go to [WeatherTech Raceway] Laguna Seca after the disappointment at Road America,” Liddell said. “We’ve had various incidents this season since our win at Sebring. We decided that unless we could put some proper mileage on the car before we went to a race event, we didn’t want to go out there half-cocked. We wanted to do a proper test, and then go race. We didn’t have that opportunity for Laguna. But after our test, as a group we’re excited to get back out – we’re as prepared as we could be. I think we’re reasonably happy with where we are.”

Following VIR, the last race of the year will be at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on Friday, Nov. 12.

“The main goal is to finish out the season strong and get good results in the last couple of events if we can,” Liddell said. “That obviously will be a shot in the arm for over the winter.”

The team will have a pair of one-hour practice sessions at VIR, at 2:15 p.m. Friday and 8:45 a.m. Saturday (all times ET). Qualifying will be at 8:20 a.m. Sunday morning, with the Virginia is for Racing Lovers Grand Prix taking the green flag at 2:10 p.m.

Wright Motorsports Carries Consistency and Momentum into VIR IMSA Weekend

BATAVIA, Ohio. (October 5, 2021) – Wright Motorsports is Virginia bound for the final IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship sprint race of the year, the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR. Wright Motorsports will participate in the weekend with a three-series effort, racing in WeatherTech, the Michelin Pilot Challenge, and Porsche Carrera Cup North America Presented by the Cayman Islands.

“It has been a long season, but each of our programs has been doing a phenomenal job,” said Team Owner John Wright. “VIRginia International Raceway is one of our favorite tracks to visit, so we’re excited to be back racing here for the second time this year. We’re looking forward to a strong points weekend, keeping our Wright Motorsports Porsches on the podium.”

    IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship
Before the WeatherTech teams battle out for ten hours next month in Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, the GTLM and GTD classes will compete in this weekend’s two-hour and 40-minute sprint race. Entering the event, nine drivers, including Patrick Long, remain in contention for the GTD drivers’ championship, while Wright and four other programs are eligible for the 2021 team title. With three consecutive podium finishes, the drivers and crew of the No. 16 Porsche 911 GT3 R have a strong momentum headed into VIR, aiming to clinch their first victory of the 2021 championship.

With high-speed corners and long straightaways, VIRginia International Raceway always delivers exciting racing for the two WeatherTech GT classes (GTLM and GTD). Though the race may be short, the action will be sure to be exhilarating. Fans can tune in to imsa.tv to watch the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR live onboard from the Wright Motorsports Porsche, as well as tune in to NBC for the official race broadcast. The green flag will drop on Saturday, October 9 at 12:00 PM Eastern.

    Patrick Long
    No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R
I am looking forward to being back at one of the most pure and unique circuits on the IMSA calendar. It’s a technical track for the driver and engineer to dial the car in, and tricky to pass on! The GT only formula will lend a different tempo to the race, and I expect a very sprint-natured two-hour and 40-minutes. I am so proud of the effort this team has been putting out all season, and I can’t wait to get back out there and to continue the charge toward more podiums.

    Trent Hindman
    No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R
Name me a driver that doesn’t look forward to running at VIR every year? I don’t think that person exists. Most of the old-school racetracks in North America are high speed and even higher commitment, but VIR takes it to another level in every aspect. All drivers love a racetrack where fortune still favors the brave.

    Michelin Pilot Challenge
After an incredibly successful weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca last month, where the No. 16 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport won from pole position, Wright Motorsports remains close in the GS driver and team championship hunt with two races remaining. With three pole positions, five podiums, and one win, consistency has been the name of the game for the team’s GS effort, and the team will bring its best game to the Alton, Virginia circuit to keep gaining in the points battle.

For the one and only time this year, the Michelin Pilot Challenge competitors will race after the headlining series, with the Virginia Is for Racing Lovers Grand Prix beginning on Sunday, October 10 at 2:10 PM Eastern, airing live on NBC Sports Network’s TRACKPASS streaming app.

    Ryan Hardwick
    No. 16 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport
VIR is one of my absolute favorite tracks on the IMSA schedule! My favorite part of the track is the uphill esses, in particular, turn nine. That corner is so tough to get right when you carry a lot of speed through the esses on the way up, and when you crest the top of turn nine, it’s very tempting to back out of the throttle which really hurts all your momentum. That’s always a tough corner to get just right. I have some great memories of racing at VIR and have been fortunate to win several races here. This year’s event will be a very important race in our quest for the Michelin Pilot Challenge series championship. With only two rounds remaining, we are aiming to get another win to keep our momentum going strong.

    Jan Heylen
    No. 16 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport
Wright Motorsports has had some great success at VIR in all series. We all love going to VIR. The big thing is the people. That is why we love going there. It is always a friendly environment. They do a great job of putting the event together and making everyone feel at home. That really separates VIR from some other places. It has to be at the very top of everybody’s list as a driver’s track. It is an old-school track with a little bit of everything: long straightaways, high-speed corners, good places to overtake. It has it all. It has always been a lot of fun with good action. The track promotes overtaking. We have two championships we are in the running for, so VIR is going to be a big race for us in both the Michelin Pilot Challenge as well as in WeatherTech GTD.

Porsche Carrera Cup North America Presented by the Cayman Islands
A total of 28 entries are signed up for the Porsche Carrera Cup North America presented by the Cayman Islands, and Wright Motorsport will compete in the doubleheader with Hutton McKenna in the Pro-Am class in his No. 88 Porsche 992 Cup car, alongside John Goetz in the No. 57 Porsche 992 Cup car. Max Root rounds out the Wright trio, in the No. 7 Moorespeed-Wright Motorsports entry, after missing the previous rounds at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to race with the team at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. This weekend, the one-make Porsche series will hold two-45 minute races, on Saturday, October 9 at 3:30 PM Eastern, and Sunday, October 10 at 12:15 pm Eastern. All the action will air live on porschecarreracup.us .

Stoner Car Care Racing Ready for the Penultimate IMSA Event of the Season

With significant test and race time at VIR this season, the team aims for a top finish in Sunday’s two-hour race

ORLANDO, Fla. (4 October 2021) – Rob Ecklin Jr. and Ramin Abdolvahabi are back in action with the Stoner Car Care Racing fielded by Automatic Racing team this weekend, ready to take on the penultimate race of the 2021 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge (IMPC) season, the Virginia is for Racing Lovers Grand Prix (NBC Sports Gold’s TRACKPASS, Sunday 2:00 p.m. Eastern).

Ecklin and Abdolvahabi take the wheel of the No. 09 Stoner Car Care Aston Martin Vantage GT4 with a significant amount of recent track time at VIRginia International Raceway under their belts. The duo and the Stoner Car Care team completed a successful two-day test at VIR last May and contested their fifth World Racing League event of the season on the 3.27-mile, 17-turn road course two weeks ago as they aim to end the IMSA season on a high note.

Abdolvahabi, a neurosurgeon in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. and Ecklin, the CEO of Lancaster, Pa.-based Stoner Car Care, have split their time between the WRL and IMSA as their professional commitments have factored into their 2021 racing schedules. They have not competed on an IMPC weekend since June, but hope that their frequent familiarity with VIR this season helps them bring home a season-high finish.

“We did a test day back in May and that was very productive for both Ramin and I, as we each set personal best times,” said Ecklin. “So to go back there a few weeks ago with the WRL and get plenty of track time puts us in a good position for this weekend.”

“Rob and Ramin did close to 100 laps each two weeks ago so they should be in good shape this weekend,” said Automatic Racing team manager David Russell. “We had the two-day test back in May but they hadn’t raced at VIR since 2019. It’s great to have them back this weekend, we know them and their driving styles so well. It’s important to have that continuity and chemistry. They know each other so well but they communicate differently about the car and it’s a good balance, to hear two different perspectives.

“The track time they’ve gotten this year with the WRL adds to their confidence – with 80 cars on track, you seldom get a clean lap so you have to figure out how to deal with that,” continued Russell. “They know what they need to do and where they need to place the car to get the lap time, so the process is easier. And this is one of our favorite tracks, it’s so well managed and user friendly in so many ways. It has everything as a track: different terrain, low and high-speed, long duration sweepers, style corners – and all of that in combination, so it’s super demanding and technical.”

As the team turns its focus to the final two IMPC races of the season, Ecklin appreciates both the racing and the business opportunities available at the IMSA weekends.

“As drivers, obviously the racing is our primary focus, and IMSA delivers such a good product week in and week out,” said Ecklin. “But from a marketing standpoint, we’re also here to get brand exposure (both for Stoner Car Care and Invisible Glass) and IMSA does a great job in that regard, both on and off the racetrack. Getting the fans back was so important, both for marketing and of course for the atmosphere on the weekends. We’re happy that they’re back!”

Part of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIR, the VIRginia is for Racing Lovers Grand Prix takes the green flag Sunday at 2:10 p.m. Eastern. The race will be broadcast live in the U.S. on NBC Sports Gold’s TrackPass, while international viewers can watch via IMSA.tv. IMSA Radio will also be available at IMSA.com. NBCSN will broadcast a two-hour race recap, currently scheduled to air Thursday, October 14 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern (check local listings).

CORVETTE RACING AT LONG BEACH: Another Win for No. 4 C8.R

Milner/Tandy pairing comes out on top against Taylor/Garcia in Corvette street fight

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 25, 2021) – Corvette Racing’s Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy won their second straight race in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship on Saturday – a GT Le Mans (GTLM) victory in the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach with the No. 4 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Chevrolet Corvette C8.R.

Milner passed No. 3 Corvette Racing teammate Jordan Taylor near the 50-minute mark, and Tandy drove a traffic-filled final stint as the Corvette Racing program won for the eighth time at the southern California street event. It’s the second street circuit win of the year for the Milner/Tandy duo, which also won a non-points race in June at Detroit’s Belle Isle circuit.

Milner won for the fourth time his career at Long Beach while Tandy took his second victory there.

Tandy took a 0.75-second victory over Antonio Garcia, Taylor’s teammate in the No. 3 Mobil 1/SiriusXM Corvette C8.R. The runner-up result did move Garcia and Taylor closer to their second straight GTLM Drivers Championship and a repeat Manufacturers crowd for Chevrolet.

As is typically the case at Long Beach, traffic played a huge role throughout the 100-minute sprint. Taylor began on pole position with Milner never more than two seconds behind. The ebb and flow of being passed by faster prototypes but passing slower GT Daytona (GTD) cars caused the gap between the two C8.Rs to fluctuate throughout.

The winning move came at the race’s halfway point as Taylor was balked by a GTD car, which allowed Milner to find some extra momentum and get alongside his teammate just before the short backstretch. The two Corvettes ran in that order before Taylor made the No. 3 Corvette’s only stop of the race with 41 minutes to go. Milner came in a lap later for the switch-over to Tandy, who rejoined the race in the lead and clear of Garcia by about two seconds.

As was the case in the first part of the race, traffic made Tandy’s lead grow and shrink over the course of a lap. But neither Corvette driver put a foot wrong for the final stint.

Corvette Racing’s next event is the Michelin GT Challenge at Virginia International Raceway on Oct. 8-9.

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – GTLM WINNER:
WE DIDN’T GET A GOOD LOOK AT THE PASS. TELL US WHAT HAPPENED. “The pass was done in Turn Six. I did a 360 and then a kick-flip afterward… Nah, lap traffic is always such a huge part of this race. When you have two cars that are so close and so competitive here together, trying to find an opportunity to pass on the racetrack is difficult. My plan was to stick with Jordan as best I could and take any opportunity that arose in traffic. That’s what happened at Turn Six. Because the GTD cars have ABS, they can brake later than we can. Jordan went for a move on the inside of that corner and it didn’t quite stick. His exit was compromised and I was able to get outside of him on the entry and that’s the preferred line there. At times it’s frustrating being stuck behind somebody. I’ve raced here for a long time and it’s happened to me. Just using that experience worked out for us. The pit stop was massively important here. It’s always limited by the driver change and four tires. That was the case again here, and everything lined up right. Nick did a great job. You have to make good decisions in traffic always. One bad decision can mean seconds of lap time and it can mean losing a position. He did an awesome job of managing traffic well and bringing our Corvette home.”

RACING HARD AGAINST TEAMMATES: “It’s the age-old rule in racing: you can’t hit your teammate. That’s kind of the rule we live by at Corvette Racing, but we are allowed to race. We can try to pass each other on the racetrack – even without traffic – if the opportunity arises. Because the cars are so close and it’s the same equipment, we know exactly where they are strong and where we are strong. We can look at the same video and data. To find a big difference on the track in pure pace is pretty hard to do. In those situations, the traffic usually affords you the opportunity to make a pass that can be clean. I really only had the one opportunity and thankfully I was close enough to take advantage of that.”

WINNING AT LONG BEACH: “The atmosphere here at Long Beach is fantastic with the crowd and energy that they bring. Not that we haven’t had fans for a year-and-a-half now, but this was the first time I really felt the energy of the fans. You miss it in some ways. Before the start of the race, there was so many fans in the stands. It’s one of the things that you get accustomed to after a long time. Now that we haven’t had it for a long time, to feel it again here at Long Beach is fantastic. I’m not sure that has any impact when you’re in the car, but it makes for a fun event for them and us as drivers and as a team.”

RACING AGAINST GTD CARS: “That class has gotten super competitive the last couple of years. They’re doing the same job we are. For us at Corvette Racing, we don’t look at that class as something easy in any way. If anything it’s more difficult. For those guys to get wins in that class is very difficult. Whoever races in that class next year is going to have a hard time.”

NICK TANDY, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “I’m really happy to win again at Long Beach and with Tommy. My job was pretty simple in the end. The stint Tommy did running up to the pitstop was crucial. Getting past the 3 car enabled us to deny them track position before the stop was a good call. Once we came back out in front, we knew the car coming out in front after the stop cycle would be difficult to beat. It worked out perfectly. The team did a flawless stop, and that’s one of the key things at Long Beach. It’s often that we are fuel-defined by the pitstop time. Here we don’t need to take a full tank, so often it’s down to the driver change time and tire change. Pretty much everything synced together. I got my belts tight and off we went.”

WINNING AT LONG BEACH: “I’d reiterate what Tommy said. It’s awesome to be back at this event. I think I’ve seen more people here this weekend than ever. Anytime you get to come race at Long Beach, it’s a classic event. It’s always a favorite to come to. The races are frenetic. Getting a trophy from the Long Beach Grand Prix is always a big one.”

LONG BEACH NEXT YEAR: “If Corvette Racing goes into GTD next year, we’ve been in the paddock with these teams and drivers. You can see the level that the category is top professional racing. We always look to have great racing. We always know that the best wins are when you face the toughest competition. This is what Corvette Racing wants to do. We want to race the best competition possible no matter where that may be. It’s great that we have all these different types of cars and classes within sports car racing that these teams and manufacturers can go racing in.”

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – SECOND IN GTLM: “Obviously you always want to win. The pit cycle didn’t go our way and we lost track position right before the stop. From that point on, we didn’t have the advantage of over-cutting so we had to pit early. The car was really good. Even if I had a two- or three-second deficit initially, I was able to catch back up again to Nick. As we saw, it’s almost impossible to pass unless you hit traffic the right way. That’s the main thing. I stayed where I was and wait for a mistake and a little traffic. On a street circuit, you can’t risk it like if we were fighting another manufacturer. You want to win but you always know that is your teammate, too. It was fun to go flat-out around this track, and I could tell Nick was trying hard, too.”

JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R – SECOND IN GTLM: “It wasn’t a bad race and to finish second. It definitely was tricky with traffic. Some guys did not want to lift or let anyone go, which was frustrating but it’s part of the race. Everyone has to deal with it. So another good day for Corvette Racing with a 1-2 finish. For us in the 3 car, I think we’re pretty close to the championship. It opens things up to take more risks the next races, which will be fun.”

Team Hardpoint Leaves Long Beach With Ninth Place Finish in IMSA WeatherTech Championship

Rob Ferriol Improved Four Positions in His Opening Stint; Katherine Legge Turned Second Quickest Lap of the Race in the
    No. 88 Richard Mille/GridRival Porsche 911 GT3 R

LONG BEACH, California (September 25, 2021) – Team Hardpoint co-drivers Rob Ferriol and Katherine Legge scored a ninth-place in Saturday’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GT Daytona (GTD) at the Long Beach Grand Prix with the team’s No. 88 Richard Mille/GridRival Porsche 911 GT3 R.

The top-10 finish was a strong effort for the team, making their debut on the Long Beach temporary circuit and competing in just the second street race in Team Hardpoint’s short history.

The Saturday race meant that the IMSA Championship had two practice sessions and qualifying on Friday, leaving minimal time for Team Hardpoint and Ferriol, making his Long Beach debut, to learn the track prior to qualifying. Ferriol qualified just 15th of the 17 GTD cars entered to the event, but had a car ready for the longer run in the race.

Ferriol was ready for the start of the 100-minute race, a full hour shorter than a traditional IMSA sprint race. He had moved forward two positions just eight minutes in, and picked up an additional position prior to the lone full course caution of the race that came just 12 minutes into the race.

When Ferriol came to pit lane with one hour and four minutes to go after completing his required 35 minutes of drive time, he was running 11th and passed the Porsche GT3 R to Legge.

“We feel really good,” Ferriol, also the Team Hardpoint owner, said. “We felt like we left a lot undone at Detroit with our rather early end to the race. We knew we had a good car for a street race based on what we had done at Detroit, and we felt coming into the weekend we were going to be strong. It’s a Porsche track, and we as a Porsche team are getting smarter. We showed that through practice, and had a bit of a bobble in qualifying. But for the race, if we had an opportunity to qualify better we would certainly have had a better finish because Katherine was the class of the field working her way through. I managed to pick up a couple of positions in my stint, so I’m happy. We moved up six spots over the course of a 100-minute race at probably one of the hardest tracks to pass at.”

Legge had a delay in pit lane, with the pitting car in the box in front of Team Hardpoint leaving a wheel in the way as she tried to leave. Legge spent the first half of her stint closing the gap to her fellow competitors. She moved by three in quick succession and was 10th with 27 minutes to go.

With the 1.968-mile track clear in front of her, Legge and the No. 88 Richard Mille/GridRival Porsche 911 GT3 R was the quickest car on track in the final 25 minutes of the race. Her best lap of 1:20.180 (88.361 mph) was the second-fastest of the race, just 0.042-second behind the GTD class best.

“The team did a really good job and gave me a really good car,” Legge said. “We were just unfortunate, honestly. We were hoping for a yellow, we were praying for a yellow. We wanted to catch the pack and go fight them because we had a good car and we could have done it. Both Rob and I made a couple of strong passes and the car was strong so on pace we should have finished a lot further up. It just wasn’t to be today. Having said that, look how far we’ve come since the beginning of the year. We’ve worked really hard on the setup and the tire side, where we haven’t been so strong on qualifying and at the start of the runs. We’ve always been stronger toward the end of the runs. We’ve been working really hard at putting together a better all-around package, and the team knocked it out of the park on this one.”

The team turns its attention to its home race in just two weeks, back on the east coast at VIRginia International Raceway (VIR). The Michelin GT Challenge, a two-hour, 40-minute sprint race featuring only IMSA’s GT classes, comes at the home of Team Hardpoint. The team’s 10,000 square foot race shop is located at VIR’s Virginia Motorsport Technology Park on the grounds at VIR.

“Seeing Katherine out there running fast lap after fast lap was a great moment for us on the timing stand, knowing how hard we continue to work week in and week out,” Ferriol said. “Despite what position we were in at the time, to see her being the fastest car on track was really good for us and we’re looking forward to coming back to VIR to get that result.”

The team moves to its home race running eighth in the GTD team championship with the No. 88 Porsche. The VIR round is another condensed two-day event for the WeatherTech Championship, with a two-hour, 40-minute race at noon EDT on Saturday, October 9. That race will air live over the air on NBC.

Wright Motorsports Keeps Podium Streak Going and Championship Tight After Battle on the Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif., (September 25, 2021) – Wright Motorsports secured a third-place finish on Saturday afternoon at the Long Beach Grand Prix, keeping the points battle tight for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD team title. Patrick Long, Trent Hindman, and the crew on the No. 16 1st Phorm Porsche 911 GT3 R excelled under pressure on the downtown streets of Long Beach, earning their third-straight podium finish.

As is the usual for street courses, the three pre-race practice and qualifying sessions were hampered by red flags, eliminating the amount of time the competitors had to run on track and dial in on their optimal setups for the race. Following a tight qualifying session, Trent Hindman set the team to start sixth on the 17-car GTD grid.

The field took the green flag under perfectly sunny conditions, and Hindman held sixth behind the No. 63 Ferrari of Daniel Mancinelli. Hindman stayed close with consistent lap times, moving to fifth place by the first full-course caution. He restarted behind the No. 9 of Zacharie Robichon, and the battles immediately commenced at the drop of the green flag. After a side-by-side fight between the points-leading No. 96 BMW of Robby Foley and the No. 39 Audi of Richard Heistand, the BMW went nose-first into the tires, advancing the Wright Motorsports Porsche to the fourth position.

With 60-minutes remaining, the team called Hindman in for the one and only pit stop of the day. The No. 16 Porsche took on fresh tires and fuel, trading out Hindman for Patrick Long as well. The team executed a flawless and speedy stop, gaining a position in pit lane as Long rejoined the race. The Lamborghini of Bryan Sellers led the GTD field with the No. 14 Lexus of Jack Hawksworth and Patrick Long charging behind in second and third. The No. 39 Audi tagged another car, this time the Wright Porsche, while exiting the hairpin. The Audi made contact with the Porsche’s right rear corner, but Long expertly saved the car from hitting the wall and was able to continue without losing position. While Long charged forward and closed in on the Lexus again, the No. 9 Porsche of Laurens Vanthoor joined the fight, eventually taking third place from Long.

It was a four-car battle for the final two podium spots in the final 13 minutes. Vanthoor passed Hawksworth and pulled away, lighting a fire on Long’s competitive spirit as well. The strategists in pit lane gave Long the “all-clear” to push with all effort, and after an excruciating several laps of navigating through traffic and the tight turns of the Long Beach street circuit, Long dove on the inside of turn eight, overtaking the Lexus and securing third-place.

He wasted no time putting distance between the 1st Phorm Porsche and the Lexus, pulling away and closing the several-second gap to the Pfaff Porsche in the span of one lap. In the end, the tight circuit allowed little area to pass in the final lap, and the Wright Motorsport Porsche earned a third-straight podium finish, keeping the championship battle incredibly tight at the conclusion of the weekend.

Unofficially, Wright Motorsports is fifth in the 2021 team championship standings, just 207 points away from the leaders. With 350 points awarded for a race win and 35 for pole position, the pressure will only increase for the two remaining events.

VIRginia International Raceway will host the GTLM and GTD classes in the Michelin GT Challenge, October 8-9, and the season will close out at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta for Petit Le Mans, November 11-13. For more information, visit imsa.com.

    Driver Quotes | No. 16 Porsche 911 GT3 R

    Patrick Long
It was typical street racing: hard-nosed. We had a well-balanced car. I was fighting with the 14-car and I tried to square him up and get a run onto the back straightaway and unfortunately clipped the inside wall and lost a position. I gathered it back up and fought back to a podium position. I am happy to salvage that to go three in a row with podium finishes but we wanted to be a little further up the box. I am so proud of these Wright Motorsports guys. The pit stop was unbelievable. I am pretty confident that we had one of, if not the best, pit stop of the race. That is what got us into clean air and gave us a shot at the end. We will fight all the way to the final race.

    Trent Hindman
Everyone on the 1st Phorm Wright Motorsports team should be proud today. Qualifying was rough, rough to say the least. For the guys to be able to pull through with the job they did on pit lane and the speed of the car they put underneath us, they should be really proud. We are really pleased we were able to bring home a podium today and salvage a good result of what was, otherwise, looking like a tough weekend.

One Life, One Tequila is our CORE BELIEF. We’re building the only tequila brand you will ever need to drink. Una Vida is bigger than just tequila we’re also building a culture of people who want to live their life to their utmost potential.

Our story begins and continues to grow bottle by bottle. It’s a life mission for us to create a community of people who all raise a glass knowing they’re living their ONE LIFE! For more information, visit unavidatequila.com
