Moorespeed and Riley Dickinson Score Runner-Up Finish in IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on Saturday

Second-Place Finish Caps Tripleheader Weekend with a Victory and Two Runner-Up Results in No. 53 Moorespeed Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

BRASELTON, Georgia (October 17, 2020) – Moorespeed and driver Riley Dickinson earned their third IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama podium finish in two days Saturday morning with a second-place finish in the third and final 45-minute sprint race of the weekend at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

Dickinson started second in the No. 53 Moorespeed Porsche 911 GT3 Cup on a cool morning, quickly pulling away from the rest of the field and setting his aim on the leader. Dickinson kept the pressure up for the duration of the 45-minute timed race, going toe to toe for lap times, before finishing in second place.

“Riley matched pace for pace throughout the race and was right there the entire time,” Moorespeed President David Moore said. “We just couldn’t get to the lead. This wasn’t the result that we were hoping for, but we’re going to turn it around and come back again in just a few days at St. Pete to see if we can’t pick up some more wins.”

The Road Atlanta tripleheader event wraps up with a win Friday morning and two second-place finishes for Moorespeed and Dickinson at the 2.54-mile Georgia race track.

“It’s hard to look at just today,” Dickinson said. “You’ve got to look at the whole weekend. I feel like we did a lot of things right. It’s not a case of a weak link. I think coming out for St. Pete, we’ll have a strong performance and put it all together.”

Moorespeed now faces a quick turnaround, with a doubleheader on the streets of St. Petersburg beginning in just six days. The IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA race weekend begins on Friday, October 23, with practice on the 1.8-mile temporary downtown street circuit.

Moorespeed Returns to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta for IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup USA by Yokohama Triple-Header this Weekend

BRASELTON, Georgia (October 15, 2020) – Moorespeed returns to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta this weekend in the No. 53 Moorespeed Porsche 911 GT3 for the second-straight triple-header weekend schedule of races on the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup USA by Yokohama calendar.

Following Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course last month, Road Atlanta is the second of two consecutive race weekends on the 2020 IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup schedule that has Moorespeed and its competitors take on the challenge of three 45-minute sprint races in two days.

Friday’s Road Atlanta schedule includes twin IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup races at 8 a.m. and 1:55 p.m. EDT while Saturday’s weekend finale is slated to go green at 10 a.m. EDT. All three races can be seen live at www.IMSA.tv.

“We are looking forward to three races this week at Road Atlanta,” said Moorespeed President David Moore. “Looking forward to another big weekend with the team. We have got some work to do, but we are going to give it our best shot.”

The weekend’s opening pair of practice sessions are already in the books at Road Atlanta where Moorespeed and team driver Riley Dickinson topped Thursday afternoon’s second session with a top time of 1:22.963 (110.217 mph). Qualifying is next up at 5:15 p.m. EDT today.

The expanded triple-header race weekend schedules are just one of many changes and adjustments IMSA made to fit this year’s planned 16 IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup rounds into a compact four-month season – August through November – following the COVID-19 pause in the first half of the year.

This weekend’s IMSA event is open to race fans in compliance with mandated guidelines and safety protocols regarding COVID-19.

“Everybody is pumped up, in good spirits, and ready to go racing at one of our favorite tracks with fans there,” Moore said. “We want to put on a good show and let the chips fall where they fall. We are going to give it our best as we always do.”

  • Seven Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Teams Compete this Weekend across Two IMSA Racing Series at Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta

Seven Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Teams Compete this Weekend across Two IMSA Racing Series at Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta

BRASELTON, Georgia. For the second time in six weeks, Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing teams in two IMSA racing series compete at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Saturday’s 10-hour Petit Le Mans follows a Labor Day weekend six-hour IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race last month on the 2.54-mile road course, located North of Atlanta. The IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge series also returns this weekend for a Friday race.

The rapid Road Atlanta return is one of many 2020 schedule changes and adjustments, which IMSA has worked through following the motorsports industry-wide pause and subsequent adaptations for the COVID-19 pandemic. The Labor Day weekend races were replacement rounds of a canceled June event at Watkins Glen International in New York, while this weekend’s Motul Petit Le Mans – traditionally IMSA’s season-ending event – will be followed by two more races this year.

In the first Road Atlanta appearance, Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer teams have been tuning the Mercedes-AMG entries and secured top-five finishes in both series, led by a fourth-place GT Daytona (GTD) result in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship race by the No. 74 Riley Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 team.

Gar Robinson, Lawson Aschenbach, and Ben Keating co-drove the No. 74 to the fourth-place finish and return this weekend primed for an even better result in the 10-hour Petit Le Mans.

After starting 10th, the No. 74 team steadily moved up the running order, improving and fine-tuning the Mercedes-AMG GT3 throughout September’s six-hour race.

Aschenbach moved up to a race-high fourth place in the closing minutes but time ran out before he had a chance to make a move for the top podium position. He took the No. 74 under the checkered flag in fourth, just 4.576 seconds behind the GTD class winner.

A Grand Sport (GS) class-high six Mercedes-AMG GT4 entries compete this weekend in Friday’s two-hour IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge race.

The No. 4 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 of Russell Ward and co-driver Indy Dontje finished fifth in September’s Road Atlanta race, and is expected to be among the contenders again this weekend.

Dontje, with competition commitments in Europe, is being replaced as Ward’s co-driver in the No. 4 for the next two Michelin Pilot Challenge races by experienced Mercedes-AMG Motorsport driver Nico Bastian.

Ward and Bastian co-drive alongside their Winward Racing teammates Bryce Ward and Alec Udell in the sister No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4. Bryce Ward, Russell Ward’s father, joined Dontje for a third-place GS finish in the No. 57 at Road Atlanta in 2018.

Another two-car Mercedes-AMG GT4 entry comes from Murillo Racing. Co-drivers Jeff Mosing and Eric Foss battled for the victory in the No. 56 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 throughout September’s race. The No. 56 team and drivers led 39 laps only to run out of fuel on the last lap with Foss in second place.

The second Murillo entry is the No. 65 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 with the usual driving duo of Tim Probert and Mosing’s brother Brent Mosing.

The No. 35 Riley Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4 and team drivers Jim Cox and Dylan Murry return to Road Atlanta this weekend, looking to move into top contention following a September race that saw them and the Murillo No. 65 retire early after an incident. The No. 35 duo brings the momentum of a second-place finish from one race ago at Mid-Ohio.

The final Mercedes-AMG GT4 team competing at Road Atlanta is the returning entry of Anton Dias Perera and co-driver Dan Clarke. After competing only in January’s season-opening race in Daytona this year, Perera and Clarke are back with a new team and car number with the No. 10 LAP Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4.

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Petit Le Mans can be seen in live coverage this Saturday, October 17, on the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) in two segments. Live coverage of the start and majority of the race airs from 12:30 – 6:30 p.m. EDT with NBCSN returning for the finish and post-race coverage from 9:30 – 11 p.m. EDT.

Petit Le Mans coverage in the early evening hours from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. EDT is available on the NBC Sports App, NBCSports.com and TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold.

International viewers can watch live flag-to-flag coverage of Petit Le Mans at www.IMSA.tv.

A three-day event, Petit Le Mans begins today with practice for both the IMSA WeatherTech Championship and the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge. Thursday highlights include Petit Le Mans night practice from 7:30 – 9 p.m. EDT and Michelin Pilot Challenge GS qualifying at 6:35 p.m. EDT.

Friday’s schedule includes WeatherTech GTD qualifying at 12:30 p.m. EDT and the day’s featured two-hour IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge race at 3:35 p.m. EDT. International viewers can watch live flag-to-flag coverage of Pilot Challenge race at www.IMSA.tv.

Petit Le Mans race day Saturday starts with a 20-minute final warm-up session at 9:10 a.m. before the 10-hour race starts at 12:40 p.m. EDT.

Lawson Aschenbach, Driver – No. 74 Riley Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3: “I feel we made a great charge toward the end of the six-hour race and that momentum will continue for the Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Plus, we gained valuable information on the setup that will translate to this event. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 has great balance at this track and that, coupled with its ability to stay consistent over a long stint, will be very beneficial toward the end of the race. Road Atlanta always brings an element of surprise when it comes to racing on the same track as prototypes and GTLM machinery. Staying out of trouble is half the battle with this being a short and sometimes narrow track.”

Ben Keating, Driver – No. 74 Riley Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3: “I am absolutely optimistic we will pick up right where we left off at the end of the six-hour race. Riley Motorsports has been managing a Mercedes-AMG GT3 around Road Atlanta for the past four years. They know how to get it done. Even though we have a new AMG Evo for 2020, we raced here a month ago. So, I expect most teams to be ready to go too. This will be an even more competitive field than usual this year, but the No. 74 Mercedes-AMG GT3 will definitely be right there in the mix. Compared to the other endurance races, the 10-hour race at Road Atlanta is its own animal. Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta creates lots of challenges for both the drivers and for the guys on the pit box calling strategy. A full lap around is only about 81 seconds. For the driver, there aren’t any breaks in the action, and with four different classes on the track at the same time, it is one of the busiest races on the schedule for the driver. A double stint at this race is tougher than a triple stint at most tracks. And for the team, if anything goes wrong, it is so easy to go down a lap at Road Atlanta. The lap is so short that the strategy for when and how to do a pit stop almost always comes into play in a big way. It almost always creates a close finish.”

Dylan Murry, Driver – No. 35 Riley Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4: “This is going to be an exciting weekend. We proved our speed last time we were at Road Atlanta. The Balance of Performance (BoP) is a lot different this time with our car forced to carry more weight, and it is going to be very interesting to see what it does to us and the competition. I have my hopes high still. Our Mercedes-AMG GT4 will still be a very competitive machine, and we have proven it in the past. At this stage, there is really no point in conserving for a championship. While we still have to be mindful of our competitors and their efforts for the championship, we are solely focused on race wins now. We are going to give it our all these last three races to make a statement that just because we’re out of the championship lead it doesn’t mean we can’t still win or maybe even dominate a race.”

Nico Bastian, Driver – No. 4 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4: “I am looking forward to the weekend. It will be the first time I am racing in the U.S. I have been here on holiday in the past, but I have never really raced here. It was on my bucket list and finally I can make it. I am really looking forward to the track as well. I have only heard good things and have also seen some nice onboard clips already. I was part of the driver development team for the Mercedes-AMG GT4. I am driving the Mercedes-AMG GT3 mainly now, so I will have to adapt a bit again, but I know the GT4 car quite well. I met Russell in Asia a couple of years ago when we raced on the same team, but Winward Racing is new to me. I know one German engineer well, but all of the Americans have given me a warm and nice welcome. I feel like I am in the family already.”

TPC Racing Returns To Road Atlanta for IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Tripleheader

Efrin Castro Swept The Labor Day Weekend Doubleheader at the Same Track

BRASELTON, Georgia (October 15, 2020) – TPC Racing returns to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta this week for three races in the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama and the site of Efrin Castro’s Gold Cup class sweep just a few weeks back.

The tripleheader weekend gets underway at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning with two practice sessions on Thursday before qualifying at 5:15 p.m. ET. The championship will run 45-minute races at 8 a.m. and 1:55 p.m. on Friday, October 16, and 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, October 17. Each race is streamed live on IMSA.tv.

TPC Racing last visited the 12-turn, 2.54-mile circuit for a doubleheader on Labor Day weekend at the beginning of September. Castro battled his way to a pair of wins to close within striking distance of the championship leader. While an uphill battle still remains, another strong weekend could move the Dominican Republic-native and New Jersey resident back within striking distance as the season pulls into the home stretch.

Castro’s No. 65 Fine Fare Supermarkets Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in eight of nine races so far this season. Castro also turned the quickest lap of the race in both rounds of the previous Road Atlanta races.

“This season hasn’t been perfect for Efrin, but I’m most proud of the way he has continued to grow and improve each and every weekend,” Harris Levitas, Director of Race Operations, said. “Because of that improvement, he’s put himself in position to contend in every race. The results show that. We had a good weekend at Road Atlanta a few weeks ago, but we haven’t rested on that. The guys here at TPC Racing will give Efrin a car that he can compete in, he’ll do his part to get better once again, and with a little bit of luck that will add up to another great weekend.”

The tripleheader weekend began with an early morning Thursday morning, with Castro, TPC Racing and the entire field out at 8 a.m. for the opening practice of the weekend shared with IMSA’s Motul Petit LeMans race. Friday afternoon’s qualifying sets the grid for race one, with the race two grid set by either the fastest race lap or the second-quickest time from the qualifying session. The process repeats itself for race three, using either the third-quickest qualifying lap, or the fastest lap from race two – whichever is quicker.

Road Atlanta Preview: Jan Heylen Joins IMSA WeatherTech Lineup for Endurance Challenge

BATAVIA, Ohio (September 1, 2020) – The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship returns to endurance racing this Friday and Saturday for the Michelin Endurance Challenge Weekend at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. Running the first IMSA endurance event since January’s Rolex 24 At Daytona, Wright Motorsports will welcome Jan Heylen to the No. 16 Porsche 911 GT3 R’s driver lineup, joining full-time drivers Ryan Hardwick and Patrick Long.

“It’s great to have Jan back with us in GTD,” said Team Owner John Wright. “We’ve had some great races with him in years past, including a podium finish at the Rolex 24 At Daytona. He’ll be a strong addition to our full-time drivers, and with six hours of racing, we’re looking to have a well-executed run at Road Atlanta. We’ve barely put a wheel wrong all season, and this weekend, that kind of perfection can pay off in a big way during an endurance race.”

Heylen last raced in the GTD class with Wright Motorsports in the 2019 IMSA Encore at Sebring International Raceway, finishing second with Hardwick and Max Root. Heylen has had a successful run with Wright Motorsports, earning podium finishes at the Rolex 24 At Daytona and Petit Le Mans his last full-season IMSA season with the team in 2014. More recently, he raced with the team in the 2017 Pirelli World Challenge, and currently coaches in the team’s Porsche GT3 Cup USA efforts.

Wright Motorsports has contested an almost perfect performance in what has been an unusual season. The pair of Hardwick and Long have finished in the top five for four of the five races so far in a highly competitive GTD field. With almost half of the championship complete, Wright Motorsports sits fifth in the GTD team standings, just four points away from the top-three. The Ohio-based team has consistently out-performed other competitors in pit lane, a crucial key to success for the endurance races.

The TireRack.com Grand Prix At Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta is replacing the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen, one of the many schedule changes or cancellations resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. The 28-car field will take the green flag on Saturday, September 5th at 11:35AM ET, and race to the checker flag at 5:35PM ET. Each driver will need to complete no less than 90 minutes and no more than four hours in order for the team to score points.

The TireRack.com Grand Prix At Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta will air live on NBC Sports Network Saturday, September 5th from 11:30AM to 12:00PM, then continue from 2:30PM to 6:00PM. Subscribers to NBC Sports Gold TRACKPASS can stream the race live in its entirety, and also listen to IMSA Radio for comprehensive live coverage of the race and qualifying.

Porsche GT3 Cup USA by Yokohama
After a strong weekend at the VIRginia International Raceway double header, Charlie Luck and the No. 45 Porsche sit third in the Masters points championship, with four races complete and still 12 rounds remaining. Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta will host rounds five and six, each 45 minutes. Both races will air live on imsa.tv, Saturday, September 5th at 9:30AM ET and Sunday, September 6th at 8:00AM ET. The event will also air tape-delayed on September 16th at 5:00PM ET.

    Driver Quotes

    Ryan Hardwick
I am super excited about finally competing in an IMSA WeatherTech Championship race at my home track! I’ve lived and worked in the Atlanta area for most of my adult life, and it will feel great to finally race in a premier IMSA event here at Road Atlanta. I also think our Wright Motorsports team will continue to shine in these upcoming endurance races. These long races are more about how the entire team prepares and performs, and I don’t think there will be a more prepared team in the paddock this weekend. I’m also extremely pumped to welcome Jan Heylen on board as our third driver for the endurance races. Jan knows the Porsche inside and out, and he’s an incredibly fast and skilled driver. The addition of Jan gives us a very strong driver lineup for these long races, and I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together.

    Patrick Long
It’s been nearly two years since I have run in a race at Road Atlanta. I am hungry to get back there, as I feel it’s one of the most old school and challenging circuits in the world. My goal is to continue to build on our momentum from the last few IMSA rounds, and with six hours of racing, I feel this will help play into our strengths as an organization.

    Jan Heylen
It’s really nice to be back with the Wright Motorsports in GTD. I’m looking forward to driving with Ryan Hardwick again, after finishing second together at the Sebring Encore last year. It was a really good experience working with Ryan, and hopefully we can pick up where we left off. After being best friends with Patrick Long for almost 25 years, this will be my first time sharing the car with him, which is really exciting. We go so far back, it would be really nice to have a good race with him and the team. I’ve been with Wright for maybe seven years now, and it’ll be nice to be racing with the family back in GTD. There will be a steep learning curve, as we don’t have a ton of time in the car before the race. But I’ve got all my notes from the team, and hopefully I can do my job, execute well, and come away with good points for the team to put Patrick and Ryan in place to run for the championship.

    Charlie Luck
I’m super excited coming into Road Atlanta, one of my favorite racing tracks. It’s one of the first road racing tracks I ever did in the Busch NASCAR days in 1986. It reminded me so much of my days in motocross racing from ages 12 to 18. This is my fourth year coming to Road Atlanta, so I feel a lot of confidence around the track. We tested last Monday, which was a good and competitive test, and we feel like we have a god set up on the car. Coming off a good weekend at VIR, except for an accident on the restart, we had good consistent laps in second place for the entirety of both races. I feel really good about it, looking forward to it, and can’t wait.

Charlotte Motor Speedway and IMSA continue to work with state/local health officials surrounding options for access to the event for fans during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but no determinations have been made at this time.

  • IMSA WeatherTech 240 Preview – Daytona

IMSA WeatherTech 240 Preview – Daytona

After five long months, the IMSA (International Motorsports Association) WeatherTech Sports Car Series returns this Saturday night, competing at Daytona International Speedway road course for the WeatherTech 240.

It’s the first time in quite some time, IMSA will race in the summer at Daytona, and in a two hour and 40 minute sprint race which will be the norm as the season goes a long.

Overall, there are 26 entries on the entry list. Eight teams make up the WeatherTech DPI class, six in the GTLM class, with the GTD having the most entries at 12. Among the entry list, three new teams are set to get on track Saturday night at Daytona. Of those teams, the No. 76 Compass Racing McLaren team returns in its second season in the WeatherTech Sports Car Series, but the entry sees a new face on the grid. 32-year old, Corey Fergus is set to pilot the No. 76 entry. Fergus has experience in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge. Accompanying, Fergus will be his teammate, 26-year old Paul Holton.

The other newer entries are Gradient Racing and Team Hardpoint. In the Graident entry, drivers Marc Miller, Till Bechtolsheimer make up the driver grid for the team in the Acura NSX GT3 machine. As for Hardpoint, Rob Ferriol and Spencer Pumpelly are the co-drivers. Both Ferriol and Pumpelly will pilot the No. 30 Audi R8 LMS GT3 vehicle.

There are at least three different teams who have a very good track record. Those are the No. 10 Konica Minolta Cadillac DPi-V.R., BMW Team RLL, and Audi.

In the Cadillac stable, they were the most recent overall winner in the 2020 Rolex 24 hours of Daytona. The No. 10 entry also was the runner up at last seasons championship finale in the Motul Petit Le Mans, which has the team seeing early success by having two consecutive podiums. In the January event, the Cadillac team led the most laps by leading 493 of 833 laps.

Meanwhile, the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team has also found success at Daytona. In the GTLM class, RLL has earned three consecutive podiums with a two car team, while the No. 24 M8 GTE machine got the victory in the Rolex 24. This weekend, John Edwards and Jesse Krohn will share the No. 24 entry, as De Phillippi and Bruno Spengler manages the No. 25 BMW entry. Spengler was successful in the IMSA iRacing Series, while the series awaited return.

As for Audi, they are coming off two consecutive finishes on the podium in the GTD category at Daytona International Speedway. Drivers Mirko Bortolotti, Rolf Ineichen, Daniel Morad, Dries Vanthoor piloted the No. 88 WRT Speedstar Audi home to a third place outing in January. The only entry Audi sees for Saturday is the No. 30 of Ferriol and Pumpelly with Team Hardpoint.

It’s been at least 10 years or so, since Daytona has featured an IMSA summer race. Though, Porsche looks to continue their success, as they have the most victories of any manufacturer with five in four different classes. These victories have came in 2000 with GTU, GTS in 2002, SGS in 2004 and 2009, as well as their most recent summer victory in 2010 with the GT class. On Saturday, Porsche fields three cars with the usual No. 912 GT, No. 911 for GTLM, and the No. 16 Wright Motorsports team driven by Ryan Hardwick and Patrick Long for GTD.

Back in January, Nick Tandy qualified on the pole in the Porsche No. 911 RSR in GTLM, while Zacharie Robichon earned the pole in GTD.

As the news broke during the break, Porsche will withdraw from IMSA at the end of the 2020 season. Team drivers, Nick Tandy, Fred Makowiecki, Earl Bamber, and Laurens Vanthoor will do everything in their power to give the manufacturer something to remember for in their final season.

Following Porsche in the wins list category are BMW with four, Chevrolet seeing three wins, Ferrari and Mazda sharing two wins, and Lexus only having one win.

However, Mazda was the leading manufacturer at the two hour and 40 minute mark during the 2020 Rolex 24.

Surprisingly, the Corvette Racing team is still seeking its 100th victory in IMSA. The last time Corvette won a race was in the Grand Prix of Long Beach, which came last year as then drivers Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin picked up the victory. Corvette will have a solid chance Saturday, as Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor will get to compete in the No. 3 Corvette machine.

As these manufacturers have seen their fair share of success, we also cannot forget about the drivers.

A lot can change in a span of 10 years since the last Daytona summer race, but as that old saying goes, “the more things change, the more they stay same,” which rings true this weekend.

Drivers who last competed in the summer Daytona race are still around today and you actually might just be surprised. Those drivers are Andy Lally, Bill Auberlen, Antonio Garcia, Jordan Taylor, Ricky Taylor, Joao Barbosa, John Edwards, Jonathan Bomarito, Spencer Pumpelly, and John Potter.

Auberlen and Lally are the only drivers out of the group, who have won the summer race dating back to 2000. In fact, they are tied two a piece. Auberlen got to victory lane in 2002 and 2004, as Lally earned his victories in 2006 and 2010.

There will be many other strong competitors looking for victory in different classes, as the race begins Saturday night. One’s thing for sure, in a two hour and 40 minute event, you have very little time to make a mistake and rebound from it. Drivers will have to be on top of their game and with this race being shorter than usual, the short sprint could feature some very exciting action, which will make for a good race to watch.

IMSA drivers in all classes will get their first chance to get on track Friday night for first practice, slated for 6:15 p.m./ET. The second practice comes on Saturday morning at 10:15 a.m./ET lasting until 11:30 a.m./ET. GTLM and DPi times are 10:30 a.m./ET until 11:30 a.m./ET. The GTD class will get to practice from 10:45 a.m./ET to 11:15 a.m./ET, while the Silver and Bronze GTD class practices from 10:15 a.m./ET to 10:45 a.m./ET.

Qualifying rounds begin at 1:55 p.m./ET lasting until 2:10 p.m./ET. First up is the GTD class scheduled to go out at 1:55 p.m./ET, followed by GTLM from 2:20 p.m./ET to 2:35 p.m./ET, with the DPi class rolling out last at 2:45 p.m./ET. Qualifying can be seen live on imsa.com/tv.

The WeatherTech 240 green flag is schedued for 6:10 p.m./ET live on NBCSN and flag to flag on Trackpass subscription service. The event can also be heard on IMSA Radio. Fans can visit IMSA.com, RadioLeMans.com to listen. Additionally, Sirius XM will aloso have coverage of the race, slated to begin 6 p.m./ET on Sirius channel 216.

Wright Motorsports Resumes IMSA Championship at Daytona International Speedway

BATAVIA, Ohio, (July 1, 2020) – Wright Motorsports is finally back in action this weekend, racing in the Weathertech 240 at Daytona International Speedway, following a five-month pause in the calendar, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar championship rearranged the 2020 schedule, returning to Daytona, the only track the series has raced at so far this season.

“It’s a great feeling to be going back to racing,” said team owner John Wright. “Our guys have been working hard to get our entire operation back up and running, and we’re excited to be able to get back on track with our partners.”

The GTD team will return as a one-car operation in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, running the No. 16 1st Phorm Porsche 911 GT3 R with drivers Ryan Hardwick and Patrick Long.

“This upcoming race back at Daytona means a lot to me for a couple of reasons,” said Hardwick. Obviously it marks the return to racing that our fans and everyone in our industry have been looking forward to, but this race is also a significant milestone for me personally. One year ago, on the 4th of July weekend in 2019, I was involved in a big crash at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park which left me with a severe knee injury that took me out of racing for the remainder of that season.

This upcoming Fourth of July race weekend marks a full year from that incident. Over the past year, I’ve invested a tremendous amount of time putting in the work physically and mentally to get back to where I was a year ago, and to continue to improve as a racing driver. I simply can’t wait to be back in the race car! It’s been a long time coming for me.”

The team enters the second round of the season in fourth in the GTD class championship points, following an impressive top five-run in the season opening round, the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Instead of the normal three to five day event, the WeatherTech 24 at Daytona has been condensed to two days of on track action. The first practice will take place the evening of Friday, July 3, and the remaining practices, qualifying, and race happening on Saturday, July 4.

“It is great to get back to racing,” said Long. “It is ironic that it will be right back to where we ran last. I have a lot of good memories running at Daytona on the Fourth of July back in the GRAND AM days. The limited track time is always interesting. You have to come off the truck and be right there. I like that format for the future.

“I look forward to putting on a good show for the limited fans at the track and the ones watching on TV. I want to maintain the momentum. We started with a good run at the Rolex 24 and I’m keen to get back to working with Ryan. We have been training on the sim but eager to get back out there in the Wright Motorsports Porsche and get a podium on the board for our supporters at 1st Phorm, Mountain Motorsports, and Una Vida Tequila.

The latest supporting sponsor to join Wright Motorsports, Una Vida Tequila has recently joined the team, an additional sponsor hailing from the Midwest. Locally owned, the company was founded by people who want to live their “One Life” to the fullest, creating a positive community and high-quality tequila.

The WeatherTech 240 at Daytona will air live in the United States from 6:00PM to 9:00PM Eastern on NBC Sports Network. Thanks to Michelin’s limited offer, some fans will be able to watch the entire IMSA season for free without a cable subscription by clicking this link, and entering in the code MICHELINIMSA. International audiences can watch live on imsa.tv. For more information, visit imsa.com.

  • IMSA Releases Rest of 2020 Schedule

IMSA Releases Rest of 2020 Schedule

IMSA announced on Thursday afternoon a wide variety of schedule changes for the rest of the 2020 racing season.

As one date is already set for July 4, which will be a return to racing for the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Series at Daytona International Speedway, the following number of races for the series has been scheduled.

For majority of the schedule, Daytona on July 4, Sebring on July 18, Road America on August 2, VIRginia International Raceway, Lime Rock Park on Sept 12, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course Sept 27, and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca will see a two hour and 40 minute sprint race.

Keeping the traditional time of the races are Watkins Glen, which will still see six hours, Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta 10 hours, and Sebring International Raceway 12 hours.

With that in mind, the Six Hours of The Glen will now be held on Labor Day weekend, which will see all four classes in session. Those classes include a four hour Michelin Pilot Challenge event, two double headers for the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge and the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Series.

For the GT Le Mans and GT Daytona Series, those classes will be kept in the Northeast following that weekend, as they head to Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, which sees a timed event of two hours and 40 minutes. The Michelin Pilot Challenge Series will also compete that same weekend with just a two hour race, with the GT3 Cup Challenge USA class scheduled for a 45 minute race.

As the schedule rolls on through 2020, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca will be the host of the penultimate round in the series championship from Oct 30 through Nov 1. On that weekend, the Hyundai Monterey Sports Cars will have their championship held. Other classes scheduled to compete are Michelin Pilot Challenge and the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Series.

IMSA President, John Doonan, says these scenarios are what they had hoped for within the organization to complete the 2020 season.

“These revisions to our 2020 schedules put all of IMSA’s stakeholders in the best possible position for success,” said IMSA President John Doonan. “They are also the result of the ongoing spirit of collaboration with our promoter partners. Moving our Northeastern events into September should pay dividends from the standpoint of weather. WeatherTech Raceway on Halloween weekend also has the potential to be spectacular and will set the stage for a thrilling conclusion at Sebring.”

In addition, the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series returns to VIRingia National Raceway for the weekend of Aug 21-Aug 23. VIR takes the place of the originally planned event at St. Petersburg.

As for the IMSA Prototype Challenge class, their six race schedule will not see any revisions and are intended to remain the same. Despite that announcement, Road Atlanta the season finale, is now a three-hour event. The other events are scheduled to be one hour and 45 minutes.
