    DRIVER QUOTES:
JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 2 HITACHI TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET – QUALIFIED 3RD
“We had a good day on Saturday here in St. Pete. I feel really good about our car. I just got through qualifying. It’s pretty hot and definitely very humid outside, so it’s going to be a hard race to get through. But I felt really good in all sessions except for that Fast Six. In the Fast Six, I felt like it difficult to bring the tires up when they were used. I think that’s how we got beat. So, we’re starting third for the race tomorrow. It’s a good enough spot to win from, no doubt. I think we have a good race car across multiple stints that we can make something happen from that spot. I’m feeling really good and have good momentum and just need to keep carrying it all the way through until tomorrow night, and hopefully we’ve got a win underneath us.”

SIMON PAGENAUD, NO. 22 MENARDS/AUSTRALIAN GOLD TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 4TH: “We were P4 today at St. Pete with the Australian Gold Chevy car. It was fun qualifying. We found a lot of speed. We found a really great balance on the car all weekend. I’m very happy. I think we kept progressing every session and at the end there, it was great to be in the Fast Six and put out as much we could out of the race car. So, I’m satisfied with P4. Josef (Newgarden) is starting third so it’s going to be interesting at the start with him. And then obviously we’ve got to go to the front together. So, I’m very excited. I’m glad we brought the sunscreen. It seems to work.”

SEBASTIEN BOURDAIS, NO. 14 ROKIT AJ FOYT RACING CHEVROLET, QUALIFIED 5TH:
“Really good afternoon here at the Grand Prix of St. Pete in the No. 14 ROKIT AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet. Really happy we made it the Firestone Fast Six and will start fifth tomorrow. Definitely a big turn around from practice one and two. Hats off to the boys for figuring it out and giving me a really fast ride. Can hardly wait until the race tomorrow!”

PATO O’WARD, NO. 5 ARROW MCLAREN SP CHEVROLET, QUALIFIEED 6TH:
“We just got done with qualifying here in St. Petersburg. We are sixth, starting on the outside of the third row. We had a quick car in qualifying but we just didn’t make quite the right call on either using reds or new blacks. The track was very different to what we felt in Practice 2, but we have a quick race car. We are going to be thinking about it tonight, and we are going to go get it tomorrow.”

SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN, NO. 3 DEX IMAGING TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET – QUALIFIED 14TH
“Overall, it was a pretty disappointing day for me, I guess; coming back to St. Pete, a track that I know, after last year, you sort of want to try again for that Q2 bracket. Unfortunately, the car was feeling really good in practice and qualifying in the first segment there, especially on black tires. But we put the red tires on and I just didn’t get that little extra bit you need to really get into that t Top Six to advance to Group 2. It’s going to come with time. I’m feeling really comfortable and strong on the black tires and I think we were the fastest in that group there in one stage where everyone had the same tire. The red tires; just not enough laps right now. I haven’t got a great feel for it and confidence to really find the grip at times when you can only do it once or twice in a run. So, I’m a little bit disappointed. But, at the end of the day we start XX for a pretty long race tomorrow and hopefully we can make our way through with the pace that we have on the right compounds.”

WILL POWER, NO. 12 VERIZON 5G TEAM PENSKE CHEVROLET – QUALIFIED 20TH
“It was definitely not the qualifying session we were looking for. We just didn’t get the set-up quite right and the series is so tough now, if you’re not right on point, you’re certainly going to pay for it and then start back somewhere like 20th. So, it looks like a two-stop strategy. We are hoping there are some yellows, which will open the windows up and give us a chance to potentially jump some people. So, the aim for tomorrow will be a Top 10. We’ll try to get some points and get in that Top 10 and that would be good for us.”

  • Herta Hustles to NTT P1 Award in Dramatic St. Petersburg Qualifying

Herta Hustles to NTT P1 Award in Dramatic St. Petersburg Qualifying

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Saturday, April 24, 2021) – Colton Herta won the NTT P1 Award for pole position for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Saturday in a qualifying session that featured as much news for who didn’t make the Firestone Fast Six as for who did.

Herta took his first pole of the season and fifth of his NTT INDYCAR SERIES career with a best lap of 1 minute, .3210 of a second in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda. His previous best start at St. Petersburg was third last October, and his last pole came last September at Mid-Ohio.

“I knew we had a good race car for here and really good qualifying pace from last year,” Herta said. “We just had to get through those first two stages nice and clean. The Gainbridge car was so good today, and everybody did a phenomenal job all weekend up until this point. Really happy for the guys, and hope we have a great race tomorrow.”

This was the second pole at St. Petersburg for the Herta family. Colton’s father, Bryan, who calls race strategy on his radio for Andretti Autosport, earned the top spot for this event in 2005 while driving for the Andretti team.

Jack Harvey will join the younger Herta on the front row of the 100-lap race Sunday (noon ET, NBC and INDYCAR Radio Network) after a best lap of 1:00.5709 in the No. 60 AutoNation/Sirius XM Honda.

Two-time series champion Josef Newgarden will start third after a best lap of 1:00.6078 in the No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet. Newgarden led both practices and both qualifying rounds up to the Firestone Fast Six this weekend on the 14-turn, 1.8-mile temporary street circuit.

It will be an all-Team Penske second row, as 2016 series champion Simon Pagenaud will start fourth after a top lap of 1:00.6353 in the No. 22 Menards Australian Gold Team Penske Chevrolet.

St. Petersburg resident and two-time winner of this event Sebastien Bourdais continued the resurgence for AJ Foyt Racing this season by qualifying fifth at 1:01.0017 in the No. 14 ROKiT AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet.

Pato O’Ward, the NTT P1 Award winner last weekend at Barber Motorsports Park, will start sixth after a best lap of 1:01.0799 in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet. O’Ward was the only driver in the Firestone Fast Six to not use the more grippy Firestone alternate “red” tires, instead opting for the primary “black” tires that have less grip but more durability.

Six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Scott Dixon was eliminated in the second round and will start eighth in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. In a stunning development, nine-time St. Petersburg pole winner Will Power didn’t advance out of the first round and will start 20th in the No. 12 Verizon 5G Team Penske Chevrolet.

Dixon barely made it through to the second session after one of his best laps was nullified in the first session for causing a local yellow that affected another competitor, per INDYCAR’s rules. Dixon spun in Turn 8 earlier in the first session to trigger a local yellow, but he snuck into the second group by grabbing the final available spot on his last lap.

Power’s best lap of 1:01.1140 in the first session was only 10th best in the group and too slow to advance. He brushed the wall on his final flying lap, bending a toe link on his suspension, and spun on a short straightaway approaching the timing line, ending any chance of making the second round.

2014 series champion Power will start from his furthest position ever on this circuit. His previous St. Petersburg low was sixth in 2009.

Race Day will start Sunday with the 30-minute warm-up at 9:05 a.m. (ET), live on Peacock Premium. Live coverage of the 100-lap race starts at noon on NBC and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

  • Harvey Qualifies on Front Row for Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

Harvey Qualifies on Front Row for Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

Marks third career front row start for Harvey and Meyer Shank Racing

St. Petersburg, Fla. (24 April 2021) – With a strong record of pace and performance in St. Petersburg, Jack Harvey and Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) entered the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg race weekend with optimism. Qualifying on the front row for the third time in his INDYCAR career, Harvey once again demonstrated that he should be considered a top contender for Sunday’s 100 lap main event (12:00pm ET, NBC/SiriusXM Ch. 205).

Harvey made his St. Pete debut in 2018, broke into the Fast 12 for the first time during his 2019 run at the track, and was on the way to a top five finish in 2020 until he was taken out by a competitor reentering the track. Now coming back with four years of INDYCAR competition under his belt, Harvey is aiming to capture his first victory.

The first practice of the weekend got off to an unusually slow start for MSR, with Harvey clocking in the 15th fastest time on Friday. But hard work overnight by the crew put Harvey back in the top running order during practice two where he finished third fastest.

That momentum was translated into qualifying which saw Harvey make his eleventh appearance in the Firestone Fast Six. Harvey held the provisional pole with seconds to go, but ended the session with a second place starting position after posting a 1:00.570-second lap. The front row start marks the third career second place qualifying run from Harvey (Indianapolis Motor Speedway (2020), Road America (2020), St. Petersburg (2021)).

“There was a lot of work put in overnight and I trust everyone on the No. 60 crew, they’ve done a really great job all year,” said Harvey. “We felt confident coming into this weekend because of how it traditionally has gone for us in the past. The No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda was really looking strong. I’m really looking forward to sharing the front row with our pseudo teammate, Colton. I just want to have a good start to the race and then we will go from there.”

It is also a special weekend for MSR as its co-primary sponsor, AutoNation celebrates its 25th anniversary. Harvey celebrated AutoNation’s achievement with a new helmet design to give thanks to the Fort-Lauderdale based company. After qualifying on Saturday Harvey gifted the helmet to the AutoNation Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Experience Officer, Marc Cannon.

“It’s a good weekend to have a good weekend,” said Harvey. “I wanted to do something to say ‘thanks’ to everyone at AutoNation. They have done so much for me over the years, so it was the least that I could do to congratulate them on 25 years.”

“I’m really proud of Jack,” said Mike Shank. “He did an incredible job today and it was great to get a front row start on the weekend that we’re celebrating AutoNation’s 25th anniversary. We had a few tweaks to make after Friday practice, but once we got the car balanced out, Jack was untouchable. It of course would have been nice to get the pole, but starting on the front row is a great place to be and we’ll try to get it done tomorrow.”

Coverage of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will begin at 12:00pm ET on Sunday on NBC. IndyCar Radio will also have live coverage on SiriusXM Ch. 205.

  • Colton Herta secures first pole of 2021 at St. Pete

Colton Herta secures first pole of 2021 at St. Pete

After a disastrous start to the 2021 season at Barber Motorsports Park, Colton Herta qualified the No. 26 Andretti w/ Curb-Agajanian on the pole Saturday afternoon with a time of 1.00.3210 and 107.425 mph over another Andretti affiliate driver Jack Harvey. Herta was 0.2499 seconds ahead of Harvey to gain the Valencia, California native his fifth career NTT IndyCar Series pole.

“Yeah, it’s been going good so far,” Herta said. “We’ve shown strong pace all weekend. Haven’t been outside of the top four in any session. Really all the Andretti cars have been really strong for most of the weekend. So, yeah, happy to get the pole obviously. Happy to get it with Dan Towriss here with Gainbridge and happy to be part of Honda. It’s going to be an awesome race tomorrow, interesting, two-stop. I need to do more research on that tonight.”

By securing the pole position, Herta now shares the pole with his dad Bryan (Herta) who won the pole back in 2005.

Qualifying featured another wild session for the weekend. Originally, the session was slated to go green at 1:45 p.m./ET but was briefly delayed for five minutes for course repair due to the previous on-track action. As Round 1, segment 1 went green, there was an incident that involved the No. 28 of Ryan Hunter-Reay and the No. 9 of Scott Dixon. Dixon ended up spinning around in Turn 8, causing a local yellow. Dixon was handed a penalty but was still able to advance in qualifying. Advancing out of the first group were Alexander Rossi, Colton Herta, Pato O’Ward, Simon Pagenaud, Sebastien Bourdais, and Scott Dixon.

Group 2 of qualifying saw the most interesting action. Officials reviewed an incident between the No. 21 of Rinus VeeKay and the No. 4 of Dalton Kellett. Kellett’s day got worse as he was penalized again for causing a qualifying interference. This meant Kellett lost his two fastest laps and not advance into further sessions. Kellett was penalized earlier in the day for being late to the drivers weigh in and lost 10 minutes of practice time.

Meanwhile, a few other incidents occurred as well. Will Power and the No. 12 Team Penske Verizon machine ended up spinning around in the last corner of the last turn in the final remaining minutes of the first session. IndyCar officials reviewed the spin but determined no action necessary. This was the first time since July of 2019 at Toronto, where Power would not advance to a second segment and the first time in his IndyCar career that the Aussie did not make the fast six at St. Pete.

When the final round of qualifying went green for the Firestone Fast Six, the top spot changed hands multiple times with Jack Harvey challenging for pole position late in the session. However, the pole ultimately went to Herta who edged out Harvey and gave Andretti Autosport their 44th career NTT IndyCar Series pole.

Despite Harvey missing out on the top spot, the starting spot is Harvey’s best since Road America last summer where he started second.

“Yeah, really great day,” Harvey said about the qualifying effort. “I think we made some good changes overnight. We had a really good practice two. From what the guys said, we looked good on blacks, looked good on reds. Obviously didn’t quite have enough to challenge for pole. I thought we did there for a little bit, but then they said Colton had done a 3. At that point I knew we already peaked. I actually thought the 5 in Q3 was a really good time. Just kind of catching the tail end of Colton’s comments, I was actually surprised how close the Q3 time was to the best that anyone saw on new reds. It will be interesting overnight.”

A 30 minute warm-up session is scheduled for 9:05 a.m./ET live on Peacock with the Firestone Grand Prix at St. Pete green-flag scheduled for 12:42 p.m./ET live on NBC.

  • Josef Newgarden paces Friday’s lone practice session at St. Pete

Josef Newgarden paces Friday’s lone practice session at St. Pete

Just four days removed from his Lap 1 crash during the season opener at Barber Motorsports Park, Josef Newgarden and the No. 2 Team Penske machine went to the top of the charts in the first NTT IndyCar Series practice of the weekend. Newgarden put the No. 2 Team Penske Chevy first with a time of 1.00.8029 and 106.574 mph ahead of his Team Penske teammate Will Power.

“We definitely have an opportunity,” Newgarden said about pacing practice. “We’re here. We have a good chance with this crew all the time. I always feel confident every race. Yeah, it was a decent start for us. I think we need to be better in some areas. I also conversely think we improved in some other areas where we were weak last year. We’ve made improvements. We need to make probably a little bit more to try to stay on top, but we definitely got a shot.”

While Newgarden certainly started off the weekend on the right foot, he knows the race win isn’t a given as the Top 10 spots were separated by a second in one of the most competitive practice sessions IndyCar has seen in quite some time.

“No apprehension was observed,” Newgarden added about the competitive practice. “I think they’ve been pretty quick to get on it. I didn’t see anybody taking it easy. Typically tight in INDYCAR. It was no different today. I think the track was really high grip, honestly, more so than what I was expecting. That’s probably what brought the times tighter. Normally when it grips up, we get really close as far as the entire pack. Yeah, it’s going to be tough. You got to be on it. Can’t make even the littlest mistake. That can set you back pretty far.”

There were a few notables that occurred during the session. First, the start was delayed due to a timing/scoring issue which caused the clock to stop with 39 minutes remaining. Eventually, practice resumed and saw a couple of cars go off track, most notably the No. 14 of Sebastien Bourdais who went off track in the Turn 10 runoff area. Bourdais tried getting his A.J. Foyt Racing machine refired, but the car stalled out causing a red flag. He was given a five-minute time penalty for bringing out the red in the closing moments.

Will Power, Colton Herta, Alexander Rossi, Simon Pagenaud, Scott Dixon, Felix Rosenqvist, Scott McLaughlin, Pato O’Ward, and Graham Rahal rounded out the Top 10. Last week’s winner Alex Palou finished the session in 20th.

The NTT IndyCar Series will be back in action Saturday morning with the final practice session scheduled at 9:45 a.m./ET and qualifying scheduled for 1:45 p.m. ET, all live on Peacock with a subscription.

    NTT IndyCar Series News Conference:
    Josef Newgarden, Team Penske

THE MODERATOR: We are joined by Josef Newgarden as well. We’ll continue with questions.

    Q. Colton let us know the top 18 spots were covered by a second. You have a rookie on your team. Everybody is making a lot about the three rookies. How did you feel driving out there? Did you sense any apprehension of the rookies, given this is their first time in the concrete canyons?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: No apprehension was observed. I think they’ve been pretty quick to get on it.
That can set you back pretty far.

    Q. Team Penske was at the top of the charts. How do you feel about your shot at a three-peat?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: We definitely have an opportunity. We’re here. We have a good chance with this crew all the time. I always feel confident every race. Yeah, it was a decent start for us. I think we need to be better in some areas. I also conversely think we improved in some other areas where we were weak last year.
We’ve made improvements. We need to make probably a little bit more to try to stay on top, but we definitely got a shot.

    Q. Josef, both you and Colton were considered to be leading contenders, still are, for the championship. You both left Barber deep into the hole. How important is it for a rebound race this weekend here?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I’m not even thinking about it, to be honest, because it’s so early. As far as points go, it’s not ideal. Obviously in a perfect world we would have started off with much better points and ideally a win.
As far as the championship goes, I don’t know how we can look at that at the moment. We want to have a solid weekend. It was a shame we just didn’t even really get to be in the race. It’s more of a shame when you affect other people’s days, like Colton, I felt bad about that, amongst others.
Yeah, excited to get going. I think for us as a team and a unit, we want to get back on track and do our thing, get a race underneath us.
Yeah, championship-wise I think it’s way too early to start thinking about that.

    Q. The fact you have four races in a 15-day period, that’s pretty stout considering the doubleheader next week at Texas. How challenging is this period of races going to be? Four races in a 14-day period?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I would say that’s quite impactful. You add up all that, it’s going to be a big chunk for the championship. Coming out of May, we’ll definitely have a good picture in front of us.
It’s going to be very fast, like you said. We just need to stay focused throughout that. There’s not a lot of time to rest. Making sure we keep our guard up at all times and try to maximize this short window is going to be important, for sure.

    Q. I’m curious about the heat out there today.
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: It’s hot, very hot. It was kind of a wake-up call. I’m sweating. I’m soaked compared to Barber. Barber I wasn’t sweating all. It’s a very physical track there. Getting used to humidity again and higher temps is a definitely wake-up call, like I said.
It’s normal. We normally always show up to this first race and think, Oh, my gosh, how are we going to survive? Then we do. You end up being just fine.
It’s going to be hot. I think we need to hydrate, always critical. I noticed it right away when I got in. I was like, Goodness, here is the temperature again we’ve been missing this winter.

    Q. Is it warmer than November?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: It feels more humid, I would say. Like it just feels a little muggier. I think the outright temperature is similar. I’m more soaked so I’m going to guess it’s more humid.

    Q. It was said on the broadcast usually it takes 24 hours to get over a race like Barber. This one took 48. Tell us what it was like recovering from Barber? Does being fastest in opening practice in St. Pete on Friday ease the sting a little bit from last weekend?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I think the sting is just what it is. Going quick again this weekend right away, it doesn’t really do much for that. At the end of the day, the race is what is going to matter this weekend. That’s what we missed out on last week, which was the hardest pill to swallow.
I mean it was a gorgeous day. I remember the warmup. What a gorgeous day to go racing. I was so excited. That’s my favorite part of the weekend, is the race itself. It is not kind of building to it, it’s not the qualifying, it’s the race where it really matters.
It was just a big gut punch, to be honest with you, just to be out so quick. Wasn’t something I was really expecting.
Didn’t think it was something I was asking for. Sometimes I get myself into trouble because I’m aggressive. Normally when I do, I know I was asking for it. I say, Why did I do that? That was silly.
This one I couldn’t categorize as that. It was one of those things, a bad combination of a couple different factors. Next thing you know you’re in trouble. When it affects you, it’s not fun. When it affects you plus some others, it’s really not fun.
Yeah, it was just a gut punch. Took a little bit longer. Definitely 48 hours. But I’m ready to get going. We haven’t started our season yet. I want to get a race underneath us. I’m ready for Sunday.

    Q. On the Team Penske perspective, you got no data at Barber. Will was second, but that was a little bit strategy. He appeared to have pace. Did Penske get a good sense of where you are in race one or still to be determined here in race two?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I think we did. Obviously we kind of segment this stuff out. Barber, being a road course, is kind of one part of the equation. We feel a certain way globally about our road course car.
I think this weekend we’re trying to get an idea of where we’re at street course-wise. There’s going to be more street courses this year compared to last. We want to feel confident in that package. Obviously the ovals are a totally different thing.
We definitely silo these different types of events. For Barber, we know where we stack up road course-wise. I think we were pretty competitive. I was disappointed because I felt like we were going to have a really good car. I felt a little stronger than Will in the warmup. You don’t know how that was going to pan out. I think Will looked good certainly in that podium position, rightfully so. I think we’re okay in that space.
This weekend we got to kind of do the whole thing too where we’re at street course-wise. Yeah, road courses I would say we were probably most apprehensive about to understand have we made a step. I think we needed to make a step on road courses last year. I think we have made a step, it’s just a matter of if it’s enough for the season.

    Q. Josef, the incident last weekend, seemed like there was some weird social media criticism of the incident. How do you interpret that? Is it almost a compliment that you’ve made a mistake and there’s so much kind of negativity on social media, if that’s a compliment of how rare a mistake it for you in your career really?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Well, it certainly wasn’t a fun mistake. For me, you make an error, you fly off the track, it just affects you, it’s one thing. It’s a harder pill to swallow when it’s first lap right in front of a pack, then you just kind of take out a couple of guys that were innocent bystanders. That’s just not a fun one to have go down.
I don’t really remember the last time I’ve had a moment like that, to be honest with you. Yeah, I mean, it doesn’t bug me. I know it. No one’s got to tell me. I wish I could turn back the clock more than anybody, just take that back.
It is what it is. You got to kind of sit on it. For me, I stew on it for 24, 48 hours. This one was a little bit longer. Then I put it on the shelf and we’re back racing again. You have to focus on the next thing.
It’s okay. It happens. I don’t mind the criticism. I think it’s warranted. I made a mistake. It’s all right.

    Q. Josef, you’re very experienced in all of this obviously. For yourself, would you rather be less running, more running on a Friday, or move everything more to a jam-packed sort of Saturday?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Yeah, I prefer the old schedule. I would like a normal Friday. If you’re asking me selfishly, I like that. I prefer that. I think most of us on our team would prefer that, too. You kind of get into a rhythm a little bit better.
But I think for the show, too, look, I’m not the one dictating this, I think a lot of this is COVID-driven obviously. You got a lot of different elements in play with budgets and all that.
I think for people that show up to these events, a lot of times in INDYCAR we can be like a three-day show, especially where you go camping like Road America, Mid-Ohio. People show up for a long weekend, don’t mind the running on a Friday.
If you’re asking me as a driver, I definitely like the long weekends.

    Q. Looking at the lap times today, do you think we’re going to crack into the 59s during qualifying on reds and finally beat the time from I think it was Jordan King or something holds the lap record here? Do you think we can break into that?
    JOSEF NEWGARDEN: It’s possible.

    Q. Where on the track do the reds show the most difference in terms of offering you trimming time from the blacks? Is it turn 10 or the fast chicane round at the end or is it all the way around? Josef, is it different for a Penske driver?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: You’re picking up a little everywhere. Depends on the track, depends on the red. Sometimes we see a big separation, sometimes we don’t.
I think here you get a little bit everywhere. I noticed it in braking capacity. But it’s a little bit everywhere. You’re talking that final bit of braking, which for sure is probably the best part of it. That combined on exit, just overall traction, I think you get a little bit more longitudinally than laterally from the tire. That’s probably where I notice it the most.

    Q. Speedway is going to have fans at the Indianapolis 500. I want you both to talk about the importance of that, if you think that number is a good number of fans, how the Speedway can handle that, and if you both have been vaccinated?
JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I think the fan number, just having fans back at the track, is great. It’s critical at IMS that we have fans. The Indy 500 is not the same without fans. I’ve said that a couple times in some interviews. It was really important we ran the race last year. I think it was critical for what it stands for, but it’s not the same without people in the crowd.
135,000 people, that’s a lot of people still at the track. But it’s a big facility. Everyone knows you can jam a lot of people in there pretty comfortably. Even when it’s filled up, it’s still a big place. I think they can do a great job adhering to all the guidelines from the state.

If anything, I’m proud of the Speedway with how they’re contributing to Indiana and this solution in general. I think Roger has been front and center of figuring out how we can be a part of the solution. I think at the 500 we can represent that solution as well that we’re all working towards, trying to figure out how to get it done.

Yeah, to answer your question, I’m partly vaccinated. We got the first dose at the test set at IMS, then we are going to get the second dose after Texas.

THE MODERATOR: Thank you to Josef for joining us today. Good luck in qualifying tomorrow and in the race on Sunday.

  • Newgarden Rebounds To Lead Opening Practice at St. Petersburg

Newgarden Rebounds To Lead Opening Practice at St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Friday, April 23, 2021) – Like any great athlete after a tough performance, Josef Newgarden apparently has no mental memory and a lot of muscle memory.

Newgarden rebounded from crashing out on Lap 1 of the season-opening Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama presented by AmFirst last Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park by leading the opening practice Friday for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Two-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Newgarden posted a top lap of 1 minute, .8029 of a second in the No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet in a very competitive session with times bunched together up and down the time sheet. It comes as little surprise Newgarden rallied today, as he has title-winning mettle and knows speed on this 14-turn, 1.8-mile temporary street circuit as well as any driver in the field, with victories in 2019 and 2020.

“I’m not even thinking about it, to be honest, because it’s so early,” Newgarden said of his 23rd-place position in the standings after one race. “As far as points go, it’s not ideal. Obviously, in a perfect world we would have started off with much better points and ideally a win.

“We want to have a solid weekend. It was a shame we just didn’t even really get to be in the race (at Barber). It’s more of a shame when you affect other people’s days, like Colton (Herta), I felt bad about that, amongst others.”

2014 series champion Will Power completed a Team Penske sweep of the top two spots, slotting in second at 1:00.8102 in the No. 12 Verizon 5G Team Penske Chevrolet. Colton Herta, who also was collected in the Lap 1 crash at Barber, rallied to end up third today at 1:00.8348 in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda.

Herta’s teammate Alexander Rossi was fourth at 1:00.8653 in the No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS/AutoNation Honda. Team Penske ended up with three of the top five spots, as 2016 series champion Simon Pagenaud rounded out the top five at 1:00.8992 in the No. 22 Menards/Australian Gold Team Penske Chevrolet.

“We’ve got something this weekend,” Pagenaud said. “We really do.”

Just .0963 of a second separated the top five drivers under sunny skies and in temperatures in the low 80s. That ultra-competitive trend continued almost all the way to the bottom of the 24-car time sheet, as less than one second separated Newgarden from the 20th-quickest driver, Barber race winner Alex Palou in the No. 10 NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

“I think the track was really high grip, honestly, more so than what I was expecting,” Newgarden said. “That’s probably what brought the times tighter. Normally when it grips up, we get really close as far as the entire pack.

“Yeah, it’s going to be tough. You got to be on it. Can’t make even the littlest mistake. That can set you back pretty far.”

Scott McLaughlin was quickest of the heralded class of three series rookies this season, eighth at 1:01.0158 in the No. 3 DEX Imaging Team Penske Chevrolet.

There were no incidents during the session despite the tight confines of portions of the street circuit, lined on both sides by concrete walls. Two-time race winner Sebastien Bourdais and rookie Roman Grosjean both overshot corners with no contact while testing the limits, but both were able to continue.

Practice continues at 9:45 a.m. (ET) Saturday, with live coverage on Peacock Premium. Qualifying for the NTT P1 Award is scheduled to start at 1:45 p.m., with live coverage on Peacock Premium and same-day coverage at 10 p.m. on NBCSN.

Live coverage of the 100-lap race starts at noon Sunday on NBC and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

  • Five Things To Watch at Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

Five Things To Watch at Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

INDIANAPOLIS (Thursday, April 22, 2021) – The NTT INDYCAR SERIES is right back at it this weekend with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Sunday, April 25 on the action-packed streets of St. Petersburg, Florida.

The second race of the season comes on the heels of a thrilling season opener Sunday, April 18 at Barber Motorsports Park. With drivers on different fuel strategies, the race played out into a four-way duel among young stars seeking their first career NTT INDYCAR SERIES wins, Alex Palou and Pato O’Ward, and series veterans and champions Will Power and Scott Dixon. Palou earned that coveted first win in the No. 10 SEGI.TV Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, taking the checkered by just .4016 of a second over Power’s No. 12 Verizon 5G Team Penske Chevrolet.

Last season, Palou’s new teammate Dixon opened the year with three straight NTT INDYCAR SERIES wins. Can the Spaniard keep that trend going this weekend in St. Petersburg, or will the series see another first-time winner, such as O’Ward or newcomer Romain Grosjean? Or maybe a seasoned veteran such as Sebastien Bourdais, Josef Newgarden or Will Power will stand atop the podium at the 1.8-mile, 14-turn street circuit?

The action starts Friday with NTT INDYCAR SERIES practice 1 at 4:15 p.m. ET (live on Peacock). The series has another practice session at 9:45 a.m. ET Saturday (live on Peacock), followed by NTT P1 Award qualifying at 1:45 p.m. ET (live on Peacock, tape-delayed on NBCSN at 10 p.m. ET). Coverage of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg starts at noon ET Sunday, live on NBC and INDYCAR Radio Network. Here are five things to look for this weekend in St. Petersburg:
The Next Generation Is HereThe top six finishers in last week’s Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama presented by AmFirst were a mix of seasoned INDYCAR SERIES veterans and newcomers looking to steal the spotlight.

Wedged in between 2014 NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Will Power (second), six-time champion Scott Dixon (third) and four-time champ Sebastien Bourdais (fifth) – all age 40 or older – were Alex Palou, 24 (winner), Pato O’Ward, 21 (fourth), and Rinus VeeKay, 20 (sixth).

Palou and O’Ward dominated the race, combining to lead 81 of the 90 laps. Palou was out front for 56, O’Ward for 25. VeeKay rebounded from being collected in a big Lap 1 accident to score one of the best finishes of his career.

It’s all proof that the next generation of NTT INDYCAR SERIES athletes is here.

The real question is which of the many young stars of the series is next in line for their first career win, and does it happen again this weekend in St. Petersburg?
After Tough Start, Newgarden Looks for Three-PeatTwo-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Josef Newgarden had a weekend to forget at Barber, arguably his best track in the series. Newgarden started a Lap 1 melee in Turn 5 when he lost control of his No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet at the exit of the uphill corner.

It was a rare mistake by the three-time Barber Motorsports Park winner, but there’s no better place for Newgarden to rebound than at the track where he has won the last two races.

Newgarden won the 2019 and 2020 editions of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, the latter of which was the season finale last October and continued a five-year trend of drivers winning back-to-back in Florida: Juan Pablo Montoya won in 2015-16 and Bourdais won in 2017-18 before Newgarden began to reign supreme.

Regardless of if he extends his winning streak or hands the top spot on the podium to another athlete, Newgarden’s rise from 23rd in the points standings must start this weekend.
Power Plays Poles at WillWill Power is the greatest qualifier in modern INDYCAR history. His 62 career poles put him just five behind the all-time INDYCAR record of 67, set by the legendary Mario Andretti.

The tale of Power’s qualifying success can best be told through the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, where he has won nine of the last 11 poles, including for the last two races.

The only two drivers to score a pole in the last 11 years in St. Petersburg not named Will Power are Takuma Sato in 2014 and Robert Wickens in 2018. In total, Team Penske has won the pole position in 10 of the past 14 St. Petersburg races.

Power has scored at least one pole position in each season since 2009, including five last year. It’s a sure bet that the 2014 series champion will come close to catching Andretti’s record this season, and don’t be surprised if his pursuit starts during NTT P1 Award qualifying Saturday afternoon.
St. Pete Second in Season-Defining Three-Race StretchThe NTT INDYCAR SERIES is the most diverse racing series on the planet, with a schedule full of permanent road courses, street circuits and ovals that challenge drivers like no other championship.

The start of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES is representative of the season, with the first race coming last Sunday at the Barber Motorsports Park permanent road course, this weekend’s street circuit race in St. Petersburg and next weekend’s doubleheader oval event at Texas Motor Speedway, a 1.5-mile superspeedway.

Each type of track demands something different from these athletes, but after this three-week stretch and heading into the Month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, there will be some early indicators as to who might stand tall over the entire season.

This weekend will show who did their homework at offseason tests at the rough and bumpy Sebring International Raceway and who we can expect to shine on street courses this season.
Spot the Stars with Digital GuideLast week’s NTT INDYCAR SERIES season opener saw plenty of new sponsors enter the sport, such as SEGI.TV, Carvana, Code 3 Associates, ROKiT, Nurtec, Shield Cleansers and more, through colorful new liveries. It also saw the debut of other stunning liveries, such as Scott McLaughlin’s colorful No. 3 PPG Chevrolet, Felix Rosenqvist’s blue and orange No. 7 Vuse Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet and Conor Daly’s vibrant No. 20 U.S. Air Force Chevrolet.

More bold and beautiful liveries and sponsors will capture the eyes of race fans this weekend, as last week’s winner Palou debuts a soft blue No. 10 NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, McLaughlin sports a red-and-white DEX Imaging Team Penske Chevrolet and Simon Pagenaud hits the track in the No. 22 Australian Gold Team Penske Chevrolet. Graham Rahal will debut his 2021 United Rentals colors on his No. 15 Honda, while Alexander Rossi will race in his pink No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS/AutoNation livery.

Three-Time Indianapolis 500 Champion, Helio Castroneves Joins Meyer Shank Racing AutoNation and SiriusXM for 105th Running of the Indianapolis 500

Meyer Shank Racing, one of the fastest growing INDYCAR teams, announces primary sponsors for the 500, Long Beach, IMS Road Course and Portland

Pataskala, Ohio (22 April 2021) – Having built its NTT INDYCAR Series program in lockstep with team sponsors since debuting in the 2017 Indianapolis 500, Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) is looking forward to its first two-car attack at the great race in 2021.

The Ohio-based team is pleased to announce that AutoNation and SiriusXM have signed on as co-title sponsors on the No. 06 Honda-powered Dallara set to be piloted by three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves for the 105th Running of the Indianapolis 500.

AutoNation will also serve as primary sponsor on Castroneves’ No. 06 Indy Car for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach in September. SiriusXM will be the sole sponsor of Castroneves’ No. 06 Indy Car for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course race on August 14 and the Grand Prix of Portland on September 12.

The growth of the program reflects the continued commitment that AutoNation and SiriusXM have demonstrated with MSR since first joining the effort to support the team’s debut outing with driver Jack Harvey.

For three years, the two companies have combined for an unforgettable livery for Harvey that showcases the SiriusXM and AutoNation brands for race fans and also highlights AutoNation’s effort to support cancer research via the DRV PNK campaign.

Castroneves’ No. 06 Indy Car will carry AutoNation’s DRV PNK branding and signature pink color to raise awareness for AutoNation’s commitment to finding a cure for cancer, with the program having raised over $26 million to drive out cancer to date.

“We’re very excited to have AutoNation and SiriusXM join us on our second entry for the 500,” said Mike Shank. “Both AutoNation and SiriusXM have been an integral part in helping this team grow and we are so thankful that year-after-year, they continue to show their support. There is a lot of excitement about the Acura Grand Prix at Long Beach being the finale this year, and AutoNation is a great fit for that event as well, so we could not be more pleased to make this announcement.”

“MSR and SiriusXM have been great teammates, and continue to grow together,” said Marc Cannon, AutoNation Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Experience Officer. “We can’t wait to take our partnership to the next level with Helio and have him serve as a brand ambassador for our DRV PNK campaign.”

”We’re excited to be expanding on our relationship with the Meyer Shank Racing team in 2021,” said Richard Beatty, SiriusXM’s Chief Subscription Revenue Officer. “For the biggest race on the IndyCar calendar, SiriusXM will be showcased on two cars in the field – the No. 60 of Jack Harvey and the No. 06 of Helio Castroneves, a three-time Indy 500 winner. Our subscribers know the value of having SiriusXM along for the ride, and that’s true whether you’re going over 200 mph at Indianapolis Motor Speedway or on your everyday drives around town.”

SiriusXM’s sponsorship of the No. 06 Indy Car at the Indianapolis 500 will correspond with the company’s next free listening period. From May 26 through June 8, any non-subscriber in the United States can tune in to sample SiriusXM seamlessly, with no credit card required, on all inactive SiriusXM radios and on the SiriusXM app.

    APRIL 24-25

RACE 2 OF 2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES:

DETROIT (April 21, 2021) – Chevrolet drivers this weekend turn their attention from a flowing and fast road course to a tight and technical temporary street course for the 17th annual Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Competing on the divergent venues a week apart poses challenges for Chevrolet teams and distinct tests for the 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged, direct-injected V6 engine.

“The start of the 2021 NTT IndyCar Season is very unique mix of a permanent road course, a technical street course and a very fast mile-and-a-half banked oval,” Chevrolet INDYCAR program manager Rob Buckner said. “This diversity challenges Chevy engineers with our technical partners working with each of our Chevy powered teams to find the best combination to maximize handling and power. This weekend our Chevrolet teams and drivers head to the challenging Streets of St. Petersburg for the second race of the season.

“While Chevrolet didn’t leave Barber with the W, we had four different Chevy-powered organizations bring home a top-six finish. That result speaks highly to the level of hard-work that occurred during the off season. We take all the learnings from each race and continue to build toward accomplishing the goals we have set for the season.”

Eleven cars powered by Chevrolet’s efficient powerplant will seek to take the checkered flag in the 100-lap/180-mile race April 25.

Since returning to NTT INDYCAR SERIES engine manufacturer competition in 2012, Team Chevy drivers have won seven of the nine races on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary circuit that includes downtown streets and a runway of Albert Whitted Airport. Chevrolet drivers have also corralled 17 of the 27 podium finishes.

In that time covering 150 races, Chevrolet has amassed 89 victories and earned 100 poles.

Josef Newgarden, No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet, has won the past two races at St. Petersburg. Teammate Will Power, runner-up in the season opener last week at Barber Motorsports Park in the No. 12 Verizon 5G Team Penske Chevrolet, has scored two wins and earned nine pole starts including the past two years.

“I said to the guys, if we do this week in and week out – just solid races with no mistakes – I promise you we will absolutely have a great chance at winning the championship this year,” said Power, whose 62 career poles are second Mario Andretti’s 67 on the all-time list. “I’m determined to have a good day at St. Petersburg.”

Sebastien Bourdais, who gained 11 positions relative to his starting spot to finish fifth at Barber in the No. 14 ROKiT AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet, is also a two-time winner of the event. Last October, in the event that was rescheduled because of COVID-19 to be the season finale, the St. Petersburg resident scored a fourth-place finish in the AJ Foyt Racing Chevy.

“I’m really excited for Round 2 of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES at St. Petersburg at home. It’s a great track and I have some really good memories, so hopefully we can make some more,” Bourdais said.

NBC will telecast the race live at noon ET April 25. The race will also be broadcast live on INDYCAR Radio Network affiliates, Sirius 211, XM 205, Indycar.com, and on the INDYCAR Mobile app powered by NTT DATA. Practice, live qualifications and the race day warm-up will stream on Peacock Premium.
