Palou Paces Practice, Continues Command Performance at Road America

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Friday, June 7, 2024) – No NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver has ruled Road America recently like Alex Palou, and that mastery continued Friday when he led the opening practice for the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America presented by AMR.

Two-time and reigning NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Palou was quickest with a lap of 1 minute, 43.1709 seconds in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. The Spaniard won on this 14-turn, 4.014-mile road course en route to his season championships in 2021 and 2023.

“It’s a really great start so far,” Palou said. “It doesn’t mean anything; it just means that the car is really good, easy to drive. It’s great to be back here. A proper track for INDYCAR. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

NTT P1 Award qualifying is scheduled for 3:25 p.m. ET Saturday, preceded by practice at 11:10 a.m. (both sessions live on Peacock, INDYCAR Radio Network). Live coverage of the race will start at 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday on NBC and Peacock and 3 p.m. on the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Colton Herta was second at 1:43.2506 in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda fielded by Andretti Global with Curb-Agajanian, followed by Santino Ferrucci at 1:43.3618 in the No. 14 AJ FOYT RACING/SEXTON PROPERTIES Chevrolet of AJ Foyt Racing.

Two-time and reigning Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden rebounded from a 26th-place finish last Sunday at Detroit to end up fourth in this 75-minute session at 1:43.3812 in the No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet. Christian Lundgaard rounded out the top five at 1:43.3984 in the No. 45 Hy-Vee Honda fielded by Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Championship leader Scott Dixon, winner last Sunday at Detroit, was sixth at 1:43.5340 in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Luca Ghiotto was the quickest of the six rookies in the 27-driver field, 17th at 1:44.1009 in the No. 51 GAV Air Technology Honda of Dale Coyne Racing. INDY NXT by Firestone championship contender Nolan Siegel, named earlier today to substitute for Agustin Canapino at this race, was 26th at 1:45.1027 in the No. 78 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet.

Less than a second separated the top 17 drivers in the field on the fast, flowing, picturesque circuit, the longest on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES calendar.

Many drivers found the grass and gravel outside of Turn 14, a right-hander leading to the long hill up the front straightaway. Romain Grosjean made contact with the tire barrier adjacent to that turn in his No. 77 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet, triggering a red flag 19 minutes into the session. He was unhurt.

  • Foster Leads Road America Practice To Continue Momentum

Foster Leads Road America Practice To Continue Momentum

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Friday, June 7, 2024) – The Louis Foster train keeps rolling.

Foster, who has won the last two INDY NXT by Firestone races, led the first practice for the Grand Prix at Road America on Friday with a top lap of 1 minute, 51.9070 seconds in the No. 26 Copart/Novara Technologies car fielded by Andretti Global.

“The car was good,” Foster said. “We struggled here a bit last year, especially with front (tire) deg (wear). So, it’s nice to start on the right foot. Made some good changes during that session.

“We’ve still got to do it tomorrow, haven’t we? It’s only practice, so let’s not get too excited.”

Qualifying is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET Saturday, preceded by a practice session at 10 a.m. ET, with both sessions on INDYCAR LIVE and the INDYCAR Radio Network. Live coverage of the 20-lap race on the 14-turn, 4.014-mile permanent road circuit starts at 1:05 p.m. ET Sunday on Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Englishman Foster will try to become the first driver in the INDYCAR development series to win three consecutive races since Linus Lundqvist in his championship season in 2022. Second-year INDY NXT driver Foster is second in the standings, 25 points behind leader Jacob Abel.

Rookie Caio Collet also continued his strong recent form by ending up second in the 45-minute session at 1:52.1101 in the No. 18 HMD Motorsports entry. Collet has finished on the podium in each of the last two races.

Championship leader Abel was third at 1:52.4096 in the No. 51 Abel Construction machine fielded by Abel Motorsports, followed by James Roe at 1:52.5488 in the No. 29 Topcon car of Andretti Global.

Rookie Bryce Aron rounded out the top five at 1:52.8317 in the No. 27 Jaguar Land Rover Chesterfield car fielded by Andretti Global.

One incident triggered a red flag. Wisconsin native Yuven Sundaramoorthy hit the tire barrier in Turn 12 about 10 minutes into the session. He was unhurt.

VandeWettering was promoted to his current role in 2023 and continues to serve as the program’s director of basketball operations, a position he has held since returning to his alma mater in 2017.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, VandeWettering also will participate in the honorary role as part of INDYCAR’s Pride Month celebrations and in recognition of the importance of ongoing efforts to create a more welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in the sporting world. VandeWettering also will meet two-time and reigning NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Alex Palou, whose No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda features a Pride Month-themed livery.

A 2015 graduate of the University of Wisconsin, VandeWettering served a one-year stint as the assistant director of basketball and football operations at the Big Ten. VandeWettering assisted with logistics for the 2016 Big Ten Football Championship Game, both the 2017 Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments and the 2017 Big Ten Softball Tournament.

The 2023-24 season was VandeWettering’s 11th campaign overall working with the Wisconsin men’s basketball program. He spent two years serving as the team’s program assistant, including the 2014-15 season during which the Badgers reached the 2015 national championship game.

Before taking over the program assistant duties, VandeWettering served as a student-manager for UW and took on the role of head manager in 2013-14 during Wisconsin’s Final Four run.

VandeWettering will join a long list of celebrated INDYCAR Fastest Seat in Sports passengers as he leads the field to green in a custom INDYCAR SERIES car with a special back passenger seat. This high-speed, high-octane, super-charged thrill ride already has been taken by Jon Bon Jovi, actors Judge Reinhold and Dylan Sprouse, and country music star Riley Green during the 2024 INDYCAR season.

Live coverage of the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America presented by AMR starts at 3:30 p.m. ET Sunday, June 9 on NBC, Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES represents the ultimate challenge in racing, with drivers competing at speeds of 200+ mph across a demanding set of ovals and road and street courses. The full schedule can be viewed here.

Set to race the No. 66 AutoNation / Arctic Wolf Honda for remainder of INDYCAR Season

Pataskala, Ohio (7 June 2024) – David Malukas will race in the Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) No. 66 AutoNation / Arctic Wolf Honda for for the remainder of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season starting with the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey on June 23. “This whole process has been extremely difficult on myself and (team co-owner) Jim Meyer,” said Mike Shank. “There were so many things for us to consider as we need to do everything we can to make up ground in the championship and Leader Circle standings. We are pleased to have David (Malukas) join us as he has both experience and potential and we are looking forward to having him start with us in Milwaukee for the test and then go racing with him at Laguna.”

Malukas had his 2024 plans change following a pre-season training injury, and the young American-Lithuanian racer is eager to open the next chapter in his INDYCAR career with MSR.

“I am extremely grateful to Jim Meyer, Mike Shank and the entire Meyer Shank Racing team for the opportunity to finish out the 2024 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season,” said Malukas. “Despite setbacks earlier this year, I have been diligently focusing on my recovery, putting in the necessary effort and dedication to get back to peak condition. I am ready and excited to be back in the car, aiming to make the most of this chance and deliver strong performances for the team and our supporters. This opportunity means a great deal to me, and I am determined to repay the faith shown in me with my best efforts on the track.”

Meyer Shank Racing thanks Tom Blomqvist for his efforts through the first six INDYCAR events and the Brit remains a part of the MSR family.

Meyer Shank Racing heads to Road America this weekend with Felix Rosenqvist (No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda) currently ninth in the championship points standings. Castroneves will sub one again in the No. 66 AutoNation / Arctic Wolf Honda for the Road America weekend.

TEAM CHEVY RACES TO ROAD AMERICA FOR THE XPEL GRAND PRIX AT ROAD AMERICA

DETROIT (June 6, 2024) – Heading north to the Wisconsin countryside for the seventh round of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season, Team Chevy looks to the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America to build on their year so far.

Since 2016, Chevrolet has captured a win on the legendary four-mile, 14-turn road course three times, as well as the NTT P1 Pole Award six times. With 13 podiums and leading 293 laps, the Bowtie brand looks to add to the three wins captured so far in six races of 2024 and 114 overall in the 2.2-liter twin-turbo V6 era since 2012.

“The Chevrolet INDYCAR teams are heading into the final leg of an intensive run of races. From the Indianapolis Road Course, to the Indy 500 on the famed oval, to the Streets of Detroit, and now the longest and fastest natural road course we run – Road America. Each presents its own unique set of circumstances for the Chevrolet engineers and our teams, said Rob Buckner, Chevrolet INDYCAR Program Manager. “The track requires optimum engine performance to obtain the speed needed around the four-plus mile course while maintaining the necessary handling needed through the 14 turns. The Wisconsin weather can always add another consideration in the preparation. We are prepared for the challenge and ready for the weekend.”

The 55-lap, 220.55-mile XPEL Grand Prix at Road America kicks off with the first practice on Friday, June 7 at 4 p.m. ET. Saturday sees the second practice at 11:10 a.m. ET and qualifying and the Firestone Fast Six at 3:25 p.m. ET. Race day starts with a warm-up at 12:15 p.m. ET, and the race takes the green flag at 3:30 p.m. ET on NBC. All practice and qualifying sessions are broadcast with Peacock, INDYCAR Radio, and SiriusXM Channel 218.

    WHAT THEY’RE SAYING (Quotes):

Santino Ferrucci, No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet:

“We had a really good attempt last year (at Road America). We didn’t have a great race, but I’ve had fantastic races there in the past. Also, just the track’s layout, it’s one of my favorite road courses. It’s just a lot of fun. It’s a great track. It’s got a lot of high-speed corners, very flow-ey. It’s one of the few tracks that we go to that I think has a little bit of everything. And it also races really well. So I’m a big fan of that.”

“I think if we just have a clean weekend, kind of like we did in Detroit. We actually had a pretty clean weekend there, we didn’t have any issues. We got all our running in and it was rather successful. I think if we do the same thing in Road America we can fight for a top 10 and hopefully a top five.”

Sting Ray Robb, No. 41 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet:

“We have had really good pace at the last two events and I don’t see that changing for Road America. There’s a lot to love about the track as well. Great passing opportunities and a great circuit make for good racing. It is one of my favorite races on the calendar. The weather is usually amazing and the facility is beautiful.”

“It is a very long track so it is difficult to string a full lap together at times without making a mistake. This allows consistency from lap to lap I feel like, but to get ultimate lap pace over the course of one lap is difficult.”

Pato O’Ward, No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“Since this track was repaved, Road America has become one of my absolute favorite tracks. It’s a track that’s able to show everything that an NTT INDYCAR SERIES car is capable of, and the racing always seems to be great here. I can’t wait to get up there with our Arrow McLaren Chevrolet team.”

Théo Pourchaire, No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“I can’t wait to race at Road America. It looks like an amazing high-speed track with with a lot of straight line and hard-braking zones. It’s a lot different compared to Detroit, where I thought we had a good weekend. We were almost advanced to the Firestone Fast Six and we fought hard in the race. If we keep pushing like this, I’m sure we’ll get better and better results. I’m focused on this weekend and I can’t wait to give my best for the onsemi Arrow McLaren Chevy team.”

Alexander Rossi, No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“I’m pretty pumped to be heading to one of my favorite tracks on the calendar to finish off this triple-header stretch. The team has been doing an amazing job lately and I hope I can reward all of the hard work with some trophies this weekend.”

Gavin Ward, Team Principal at Arrow McLaren:

“We roll into this weekend’s race at Road America with some positive momentum after a couple weekends where we executed well across all our cars. Putting together consistent, clean results is how you compete for championships, and with both Pato (O’Ward) and Alexander (Rossi) in the top five in the standings, we enter the summer with a bit of ground to make up but in the fight. Théo (Pourcharie) showed great pace and daring racecraft in Detroit as he continues to quickly get to grips with NTT INDYCAR SERIES racing. We’ve generally had great pace at Road America, and that iconic track and awesome fan base makes this weekend a highlight of the year.”

Christian Rasmussen, No. 20 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet:

“I’m excited about the progression we’ve made every weekend. I am ready to carry that into Road America where hopefully we can catch a break and have a good result!”

Rinus VeeKay, No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet:

“Road America, my favorite track! It is also the home of Direct Supply, which I am very proud to have on my car! It should be a good weekend; we were strong last year and I have a lot of trust in our road course package. I have always loved Road America, it’s so much fun to drive and has such great racing. I would love to make it back to the podium, especially at my favorite track!”

  • ABEL Motorsports trio back in action at Road America

ABEL Motorsports trio back in action at Road America

    • Jacob Abel holds a 25-point INDY NXT by Firestone championship lead heading into the second of two successive race weekends
    • Yuven Sundaramoorthy (Wisconsin) and Jordan Missig (Illinois) both consider Road America their home track

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (5 June 2024) – ABEL Motorsports heads to this weekend’s INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix of Road America with plenty of storylines, and a driver trio that includes the points leader (Jacob Abel) and two local drivers (Yuven Sundaramoorthy and Jordan Missig).

All three drivers have a great deal of experience on the historic 4.048-mile road course termed “America’s National Park of Speed” through their junior formula careers and, in Missig’s case, his sports car career as well.

Born in Oconomowoc, Wis., Sundaramoorthy figures that between June Sprints, F1600 Championship races, and the USF Pro Championships, he has raced at Road America 20 times. His family moved to China for his father’s work when he was three years old, then moved near Albany, NY when he was 10, but Wisconsin remained a mythical figure in his life.

“Growing up, I would always say that I was from Wisconsin. My parents always bought me Badger stuff growing up because I was into the Wisconsin sports. It’s always been a faint memory in the back of my mind, and I knew I wanted to go to college there.”

Graduating from the University of Wisconsin at Madison last year with a degree in computer science, Sundaramoorthy came away from school with much more than just a degree – his time in Formula SAE gave him practice, real-world knowledge that he puts to use as a race car driver.

Sundaramoorthy will drive the Formula SAE electric vehicle he helped build while studying computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The student team will compete for the electric vehicle championship title at Michigan International Speedway, against as many as 119 university-based teams from all over the world.

“Working with the Formula SAE team gave me so much valuable experience, including ways to use my computer science knowledge with a connection to racing. Through the FSAE team, I got to understand more of the intricacies of a race car, more of the physics side of the car, which has given me more of an understanding of the details behind the car – instead of just being the driver.”

With such a short turnaround between Detroit and Road America, the ABEL team was grateful to come away from last weekend’s street fight with very little damage and for Abel, still holding the points lead. With two podiums and four top fives in six junior formula races at Road America (including last year’s INDY NXT second place finish), Abel considers the scenic road course to be one of his best. It’s also the very first racetrack he visited.

“I feel as though last year’s race was a win that got away from us,” said Abel. “We got unlucky in qualifying and started back in the field but drove up to second. It’s one of our best tracks so I’m looking forward to it. It’s also one of my best memories – it’s the very first track I attended. I was in fourth or fifth grade and my grandfather took me out of school to go see my dad in the vintage races there. I’ve been going there at least 15 years so it holds a very special place in my heart.

“Last year was a crucial year at Road America, because of the new surface,” continued Abel. “We were all still learning the Firestone tires last year and they adapted to that new surface well, so it’s a high-speed, high grip track now. You just have to have confidence out there and as a third-year driver in the series, I’m confident with the car and tire at Road America.”

Missig, from Joliet, Ill. returns to the team for what he considers to be his home race.

“This track has meant a lot to me over the years – it’s given me a lot of wins and a lot of great finishes so I’m hoping to deliver more of that kind of results this weekend,” said Missig, who earned two Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series victories at Road America in 2021, on his way to a third-place finish in the championship. “But this weekend is also special because most of the crew from Autobahn Country Club is coming up to support me, including executives and members. It will be fun to be racing in front of the hometown fans and people who are important to me, on the biggest stage that I’ve been on.”

ABEL Motorsports thanks partners ABEL Construction Company, Advance Ready Mix, Boyd Cat®, S Team Motorsports and OMP for their continued support.

The INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix at Road America takes the green flag Sunday at 1:05 p.m. ET. The race will be streamed live in the U.S. on Peacock, while international viewers can watch via INDYCARLIVE, with INDYCAR Radio available at indycar.com and on Sirius XM.

About ABEL Motorsports: Team principal Bill Abel began racing motocross in 1972, earning numerous championship titles as he continued the family racing tradition. Meyer Shank Racing To Wrap Three-Race INDYCAR Stretch With Trip to Road America

Pataskala, Ohio (2 June 2024) – Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) bounced back in Detroit after a tough Indianapolis 500 run, as Felix Rosenqvist (No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda) rebounded from a troublesome Detroit qualifying that left him 22nd on the grid to finish a hard-fought eighth, gaining 14 positions over 100 laps.

Now as the 2024 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season nears the halfway point, MSR will look to continue moving up the standings at a classic American road circuit as the series heads to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin and the annual date at the fabled Road America circuit.

Sunday’s XPEL Grand Prix at Road America takes place at the 4.048-mile Road America circuit that winds through Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine region and features elevation changes, a mix of high- and lower-speed corners and some of the most intriguing passing opportunities on the IndyCar calendar.

Helio Castroneves (No. 66 AutoNation / Arctic Wolf Honda) will be back behind the wheel of the No. 66 AutoNation / Arctic Wolf Honda, after making his first road-course start of the year a week ago in Detroit. The veteran has eight INDYCAR starts at Road America but has brought his mounts home in the top 10 in four of those starts. He started from pole at Road America in 2017, finishing third after leading 17 laps.

MSR has had strong qualifying efforts at Elkhart Lake, earning top-three starting positions with Jack Harvey in 2020 and 2021 and had a top-10 session result with Simon Pagenaud in ’22, but the Ohio-based squad has yet to earn a top-10 finish at Road America in its previous eight starts.

Rosenqvist will look to break that streak as the Swedish veteran has three top-10 race results in his five previous starts, including a 2020 victory that saw him come from seventh on the starting grid to take the win. He is currently in ninth place in the series standings, just is just 10 points behind fifth.

This weekend’s XPEL Grand Prix at Road America will wrap up a march of three races in three weeks for MSR. Teams will qualify Saturday at 3:25 p.m., with Sunday’s 55-lap race starting at 3:30pm ET. The race will be broadcast live on NBC and Peacock. SiriusXM will also host live INDYCAR Radio coverage on XM Ch. 218.

    Meyer Shank Racing Driver Quotes:

Felix Rosenqvist: “I’m super excited to get back to a smooth road course after a bumpy weekend in Detroit. Road America has been kind to me and we have a lot of things to be excited for going into the second half of the season. It’s been a few years since I got a win at Road America and with the moment that myself and MSR have had so far this season, I don’t see why we can’t aim for the same this weekend.”

Helio Castroneves: “I’m excited to get back in the drivers seat at Road America which is such a great track and one that I have enjoyed racing on. We unfortunately did not have the weekend we would have liked to have had in Detroit, so we’re looking to get back on our feet at Road America and have a solid weekend.”

  • 1963 Indianapolis 500 Winner Jones Dies at 90

1963 Indianapolis 500 Winner Jones Dies at 90

INDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, June 4, 2024) – Parnelli Jones, the 1963 Indianapolis 500 winner and the first driver to qualify for the “500” faster than 150 mph, passed away peacefully with his family by his side June 4 in Torrance, California. He was 90.

One of the most versatile drivers in history, Jones was so highly rated by all his competitors, including several of the best from Europe. He only competed in the Indianapolis 500 seven times yet led in all but two of them for a total of 492 laps, still the eighth-highest laps led total in the race’s history. And in the only two starts he didn’t lead – 1965 and 1966 – he ran many laps in second place, finishing in that position in 1965 and retiring from there with mechanical trouble in 1966.

Jones, who was born Rufus Parnell Jones on Aug. 12, 1933, in Texarkana, Arkansas, is the only person ever to have led the Indianapolis 500 for 400 or more miles on two occasions. The first came when he won in 1963 and the second when his Andy Granatelli-entered, STP turbine-powered car failed after leading 171 of the first 196 laps in 1967.

Winner of the pole position with track-record qualifying speeds faster than 150 mph in 1962 and 1963, Jones never started lower than sixth in any of his seven “500s.”

Even after retiring from INDYCAR SERIES competition as a driver, somewhat prematurely in 1968 at the age of only 34, the street-smart Jones continued to be a winner. He fielded a team with a longtime business partner Vel Miletich that won the “500” in 1970 and 1971 with a pair of PJ Colt chassis, built in-house under the direction of chief mechanic George Bignotti and driven by Al Unser. This combination also won the United States Auto Club National Championship in 1970 followed by a second and third straight title in 1971 and 1972 with former motorcycle racing standout Joe Leonard behind the wheel.

Vel’s Parnelli Jones Racing even briefly ventured into Formula One. They fielded Mario Andretti in the 1974 season-closing Canadian and United States rounds, followed by the entire Grand Prix circuit in 1975, and all the races up through the Long Beach, California, round in spring 1976, at which point lack of sufficient sponsorship brought the campaign to an end.

During this same period, the team also fielded Andretti and Unser in the Sports Car Club of America’s Formula 5000 road racing series and the USAC Dirt Car (later Silver Crown) series on 1-mile dirt ovals, the two drivers consistently recording top-three finishes in each of these widely contrasting forms of motorsport.

Jones was named after a local judge, Rufus Parnell, whom his mother respected. The family moved from Arkansas to Fallbrook, California, when Jones was 2 and then to Torrance, California, when Jones was 7.

At age 17, while racing old cars in Gardena, California, Jones needed an alias to prevent race officials from learning he wasn’t the minimum legal age of 18 to compete.

Jones’ school friend, Billy Calder, came up with an idea to solve the problem. There was a girl in their school named Nellie, and Calder used to tease Jones about her liking him. Calder knew Jones’ middle name was Parnell, and he would joke around with him, calling him “Parnellie.” Calder painted the name “Parnellie” on the jalopy door, and the rest is racing history, with the “e” dropped somewhere along the way.

As a driver, Jones burst on the USAC scene in 1960, joining his friend and traveling partner Jim Hurtubise in defeating all the venerable Offenhauser-powered sprint cars with much less expensive V8 “stock block” Chevrolet powerplants. Jones was offered cars to drive at Indianapolis that first year, but the savvy newcomer chose instead to watch from the sidelines as Hurtubise smashed the qualifying track records and dominated the Rookie of the Year honors. Jones had decided instead to make his championship debut after the “500” to potentially enjoy a full season on “the circuit” before returning to Indianapolis the following May with valuable miles under his belt.

It worked out better than expected.

By the time he almost won the 1960 Milwaukee 200 with a Quin Epperly-built “laydown” that August, Jones already had been blessed with the break of a lifetime by testing tires for Firestone, thus racking up hundreds of miles at IMS before ever taking a rookie test. Everything seemed to be in place for him to drive the same Epperly car the following May until veteran Tony Bettenhausen took it out for a “test hop,” raved over its handling and convinced car owner Lindsey Hopkins he should purchase it for Bettenhausen to drive.

Jones wasn’t out of a ride for long.

J.C. Agajanian, for whom Bettenhausen had previously agreed to drive in 1961, was already somewhat of a mentor to Jones, and it didn’t take long for Agajanian to hire him in Bettenhausen’s place. Jones qualified fifth for the “500,” led 27 laps and might have been a late-race contender for victory had he not been hit in the eye by a rock. Even with blood streaming into his goggles and an engine down on power due to a fouled spark plug, he refused to give up, flagged off several laps behind at the end in 12th place. The Rookie of the Year balloting resulted in a tie between Jones and Bobby Marshman, who finished seventh.

Jones’ 1960 USAC Sprint Car season had culminated with the final Mid-West Sprint Car title and was followed in 1961 by the inaugural National Sprint Car title, the first in which the previously separate championships of the Mid-West, East and Pacific Coast were merged. Jones eventually won 25 USAC Sprint Car feature events, along with another 25 wins in USAC Midget Car feature events despite competing only on an occasional basis.

At the end of the 1961 season, Jones posted his first of six USAC National Championship victories with a win in the season-ending 100-mile dirt track event at the Arizona State Fairgrounds.

By this time, Jones had already been heeding the advice of his racing hero, 1952 Indy 500 winner Troy Ruttman, in seeking Agajanian’s help with investments. It had begun with steady contributions from Jones’ sprint car earnings until their holdings, as partners, grew to include a variety of valuable real estate acquisitions. Set up with a Firestone store in 1965, Jones worked hard with that investment, and it wasn’t long before he opened a second store and a third, eventually topping out with no less than 47 of them. Even after selling the whole enterprise many years later, he remained on board as a consultant, with his iconic name still appearing above the main entrances.

Although Rodger Ward won his second “500” in 1962, Ward often said Jones was the moral winner of that race. The first – and only – driver to qualify faster than 150 mph that year, Jones, in only his second “500” start, proceeded to lead 120 of the first 125 laps of the race until failing brakes obliged him to slow down. Never giving up, as was typical, he nursed his ailing car home to seventh after having run for almost 200 miles without brakes.

In 1963, Jones won the Indianapolis 500 in the No. 98 Watson-Offy nicknamed “Calhoun,” although the race was not without controversy. Late in the running, oil began to seep from a tiny crack in an externally mounted oil tank, placing Chief Steward Harlan Fengler in the unenviable position of having to decide whether or not to black-flag the leader. While he was still deliberating, the leak stopped, and Jones was allowed to continue to the victory.

Just over a year later, Jones was invited to drive two races for Team Lotus, the first being the August Milwaukee 200 when Jim Clark was not available, and the other as Clark’s teammate for the Trenton (New Jersey) 200 in September.

    Jones won both races.

It was quite a compliment when Lotus team principal Colin Chapman came forth with an offer to have Jones partner World Champion Clark on the Formula One circuit, but for a variety of reasons, Jones politely declined, preferring to race at home. He landed yet another title, capturing the 1964 USAC Stock Car championship with eight wins in 15 starts for Bill Stroppe’s Mercury team, and he even trounced the sports car contingent in the late-season Los Angeles Times Grand Prix at Riverside Raceway in California.

Jones’ sixth and final USAC Championship victory came in June 1965 in the Milwaukee 100, driving the same Agajanian-owned Lotus with which he had finished second to Clark in the most recent “500.” He had decided to cut back on INDYCAR SERIES racing at that point and made only one more start for the balance of the year, racing USAC Stock Cars instead and becoming more and more involved with off-road racing.

Despite Jones’ numerous victories and accomplishments, he also will be remembered for almost winning the “500” in 1967 with Andy Granatelli’s controversial, STP-sponsored, four-wheel-drive turbine.

Jones qualified a disappointing sixth with the dominant car, but it didn’t take him long to get to the front on Race Day. Using the four-wheel-drive system to its fullest extent, Jones negotiated the turns above the accepted “groove,” and by the time he entered Turn 2 of the opening lap, he had driven around the outside of all but pole sitter Mario Andretti. As they cleared Turn 2 and headed down the backstretch, Jones moved to the inside and sped past Andretti with apparent ease to lead the first lap by a huge margin.

Rain fell after only 18 laps, forcing the race into a second day, but then the story pretty much remained the same. When an inexpensive bearing in the rear end failed within sight of the finish, Jones had led for 171 of the 197 laps.

In 1968, Jones was supposed to drive the much-revised No. 40 turbine in the “500,” but he ended up never turning a lap, having weighed his chances of winning against the growing responsibilities of his many business investments and his family. He decided instead to step down and turn over the car to Leonard, who was driving for the team Jones co-owned with Miletich.

Although he was now no longer an Indianapolis 500 driver, that did not mean Jones was through with driving. He became part of Ford’s effort to win the SCCA Trans-Am championship, and he won the driver’s title in 1970. In off-road racing, he teamed up again with Stroppe to score five major wins with a much-modified Ford Bronco, sponsored by Olympia Beer and affectionately nicknamed “Big Oly.” The combination won the Baja 1000 in 1971 and 1972, the Baja 500 in 1970 and 1973, and the Las Vegas Mint 400 in 1973.

Jones is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Judy, and sons PJ and Page, both of whom had professional racing careers. PJ Jones followed in his father’s footsteps by starting the Indianapolis 500 in 2004 and 2006. Page Jones was making great strides on Midwest short tracks until he suffered serious injuries in a crash in 1994, ending his driving career.

Parnelli Jones was inducted into numerous Halls of Fame, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame, the National Motorsports Hall of Fame and both the National Sprint Car and National Midget Halls of Fame.

Statements on Passing of Parnelli Jones

INDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, June 4, 2024) – Statements from Roger Penske and Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles about 1963 Indianapolis 500 winner Parnelli Jones, who died June 4 at age 90 in Torrance, California:

“The racing world has lost a great competitor and a true champion. Parnelli Jones was one of the most accomplished racers in history, and his determination and will to win made him one of the toughest competitors I have ever seen. From racing against him on track to competing against him as a fellow team owner, I always respected Parnelli’s passion and commitment to the sport he loved. I was proud to call Parnelli a good friend for many years, and our thoughts are with his family as we remember one of the true legends of motorsports.”

    – Roger Penske

“In over 115 years of racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, there have been many iconic moments and a handful of iconic drivers. Parnelli Jones was a total icon, both for his driving skill and the magical moments he created in the Indianapolis 500. He will always be known for his speed, talent and fearless approach, and for his personal demeanor and character. The first to officially break 150 mph at Indy, he also will be remembered for driving the famed STP turbine to near-victory in 1967 and as the winning Indy 500 owner in 1970 and 1971. His fingerprints on our sport go well beyond the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A winner in virtually everything on wheels including USAC, NASCAR and off-road racing, he is truly one of the most versatile competitors the sport has ever seen. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

    – J. Douglas Boles

ABEL Motorsports holds points lead on a rough and tumble day in Detroit

    • Jacob Abel brings the No. 51 home in fifth position to retain the points lead
    • Yuven Sundaramoorthy holds the quickest race lap time for much of the race before a late incident puts him back in the field

DETROIT (2 June 2024) – At the end of a chaotic 500th INDY NXT by Firestone series race, ABEL Motorsports had retained the points lead and posted solid runs with both team entries in Sunday’s 45-lap Grand Prix of Detroit.

Jacob Abel (Louisville, Ky.) and Yuven Sundaramoorthy (Oconomowoc, Wis.) both endured incidents on track that left their respective Dallaras with damage, but each driver fought hard to the end, with Sundaramoorthy coming home in 14th and Abel in fifth – retaining the championship lead by 25 points over race winner Louis Foster.

Abel started on the front row for the fifth straight race, while Sundaramoorthy took the green in a season-high fourth. Abel held off the cars behind who tried to go three-wide through the turn 1 hairpin but on lap two, Caio Collett was able to make the inside pass stick, with Abel slotting right behind in third.

Sundaramoorthy jumped on the throttle through the first three corners, taking seventh by laps end. But on lap three, a car hard into the Turn 7 wall brought out the race’s first yellow.

Going green once again on lap nine, another three-wide group of cars through Turn 1 saw Sundaramoorthy stuck on the inside of Callum Hedge and slide back to eighth – but only momentarily, as a car ahead went into the turn 1 runoff. Meanwhile, Abel held his position and managed his push-to-pass ahead of Michael d’Orlando behind.

On lap 20, d’Orlando moved alongside, and as the pair went down the back straight side-by-side, d’Orlando spun, catching Abel’s left rear wheel and sending the No. 51 sideways. Abel kept his composure as the ABEL team confirmed to him that the tire was fine, though Abel was left with a resulting shift in balance that caused an increase in rear tire wear. He held onto third while Sundaramoorthy took advantage of the slowdown behind them to take sixth as the yellow came out.

On the restart, Abel continued to fight the balance issue, finding himself pinwheeled through the hairpin back into fourth. Sundaramoorthy tried to follow his teammate through turn 4 but tagged the car ahead and damaged his front wing, sending him back to ninth.

Nursing his damaged car, Abel couldn’t hold off Myles Rowe and fell to fifth, while Sundaramoorthy, with the damaged front wing affecting aero, went into the turn 1 runoff, coming back on track a lap down. A late incident ended the race under caution, with Abel fifth and Sundaramoorthy in 14th.

For ABEL Motorsports team manager John Brunner, the hectic race was as expected, given Detroit’s tight corners – but he takes away many more positives than negatives at the end of the race weekend.

“There aren’t many places to pass here so drivers have to be aggressive,” said Brunner. “Yes, we’re disappointed, but that’s what happens when you finish on the podium in every race up to this point – so if this turns out to be our worst race, we’re in for a pretty good year. Yuven drove an outstanding race, just one mistake that ruined his day, but other than that, the run he had throughout the day was outstanding. He did a really, really good job out there. Yes, Jacob had a tough run, but a lot of teams had a worse day than that.
And we’re still leading the championship.”

While both drivers were disappointed, both were also happy to leave the streets of Detroit with cars
    engendering limited damage.

“We lacked a bit of pace, but I was also driving too conservatively,” said Abel. “The other drivers were more aggressive and took advantage of the situations better than I did, so there’s no reason we shouldn’t have been on the podium. But we finished in the top five and still have the points lead with a bit of damage, but we still brought it home. I was lucky in the incident with Michael to come away with minimal damage, but I did really have to hang onto it there through the end.”

“We were fast, the team gave me a great car,” said Sundaramoorthy. “Hopefully this speed translates going forward. But I feel bad that I gave it up there. I should have defended better but when I lost the position to Hedge, I got really mad at myself and made a move that probably wasn’t there, so I feel bad for Jamie. I’m going to have to just put that behind me as I head to my home race (at Road America).”

Abel’s No. 51 Dallara sported a new color scheme this weekend that represents the new BlueOval SK pair of facilities: a six square mile auto production complex in Tennessee and a pair of plants in Kentucky that will manufacture the next generation of electric vehicle batteries. The BlueOval SK Battery Park in Glendale, Ky. is ABEL Construction Company’s largest project to date.

ABEL Motorsports thanks partners ABEL Construction Company, Advance Ready Mix, Boyd Cat®, S Team Motorsports and OMP for their continued support.

Next up for ABEL Motorsports and the INDY NXT by Firestone will be the Grand Prix at Road America, June 9 at 1:05 p.m. ET. The race will be streamed live in the U.S. on Peacock, while international viewers can watch via INDYCARLIVE, with INDYCAR Radio available at indycar.com and on Sirius XM.
