Pataskala, Ohio (19 September 2024) – Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) will add a new face to its 2025 NTT INDYCAR SERIES stable with the addition of Marcus Armstrong who will run the No. 66 MSR entry alongside current MSR driver Felix Rosenqvist.

Coming from a strong open wheel background that includes F4, Formula 3 and Formula 2, Armstrong is now looking to build on his first two seasons of INDYCAR competition as he joins MSR in 2025.

Armstrong was quick to adapt to the INDYCAR series, earning Rookie of the Year in 2023 despite only contesting the road course rounds, taking five top tens in his 12 starts.

The New Zealander added ovals to his INDYCAR calendar in 2024, running the full 17-points paying races this past season, taking three top five finishes including his first INDYCAR podium in Detroit.

“I’m very proud to be joining Meyer Shank Racing in 2025,” said Armstrong. “I had a great feeling when I met both Mike Shank and Jim Meyer, their passion for performance and meticulous work ethic was obvious from our first conversation and I want to thank them both for this opportunity. MSR, which will be entering its ninth season running in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, is eager to build on its momentum from the 2024 season which saw the team qualify in the top six, 15 times and finish in the top ten, 10 times. MSR team co-owner, Mike Shank is confident that with the addition of Armstrong for 2025, the team is in a position to produce consistent results next year.

“We’re very excited to welcome Marcus onboard,” said Shank. “He’s really shown a lot of growth and consistency in his first two years in INDYCAR, which is really difficult to do. This series is probably one of the most competitive series out there and he has proven himself to be a real contender. We are going to do everything we can to give him the car and the tools to produce results next year.”

With the 2024 season closing out this past weekend, MSR will begin preparations right away to be ready for the 2025 season opener in St. Petersburg in March.

Yuven Sundaramoorthy scores best INDY NXT by Firestone season finish of his rookie season

LEBANON, Tenn. (15 September, 2024) – Yuven Sundaramoorthy saved the best for last, moving from 11th to second through the INDY NXT by Firestone field to capture his top series finish to date in the 65-lap Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Speedway.

Rain halted series qualifying on Saturday midway through the session, with Sundaramoorthy (No. 22 Optima Batteries/Clarios/ABEL Motorsports) at the top of the speed charts. The cancellation meant the field would start based on points, with Jacob Abel (No. 51 ABEL Construction) starting second, Sundaramoorthy 11th and Taylor Ferns (No. 55 Bradford Allen/ABEL Motorsports) 18th. Knowing he had the speed, Sundaramoorthy was determined to go for the win.

But drama started even before the green flag, as Abel experienced a steering wheel failure, with the wheel refusing to click into place. He immediately came to pit lane for a new one – which meant he took the green from the back of the 18-car field.

At the drop of the green, Sundaramoorthy headed straight for the high line, moving up to seventh by lap three then using the low line to steadily continue passing cars as he took third on lap 17.

Abel also began making moves, up to 15th by lap 10 and 13th by lap 19. But unfortunately for Ferns, an issue brought her to pit lane on lap 20, ending her day.

By lap 28, the leaders had caught the tail of the field, and Sundaramoorthy balanced getting through traffic and tracking down the two leaders – all while laying down lap times one or more miles an hour quicker. After a multiple-laps battle, Sundaramoorthy made a move in Turn 1 to take second, while Abel moved into the top 10, taking eighth position several laps later.

Slight contact between two cars on lap 53 prodcuced the only yellow of the race, bringing the leaders together with lapped cars behind. Going green with seven laps remaining, Sundaramoorthy stapled himself to the leader, looking for a way by, but at the checkered flag, he was happy with the second-place finish – and a positive start to his 2025 season with the team.

“That’s everything I could have hoped for,” said Sundaramoorthy. “The ABEL team gave me the best car. If quali hadn’t been rained out, I think we would have checked out, but Louis (Foster) ran a perfect race, he didn’t give me an opening. He was breaking the draft as he needed to do and I just couldn’t hold it. I didn’t warm my tires up enough initially on the restart so the first couple of laps were a bit sketchy but once I got rolling, I just caught him. I think we should have had a go there at the end, but I made the pass in the wrong corner and that was that.

“But this has been a great learning year for me,” continued Sundaramoorthy. “I signed a two-year deal with the team so we always knew that was the focus. But the second half of the year, I felt super comfortable. I can’t wait for next year.”

An eighth-place finish was not how Abel wanted to end his INDY NXT – and his junior formula – career, but looking back over a season that includes 10 podiums and three wins in 14 races, and second place in the championship battle, he knows that he’s made a statement as he looks toward a move to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.

“When I left pit lane, I turned the wheel and it wouldn’t click into place,” said Abel. “I don’t know what it was but it was just something mechanical. Definitely not how I wanted my INDY NXT career to end, but we made a few moves through the field and hopefully showed what we can do when things don’t go our way.

“I’m proud of the entire team this season – everyone on the team worked so hard to get me where I got in the end, I’m glad we were able to do this as a group. Some of these guys have been with me through my whole junior formula career so I’m happy with how the season went – that obviously wasn’t how it was supposed to end but I’m really proud of everything.”

Team principal Bill Abel looked back on the season for his two full-time drivers, noting the progression that both Abel and Sundaramoorthy have accomplished.

“In my mind, this season exceeds our expectations,” said Abel. “The championship didn’t quite go like we wanted it to, but Jacob led the first part of the season and was never out of second place, so that’s a pretty good run at it. We had the pace to win today, Yuven showed that.

“And I think one of the big achievements for us is watching Yuven’s progression this season, from where he started to the way he finished up,” said Abel. “That’s what we predicted with him, similar to what we’ve seen with Jacob over the last three years. Yuven will be back with us next, definitely one of the championship contenders. We hope to have a few other drivers with him to help him that effort, drivers that are going to be really good, able to share good supporting data and video. It’s exciting – the team is in a really good spot.”

The race might not be a “home” one for the Speedway, Ind.-based team, or for Louisville, Ky.-based ABEL Construction, but family, friends and employees made it feel like one, as over 125 people gathered in the team’s hospitality area and in the grandstands for the race.

“We really appreciated everyone who came out,” said Abel. “It was great to see all the ABEL Construction shirts everywhere!”

Lebanon, Tenn., (15 September 2024) – Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) closed the 2024 NTT INDYCAR SERIES in strong fashion as David Malukas (No. 66 AutoNation / Arctic Wolf Honda) claimed a ninth-place finish in Sunday’s season-ending Big Machine Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway.

Starting fifth, Malukas ran at the sharp end of the grid all day and threatened the leaders throughout all 206 laps around the 1.33-mile concrete oval. The team made the bold choice to stretch the fuel load of the No. 66 machine in the waning laps of the event, promoting Malukas to the lead with 10 laps to go, but when the hoped-for caution flag didn’t materialize, the Chicago driver pitted out of the lead with six laps left and settled for a ninth-place result.

The move did cement the No. 66 car’s place in the Leader’s Circle program as one of the top 22 cars in the INDYCAR SERIES this season, earning the team a $1.2 million bonus for doing so.

Felix Rosenqvist (No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda) saw his best oval-track qualifying of the season go for naught as a tire failure resulted in a race-ending crash on Lap 56. The Swedish driver started third and was running in the top three when the tire went down and caused hard impact with the wall. Rosenqvist only failed to finish in four of the year’s 17 races, but all four of them came when the driver of the No. 60 machine had qualified ninth of better

The ninth-place run by Malukas marked his second top-10 result of the season and the eighth for MSR during the 2024 campaign. MSR made 35 combined starts during the ’24 INDYCAR season, the most since joining the series in 2017. The season’s results give the team 37 top-10 finishes in its 156 starts (23.7%). MSR also led in five different races, which is the most in a single season in team history.

Even though the result wasn’t what we wanted, our race was amazing. The guys did an awesome job, amazing stops and we were jumping people there, it was all because of them. Felix Rosenqvist: “It’s been a summary of our year as we had a super-good run going on and the tire blew up. Luckily it wasn’t a very big hit but it took us out of the race. It started feeling weird going into the corner and then it drifted up and I was just a passenger.”

LEBANON, Tenn. (Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024) – Winning a championship has its privileges, even when it rains.

2024 INDY NXT by Firestone champion Louis Foster will start first in the Music City Grand Prix on Sunday, as entrant points set the starting grid for the final race of the season for the INDYCAR development series when qualifying was interrupted and eventually rained out Saturday at Nashville Superspeedway.

“Interesting session; I’m sure everyone would have preferred to qualify,” Foster said. “But it’s not what we got today. Hopefully the rain stays away tomorrow for the race. Should be an interesting race – not a lot of practice here today. We’ll see what happens.”

Andretti Global driver Foster will start at the front of the field for the seventh time in 14 races this season. He led both practice sessions today on the 1.33-mile concrete oval before qualifying.

Foster clinched the series championship in his No. 26 Copart/Novara Technologies car at the last event, Aug. 31 at the Milwaukee Mile.

Nine of the 18 drivers in the field made qualifying attempts today before rain washed out the session. Rain already had interrupted qualifying for a brief period after the first four drivers made attempts before the session resumed, only to be halted again.

The nine drivers who made attempts will receive a set of new Firestone tires so all cars will start the 65-lap race Sunday on sticker tires. Live coverage starts at 11:50 a.m. ET on Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Jacob Abel will join Foster on the front row, starting second in the No. 51 Abel Construction entry.

Row 2 will be comprised of rookie HMD Motorsports teammates Caio Collet in the No. 18 car starting third and Christian Brooks in the No. 39 machine starting fourth.

Rookie Callum Hedge will start inside Row 2 in fifth in the No. 17 HMD Motorsports car, with fellow rookie Salvador de Alba Jr. starting sixth in the No. 2 Grupo Indi entry of Andretti Cape INDY NXT.

LEBANON, Tenn. (Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024) – Eyes will be focused on the front and rear of the field at the season-ending Big Machine Music City Grand Prix Presented by Gainbridge on Sunday after the results of NTT P1 Award qualifying Saturday at Nashville Superspeedway.

Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global earned his second career pole – his first on an oval – with a two-lap average speed of 201.520 mph in the No. 27 AutoNation Honda. But an equal headline during the qualifying session on the 1.33-mile concrete oval was the performance of championship leader Alex Palou, who qualified 15th in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda and will start 24th in the 27-car field due to a nine-spot grid penalty for an unapproved engine change after the NTT INDYCAR SERIES’ last race, Sept. 1 at the Milwaukee Mile.

“I’m stoked right now,” Kirkwood said. “It’s huge for our season to end off with a pole. I was a little upset we didn’t get a win or a pole (this season), and this is our final chance to do it, and we got it done.”

Reigning series champion Palou leads fellow two-time series champion Will Power by 33 points entering the 206-lap season finale Sunday (3 p.m. ET, NBC, Peacock, Universo, INDYCAR Radio Network). Palou must finish ninth or better to secure his third title in the last four seasons. He led the opening practice today at 199.862.

“It wasn’t ideal,” Palou said. “It was a lot more comfortable this morning during practice, so we don’t really know what happened to the 10 car. The first lap wasn’t too bad, then the second lap was really, really bad. Not what we wanted, not what we needed.

“It’s not making it easier, for sure. It’s time to see what we can do. Hopefully we can make up some spots. The car was really good this morning.”

Power will start fourth after his qualifying run of 200.628 in the No. 12 Verizon Business Team Penske Chevrolet. He must finish third or better to have any chance of capturing his first title since 2022.

“This is as good as I could do right there,” Power said. “You can never ask for more than that. Would have been nice to get a pole, but that’s life.

“We’ll do what we can in the race tomorrow. You know how these things roll. If it’s our day, it will be our day. If not, we’ll try again next year.”

Two-time and reigning Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge winner Josef Newgarden will join Kirkwood on the front row Sunday after qualifying second at 201.352 in the No. 2 Hitachi Astemo Team Penske Chevrolet. Nashville-area native Newgarden has won 10 of the last 17 oval races in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.

Felix Rosenqvist qualified third at 200.676 in the No. 60 AutoNation/SiriusXM Honda of Meyer Shank Racing. All-time INDYCAR SERIES pole leader Power will join him in Row 2 after failing to earn a pole in a season for the first time since 2008.

Santino Ferrucci continued his breakthrough season for AJ Foyt Racing by qualifying fifth at 200.497 in the No. 14 Sexton Properties Chevrolet. David Malukas put two Meyer Shank Racing cars in the top six with his qualifying run of 200.479 mph in the No. 66 AutoNation/Arctic Wolf Honda. Ferrucci and Malukas will be teammates in 2025 for Foyt’s team.

Nearly all 27 drivers in practice and qualifying coped with lack of track knowledge, as this is the first INDYCAR SERIES race at the facility since 2008. Power, Scott Dixon and Graham Rahal are the only drivers in the field this weekend who previously raced at the concrete oval.

Drivers also adapted to a tricky bump in Turn 4 that unsettled some cars. Kirkwood said his Andretti Global engineering team, led by Jeremy Milless, found a smooth setup for that challenge that helped Kirkwood earn his first pole since July 2023 on the streets of Toronto, a race he won.

“That’s something we worked on heavily in practice one, just to get compliance over that,” Kirkwood said of the bump. “I don’t know if it’s going to pay off in the race, but it paid off right now for us in qualifying.”

Lebanon, Tenn., (24 September 2024) – Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) saved some of its best efforts for last on a cloudy Tennessee Saturday, equaling a 2024 season-high qualifying result after putting both team cars in the top six for Sunday’s NTT INDYCAR SERIES season-ending Big Machine Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway.

Felix Rosenqvist (No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda) earned his best oval-track qualifying of the season, snaring the third spot in Saturday’s session after carding a two-lap average of 200.676mph around the 1.33-mile oval.

David Malukas (No. 66 AutoNation / Arctic Wolf Honda) set the Ohio-based team up for a successful Sunday by posting a two-lap average of 200.479mph to claim the sixth position, matching MSR’s previous best qualifying effort set earlier this season in Toronto.

MSR has scored 15 top six qualifying runs so far this season and Saturday’s qualifying results mark the fifth time this year that both MSR cars qualified in the top 10, a run that includes double top 10s in four of the year’s final five oval-track starts. Malukas has started ninth or better in six of the last seven races while Rosenqvist locked down his 11th top-10 result of the campaign with his run.

Felix Rosenqvist: “We kind of ran out of gear, we did a last-minute trim so it was kind of banging on the (rev) limiter a little bit. But the car has been phenomenal and David had a really good run, so we were able to learn a couple of things there that helped us.”

David Malukas: “The concrete has a lot less grip, it’s almost like the whole car is just sliding. I think once we get into the race it’s going to be pretty interesting to tell where the tire deg is going to be so that we can keep pushing. It seems like for the race the second lane is going to be really tough to hang on to. The high line practice late today could change that, but we will see.”
