Series Leader Lundqvist Rockets to Pole at WWTR

MADISON, Ill. (Friday, Aug. 19, 2022) – Linus Lundqvist’s car bobbled in the first turn of his two-lap qualifying run Friday afternoon at World Wide Technology Raceway, yet he still managed to win his sixth pole position of the 2022 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires season.

It’s been that kind of a year for the Swedish driver.

Championship leader Lundqvist turned a two-lap average speed of 160.259 mph in the No. 26 HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing car. Lundqvist leads second place Hunter McElrea by 95 points with four races remaining this season.

This was the second straight and seventh overall top starting spot this season for Lundqvist, who was awarded the No. 1 grid position based on entrant points for the previous race earlier this month at Nashville after qualifying was rained out. He won five consecutive poles on track earlier this season.

“We were good in the test here a couple of days ago,” Lundqvist said. “We just improved little by little. We knew that qualifying was going to be super tight.

“I knew that I was going to have to push to the limit and maybe a little bit beyond because I remember qualifying here last year, I was under the limit. So, I thought I’m going to have to change that up. It was a close call in (Turn) 1, but we managed to string it together with a good second lap. Super happy.”

Lundqvist will aim to extend his series lead for victories with his sixth win of 2022 during the 75-lap race Saturday afternoon on the 1.25-mile oval. Peacock Premium, INDYCAR Live! and the INDYCAR Radio Network will provide live coverage at 4:15 p.m. ET.

Benjamin Pedersen ensured a front-row lockout by HMD Motorsports by qualifying second at 160.124 in the No. 24 Global Racing Group with HMD car. Pedersen led practice earlier Friday at 160.662 and also led both sessions of an Indy Lights test Aug. 12 at WWTR.

Andretti Autosport took the next four spots in the lineup. Matthew Brabham qualified third at 159.572 in the No. 83 Andretti Autosport car, with rookie Christian Rasmussen fourth at 159.475 in the No. 28 Road to Indy/Stellrecht entry.

McElrea will start fifth in the No. 27 Andretti Autosport car after qualifying at 159.267. Sting Ray Robb qualified sixth at 159.215 in the No. 2 Sekady car.

  • Power Ties Andretti at WWTR with 67th Career INDYCAR Pole

Power Ties Andretti at WWTR with 67th Career INDYCAR Pole

MADISON, Ill. (Friday, Aug. 19, 2022) – Will Power earned the 67th pole position of his storied INDYCAR SERIES career – tying the legendary Mario Andretti for the all-time series record – and captured the NTT P1 Award on Friday afternoon for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline at World Wide Technology Raceway.

NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship leader Power, from Australia, turned a two-lap average speed of 182.727 mph in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet to earn his fourth pole of the season. Power will earn an extra point for the NTT P1 Award, which could come in handy since he leads six-time series champion Scott Dixon by just six points with three races remaining.

“It’s just amazing,” Power said. “Amazing year so far. This is a big victory for me, to reach the 67 number and equal such a legend of the sport in Mario Andretti. I just can’t believe that I’m right there with Mario because there’s been no one like him.”

Saturday’s live coverage of the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline will begin at 6 p.m. ET. (USA Network, Peacock Premium and the INDYCAR Radio Network).

Fellow championship contender Marcus Ericsson will join Power on the front row after his qualifying run of 182.070 in the No. 8 Bryant Honda. Ericsson is third in points, 12 behind Power.

Two-time series champion and 2022 title contender Josef Newgarden will start third after his run of 181.629 in the No. 3 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet. Newgarden, who has won the last two INDYCAR SERIES races at World Wide Technology Raceway, is fourth in points, 22 behind Power.

Scott McLaughlin ensured the asymmetrical, 1.25-mile oval was a Penske playground with all three cars in the first two rows of the starting grid, as he qualified fourth at 181.406 in the No. 3 Odyssey Battery Team Penske Chevrolet.

Chip Ganassi Racing also had a strong day, putting three cars in the top six. Reigning series champion Alex Palou qualified fifth at 181.289 in the No. 10 American Legion Honda, while six-time series champion Dixon will start sixth after a qualifying run of 180.954 in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Power’s pole wasn’t a surprise, given he already led the series with three poles entering this event and paced practice earlier today at 180.539. Power also won the NTT P1 Award for this race last year at 180.618.

Still, there was nothing routine about his qualifying run in the shadow of the famous Gateway Arch in St. Louis.

Power tried to keep the throttle pedal to the floor in Turns 3 and 4 during his last lap on the tricky oval, and he realized midway through that he needed to downshift to complete the corner without contact. Still, Power deftly kept the car off the SAFER Barrier and delivered the coveted 67th pole.

“I’m still shaking,” Power said. “There was nothing left on the table – let’s put it that way. The second lap, I was loose in (Turns) 1-2 and then tried to go again as much as I could in (Turns) 3-4.”

There was one incident during qualifying. Felix Rosenqvist spun exiting Turn 2, skillfully avoiding the SAFER Barrier and spinning slowly into the tire barrier on the inside of the track, with very light contact to the rear of the No. 7 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet. Rosenqvist, who will start last in the 26-car field, was unhurt.

WILL POWER PUTS CHEVY ON POLE AT WORLD WIDE TECHNOLOGY RACEWAY

TIES MARIO ANDRETTI FOR MOST POLES IN NTT INDYCAR SERIES HISTORY

Team Penske’s Will Power, No. 12 Verizon 5G Chevrolet, had a historic run for the NTT Pole Award for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway by tying Mario Andretti for the most poles in NTT INDYCAR Series. Power now sits at 67 poles:

EARLIER THIS SEASON WILL POWER WAS SAYING OH, I DON’T THINK I’M GONNA GET THERE TO TIE MARIO. YOU’RE THERE. YOU’VE GOT NUMBER 67. AMAZING,

“Amazing. And I would never have ever been able to do this without Verizon and Penske just I’ve had such a fantastic career and they’ve given me such great opportunity and I cannot thank them enough and of course Chevrolet too because a lot of those polls were with the Chevy engine”

DID BEING THE CHAMPIONSHIP LEADER AND BEING ABLE TO LEARN OFF YOUR TWO TEAMMATES RON DID THAT HELP YOU GET NUMBER 67 TODAY,

“I think the only thing was to know the lap time to go for and I’m still kind of shaking because I tried to go wide open it 3 and 4. I it got half way around wide open then I knew it wasn’t gonna make it. So I downshifted and kind of floated out towards the wall but there was nothing left on the table. Put it that way on the second lap and it loosened in one and two and then try to go again as much as I could in three and four. But man just amazing, amazing year so far. And this is a this is a big victory in a way for me to reach the 67 number and equals such a legend of the sport and Mario Andretti so I just can’t believe that I’m right there with Mario because he’s a legend.”

AND IT’S ANOTHER POINT ADDED TO YOUR CHAMPIONSHIP., YOU ARE RUNNING FOR CHAMPIONSHIPS EVERY YEAR FOR A DECADE EXCEPT LAST YEAR, NOT SO MUCH IT YOU THINK YOU’D HAVE ANOTHER CHANCE AT THIS POINT IN YOUR CAREER TO GO FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP?

“I did I did because we had such potential and a lot of those years and worked very hard this year and really good mentally and I’ve got such a good group around me this year. I mean, I’m just I love the group, the crew that I have, they’re really good positive group and they’re great guys. So they’re as much to do with this championship as I am maybe more to do with I”

ON THE SUCCESS HE’S HAD THIS SEASON:

“This year. Yeah, it’s, it’s, it’s definitely something I worked on in the offseason, just understanding the potential that I had year after year is to try harness that and not let them go. And that’s what we’ve done. Which means at times I settled for a second position, which isn’t my favorite thing, but it is what you have to do to win a championship.”

YOU HAD A COUPLE OF WOW MOMENTS AND STILL GOT THE POLE:

“Yeah, it was. It was it was on the edge because I thought I’m gonna have to go wide open in three four, which I tried to get all the way to halfway through and then it roll bottomed and then I kind of floated wise so then quickly downshift. And then I went into one then had a big moment in the middle of one, but just kept after knowing that I’d done a six if I can repeat that. I couldn’t get a pole.

  • Helio Castroneves Returns to Meyer Shank Racing for 2023 NTT INDYCAR season

Helio Castroneves Returns to Meyer Shank Racing for 2023 NTT INDYCAR season

Pataskala, Ohio (19 August 2022) – Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) is excited to announce that Helio Castroneves will return to the team’s IndyCar program for 2023 driving the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda. Castroneves and Simon Pagenaud – No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda – make up MSR’s IndyCar stable for the 2023 NTT IndyCar Series season.

Castroneves first joined MSR for a six race campaign in the 2021 INDYCAR season. The first race of the season for MSR and Castroneves as a team – the 105th Running of the Indianapolis 500 – exceeded all expectations as Castroneves raced to a record-tying fourth Indianapolis 500 victory – exactly 12 years after his previous 500 win in 2009.

The win was also the first-ever IndyCar series victory for MSR with the Ohio-based team having made its series debut in 2017.

The 2021 Indianapolis 500 was MSR’s 38th NTT INDYCAR SERIES entry after the team ran a six race program in 2018 and ten races in 2020. The team went on to compete full-time in 2020 and expanded in 2021 to one full-time entry and the partial season campaign with Castroneves.

To date, Castroneves has 31 victories and 50 IndyCar pole positions on his resume – putting him in IndyCar’s top ten in history for most victories and pole positions. The 2023 IndyCar season will see Castroneves once again attempt to be the first driver in IndyCar history to claim a fifth Indianapolis 500 victory.

    Team Quotes:

    Mike Shank:

“Keeping Helio onboard wasn’t really a question for us. We’ve built a really strong relationship with him over these last two race seasons. He brings so much to the table, on and off the track. He’s been able to help us grow as a team and we’ve been able to learn from his years of experience. It’s truly a mutually beneficial relationship. And of course he’s a perfect face of the sport and has such an infectious personality, so to have him on our team is an honor.”

    Helio Castroneves:

“I’m so excited that myself and Meyer Shank Racing have renewed for 2023. I’m super optimistic for an amazing season because of everything that we have built this season – all the positive data and positive energy. I can’t thank Mike and Jim enough and of course all of our partners. There is no question that we are all super excited to continue this amazing partnership. Simon (Pagenaud) and I are going to do everything we can to finish this season strong, and then have a good start to 2023 and some even better results.”

  • Team Chevy Going ‘World Wide’ at INDYCAR Season’s Final Oval

Team Chevy Going ‘World Wide’ at INDYCAR Season’s Final Oval

Chevrolet going for fifth win at World Wide Technology Raceway since 2012

DETROIT (August 17, 2022) – Chevrolet drivers and the rest of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES will close the oval-racing season this weekend at one of the Bowtie Brand’s most successful venues on the schedule: World Wide Technology Raceway for Saturday’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500.

The 1.25-mile, egg-shaped oval is a favorite of drivers throughout the series, and especially those in the Chevrolet camp. Chevy-powered teams have won four of the six races at WWTR since INDYCAR returned to the track – formerly known as Gateway Motorsports Park – in 2017 after a 13-year absence.

Chevrolet leads in Engine Manufacturer points on the strength of nine wins and 10 pole positions in 14 races. Two of those wins came in the last short-oval event – the Iowa doubleheader in late July.

“Racing at World Wide Technology Raceway is always a great challenge from the standpoints of both drivers and engineers,” said Rob Buckner, Chevrolet Program Manager for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. “The differences in banking and degree of turn-in on opposite ends of the track is unique from any ovals we’ve run in IndyCar in the V6 era. Although it’s not as short as Iowa, we absolutely can take some of the lessons we learned in our two strong showings there and apply them to this weekend.

“We’re at that spot in the season where every lap and every point becomes critical in the Engine Manufacturer and Driver championships,” Buckner added. “Any amount of improvement or progress over the course of an event weekend can make the difference between winning and losing a championship. We want to do everything we can to make sure we remain in good position heading to the final two races.”

Will Power, driver of Team Penske’s No. 12 Verizon 5G Chevrolet, leads a crowded Drivers Championship race by six points over Scott Dixon. Another Team Penske driver – Josef Newgarden in the No. 2 PPG Chevrolet, is fourth in points with a series-high four victories this season.

Newgarden (three wins) and Power (one win) have combined for Chevrolet’s four triumphs at WWTR since 2017. The two have finished on the podium each of the last two rounds at the circuit with Arrow McLaren SP’s Pato O’Ward, No. 5 McLaren Chevrolet, finishing second to Newgarden in the previous two World Wide Technology Raceway events.

Ed Carpenter Racing team owner Ed Carpenter, driving the No. 33 Alzamend Neuro Chevrolet, also has a strong history at the track with a runner-up finish in 2019.

Chevrolet and the NTT INDYCAR Series wind down the 2022 season with the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at 6:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 20. The race will air live starting at 6 p.m. ET on USA, the Peacock streaming service, IndyCar Radio Network affiliates and SiriusXM IndyCar Nation (Channel 160). Live timing and scoring will be available at racecontrol.indycar.com.

  • Lundgaard inks multi-year extension with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing

Lundgaard inks multi-year extension with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing has retained rookie Christian Lundgaard on a new multi-year contract extension, beginning in the 2023 NTT IndyCar Series season.

The 21-year-old Lundgaard from Hedensted, Denmark, is currently embarking in his maiden season in the IndyCar circuit, where he achieved his maiden podium after finishing in second place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course in late July. He also achieved his maiden start in the top three after posting the third-fastest qualifying time during the previous IndyCar event at Nashville Street Circuit in early August.

To go along with a total of six top-10 results through the first 14-scheduled events and despite being ranked in 15th place in the drivers’ standings, he currently leads the IndyCar Rookie-of-the-Year standings with 272 points, where he is 41 points ahead of David Malukas and 91 ahead of Callum Ilott.

“I have to say a big thanks to [team co-owners] Bobby [Rahal], David [Letterman] and Mike [Lanigan] for giving me this opportunity to extend my time with the team,” Lundgaard said. “We’ve had some good results lately, and I’m sure this has also helped their decision. First of all, I’m just happy and super excited that they gave me this opportunity. A year ago at the [Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course], we qualified well [fourth] and they decided that they wanted me for a full season [in 2022]. We’ve made the most of the opportunity so far. I’m sure there are times when we could have performed better but now we have the opportunity to continue this progress.”

“We’ve been to a lot of tracks so far and have come back to some and finished on the podium, which I hope to continue,” Lundgaard added. “Qualifying third in Nashville was a big milestone for me. Making the Fast Six – and not being at the end of the Fast Six but actually having a shot at competing for the pole – was a great experience for me. We didn’t quite finish where we wanted [eighth] but it was good to have that experience and now everyone is making the most of it. I’m happy for everyone at the team, my family and the sponsors and investors, everyone that has made this possible. I’m looking forward to continuing to build momentum.”

Prior to this season, Lundgaard made his IndyCar debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course in August 2021, where he qualified fourth and finished 12th while competing for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. His transition to full-time IndyCar competition occurred following an extensive racing background that commenced with karting before winning the 2017 SMP F4 and F4 Spanish Championships. He went on to compete in Formula 3 in 2019 before spending the following two seasons in Formula 2 for ART Grand Prix, where he accumulated two victories and a best points result of seventh place in 2020.

“I am so pleased with Christian’s progress with the team and within the series,” Bobby Rahal said. “He has shown that he can be a force to be reckoned with in these races. He works well within the team, and we are pleased that we are continuing for the next several years because I believe he will continue to improve and be a potential winner in the very near future.”

“Christian has done a great job acclimatizing to the variety of challenges and new experiences this season,” Mike Lanigan added. “His approach and professionalism continues to impress us and his performance, especially in the second half of the season, speaks volumes about his potential. We are very happy to have him as part of the team for the years ahead.”

With his plans for next season set, Lundgaard’s quest to capture the 2022 IndyCar Rookie-of-the-Year title continues through the final three events of the season, beginning this upcoming weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500. The event is scheduled to occur on Saturday, August 20, at 6 p.m. ET on USA Network.

  • MSR Looking for Strong Showing in Bommarito 500

MSR Looking for Strong Showing in Bommarito 500

Madison, Ill. (16 August 2022) – Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) will be looking for a strong finish to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES as the season enters the homestretch with Saturday evening’s running of the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway (6:00pm ET, USA/Peacock, SiriusXM Ch. 160).

Simon Pagenaud and Helio Castroneves will drive the two MSR Honda-powered entries for the 260-lap race on the tight 1.25-mile egg-shaped oval located in the St. Louis suburbs.

Following Saturday’s race, only the events at Portland (Sept. 4) and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (Sept. 11) remain on the 2022 schedule.

Both Pagenaud and Castroneves are coming off a short weekend off following a rough and tumble race on the streets of Nashville which saw Pagenaud race to ninth – while racing with a broken damper – and Castroneves to 13th.

MSR is now prepping for the fourth and final oval race of the season set for this weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway.

Pagenaud is going into the weekend with a strong record at WWTR with the Frenchman racing six times at the circuit originally known as Gateway International Raceway. He led 14 laps, with his best finish third in his debut race in 2017. Pagenaud also finished fourth in 2018 and fifth in 2019. Last year, he started fourth and finished eighth, finishing on the lead lap.

Similarly Castroneves has had several strong finishes at WWTR and is a former winner at Gateway. After placing second in his 2002 IndyCar debut, he won the 2003 race from the pole. His lone race since then was in 2017, when he started third and finished fourth. He completed a perfect 648 laps in the three races, leading 233 of them. Castroneves also ran in three Champ Car events at the circuit, finishing second after starting third in 1999.

MSR made it’s debut at WWTR in 2020 for a double-header race weekend. The team brought home 11th and 13th place finishes in 2020. Last year’s outing saw the team race to a top ten finish.

Saturday’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 will be broadcast live on USA and Peacock starting at 6:00pm ET. SiriusXM will also host live IndyCar Radio coverage on XM Ch. 160.

    Driver Quotes:

    Simon Pagenaud:
“World Wide technology Raceway in St. Louis is a really interesting event because it’s a short oval, very fast and it’s the only event that we run at night. It’s very enjoyable, great racing and it’s always very tight and it’s a street fight I like to say. I’ve had some good races there – and also some not so good race there. I’m looking forward to going there with Meyer Shank Racing and try to push as far as we can and execute. We’ve improved so much every weekend, I’m very hopeful for this one.”

    Helio Castroneves:

“Wow, I’m so excited to head back to Gateway. My first race there was actually in 1999 and I finished second. I lost to Michael Andretti and that was such a cool race. I love the track – it’s fun, it’s difficult. I can’t wait to go back after so many years [4 years], we are going to have a great time.”

  • Newgarden’s the man to beat at World Wide Technology Raceway

Newgarden’s the man to beat at World Wide Technology Raceway

Three Bommarito Automotive Group 500 wins in five years while no one else has won more than once

August 13, 2022, St. Louis – NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver Josef Newgarden pretty much has figured out World Wide Technology Raceway. In the space of five years, he’s won the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 three times. Going back to 1997, when Indy cars began racing at WWTR, no one else has won more than once at the egg-shaped oval. Considered a short oval by INDYCAR drivers, the track presents unique challenges: Turns 1 and 2 and different from Turns 3 and 4. It doesn’t seem to bother Newgarden – he’s dialed in at WWTR.

“You know, I love short oval racing. I really do,” said Newgarden. “I think World Wide Technology Raceway is a great track. It’s one of my favorite events that we have all year. It’s sometimes difficult to have confidence in your car because it is so fast, and the cornering speeds have a lot of high commitment. But as a driver we like those challenges of trying to find that confidence and edge over your competitors.

“I can’t really remember each of my WWTR victories in great detail. I do remember the first one in 2017 where Simon Pagenaud and I were racing really hard there. That one is really clear. I remember last year’s, for sure. I guess it’s the middle win that I can’t recall too well. We’ve run there in the day in 2020 and we’ve run there at night, which is the typical race weekend at WWTR. It is a challenge either way. Under the sun you lose a little grip, but at night you obviously gain more grip. You lose some confidence in the car during the day when you’re sliding around a bit. It’s one of those things where you have to tune around the handling depending on the conditions.

“Sometimes, close, hard racing is necessary to make a move happen or to pull off a pass. You try and assert yourself over another driver to gain a position, and there are no gimmes at WWTR. Sometimes you have to force the issue and that can create conflicts and flareups, but that is also exciting to watch when it happens. You 100 percent get that in St. Louis.”

It’s not surprising Newgarden has a strong fan base in the St. Louis region.

“We get a lot of fans that drive up from my hometown of Nashville. I drive up myself. It’s only four hours away, so not a bad drive at all. Short ovals are great events for fans because you can see the entire track. You don’t miss any of the action, and there is quite a bit of action in St. Louis. You get great pit exchanges when the tires start to fade, and guys come in early for the undercut or stay out longer for the overcut. You get that a lot at WWTR. It’s an interesting race to watch from a lot of different angles.

“The entire group at the facility have taken it up to today’s standards. It’s a beautiful track that is very fun to drive. The entire weekend is filled with activities off-track and other series on-track. They give you great value and do it as well as any track we go to. They knock it out of the park.”

In less than one week we’ll see if Newgarden needs to make room in his trophy case for a fourth Bommarito Automotive Group 500 trophy.

Grand Prix of Portland will feature nine races from five racing series

Seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson competes in NTT INDYCAR SERIES race again; ARCA Menards Series West points leader Jake Drew aims for second win at PIR this season

PORTLAND, Ore. (Aug. 10, 2022) – The Grand Prix of Portland at Portland International Raceway (PIR) is less than a month away and will feature nine total races from five different racing series in one action-packed Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2-4.

Stock car racing will headline Saturday’s action as the ARCA Menards Series West returns to PIR for the second time this year. Then the green flag drops on the weekend’s main event featuring the NTT INDYCAR SERIES on Sunday, Sept. 4.

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES field will once again feature seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson. Johnson’s legendary NASCAR career spanned 20 years (2001-2020) and featured 83 wins (tied for sixth all time). His seven championships tie him with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt Sr. for the most in NASCAR history.

Johnson currently pilots the No. 48 Carvana Chip Ganassi Racing Honda in his second NTT INDYCAR SERIES season. He will look to build on last year’s 20th-place finish in his very first appearance at PIR.

“With the progress we have been making lately, I’m really excited to get back to Portland this year,” Johnson said. “We have come a long way in a season, and I’m just looking forward to seeing the progression each and every week.”

The veteran racer has shown signs of improvement in the back half of his second open-wheel season, which also includes all the oval races this season, as evidenced by a 16th-place finish at The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the All-New 2023 Civic Type R (July 3rd) and more recently by 11th and fifth-place results at Iowa Speedway.

“We made some changes to our thought patterns at Mid-Ohio and have been progressing significantly each week,” Johnson said. “We are focusing more on what I need to feel comfortable in the car, which translates to me being able to push the limits more. The Iowa result was such a morale booster for everyone on the No. 48 (team). It was so fulfilling. We made great strides in Toronto as well.”

The ARCA Menards Series West race at PIR on Saturday, Sept. 3, will give series points leader Jake Drew a chance to win for the second time at the 1.97-mile, 12-turn permanent road course this season. Drew took home his first career checkered flag in a rain-shortened Portland 112 on June 4th and followed that victory up with wins at Sonoma Raceway and Irwindale Speedway.

The 22-year old, second-year ARCA driver of the No. 6 Sunrise Ford Racing machine has put together an impressive 2022 campaign with these three consecutive wins, two straight pole awards and top five finishes in all six ARCA Menards Series West races. The Fullerton, Calif. product credits the team around him.

“I think it’s just how hard the whole team works from the shop to the track,” Drew said. “We’re always doing our best. Even with all the success we’ve had, we’re still just pushing like we’re still hunting down that first win. It makes it fun when we’re doing good, of course. That’s what we’re all here for.”

Drew, who spent his childhood racing go karts before making the jump to stock cars, will approach the upcoming race at Portland full of confidence after winning at PIR in June and earning a pole at the track in 2021.

“I’m hoping it doesn’t rain again. The rain was definitely tricky, but we did race there last year in the dry,” Drew said. “We got the pole last year by a significant amount of time and pulled out some pretty big leads throughout the race. I think the competition will be a little bit closer than it was last year or even in the rain earlier this year, but I still think we have a super strong package. And I can bring 16 years of karting experience along with me as always when we go to the road courses, so that always helps.”

Additionally, the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires will join the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and ARCA Menards Series West at PIR on race weekend with all three series of the open-wheel development ladder running races: Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires on Sunday (Sept. 4) and tripleheader races for both Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship.

    About Grand Prix of Portland:

Portland International Raceway (PIR) is the home of the Grand Prix of Portland. PIR is a 1.964-mile, 12-turn permanent road course owned by the City of Portland and operated under the Portland Parks and Recreation. Opened in 1960 to host sports car and drag racing, the 268-acre property hosts over 550 events annually including automotive and motorcycle road racing, motocross, cruise-ins and other special events including the Rose Cup Races. PIR has been the site of many memorable Indy car races. Al Unser Jr. won the inaugural one in 1984, and the NTT INDYCAR SERIES returned in 2018 after an 11-year absence with Takuma Sato the winner and another Indianapolis 500 champion Will Power winning in 2019. The Father’s Day race of 1986 featured Mario Andretti victorious over his son Michael on the last lap by less than a second. The closest three-way road racing finish in INDYCAR SERIES history took place at PIR in 1997 when the top three were covered by just 0.055 of a second. The Grand Prix of Portland is owned and operated by Green Savoree Portland, LLC, whose affiliates also promote three additional INDYCAR SERIES races, Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding (Feb. 25-27, 2022), The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the All-New 2023 Civic Type R (July 1-3, 2022), and the Honda Indy Toronto (July 15-17, 2022).

SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN LEADS TEAM CHEVY TO RUNNER UP FINISH IN BIG MACHINE MUSIC CITY GRAND PRIX

WILL POWER MAINTAINS POINTS’ LEAD WITH THREE RACES REMAINING

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE (August 7, 2022) – Scott McLaughlin started his No. 3 Dex Imaging Team Penske Chevrolet on pole and led 22 laps in the second annual event on the streets of Nashville. But an uncharacteristic problem on a pit stop dropped him back to 16th position with about two-thirds of the way through the 80-lap race.

The KIWI-born driver pulled-his belts tight and moved his way through the field to finish ten-tenths of a second (.1067 of a second) behind the winner. Although he was hoping to capture his third win of the season, with the runner-up finish, McLaughlin now sits sixth in the standings, 58 points behind the leader with three races remaining in the 2022 NTT INDYCAR Series season..

Although the gear shifting sensor was knocked off by contact to the back of his car early in the race, that required him to shift manually with the clutch, Will Power, No. 12 Verizon 5G Team Penske Chevrolet, fought his way to an 11th place finish. The finish, coupled with eight cautions for 36 laps that impacted over a dozen cars, kept the 2014 NTT INDYCAR Series champion in the points lead by six markers.

Nashville native and resident Josef Newgarden finished sixth in the No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet, after battling through the variety of melees that occurred after weather delayed the start of the race on-half hours. Newgarden is fourth in the standings, 22 laps down to the leader.

Felix Rosenqvist, No. 7 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet, finished seventh to give Team Chevy three of the top-seven finishers.

Chevrolet continues to lead the Series’ Manufacturer championship standings 1157 to 1089 points over the competing manufacturer,

Scott Dixon (Honda) was the race winner with Alex Palou (Honda) completing the podium.

The series moves on to World-Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois, across the river from St. Louis, Missouri on Saturday, August 20, 2022.

    TEAM PENSKE

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 2 PPG CHEVROLET, FINISHED SIXTH:

LET’S START WITH THE CONTACT WITH (ROMAIN) GROSJEAN. “I was alongside of him fully if not a little bit ahead. (Watches the replay). “Yeah, I’m already ahead of him at that point. Welcome to INDYCAR. It gets tight. It’s a good thing I was ahead. That’s the biggest thing, you’re going to want to be ahead of this guy in this type of moment.

“It’s tight street course racing. I about got taken out six times myself. We probably need to have some discussion with the younger guys. They’re very aggressive and if you’re not aggressive back, then you get run over. That’s INDYCAR racing. You have learn it pretty quick. I don’t like it but that’s the game we’re in. Ultimately we had a big fight back with the PPG car and Team Chevy. That’s all I can say. This has been a really frustrating year in a lot of ways and the way it’s built. We’ve won a lot of races and had a ton of good luck, all thanks to the team and the effort they put in. But more often than not, we’re either winning the race or things are completely going against us one way or the other. It’s built frustration for me because it’s hard to see that happen for this crew when they work so hard. I hate it, too. I’m very competitive. It happens a couple of times a year where things don’t go your way, it’s part of the luck. It’s just happened one too many times, and today was another unlucky day with the way the whole thing played out. You can’t predict these races. It’s part of the game, but it can be frustrating at times.”

SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN, NO. 3 DEX IMAGING CHEVROLET, FINISHED SECOND:

HOW MUCH MORE TIME DID YOU NEED? “One lap! We were alongside there across the finish line. We were 16th after that last pit exchange. I had an awesome restart and man the car was fast. The Dex Imaging Chevy was unreal – good on its fuel and good power. We just fell short at the end. Congratulations to Scotty (Dixon). I always dreamed about racing him to the finish. We kind of had that last year at Texas but this was a proper duel. I had a lot of fun. That’s why I come IndyCar racing. This is the best racing in the world.”

WHAT CAN YOU TAKE FROM TODAY? “I hate coming in second! It is what it is, but I learned a lot today. We’ll focus and get better. I’m really proud of everyone. I’m proud of myself, proud of my team and proud of everyone and how we rebounded. We came in with a car that was fast enough to challenge for a race win and got a pole. So it was a great weekend and a great points weekend. We’ll keep pushing the last three races of the year.”

WILL POWER, NO. 12 VERIZON 5G CHEVROLET, FINISHED 11TH: “We had the gear thing pretty early. Probably not even 30 laps in we got hit from behind. Whatever they have on the gearbox… I’ve it a couple of times and multiple people have so maybe they should change it. If you get hit from behind, it knocks out your shifting so you have to manually shift. You have to lift and you have to blip the throttle. That makes it an interesting day. I sat back and watched so much mayhem!”

AT POINT YOU WERE SITTING BEHIND SCOTT DIXON, WHO WON THE RACE. WITH THAT SAID, YOU’RE STILL LEADING THE CHAMPIONSHIP: “We thought this would be a bit of a wildcard race, like there was going to be a lot of mayhem so you just needed to survive it somewhat, which we did. We’re still in a great place and still digging deep. We’ll see what we can do in the last three races.”

    ED CARPENTER RACING

CONOR DALY, NO. 20 BITNILE CHEVROLET, FINISHED 17TH:

“We were taking advantage of everything that we needed to. We had a good start, got a couple of spots, cycled forward, avoided accidents. But we just got hit really, really hard in the rear region of the car and broke the gearbox. Jack Harvey hit me, but he didn’t have anywhere to go either. It’s hard, if I go any deeper into that corner, I hit the two guys in front of me. We were just an innocent victim. The BitNile guys did an incredible job getting us back out there. We picked up a lot of positions as the race when on, due to even more chaos. Again, not where we wanted to be but we salvaged what we could.”

RINUS VEEKEY, NO, 21 BITCOIN RACING WITH BITNILE CHEVROLET, FINISHED 12TH:

Well, well, well. Things that do not go together: oil and water and Rinus VeeKay and luck! Really, to begin with, I had an amazing race. I was passing people and really enjoying driving out there. I was actually ahead of the whole podium. It was going pretty good until I severely locked my brakes in Turn 9 and lost a bit. Then in the pits, lost a few positions, no biggie. Got them back! Then Graham Rahal, who is many, many laps down, went to inspect the wall and I couldn’t avoid him. I lost a lap there and just had to hang back. But ended up P12, not bad. All things considered: drove like a champion…finished 12th.

    ARROW MCLAREN SP

PATO O’WARD, NO.5 ARROW MCLAREN SP CHEVROLET, FINISHED 24TH: “I don’t know who caused the check-up. I saw a car slowing down so I had to get on brakes. If not then what Graham did to me, I was going to do to Will. Sadly there’s only one way to look at it. It was a big enough hit to break probably a gear or something in the gearbox. When you hit the attenuator with a pretty solid hit, that’s usually what happens. I couldn’t get it into any gear. And yes… that’s our day.”

FELIX ROSENQVIST, NO. 7 ARROW MCLAREN SP CHEVROLET, FINISHED SEVENTH:

“It was a crazy race. I think last year was crazy, but this one was even crazier. I didn’t even know what was happening.

“I just tried to have good restarts – there was probably six or seven restarts in the race. It was weird because everyone went way too early and then everyone hit the brakes. It seemed like everyone was going wide into Turn 9 so there were times where you made a bunch of spots and times when you lost a bunch. Honestly, it was like a flip of a coin or roulette going into that one.

“The No. 7 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet was really quick. I think we had a quicker car than where we finished. These days, you’re happy to just finish, honestly. There’s so much going on and I think the car is banged up on all four corners. But, a good job to everyone on the No. 7 crew and we’ll keep pushing.”

    AJ FOYT RACING

DALTON KELLETT, NO. 4 K-LINE CHEVROLET, FINISHED 25TH: “Not the way we wanted the weekend to end here in Nashville after our best qualifying so far in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. We’re definitely leaving and taking the positives away from this weekend that we can with a good qualifying performance. We made some good strategy calls there… it was a good confidence boost for the team and myself as well. I’m looking forward to taking that into the remaining road courses. Next up we have Gateway, and that was a good race for us last year. We have a test there next week and hopefully that goes well. As far as today’s went, we just got caught up… in a pile-up in that back part of the track. There was really nowhere to go. I got into the back of Dixon and then got hit from behind. There’s a sensor on the back of the gearbox, and if that gets broken off you can’t shift. That’s basically what happened to us.”

KYLE KIRKWOOD, NO. 14 SEXTON PROPERTIES CHEVROLET, FINISHED 20TH:

“I mean honestly a fantastic race overall up until the lap that it ended for us. Fantastic strategy by the team cycled us up into what I think was P4 for on strategy or p3 on strategy and it was really close to even being further up like that than that. So I mean, we cycled back a few spots after some other people got lucky on a caution but then boom right away, we’re back into a hunting for when seemed like a podium and looking at the end of the race there. We were right behind Scott McLaughlin and he was fighting for the for the win at the end of the race, and that’s where I felt like we should have been so I was pushing everything I had. David Malukas was probably about a second off the pace, and I went to pass him and I just don’t think he saw me going through the lunge on the inside of turn nine. I did the same move on Simon Pagenaud and he was aware of the situation, but I guess I’ve got to look into it more, but that was just unfortunate. We were pushing super hard to try and get a podium because that’s what I think this team deserves at the moment.”

    JUNCOS HOLLIGER RACING

CALLUM ILOTT, NO.77 JUNCOS HOLLINGER RACING CHEVROLET, FINISHED 15TH:

“That was a disaster in one way, but we finished P15 in the end somehow,” said Ilott. “We had an incident early on in Turn-6, where they pilled up. I had the clutch in, but for some reason it stalled. It took a minute for them to restart me, which they did get me restarted, but it was a bit frustrating. Once we got going, I was in the middle of the pack, and I think I got a touch from Felix (Rosenqvist) which gave me a puncture into Turn-9 and then had another big whack and then I touched with (Alexander) Rossi. I couldn’t turn and I thought the car was down and brought it back in. At this point we were four laps down, but where able to get back on track. The pace was good, but what a weird race. I’m glad to get a little rest now because that was a long couple of weeks. Thank you to everyone who watched and thank you to Juncos Hollinger Racing for supporting me and getting me through this weekend and getting me to the end to get those points. We beat a lot of guys who I needed to get points on, so hopefully we can make a few more positions during the final races left in the championship.”

    PARETTA AUTOSPORT

SIMONA DE SILVESTRO, NO. 16 ACUMATICA CHEVROLET, FINISHED 26TH:

“It was bit of a difficult day. We struggled with pace in general and then had the accident. I was trying to be out of trouble and got sandwiched when the track was blocked in turn nine. It was definitely a matter of wrong place at the wrong time. Life goes on and sometimes street racing is like that. You can get mixed into something not great and other times you can get a bit lucky. Lots of things to think about when we race back on a street course. I’m excited to head to Laguna. I wish we walked out of here with a good result, but I’m really looking forward to Laguna and hoping to have a good ending to the season there.”
