Pagenaud Charges Through Field for Seventh Place Finish for MSR

Castroneves finishes 17th on street of Toronto

Toronto, Ontario (17 July 2022) – Simon Pagenaud led Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) with a seventh-place finish in Sunday’s Honda Indy Toronto, the 10th NTT INDYCAR SERIES race of the season.

Helio Castroneves’ alternate strategy unfortunately did not yield the desired result for the 15-time Toronto race entrant with the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda finishing 17th.

As the winner in the most recent Exhibition Place circuit in 2019, Pagenaud qualified 18th in the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda and worked his way through the field to take his sixth top-10 finish of the 2022 season.

With the MSR team working to secure the rear of the No. 60 Honda overnight, Pagenaud was confident heading into the 85-lap event. Opting for an undercut strategy to advance through the field, Pagenaud made an early dash into the pits on lap 11. Quick work by the team sent Pagenaud back into the fray which say him work his way up to 10th by lap 33.

The Frenchman was running eighth when the second caution waved on lap 45 and the MSR team was able to preserve that position during his final pit stop two laps later.

Pagenaud was up to sixth on the fourth restart with 19 laps remaining. Pagenaud made a pass to briefly take fifth, but was bumped out of the way by a competitor that cost him three positions. With plenty of time left on the clock Pagenaud managed to retake seventh, and held that position to the finish.

Castroneves qualified 17th at the wheel of the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda and the MSR crew elected to go for an overcut strategy, starting on the alternate (red) tires. Castroneves was pacing the field and showed strong momentum as he took advantage of an open track as cars began to pit.

Running third when he pitted for his first stop on lap 19, Castroneves returned to the race in 23rd. It was an uphill battle the rest of the way as Castroneves got up to 16th by lap 60 with an exciting battle ensuing with the No. 12 car, but lost a position on the final restart saw him finished 17th.

MSR has a short turnaround before a double-duty weekend at Iowa Speedway, running the Hy-Veedeals.com 250 on Saturday, July 23, followed by Sunday’s Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300 on the banked 0.875-mile oval.

    Driver Quotes:

    Simon Pagenaud:

“Awesome recovery today to finish P7. Great race, amazing strategy from the stand and Mike Shank. I’m so proud of the team for great pit stops today to get us back in contention. Toronto is usually madness, and I feel like we extracted the best out of what we could do today. P7 in the end with a great race car, and I feel the momentum of the team. I’m very excited for the races coming up with a race every weekend for the next three weeks, and looking to do very well at Iowa next week.”

    Helio Castroneves:

“We started well and we were conservative, then we lost a few positions, gained a few positions, so it was kind of insane. Then strategy started to play a factor when people started pitting early. We got stuck behind one of the cars, but as soon as we got a clear lap, we went for it. On a pit exchange, we ended up back in the same place, which is a shame because the car was actually decent. Then it was myself and Will (Power) and it felt like a rivalry from back in the day which was fun but he wasn’t making it easy. We lost a couple of spots because of that and the rear started going away, but the car was feeling good. At the end of the day, we had a good pace, but it wasn’t for us. At least, Simon showed what the MSR car’s could do by finishing in the top 10, which is great. Now, let’s go for Iowa.”

Herta Becomes First Double NTT P1 Award Winner This Season

TORONTO (Saturday, July 16, 2022) – Colton Herta became the first two-time pole winner this season in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, earning the NTT P1 Award for the Honda Indy Toronto on Saturday.

Herta’s top time was 59.2698 seconds on his last flying lap in the No. 26 Gainbridge Honda, as he added this pole to his No. 1 spot at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach in April. The first nine races of this season featured a different pole winner, and Herta was happy to spoil a chance for the INDYCAR SERIES to tie a record of 10 different pole winners to start a season set in 1952.

    SEE: Qualifying Results

“That was an intense session,” Herta said. “We hadn’t really found that time until right at the end. I was really happy with that lap. It all kind of came together. The car was working brilliantly. You don’t see that usually, guys going faster on the used reds (alternate Firestone tires) instead of the new. Something to think about for tomorrow, but I’m happy with my Gainbridge Honda.”

The 85-lap race is scheduled for Sunday. Live, exclusive coverage of the race starts at 3 p.m. (ET) on Peacock Premium – with limited commercial interruptions – and the INDYCAR Radio Network. Both outlets also will cover live the morning warmup session at 10:55 a.m.

Six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Scott Dixon will join Herta – who also led the morning practice – on the front row after a best qualifying lap of 59.3592 in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. It was the best non-oval qualifying performance this season for Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge pole winner Dixon, whose previous best road/street qualifying effort was fifth at the last race, The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the All-New 2023 Civic Type R on July 3 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Two-time series champion Josef Newgarden, who leads the series this season with three wins, qualified third at 59.5257 in the No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet. He will share Row 2 with Alexander Rossi, who qualified fourth at 59.5544 in the No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS/AutoNation Honda.

David Malukas was the top-qualifying rookie with a career-best starting spot of fifth after a lap of 59.6140 in the No. 18 HMD Honda. Scott McLaughlin rounded out the Firestone Fast Six at 59.9558 in the No. 3 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet.

NTT P1 Award qualifying provided a mixed bag of results for contenders for the Astor Challenge Cup as series champion on the 11-turn, 1.786-mile temporary circuit on the streets of Exhibition Place in Canada’s largest city.

Points leader and 2021 Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge winner Marcus Ericsson qualified ninth in the No. 8 Huski Chocolate Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

Ericsson’s closest pursuer, 2014 series champion Will Power, endured a third consecutive event with a frustrating qualifying result. He will start 16th in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet after his final hot lap in the first qualifying session was halted when Kyle Kirkwood crashed his No. 14 Sexton Properties Chevrolet in Turn 8, triggering a red flag and ending the group’s session.

Power has qualified 15th or lower in the last three road course races on the schedule yet has rallied to finish first and third in two of them, at Belle Isle and Mid-Ohio, respectively.

“I should know that you must stay in the top six every time because this can happen,” Power said of losing his lap to Kirkwood’s incident. “I had a really fast car again. It is crazy. That’s three races in a row we’ve been like P2 in practice before qualifying and then between 15th and 19th. Frustrating, man. Frustrating. I got to Turn 6 and was up four-tenths. That would have got us through.”

Newgarden, third in points, is in good shape to possibly gain ground on Ericsson and Power with the third starting spot Sunday.

But the next two drivers in the standings, fourth-place Alex Palou and fifth-place Pato O’Ward, have a lot of work to do.

Reigning series champion Palou slowed on track and stopped in his qualifying group in the first session and will start 22nd in the 25-car field in the No. 10 NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. O’Ward clipped the wall with his No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet during his first group, didn’t advance and will start 15th.

There was bright spot for the enthusiastic crowd of Canadian fans, back in droves under sunny skies after this event was put on hold in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Toronto area native and series rookie Devlin DeFrancesco qualified a career-best 12th in the No. 29 PowerTap Honda.

Two-time winner at Exhibition Place to start third; McLaughlin qualifies sixth

TORONTO (July 16, 2022) – Two-time Toronto winner Josef Newgarden qualified third to lead the 10-car Team Chevy contingent for the 85-lap Honda Indy Toronto on July 17.

Newgarden recorded a best lap of 59.5257 seconds in the No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet on the 1.786-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit in the Firestone Fast Six. Newgarden won in 2017 from the seventh starting position and in 2015 from 11th.

Newgarden, making his fourth appearance in the Firestone Fast Six in 10 NTT INDYCAR SERIES races, recorded the stellar lap on the bumpy circuit after an engine change following the morning practice session.

“It was it was a good recovery from our crew. Really fast after that second session and the car was great,” he said. “I felt on that Fast Six lap that we were on a good one, a really good one. And then I ended up messing up at Turn 6. I overcooked the entry, tried to recover all of it on the exit, ended up touching the wall. And then it was kind of unraveled at that point.

“Really pleased with these guys. They did an amazing job. And so with Hitachi and Team Chevy, I think we’ve got something to fight with tomorrow.”

Teammate Scott McLaughlin, making his first appearance in Toronto, qualified sixth in the XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet with a lap of 59.9558 seconds.

“Awesome first qualifying session here in Toronto for XPEL Team Penske Chevy, and to qualify in the Fast Six at a new track is a lot better than I did at new tracks last year so I’ve very proud of that,” said McLaughlin, the 2021 INDYCAR Rookie of the Year. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow and think we can win the race from there.”

Colton Herta earned the NTT Pole Award in his Andretti Autosport Honda – the first repeat pole winner this season.

First-year driver Callum Ilott tied his best qualifying effort and will start seventh in the No. 77 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet. Felix Rosenqvist, driving the No. 7 Circle K Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet, qualified eighth.

Live coverage of the race starts at 3 p.m. ET on Peacock Premium. The race will also be broadcast on INDYCAR Radio Network affiliates, SiriusXM 160 and the INDYCAR app.

    TEAM CHEVY QUOTES

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 2 HITACHI CHEVROLET, TEAM PENSKE – QUALIFIED THIRD: “It was a good recovery from our crew. They put a whole new engine in this thing really fast after that second session and the car was great. I felt on that Fast Six lap that we were on a good one, a really good one. And then I ended up messing up at Turn 6. I overcooked the entry, tried to recover all of it on the exit, ended up touching the wall. And then it was kind of unraveled at that point. Really pleased with these guys. They did an amazing job. And so with Hitachi and Team Chevy, I think we’ve got something to fight with tomorrow. I’m really encouraged by that.”

Not to have the full practice to is that concerning at all? Do you feel like you guys are where you need to be as far as knowing what you need for the race tomorrow?

“I think all we sacrificed was Q running really and understanding what was going to happen right now. So, you know, I don’t think we’re behind to the race necessarily.”

SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN, NO. 3 XPEL CHEVROLET, TEAM PENSKE – QUALIFIED SIXTH: “Awesome first qualifying session here in Toronto for XP Team Penske Chevy, and to qualify in the Fast 6 at a new track is a lot better than I did at new tracks last year so I’ve very proud of that. We’ve made some gains since 2021 and continue to gain with the team and car. I’m looking forward to tomorrow and think we can win the race from there.”

CALLUM ILOTT, NO. 77 JUNCOS HOLLINGER RACING CHEVROLET – QUALIFIED SEVENTH: “P7, pretty happy with that. We ended up doing the time on used red tires. I think the only one on used tires, so that was pretty impressive. Good car, progressing through the weekend. Kept improving, kept finding little bits in my driving as well. I’ve had to guess and find the areas to improve because I don’t have a teammate and don’t have anything to look at but myself in the mirror. Great job by the team, great job by Chevy.”

FELIX ROSEQVIST, NO. 7 CIRCLE K CHEVROLET, ARROW MCLAREN SP – QUALIFIED EIGHTH: “We’ve been competitive in every session here in Toronto. Normally we’re a bit stronger in qualifying but the No. 7 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet felt good. There weren’t any mistakes, but I was a tenth away from the Firestone Fast Six. It’s a shame because I had a set of fresh Firestone reds waiting for the Fast Six when we took that gamble in Q1. Sometimes you’re in the window and sometimes you’re a bit out, but I think it’s been good so far and we can do some good damage from P8.”

PATO O’WARD, NO. 5 ARROW CHEVROLET, ARROW MCLAREN SP – QUALIFIED 15TH: “I have to say, we did what we could. We need to continue working and see what we can make better for the race. It’s going to be an interesting race day; it’s a tough track. We haven’t been in the window all weekend so we have a lot of ground to make up tomorrow.”

WILL POWER, NO. 12 VERIZON CHEVROLET, TEAM PENSKE – QUALIFIED 16TH: “I should know that you must make it in the top six every time because this can happen. I had a really fast car again and it is crazy that three races in a row we’ve been like P2 in practice before qualifying and then between 15 and 19, 20. It’s frustrating. Obviously, this isn’t a great race to come from the back and it’s unfortunate we are gonna go to have to do it again. It’s definitely a track that can create a lot of mayhem so who knows.”

RINUS VEEKAY, NO. 21 BITCOIN WITH BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING – QUALIFIED 20TH: “We could barely get a lap in. Once the tires got warm, I only got in one solid lap on the blacks and then there was a red flag. With time for only one lap on reds and the tires still cold, I actually improved my time and I was happy about that. But then, someone spun, there was another red and I got my fast lap taken away. Tomorrow is a long race, there’s a lot we can do with strategy and I do think we a have a good racecar. I love passing people, so hopefully I can do a lot of that.”

DALTON KELLETT, NO. 4 K-LINE INSULATORS USA CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING – QUALIFIED 23RD: “Definitely a tough session for us. Didn’t really get out of the pit box; looks like we had a failure somewhere in the fuel delivery system. One of the high-pressure pumps from the collector in the fuel cell wasn’t pumping fuel to the rail for our Chevy V6 so we weren’t able to get power so that was basically it. It is disappointing for us for the hometown race, obviously wanted a good qualifying performance to start further up on the grid and make our lives a little easier for Sunday, but obviously that wasn’t to be. We’ll just have to figure out what went wrong and make everything right for tomorrow. We’ll see what we have in warmup and go out and have a good race.”

KYLE KIRKWOOD, NO. 14 SEXTON PROPERTIES CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING – QUALIFIED 24TH: “Unfortunately, we didn’t transfer to the Fast 12 today. We had a lap to do it and I just unfortunately brushed the wall out of turn six, which caused a rear left toe link to break and then we went to turn eight with the tire pointing the wrong direction. So super unfortunate, but we know we have fast car we were quick early on — on both sets of tires — we just didn’t get the lap there at the end.”

CONOR DALY, NO. 20 BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING – QUALIFIED 25TH: “Qualifying was a bit of a disaster, but really through no fault of our own. There were cars that were stopped in front of me at the beginning of the session, I’m not sure who decided to use half of the track as a gapping area. It meant that I got backed up into Colton (Herta), which I then got penalized for. That was a shame because it was the first lap out there, which was never going to be his fastest anyway. Then we had the red flag, which stopped our session. It literally could not have gone worse, which means tomorrow is going to be great.”

Rossi Tops in Toronto as NTT INDYCAR SERIES Back in Canada

TORONTO (Friday, July 15, 2022) – Alexander Rossi was the fastest driver in the first laps turned by the NTT INDYCAR SERIES on the streets of Toronto in three years, pacing the first practice Friday for the Honda Indy Toronto.

Rossi turned a top lap of 1 minute, 0.6090 seconds in the No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS/AutoNation Honda on the 11-turn, 1.786-mile temporary street circuit around Exhibition Place in Canada’s largest city. This annual event was put on hold for 2020 and 2021 due to restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2016 series champion Simon Pagenaud ended up second, less than a tenth of a second behind fellow Indianapolis 500 winner Rossi. Pagenaud’s best lap in the No. 60 AutoNation/SiriusXM Honda was 1:00.6991. Pagenaud was the last winner of the Honda Indy Toronto, in 2019.

“We still have some work to do,” Pagenaud said. “I would like to take the car to another level. That lap took a lot of energy out of me. We have to figure out how to improve the rear end, mostly.

“I love this track. This section in front of the pits is just … for a driver, you need precision, and you have to be on it and so intense. It’s a lot of fun.”

Graham Rahal ended up third at 1:00.7031 in the No. 15 United Rentals Honda, a bright spot in a tough season so far marked by a best finish of seventh.

“After the Sebring test, I thought it would translate OK to here,” Rahal said. “The setup that we went there and came out of there with is what we started here. She was quite good from the get-go. To see the guys smiling again is very rewarding.”

NTT INDYCAR SERIES points leader Marcus Ericsson was fourth at 1:00.7262 in the No. 8 Huski Chocolate Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Two-time series champion and two-time Toronto winner Josef Newgarden rounded out the top five and was the quickest Chevrolet-powered driver at 1:00.7650 in the No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet.

Three drivers – rookie Callum Ilott and veterans Jimmie Johnson and Helio Castroneves – made light contact with the concrete barriers lining the circuit during practice. Their cars suffered minor damage, and all three drivers were unhurt.

Still, the 75-minute session was remarkably clean and competitive considering only 12 of the 25 drivers competing this weekend have raced in an INDYCAR SERIES event on this tight, challenging circuit that features varying grip levels due to different pavement surfaces. Less than one second separated the top 17 drivers in practice today.

Practice will continue at 10 a.m. (ET) Saturday, followed by three rounds of NTT P1 Award qualifying at 2 p.m. Peacock Premium and the INDYCAR Radio Network will provide live coverage of both sessions.

A warmup session and the 85-lap race are scheduled for Sunday. Live, exclusive coverage of the race starts at 3 p.m. on Peacock Premium – with limited commercial interruptions – and the INDYCAR Radio Network.

Team Chevy Aims to Continue Perfect Run at INDYCAR Street Events
Chevrolet-powered IndyCars go for fourth street win of season in Toronto return

DETROIT (June 13, 2022) – For the first time in three years, Chevrolet and the rest of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES head north of the border as the series returns to Exhibition Place for the Honda Indy Toronto street race.

The 1.786-mile, 11-turn circuit hasn’t played host to INDYCAR since the 2019 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Chevy power from its 2.2-liter, twin-turbo V6 won that race – one of seven for Chevrolet in Toronto – and the goal is to return the Bowtie to victory circle again on its Canadian return.

“We’re all excited to return to Toronto,” said Rob Buckner, Chevrolet Program Manager for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. “Racing in front of the Canadian fans is a great experience. They’re incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the sport, which makes it even more special to go back. We’ve had a strong history at Toronto with a number of wins, poles and fast race laps. That and our level of success on street circuits this year bodes well for the chances of our Chevrolet teams to add to the tally this weekend.

“As at any street race, execution and strategy are key. Qualifying and track position will play huge roles in the outcome of the race. We’re ready to go all-out and help our teams start up front and stay there come Sunday.”

Chevrolet is a perfect three-for-three in street events this season with Toronto and Nashville still to go. It started with Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin winning his first INDYCAR race at St. Petersburg to open the season. Penske teammate Josef Newgarden followed at Long Beach a few weeks later, and Will Power scored another victory for Chevrolet and Team Penske at Belle Isle in early June.

Seven wins in 10 Toronto races since 2012 gives Team Chevy great vibes for its Canadian return. Newgarden, this year driving the No. 2 PPG Chevrolet for Team Penske and second in points, is a two-time winner with victories in 2015 for CFH Racing and in 2017 for Penske. He also was the fastest qualifier in 2018.

Teammate Will Power, driver of the No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet and second in points, won in 2016 at Toronto under the Penske banner and sat on pole position in 2015 – one of seven for Team Chevy at Toronto. That year saw a remarkable performance from Chevrolet, which claimed the top eight positions at the end of the race.

Team Chevy also swept the podium in a Toronto doubleheader in 2014.

Chevrolet and the NTT INDYCAR Series resume the 2022 season with the Honda Indy Toronto at the Exhibition Place street circuit. The race starts at 3:15 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 17 and will stream live on Peacock at 3 p.m. ET. IndyCar Radio coverage on SiriusXM IndyCar Nation (Channel 160) also begins at 3 p.m. ET. Live timing and scoring will be available at racecontrol.indycar.com.

    TEAM CHEVY QUOTES

DALTON KELLETT, NO. 4 K-LINE CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING: “I’m most looking forward to the opportunity to race IndyCar in front of the hometown crowd. The Toronto Indy is one of the best street circuits we race on and I can’t wait to experience it in this car. I think the fans and the city are very excited to have us back, it should be a great turn out. It’s a very bumpy track with lots of pavement transitions, so you have to tune the suspension and dampers to handle those well. You don’t want to bottom out excessively, but also can’t sacrifice too much ride height. A big part of the challenge is knowing how much bumpiness and movement from the car that you’ll just have to accept as a characteristic of the track versus what needs to be tuned out to get the mechanical grip you need.”

PATO O’WARD, NO. 5 ARROW McLAREN CHEVROLET, ARROW McLAREN SP: “I haven’t been to Toronto in a couple years so I am excited to go back. I love the atmosphere, the fans are always great and the city is fantastic. It’s a perfect time to have an INDYCAR race, as it starts an important section of the championship. I’m looking forward to working with the No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP team and having a good race.”

FELIX ROSEQVIST, NO. 7 VUSE CHEVROLET, ARROW McLAREN SP: “I am really excited to be back in Toronto. I think it’s one of those great cities in the world that we all enjoy coming to. Personally, it’s always been a good track for me. I’ve had some really good memories in Toronto in junior categories and also in INDYCAR where I drove here last in 2019. It doesn’t mean we can arrive relaxed. We’re obviously working really hard to get an edge on the other teams, especially after not being there in two years, so rolling out strong is going to be key. I think the prep work is going to be the important thing, then execute and try to have a good race after a difficult one last round in Mid-Ohio.”

WILL POWER, NO. 12 VERIZON CHEVROLET, TEAM PENSKE: “The track is just difficult because there’s so many different levels of grip. Like, you never feel in the track, on top of the track, it’s sliding. The car never handles well. It’s kind of difficult to tell your engineer what to do because there’s so much compromise. Maybe it’s a track that it’s easy to make a mistake on. That’s why maybe veterans or people being around a bit longer don’t end up making mistakes. That might be the reason that you’ve seen champions win. Yeah, it’s a tough track. A lot of mayhem can happen there, a lot of mayhem.”

KYLE KIRKWOOD, NO. 14 ROKiT CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING: “It’s great that we are able to get back on the streets of Toronto. Given this year’s trend, I am always looking forward to the street courses. Toronto is a track that I personally have a lot of experience at and can’t wait to see what it feels like in the Indy car. I believe we’ll have a shot of redeeming ourselves from Detroit where we should have finished easily in the top 10.”

CONOR DALY, NO. 20 BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING: “It’s always wonderful going back to Toronto! It’s a great track and Canadian race fans are so passionate and really just incredible people. It’s been far too many years since INDYCAR has been there. I’ve not raced there for even longer, so I am very much looking forward to getting back on track and continuing our strong season. ECR has done well there in the past so I am very excited and hopefully we will leave with more trophies!”

RINUS VEEKAY, NO. 21 BITCOIN WITH BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING: “I am very excited for my first Indy car race in Toronto! I had a few wins there in my Road to Indy career and I always loved the track. In the past, ECR has had quite a few good results at Toronto as well so I can’t wait to see how we do at that track! I think we will have a great car and I hope to go for a podium or a win!”

CHEVROLET RACING ZOOM TRANSCRIPT: Power previews Toronto

Will Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, met with the media via Zoom conference to preview the NTT INDYCAR SERIES race July 17 in Toronto. Power, who advanced 18 spots from his starting position to finish third July 3 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, is a three-time winner and two-time pole sitter on the 1.78-mile, 11-turn Toronto street circuit.

    Full transcript:

HOW MUCH ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING BACK TO TORONTO?

“Yeah, very much so. I love the city there, and the track is very unique. Really isn’t a track that we go to that’s like that. It’s near impossible to get a good balance in the car, so it’s a lot of compromise. Feel like it’s a real driver’s track. It’s pretty hard.”

LOOKING BACK AT YOUR MID-OHIO DRIVE – A CHAMPIOSHIP-SAVING DRIVE MAYBE. HOW BIG WAS THAT WEEKEND FOR YOU?

“It was a very good recovery. I would say we had a car that, I feel like, could definitely challenge for pole. It was unfortunate what happened. Our fault. We weren’t on top of that. We should have been. Obviously, the strategy and the car was great in the race. Yep, did not expect to make it all the way back to third, but I knew our car was strong. With yellows and restarts, good pit stop sequence, we were able to make our way all the way up to a podium. I was hoping at the beginning of that day for a top 10. I said that a few times this year, like at Detroit, like at Barber, but we’ve made it much further. Definitely showing my race craft ability with all these bad qualifyings, which I haven’t been able to do for most of my career because I’ve always qualified right up at the front. Plus, you learn when you’re back there, as well, when you’re in the mix of stuff.”

YOUR TEAMMATES HAVE WON MULTIPLE RACES. WHAT DO YOU SEE THE REASON FOR WHY THE ENTIRE TEAM IS BETTER?

“The tire changed a little bit. Basically, the Firestone tires that we were running last year had sat around a lot, so the tire was obviously hardening over time. I think the tire’s simply better this year, which brought our cars into a better place for where we live. We also did a lot of development in the off-season. I actually feel like last year we had bad luck. I wouldn’t call it luck, but just strange things happened when we had cars in position to win and such. Yeah, last year wasn’t as bad as it looked on performance. It was just one of those years that was just a little bit messy and things didn’t flow our way. Newgarden should have won Road America. I should have won in Detroit. We should have challenging for the win in Laguna. It’s just races like that that kind of made it look worse. Yes, we’re certainly firing on all cylinders this year.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE ALEX PALOU, MCLAREN, CHIP GANASSI SITUATION?

“I’ve heard rumors around the paddock of exactly what’s transpiring right now. Yeah, it’s kind of good for the series really to have a bit of action in the paddock. Yeah, obviously I don’t know the details of everything that has gone on there. Yeah, it’s going to be interesting to see how that whole things plays out.”

DOESN’T IT ALSO CREATE A HUGE DISTRACTION ON THAT TEAM AS THEY’RE TRYING TO BATTLE FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP?

“Well, I think that’s been a distraction all year for those guys because this whole thing has been going on behind the scenes. Yeah, not ideal if you’re fighting for a championship within a team. Definitely not ideal.”

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE IN YOUR CAREER IN INDYCAR?

“I have not seen this in INDYCAR. I mean, this sort of thing goes on obviously all the time, various businesses. It’s just one of those things where it’s going to come down to the wording in the contract simply.”

HOW DISTRACTING CAN CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS BE FOR A DRIVER MID-SEASON?

“It can make some drivers perform better and some perform worse. Yeah, some need that sort of pressure to bring the best out of them, and some don’t do well under those situations. Ideally, I think you want everything settled and you want pretty good vibes in the team. But it totally depends on the individual.”

THERE’S BEEN NINE DIFFERENT POLE SITTERS SO FAR. WHY DO YOU THINK QUALIFYING HAS BEEN SO UP IN THE AIR THIS SEASON?

“Simply because it’s so competitive. There is no one that is dominating, no one stands out. You can try to pick the polesitter for this weekend. You simply couldn’t. Even the drivers, you couldn’t pick who might be on pole, which to me is a great thing.”

WHICH DRIVE WAS MORE IMPRESSIVE FOR YOU – MID-OHIO OR DETROIT?

“I think Mid-Ohio, coming from the very back, having spun, to get to the podium was definitely, yep. Tires weren’t a big deal there. Like reds and blacks were pretty similar over a stint. Yeah, that’s a great job from the team overall with strategy and staying in the game, and also for me to keep my head, slowly chip away at it.”

YOUR TEAM HAS WON SIX OF THE NINE RACES. CAN YOU DESCRIBE THE CONFIDENCE YOU GUYS ARE WALKING IN WITH EVERY WEEK?

“I’ve always had that confidence being in that team, that you will turn up to a weekend with a chance to win. That’s always kind of been my feeling. Like, I never walked into a weekend thinking, Man, we’ve got no chance. When you start having good runs on the board, you’re right there in the points, it does give you confidence. You’re obviously feeling good about the situation. You’re not feeling like you have to do anything desperate, you’re just having to execute. You’re sitting in that sweet spot of performance.”

YOU SAID AFTER MID-OHIO THAT YOUR PARENTS HAVE NEVER BEEN HERE FOR A WIN. IS THAT LEGITIMATE OTHER THAN THE TIME YOU WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP IN ’14?

“Yeah, my mother was at the championship when I won in ’14. But, yes, my parents haven’t been to a race for years. I can’t remember the last time my dad came. Might be 2009 or something. No? ’11 was the last time my dad came to a race. Yeah, they haven’t really seen much of on-track action. My brother has come twice. ’18 when I won the 500, then on to Detroit when I won Detroit. I have two other brothers as well that have never been to a race.”

YOU’RE IN THE TITLE FIGHT WITH EIGHT RACES LEFT. ANY DISCUSSIONS OF THEM COMING OVER HERE, BEING HERE BY MONTERREY?

“No, they won’t come. I don’t know that for sure. My wife might surprise me. I doubt it. I doubt I’ll see my parents. I doubt it, yeah. I don’t think they’ll come.”

A LOT OF ROOKIES AT TORONTO THIS WEEKEND. THIS WILL BE YOUR 14TH START. IS THAT AN ADVANTAGE OR DOES THE AEROSCREEN KIND OF NEGATE EVERYTHING?

“I think it will be different. The tire’s probably a little different. It’s so tight these years. The little tiny things do make a big difference. Yeah, the field is so good now, there’s so many good drivers, it really doesn’t matter if someone has been there or not because they seem to get up to speed so quickly. Yeah, you can’t feel like you ever have an advantage in this game.”

THERE’S A GOOD SHOT WE COULD BE COMING TO INDY IN A COUPLE WEEKS AND YOU THREE PENSKE GUYS ARE FIGHTHING FOR A TITLE. IS IT A TOUGH ACT TO BALANCE WORKING WITH A TEAMMATE, FIGHTING THAT SAME TEAMMATE FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP?

“It is a very tough balance. To me, the most awkward thing about motorsport is that you have a teammate, and you’re absolutely compared off your teammates, you have the same equipment. Very tough balance. But Penske, I don’t think Penske would ever allow it to get to the point where we’re having big issues with each other on track. We understand that. We understand that it’s about the team and not about the drivers. You never put yourself first. You work hard, you work together off the track. Obviously we’re kind of separate teams on the track. I have to say with both Scott and Josef, it’s been very good as far as the information that we share. Like, they are both super quick. It has helped me a lot. That’s to me an advantage.”

IT SEEMS LIKE STREET COURSES COULD GO EITHER WAY AS FAR AS QUALIFYING POSITION. TORONTO SEEMS TO FAVOR STARTING POSITION MORE. IS STARTING POSITION GOING TO MEAN A LOT THIS WEEKEND?

“It looks like that way just reviewing the race. I’ve thought that a few times this year. Obviously tracks I feel like are tough to pass. We’ve actually made some hay. Like who knows, it could be a straightforward race, it can be pretty green, not much chance to make passes. But INDYCAR at the moment is so competitive that who knows. Like, at the end of the day you can never give up. Don’t be too down in the mouth if you don’t qualify well. But it matters, though. Qualifying up front, if you execute well, you’re certainly going to finish up front.”

WHAT MAKES TORONTO SO DIFFICULT, AND WHY IS THAT THAT THE GUYS THAT ARE CHAMPIONS OF THE SPORT ALWAYS SEEM TO PERFORM WELL THERE?

“The track is just difficult because there’s so many different levels of grip. That might be the reason that you’ve seen champions win.”

YOU TALKED ABOUT HOW YOUNG GUYS CAN SHOW UP AT TRACKS AND BE ON THEIR A GAME. IS PART OF THAT BECAUSE OF SIM WORK – THEY’RE MORE PREPARED?

“Definitely simulator work. You know the braking points, you know the gears, you know the track. You don’t know the track condition. But, yeah, that’s a pretty big chunk of time you cut off trying to understand where a track goes by being on a sim the week before. That is a big, big help. Obviously video these days, so much on-board footage, there’s so much information to take in before you get there. You turn up, you’re going out first session knowing the track.”

A LOT OF DRIVERS PERFORM WORSE AFTER A MISTAKE, BUT YOU SHOWED THE OPPOSITE AT MID-OHIO. DO YOU THINK MISTAKES CAN MAKE YOU MORE POWERFUL ON TRACK?

“Yeah, honestly after I spun, I just gathered it up and didn’t really reflect on it, and just started passing people. Obviously it’s not even on your mind when you get to that point. Then you just start progressing, doing your job. I think that’s the only mentality you can have. I think the mistake people might make, I’ve made in the past, you get desperate. Oh, my God, I’m at the back, I made a mistake. That is right there, the mindset, that will make you have a worse race. I wasn’t even upset or mad. It’s like, OK, how do I keep going? Don’t stall the car. Got right back into it. Didn’t even think about it. The sooner you can get over that stuff, the better. You can’t be thinking about it three laps later. You have to keep chipping away. Still at that point in your mind every single point matters, so every position does matter. Maybe that’s your bad day that you spun. It’s your bad day. But every point matters here. That’s kind of the mentality I had at Indy when I went back to pretty much last in the first stint. I was like, This is double points, every position I get matters at the end of the year. That was the mentality. You’re not going to win every race, so it’s just getting the most out of every situation. That’s really what I have been doing this year.”

WERE YOU SATISFIED ABOUT THAT PERFORMANCE? YOU WERE FRUSTRATED ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED?

“I was extremely happy about the finish. I was very, very happy with third. I couldn’t honestly believe that I made it to third. I was really, really happy. Just felt great for the team. It was a weekend that we had a lot of potential to win. But, like I said, you can’t win them all. You do have bad races. If you can come back from a mistake, that’s even better. Yeah, I was very, very happy with that day. Very happy.”

DO YOU SEE AUSTRALIA FOSTERING NEW TALENT TOWARD SINGLE-SEATER RACING, PARTICULARLY IN NORTH AMERICA?

“Yeah, I was really happy to see Hunter McElrea doing so good. I think he’s a super fast driver. Has definitely, definitely the potential to get to INDYCAR and do well. But, yeah, I don’t know what’s going on down in Australia so much these days. I haven’t been back there for a long time. I have to say, though, I’m sure Drive to Survive is helping just open-wheel motorsports in general. Like, I think go-karting is more popular now. I think all those series. I think it’s great. It’s giving open-wheel racing relevance. People understand the cars now. When they see an INDYCAR, they can identify, Oh, yeah, that’s just like a Formula 1 car. I think having Scott (McLaughlin) come over and do really well from Supercars, I think kids would see that and go, Maybe I want to go that route. If you do some Supercar driving, doesn’t mean you can’t come and race open-wheels. You’ve seen how well Scott adapted pretty quickly. Yeah, I would love to see more Australians over here. I think now Roger has taken the series over, the ladder system will get stronger. You already see there’s more Indy Lights cars. Hopefully more again next year. That’s what it needs, is a very good ladder system with three categories before INDYCAR. If you start doing more than that, it starts watering the three down. I hope that we can get three strong series together, massive fields. Yeah, it helps that ladder system.”

THERE’S A LOT OF NEW ZEALANDERS AND AUSTRALIANS THAT GO ON TO DEVELOPMENT SERIES WITH SUPERCARS. WHAT MCLAUGHLIN HAS DONE HELPS.

“What you have to look at, too, look at the past champions of Indy Lights. Not even champions, but guys that have competed first and second. Look at Pato O’Ward and Colton Herta. Those guys are testing Formula 1 right now. Who was last year’s champion? Kirkwood. I mean, if you go through that ladder system, you win on each rung of those ladders, you get money to go to the next series. There’s nothing like that anywhere else in the world. It’s a good place to go, it really is. It’s not as expensive as Europe. You are guaranteed to continue if you win. I think that’s a pretty good deal.”

THE CANADIAN FAN BASE LOKING FORWARD TO A RACE THERE. I’M SURE THAT WILLMAKE THE RAE THAT MUCH MORE EXCITING FOR YOU AS A DRIVER.

“Yeah, I think speaking to Kevin Savoree, he said ticket sales are really good. I think we’ll get a massive crowd. Always do. I think the Canadian fans are some of the best in the world. They love their sport. A real party atmosphere. Nothing better than racing in front of a big crowd. I expect it to be a pretty good event.”

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT TEAMING UP WITH YOUR BROTHER AND HAVING HIM GIVE HIS SHOWS SURROUNDING INDYCAR VENUES?

“No, obviously really enjoy him coming over because we share a similar sense of humor. Obviously enjoy his company massively. No, I’ve often thought about what we could do together after INDYCAR, on the comedy side of stuff because obviously he has a lot of contacts in Australia. Maybe we can do some sort of TV show or something. Yeah, haven’t ever really thought about him. He has talked about coming to the U.S. and doing gigs. I think he’d just have to follow what his management puts in place for him. Yeah, no, I would love him to live over here. That would be cool. I think he’s going to at some point pretty soon.”

TORONTO HAS VARYING GRIPS AND IT’S HARD TO PASS. IS THAT TROUBLE IF YOU DON’T START IN THE FIRST THIRD OF THE FIELD?

“Yeah, these days if you get in the top six, you’re pretty happy. You know you can do a lot from there. God, man, it’s so hard to predict the races. Like, it could go green. It could be a very straightforward race. I don’t think Toronto is all that difficult to pass. There are places to pass. You can pass. What’s happened is the field is so tough now, everyone is about the same speed in the race. That’s what makes it hard to pass. It’s not necessarily the track. I think Firestone has done a good job of making a big difference between blacks and reds. There’s another way that you can just switch up strategy and just be on a different tire than everyone else, different to the conventional strategies. Yeah, based on the three races I’ve had this year where I’ve come from way back, you would stress less about qualifying badly, just knowing if you keep your head you can definitely make hay. The points situation also changes the way you race a bit. You’re not in this ‘I have nothing to lose’ sort of mentality, so you do race a little differently because of that, as well.”

SEEING YOU ON TRACK THIS YEAR – VERY MATURE, A LOT OF FUN. YOURE’ JUST MAKING IT ROUGHER FOR EVERYONE ELSE.

“Everyone makes it tougher on each other. It’s a great group, great series. There’s nothing like it in the world, honestly. The disciplines you have to do, the competition, the different nationalities, it’s a pretty unique series.”

ANY CONCERN ON YOUR PART OR THE TEAM’S PART ON CHEVY RELIABILITY GOING FORWARD?

“Yeah, obviously always concerned when you see that. I will say that all the Chevys are switching out engines because they’re all up on mileage for this race. They are all on new engines. (Indiscernible) Indy 500 race engines. Chevy obviously does a big investigation into what happened. Usually a failure creates — it doesn’t happen twice, put it that way. I don’t know the findings of their investigation. I know one of them was not a Chevy issue.”

THE TEAM COMFORTABLE WITH THE SWAP-PUT, JUST FEELING NO ISSUES?

“No. No. I think we’re all pretty comfortable. We’ve had this engine for a long time. It’s been pretty reliable. Sometimes oddball things happen. They take care of it.”

HOW MUCH DO YOU SEE THE AEROSCREEN AFFECTING THE RACING IN TORONTO?

“Yeah, it definitely changed the car a lot because it moves the weight further forward. But I’ve actually found at Toronto, as the weight has gone forward, it’s really helped. On those really slippery cement patches, the actual weight downforce matters, so you get more weight force on the front tires, and it actually helps turn the car. That was a big problem when the car had really rearward weight, that the front tires would not work over that cement. Obviously at some point, when you have high grip, that weight matters laterally. But the grip is so low that the lateral — the actual weight downforce is more than the actual lateral force. So, yeah, it’s interesting. To me it actually helped at that specific track, at Toronto.”

YOU’VE BEEN STRONG THIS YEAR. WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU AND TEAM PENSKE NEED TO DO TO BE EVEN STRONGER?

“For me personally is to qualify better. It’s not always been about pace. Last week it was just strategy and the lack of communication that got us. I actually feel like we would have definitely made it through to the Fast Six and potentially had a pole. Yeah, the last couple, Road America being P2 in practice, then not converting that in qualifying, that’s the sort of thing we’ve got to be on top of. I’ve just had a messy year of qualifying as far as being in the wrong place on track or not getting a big enough gap to the car in front, or simply not performing, not being fast enough. I’ve had all those situations. That’s the area I need to improve on for the next half of this season. I think that will put me in a really good position, if I do.”

DO YOU FEEL THE COMPETITION LEVEL IS AT AN ALL-TIME HIGH?

“Yeah, definitely the all-time high as far as driver talent, the quality of teams. Yeah, it hasn’t been this tough ever. Yeah, three big teams now, four big teams: Penske, McLaren, Andretti, Ganassi. You add Shank into that. I don’t think there’s a series more competitive around the world than this.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE WHOLE TEST SITUATION WITH COLTON HERTA AND FORMULA 1?

“Yeah, man, I wish there was Zak Brown around when I was that age, when I first got to INDYCAR, because I know I would have got a chance in Formula 1. It’s cool to see that because I know how that feels. I know how awesome that would be for Colton. I really hope, if he goes there, he does really well. But, yeah, I mean, a great opportunity. I think it’s just so fantastic to have a team like McLaren and Zak Brown in INDYCAR. I think it’s great for the series. It’s good for the young guys here obviously. I think it’s great what Zak Brown is doing, I do. Cool to see.”

DO YOU THINK MCLAREN, ARROW MCLAREN SP HAS AN ADVANTAGE CORNERING YOUNG TALENT BECUASE HE CAN DANGLE THIS F1 RIDE TO JOINING THE TEAM?

“Yes, absolutely. That would be 100% why Palou would want to go there. I don’t blame him honestly. I mean, I would be the same. If you had a chance to go and race in F1, as big as F1 is now, yeah, you would want to go there. It’s pretty cool. You think about the reach that McLaren has, Formula E, Formula 1, sports car. Man, it’s a pretty good place, pretty good organization to be involved with.”

HOW FAR OFF DO YOU THINK ARROW MCLAREN SP IS TO JOINING THE PENSKES AND GANASSIS AT THE VERY ELITE LEVEL OF INDYCAR?

“They’re right there. They’re right there. It will be interesting. Obviously they’ve had young drivers, so it takes a while for the young guys to understand exactly what you need as far as development goes. But adding Rossi to the team, there’s a guy with a lot of experience. I think that’s kind of what it needed. Yeah, they’re there, man. They’re very, very strong. They’re a very good team.”

WITH HALF THE FIELD NEVER BEING IN TORONTO, DOES THAT GIVE YOU A CONFIDENCE BOOST BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN THERE BEFORE AND DONE WELL?

“No, no. Basically with simulators and video and everything, it doesn’t really give you an advantage any more. I think people turn up, they pretty much know the track. Yeah, it’s anyone’s guess who will be the quickest there and what the top 10 would be, honestly.”

Alex Palou set to join McLaren Racing in 2023

McLaren Racing announced the addition of reigning NTT IndyCar Series Alex Palou to its driver roster for the 2023 season in the wake of an earlier announcement from Chip Ganassi Racing that contradicted the Spaniard’s accurate plans for the upcoming racing season.

Earlier on Tuesday, July 12, Chip Ganassi Racing issued a statement that the team had exercised its option to retain Palou for the 2023 IndyCar season. Not long after the news was released to the public, however, Palou took to social media to deny the announcement.

“I have recently learned from the media that this afternoon, without my approval, Chip Ganassi Racing issued a press release announcing that I would be driving with CGR in 2023,” Palou tweeted. “Even more surprising was that CGR’s release included a “quote” which did not come from me. I did not approve that press release, and I did not author or approve that quote. As I have recently informed CGR, for personal reasons, I do not intend to continue with the team after 2022. This evening’s unfortunate events aside, I have great respect for the CGR team, and look forward to finishing this season strongly together.”

Palou then unveiled the news through social media that he will be joining the McLaren Racing family for the upcoming racing season. The series which Palou will compete for with McLaren (IndyCar, Formula One and Formula E) is yet to determined, but he will be joining the organization’s F1 Testing of Previous Cars program.

“I’m extremely excited to join the driver roster for such an iconic team as McLaren,” Palou said in a released statement. “I’m excited to be able to show what I can do behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car and looking at what doors that may open. I want to thank everyone at Chip Ganassi Racing for everything they have done for me.”

Palou is currently campaigning in his third full-time season in the IndyCar Series, where he is ranked in fourth place in the drivers’ standings on a strength of four podiums through nine of the 17-race schedule. He trails teammate and points leader Marcus Ericsson by 35 points.

Palou joined Chip Ganassi Racing for the 2021 IndyCar season after spending his inaugural season in 2020 with Dale Coyne Racing with Team Goh. In his first event with CGR, he achieved his maiden victory at Barber Motorsports Park in April. He went on to achieve victories at Road America in June and at Portland International Raceway in September while engaged in a season-long championship battle against Josef Newgarden and Pato O’Ward. When the season concluded at the Streets of Long Beach in September, Palou achieved his maiden IndyCar Series title and became the first Spaniard to win an IndyCar championship.

“We have always said that we want the best talent at McLaren, and it’s exciting to be able to include Alex on that list,” Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, said. “I’m also looking forward to seeing him get behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car as part of our Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) programme alongside Pato O’Ward and Colton Herta as we continue to build our driver talent. Alex is an incredibly talented driver who has won in every series he has raced in, and I’m happy to welcome him to the McLaren family.”

The addition of Palou is among a series of additions and re-signings made by McLaren Racing throughout this season, among which include Lando Norris, Colton Herta, Pato O’Ward, Alexander Rossi and Felix Rosenqvist. Norris is currently campaigning in his fourth full-time Formula One season while Herta, who currently competes for Andretti Autosport in the IndyCar Series in spite of having a McLaren contract, is coming off a two-day McLaren F1 testing session at Portugal’s Portimão Circuit. O’Ward, who is currently embarking in his third full-time season at Arrow McLaren SP in IndyCar, inked a three-year contract extension with the team in May while Rossi, who currently competes for Andretti, is set to join McLaren as the team’s second IndyCar competitor in 2023. Rosenqvist, who is campaigning in his second season at AMSP, signed a multi-year extension to remain at McLaren, though the name of his racing series for next season is yet to be determined.

McLaren Racing will unveil its full driver lineup across all motorsports regions at a later date.

With his plans for next season set, Palou continues his pursuit to defend his IndyCar title by competing in the upcoming Honda Indy Toronto at the Exhibition Place in Toronto, Canada. The event is scheduled to occur on Sunday, July 17, at 3 p.m. ET on NBC Peacock.

Pagenaud enters race weekend as reigning Toronto winner

Pataskala, Ohio (11 July 2022) – Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) returns to NTT INDYCAR SERIES action with a trip north of the border for this weekend’s Honda Indy Toronto, the team’s first race on the streets of the Canadian city (Sunday, 3:00pm ET, Peacock, SiriusXM Ch. 160).

Defending race winner Simon Pagenaud will drive the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda in the race at the Exhibition Place circuit, while Helio Castroneves will be at the wheel of the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda.

Pagenaud won the most recent event in Toronto, dominating the 2019 race when he led 80 of the 85 laps from the pole on the challenging 11-turn, 1.786-mile layout. Pagenaud also finished second in 2018 and won the pole in 2017. The Frenchman raced 14 times at the Toronto street circuit, qualifying in the top four for the last seven consecutive races.

Castroneves is a 15-time competitor in Toronto, finishing second three times among four podium finishes. Castroneves was the 2014 pole winner, qualifying six times in the top three.

MSR will lean on the strength of its driver pairing with the Ohio-based team heading to the Honda Indy Toronto for the very first time with the event having been cancelled the last two race seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The race will be televised on Sunday on Peacock at 3 p.m. ET. The event will also be broadcast live on SiriusXM Channel 160.

    Driver Quotes:

    Helio Castroneves:

“I’m super excited for Toronto and first of all, coming back after so many years – my last race in Toronto was in 2017 and I remember we were having a blast there. I’m sure the Canadian fans are really excited to have IndyCar back there again as well. Myself and Simon are really looking forward to it, especially after Detroit qualifying. We showed a lot of speed on the street courses, so hopefully we can have another strong weekend.”

    Simon Pagenaud:

“I can’t wait to go back to Toronto, it was such a great event back in 2019 and I won the race! It’s a race track that I really enjoy. I love the rhythm of the track and it’s a place that I feel very comfortable at. We have an amazing street course package with Meyer Shank Racing, so obviously it’s a weekend that I’m really looking forward to. Hopefully we execute perfectly all weekend and end up with some hardware at the end.”

McLaughlin Wins Mid-Ohio With Family Present

LEXINGTON, Ohio (Sunday, July 3, 2022) — A wild and chaotic day at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course wasn’t enough to stop Scott McLaughlin, who scored his second NTT INDYCAR SERIES win of the season Sunday in The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio Presented by the All-New 2023 Civic Type R.

Driving the No. 3 Odyssey Battery Team Penske Chevrolet, McLaughlin held off reigning NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Alex Palou in the No. 10 NTT DATA Chip Ganassi Racing Honda over the final 17 laps, beating him to the finish line by 0.5512 seconds.

It was the second time this season these two drivers have finished in that order – they also did so in the season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Florida when McLaughlin won his first series race.

“This is amazing,” McLaughlin said. “I’m really proud of the (Team Penske crew). The car they gave me was a little hard to drive toward the end. I would love to make it a little bit easier for myself, but I’m super proud of them.

“You’re thinking about fuel (at the end of the race), but thankfully Chevy gave us great fuel mileage and drivability off the restarts that allowed me to get a bit of a gap from Palou.”

2014 NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Will Power rallied from the 21st starting spot and a Lap 1 spin in Turn 9 to finish third for his fourth podium finish of the season in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet.

Ed Carpenter Racing’s Rinus VeeKay finished fourth in the No. 21 Bitcoin Racing Team with BitNile Chevrolet, and six-time Mid-Ohio race winner Scott Dixon rounded out the top five in the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda.

The 80-lap race was treacherous compared to past NTT INDYCAR SERIES races at the track. There were six cautions for 17 laps, more than the previous five Mid-Ohio NTT INDYCAR SERIES races combined. The 2021 race and Race 2 of the 2020 doubleheader each featured two stoppages, while Race 1 of the 2020 doubleheader and the events in 2019 and 2018 did not have any.

The first caution came on Lap 1 for a waved-off start, and the second on Lap 10 was for a mechanical failure on the No. 7 Vuse Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet of Felix Rosenqvist, who was running third when his car started hitting the rev limiter in Turn 2 and then billowed smoke.

It was an ominous sign for NTT P1 Award winner Pato O’Ward, who led the first 28 laps in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet. However, on Lap 30, O’Ward began reporting power issues on his car.

By Lap 54, O’Ward’s car had completely lost power as it stalled at the end of pit lane. His Arrow McLaren SP team pushed the car back to the pit box, where O’Ward exited and ended the streak of Mid-Ohio polesitters winning the race at three.

This allowed McLaughlin, who started second next to O’Ward, to inherit the lead during a round of green flag pit stop cycles on Lap 31. During the stops, rookie Kyle Kirkwood went off track in Turn 9 in the No. 14 Sexton Properties Chevrolet of AJ Foyt Racing.

The yellow flag flew just as green-flag pit stops cycled through, which put McLaughlin at the point. The second-year series driver was in full control of the race on the 13-turn, 2.258-mile permanent road course thereafter.

McLaughlin led 45 of the final 52 laps. Colton Herta led seven laps after not pitting under caution on Lap 53 while the rest of the leaders pitted. McLaughlin got the lead back on Lap 60 and never looked back, keeping Palou in his mirror through a series of cautions and restarts.

Palou, a Spaniard, was never more than second behind New Zealand native McLaughlin, and the final caution on Lap 59 for contact between Romain Grosjean’s No. 28 ForeverLawn/DHL Honda and Alexander Rossi’s No. 27 NAPA AUTO PARTS/AutoNation Honda gave him one last chance to try to capture his first win of 2022.

“Man, it was so close,” said Palou, who started seventh. “Our No. 10 NTT DATA car was fast. We just missed it by ‘this much’ again today, but I’m super proud. I don’t think I was good enough to pass (McLaughlin). I wish I would have gone for it, but I did not see that it was clear to do it.”

McLaughlin’s third podium of the season and Palou’s fourth allowed them to close in on the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship. Marcus Ericsson held his points lead with a sixth-place finish in the No. 8 Ridgeline Lubricants Honda, but he is now just 20 points ahead of Power. Josef Newgarden is third, 34 points back.

Palou rose to fourth in the standings, just 35 points back. McLaughlin jumped two positions to seventh in the standings, 69 points back of Ericsson, the winner of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge.

While McLaughlin’s surge in the championship standings will be beneficial down the road, the three-time Australian V8 Supercars champion was basking in the glory of scoring his first NTT INDYCAR SERIES win with his parents, Wayne and Diane, in attendance. The couple came to the United States in May for the “500” and reunited with their son for the first time in two and a half years. This was the first race they’ve seen him win in this series.

“Oh, I really wanted to get a win here with mom and dad for the first time,” McLaughlin said. “To have mom and dad here on America’s weekend is awesome.”

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES takes a week off before heading to Toronto for the first time in three years due to restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Honda Indy Toronto will take place Sunday, July 17 at 3 p.m. (ET), live on Peacock Premium and the INDYCAR Radio Network.
