CHEVROLET RACING IN NTT INDYCAR SERIES: Chevy INDYCAR Teams Eager for Challenges of Road America

A dozen Chevrolet-powered IndyCars will look for Bowtie’s sixth win of 2022

DETROIT (June 9, 2022) – Chevrolet’s team’s in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES will close out a hectic five-week stretch of competition this weekend at one of North America’s top road-racing destinations: Wisconsin’s historic Road America for the Sonsio Grand Prix Presented by AMR.

Twelve Chevrolet-powered IndyCars – including the 2022 debut of Paretta Autosport’s No. 16 Chevrolet for Simona De Silvestro – are entered for Sunday’s 55-lap 220-mile race around the 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit. De Silvestro and AJ Foyt Racing’s Tatiana Calderon – in the No. 11 Rokit Chevrolet – are the first female pair to compete in the same INDYCAR race in nine years, and both are on Team Chevy.

Chevrolet is coming off an historic victory last weekend at Belle Isle – the manufacturer’s 100th INDYCAR win since it returned to the series in 2012 with its 2.2-liter, twin-turbo V-6 engine. The Bowtie Brand reached the mark by winning five of the first seven events of 2022 and leads the Engine Manufacturer Championship.

“Everyone on our program and all of our teams have worked extremely hard during this run of events at Indianapolis, plus Detroit and now Road America,” said Rob Buckner, Chevrolet Program Manager for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. “We’re grateful to reach the 100-victory mark with our 2.2-liter V6 engine, and there’s no place better than to start the drive to 200 than at a circuit like Road America.

“It’s a circuit that presents a variety of engineering tests,” he added. “Obviously the track is very fast with long, wide-open straights but at end of these are hard braking zones for a number of 90-degree corners. Throw in high-speed corners like the Carousel and the Kink, plus a race surface that brings high tire degradation, and this will be one of the most challenging races of the season.”

Road America returned to the INDYCAR schedule in 2016, and Chevrolet has won twice at the circuit since then: Team Penske’s Will Power – the winner last weekend at Detroit and the current points leader – in 2016 and teammate Josef Newgarden in 2018.

In addition, Arrow McLaren SP’s Felix Rosenqvist won at the circuit in 2020. Chevrolet also has been strong in qualifying with the manufacturer taking six of seven pole positions since 2016.

Newgarden has extra incentive to win at Road America. With early-season wins at Texas Motor Speedway and the Long Beach street circuit, he heads to Wisconsin with a chance to win the PeopleReady Force for Good Challenge, which rewards the first driver to win on an oval, street circuit and road course in the same season. That driver will share $500,000 with his or her team and donate $500,000 to that driver and team’s chosen charity.

Chevrolet and the NTT INDYCAR Series continue the 2022 season with the Sonsio Grand Prix at 12:55 p.m. ET on Sunday, June 12 from Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The race will air live on NBC, the Peacock streaming service and SiriusXM IndyCar Nation (Channel 160) beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET. Live timing and scoring will be available at racecontrol.indycar.com.

    TEAM CHEVY QUOTES

PATO O’WARD, NO. 5 ARROW McLAREN CHEVROLET, ARROW McLAREN SP: “I am excited to go back to Road America where I got my first pole in IndyCar. I’m looking forward to making our No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet a bit better than last year and fight up at the front.”

FELIX ROSEQVIST, NO. 7 VUSE CHEVROLET, ARROW McLAREN SP: “It will be good to be back at Road America. It’s where I got my first IndyCar win back in the day. Think it’s been one of our weakest tracks and I actually didn’t drive last year; but I think we’ve made some good progress since then. We know what to do to be competitive so we’re pretty pumped to get back and try to continue our streak of good speed and good results that we’ve had lately.”

TATIANA CALDERON, NO. 11 ROKiT CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING: “It’s been very tough for me coming as a rookie with very little testing. So I think we have improved particularly, like, in the road courses where I can, like, explore the limit of the car a little bit more. These street circuits are really tough here, compared to Europe even or some other places. The bumps that you experience in Detroit, for example, I think that’s unique from INDYCAR that you can have all these kind of tracks. I’ve been enjoying suffering a little bit, as well. It’s tough, but we like the good competition. Yeah, hopefully once we get to places where I’ve been before, like Indy GP again, Mid-Ohio where I tested for the first time last year in July, to go to familiar places, I hope that our performance can continue to improve.”

SIMONA de SILVESTRO, NO. 16 CHEVROLET, PARETTA AUTOSPORT: “I think the last time I was at Road America was 2009. For me, the expectation, I think at the end of the day you want to do the best job you can. I think we have to be realistic as well. We have not tested. It’s the middle of the season, all these guys and girls have been running half the season already. We need to see where we kind of stack up. I think for me in a sense, I’m really looking forward to getting back in an IndyCar. So from that point of view I think I’ll push quite hard to get up to speed as quickly as I can.”

CONOR DALY, NO. 20 BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING: “Road America is such a classic event for our sport. To be partnered with Paretta Autosport this weekend as well is really nice. Having three drivers under our banner will help us collect a good amount of information and hopefully lead to us being as strong as we can be! We’ve had three solid races in a row and want to keep adding points to the board and keep this positive momentum going!”

RINUS VEEKAY, NO. 21 DIRECT SUPPLY CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING: “Road America is my favorite track, it’s been two years since I’ve last driven there so I am excited for this weekend! The track suits my driving style and the team has made huge progress. It should be a good weekend, especially with Direct Supply on the car! I’m really ready to get back on track there with all of my bones in the right place places this year!”

CALLUM ILOTT, NO. 77 DYNAMIC EDGE CHEVROLET, JUNCOS HOLLINGER RACING: “Having spent a week out of the car obviously in Detroit, looking at the racing from a slightly different angle, I can happily say I am going to be back in the car for Road America. I have been cleared by the INDYCAR Medical Team. We looked quite extensively at my hand and the risk of further damage is a lot lower. It’s still a factor, but the track surface in Road America is a lot less bumpy than Detroit. Looking at Road America, I haven’t been there yet, but it’s a good high speed fun track and quite long as well. There are some good overtaking zones, so it should be a fun weekend with a lot of action. I am super excited to get back in, coming off the momentum we had at the INDY GP we should be on for a good weekend.”

SIMONA DE SILVESTRO, NO. 16 PARETTA AUTOSPORT CHEVROLET, AND TATIANA CALDERON, NO. 11 ROKIT AJ FOYT CHEVROLET met with members of the media via ZOOM to discuss the upcoming race at Road America.

THE MODERATOR: This weekend the NTT INDYCAR SERIES back at it heading to the historic 4.0 mile road course at Road America. For the first time in some nine years two women will be competing in a significant number of races during the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season.

This weekend Simona de Silvestro returns to the series, first of several races in 2022, as Paretta Autosport expand their program this year after doing the one-off Indy 500 last year. She will drive the No. 16 Paretta Autosport Chevrolet.

Preparing for her sixth start of the season, driver of the No. 11 Rocket A.J. Foyt Racing Chevrolet, it’s great to have Tatiana Calderon with us as well.

Simona, certainly you’ve been in the simulator, this is a program that was announced in April with KiwiCo onboard. How excited are you to get to Road America?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: I’m super excited to get back in the car. Yeah, it’s been a while since we announced it, so there was a lot of time to think about it, maybe overthink it. Talking a lot with the engineers and stuff like that. I’m just really glad to be in the week of the race now, kind of just getting down to work and get going.

So, yeah, I can’t wait to be back in an INDYCAR. I’ve been waiting for this for a while now, especially on the road course. So, yeah, pretty excited about it.

THE MODERATOR: Obviously Paretta Autosport, Female-Forward team, bringing back most of the team both over the wall and when it comes to the commercial side as well.

Even those no longer with the team, Caitlyn Brown, she did the inside front tire last year’s 500, she is now with Scott McLaughlin’s car as a junior mechanic. Lauren Sullivan is now a coordinator with Team Penske. Madison Conrad did the inside right tire. She is now involved in NASCAR.

The women’s program that has and is working providing a lot of opportunities. So I guess the question is, how excited are you to see what this next step looks like with Paretta Autosport?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Like you just said, I think it’s really important. I think what Beth has put together last year, just doing the Indy 500 with these women, seeing three of them really kind of taking off and doing some really important jobs on some other teams, I think it just really gives a lot of credit to her.

I think if she wouldn’t have put this program together, I don’t think these women would be in those positions now. I think that’s something really special. I think it’s something that Beth can really be proud of.

For me as well, I think the last seven years I’ve always tried to come back to INDYCAR. It was really a struggle, to be honest, to get a seat or something like that. Trying really hard to do it because I think for me INDYCAR is very special and I think it’s something that really suits me, where I really wanted to race.

She putting this program together, especially now doing more races, I think it’s really important, a really big step forward actually for us as well, just to see how we’re doing, and hopefully we can really build on this and become full-time.

Yeah, I’m super pumped. She’s an amazing person. I wouldn’t be here without her from that point of view. I think all of the women involved, me, myself, the other ones, I think we’re pretty grateful for her really fighting for this and getting it going.

THE MODERATOR: Also welcoming Tatiana Calderon. Tell us about the first few races this season for you and what you are learning and continue to learn about the race team and about the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.

TATIANA CALDERON: Yeah, first of all I’m super happy to see another female driver joining the grid, to see women in motorsport. I think it’s great for the series, great for the sport. Is another very competitive driver joining the grid that is already quite competitive. Yeah, looking forward to see Simona and compete against her this weekend and in the next couple of rounds.

But also, you know, it’s been very tough for me coming as a rookie with very little testing.

Yeah, hopefully once we get to places where I’ve been before, like Indy GP again, Mid-Ohio where I tested for the first time last year in July, to go to familiar places, I hope that our performance can continue to improve

    .

THE MODERATOR: That’s what makes the championship all the more special and difficult because of all the disciplines involved.

It’s back to Road America really for both of you. Simona, you were in Atlantics in 2007, 2008, and Tatie in the old Star Mazda Series. Your thoughts about going back to a big track like Road America?

TATIANA CALDERON: I think it was 2011, 2012. All I remember was the carrousel and I really liked the track because it reminds you of, I don’t know, like Spa-Francochamps or something, flowing elevation changes.

I will be in the simulator just to remind myself of all the corners and stuff. Yeah, happy to be back in a road course. I think everyone enjoys Road America quite a lot, so looking forward to the weekend.

THE MODERATOR: We’ll open it up for questions.

    Q. Tatiana, through now a handful of races in your rookie INDYCAR season, do you feel like you have a grasp of where you’ve improved the most so far as well as maybe one or two areas that you’re supremely focused on trying to improve as the season goes on?

TATIANA CALDERON: Yes, certainly. I think the first time I did more than 20 laps in the car was, like, in the race in St. Petersburg. Then to understand a little bit the tires like I’m used to, like Pirelli, the Yokohama I was running in Super Formula a few years back. It’s a very different type of tire and style I think you need in INDYCAR.

Just getting a little bit of the specific style for this type of car, a bit heavier, but good power. I think it took me a little bit longer than I would want to. Also because we started with the street circuits. It’s a little bit more challenging to explore the limit of the car when you know the wall is right there, and if you miss the track time in a place like this.

Yeah, I think just understanding a little bit more of the car behavior and the tires is what will bring me more performance towards the end of the year.

    Q. Simona, you’ve done full seasons in INDYCAR, but it’s been a long time. What do you feel like is a realistic expectation for you and the team?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Yeah, I think the last time I was at Road America was 2009. Yeah, it’s been quite a while.

But I don’t know.

So from that point of view I think I’ll push quite hard to get up to speed as quickly as I can.

Yeah, I don’t know. I think if we do our job correctly, I think we can be on the competitive side for sure. I don’t think we can win the race or be a podium. I don’t think. I think that’s really unrealistic. Even if we see Will qualifying 16th and stuff like that, I think the field is super deep.

From that point of view, yeah, I think we have to be realistic. We just need to do our job correctly and just kind of, yeah, keep chipping away at it, finishing the race. I think if we do everything correctly, I think the race could be all right.

    Q. A decade or so ago it was more common to see a handful of women racing in INDYCAR. Nine years since we had two or more outside the Indy 500. What do you feel getting back to a trend where we see women racing in INDYCAR on a more regular basis, what that can potentially do for the growth, from the fan side or potential future driver side?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: I think, like you said, for me personally, when I got into INDYCAR in 2010, there were quite a few females. Danica was driving. We were quite a few.

It’s interesting the last few times it hasn’t really happened. I think in a sense, seeing at a top level it’s only going to be the two of us, but I think the trend has changed a little bit, there’s some up-and-coming. If you look at the junior series, I think it’s much more common to see female drivers, which I think is really positive.

But for sure, I think being the two of us in a top series, also hopefully get results, I think it can encourage even more girls to go driving and all that. I think it’s really important that we are able to be competing in INDYCAR, yeah.

TATIANA CALDERON: I saw you race when I was doing Star Mazda. I look up to Simona, Danica. There was Bea at some races when I was there, as well. It’s a shame it was a long period the last couple of years that we hadn’t had somebody in the top level of single-seaters.

I think sometimes you have to see it to believe it, for the young generation to say I want to be in INDYCAR, because there are females that can compete against men in a very competitive championship.

I hope that together we can keep that momentum going and to see more females starting also in single-seaters because at the end that’s what we need. It’s a circle, so hopefully there will be more and more joining us in the future, and we can stay and represent women in the best possible way.

THE MODERATOR: Tatiana, did you look up to Simona, watch her drive?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: You make me feel old (laughter).

TATIANA CALDERON: Let’s just experience looking at that (smiling).

She was doing so well. I wanted to be in INDYCAR watching her and Danica being very competitive. I think great news to have her back, to have more females. The more the better. The more normal it becomes.

THE MODERATOR: You’re both way younger than any of us on the call, so don’t go there, Simona.

    Q. Simona, an unusual situation where when you leave a series for seven years and come back, the car isn’t often the same. I guess the chassis is the same fundamentally but a lot of changes to the car. What are you feeling like is going to be your main challenge this weekend, what aspect of the car will be most difficult?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Yeah, in the sense when I’m in the car, it feels pretty similar because, like you said, it’s the same chassis. But definitely with the aeroscreen it seems the behavior of the car has changed quite a lot, as well as looking at the onboard looks different than how I used to drive it.

To be honest at the moment, I haven’t driven it. I’m a bit maybe overthinking sometimes a little bit. I need to go into the weekend and see what we got.

The good thing is it’s been quite a while. I think in a sense I won’t really remember how it really felt like so I can start from a blank sheet and work from there. I think a lot of the guys who have been running a lot, I think the aeroscreen changed that a lot. I think they’ve been trying to get the feel they used to have without it. In that sense for me it’s been so long that maybe I’ll just hopefully adapt to it a little bit quicker.

But the other thing, I only haven’t done a really long race, like an INDYCAR race in a while. I did GT last year where I think we were in the car for like 45 minutes. I think that’s going to be interesting to be back in the car for two hours.

I don’t know. For me, I feel like a little kid again getting to drive an INDYCAR. Yeah, I’m really looking forward to it. Hopefully I haven’t forgotten how to drive so I think we’ll be okay.

    Q. Can you tell us who your engineer is? Have you been able to establish a relationship there?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Yeah, little bit. I actually was in Detroit with the team as well, with Ed Carpenter Racing, kind of integrating. I know a few guys there that I worked with in the past, so that’s kind of positive.

John Gentilozzi is going to be my engineer. He’s really well-integrated in the team. I think the guys they have there are really strong. From that point of view, even my teammates, I think they’re really strong. I can just kind of feed off them, try to get up to speed as quickly as I can.

I know they are quick and that will help as well.

    Q. Simona, right now the plan is still Road America, Mid-Ohio and Nashville for you this year, no other races at this point?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Correct, yes. At the moment it’s those three that we announced.

    Q. Because Beth wants to obviously build out Paretta Autosport, Female-Forward, how has the dynamic changed with the female personnel, given three of last year’s members of the team have left? Have they been replaced with other females? What’s the female dynamic right now?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Yeah, so there’s a few that are coming back. Like you just said, three of them left and got different opportunities, which I think is really positive.

But I think what Beth really is going to try to do is really find more girls that can kind of train, train with Carpenter, kind of build them in. Just actually giving them their, let’s say, first step into it.

I think she’s been able to do that last year. I think that’s kind of how she’s looking at it: giving the first step. Hopefully they will grow enough within the team that we can start really running with those girls and kind of they can really do the changing tire and all that, really be pointed out to be left front or something like that.

But that will take a little bit of time now, especially with our new association with Carpenter. This is all kind of a work in progress. But hopefully with this year and having even more races next year or something like that, this is really kind of the first steps towards that goal.

    Q. Simona, how beneficial was it for you to be integrated with ECR in Detroit? What do you think you learnt over that weekend that you can bring forward to Road America this weekend?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Quite a lot. I think the biggest thing was just the process of the race with strategy and all that. It was actually cool to be on the timing stand because in my career I never really did that because I was always driving. You kind of see a little bit all the stuff behind the scenes, you kind of learn and understand a little bit more what the engineers are going through, things like that. That was good.

Also kind of just getting back to how an INDYCAR race unfolds. I haven’t been around it for a long time. It was just good to see how this kind of all works.

It’s still pretty similar to what how I’m used to, but I think it’s always good to get a bit of a refresher, let’s say.

    Q. Tatiana, Kyle had a great race on Sunday. What do you think the race on Sunday is going to do for the team’s confidence this weekend going into Road America?

TATIANA CALDERON: I think it’s a very different type of circuit, and the setup will be completely different to a street circuit. Yeah, I think Seb, we were looking a little bit on his data, the comments he had from the car back in Road America. I think we have a good baseline to start off with.

Obviously, you know, every year every driver is a little bit different in terms of what they like of the car.

But, no, I’m happy. I’m confident the team has been very motivated to keep trying to move up the grid. Yeah, I’m happy with my engineering group and everybody just really listening to my comments and trying to make it better for me.

Hopefully we’ll have an entertaining weekend.

    Q. How are you feeling about getting back into a road course race after almost seven years? What are your thoughts about not getting a 500 drive but a three-race program for 2022?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: You know, I’m really looking forward to get on a road course, street course, because I think that’s really where I’ve in the past my strength in a sense. So from that point of view it just gives me a bit of confidence. When I look back at races, I was kind of all right, so I think I can get there again. That’s pretty positive.

I think getting the three races instead of the 500, in a sense it makes a lot of sense. I think the situation we would have been in, Ed couldn’t run a fourth car, there wasn’t enough people to run a fourth car, so it didn’t really make much sense to really try to do something that wasn’t really possible to do just to do the 500.

Coming up with those three races I think in general, as well, to where Beth wants her team to go, how she wants to grow it, I think it makes a lot of sense for us to be a bit more on track as well, getting this experience.

Also all the women that are involved, to get to experience different things, hopefully we’ll get some momentum through that to do this.

    Q. Simona, being out for a bit, a lot of talk has been about the road course. Do you think the physicality of the race will be much of a challenge for you?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Well, I’ve been training really hard the last few months. I think for sure when you don’t drive for a while, yeah, I think there’s always being fit, but then there’s driver fit. I would ideally for sure liked to have had a test day to be in the car, seat position, all that. Right now we did everything at the shop and I’m going to go in the first session, and hopefully it will all be good. I think having a test day would have been really good.

But, yeah, I don’t know. I’ve trained a lot. I’ve been in racing for a long time. Hopefully what I’ve done is enough. Yeah, you know, for sure I think it won’t be a walk in the park. I think these cars are quite tough to drive. You don’t have power steering, things like that. The carrousel, it will be quite a lot of Gs going in.

For sure it’s not going to be super easy, but at the end of the day I’m a racing driver. When opportunities like this come up, I need to be ready for it, and hopefully I am.

    Q. You’re a racing driver. Put your INDYCAR racing hat on. Do you see yourself as a female INDYCAR driver or an INDYCAR driver who happens to be a female?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Yeah, well, definitely more the second one. I think for me throughout my whole career I’ve always just been a driver. You know what I mean? I think for sure as the years went on, I realized I definitely can have an impact as well because I just kind of went my way. I didn’t care that I was a girl, I just wanted to be a racing driver, I wanted to win races. That’s how I went about it.

In the sense I think racing is a great platform to show that you can compete against the guys. I think I’ve shown that in the past. I think that’s a really important message. Also I think in business and all that, if somebody is good enough, they should get the opportunity.

I think that’s something I’ve always fought for. I’m still fighting for this, to really show that, yeah, anything is possible. Yeah, for sure it’s not an easy walk and stuff like that, but hopefully if we get good results I think it will create even more opportunities for young girls to follow their dream and not be afraid to try something different.

    Q. Tatiana, would you mind answering that one, too, on the gender part.

TATIANA CALDERON: I totally agree with what Simona said. I feel like a racing driver first who happen to be female. I think it’s the same way Simona has done it: you have to be measuring yourself against the best to be better. I think in this sport is one of the only sports where we can compete in equal terms. We can prove that we can do the same job or better than anybody.

It’s been just more about having those opportunities and maybe sometimes you have to knock the door, use some other tools that you have has a female, and explore those because that’s something you have.

But certainly I hope that having more females at the top level and doing well will then open more doors for the generation that comes underneath us because it’s not easy to get those chances.

THE MODERATOR: Tatiana, obviously when you go through a paddock area and see little girls, young women that aspire to do racing, maybe haven’t thought about racing as a place of employment or job opportunity, there’s a connection you guys make that no one else in the paddock can make. Do you sense that, feel that? How important is that and how special is that?

TATIANA CALDERON: Oh, absolutely. I think that’s one of the things I love most about American racing, that the paddocks are open for more kids, for more people so you can interact with some of the little girls. Just a handshake or a picture can change their view on the sport. That’s something you feel with their parents, as well. It’s like, Look, this is a girl, you can do this.

It’s been really nice to experience that kind of thing. With little changes you can maybe change the perception of somebody or get them interested. I have felt that more in America than in any other place. So hopefully we start to change some stereotypes and some beliefs and we get more young girls involved very early on because I think you need that in sport as well, to start early.

    THE MODERATOR: Simona, you agree?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: I totally agree with Tatiana, what she says. If I look at myself when I was younger, I didn’t really realize, but in a sense I have, like, a really big impact in making people believe that really they can do anything.

I think also seeing the women that are in the team, that there is a lot of opportunities out there, not to be afraid to go that way.

I think sports is the perfect platform. Especially I think INDYCAR is the perfect platform because it’s quite accessible to fans. That makes it really special.

    Q. How do you see the future of women in motorsport? Do you think in the future they will be more opportunities or do you think it will be maintain those opportunities? We know Tatiana has been in the past few years in important championships around the world. We’re seeing more girls in junior categories. How do you see the future in these important categories around the world like INDYCAR, F2? Will women be more competing there more than now?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Well, I hope so. I think it’s still a bit of a fight in the sense, yeah, if I look at my career, I think in 2013 I was really kind of at the top where I should be. I was really competing up front in INDYCAR.

To be honest, there wasn’t really an opportunity to go into a bigger team. I think that still is something — I think that we need to fight for. I think if we are able to be really competitive, I think the last 10 years things have changed a lot, that there is in a sense more people willing to maybe take a risk. I think it’s still a bit of a work in progress.

I think we still need to prove that every weekend we can be running up front and get those results. Hopefully that will even pus

h more opportunities for women to really be at the top level in racing.

TATIANA CALDERON: I agree 100%. We need more opportunities with more females starting. It’s a long process. I think it’s been changing, but not at the speed we would like it to change.

Like Simona said, I think we still need that big opportunity. Look at Formula 1 as well, 45 years since a female was on the grid, right? In Formula 2 there has not been that many. We still need to get more opportunities at all levels, not just as drivers.

I definitely see people want female drivers more and more, to give us more opportunities. Hopefully we will see them in the upcoming years. But, yeah, it’s a long process.

    Q. Is there any chance to speed that process that you’re talking to, what would it be?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: I don’t know. In racing definitely money makes a big difference. If you have sponsors that are really helping teams that also really want to see you successful, I think that will really I think push things forward.

At the end of the day, if I look back, like I said before, I think in ’13 I finished in front of Josef in the championship. He ended up going to Penske and then won the championship two times.

At the end you need to get the right shot, you need to get people behind you who really want to support you. I think as a female driver, we do get the opportunities, but I think also sometimes it’s really quick when we have a bit of a bad season, not get dropped but the support then isn’t really right away.

I think with some guys, they get more chances at it. I think that is sometimes something we fight a little bit more for, what is a bit trickier in that sense to navigate.

For sure I think if you find good sponsors, a really good team that wants you around, wants you to succeed, I think we can really change that.

THE MODERATOR: Tatiana, the scrutiny is a little different, isn’t it?

    TATIANA CALDERON: Sorry?

THE MODERATOR: The scrutiny is a little different, to Simona’s point, that maybe a weekend that doesn’t go as well as you would like is looked at differently.

TATIANA CALDERON: Yeah, you know, sadly that’s the way it is sometimes. We get judged in a different way that maybe some guy does a mistake, it was a mistake, but if it’s a female driver then it’s because she’s a female sometimes.

But I think we’ve been changing that perception. Like I said, I think it’s just taking time and getting those opportunities to perform at a really high level with a really good team behind you.

It’s about also the management side believing truly in what we can achieve in a good sort of team atmosphere. Yeah, at the end of the day performance is all what matters. Hopefully we can show that and earn those opportunities once we are up there.

THE MODERATOR: Simona, what do the next 24, 48 hours look like? Are you going to be in the simulator tomorrow?

SIMONA de SILVESTRO: Yes, I’ll be in the sim getting through all the procedures and all that, then on Thursday I’ll be going to Road America, so looking forward to it.

THE MODERATOR: The countdown is on. We’ll wrap things up from here.

Meyer Shank Racing Heads to Road America for Third Consecutive Round of INDYCAR Competition

Elkhart Lake, Wisc. (8 June 2022) – Meyer Shank Racing’s durability and versatility will be tested this weekend when the NTT INDYCAR SERIES competes for the third-consecutive weekend on the third different type of track for the Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America on Sunday (12:30pm ET, NBC / SiriusXM Ch. 160).

Coming off of a big weekend in Detroit which saw both of MSR’s IMSA WeatherTech and INDYCAR programs on track, the team will now head to Road America for the eighth round of IndyCar competition.

After tackling the famed Indianapolis 500 on the world’s most famous oval and shifting to the temporary circuit at Detroit’s Belle Isle Park, MSR drivers Helio Castroneves and Simon Pagenaud will now race for 55 laps, 220.55 miles on the legendary four-mile, 14-turn permanent circuit in Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine.

Castroneves won the pole, led 17 laps and finished third in his most recent IndyCar race at Road America in 2017. He also finished fifth in 2016, with his best finish of seventh in four CART starts in 2001. Castroneves’ experience at Road America extends beyond open-wheel racing having also won from the IMSA WeatherTech DPi pole position in 2020.

Pagenaud’s best result at Road America was fourth in 2017, when he started from fourth and led two laps. His eight starts at the Wisconsin circuit include a 2007 Champ Car event and seven IndyCar races from 2016-21.

MSR has three IndyCar races at Road America to its credit from 2019-2021. The team’s run at Road America has seen quick qualifying pace with MSR qualifying on the front row in 2020 followed by a third place qualifying run in 2021.

Live broadcast coverage of the Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America will begin at 12:30pm ET on NBC on Sunday June 12th. SiriusXM will also provide live IndyCar Radio coverage on XM Ch. 160.

    Driver Quotes:

    Helio Castroneves:
“Road America is a track that I am looking forward to going back to. It’s certainly a challenging track, it’s very long – and beautiful by the way. Last time I was there in IndyCar I got pole position and last time I was there with IMSA I got the win from the pole, so I’m really looking forward to going back this weekend.”

    Simon Pagenaud:
“I’m really looking forward to Road America. Coming off of the last few races we have really started to pick up some momentum and we have been able to show what we’re capable of. All the guys have been working super hard behind the scenes and it’s showing in our performance. Hopefully we can have another good run in the AutoNation SiriusXM machine this weekend.”

A POWER-FUL WIN FOR TEAM CHEVY!
Will Power’s Win in Detroit is 100th INDYCAR Victory for Chevrolet Since 2012

DETROIT (June 5, 2022) – The Raceway at Belle Isle will not soon be forgotten by Chevrolet. The 2.35-mile course on Belle Isle in Detroit was the site of another milestone victory for Team Chevy as Will Power won the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix to score Chevrolet’s 100th win since returning to the NTT IndyCar Series with its 2.2-liter V6 engine in 2012.

Belle Isle was also the site for Chevrolet’s 25th (2014) and 50th (2016) wins. The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix will move from Belle Isle to downtown Detroit starting next year.

“We will always remember this last race on Belle Isle,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president Performance and Motorsports. “Not only was it our 100th win since returning to the series, but it was also such a strong run by Will Power and the No. 12 Verizon 5G Penske team. The team put together a great strategy, and Will ran it exactly the way it was drawn up. And it wasn’t easy.

“One hundred wins in a little more than 10 years in a very competitive series is a pretty incredible achievement. And it happened in our very own backyard, in front of so many Chevrolet vehicle owners, employees and supporters. This one is special.

“I’d like to thank all of the Chevrolet engineers, our partners at Ilmor and all of the drivers, crew chiefs, teams and owners who have contributed to all of those wins over the past decade.”

Chevrolet’s 100 wins occurred in 170 races. Team Chevy’s first win in this era occurred in its first race back in the series on March 25, 2012, by Helio Castroneves at St. Petersburg.

Power, who leads all Chevy drivers with 26 wins from 2012-2022, started 16th and quickly moved toward the front, eventually taking the lead on lap 15 and pacing the final 55 laps of the caution-free race. His Team Penske teammate Josef Newgarden started from the pole and led the first 13 laps before ending up fourth. Those two drivers combined to lead 68 of the 70 laps.

Power also took over the points lead.

Chevrolet has won five of the first seven races to start 2022, and leads the Manufacturers Standings, 595-542.

  • MSR’s Pagenaud Takes Top Ten in Farewell to Detroit Belle Isle

MSR’s Pagenaud Takes Top Ten in Farewell to Detroit Belle Isle

Castroneves’ race ends early with electrical issue

Detroit, Mich. (5 June 2022) – Simon Pagenaud took a hard-fought ninth-place finish for Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) in Sunday’s Detroit Grand Prix, the final NTT INDYCAR SERIES race at Belle Isle Park. Pagenaud was running 7th on the final lap, but was passed by two cars on the final lap after a full course caution was called to unofficially be classified 9th.

Despite getting a strong start to the race, teammate Helio Castroneves had his race end early on board the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda, finishing 25th after experiencing an electrical problem.

With a second row qualifying lockout, Pagenaud and Castroneves were on full attack at the start of the 70-lap race, each moving up a position. Both starting on Firestone reds, the two MSR Hondas settled into a rhythm with a focus on fuel and tire save early on with Pagenaud second and Castroneves third.

Both Pagenaud and Castroneves pitted for their first of two stops for the primary black tires on laps 15 and 16.

Just several laps after pitting, Castroneves encountered an electrical gremlin which effected the steering wheel. The three-time Detroit winner pitted on lap 25 to swap out the steering wheel, but unfortunately the issue would sideline Castroneves for the remainder of the race as his promising run ended early.

Pagenaud continued his hunt to the front of the field running in seventh throughout his second stint. Getting caught in lapped traffic, the No. 60 crew made the decision to call Pagenaud into the pits earlier than originally planned for the final stop of the race.

Pagenaud made his way back into the top ten for the final stretch of the race despite having to adapt a close adhearance to fuel management after the last stop. Pagenaud managed his fluctuating fuel numbers perfectly through the very end of the race which saw the 2013 Detroit winner cross the line scored in ninth. Pagenaud was seventh when the full course caution fell but was passed by two cars on the final corners and was unofficially classified 9th.

The NTT IndyCar Series will be racing for the third consecutive weekend when it travels to Elkhart Lake, Wis., for the Sonsio Grand Prix at Road America next Sunday.

    Meyer Shank Racing Driver Quotes:

    Simon Pagenaud:
“Great weekend overall for the entire Meyer Shank Racing team. We qualified so well with Helio and myself on the second row. We had a great start and we were running down Newgarden there for a while. Then we had some issues with the fuel mid-race, but eventually we finished seventh (classified 9th unofficially), which I think is a great result considering some of the issues we had. I’m quite excited about what we accomplished this weekend, every race is getting better and better. And now we’re showing ourselves on the pointy end of the grid, so I’m pretty excited about that heading to Road America next weekend.”

    Helio Castroneves:
“Really unfortunate way to end the day. My steering wheel all of the sudden went dark and I couldn’t see when to shift and then it came back. So I knew it was something electrical. We came in to the pits to try and change the steering wheel, but that didn’t work, so it wasn’t something that simple. The No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM machine was going really really well and I was having a great time. This is definitely not how I would like to finish especially at the last race at Belle Isle but I know we’ll get everything solved for next weekend at Road America.”

  • Power executes pit strategy to win final IndyCar event at Belle Isle

Power executes pit strategy to win final IndyCar event at Belle Isle

For the first time in 10 months, Will Power raced his way to Victory Lane in the NTT IndyCar Series after utilizing a bold pit strategy to fend off Alexander Rossi and win the final Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix at Belle Isle Street Circuit on Sunday, June 5.

The 41-year-old Power from Toowoomba, Australia, rolled off the starting grid in 16th place, but had the primary black compound tires, strategy and speed favoring him in the early stages as he cycled his way into the lead by Lap 14 while some that started on the soft red alternative compound tires, including Rossi, pitted early. After pitting for the first time by Lap 25, Power remained out in front by a large margin over the field. Once he pitted with 20 laps remaining for the red compound tires, the battle was left between him and Rossi, who was on a three-tire pit strategy but had the tires and the speed to pursue Power. Despite erasing Power’s advantage as the laps dwindled, Power managed to preserve his tires and have enough muscle in his car to beat Rossi by a little more than a second to capture his first IndyCar victory of the season.

With on-track qualifying that determined the starting lineup occurring on Saturday, Josef Newgarden won the final pole position at Belle Isle after recording a pole-winning lap at 112.477 mph in one minute, 15.2153 seconds. Joining him on the front was Takuma Sato, who clocked in a qualifying lap at 112.278 mph in one minute, 15.3490 seconds.

When the green flag waved and the race commenced, Newgarden took off with the lead through the first two turns and Simon Pagenaud moved into the runner-up spot while Helio Castroneves and Takuma Sato battled for third place.

Through the 14-turn circuit and when the field returned to the start/finish line, Newgarden led the first lap ahead of Pagenaud, Castroneves, Sato and Pato O’Ward while Colton Herta, David Malukas, Marcus Ericsson, Alexander Rossi and Scott McLaughlin were in the top 10.

Through the first five laps of the event, Newgarden was leading by half a second over Pagenaud followed by Castroneves, Sato, O’Ward, Herta, David Malukas, Ericsson, McLaughlin and Will Power. By then, Graham Rahal, who cut a tire after scrapping the Turn 2 wall during the opening laps of the event, retired. During this, Rinus VeeKay made an early pit stop under green.

Shortly after, names like Alexander Rossi, who started on red alternative tires, and Conor Daly pitted along with David Malukas and Santino Ferrucci as the tire pit strategy for the competitors and teams commenced. Felix Rosenqvist would also pit a few laps later.

By Lap 10, Newgarden continued to lead by more than three seconds over Pagenaud followed by Castroneves, O’Ward and Power while Scott Dixon, Herta, Alex Palou, Kyle Kirkwood and Christian Lundgaard were in the top 10. By then, Sato surrendered his spot in the top five to pit under green.

Four laps later, Will Power muscled his No. 12 Verizon Dallara-Chevrolet past teammate Newgarden’s No. 2 Hitachi Dallara-Chevrolet to take the lead in Turn 3. Two turns later, Scott Dixon moved his No. 9 PNC Bank Dallara-Honda into the runner-up spot as Palou engaged in a battle with Newgarden for third place, which he prevailed.

At the Lap 20 mark, Power was leading by more than two seconds over Dixon followed by Palou, Kirkwood and Rossi while Devlin DeFrancesco, VeeKay, David Malukas. Dalton Kellett and Conor Day were in the top 10. By then, a wave of competitors like Newgarden, O’Ward, Herta, Ericsson and Pagenaud pitted under green. Castroneves and Romain Grosjean also made their pit stops. A few laps earlier, Scott McLaughlin overshot and stalled his car in Turn 3, though he continued without needing assistance.

Five laps later, Power, who continued to run on the same black tires he started with in the event, extended his advantage to more than five seconds over Dixon followed by Palou, DeFrancesco and VeeKay. During the following lap, however, Power surrendered the lead to pit. Teammates Dixon and Palou would also pit as Power cycled his way back to the lead. By then, Daly, VeeKay, Malukas and Jack Harvey pitted as the strategy cycle continued. Meanwhile, Helio Castroneves retired due to an electrical glitch to his No. 06 SiriusXM Dallara-Honda.

By the Lap 30 mark, reports of precipitation were being made near the circuit as Power continued to lead by more than four seconds over Dixon.

At the halfway mark on Lap 35, Power was out in front by more than six seconds over Dixon and more than eight seconds over Palou. Rossi and Kirkwood filled in the top five while Newgarden, O’Ward, Pagenaud, Ericsson and Herta were in the top 10. By then, VeeKay, Malukas, Felix Rosenqvist, Daly and Sato were in the top 15 followed by Romain Grosjean, Jack Harvey, Lundgaard, DeFrancesco and Santino Ferrucci were in the top 20. Meanwhile, Jimmie Johnson was in 22nd ahead of Tatiana Calderon and Scott McLaughlin.

Ten laps later, Power remained as the leader by more than 19 seconds over Rossi while Dixon, Newgarden, O’Ward and Herta pitted under green. By then, Palou also pitted along with Pagenaud. When Lap 47 struck, Rossi made his third pit stop of the event and exited the circuit ahead of Dixon.

With 20 laps remaining, Power, who was leading by more than 35 seconds over Rossi, pitted for tires and fuel under green as he remained more than 35 seconds ahead of Rossi. By then, Kirkwood, who pitted a lap earlier after making contact with the wall, retired in his pit stall due to a broken tow link to Kirkwood’s No. 14 Dallara-Chevrolet.

Five laps later, Power remained as the leader, but only by less than 13 seconds as Rossi continued to narrow the gap between himself and Power. Dixon remained in third followed by Newgarden and O’Ward.

Down to the final 10 laps of the event, Power continued to lead by more than 12 seconds over Rossi while third-place Dixon trailed by more than 15 seconds.

With five laps remaining, Power was leading by eight seconds over Rossi, who continued to close in to Power’s Chevrolet.

When the white flag waved and the final lap started, Power, whose rear tires were wearing out, was leading by two-and-a-half seconds over Rossi, who had Power within his sights. With Rossi unable to mount a final charge as he ran out of turns, however, Power nursed his car back to the finish line in Turn 14 as he beat Rossi by a second for the victory.

The victory was Power’s first checkered flag in the IndyCar Series since winning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course in August 2021, his third at Belle Isle and the 41st of his illustrious career, which moved Power to be one victory behind Michael Andretti for fourth place on the all-time wins list. It also extended Power’s winning streak to 16 consecutive seasons. The victory was also redemption for Power, who dominated the first of two Belle Isle doubleheader events a year ago before a power issue plagued Power’s hopes of winning.

“I just drove [the car] as straight as I could,” Power, who led a race-high 55 of 70 laps and leads the championship standings by three points, said on NBC. “Never put any slip in it. I was just driving it really straight and really nice on the brakes, on the throttle. I knew that if I could keep a reasonable gap to the end, we’d be OK. Man, stellar job by the team. A very enjoyable race because you had to chop through the field and fight hard. Some good passing and really stuck together. The Verizon 5G Chevy in Victory Lane. Man, it’s redemption from last year. I was just waiting for something to happen those last 10 laps, but just stayed laser focused…Man, if you don’t qualify on poles, it’s not the end of it.”

Rossi, whose last IndyCar victory occurred at Road America in June 2019 as he tried to execute a victory on a three-race pit strategy, settled in second place while Dixon, Newgarden and O’Ward finished in the top five.

“I think one more lap would’ve been interesting,” Rossi said. “You got to give credit to the No. 12 guys as well. That’s hard to do at the end, to hang on. Huge thanks to all these boys behind me. The No. 27 NAPA/AutoNation Honda was amazing. Yet again, we come here with an amazing car and can’t quite get the win, but that was a good recovery from yesterday. The strategy was good and we’ll take it. We’re finally executing our potential. It’s been frustrating for a lot of reasons, but the speed’s been there. Just been a lot of factors, but it’s two weeks in a row that this team’s executed in a big way in pressure moments. Big thanks to them and we’ll go into Road America, a place where we’ve had some success. It’d be fitting to come full circle with a win there. Next weekend, we’ll try for that.”

“Going into the race and being one of the lucky few that started on the blacks [tires], you could kind of watch [the race] play out,” Dixon, who completed the event through two pit stops, said. “Kudos to Will [Power]. He drove aggressively at the start, jumped us and he was on the same strategy. Rossi did a hell of a job as well, especially with those reds [tires] on the first stint. It just feels good for the No. 9 to be back on the podium. It’s been a little bit for us and hopefully, we get on a roll here, but kudos to everybody at Honda. It was a fun race.”

Alex Palou, Ericsson, Colton Herta, Pagenaud and Felix Rosenqvist completed the top 10 on the track. Meanwhile, Rinus VeeKay fell back to 16th after wrecking on the final lap.

Sunday’s event marked the 30th and final IndyCar event held at Belle Isle Street Circuit. The IndyCar Series will be returning to the streets of Downtown Detroit, Michigan, in 2023 with a date yet to be announced.

    TEAM CHEVY QUOTES

JOSEF NEWGARDEN, NO. 2 HITACHI CHEVROLET, TEAM PENSKE – POLE WINNER:

YOU SAID IT WAS LOOSE, HOW ON THE EDGE WAS IT?

“It was loose and I was about hitting the wall every lap. Not every lap, but every corner I should say. I think we needed two laps to get temperature and this set was a little better than the first set that I ran. Just struggling to build temp, but it was so loose and I was like, ‘I just got to stay in it’. I knew the track was grippier and that was a good pole. Sometimes the car is just so good that its just hooked up. I was loose today and we put it together. I am really proud of the team and thank you to Team Chevy and Hitachi. In their backyard with Team Penske here. It’s a good spot to start tomorrow, but I have been here before. We did this last year and fell short so we have to be really focused on the race and how we are going to get to the end and finish it off.”

WHERE DO YOU NEED TO BE TO FINISH IT OFF THE RIGHT WAY THIS YEAR?

“Its going to be really difficult. I think this field is so deep nowadays and everyone is good. You just have to be on it all the way from start to finish and understanding the strategy and not having a misstep. Hope we can get it right tomorrow, but I have got always the best of the best behind me with Team Penske.”

YOU MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY

“It was by no means easy. I was almost on the wall in three or four spots just trying to hang on. But this crew is incredible. I love driving for Team Penske and to have Hitachi and Team Chevy right in their back year. It’s good to get a pole, but the win is what we really need, so we are focused on that.”

HOW ARE TIRES GOING TO PLAY OUT TOMORROW?

“I think its going to be a similar case to last year where we learned it was difficult to understand whether you should take your medicine early or late. Seems like the red tires are more fragile. So, it makes it interesting. Do you want durability, or do you want a little speed to start the race? I think we will get that equation in a better spot than last year. We got pipped at the very end of the race, but we can do the job.”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO WIN HERE AT THE HOME OF CHEVROET AND A RACE THAT MEANS SO MUCH TO PENSKE?

“We’ve done it before. I definitely believe we can do it again.”

PATO O’WARD, NO. 5 McLAREN CHEVROLET, ARROW McLAREN SP, QUALIFIED 2ND :

“We had a really solid day. The car was really good on one lap, but we slightly missed the window. I don’t think we made the right call on the tire choice and which red to take for Q3, so we hit a cliff and the tires never really went into the peak. Fifth is good around here, we can work a lot from there. The car is good so tomorrow will be important to see what we can do on a long stint for us to basically help ourselves during the race.

“I love this place. It’s a long race, it’s a physical race. A lot can happen because there’s usually a lot of people making mistakes, so I think the first priority is ‘don’t make a mistake’ and second priority is just ‘try to make your way forward as you can and get a good solid points day.’ “

SCOTT MCLAUGHLIN, NO. 3 GALLAGHER INSURANCE CHEVROLET, TEAM PENSKE, QUALIFIED 10TH:

“It was not to be, but we will push hard tomorrow.”

WE ARE HEARING UP AND DOWN PIT LANE THAT THERE IS NOT MUCH EXPECTATION FOR THE RED TIRES TO HOLD UP LONG. IS THAT YOUR EXPERIENCE TOO?

“It is going to be an exciting Belle Isle, the final Belle Isle. But yes, the red tires don’t hold on for much and its going to be all about looking after them. And even the black tires don’t hold on that much either. So, we will see. Same for everyone, same tires and we will just get on it.”

CONOR DALY, NO. 20 BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING, QUALIFIED 13TH:

HOW DO YOU PROCESS THE SPEED IN THIS SESSION?

“Well, I even decided to go to the bathroom before this session and not eat lunch and I would have thought that would have counted for the last one-hundredth. So, clearly it didn’t but we picked up three seconds from our previous best lap in three laps. We knew this morning’s session was a crock of absolute craziness and we didn’t even get to finish one lap. Thankfully we got a few laps in now and it proves that our car really had the pace that we thought we had in it. I also think Rinus (VeeKay) will be fast here as well, which is great. Thankful for the guys for having the faith in me and just to start 13th here is great. It’s a great position to take advantage of what happens up front and we will go from there.”

TURNING LEFT AND RIGHT AT INDY, IT WAS A GREAT MONTH FOR YOU. HAS THIS TEAM FOUND CONFIDENCE OR SOMETHING?

“Well, if you look at the road course qualifying so far other than the Indy GP, its been a struggle for us. To come out here, a street course, and to get our best street course qualifying of the year, certainly for my side, is good. It definitely means we are doing the right things. Its been an interesting last 24 hours and tough start to the weekend but we know we can race well. So, I am excited for tomorrow.”

RINUS VEEKAY, NO. 21 BITCOIN RACING TEAM WITH BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING, QUALIFIED 14TH:

“I think there was a lot more in it that we didn’t show this morning because there were so many reds and yellows and everything. Yesterday the car felt really good, and so did this morning. But right now, I think the balance is really good on the lap that I did it. We are seven tenths off, so that is way too much.”

SO IF THAT IS THE CASE, HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT THIS MORNING AND HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT YESTERDAY? DO YOU THINK THE RACE PACE IN THIS CAR IS GOOD?

“I don’t know because I haven’t done a long run yet, so we have to see about that in the warm up. I know we can do stuff. with strategy here, but really it is disappointing to qualify in fourteenth place.”

KYLE KIRKWOOD, NO. 14 ROKIT CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING QUALIFIED 15TH:

“You know, my hand is not ideal. I injured it somehow when I hit the wall and didn’t get my hands off the wheel, but it is good enough to drive. Definitely lost some strength in my right hand which hurts us through the left-handers, which there aren’t many here, there is just turn two, turn five and turns nine and ten. So I will just fight through those ones, primarily with my left hand. Its not ideal, but we are digging through it.”

ARE YOU DIGGING THROUGH ANYTHING WITH THE CAR AND ARE YOU WHERE YOU EXPECT TO BE?

“Well, that is one thing in INDYCAR. You lose track time, you usually lose position. So, I am not too wary about it because we are really good on black tires. The red Firestone alternate tires have not been good for us in the qualifying session right now. This race is notoriously a black tire race so hopefully we are strong in the race due to that. We know we can be up front, at least on those tires. Like I said, losing track time doesn’t help anything.”

WILL POWER, NO. 12 VERIZON CHEVROLET, TEAM PENSKE. QUALIFIED 16TH:

CALLUM ILOTT, NO. 77 DYNAMIC EDGE CHEVROLET, JUNCOS HOLLINGER RACING—NOT DRIVING DUE TO HAND INJURY FROM CRASH DURING INDIANAPOLIS 500

“I was a bit stiff from the crash, but the hand is getting less sore each day, but obviously having a broken hand is not the nicest thing because it limits you a little bit. But recovering from that and feeling good. Tuesday, I went to see the specialist because obviously Monday was a holiday for Indiana. But after speaking to the specialist, it was a close one and I think there was a little bit that they weren’t so happy about and the vibrations here wouldn’t have been good. I took their advice and a long-term career is better than a short term glory run. So, the target is to be in the car next week. I will have a review early next week and we will see.”

SANTINO FERRUCCI, SUBSTITUTING FOR ILOTT, QUALIFIED 17TH: “Day two done and in the books. Should have advanced in qualifying, it was a bit of my mistake as I lost the wheel a little bit in the last corner and clipped the wall. But overall we are 17th and I am very confident we can get the car in the top-10 in the race on Sunday and go from there.”

TATIANA CALDERON, NO. 11 ROKIT CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING, QUALIFIED 24TH :

DALTON KELLETT, NO. 4 K-LINE INSULATORS CHEVROLET, AJ FOYT RACING QUALIFIED 25TH:

FELIX ROSENQVIST, NO. 7 VUSE McLAREN CHEVROLET, ARROW McLAREN RACING SP, QUALIFIED 26TH:

NOT THE QUALIFYING SESSION YOU WERE HOPING FOR, WE UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE A QUALIFYING INTERFERANCE PENALTY AS WELL. LET US KNOW HOW THAT PLAYED OUT

“It was our mistake, and we had a little communication error between me and the pit wall. I didn’t know Jimmie was there, so sorry to those guys if I ruined their lap. Obviously, we got a penalty for it. I don’t think we would have made it past 12 anyway. We were just outside, and we went for it on the first lap and maybe not the right strategy there. But anyway, we will find a way to get through the field tomorrow.”

HOW BIG OF A SETBACK HAS THE PRACTICE ONE CRASH PROVEN TO BE?

“For sure a little bit. I think I was pretty on it and felt comfortable. But if you lose the whole session, you will always kind of be on the back foot. Anyways, like last year, we will look forward and move through the field here.”

IS IT UP TO YOU AND THE CAR TO DRIVE YOUR WAY FORWARD?

“It depends on what we think about the reds to be honest. We will have to see in warm up. If you can do a good stint on them, it will change a lot for what you can do in the race. But still, its going to be hard to make it a two stop race.”

    Josef Newgarden

    Press Conference

THE MODERATOR: Driving the Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet, his 16th career NTT INDYCAR SERIES pole position, Josef Newgarden. This is the seventh different pole winner we’ve had this season in 2022.

Congratulations, Josef Newgarden. Saving the best for last there at the end, a little drama.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: And it was not easy. This championship is incredible. These guys are on it this weekend, as you can see. They were very difficult to beat. I thought both of them did a great job, especially David there in the early parts of qualifying. It was very impressive.

I didn’t think we were going to have enough, to be honest. It’s taking us a little too long to build temperature so I really needed two laps. We went for a one to one strategy.

On the second set of tires, I was actually up in 1-2 by a 10th. I thought I’m going to go as hard as possible, I’m either wrecking or I’m putting it on pole.

Fortunately the car was very, very good. It was a little too loose. A couple corners I thought I was actually going to hit the fence. We hung on. Now we get to work toward tomorrow and hopefully have a clean day with Team Chevy and Hitachi.

THE MODERATOR: Tim was fine with that?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I said we need to conjure something today because these guys were so fast. I thought it was going to be a tall order to beat these two. We saved the best tire for last, we just had enough.

I mean, our car was very, very good. I thought the team did an incredible job. It’s just a little bit too loose. I think everybody is dealing with that this weekend. It seems the grip level is not coming up quite as quickly as you would anticipate around here. Normally this place builds, builds, builds, gets easier to drive. I find you’re pretty on the edge this weekend. Track grip is lower than I would anticipate.

You just had to hold on. We were all doing it.

    Q. Josef, it’s important to get pole anywhere, but especially here in Detroit. Chevy’s backyard. Does that add any more significance to this pole?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Certainly special for us. We want to perform well here with all our partners, being Team Chevy’s backyard, to your point. Hitachi, their U.S. headquarters is out of Detroit here. Team Penske, as well, this is our home base.

Our competitor in Honda is always fantastic, very difficult to beat. So it’s never a gimme, it really isn’t. We have to work for every inch on the track.

Yeah, I’m hoping tomorrow we can repeat the performance. Pole is one thing, and it’s great, but the race is a whole different ballgame. Last year we fell just a little bit short. I think that’s where our sights are on, is that race win.

We’ll continue with questions for Josef.

    Q. Josef, the last lap you looked like you were sawing away at the wheel. Really looked like you were evading the police actually. How hairy of a lap was that?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Yeah, that’s a good description, Bruce.

That was one of the most satisfying pole laps I’ve ever had because of the difficulty of it. It was on the edge. It was not easy at all.

Some laps you put together, the car is so hooked up and so good you’re kind of just steering it. Makes it sound a little bit too basic and simple. It feels that way at times.

Today was not that case. It felt like you really had to go and attack and work for it. Like I said earlier, the way I started the lap was so promising. I was up already from the Q2 lap. I said if I can just really push this thing in the middle section of the track, I’m going to try to go for it. If I hit the fence, that’s what it’s going to be today. Fortunately we had just enough to not do that, had plenty of speed to put it on pole.

It was on the edge. Four, five and six, I thought those three corners I was going to hit the wall, and we stayed off.

    Q. If I remember correctly, this is your third pole here at Detroit. Obviously the last year we’re at Belle Isle. Is there something about this track that makes you so quick? Is there a reason you love it? What is one thing you’re always going to remember about this track?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I mean, I like everywhere we go. There’s not really a track… Whether I’ve had more poles or not at a certain place, I don’t prefer one place necessarily over the other.

I do like this track on the calendar. I’m going to miss it. I think it was a fantastic track to drive. It’s very challenging. It’s predominantly concrete.

With that it takes a lot of rubber to build grip. Before that point happens, it’s very slippery. It’s hard to keep it off the fence here. You’ve seen a lot of wrecks here this weekend because of that.

That challenge is something I think all of us enjoy. You’re able as a driver to get more out of it maybe than your competitor. It gives you an area to separate yourself. So I’m going to miss that aspect of going to downtown.

I’m also just equally as excited to see what the downtown track is going to bring. I think from an event standpoint it will be a big plus and I think the track itself will race really well. That’s looking forward.

Yeah, here, we’ve always had good cars here. But I wouldn’t put it above anywhere else. I feel like we can do this performance anywhere we go. It’s not like it’s one place or another that seems to shine for us, at least in my opinion.

    Q. Are the bumps in the same place they’ve always been here or is there always a new bump that pops up?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Yeah, I mean, over the years more bumps have developed from the wintertime here, the cycles of the weather, the heating and thawing. You definitely get movement within the concrete, which is more stable than, say, an asphalt track.

It’s not dramatically different than last year. I would say the track is pretty similar. You get little movement here or there, but it’s always been bumpy. It’s still bumpy today.

    Q. (No microphone.)

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Wow, I mean, if you can’t distinguish them, then you probably need to find a new line of work. You typically know what’s going on. There’s times where a bump offsets a loose moment, and there’s times where it’s the balance of the car, there’s times where it’s a combined effort, where the bump is interacting with a loose balance, just tipping it over.

It’s all encompassing, in my opinion. You’re constantly analyzing is it heave stiffness that we need to change to improve the bump quality, just a balance problem. We were talking about that yesterday and today. It’s not necessarily, The bumps are upsetting the car. Why are the bumps upsetting the car?

Physical aspect of the car, physically bottoming, the mechanical stiffness. There’s a lot of reasons it can be. Sometimes the car is just loose. Sometimes you hit a bump and it gets loose. But it’s both of them.

    Q. Is this one of the toughest places that you guys deal with in terms of tire deg, really having to work to get into windows to get to the number of stops you need?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I think last year this was the outlier as far as the disparity between reds and blacks. I mean, it was a cliff that you’d hit at times on red tires. I think you saw everybody trying to get off of them as quickly as possible.

We obviously took the opposite route. We tried to take our medicine last. It almost worked, you know. I want to point that out. It did almost work. It didn’t, but it almost did.

I was obviously disappointed that we weren’t able to close the deal, but it was a heck of a challenge to try to hold onto that thing at the end of the race. We were going 24, 25 laps on a set of red tires, and they were used reds.

In hindsight maybe we would have done that differently. Also if the race was green all the way throughout, we didn’t have the potential yellow where we stopped early on the first stint, all those things could have maybe changed the outcome. The race happened the way it did, we took maybe a riskier approach.

I think you’ll see a similar race this weekend. It’s hard to say, no one has run the reds for a long stint yet. It certainly seems like the characteristics last year are pretty similar this year.

    Q. I think we’ve got 110 days left in the season. It seems like we have a new points leader after every race. How wide open do you see these last 110 days, the fact that you have the experience to be able to close in a points championship?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: INDYCAR is an interesting championship at the moment because it seems like every weekend there’s a new superstar in the. It’s comical at this point to me.

The reason I think that’s happening is because it’s so competitive. You don’t have one team clearly dominating all sessions. You’re always getting new winners.

So what I mean by that is you get new winners, all of a sudden they are going to be the championship winner, they’re the greatest new thing to come to INDYCAR. It’s just unpredictable. It’s all over the place.

So, yeah, to answer your question, I think it’s pretty wide open. Probably more so this year than last year just the way the points have been jumbled. Indy really tightened everything not just for the top five, but the top 10 is very tight, probably more tight than we’ve seen it in the last couple years.

You’re always going to see that six or seven drivers that tend to bunch up towards the end, that’s your real group for the championship. Right now I think it’s within 10 or 12 drivers, so it’s very open at the moment.

    Q. (No microphone.)

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Gosh, I hope so. We would love to do it again. You got to think we’ve got a little bit of an edge having done this for a while. You can’t predict these things. Every year takes its own shape. It’s hard to draw too many parallels between other seasons just because every championship seems to be a little different.

But I have full confidence that we can be there at the end and seal the deal. It’s just a matter if that’s going to come to fruition or not.

    Q. How did the car go today? You’ve been in this position before. Talk about wanting a different result tomorrow.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Yeah, today was hard. It was harder than last year I would say to get the pole. Sunday last year when we put the car on pole, it was a lot simpler. The car was hooked up, was not loose, just fast. It was easier to guide it to that position.

Today was a real fight. I mean, we really had to work. We almost got knocked out of the Fast Six. In actuality we probably got saved in Q2. I think Dixon probably would have bumped us out if that red didn’t come into play. We just snuck into the Fast Six, then had to really work to get the pole today. I was very, very proud of that.

What that means for tomorrow, I don’t know yet. I think we’ve got a fast car, quick enough to win. It’s just a matter of getting the strategy right, not having any missteps. This field, it’s too difficult to keep everybody behind you nowadays even when you have a fast car. You just can’t make any mistakes. I feel confident we can do the job.

But feeling confident is not enough these days. You got to really go and really make it happen.

    Q. (No microphone.)

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Not really. It doesn’t feel that different, to be honest. Obviously we’ve typically run a race today as well, like you just alluded to. This feels more like a standard INDYCAR weekend. It doesn’t feel like a big departure to us. Just feels like any other race, for the most part.

THE MODERATOR: Chevrolet has been a long time partner with the team. They’ve been sitting on win 99 since their return in 2012. Any thoughts on giving them 100 in their backyard tomorrow?

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: They’ve been sitting on 99?

THE MODERATOR: Since 2012, wins, victories.

    JOSEF NEWGARDEN: Chevrolet?

THE MODERATOR: You can give them 100.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I’m confused. We’re on 99 right now?

    THE MODERATOR: Yes.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: We’ve been sitting it on it for a month.

    THE MODERATOR: Yes.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: I thought you said we were sitting on it since 2012.

    THE MODERATOR: No.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN: That would be great. I’m not a big numbers guy with that stuff. I mean, 99, 100, they’re both fantastic numbers. I don’t know that we’re moving the needle. We’re talking 1% here. Obviously it is a special race for Chevrolet and we’d like to do a great job for them.

I think they’ve done tremendous for us already. If you look at the performance we’ve had across the board, it’s hard to ask for much more. We need to keep that up not just for this weekend but for the rest of the year.

    THE MODERATOR: Congratulations.

JOSEF NEWGARDEN PUTS CHEVROLET ON POLE IN DETROIT
THIRD NTT P1 AWARD FOR TWO-TIME CHAMPION ON BELLE ISLE

DETROIT – Josef Newgarden laid down an on-the-edge lap of one minute 15.2153 seconds, 112.477 mph to grab the NTT P1 Award for the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear on the Raceway on Belle Isle.

It is Newgarden’s 16th career pole, his third on Belle Isle and his first of the season. He has two podium finishes in Detroit-a win in 2019, and a runner-up in 2021.

It is the fifth pole for Team Chevy in 2022.

  • Second Row Lockout for Meyer Shank Racing in Detroit INDYCAR Qualifying

Second Row Lockout for Meyer Shank Racing in Detroit INDYCAR Qualifying

Detroit, Mich. (4 June 2022) – Enjoying its most impressive team qualifying result in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) placed both cars in the second row for Sunday’s Detroit Grand Prix (3:00pm ET, USA Network).

Simon Pagenaud turned in the third-fastest time, running 1:15.395-seconds in the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda while teammate Helio Castroneves was fourth in the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda with a lap of 1:15.453-seconds.

Both MSR drivers scored their first-ever IndyCar victories – Castroneves in 2000 and Pagenaud in 2013 – at the 2.3-mile, 14-turn temporary circuit which is being used for the final time before the Detroit event returns to a downtown layout in 2023.

Castroneves dominated Group 1 qualifying and finished the session at the top of the leaderboard with Pagenaud fifth fastest. Top twelve qualifying saw Castroneves and Pagenaud post their fastest laps of the weekend, cresting into the 1:14-seconds, and advancing into the Firestone Fast Six.

For the first time ever, Meyer Shank Racing had two of its entries in the Firestone Fast Six. Castroneves pushed the No. 06 Honda to the limits, grazing the wall on several occasions. He ultimately put the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda in fourth. Pagenaud was on a pole lap when traffic ahead slowed his progress and he settled with a third place starting position.

The race will be broadcast live on USA Network on Sunday at 3:00pm ET with live IndyCar Radio Coverage on SiriusXM Ch. 160.

    Driver Quotes:

    Helio Castroneves:

“Look, that was a very dodgy session, I’m sure my in-car camera would show it. It was an adventure and there was a lot going on. Great team effort, but we came up just a little bit short there at the end. It was a great run for both myself and Simon (Pagenaud) in the top six which shows how working together can elevate the team to the next level.”

    Simon Pagenaud:

“Fantastic day for the team. We’re starting on the second row with Helio (Castroneves) and he did a great job as well. We had such competitive cars all weekend and I’m glad we were able to perform so well for Meyer Shank Racing. I’m slightly disappointed, because I had to bail out on my pole lap so that I wouldn’t get interfered with Pato (O’Ward) which is quite unfortunate. But I’m really proud of the team and I have high hopes for tomorrow.”

Will final race on Belle Isle be win No. 100 for Chevrolet V6 engine?

DETROIT (June 2, 2022) – Chevrolet will race on home ground this weekend as the NTT INDYCAR SERIES races on Detroit’s Belle Isle for the final time in Sunday’s Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix. It’s the seventh round of this year’s championship with Team Chevy continuing its push for a landmark victory in the series.

The next win for Chevrolet will mark its 100th since it returned to INDYCAR in 2012 with its 2.2-liter, twin-turbo V6 engine. There might be no better place to do it with the GM Renaissance Center overlooking the racetrack and Chevy’s history at the venue.

Chevrolet has won two of the past four races on Belle Isle and seven times since 2012. This year’s race marks the first time for a single INDYCAR race on Belle Isle after doubleheaders for the last nine years – except for the 2020 event that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With four wins on the season, Chevrolet leads the INDYCAR Engine Manufacturer championship, as it has since claiming victory in the season’s first race at St. Petersburg.

This weekend’s race will be the final one on Belle Isle as the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix will move to a new 10-turn, 1.7-mile layout through the streets of downtown Detroit.

“Racing in Detroit is important for everyone at Chevrolet and General Motors,” said Rob Buckner, Chevrolet Program Manager for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. “There are so many employees in Detroit who touch this program in some way that never get a chance to see the end result of all their hard work. So it’s great to race in front of them and give them a good show. It’s great from that perspective, but also to continue the long tradition of open-wheel racing in the Motor City. We’re looking to rebound from Indianapolis in a strong way, and getting our 100th win with the 2.2-liter V6 would do the trick.”

Eleven Chevrolet-powered IndyCars are set to tackle Belle Isle this weekend – including Santino Ferrucci filling in for Callum Ilott in Juncos Hollinger Racing’s Chevrolet-powered IndyCar. One of the leading contenders will be Pato O’Ward in the No. 5 McLaren Chevrolet from Arrow McLaren SP. He won the second of two races on Belle Isle a year ago and is coming off a runner-up finish in the Indianapolis 500 to go along with a win earlier this year at Barber Motorsports Park.

Team Penske teammates Scott McLaughlin (No. 3 Shell Chevrolet) and Josef Newgarden (No. 2 Hitachi Chevrolet) already have claimed street circuit victories this year – McLaughlin at St. Petersburg and Newgarden at Long Beach.

He and Team Penske’s Will Power, in the No. 12 Verizon 5G Chevrolet, are among the other previous Belle Isle winners for Team Chevy. Newgarden was victorious in 2019 and Power won in 2014 and 2016.

While on Belle Isle, Team Chevy fans can enjoy all that the Chevrolet display, located in the heart of the Meijer Fan Zone inside the circuit, has to offer. Included in the display activities will be six Q&A sessions with some of the star Chevrolet drivers and personalities.

    TEAM CHEVY QUOTES

CONOR DALY, NO. 20 BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING: “Detroit is still one of the best street courses on our schedule. It’s a classic venue and the home of Chevrolet as well! Having scored a podium there in the past, the goal is to do that again. We’re on a great streak of momentum right now and I don’t see any reason why we won’t be able to continue that. I’m very excited with the good points we’ve gotten recently and our movement up in the championship standings and ready to get going again!”

RINUS VEEKAY, NO. 21 BITCOIN RACING TEAM WITH BITNILE CHEVROLET, ED CARPENTER RACING: “I am very excited to go to Detroit! We had a really good year there last year, finished second in the first race and qualifying third for Race 2. I think we can do that again, or even be one step higher on the podium! We have a very good car and I believe we put the Month of May behind us. We’ll work hard on the next few races, which are very important. I am also looking forward to trying some Coney dogs.”

SANTINO FERRUCCI, NO. 77 DYNAMIC EDGE CHEVROLET, JUNCOS HOLLINGER RACING: “Although I am happy to be back in the car, it’s unfortunate for Callum under the circumstances. I hope his hand heals really quickly and he is back on track soon. I’m just here to help with the team and see if we can get them a really good result and bring in some different knowledge from my experience in Detroit. I am looking forward to having some fun and carrying the momentum I have from Indy. I can’t thank the guys over at Juncos Hollinger enough with in trusting me this weekend and hopefully it goes really smoothly.”
