Foster Scores Sixth Win of Season, Takes Full Command of INDY NXT Championship

MADISON, Illinois (Saturday, Aug. 17, 2024) – It hasn’t mattered what type of circuit the INDY NXT by Firestone offers, Louis Foster has conquered it, especially recently.

The 21-year-old Andretti Global driver from England won for the sixth time in the past eight series races, making the OUTFRONT Showdown at World Wide Technology his second consecutive oval victory. In this dominating stretch he has claimed three wins on permanent road courses (at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and twice at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca) and another on a street circuit (Detroit).

The sixth win pushed Foster into a tie for 10th place in series history for wins in a season, and his eight career series wins is now tied for seventh all-time. In the past decade, only Kyle Kirkwood (10 wins in 2021), Pato O’Ward (nine in 2018), Oliver Askew (seven in 2019) and David Malukas (seven in 2021) have more frequently been to victory lane.

From the pole, Foster led all 75 laps of this race, and his margin at the finish line – 3.3406 seconds – could have been larger had he pushed his No. 26 Copart/Novara Technologies machine harder.

“I built a really strong gap at the start and then once I realized my pace was really strong we just backed (off) massively,” he said. “I was just massively tire saving kind of halfway through the race.”

A late restart allowed Jacob Abel of Abel Motorsports – and others – to close the gap, but Foster again put them away in short order.

Said Foster: “When the caution came out it wasn’t the best thing in the world, but I knew I had a good car and could pull away again.”

Abel finished second with Abel Motorsports, while teammate Yuven Sundaramoorthy ended third in the best series finish of his career.

“I think we fully maximized it today,” Abel said.

But there has been no keeping pace with Foster, who stretched his series lead to 91 points over Abel with three races remaining. Next up is the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix of Portland on Sunday, Aug. 25. Foster, who won last year’s race from the pole, will have the opportunity to clinch the season championship with a similar performance.

The last two races of the season are on ovals: Aug. 31 at The Milwaukee Mile and Sept. 15 at Nashville Superspeedway.

Saturday’s 75-lap race got off to a bumpy start. The initial green flag was waved off due to the field’s poor alignment. On the first lap at speed, rookie Myles Rowe spun his No. 99 HMD Motorsports with Force Indy car without contact in Turn 2 to bring out the caution.

Just after Foster completed the first full lap under green, an accident behind him sent Andretti Global teammate Jamie Chadwick, the No. 2 qualifier in the No. 28 VEXT entry, and rookie Caio Collet into the inside wall on the frontstretch.

Collet and his No. 18 HMD Motorsports machine were able to continue following repairs, but he was penalized for avoidable contact and blocking. Chadwick’s car was too damaged to continue.

“From my side, I didn’t move,” said Chadwick, who led all 20 laps in the June 9 race at Road America, one of two in the past eight races where Foster finished second. “The margins in this championship are so narrow. We were so close (on the front straightaway). When we race close and well, it’s fine. Obviously, that is just a little too close.”

On Lap 52, Josh Pierson lost control of his No. 14 HMD Motorsports entry as he turned in to Turn 4. The car slid into the wall, hitting with the rear. He, like Chadwick, was not injured.

  • Rosenqvist Finishes Sixth in Wild WWTR Night Race

Rosenqvist Finishes Sixth in Wild WWTR Night Race

Malukas’ podium contending run cut short after contact

MADISON, Ill. (17 August 2024) – On a day when Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) was poised for one of its best events in its NTT INDYCAR SERIES history, Felix Rosenqvist (No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda) emerged from a spate of late-race incidents to finish sixth in Saturday night’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway.

Malukas parlayed his front row starting spot into a very strong race, using speed and quick pit work by the MSR crew to stay in the top three for most of the race. Meanwhile, Rosenqvist stayed in the hunt, making his way into the top 10 by the race’s halfway point.

On a night when multiple pit strategies were in play throughout the field, the race’s biggest move came after a Josef Newgarden spin on Lap 196. The resulting caution saw MSR split its strategy for the first time in the 260-lap race, leaving Malukas out on track with the leaders while Rosenqvist pitted with four of the other top-six cars.

The move appeared to have the team set up for its best tandem result in its history after Malukas pitted for the final time with 43 laps to go while running in the top three. Unsure whether or not the No. 60 car could make the final race distance on its fuel load, Rosenqvist pitted with 23 laps to go – a move that temporarily dropped him a lap to the leaders.

Things went by the wayside soon after though. Seeing an opening under the No. 12 car for what could have been the eventual race lead, Malukas went low to pass and suffered contact that sent him hard into the outside wall and ended his evening.

Unfortunately, the caution meant that the leaders could then pit under the caution, leaving Rosenqvist a lap down. He restarted in 8th and vaulted to sixth after another late-race incident to earn his sixth top-10 finish of the year. Malukas finished 21st but did lead a team season-high 11 laps early in the race.

The series heads to the Pacific Northwest next week for the final non-oval race of the 2024 season, the Bitnile.com Grand Prix of Portland, which takes place at the Portland International Raceway. Qualifying takes place at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday while the race can be seen live on USA Network and Peacock beginning at 3:30 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. All session can be heard live on SiriusXM Channel 218.

    Meyer Shank Racing Team Quotes:

Felix Rosenqvist: “Finished P6, even though we had the penalty and lost nine places going into the race. So I’m pretty happy that we recovered to be in this position, get some good points. It is good to be back in the game. We’ve been really strong all weekend, were second in qualifying, we had a little hiccup in the end there on our final stop will have to look into that. We likely could have been in the mix for a podium without that but it was honestly im happy to have a good weekend and be back in good points and hopefully we can keep this momentum up through the end of the year.”

David Malukas: It’s really unfortunate, we had a really good car today and I really wanted that result. (On the crash with Power) – I had a run, I set it up and I went down to the inside. I gave (Power) as much room as I could and there was room for both cars. I thought it was a good move and I’d do it again.”

Mike Shank: “We had one of our best weekends ever in this series. I think we did everything right, our strategy on both cars during the race was great, we had great cars in qualifying and it’s just unfortunate that we weren’t able to give David the result that we know he and the No. 66 crew deserved. Having Felix get a top six puts us back where we should be and we’re aiming to keep that pace for the final few races.”

  • Double podium for ABEL Motorsports at WWTR

Double podium for ABEL Motorsports at WWTR

    • Jordan Missig earns a top 10 finish in his INDY NXT oval debut

MADISON, Ill. (August 17, 2024) – Fielding its largest race outing with four entries this weekend, ABEL Motorsports put two drivers on the podium in Saturday’s INDY NXT by Firestone OUTFRONT Showdown at World Wide Technology Raceway, with three of the team’s four drivers finishing in the top 10.

Jacob Abel, currently second in the championship title race, brought the No. 51 ABEL Construction Dallara home in second position, with Yuven Sundaramoorthy (No. 22 S Team Motorsports/ABEL Motorsports) in third. Jordan Missig (No. 21 ABEL Motorsports) earned an impressive 10th place finish in his series oval debut, while Taylor Ferns (No. 55 Bradford Allen/ABEL Motorsports) gained a position to finish 15th in her second race in the series.

The field took the green flag with Abel starting sixth, Sundaramoorthy eighth, Missig 15th and Ferns 16th – but the race didn’t stay green for long, as a car spun on the backstretch, bringing out a full course caution. Once back to green, Abel wasted no time making a move into fifth, as Sundaramoorthy captured seventh, with Missig 14th and Ferns 26th.

But two laps later, two cars ahead of Abel came together on the front straight, bringing out a second yellow. Back to green on lap 17, Abel glued himself to the race leader while Sundaramoorthy made the outside pass for fourth – gaining a front row seat for the battle for second ahead, with Abel finally claiming the clear advantage on lap 22.

Missig began his own charge, sliding into P11 on lap 25 as the field settled into a single file run – except for Sundaramoorthy, who made a move on the back straight to capture third position. Unfortunately, Ferns began to experience an issue, ultimately pulling into pit lane on lap 32.

With 23 laps remaining, a car tagged the Turn 4 wall, bringing out another caution – and bunching up the field. The green flew with 15 laps remaining as Missig took ninth with a pass on the inside with 14 laps to go. Three laps later, it was a move on the outside that briefly earned Missig P8, with the battle for position going back and forth each lap.

At the checkered flag, Abel had scored a second-place finish for his seventh podium in 11 races. Sundaramoorthy captured his first series podium in third, with Missig bringing it home in ninth and Ferns 15th.

“I did what I wanted to do on the start,” said Abel. “I basically sent it around the outside but with the yellow, I ended up having to do it again. But we were strong, the car was good, and we got as much as the car had in it today. It was a good day for us and a really good day for the team. We delivered some good race cars for sure; I just need to start a little bit higher next time so we can really get after it.”

“This feels really good, to finally get this podium,” said Sundaramoorthy. “It’s been a long time coming – and hopefully it’s the first of many. It was an incredible race, I love this track. The ABEL team gave me a great car, the 22 was on rails. I was able to make some good moves early around the high side and then at the end of the race, I think we were probably the fastest car in turns one and two, but it was just a little loose in three and four. I’m glad we had the high line, I was expecting to run that line from the start.”

“I think we learned a lot out here,” said Missig. “We definitely got the confidence up, definitely got the experience we were looking for. I felt very racy, very comfortable in the car the entire time. So that was obviously the step one we wanted to get out of the day. But the car was great, the handling was really good. Everything came in when we wanted it to, right when other cars were falling off. If we had to change one more thing, it probably would have been a little bit of gear on our end. We seem to kind of run out a little bit there at the end, trying to make some passes, though obviously, momentum and downforce helped us with some of the passes but to keep those passes, just a bit more gear on the top end would have really helped – so definitely something to note for the future. But I’m really happy with the way my first oval went.”

ABEL Motorsports thanks partners ABEL Construction Company, Advance Ready Mix, Boyd Cat®, S Team Motorsports, Quest Global and OMP for their continued support.

    WHAT THEY’RE SAYING (Quotes):

Santino Ferrucci, No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet:

“Actually, thought I put together two solid laps. driving-wise. I felt very comfortable and very in control, and then just see the number on the dash, and it’s slower than what I had felt we were going for. That’s never a good thing. We have an issue that will take some work to figure out but I’m confident we’ll have a good car for the race.”

Sting Ray Robb, No. 41 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet:

“We were middle of the road. Balance felt great. Car felt very good and consistent. I have a lot of confidence rolling speed into (turns) one and two. I tried to change some stuff up in my driving for (qualifying) and the car just wasn’t there. Conditions did change a little bit, and way more than I was expecting, so that’s a bit frustrating and I feel like we could’ve done a much better job than that. Hopefully, it’s not the worst of the day, but it seemed pretty bad at the end. We’re going to do what we can. This track is very limited on what kind of passing we can do similar to Iowa it seems like. It seems like a single-lane track right now and the tire (degradation) seems fairly low. Not good in a race for the front.”

Pato O’Ward, No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“I think tomorrow will be a different show just like it is every single year. I’m super happy with where we put our race car in the final practice. I think we’re in decent shape to be in the fight tomorrow.”

Nolan Siegel, No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“Overall, I think it was a positive day. The car has very good race pace, and I think we’re going to be able to follow close and pass some people tomorrow, which is good. It was a disappointing Qualifying, obviously, but I think we can make up for it and I’m very happy with where we ended in Practice 2. There are a lot of positives to take away, and we’ll make it count tomorrow when it actually matters.”

Alexander Rossi, No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“Today was the Outback Steakhouse of qualifying and practice. You’re not going to get food poisoning because it’s so horrible, but you don’t really want to go back. I think we were pretty average all the way until Practice 2. It was one of the bigger misses we’ve had in Qualifying in terms of not really understanding what we need to make the car go quick. I think in Practice 2 we made several steps in the right direction. I think as three cars we made steps in the right direction. The caveat to that is it was dark, so the race will end similar to this, but certainly in the beginning it will be more like how the rest of today was. We’ll need to understand very clearly how the ambient conditions for the majority of the race tomorrow are going to affect the car that we’re happy with now.”

Ed Carpenter, No. 20 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet:

“We’re definitely in a better place than we were this race last year. You know, it will be curious to see what it’s like tonight in race trim. The team did a good job bringing us something better than what we had last year. Christian (Rasmussen) did a test here at rookie day and did a really nice job getting us more prepared. I’m definitely much happier and more comfortable than I’ve been here in the past couple the past couple years. Looking forward to practice too, to see what type of race we’re going to put on. I thought it felt pretty decent with the changes that we made. I think with the way people are qualifying, everyone’s trimming a little bit, and it’s really just going to be how you hit the balance.”

Rinus VeeKay, No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet:

“Felt quite similar between the two, both practice and qualifying. The car felt good. Happy with the balance. There are guys trimming a bit more, some a bit less. It’s kind of a question mark today, but I’m happy. I did what I needed to do in that run. The ECR No. 21 crew gave me a good car that gave me confidence to push those entries, to push flat in (turns) three and four. Chevy gave us some great power, too, so hopefully it hangs in there. But I’m satisfied and hopefully we can race well.”

Romain Grosjean, No. 77 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet:

“It’s been really good, to be fair. I think we have great speed. David Malukas’ lap was pretty impressive, to be honest. I was kind of happy where I was, but he’s definitely done a hell of a job there. We’ll see where we are at the end. The race will not be easy to pass, so starting up front will be good. I think Conor (Daly) being with the team with his experience on ovals has been very valuable for all of us. For me, I’m still a young guy on ovals, so still trying to learn from those guys, and I think we’ve been working well together. We tested here ten days ago, and it worked. It went well, it worked well. We’ll see today, but happy with our qualifying.”

Conor Daly, No. 78 Juncos Holilnger Racing Chevrolet:

“First qualifying session with the hybrid. It’s kind of cool to learn how to pick out exactly what percentage you need to use and then how much you can get back in one lap. Here, it’s really interesting because you are almost flat in (turns) three and four. I should have been flat in three and four, but I was scaring myself so…It’s just interesting. Good learning experience for us from the practice session. Not going to be quite enough, but hopefully it keeps us around mid-pack and we should be alright.

“A qualifying run with the hybrid is different. You have to try and be super optimal on that. I didn’t get to qualify at Iowa, so I hadn’t really experienced that yet. We made a good step forward from our practice. I mean, is that enough? I don’t know, but the conditions seem to be very, very volatile. So, I was easy flat in three, four earlier, and (during the qualifying) run, I was like man, that’s a bit a bit different. So we’ll go to work on it. I don’t think we’re going to be in a bad spot, so we’ll see. Just got to thank Chevrolet and Ricardo Juncos and Brad Hollinger, everyone that’s allowed me to be here. It’s really cool.”

Josef Newgarden, No. 2 Team Penske Chevrolet:

“Good. Man, my car was great. I was a little bit shy. We made a really big jump from practice. We kind of went on the safer side of a trim step. Probably could have taken more. Just felt like we were a little behind the eight-ball coming out of practice. Super happy with the PPG Chevy. The team did a great job.”

“It’s a different landscape right now. It’s a totally different car, which I think changes things. Iowa was a different track, plus a different car, and you saw a very different product. So, I think it’s hard to say how the season is going to end, but I certainly believe we can figure it out. It’s just a matter of do we have it fully sorted right now or not? I think we’re pretty close. But we’ll see what time says, but it might take us a little bit more time to get where we want to be.”

Scott McLaughlin, No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet:

“We rolled out of the truck great today. The DEX Imaging Chevy has been great. I’m very proud of the team. We had a procedure and went through it and got it done, and just makes me proud of everyone. But end of the day tomorrow is payday, and we’ll make sure that we were on top of things. But proud of this whole group. And, yeah, we just want them to sleep on us. We’re coming, and I want to make sure I get myself back in this championship. Starting position is huge, and ultimately, getting a pole without going, you know, having an engine penalty as well as a big deal. So that’s what happened last year. And we found out the hard way. You know, being stuck in the middle there is really tough, but we’ll do our best for strategy, find our way forward. And yeah, hopefully we can bring home the win.

Will Power, No. 12 Team Penske Chevrolet:

“Qualifying on these short ovals is bloody tough. You get about a lap and a half to get up to speed and then you need to absolutely nail the lap. It’s intense but that why we love it. The Verizon Chevy has been very solid all day. We’ll get some time this evening to work on race setup in conditions that will be similar to tomorrow. These Team Penske Chevys have speed. Just need to hit on the execution tomorrow.”

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN, No. 3 DEX Imaging Chevrolet – End of Day Press Conference:

THE MODERATOR: Joined by the NTT P1 award winner for the second straight year here at Worldwide Technology Raceway, Scott McLaughlin, driver of the No. 3 Dex Imaging Team Penske Chevrolet. Fourth NTT P1 award of 2024, ninth of his career, back-to-back here at Worldwide Technology Raceway.

Good news is you get to actually start and enjoy pole position tomorrow. Your thoughts on today?

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: Yeah, that’s absolutely a bonus, but the Dex Imaging Chevy was just great from the jump. We had a focus this morning, well, early noon, just to focus on the qualifying car because we knew we only had a short run before qualifying, and we knew how important it is to be at the front here. It went to plan. The car has been great from the jump. We’re in a really good spot, obviously, for tomorrow.

As we know, this is INDYCAR. Anything can happen. But we’ll try to stay on our toes and focus on this last practice session tonight just to get our race balance right, and hopefully we can come with a pretty fast printer wagon for tomorrow.

    Q. What was the feel of the car for practice, and now that you have pole, how relieved are you for starting up there with how difficult it seems everyone is thinking it’s going to be tough to pass here tomorrow?

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: Yeah, look, we’ll find that out in race balance here in a little bit, but I think it’ll be pretty reasonable. Car, as I said, straight out of the hauler was awesome. I think we’re in a really good spot, obviously, for tomorrow, to maybe make some points back here, and there’s no doubt in my mind that we can put ourselves back in the hunt with a good result tomorrow. That’s our big focus right now.

But yeah, proud to get the pole, and I actually forgot the last half of your question.

    Q. For high line practice later on, do you think that’ll create a big difference for tomorrow?

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: We’ll see. I mean, it can’t hurt, that’s for sure. More downforce on the cars this year. I think they’ve made all the necessary steps to help that.

You certainly hope so for the race sake.

But I still think it’s going to be somewhat of a track position race, but I think if we can do this high line practice and then with the extra downforce, who knows what will happen, and I’m sure the restarts are going to be pretty hectic, as well, so that’s always good fun.

    Q. Looking at this championship, you’ve got a good amount of ground to make up but also four short ovals where you’ve run particularly well over your career. Do you still feel like you’re part of this championship run at 83 back?

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: Yeah, yeah, for sure. Yeah, 100 percent. There’s no doubt I’ve come from basically the back at the start of this year, and we’ve found ourselves in position in less races. There’s anything that can happen in this sport. It takes one bad race from Palou, and everyone is jumping down his neck.

I think we’re well in reach to get there if we can perform well on the ovals, which I know I feel comfortable on the ovals now. There’s no doubt in my mind we can get there. Yeah, 100 percent confidence.

    Q. Do you feel like this is the track that you feel most confident among the three ovals? I know Nashville, Milwaukee, a lot of folks, including you, have never run at. Is this an extra important one given your history and experience here?

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: Yeah, Milwaukee we finished quickest at the test. I felt pretty good there. I feel like from an oval perspective, it’s a very comfortable position. It doesn’t take thankfully too long to learn some ovals, so Nashville — I think a lot of people are going to be learning it, and I feel like I can get on top of it as best as anyone, but you’ve got to have that confidence in yourself, that ability, and hopefully we can put ourselves in position over these next coming races.

This one, we take it bit by bit. I don’t really care. I just drive the car and hopefully we’re quick, and I think we’ll be okay.

    Q. It seems like you guys have adapted to the hybrid on the ovals better than anyone else. Is that because you guys have pretty much tested it more than a lot of people? You were a key team for Chevrolet during the off-season.

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: I didn’t think there was much to adapt to, to be honest. The hybrid is there, yes, but we’re not using it probably nearly as much as the road courses, street courses, and from the looks of it, from what you see on TV and data and all that stuff, everyone has got the same process, the way they go about it.

No, I don’t think we — for sure from a driving perspective, it was nice to feel the weight of the car and stuff and having that opportunity to do that, but I think as a team, it’s very well documented — I think INDYCAR have been great, very fluid with the situation and transparent to all the teams up and down pit lane, and I think it’s why you’ve probably seen it run reasonably smoothly.

    Q. But it seems your team has adapted to it better with the weight, the extra weight. The setup seems to be better than everybody else.

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: I debate that. Look, on the oval, yeah, maybe. We’ve always been strong at Iowa. But Herta got a pole there, I got a pole there. Here we got pole. We got pole last year.

I always feel like we’ve got fast cars, which is an added bonus at the start, and then you add the weight. It’s just weight. You’ve just got to try and adapt to it, and everyone has got very smart engineers up and down pit road that can adapt to that and understand what we need to do to get to that point.

Sure, it was nice to drive the car a little bit over the off-season, but I think when we got to this point, it’s every man for themselves.

    Q. I believe the last four visits on ovals you’ve taken at least one of the poles. What has clicked for you in the last year with regards to qualifying on ovals?

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: Yeah, me and Benny were talking about it, my engineer. Our average must be pretty cool since we’ve started working together. From ’22 onwards, even ’21, I’ve felt strong, but it’s just nice to have the confidence in the race car you’re driving. The team give me a great car, and I’m able to just execute the way I want to.

I think I like oval qualifying because it replicates a little bit — might sound weird, but it does replicate Supercars in some ways and the top-10 shootouts we used to do back there and all that sort of stuff. Getting my tires up to temp and trusting the tires into Turn 1 or whatnot, it’s been a strong suit of mine in the past, and probably a little bit more aggressive in that regard, but yeah, I really enjoy it.

Love ovals. I think it’s the backbone of our series, and I’ve enjoyed having a lot more on the schedule, or at least a couple more this year.

    Q. You said you have some sort of procedure you run. Can you go into detail a little bit more?

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: I cannot go into detail, but I made a mistake, but I thankfully held on. I thought that was probably going to what what maybe Will or Palou could have got me on, but yeah, it was just something that — it’s part of my process just with the car.

    Q. These procedures you’re talking about, and I’m watching drivers, does it feel like you’re doing the AABB up-down-up-down thing like it’s a video game?

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: Yeah, lucky I play a lot of Call of Duty, so I sort of feel like I’m pretty good with hand movements and looking around. For sure. It’s a lot going on, especially short oval qualifying. But even like in street courses at Toronto and stuff.

But I think if you talk to people up and down pit road we’ve actually enjoyed that. It’s been quite fun, and it’s rewarding when you do a good job or it works out in your favor.

Yeah, I’ve enjoyed it, but there’s a lot more to do than there used to be.

Foster Keeps Rolling, Wins Pole at World Wide Technology Raceway

MADISON, Illinois (Friday, Aug. 16, 2024) – Louis Foster’s march toward an INDY NXT by Firestone championship continued in qualifying at World Wide Technology Raceway.

The English driver in Andretti Global stable continued his dominating summer by earning the pole for Saturday’s OUTFRONT Showdown (3:55 p.m. ET, Peacock, INDYCAR Radio Network), and he did in record fashion. Both timed laps were quicker than any of those turned by opponents in the session, and the combination gave Foster a track-record average of 164.109 mph at the 1.25-mile oval. Foster’s second lap was his best: 164.242 mph.

The series’ one- and two-lap qualifying records had stood since 2017 when Juan Piedrahita averaged 161.354 mph and 160.823 mph, respectively. Thirteen of the 18 drivers in this event eclipsed his two-lap average.

Since finishing the first three races of the season in the third, fifth and seventh positions, Foster has been on an incredible roll. He won the second race of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course doubleheader on May 11 and has pushed his season total to five wins and five poles.

The driver of the No. 26 Copart/Novara Technologies entry holds a 77-point lead over his nearest challenger – Jacob Abel of Abel Motorsports – and this pole will add another point to his total. But he said he’s not stopping to count points now. Four races remain.

“I just want to keep winning races, man,” Foster said. “We’ll see what happens. Obviously, make good decisions in the race and finish with the (maximum number of) points, but my main goal is to win.”

This will be the 11th race of the season and the second on an oval track, and Foster won the July 13 race at Iowa Speedway. He led the final six laps of that race, overtaking pole winner and teammate James Roe in the late going. Foster finished second to eventual series champion Christian Rasmussen in this event last year.

Foster will be joined on the front row Saturday by another teammate, fellow English driver Jamie Chadwick. She posted a two-lap qualifying average of 163.505 mph in the No. 28 VEXT entry.

HMD Motorsports drivers Caio Collet and Christian Brooks – both in their first year in the series — will start in the third and fourth positions, respectively.

BIG MAC ATTACK: MCLAUGHLIN WINS NTT INDYCAR SERIES POLE FOR BOMMARITO AUTOMOTIVE GROUP 500

    • Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin lands series-best fourth pole of the season and second in a row at World Wide Technology Raceway
    • Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist qualifies on front row for third time this season but will start 12thdue to starting grid penalty
    • INDY NXT by Firestone championship leader Louis Foster secures series-leading fourth pole for OUTFRONT Showdown.

MADISON, Ill. (August 16, 2024) – Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin captured his second consecutive pole at World Wide Technology Raceway and series-leading fourth of the season during Friday’s NTT INDYCAR SERIES qualifying for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500.

McLaughlin posted a two-lap average of 179.972 miles per hour (50.0079 seconds) on the 1.25-mile oval to unseat Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist by .0489 of a second for the top starting position in Saturday’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline (5:30 p.m. CT, TV: USA Network, Peacock. Radio: INDYCAR Radio Network, SiriusXM Radio).

McLaughlin extended his dominance this season in oval qualifying with his fourth front-row start in as many races, including two other poles. Previously, he won the NTT P1 Award at the Indianapolis 500 and first race at Iowa Speedway before settling for second at the finale of that doubleheader.

“From ’22 onwards, even ’21, I felt strong (on ovals), but it’s just nice to have the confidence in the race car you are driving,” said McLaughlin, who arrived at INDYCAR in 2021 with no oval experience after winning three Australian V8 Supercars championships. “The team gave me a great car. I’m able to just execute the way I want to. I think I like oval qualifying because it replicates – it may sound weird – Supercars in some way and the Top 10 Shootouts we did back there. You know, getting your tires up to temp and trusting the tires into Turn 1 or what not. It’s been a strong suit of mine in the past and probably a little bit more aggressive in that regard.

“I really enjoy it – love ovals. I think it’s the backbone of our series.”

Meyer Shank Racing took the next two positions with Rosenqvist qualifying second (179.796 mph / 50.0568 secs.) and teammate David Malukas third (179.503 mph / 50.1385 secs.). Rosenqvist earned his third front-row start of the season, which includes a pole at Long Beach, but will start 11th due to a nine-position starting grid penalty. The penalty was for an unapproved engine change penalty at the previous race in Toronto. Malukas matched his season-best qualifying performance, which came at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

“We had 12 cars after we rolled out so, obviously, I was kind of expecting someone to break through,” Rosenqvist said. “It always seems like me and Scott are fighting for it. I think it is the fourth or fifth time we’ve been fighting for the pole.

“It was a really good run. You could feel it was well executed, good balance, everything was good with the tools and the car feeling.”

McLaughlin’s teammates closed out the top five with Josef Newgarden, a four-time winner at WWT Raceway, qualifying fourth (179.424 mph / 50.1605 secs.) and Will Power, who won at this venue in 2018, taking fifth (179.262 mph / 50.2059 secs).

Radio: INDYCAR Radio Network, SiriusXM Radio). Foster, a five-time winner this season, won the pole with an INDY NXT by Firestone track-record, two-lap average of 164.109 miles per hour. • McLaughlin Roars to Back-to-Back Poles at World Wide Technology Raceway

McLaughlin Roars to Back-to-Back Poles at World Wide Technology Raceway

MADISON, Illinois (Friday, Aug. 16, 2024) – Team Penske’s Scott McLaughlin earned his second consecutive NTT P1 Award at World Wide Technology Raceway, and this time he gets the prime race starting position that goes with it.

A year ago, McLaughlin’s terrific qualifying run was tempered by a penalty for an unapproved engine change, knocking him nine places deeper in the starting order for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline. That penalty proved to be significant as the NTT INDYCAR SERIES driver struggled in traffic, and he finished in fifth place.

Those fears won’t be present when McLaughlin takes the green flag in the No. 2 DEX Imaging Team Penske Chevrolet, but that’s not his focus. He seeks the third win of the season following victories at Barber Motorsports Park and Iowa Speedway, and he has a championship to chase.

“At the end of the day, tomorrow’s payday,” McLaughlin said of the 260-lap race that airs live on USA Network, Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network. “We’ll make sure we’re on top of things.”

With a two-lap average of 179.972 mph, McLaughlin earned his fourth pole of the season and the ninth of his career, and this one puts him in a strong position to make a dent in the 83-point deficit he faces for the series title. Two drivers ahead of him in the standings, including series leader Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing, will have one of those nine-grid penalties that hampered him in last year’s race.

Palou qualified seventh at 178.363 mph in the No. 10 Samaritan Purse Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, and teammate Scott Dixon, who drives the No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, will be moved back nine spots to begin the race. Dixon qualified 10th at 177.905 mph. The six-time series champion won last year’s race by 22.2 seconds.

Meyer Shank Racing’s Felix Rosenqvist, who had the second-best qualifying performance at 179.796 mph, also will incur such a penalty.

Another benefactor of the post-qualifying movement will be David Malukas, who has scored a pair of top-three finishes at this 1.25-mile oval each of the past two years. The third-fastest qualifier at 179.503 mph will start a career-best second in Meyer Shank Racing’s No. 66 AutoNation/Arctic Wolf Honda.

Meyer Shank Racing has a technical alliance with Andretti Global, which had the three fastest cars in the recent eight-car test at this track. Kyle Kirkwood used some of that knowledge gained to earn the best oval qualifying performance of his career — sixth at 178.417 mph — in the No. 27 AutoNation Honda, the best oval effort of his career. Teammate Marcus Ericsson qualified ninth at 178.114 mph in the No. 28 Delaware Life Honda.

Colton Herta was bidding for his second consecutive pole and fourth in the past eight races when his No. 26 Gainbridge Honda spun lazily through Turn 1 on his second lap. The impact was relatively square with the rear, but the Andretti Global with Curb-Agajanian driver was left with the 25th qualifying position. Dale Coyne Racing teammates Jack Harvey (No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda) and Katherine Legge (No. 51 e.l.f. Cosmetics Honda) did not post times.

“It just broke loose,” Herta said of the car. “(It’s) unfortunate. I think that first lap was decent – I don’t think it was going to get us the pole, but I think it could have got us in the top five. Second lap, I don’t if we wore the tires too much or what happened. (The grip) just let go pretty early and that’s all she wrote.”

Saturday’s race is the first of five races to end the season, and with 54 points available it could go a long way to setting the tone for the frenetic stretch run. Palou leads Team Penske’s Will Power by 49 points in pursuit of his third series championship in the past four years. Power, who qualified fifth at 179.262 mph in the No. 12 Verizon Business Team Penske Chevrolet, also is driving toward a third series title.

Dixon, Herta and Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward round out the top five in the standings. They are 53, 57 and 71 points behind Palou, respectively. O’Ward qualified 11th at 177.160 mph in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet.

Josef Newgarden (No. 2 PPG Team Penske Chevrolet) has won this event a record four times, and he will start Saturday’s race from the third position after posting a qualifying average of 179.424 mph. Besides Dixon, Power is the only other active driver to have won this event.

CHEVROLET LOOKS TO CONTINUE OVAL WINNING WAYS AT WORLD WIDE TECHNOLOGY RACEWAY

    • With five wins in eight events since the 2017 return to World Wide Technology Raceway, Chevrolet looks to add a sixth this weekend in the Bommarito Automotive Group 500.
    • Four of the five wins have come from Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden, winning in 2017, 2020 (Race 2), 2021, and 2022. Additionally, his teammate Will Power holds the fifth victory, taking the checkered flag in 2018.
    • Team Chevy also holds six NTT P1 Pole Awards at the 1.25-mile egg-shaped oval, in addition to 15 podium finishes and 1,176 laps led.
    • Chevrolet has also swept the podium twice located near St. Louis, with a top-four finish sweep by the Bowtie brand in 2022’s Race 2 and a top-five lockout in 2021.
    • Chevrolet looks to score a fourth victory in five events in the new 2.2-liter twin turbo V6 with hybrid technology era at World Wide Technology Raceway after winning the debut in Mid-Ohio, Iowa 1, and Iowa 2.
    • Chevrolet has claimed a win on every oval track to date in 2024, and four of the five in the 2023 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season.

DETROIT (August 14, 2024) – With five races left in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship, Chevrolet looks to capitalize on seven wins so far this season that includes the 108th Running of the Indianapolis 500, as well as 18 podium finishes, and 666 laps led in the 12 points-earning events thus far heading to World Wide Technology Raceway for this weekend’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500.

“We’re looking to close out the remaining NTT INDYCAR SERIES season strong heading to World Wide Technology Raceway this weekend,” said Rob Buckner, Chevrolet INDYCAR Program Manager. “The track will provide a challenge different than Iowa, and with solid preparation for the upcoming double header weekend in Milwaukee. With varying degrees of banking in each corner and proven Chevrolet high-speed oval engine reliability, we’re looking forward to heading to World Wide Technology Raceway on Saturday evening.”

The Bommarito Automotive Group 500 is the fifth race in the new 2.2-liter twin turbo V6 era with hybrid technology after Chevrolet successfully captured the win in the introductory event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in early July. With Chevrolet winning three of the four races so far with the new hybrid technology, Team Chevy looks to leverage that momentum heading into the weekend near St. Louis. Additionally, Chevrolet looks to continue its winning ways after racing to victory lane in each oval race so far this season in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.

After an extensive in-season break for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Team Chevy’s engineers, drivers, and teams are ready to tackle the 1.25-mile/2.01-kilometer egg-shaped oval near St. Louis. Aiming to add to five wins Chevy already holds since the 2017 return to the track, the Bowtie brand also has six NTT P1 Pole Awards, as well as 15 podium finishes, and 1,176 laps led at World Wide Technology Raceway. Chevrolet has additionally swept the podium twice since 2017, in 2020’s Race 2 where Team Chevy claimed the top four positions, as well as in 2021 with a top-five lockout held by the Bowtie brand.

Leading the field in Saturday evening’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500, the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 convertible in beautiful Red Mist Metallic will once again pace the NTT INDYCAR SERIES to the green flag at World Wide Technology Raceway.

The Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway kicks off the two-day show with first practice on Friday, Aug. 16 at 1:30 p.m. ET, followed by qualifying at 5 p.m. ET and final practice at 8:30 p.m. ET. The 260-lap, 500-kilometer main event Saturday night takes the green flag live on USA Network at 6 p.m. ET. All practice and qualifying sessions broadcast with Peacock, INDYCAR Radio, and SiriusXM Channel 218.

    WHAT THEY’RE SAYING (Quotes):

Santino Ferrucci, No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet:

“Man, I’ve had some success (at World Wide Technology Raceway) in the past. It’s been a fun track. I love that it was a night race when I started in the series. I’m happy to see it going back to a night race-ish, but, yeah, it’s just a good city, good food, great people, and it’s always been a good event.”

Sting Ray Robb, No. 41 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet:

“(World Wide Technology Raceway) is a very fun oval. It’s fast but you still have to drive the car in a sense. The dynamic of the different corners makes it interesting for balancing the car one end of the track to the other. It seems to race decently, even though the second lane is almost non-existent after longer runs.”

Pato O’Ward, No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“I’m looking forward to get going with this last stretch of the season. St. Louis is always an exciting race, and I’ve had some success here in the past. Hopefully we can kick off this last stretch with a bang and fight our way closer to the top of the championship.”

Nolan Siegel, No. 6 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“I’m looking forward to racing at World Wide Technology Raceway. It’s a track I’ve been to before, and it’ll be the first time I’ll be racing in this series on a track that I’ve tested previously. The Iowa doubleheader was a very positive weekend for us, so I think we’re continuing the lay a good base to build on. This weekend is another good opportunity to produce a solid result.”

Alexander Rossi, No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet:

“It’s been a long summer break, but it obviously came at just the right time for me after the injury in Toronto. I’m thrilled to be back in the car for St. Louis and looking forward to kicking off this final stretch in a positive way at one of our best tracks.”

Gavin Ward, Team Principal at Arrow McLaren:

“We’re heading to St. Louis having beat the blues with a rejuvenating Olympic break. We’re elated that Alexander (Rossi) was given the thumbs up to return to racing this weekend. Let’s hope this turn of good fortune is the gateway to further success. Pato (O’Ward) has finished on the podium four out of the five times he’s raced at this track, so we’re aiming to rack up more than just ribs but also more trophies this weekend.”

Ed Carpenter, No. 20 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet:

“I am always excited to get back to Worldwide Technology Raceway. The track has been such a great partner to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES since they rejoined the schedule. After having two sub-par outcomes at Iowa, I am looking forward to building momentum for the final stretch of races to close out 2024.”

Rinus VeeKay, No. 21 Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet:

“I am very happy that we had a few weeks off, but I am really excited to go racing again and start the final stretch of the season! Christian (Rasmussen) tested at WWT Raceway a couple weeks ago and was fast, so we should have strong cars right away. Having Ed (Carpenter) back in the No. 20 will be good, it is always fun to race with the boss. Hopefully we can keep our streak of Top 10 finishes on ovals going!”

Romain Grosjean, No. 77 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet:

“Excited to be back racing. St. Louis is a nice place and where I did my first oval race back in 2021. Let’s finish our season on a high note.”

Conor Daly, No. 78 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet:

“St Louis is attractive. I have loved the track since we first started going there. It provides a great opportunity for a great race and my driving style seems to suit to so I’m excited to get back there after a promising test with this Juncos Hollinger Racing team.”

    • NTT INDYCAR SERIES returns from three-week break following the Olympics
    • Two-time series champion Alex Palou still chasing first career oval victory
    • Arrow McLaren Racing’s Alexander Rossi cleared to return following thumb surgery

MADISON, Ill. (August 14, 2024) – The Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline at World Wide Technology Raceway represents the much-anticipated return of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES following the Olympics break and one of the final five races in the 17-event season that will determine the series champion.

Following a three-week layoff, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES is center stage once again with its first race since Sunday, July 21, when Colton Herta of Andretti Global with Curb/Agajanian won on the streets of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Saturday’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline will be the first of four oval races in the final five events of the season. The series will head to the only road course in that stretch next week – Portland International Raceway on Aug. 25 – before closing out with a doubleheader at The Milwaukee Mile (Aug. 31 – Sept. 1) and the season finale at Nashville Superspeedway (Sept. 15).

World Wide Technology Raceway could be an early indicator on which drivers will have the edge on short ovals, especially those in contention for the championship.

The two-day show opens Friday with a pair of NTT INDYCAR SERIES practices and pole qualifying to set the field. The series will begin with a one-hour practice beginning at 11:45 a.m. CT and follow with knockout-style qualifying at 3:20 p.m. The INDYCAR stars return in the evening for a final one-hour practice beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The weekend culminates with Saturday evening’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline, beginning at 5:30 p.m. (TV: USA, Peacock, Radio: INDYCAR Radio Network, SiriusXM).

Here’s “Five Things To Watch” for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline:

    1. Two-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Alex Palou is in position for a third title, but will have to successfully navigate a run of four ovals in the final five races, beginning with the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline at World Wide Technology Raceway’s 1.25-mile layout.

Despite two championships, 11 wins and 30 podiums in 76 career races, the fifth-year superstar with Chip Ganassi Racing has yet to win on an oval. In 23 career oval starts, Palou has just four podium finishes, but has made progress with half of those coming this season (fifth at the Indy 500, second at Iowa Speedway). However, he has been very consistent top-10 finisher with 14 of those efforts.

The first challenge comes at World Wide Technology Raceway, where he has a pair of top-10 finishes in five career starts. Those have come in his last two visits, with a ninth in 2023 and seventh last season. However, he has started among the top 10 just once (fifth in 2022) and has yet to lead a lap.

Palou’s two closest competitors in the championship – Team Penske’s Will Power and CGR teammate Scott Dixon – have combined for 35 oval victories in their respective careers and are previous winners at World Wide Technology Raceway.

Power, who trails Palou by 49 points, owns 10 oval wins, including one at World Wide Technology Raceway in 2018. Dixon, who is 53 points behind his teammate, has 25 oval victories, including a pair at this track. His first came in the 2020 doubleheader and the six-time series champion added another last season. The latter was a dominant performance as Dixon’s 22.2256-second margin of victory established the track record for an INDYCAR race.

Colton Herta of Andretti Global with Curb/Agajanian is fourth in the series championship, trailing Palou by 57 points. He is coming off his first win of the season at Toronto and, like Palou, is still seeking his first career oval victory.

    1. Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden has found a second home in Madison, Ill.

Since the NTT INDYCAR SERIES returned to World Wide Technology Raceway in 2017, Newgarden has dominated the 1.25-mile oval with four wins in eight career starts over that span. His inaugural one came in that first season back and then he added three in a row from 2020 (second race of the doubleheader) to 2022.

Newgarden only has finished outside of the top seven twice, including last year when he finished 25th due to contact after leading 98 of the 210 laps he completed. He has led 48 or more laps in all but two of his starts and holds the track mark for that category with 582.

Newgarden also has recorded two poles, the most recent coming last season, and has started outside the top three just once (sixth, 2020-1st race).

    1. Arrow McLaren Racing’s Alexander Rossi, who missed the previous race at Toronto due to a fractured right thumb, has been cleared by the INDYCAR medical team to compete in this weekend’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline.

Rossi sustained the injury during a July 19 practice incident at Toronto and was replaced for the remainder of the race weekend by Theo Pourchaire, who finished 14th. Rossi, in the meantime, underwent successful surgery and took full advantage of the break in the schedule to recover.

Prior to missing Toronto, Rossi had been on a bit of roll with finishes of eighth or better in six of his previous eight races, including a season-best third at Laguna Seca. He is ninth in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship standings, one point behind Josef Newgarden.

Arrow McLaren announced in early July that Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Christian Lundgaard would be replacing Rossi in the No. 7 Chevrolet beginning next season. Rossi is expected to be a highly sought-after free agent and his ability to return and exhibit that he is fully recovered from the injury should only enhance his value to another organization.

In last season’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline, Rossi qualified seventh and finished fourth. It was his third top-six finish in eight starts at World Wide Technology Raceway.

    1. Two drivers to keep an eye on who have yet to win at World Wide Technology Raceway are Arrow McLaren Racing’s Pato O’Ward and Meyer Shank Racing’s David Malukas.

O’Ward has been so, so close with runner-up finishes in three of his last four starts at World Wide Technology Raceway. He also is a perfect five-for-five in his career for top-five finishes at the venue. O’Ward has started among the top seven in every visit, including a best of second in the first race of the 2020 doubleheader.

Malukas only has made two previous appearances – both with Dale Coyne Racing with HMD Motorsports – and posted podium finishes in both. He finished runner-up in 2022 and followed with a third-place performance last season. The second-place finish remains a career-best performance for the third-year driver.

Also, Malukas put an end Tuesday to the speculation of where the free agent was going to wind up for the 2025 NTT INDYCAR SERIES season. AJ Foyt Racing announced that the organization has signed the 22-year-old American to a multi-year deal.

    1. Team Penske has swept the ovals thus far this season, with Josef Newgarden winning the Indianapolis 500 and teammates Scott McLaughlin and Will Power taking the doubleheader at Iowa Speedway.

Newgarden and McLaughlin, along with Pato O’Ward, are the only drivers to record podium finishes in two of the three oval races, but there is just one driver who has been able to post top-five finishes in all three.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon opened with a third-place finish in the Indy 500 and added fourth-place performances at Iowa.

Dating to the 2021 season, Dixon is just one of three drivers with multiple wins in the 17 oval races competed during that span, which includes this year. Newgarden dominates with nine while Dixon and O’Ward have two each.

Experience is key as ABEL Motorsports heads to World Wide Technology Raceway

All four team drivers have raced on the oval before – though three will see their first action in an INDY NXT car at the Madison, Ill. track

Taylor Ferns set for the “double” – contesting both the USAC Silver Crown race and the INDY NXT event

SPEEDWAY, Ind. (August 13, 2024) – ABEL Motorsports will field its largest team of the season in this weekend’s INDY NXT by Firestone’s OUTFRONT Showdown at World Wide Technology Raceway, with four cars set to take the green flag Saturday afternoon.

Jacob Abel (Louisville, Ky.), Yuven Sundaramoorthy (Oconomowoc, Wis.), Taylor Ferns (Shelby Township, Mich.) and Jordan Missig (Joliet, Ill.) all have experience on the 1.25-mile oval, located just across the Mississippi river from downtown St. Louis, Mo.

Abel has three USF Pro 2000 races and two INDY NXT races on the oval and has delivered improving results each season, with four top 10s finishes, while Sundaramoorthy and Missig both raced at WWTR two years ago in USF Pro 2000. Missig will make his INDY NXT oval debut this weekend.

While Ferns will race the No. 55 ABEL Motorsports Dallara at WWTR for the first time, the USAC veteran has raced at the 1.250-mile oval twice (2022 and 2023, and she tested there at age 16), all in her Silver Crown car. In 2022, she was pacing in the top three and looking for a podium, but a radiator issue with six laps remaining put her back in ninth at the checkered flag.

All four drivers tested on the Nashville Superspeedway last week, which puts them back into the oval mindset following the NTT INDYCAR SERIES’ “summer break” during the Paris Olympics (broadcast on NBC).

“It’s not your typical oval, because the two ends of the track are obviously pretty drastically different,” noted Abel. “Turns 1 and 2 are very tight and you end up lifting and downshifting, whereas 3 and 4 are two of the highest speed corners we race on. But it should be close to flat the whole race, which will be interesting. It presents a unique challenge because you need a different balance for both. We were good there last year, and we raced strong. We’re ready to get going after this break, with the first race of this final stretch, setting up a strong finish for the end of the season.”

“It’s nice that I’ve raced there several times before,” said Sundaramoorthy. “Of course, it would have been nice to test there, but I think we’ll still be pretty fast, the car was fast last year. It’s just going be the same as everywhere else: head down, just figure it out. The track has raced well in the past – two years ago, I was able to go two and three-wide, so it should be a good race.”

“I’m looking forward to going back there – it’s a good track for my oval debut,” said Missig. “I like the big ovals and I’m excited to see what it’s going to be like in the INDY NXT car, compared to the USF Pro 2000 car. I know there will be a substantial difference, but I know the ABEL Motorsports guys will be ready. I’m looking forward to getting some oval experience now with an eye toward next season, so that is one of the keys. Having the test last week at Nashville helped get me into the oval mindset, since it’s a very different driving style, so that gives us just that little bit more confidence going into this weekend.”

“I’m excited to get there and get more seat time in the INDY NXT car,” said Ferns, who will look to build on her Iowa INDY NXT debut last month. “I know it’s going to be much different than racing in the Silver Crown car – from the racing lines to the driving style. I’m excited to try that out and I’m ready for the challenge.”

Ferns is also ready for the challenge of competing in two very different races on the weekend. She will contest Friday’s 75-mile Ranken Technical College Silver Crown Shootout Presented by Welsch Heating & Cooling, and Saturday’s 75-lap INDY NXT by Firestone OUTFRONT Showdown.

“Racing is my passion, so I just didn’t feel right not doing it in the end,” said Ferns, who finished fourth in the Silver Crown main event last Saturday at Jennerstown (Pa.) Speedway. “The INDY NXT car is my focal point, but I think there’s just a natural intuition with the Silver Crown car – so I am skipping Silver Crown practice and qualifying in order to focus on the INDY NXT sessions, then doing Friday night’s race from the back of the field. I don’t have a problem passing cars so hopefully we can put on a good show.”

ABEL Motorsports thanks partners ABEL Construction Company, Advance Ready Mix, Boyd Cat®, S Team Motorsports and OMP for their continued support.

The INDY NXT by Firestone’s OUTFRONT Showdown takes the green flag Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET. The race will be streamed live in the U.S. on Peacock, while international viewers can watch via INDYCARLIVE, with INDYCAR Radio available at indycar.com and on Sirius XM.
