  • NHRA’S BECOME A RACER PROGRAM THE IDEAL WAY TO JUMP INTO DRAG RACING

NHRA’S BECOME A RACER PROGRAM THE IDEAL WAY TO JUMP INTO DRAG RACING

INDIANAPOLIS (May 6, 2024) – NHRA’s “Become a Racer” program provides a great opportunity for those interested to become a participant at NHRA Member Tracks across North America. Through the Street Legal program, everyone can take their car from the street to the track, get licensed and race in a legal and controlled environment where racers of all skill levels can enjoy the sport of NHRA drag racing.

Since its formation in 1951, NHRA has worked to combat and eliminate the dangerous and illegal practice of street racing. It remains one of the key missions for NHRA to this day and the Street Legal events, held regularly at the 100-plus NHRA Member Tracks, offer the perfect setting to not only fight illegal street racing, but also feature an ideal setting for competitors of all levels of experience to participate.

For just $65, a participant can sign up to earn their NHRA License and break into the Street Legal club, driving anything from a daily driver to a high-performance street-driven cars.

Participants also get to enjoy all the perks of being an NHRA member, which include:

    • An Official NHRA Competition License Card.
    • Exclusive 9-second and 5-second decals for NHRA Level & Street Legal Racers recognizing your performance.
    • Exclusive discounts with NHRA partners like Summit Racing Equipment and others.
    • A 25% off NHRA.tv, which streams live championship drag racing action at NHRA national events and divisional events across the country.
    • Excess medical insurance coverage of $575,000 at your NHRA Member Track.
    • NHRA National Dragster Magazine online.

“For me, going out to the local track is the ultimate,” Top Fuel star Clay Millican said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re in a minivan or tricked out hotrod, it’s a chance to stomp on the loud pedal and not get in trouble. That’s the beauty of going to the track and getting this license is so inexpensive. It’s so easy to do it and if you really want to go racing, you can do it in a minivan or whatever you want.

“I love the racetrack, so when I’m home I find my way to the track. I’ve got a hot rod and I don’t want to get after it on the street, so I go to the track. It becomes a lifestyle. It may not become your profession, but it becomes your passion and something you can enjoy with your friends and family. You can go the track, bring your buddies along and make all the laps you want. The whole process is very easy and inexpensive, and then you end up with an NHRA license and that’s pretty cool.”

Entering into the Street Legal program to “Become a Racer” is also a way for a spectator or fan to jump into the sport and then eventually become a competitor in one of the many classes or series run by the NHRA. The Street Legal program has proven to be an ideal proving grounds for future racers, with several top performers in the NHRA coming from the sport’s introductory level, including Millican, Top Fuel’s Antron Brown and many, many more. Even the likes of legendary icon Don “The Snake” Prudhomme is among those in the process of receiving their NHRA Street Legal license.

In the “Become a Racer” program, NHRA will also recognize racers at an NHRA Member Track for their on-track performance with unique Street Legal decals. Street Legal decals will be available for racers at a quarter-mile facility who break the 13, 12, 11, and 10-second benchmarks and at an eighth-mile facility who break the 9, 8, 7, and 6-second benchmarks.

Racers who break into the 9’s in a quarter-mile or 5’s in an eighth-mile at an NHRA Member Track and submit to NHRA a license application will receive an exclusive decal, only available with the Street Legal NHRA competition license, to recognize their achievement.

Vehicles participating in the Street Legal events must be able to pass all state highway safety requirements for the state in which the vehicle is registered and retains all OEM safety features. Only legitimate street-legal machines are permitted to participate at designated Street Legal events. Although the competition structure can vary from track to track, a strong emphasis is placed on fun and providing a welcoming environment for first-time new racers. Many Street Legal events feature open time trials and grudge racing only, which typically allows each participant an opportunity to make as many passes down the dragstrip as possible.

The grudge racing element allows participants to choose their competition instead of participating in an organized eliminator. Win or lose, a grudge racing participant may return to the staging lanes for more time trials or more grudge runs. Street Legal events provide a legal and controlled environment where racers of all skill levels enjoy the sport of NHRA Drag Racing.

“The ‘Become a Racer’ program really encapsulates the ‘Speed for All’ motto when it comes to NHRA drag racing,” said Evan Jonat, NHRA Vice President of Live Events. “We’re proud to offer the opportunity for potential drivers of any skill level and at a small cost to race and compete in safe matter and have fun at our venues. Our NHRA Member Tracks are so welcoming and open to bringing in anyone interested in competing or just making laps down the track in the Street Legal category. From going 330 mph at the highest level of the sport to taking your daily driver down the track in our Street Legal category, there’s tremendous opportunities to get involved at the dragstrip, and it’s truly special to see the amount of involvement at all the different levels.”

  • EIGHT-CAR FIELD SET FOR THRILLING GETTRX NHRA PRO STOCK ALL-STAR CALLOUT IN CHICAGO

EIGHT-CAR FIELD SET FOR THRILLING GETTRX NHRA PRO STOCK ALL-STAR CALLOUT IN CHICAGO

CHICAGO (May 1, 2024) – The field of eight standouts is set for the GETTRX NHRA Pro Stock All-Star Callout, as the star-studded field will compete in the marquee specialty event on Saturday, May 18 as part of the 24th annual Gerber Collision & Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK Performance at Route 66 Raceway.

The unique specialty race debuted in the Pro Stock category last year in the NHRA’s return to Chicago and pits eight top drivers against each other with big money and bragging rights on the line. Drivers competed for a spot in the field based on qualifying points since last year’s event in Chicago, with a stellar list set to compete this season.

Reigning world champ Erica Enders rolled to the No. 1 spot, with the rest of the car field including, in order, Greg Anderson, Dallas Glenn, Troy Coughlin Jr., Aaron Stanfield, Matt Hartford, Cristian Cuadra and Deric Kramer.

Enders will get the first selection to call out her opening round opponent and if she doesn’t call out Anderson, he gets the next selection, going down the line until the first-round matchups are set. After a can’t-miss opening round, the driver who makes the quickest winning run will select their semifinal opponent, locking in the other matchup.

The first-round callout selections takes place at 12:30 p.m. CT on Friday, May 17 at the Nitro Alley Stage. The first round of the GETTRX NHRA Pro Stock All-Star Callout begins at 11:30 a.m. CT on Saturday, May 18 with the semifinals to follow at 1:45 p.m. and the finals at 2:55 p.m. A special Callout broadcast is slated for 7 p.m. ET on FS1.

With plenty of natural rivalries in the class, along win the callout dynamic, there is plenty of excitement brewing around the specialty event in Chicago. A year ago, Camrie Caruso won the first-ever Pro Stock Callout and another first-time winner will be crowned in the GETTRX Pro Stock All-Star Callout in 2024. It’s a loaded field, led by Enders, motorsports’ winningest female and a six-time world champion, as well as current points leader and five-time world champ Greg Anderson, who has two wins in 2024 and 105 in his career. Glenn, Stanfield, Coughlin and Cuadra are among the sport’s top young talents, while Hartford is the defending U.S. Nationals winner and Kramer is a five-time winner in the category.

After the successful return to Route 66 Raceway last season, the NHRA is thrilled to head back to Chicago on a weekend filled with four rounds of qualifying, a host of special events on Saturday and Sunday eliminations. Clay Millican (Top Fuel), Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car), Glenn (Pro Stock), and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) took home race wins last year, while Justin Ashley, Ron Capps and Herrera secured Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge titles. The Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge returns in Chicago as well in 2024 in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Also slated for the Chicago race will be the special Drag and Drive exhibition event. With star drivers like Alex Taylor and Tom Bailey on hand, this exhibition offers something unique. The standout street cars set to be featured run in the 6-second range and at more than 200 mph, offering a thrilling spectacle for all race fans. The Chicago race will also feature competition in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series as well as the specialty Congruity NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by LearnEV+, the Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown division, the new Holley EFI Factory X category, as well as the return of the Top Fuel Motorcycle class.

NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series qualifying features two rounds at 2:30 and 5 p.m. CT on Friday, May 17, and the final two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, May 18 at 11:40 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. CT. Eliminations begin at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, May 19.

    Quotes:

BRITTANY FORCE, DRIVER OF THE HENDRICKCARS.COM CHEVROLET TOP FUEL DRAGSTER:

ON FALLING SHORT WITH SEMIFINAL LOSS: “I’m staying very positive. We had a good race day. We struggled during qualifying and we turned things around today.

“I’ve made a little bit of progress in reaction time. You could see it in qualifying and you saw it on race day. That last run (Round 2), it was a long tree and you’re waiting for three other people and it’s a long time to be sitting there staring at that Christmas tree and I double-stepped.

“I’m not holding my head about it. I know what I did wrong and I’m focusingon the improvement and not the negative, and I’m moving forward to Chicago with that.”

SHE THOUGHT SHE WAS GOING TO WIN TODAY: “I honestly thought it was going to happen today. I feel like we’re definitely making a lot of big moves and moving in the right direction. I could taste the win today. I felt like we were going to get there, but unfortunately it was an early day for us.”

ON SPONSORSHIP WITH HENDRICKCARS.COM: “I’m excited to move forward with them,” Brittany Force said of the relationship with HendrickCars.com. “They seem very happy and excited on their end and we want to make them proud. We want to go rounds and we want to land them in the winner’s circle.

“We’re proud to be teamed up with them. Hendrick is such a huge name and a legend in motorsports and we’re glad to have them in the Top Fuel category.”

AUSTIN PROCK, DRIVER OF THE CORNWELL TOOLS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS FUNNY CAR:

“This car really hasn’t struggled much at all this year. We struggled on Friday and got it turned around on Saturday and made some really nice runs. Like my dad told me as a kid, you’re going to lose a lot more than you’re going to win.

“We haven’t lost much this year but it definitely sting, but we have 15 more shots at this year. We’re looking forward to Chicago. I think we’ll pick up right where we we’ve been and we’ll be just fine.

“Still a good outing for John Force Racing. We’ve got three really good JFR race cars right now and we’re going to be tough all year. We’ve been in the final round as a team every race this year so far, so it’s something to be proud about and we’ll chalk this one up and go to the next one.”

    ON MAINTAINING POINTS LEAD:

“I don’t think I’ve ever held the points lead this long, so that’s something to be proud about. This team is just doing a great job. When we falter, we just come back and attack and everything seems to work out.

“You’re only as good as your last run and we go back and prove that. It’s been a great year. You can’t hang your head too hard going out first round. That’s drag racing, you never know what’s going to happen. Today wasn’t our day but maybe next race will.”

JOHN FORCE, DRIVER OF THE PEAK CHEVROLET CAMARO SS FUNNY CAR:

“It was a good week, it was good to take the track record,” Force said. “We were able to go rounds, but I couldn’t close it at the end.

“I had the car to win with, in my opinion, and I just didn’t get the job done.”

Hagan Earns 50th Career Funny Car Win; Ashley Gets First NHRA 4-Wide Nationals Wally

    • Greg Anderson goes back-to-back and Gaige Herrera continues undefeated streak at the Bellagio of drag strips with wins on Sunday
    • The NHRA’s best return with championship battles in full swing at the NHRA Carolina Nationals, Sept. 20-22; tickets are available at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com

CONCORD, NC (April 28, 2024) – As the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals roared to a thundering conclusion at the Bellagio of drag strips Sunday afternoon, four drivers – Justin Ashley (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) reigned triumphant and lifted the coveted Wally trophy, capping a dramatic weekend of white-knuckled racing.

Hagan Earns 50th Carrer Win at Home Track

Four-time Funny Car World Champion Matt Hagan ended a 10-year zMAX Dragway drought with his first win of the 2024 season and 50th of his career. His blistering 332.34 mph in 3.926 run topped first-time 4-Wide finalist Daniel Wilkerson and propelled him to victory.

Some of Hagan’s biggest milestones have come in Charlotte, including the first-ever sub-four second Funny Car run in 2011.

“zMAX has always been special to me,” said Hagan of reaching the 50-win milestone at his home track. “It’s pretty cool when you’re here and you see so many Matt Hagan t-shirts. Great people make the difference between winning and losing, and just being out here winning championships – we might not be the fastest out there, but we just gotta keep doing what we’re doing.”

    Ashley Captures First Four-Wide Win

Top Fuel points leader and Mission #2Fast2Tasty winner Justin Ashley blitzed the pavement with a 3.710-second, 328.06 mph run — enough to edge runner-up Clay Millican by 0.012 seconds and claim his first four-wide win. Despite struggles with the unique format in the past, Ashley and his team are confident in their ability to keep their momentum going.

“We’ve had a lot of success, but we struggle a bit when we go four-wide racing,” Ashley said. “When you come out here and you race four-wide, the quads are so good. It really doesn’t matter who you’re racing, especially with the depth of the Top Fuel field this year. Our team is working so hard – we’ve seen the results really start to come together over the last few races.”

    Anderson Goes Back to Back

Following his 2023 win at zMAX Dragway’s Carolina Nationals, five-time NHRA World Champion Greg Anderson and his KB Titan Racing team picked up where they left off last year with a scorching 6.502 at 210.77 mph run to take back-to-back wins in Charlotte.

Anderson spoke highly of his competitors after a victory in his own backyard.

“To win one of these races anymore is so tough – it’s so hard. There’s so much talent in this class right now,” said Anderson. “Anybody can win on any given Sunday. We went out and took it, went out and won it, and it feels good tonight to be out here at zMAX, at my home track.”

    Herrera Keeps Undefeated Streak Alive

The chapter changed but the story remained the same as reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle Champion Gaige Herrera held off John Hall with a 6.684 at 202.73 mph run to hoist the Wally trophy and secure his 13th national event win, remaining undefeated in Charlotte.

The win marked Herrera’s third straight victory at zMAX Dragway, and seventh consecutive in the category. He’s now one win away from tying six-time World Champion Dave Schultz’s all-time record.

“My dad grew up watching Dave Schultz and John Myers, all those guys,” Herrera said of what breaking the record would mean to him. “For me to even have my name in the same zip code – it’s an amazing feeling to even get close to him.”

Highlights from the three-day nitro-fueled weekend include:

    • The Funny Car final saw three drivers with 21 combined world championships (John Force with 16, Matt Hagan with four and JR Todd with one) race against Daniel Wilkerson, who is in his first full season in the category. Despite running the lowest ET of the round, Wilkerson came up on the losing end of a Hagan holeshot.
    • The house that speed built saw a trio of track records fall over the course of the three-day weekend. Sixteen-time Funny Car champion John Force started things off Friday with a record ET run of 3.820 seconds, while Bob Tasca III made the fastest Funny Car pass ever at zMAX Dragway at 338.34 mph on Saturday. Gaige Herrera reset his own ET record, posting a 6.671-second run on Saturday.
    • For the first time in zMAX Dragway history, all four lanes were occupied by one family as David, Cristian, Fernando Cuadra Jr., and Fernando Cuadra Sr. took to the starting line in the second round of qualifying on Friday.

ASHLEY CAPTURES SECOND VICTORY OF 2024 AT CHARLOTTE FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS
Toyota extends Top Fuel winning streak to six

CONCORD, N.C. (April 28, 2024) – In a fierce final round Sunday afternoon at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte, Justin Ashley was victorious in the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals for his 13th career win and second of the season. This was also Ashley’s first win at zMAX Dragway and his first in a Four-Wide Nationals. The New York native started the day No. 3 overall, winning each of his quads on the way to the Wally Trophy. His Toyota Top Fuel teammates, Doug Kalitta and Antron Brown, also reached the final round on Sunday.

Ashley’s win marks six consecutive wins for Toyota in Top Fuel, including all five of the races so far in 2024 – with Ashley’s two victories (Pomona and Charlotte), Shawn Langdon’s two wins (Gainesville and Phoenix), along with Doug Kalitta’s at Las Vegas.

In Funny Car, J.R. Todd came home third in a stacked final round. Todd won his first quad on Sunday and advanced through round two but fell short of another Wally Trophy to couple his Gainesville triumph. Other GR Supra Funny Car drivers Alexis DeJoria and Ron Capps were defeated earlier in Sunday’s eliminations, with DeJoria reaching the second round and Capps bowing out in round one.

With the final round appearances in both Top Fuel and Funny Car, Toyota has now reached the finals in 28 consecutive NHRA events.

JUSTIN ASHLEY, SCAG Power Equipment Toyota Top Fuel Dragster, SCAG Racing

    TF Final Result: Winner

Another win for you. What would it take to derail the momentum you have right now?

“Well, I think the only thing that could derail us is ourselves. If we get out of focus. It’s not about focusing on the competition, even though you want to know where you are and relevant to everyone else, but our focus is on being the best version of ourselves that we can be. As long as we keep that internal focus, I think we’ll have a lot of success. Mike Green (crew chief), Tommy DeLago (co-crew chief), Dustin Davis (team owner), the whole SCAG Power Equipment Toyota Philips Connect team work so hard day in and day out. They’re the ones who deserve to hold this Wally Trophy. It says zMAX on it, but it should say SCAG Power Equipment and the names of everybody on our team on it. So proud to represent SCAG Power Equipment and all of SCAG nation, all the wonderful dealers, users, owners out there. Man, these things are tough to win, so I get a little bit emotional sometimes. Couldn’t be prouder nor more grateful for this opportunity.”

J.R. TODD, DHL Toyota GR Supra Funny Car, Kalitta Motorsports

    FC Final Result: Finalist

    Can you describe your day?

“We made a good rebound from qualifying. It’s always good to get to the later rounds, the final round in a Four-Wide Nationals. We dropped the cylinder really early in the run, which stinks. I think we had a good shot at winning that thing if it ran on all eight. That shows that we’re making good strides with this DHL GR Supra – just need to keep picking at it. We didn’t have lane choice all day, and I don’t think it’s a big factor in regards to Four-Wides. I don’t think qualifying is a big factor when it comes to Four-Wides, either. That’s not the reason we put a hole out. We’ve been battling, dropping cylinders all weekend. Now, we have a couple weeks off so we’ll go back home and give the guys some rest, regroup and get ready for Chicago.”

  • HAGAN GETS 50TH, ASHLEY, ANDERSON AND HERRERA ALSO ROLL TO WINS AT NHRA 4-WIDE NATIONALS IN CHARLOTTE

HAGAN GETS 50TH, ASHLEY, ANDERSON AND HERRERA ALSO ROLL TO WINS AT NHRA 4-WIDE NATIONALS IN CHARLOTTE

CHARLOTTE (April 28, 2024) – Reigning Funny Car world champion Matt Hagan picked up his 50th career victory on Sunday, driving past John Force, J.R. Todd and Daniel Wilkerson at zMAX Dragway to get the win at the 14th annual NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte.

Justin Ashley (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won the fifth of 20 races during the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

Hagan went 3.946-seconds at 332.34 mph in his 11,000-horsepower Tony Stewart Racing Direct Connection Dodge//SRT Hellcat in the final quad to power to his first win this season, defeating Wilkerson on a holeshot to pick up his milestone victory. Hagan was .029 on the starting line, holding off Wilkerson’s 3.923 at 327.50 at the finish line for the win.

Hagan won his opening-round quad with a 3.918 at 331.61 and then made the second-quickest run of eliminations with a 3.879 at 334.24 to advance to the final round. That led to his fourth victory at zMAX Dragway, which is less than two hours from home for Hagan.

“This is obviously a massive achievement to win 50 races and to have Dodge sponsoring us for so many years,” Hagan said. “To see so many people come and go out here, you just don’t realize that it’s you, you know, you’re like ‘Wow, I’ve been out here little bit over 15 years now and it’s just a huge accomplishment in my book to be able to be around a group of guys that have been nothing but the best out here, and I think that’s why we won four championships.

“To put us in a elite group of drivers with John Force and [Don] Prudhomme and Kenny Bernstein is pretty crazy. I’m very blessed to still be out here, surrounded by a great group of guys. They gave me a great race car and now we’re going to celebrate.”

It was the first career runner-up for Wilkerson, while Todd took third, going 3.978 at 320.36. Austin Prock retained the points lead in the category.

Top Fuel points leader Justin Ashley capped off his stellar weekend with his first career four-wide win, holding off Clay Millican, Doug Kalitta and Antron Brown with a run of 3.710 at 328.06 in his 11,000-horsepower Scag Power Equipment/Toyota dragster. It’s the second victory this season for Ashley, who swept the weekend by also winning the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge on Saturday. He’s been dynamic with double-up wins – Sunday marked his third in the last two seasons – and Ashley did it again on Sunday, winning the first two quads to get to the final round, going 3.711 at 333.58 in the second round.

In the finals, Ashley left first with another great .046 reaction time, holding off the hard-charging Millican, who went 3.722 at a strong 337.92, to claim his 15th career victory. Charlotte is where Ashley debuted, so racing at zMAX Dragway will always be special to him and he was thrilled to claim his first four-wide win on Sunday.

“For whatever reason, we’ve struggled a little bit before in four-wide races. We’d go to the traditional format and have a lot of success, but we struggled when we go four-ride racing,” Ashley said. “When you come out here and you race four-wide, the quads are so good. It really doesn’t matter who you’re racing, especially with depth of the Top Fuel field now. The quads are going to be stellar each and every time, and you saw it even in that final round. There was a lot of really good reaction times a lot of really good E.T.s and it made for some close racing.”

Kalitta, the No. 1 qualifier, finished third in the final quad with a 3.725 at 326.00.

In Pro Stock, No. 1 qualifier Greg Anderson added another impressive Charlotte victory to his resumé, driving past a loaded final-round quad with a standout pass of 6.502 at 210.77 in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro. Anderson ousted KB Titan Racing teammate Dallas Glenn, Aaron Stanfield and Cristian Cuadra to pick up his second victory of the season and the 105th in his career, extending his all-time lead in the category.

It’s been a banner season thus far for Anderson, who won both quads leading into the final round and making the quickest pass each round. He was also .011 on the starting line to advance to the finals and then chased down runner-up Stanfield and Glenn, who were both .011 in the final round, to pick up another meaningful victory. It’s the fifth Charlotte win for Anderson, who won the fall race last year but had not won the four-wide race at zMAX Dragway since 2012 – until Sunday. Anderson also took over the points lead in the class.

“This feels fantastic,” Anderson said. “There is so much talent out here and I’m so proud to be a part of it. We’re in a spot where anyone can win so you’ve got to dig deep to find it and I had it today. We didn’t back into it and it feels good to win a race at zMAX Dragway. It’s my home track and I love it here.

“You have to find a way to get your heart beating and get those butterflies in your stomach and get your nerves going. You can’t artificially create that. I can’t properly explain what it means to win a race for (Rick Hendrick). I met Mr. H 20 years ago and we’ve stayed in touch and he obviously know a thing or two about winning and he knows how to motivate people. It’s just an honor to have those colors on my race car.”

Stanfield finished second, going 6.551 at 209.75 and Glenn was third after his 6.551 at 209.75.

A prolonged break did nothing to slow down the dominant defending world champion in Pro Stock Motorcycle, as Gaige Herrera rolled to his second straight win this season on his RevZilla/Mission Foods/Vance & Hines Suzuki with a run of 6.684 at 202.73 in the final round. Dating back to last season, Herrera has now posted seven consecutive victories, putting together another incredible weekend in Charlotte.

Herrera qualified No. 1, setting the track E.T. record, picked up the victory in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday and then made the quickest pass of each session on Sunday, defeating John Hall, LE Tonglet and Richard Gadson in the finals to earn his 13th career victory and extend his points lead in the process. Herrera also defended his four-wide win from a season ago at zMAX Dragway.

“After Q1 and Q2 I was a bit worried. On the first run we had a malfunction in our wiring, and then after the second run, Matt [Smith] held on to the top spot and that’s because of the rule change,” said Herrera, referring to a recent NHRA rules revision that mandated the same fuel type for both V-twin and inline four-cylinder bikes. “It has created parity and made for better racing. We still had three Vance & Hines bikes in the final (quad).

“In the end, me and [crew chief] Andrew Hines and the bike bond so well. We’re a hard combo to beat. This is just the beginning. It’s all the haters that make us push that much harder and we’re out there to prove them all wrong. I hear people say it’s the bike and that I can’t cut a light, and today my worst light was a .021, so I was here to prove a point. We had three fast bikes and almost everyone is running the same.”

Hall’s 6.758 at 202.12 gave him the runner-up finish, while Gadson was third with a 6.767 at 198.41.

Tasca, Ashley, Enders and Herrera Earn #2Fast2Tasty Wins At Saturday’s NHRA 4-Wide Nationals Qualifying

    • Powered by strong Friday night runs, Doug Kalitta, John Force and Greg Anderson join Gaige Herrera to earn No. 1 qualifier spots ahead of elimination Sunday at zMAX Dragway
    • Tickets for Sunday’s 44,000-horsepower showcase of speed are still available online at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com

CONCORD, NC (April 27, 2024) – With more than just No. 1 qualifying spots on the line during Saturday’s action at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals, drivers put on yet another record-breaking showcase of speed. New this season, the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge brought a race within a race to zMAX Dragway, as the top eight drivers from the 4-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas were pitted against each other with money, playoff points and bragging rights on the line.

When the final win lights were lit, Justin Ashley (Top Fuel), Bob Tasca (Funny Car), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) earned top honors in the #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. Using runs from Friday’s qualifying sessions, Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), John Force (Funny Car) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) join Herrera as No. 1 qualifiers looking ahead to elimination Sunday.

‘Pissed Off’ Tasca Lays Down Record Lap

After learning that his second-round qualifying pass had been disqualified by the NHRA for running an adjusted manifold, Tasca felt vindication when his Funny Car – complete with a manifold borrowed from fellow racer Steve Torrence – ran a track-record 338.34 mph at 3.834 seconds in Saturday’s final qualifying session, earning the veteran racer the #2Fast2Tasty title.

“I was as pissed off as I’ve ever been in a race car today, and I just used that as energy,” Tasca said. “Mentally, that was my mindset. Truthfully, I wasn’t racing any of those racers up there. I was racing NHRA. I was racing for the reputation of my crew chiefs.”

The 18-time winner will look to carry Saturday’s momentum into race day on Sunday when he faces a stacked field of drivers hungry to turn on a win light of their own.

“This level of competition, it takes a perfect call from the crew chief,” Tasca said. “The crew has to do everything right; the driver has to be perfect to beat three other competitors at the highest level. It’s insane, honestly, to win one of these four-wides. It’s probably an easier race to get to the finals, but it is, without question, the most difficult race to win.”

Tasca, whose run propelled him from No. 16 to the No. 2 qualifier, will face Jim Campbell, Paul Lee and Daniel Wilkerson in the opening round of eliminations.

    Ashley Outstanding in #2Fast2Tasty Final

Ashley’s 3.701-second pass at 334.32 mph was enough to hold off a #2Fast2Tasty field that included Antron Brown, Steve Torrence and Josh Hart.

“Yesterday, we fell behind a little bit,” Ashley said of Friday’s qualifying effort. “We wanted to run a little bit better, a little bit quicker. We wanted to come out here today and set a new tone for ourselves. Running that 70 was really important. It doesn’t matter whether it’s qualifying, whether it’s the Mission Foods Challenge, whether it’s race day, we want to win each and every lap down the track.”

Kalitta’s Friday night pass of 3.691 seconds held up on Saturday, relegating Ashley to the No. 3 qualifier position. He will face Tony Stewart, Dan Mercier and Doug Foley in the first round on Sunday.

Second Chance Lifts Enders to #2Fast2Tasty Win

Despite her elimination in the Pro Stock #2Fast2Tasty semi-finals, six-time World Champion Erica Enders was given a chance at redemption when she replaced Greg Anderson following his Q3 disqualification for a technical violation for bypassing a safety device.

“Never give us a second chance,” said Enders, whose 6.516-second 210-mph run secured her second #2Fast2Tasty Challenge win and subsequent bonus points of the season.

While the run earned her the #2Fast2Tasty title, Enders finished in the ninth qualifying spot overall and will face Anderson, Sienna Wildgust and Brandon Foster in the first round.

Fernando Cuadra Sr. failed to qualify for Sunday’s eliminations after announcing his retirement this week, missing the top 16 by just two-thousandths of a second.

Herrera Heats Up In Mission Foods Final

In the Pro-Stock Motorcycle category, reigning World Champion Gaige Herrera dethroned provisional No. 1 qualifier Matt Smith during the category’s final qualifying round, posting a 6.671-second run at 202 mph, simultaneously earning the zMAX Dragway elapsed-time track record and the top seed heading into Sunday.

“Yesterday, we had a malfunction on the first run that set us back, and then we ran 6.68 on the second and that was a good run,” Herrera said. “Today, I ran a 6.70 and then that 6.67 and that’s just our team learning how to fine-tune the new fuel. There was not much left on my bike. It went straight and required very little correction. Tomorrow will be a lot of fun.”

The NHRA 4-Wide Nationals builds to a thundering 44,000-horsepower crescendo on Sunday, with high-octane eliminations beginning at 12 p.m. ET.

KALITTA CLAIMS NO. 1 QUALIFIER IN CHARLOTTE; SECOND STRAIGHT OF THE SEASON
Justin Ashley Claims #2Fast2Tasty Win in Top Fuel

CONCORD, N.C. (April 27, 2024) – Doug Kalitta’s hot streak continues, as he claimed the Top Fuel No. 1 qualifying position for the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte. Kalitta’s 3.691 elapsed time during the Friday night session was fast enough to earn him his 55th career No. 1 qualifier. Toyota teammate, Antron Brown, got the second overall spot with a 3.698 elapsed time as he goes for his third win in the Charlotte spring event.

Justin Ashley made it a Toyota 1-2-3, claiming the No. 3 spot in Top Fuel through a 3.701 time in the final qualifying session on Saturday. This run also gave Ashley the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge victory as he defeated Brown, Steve Torrence and Josh Hart. This is the first Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge win for Ashley this season and Toyota’s second consecutive after Brown was victorious in the challenge at Las Vegas two weeks ago.

In Funny Car, Alexis DeJoria earned the fourth overall position going into tomorrow’s eliminations after strong runs on Friday and Saturday. She aims to avenge her runner-up finish in the Charlotte Four-Wide Nationals a season ago. Ron Capps followed DeJoria in fifth and J.R Todd is the No. 12 spot going into tomorrow.

    TF Qualifying Result: 1st

Talk about how important it is to have consistency throughout the two days of qualifying.

“Yeah, it’s definitely important. We kind of struggled a little bit today. We put in this new blower, and it had just a little too much power in that first run, so we smoked them. In that last run, we got right to the finish line and kind of took care of that blower unfortunately. Will have to start from scratch tomorrow. We’ve got our setup we’ve been running, and we’ve just tried to get some spare blowers there. Hopefully we’ll be in good shape tomorrow. I got a lot of confidence in my guys. You know, they make things look easy. I think we’ll look good tomorrow.”

Talk us through your day and what it means to win the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge.

“Yeah, I thought it was a great day today. Yesterday, we fell behind a little bit. We wanted to run a little bit better, a little bit quicker. It was important for us to come out here today and set a new tone for ourselves. Had a nice 3.739 time earlier in the day and running that 3.701 at the end was really important for our team. It gives us a lot of confidence going into tomorrow. Doesn’t matter if it’s qualifying or if it’s the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, we want to win each and every lap that we make down the race track. This is a testament to the team we have. They do a great job working hard, really since the offseason, putting us in a position to win. If it’s a race, event or challenge, it’s equally tough to win because the Top Fuel field is just that good. Just really proud of the guys and happy to be a part of it.”

    FC Qualifying Result: 4th

Take us through your day and what you’re looking forward to tomorrow.

“So, we’re back here at zMAX Dragway! Last year, we were the runner up in the Four-Wide Nationals. My gosh, this is an elusive win. I’ve been wanting a Four-Wide win for so long. We qualified well, running a 3.859 last night. We’re in the No. 4 position going into tomorrow. I feel really confident as we’ve made some really good runs. This last one, we had a solid run inside the 3.900 range. Yeah, we’re ready for tomorrow and let’s see what happens!”

  • KALITTA, J. FORCE, ANDERSON AND HERRERA PICK UP NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT NHRA 4-WIDE NATIONALS IN CHARLOTTE

KALITTA, J. FORCE, ANDERSON AND HERRERA PICK UP NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT NHRA 4-WIDE NATIONALS IN CHARLOTTE

CONCORD, N.C. (April 27, 2024) – Defending Top Fuel world champion Doug Kalitta enjoyed his second straight No. 1 qualifier, cementing the top spot on Saturday at zMAX Dragway at the 14th annual NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte.

John Force (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also qualified No. 1 at the fifth of 20 races during the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

Kalitta’s run of 3.691-seconds at 337.92 mph from Friday in his 11,000-horsepower Mac Tools dragster held up through two rounds of qualifying on Saturday, handing the reigning world champion his second straight No. 1 spot and the 55th in his career. The result of taking the top position worked well in Las Vegas for Kalitta, as he claimed his first career four-wide win and he’ll look to replicate that on Sunday in Charlotte, also finishing qualifying with a strong 3.710 at 332.18.

“We kind of struggled a little bit today. We put this other blower on and just had a little bit too much power in that first run and smoked the tires, and then that last run, we got right to the finish line and kind of took care of that blower, unfortunately,” Kalitta said. “So we’re going to have to start from scratch again. But now that we’ve got our setup that we’ve been running, we’re going to be in good shape for tomorrow.”

Antron Brown clinched the second spot thanks to his 3.698 at 332.18, while points leader Justin Ashley’s 3.701 at 334.32, which happened during his winning run in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, sent him to the third spot.

In Funny Car, John Force stayed in the top spot thanks to Friday’s track E.T. record of 3.820 at 330.96 in his 11,000-horsepower PEAK Performance Chevrolet Camaro SS. It gives the legendary 16-time world champion his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and the 167th in his iconic career, putting him in a strong position for eliminations on Sunday. Force is aiming for his second win this season, closing out qualifying with a solid pass as well.

“I’ve got a real good Camaro and I’m learning how to drive it,” Force said. “It was a good day for my good chiefs. We tried to run it hard earlier [in the third qualifying session] and had a problem then came back and got cloud cover and ran [3.]85. Now we’ve got to race tomorrow, and that’s a whole new baby. So we’ll see what happens but I’m having fun with my teams and my sponsors.”

Bob Tasca, who won the 4-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas two weeks ago, took second with a 3.834 at 338.34, setting the track speed record and also claiming the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge win. Points leader Austin Prock is third with a 3.852 at 333.58.

Pro Stock’s Greg Anderson finished as the No. 1 qualifier on the strength of Friday’s run of 6.500 at 210.90 in his HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro, but Saturday certainly featured plenty of other headlines. His qualifying run in the third session – as part of the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge – was disqualified due to a technical violation after bypassing a safety device. It eliminated that pass and took Anderson out of the specialty event, as his replacement, Erica Enders, went on to win the Challenge.

But Anderson still has momentum as the No. 1 qualifier at the home track for KB Titan Racing. He’s after his second victory this season after picking up his first top spot of 2024 and the remarkable 125th in his standout career.

“I’m not sure where to start but yesterday in Q2 we had an issue with our ECU [Electronic Control Unit] where the engine wasn’t getting a spark,” Anderson said. “We had a mad thrash in the pits and in the process, one of my guys disconnected a wire that goes to the system that deploys the parachutes in the event of low air pressure. In the process, he forgot to plug that wire back in so our win in the (Mission) #2Fast2Tasty Challenge was disallowed.

“I beat Jeg and Erica and David Cuadra, and then the bottom fell out. It was a simple mistake, but we lost the run and lost the win. Otherwise, the car ran great. It was just a crazy day but it’s over now and I’m ready for race day. Tomorrow, we’re going to make damn sure all the wires are where they should be. I’ve got a really good race car and we’re going to give it all we’ve got.”

Cristian Cuadra qualified second with a 6.507 at 210.18 and Aaron Stanfield took third thanks to a 6.508 at 209.92.

Gaige Herrera’s qualifying dominance in Pro Stock Motorcycle continued on Saturday in Charlotte, but it took until the final session when the defending world champ put together a track-record run of 6.671 at 202.70 on his RevZilla/Mission Foods/Vance & Hines Suzuki. It’s the quickest run in zMAX Dragway history and also hands Herrera his 11th straight No. 1 qualifier dating back to last season. It’s already the 16th career top spot for the young phenom, who will look to stay perfect this season on Sunday.

Matt Smith’s 6.685 at 201.61 from Friday qualified him in the second spot, while LE Tonglet is third after his 6.703 at 200.77 from Friday as well.
