NHRA RELEASES DETAILS FOR CONCLUSION OF LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS, MISSION #2FAST2TASTY CHALLENGE IN PHOENIX

PHOENIX (March 25, 2024) – The NHRA announced details for the racing action at the 39th NHRA Arizona Nationals on April 5-7 at Firebird Motorsports Park, including the final rounds of the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals, as well as the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge.

In what promises to be an epic weekend with two race finishes and a specialty event in Phoenix, fans can expect non-stop action during the return to Firebird Motorsports Park. The opening round of the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge will take place during Friday’s qualifying session that begins at 4 p.m. PT. The finals of the bonus event follows during the second round of qualifying at 11:30 a.m. PT on Saturday.

That sets up a marquee finish to the day on Saturday, with the final rounds in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock for the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals taking place as part of final qualifying, which begins at 2 p.m. The final rounds from Pomona, which were postponed on Sunday due to inclement weather, will be the final pair in each category.

It adds up to an incredible, can’t-miss weekend at the “Duel in the Desert” in Phoenix, with final eliminations of the NHRA Arizona Nationals to follow at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday, April 7. Television coverage includes action on FS1 at 9:30 p.m. ET. on Friday and then a special NHRA in 30: Pomona Finals show at 9:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. Sunday coverage includes qualifying at 10:30 a.m. and eliminations at 6:30 p.m. ET.

A handful of drivers will also have the opportunity to win three times in one weekend, including Top Fuel standout Justin Ashley. He accomplished that feat last year in Bristol, winning the delayed NHRA New England Nationals and the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge on Saturday at Bristol Dragway, and taking the victory the next day at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.

To do that in Phoenix, he’ll have to get past the winningest driver in Top Fuel history, Tony Schumacher, who advanced to his first final round of the year in Pomona. That makes for an epic Winternationals final round in Phoenix, with Ashley also looking for his third straight victory at the historic race. The young standout is also the defending event winner of the NHRA Arizona Nationals.

In Funny Car, the final run of the day on Saturday in Phoenix will be a spectacular one, as the legendary John Force will face off with reigning world champion Matt Hagan with a victory at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals on the line. Force, a 16-time world champion and the winningest driver in NHRA history, will aim for his first victory since 2022, while Hagan is after a repeat Winternationals triumph and his 50th career win.

The Pro Stock final round from Pomona includes defending and six-time world champion Erica Enders, who will try for back-to-back wins to open her 2024 Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season. The winningest female in motorsports can also pick up her 50th career national event victory with a win in Phoenix on Saturday. She takes on Dallas Glenn, who qualified No. 1 and is also the defending Winternationals winner.

The Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge features a wealth of intriguing matchups, too, as a full slate of stars look to win the bonus event that provides a bonus purse and bonus championship points, bringing competitive racing to both Friday and Saturday qualifying in Phoenix. In Top Fuel, Ashley will take on two-time world champion Brittany Force, while Schumacher will meet up with Billy Torrence.

In Funny Car, Force and Ron Capps will continue their storied rivalry in the opening round, while Hagan takes on Gainesville winner J.R. Todd. Enders and longtime rival Greg Anderson meet in one of the Pro Stock matchups, while the other pairing in the opening round of the specialty race features Glenn and Mason McGaha.

Ashley (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Camrie Caruso (Pro Stock) all won at Phoenix in 2023. The NHRA Arizona Nationals also includes thrilling competition in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and the Congruity NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by LearnEV+, featuring the top racers in the country. It also marks the debut of the NHRA Pro Mod category in Phoenix. There will also be exciting performances from Team “Muy Caliente” and Curt White “Iceman” Jet Cars.

All weekend long, fans are invited to the Nitro Alley Stage, which will help create a festive atmosphere leading into the nitro pits. The Nitro Alley Stage is the main entertainment hub in the pits, hosting Nitro School, meet and greets, music and much more. Race fans at Firebird Motorsports Park can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that introduce and celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk.

As always, fans also get an exclusive pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet in Phoenix. This opportunity gives fans a unique chance to see teams in action and service their hot rods between rounds, get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers, and more. Fans can also visit NHRA’s popular Nitro Alley and Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and race vendors create an exciting and interactive atmosphere.

JUSTIN ASHLEY REACHES FINALS OF POSTPONED WINTERNATIONALS AT POMONA
Final round to take place at NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix

POMONA, Calif. (March 24, 2024) – Starting the day as the No. 5 seed in the Top Fuel eliminations, Justin Ashley powered his Toyota Top Fuel Dragster to the final round of the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip. Due to inclement weather late Sunday afternoon, however, the final round of the event will take place in two weeks during the NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix where Ashley will take on Tony Schumacher for the Wally Trophy.

The winning runs by Ashley on Sunday, which included defeating No. 1 qualifier Brittany Force in the semifinals, mark the 25th consecutive NHRA event Toyota has made the final round in either Top Fuel or Funny Car. When the final round commences in two weeks, Ashley will go for his third straight victory in the Winternationals.

In Funny Car, J.R. Todd followed up his win at Gainesville with a semi-finals appearance, only to fall to top qualifier, Matt Hagan. His Toyota Funny Car teammate, Ron Capps, was also a round away from the finals and a shot at his fifth Winternationals victory but was defeated by John Force.

    TF Final Result: Finals

What are your thoughts about the day and now having to wait a few weeks for the finals against Tony Schumacher?

“We were looking forward to racing in the final round in front of all the great fans that stuck it out through the rain. I’m disappointed we couldn’t get it done, but grateful that we have an opportunity to finish things up in just a few short weeks.

I have a ton of respect for Tony (Schumacher). He’s a winner and a champion for a lot of different reasons. I have the utmost respect for him and Joe Maynard (Owner, JCM Racing) and that team over there. It will be a battle no matter where we get the race in. We have a huge responsibility to the BlueBird, Versatran, and SCAG dealers that came out and waited out this weather all weekend long. Not to mention, Pomona is a home event for Phillips, and Rob Phillips was here in the house. It won’t be raced in Pomona, but it’s still the finals of the Winternationals, so all chips are on the table. In the meantime, we’ll hop into our Toyota Sequoia and head back to the shop to make the most of our week off.”

J.R. TODD, DHL Toyota GR Supra Funny Car

    FC Final Result: Semi-finals

How would you describe this weekend for you and the team?

“Yeah, I think our lucky streak finally ran out here in the semis. But all in all, I’m really proud of my guys for working hard and never giving up. All in all, can’t really complain about the weekend, we were in the semifinals.”

It must have been a challenging weekend with only two qualifying runs due to weather, right?

“Yeah, with the weather conditions and track conditions, it’s definitely trickyEverybody’s in the same boat and there were some really good runs out there. Yeah, we got work to do and we’ll have our heads down and keep digging.”

RON CAPPS, NAPA Auto Care Toyota GR Supra Funny Car

    FC Final Result: Semi-finals

Take me through your day today at Pomona.

“Yeah I mean, we knew all the manufacturers were in the semifinals. Obviously, you want to do well for Toyota and thought we had the advantage there with our GR Supra body. We found something right before we went up there. You know, I’m always bragging about my team that we have the ‘NAPA Know How’ and they caught something that could’ve been a bigger deal and they caught it right before we went up. So, we were a little rushed, me getting in the car and getting up there. It started sprinkling and we thought they were going to hold off but got up there last minute. I haven’t talked to Guido (Dean Antonelli, crew-chief) yet to see mechanically why it smoked the tires, but just something the car hasn’t done all weekend. We felt pretty comfortable, again like Gainesville, we had a great car. Felt like a car that could win the race. But good thing is, we have a couple weeks off and two more West Coast races, so let’s see if we can go out there and get a trophy.”

  • B. FORCE, HAGAN AND GLENN TAKE TOP SPOTS AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

    B. FORCE, HAGAN AND GLENN TAKE TOP SPOTS AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (March 22, 2024) – Brittany Force powered to the top spot to close out qualifying on Saturday at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, earning her first No. 1 qualifier of the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season at the 64th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals.

Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock) also qualified No. 1 at the second of 20 races during the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series.

After a lengthy rain delay, Force put together a run of 3.711-seconds at 335.73 mph in her 11,000-horsepower Mark Christopher Auto Center Chevrolet/Monster Energy dragster. It was the lone qualifying session due to weather and Force claimed her 47th career No. 1 qualifier with the standout run. She’ll open eliminations looking for her first victory since 2022 when she finished the year as world champion.

“That was a good, consistent run and that’s what we’re focused on,” Force said. “We’re in a good place and it’s pretty awesome to have 47 No. 1 qualifiers. That’s (crew chief) David Grubnic and this entire team. But our focus is on raceday and trying to get a win. We’re ready for tomorrow.”

Eight-time Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher took second with a 3.735 at 331.85, while Billy Torrence took third with a 3.745 at 330.47. Tony Stewart’s run of 3.737 at 328.30 during the second session was ruled invalid due to a timing system malfunction.

Reigning Funny Car world champion Matt Hagan, who won the Winternationals a year ago, made the most of his run on Saturday, going to No. 1 with a run of 3.893 at 330.15 in his 11,000-horsepower Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat for Tony Stewart Racing. It gives the four-time world champion 51 career No. 1 qualifiers and plenty of momentum going into raceday, where Hagan looks to pick up his milestone 50th career victory. He’ll open eliminations against Buddy Hull trying to pick up his first win of the season.

“To do a burnout and still have that many fans in the stands after the weather was pretty cool,” Hagan said. “The track was tricky, so we’ll take that run. All in all, I’m pretty happy with that. We’ve had a lot of success here and to make that run makes me feel confident going into tomorrow. We’ve won a lot of races because Dickie (Venables, crew chief) has been good on Sunday. It would be great to get that 50th (win) in Pomona. It’s such a special place and it’s really magical here. There’s so much history and when you show up here, you get chill bumps. It’s just a cool feeling.”

Ron Capps took the second spot with a 3.893 at 326.71 and Bobby Bode took third after going 3.972 at 292.96.

In Pro Stock, defending event winner Dallas Glenn racked up his fifth career No. 1 qualifier, closing out qualifying with a run of 6.536 at 209.75 in his RAD Torque Systems Chevrolet Camaro. Glenn made a big move to close out the day after the team made wholesale changes leading into the day. They struggled on Friday, but the changes paid off heading into raceday, putting the young standout in a good spot to try and earn his first win of the season. He’ll open eliminations against KB Titan Racing teammate and rookie Sienna Wildgust.

“That was really satisfying,” Glenn said. “We basically rewired my entire car this morning. We changed so much stuff on it. We were not happy with it and it had been doing some crazy stuff. It at least worked for one run and we were pretty happy with it. The run felt amazing and we made a really killer run. Pomona has always been up there as one of my favorite tracks. I’ve always loved coming here and hopefully we have it turned around.”

Defending world champion Erica Enders qualified second with a 6.547 at 210.73 and Camrie Caruso jumped to third thanks with a 6.557 at 208.88.

Only one round of the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge was completed on Saturday due to weather as well. Shawn Langdon and Steve Torrence both won the opening round in Top Fuel, while J.R. Todd and Austin Prock picked up the Funny Car victories. In Pro Stock, Glenn and Enders raced to Challenge wins.

CAPPS AND TORRENCE LEAD TOYOTA AFTER SHORTENED POMONA QUALIFYING
Toyota seeking Top Fuel three-peat on Sunday

POMONA, Calif. (March 23, 2024) – After a rain-shortened qualifying at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip, Ron Capps was the highest-qualifying Toyota driver by claiming the second qualifying spot in Funny Car for the NHRA Winternationals. Capps and Matt Hagan had identical 3.893 elapsed times during Saturday evening’s session, but Hagan’s 330 mph speed resulted in him capturing the top position. With his strong run, Capps is in an ideal position to claim his fifth career Winternationals victory tomorrow, his first at the annual event since 2021.

In Top Fuel, Billy Torrence led the Toyota contingent with the third position heading into Sunday’s elimination rounds. The Texan was atop the Top Fuel leaderboard after the lone Friday session, but his 3.745 elapsed time was eclipsed by Brittany Force thanks to improved track conditions Saturday evening. Torrence’s son, Steve, was the next highest Top Fuel racer with the fourth position.

    FC Qualifying Result: 2nd

Can you take us through qualifying and what you’re looking forward to tomorrow?

“Boy, another crazy, crazy day! I mean anytime we have weather, there’s a lot of standing around, a lot of anticipation. We have the most loyal fans. I’m sure any driver tells you that in any series, but it’s unbelievable how long our fans stayed around to see what we got at Pomona dragstrip – a historic dragstrip, an epic 64th annual race. To get one more shot at qualifying like we did, when the sun was going down, there’s nothing like driving this GR Supra down Pomona dragway on a Saturday night like that and running a 3.893 to the number one spot. We did get bumped on speed, that was probably me shutting the car off a little early down there. But we know we have a great race car and I’m excited about tomorrow. This is obviously a home track for me. A lot of friends and family are here. But we sure want to see if we can double up with my Toyota teammates there in COTA (Circuit of the Americas) and celebrate with Toyota Sunday night.”

BILLY TORRENCE, CAPCO Contractors Toyota Top Fuel Dragster, Torrence Racing

    TF Qualifying Result: 3rd

How would you describe your qualifying effort over the two rounds?

“Yeah, we made a good pass there yesterday, trying a new setup in the car. Then, we tried something else today, and it just didn’t hang on. It was running well, but we just overpowered the track a little bit. I think we’ll have a good race car for tomorrow, though.”

  • WILKERSON, B. TORRENCE AND ENDERS RACE TO PROVISIONAL NO. 1 SPOTS AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

WILKERSON, B. TORRENCE AND ENDERS RACE TO PROVISIONAL NO. 1 SPOTS AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (March 22, 2024) – Funny Car rookie Daniel Wilkerson put himself in position for his first career No. 1 qualifier on Friday, racing to the provisional top spot at the 64th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip.

Billy Torrence (Top Fuel) and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) are also the provisional No. 1 qualifiers at the second of 20 races during the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series.

In a full-time ride for the first time in his career, Daniel Wilkerson made the most of his opportunity on Friday, taking the top spot with a 4.014 at 314.31 in his 11,000-horsepower Scag Power Equipment Ford Mustang. That puts Wilkerson in line for his first career top qualifier, which would be a huge moment in his career. He stepped into the driver role this year, with his father, Funny Car veteran Tim Wilkerson, calling the shots as crew chief. On Friday, it worked out wonderfully for the father-son duo.

“It was a little squirrely but I got it to the end,” said Wilkerson, who will be competing for NHRA Rookie of the Year honors this year. “It got a little loose coming out of the middle of the track and I was almost yelling at myself steering the car. But it worked out and I was happy with it. All of this, it almost hasn’t set in yet, but it’s been a lot of fun so far.”

Jeff Diehl took the second spot on Friday after going 4.050 at 306.81 and Chad Green, who won in Pomona last year to end the season, is third with a 4.110 at 302.96.

In Top Fuel, Billy Torrence powered to the top on Friday, going 3.745 at 330.47 in his 11,000-horsepower Capco Contractors dragster. If that holds, Torrence would earn his sixth career No. 1 qualifier, as both Torrence cars made strong runs during the lone qualifying session of the day. His son, Steve, is currently second after the four-time world champ went 3.750 at 328.30, giving the team plenty of momentum for the weekend. They also meet tomorrow in the opening round of the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge.

“I was very impressed with that run,” Torrence said. “I thought we could make a good run on the track. The guys have worked really hard on that setup and I really thought Steve would sneak around us and pick our pocket, but he just missed us. Performance-wise, I think the cars are really close. I think we’ve got a good set-up for a solid year.”

Former world champ Brittany Force is in the third spot thanks to a run of 3.783 at 330.30 and Gainesville winner Shawn Langdon is right behind with a 3.788 at 318.24.

A strong start continued for reigning Pro Stock world champion Erica Enders on Friday in Pomona, as she went 6.556 at 211.69 in her Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage/Melling Performance/Scag Power Equipment car. If it holds, it would give Enders her second straight No. 1 qualifier to start the season. Enders, who also won in Gainesville, is after her 50th career national event victory this weekend, which would add another incredible milestone in her stellar career. Two years ago, Enders won at the Winternationals in what was the 900th race in Pro Stock history.

“It was a little bit of a hairy ride. It made some big moves, but I’m thankful for all the runs I have in these cars,” Enders said. “We’re big on numbers and going after that 50th win is very important to us. Winning my first Winternationals two years ago for the 900th Pro Stock race was pretty spectacular and we’re glad to be back here. Coming off a win at the Gatornationals, we’re just going to try to carry that momentum, but we definitely have a good racecar right now.”

Matt Hartford is currently second with a 6.568 at 210.31 and Jeg Coughlin Jr. is third with a 6.573 at 211.20.

Qualifying continues at 11:30 a.m. ET on Saturday at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip

  • PRO STOCK STANDOUT DALLAS GLENN AFTER REPEAT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS WIN

PRO STOCK STANDOUT DALLAS GLENN AFTER REPEAT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS WIN

POMONA, Calif. (March 20, 2024) – After a solid showing in 2023, NHRA Pro Stock driver Dallas Glenn returns to In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip in hopes of repeating his Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals win.

The 64th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals kicks off this weekend at the historic In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip in Southern California. Glenn and the other stars of the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series are eager to return to the historic facility and race for a shot at an early-season NHRA Wally trophy.

“Coming off a strong start in Gainesville a few weeks ago and heading into a race where I am the defending event champion is a definite boost to my confidence,” said Glenn, a semifinalist at the season opener in Florida. “We had a really solid regular season in 2023 and I want to take it a step further and win this championship this year. Pomona is the next obstacle to make that happen.”

Last year, Justin Ashley (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Glenn (Pro Stock) took home top honors in their respective categories at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals. This season’s event will be broadcasted on FS1, including eliminations coverage on Sunday, March 24 at 7 p.m. ET.

Glenn gathered four wins last season, beginning in Pomona where he took out Matt Hartford in the final round. This season, he’ll be again up against the best in the category including his KB Titan Racing teammate and winningest Pro Stock driver Greg Anderson as well as the reigning champion Erica Enders, who won the Gatornationals to open the 2024 campaign.

Also in the mix will be Cristian Cuadra, five-time champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. and Aaron Stanfield, who took home the NHRA Finals win to close out the season last year.

“I love racing at tracks that have so much history like Pomona,” said Glenn, the 2021 NHRA Rookie of the Year. “I’ve been competing in Pomona since I was 18 in Stock Eliminator and Pomona was one of the first ‘big time’ tracks I raced at outside of (my home track) Seattle.”

Because of his semifinal finish in Gainesville, Glenn will also be entered into the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge on Saturday in Pomona. The specialty race provides an opportunity for semifinalists to rematch from the previous event, giving bonus purse and bonus championship points to the winner. Glenn will again face off against Cristian Cuadra while Enders will take on Anderson.

Fans can also witness 40-plus nitro cars in action this weekend in Pomona. Along with the 21-car field in Funny Car and a 17-car Top Fuel entry list, the Legends Nitro Funny Cars will be in action this weekend, pushing the number of nitro cars to well more than 40 at the second stop of the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

Top Fuel’s Ashley took home his first win of the season last year in Pomona. He went on to win six races and finished fourth in points. Ashley will be up against reigning champion and Top Fuel veteran Doug Kalitta, four-time champ Steve Torrence, Gainesville winner Shawn Langdon and Brittany Force. Also joining the Top Fuel ranks in 2024 is motorsports legend Tony Stewart.

Hagan’s Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals victory gave him his second of six wins in 2023 and his seventh at the historic track en route to his world title. Hagan will face off against Bob Tasca III, three-time champ Ron Capps, Gatornationals winner J.R. Todd, NHRA legend John Force and Gainesville runner-up Austin Prock.

The Top Fuel matchups in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge include Gainesville winner Langdon taking on Antron Brown, and a father-son matchup of Billy and Steve Torrence. In Funny Car, Todd will meet up with Tasca and Prock will race Chad Green.

Along with racing in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, fans can also see the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Legends Nitro Funny Cars and Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown, while the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department will hold a special racing exhibition. Following nitro qualifying on Friday and Saturday, the “Walking Tall” P.T. Cruiser Wheelstander driven by “NitroMike” Kunz will put on a can’t-miss show.

The Nitro Alley Stage is a huge attraction all weekend and is the main entertainment hub in the pits, hosting Nitro School, Total Seal Tech Talk, the NHRA Insider Live, meet and greets, and much more. As always, fans get a pit pass to the most powerful and sensory-filled motorsports attraction on the planet. Fans can see their favorite teams in action and servicing their hot rods between rounds and get autographs from their favorite NHRA drivers. They can also visit NHRA’s Manufacturers Midway, where sponsors and race vendors create an exciting atmosphere that includes interactive displays, merchandise, food and fun.

Race fans at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip can enjoy the special pre-race ceremonies that celebrate each of the drivers racing for the prestigious Wally on Sunday and includes the fan favorite SealMaster Track Walk. The final can’t-miss experience of any NHRA event is the winner’s circle celebration on Sunday after racing concludes, where fans are invited to congratulate the event winners.

NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series qualifying features one round at 4:30 p.m. PT on Friday, March 22, and the final two rounds on Saturday, March 23 at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The finals of the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge take place at the end of final qualifying in each category. Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. PT on Sunday, March 24. Television coverage includes qualifying action on FS1 at 9:30 p.m. ET on Saturday and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, leading into eliminations at 7 p.m. ET.

You’re surrounded by family and friends and it’s just this support system that pours in, and it makes the weekend very special.”

What’s your mindset heading into a race like Pomona that’s special to you?

“Going into Pomona, we need to see better results on race day, and in order to do that we need to make more consistent runs. We need to qualify top five and go some rounds on race day. We’d like to win this thing. It’s Pomona and I’ve won there in the past. This David Grubnic-led team set the national mph record back in 2022 at 338.94 mph at Pomona, so we have been successful on this track. We just need to kind of regroup and get back on track after a tough season.”

“A win there would be more elevated. It means something more because it’s a home track that I grew up on. It’s right in my neighborhood, and I’m surrounded by friends and family and this extra support. I’ve raced Super Comp there, I’ve raced A Fuel, I’ve raced Top Fuel, and I won a (Top Fuel) championship there. There are so many memories built around there during my career and then before my career as a kid, so it just has this very home comfort feeling that I love about it.”

AUSTIN PROCK, DRIVER OF THE CORNWELL TOOLS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS FUNNY CAR:

“It still feels surreal, being able to drive this Funny Car and race with my family. I’m looking forward to Pomona. I’ve always loved that racetrack. It’s always been my favorite one to hit on the map. The dragster is a lot more elegant, I would call it. (With) the longer wheelbase you’re accelerating quicker, but the car is moving left to right, slower. I would call it the Cadillac of NHRA drag racing. The way it moves around is a lot more slow and lazy. You can be a lot smoother on the wheel, where the Funny Car, when it takes off it, it really wants to hunt, it wants to go in whatever direction it wants to go. It’s going there in a hurry and you better be two steps ahead of it. So yeah, it’s just figuring out. I love driving both of them (Funny Cars and Top Fuelers). It’s just figuring out the tendencies and when to get on the wheel and when not to get on the wheel.”

On winning at Bradenton, going runner-up at Gainesville, and competing with his father and brother by his side…

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet. It’s one of those deals where things are just happening and so much is coming at me at once right now. I feel like I’m just kind of like, holding on to the wheel, but I’m definitely enjoying it. It still feels surreal, being able to drive this Funny Car and race with my family. I’m looking forward to Pomona. I’ve always loved that racetrack. It’s always been my favorite one to hit on the map.”

JOHN FORCE, DRIVER OF THE PEAK ANTIFREEZE & COOLANT CHEVROLET CAMARO SS FUNNY CAR:

“Pomona is personal to me. My love for Pomona goes back to the 60s, when I was driving a truck. I went out and looked through the fence to watch the starting line and watching the people racing. Then, in 1974-75, I started running the local tracks, but Pomona was the big ball field. That was our Dodger Stadium. That’s where we wanted to be. And now here I am. So coming home to it, there’s a lot of memories. I won a lot of races and won championships. I’m looking for another win and I’m going to try to get it done here. Every race counts, but I’m excited to be back home and be racing with family.”

    John Force on 2024…

“We’re in the championship run for the title. And I want number 17 (championship). I may not yell and scream it, and I’ve won so many, but I want to keep winning. I want to I want to win with (crew chief) Daniel Hood and with my team. (Pomona is) just the place to be. We’re coming here now, we’ll kick off the second race of the season and we’ll come back at the end of the year. And hopefully, if not me, one of us will run for the title, Brittany (Force) or (Austin) Prock. That’s what we do.”

  • TOP FUEL’S SHAWN LANDGON LOOKS TO KEEP ROLLING AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS AFTER SNAPPING DRY SPELL

TOP FUEL’S SHAWN LANDGON LOOKS TO KEEP ROLLING AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS AFTER SNAPPING DRY SPELL

POMONA, Calif. (March 19, 2024) – In picking up his first win in nearly four years to open the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season, Shawn Langdon also picked up a handful of significant milestones along the way.

Along with the first Gatornationals win for the former Top Fuel world champ, Langdon also helped Kalitta Motorsports pick up its first-ever double-up in the nitro categories, handing Brian Husen a victory in his first race since being name crew chief before the season. It also gave Langdon his first victory at a season-opening race since 2015, summing up the fact that things couldn’t have gone much better for the veteran.

That 2015 season-opening victory came in Pomona, where Langdon will be this weekend for the 64th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at In-N-Out Pomona Dragstrip. It’s still a very special race for the Mira Loma, Calif. native, especially since he’ll have the chance to continue his strong start at the second race of the 2024 season in his 11,000-horsepower Kalitta Air Careers Toyota dragster.

“A lot of this sport is results-driven, so when you go in a drought, you (see) the things online,” Langdon said. “But you take it with a grain of salt, keep your head down and keep working. But you’re with a great organization and we get the best of everything. Connie (Kalitta, team owner) is a great leader and sets a great example, so we really feel like we race as a family. It’s a great atmosphere over here. We’re going to get everything ready for Pomona and we consider it one of the majors. We’re going to keep working and try to progress as a team.”

Last year, Justin Ashley (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Dallas Glenn (Pro Stock) took home top honors in their respective categories at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals. To repeat their titles, they’ll need to get past some of the biggest names in the sport at a race that will again be broadcasted on FS1, including eliminations coverage on Sunday, March 24 at 7 p.m. ET.

It’s the second of 20 races during the 2024 NHRA season and Langdon couldn’t be happier with the start in Gainesville, which also included his first No. 1 qualifier since 2020. Things won’t get easier in a loaded Top Fuel lineup that includes teammate and defending world champion Doug Kalitta, Brittany Force, Ashley, Tony Schumacher and Top Fuel newcomer and racing legend Tony Stewart.

But with Husen calling the shots, things have clicked early and often for the team. Langdon also has the chance to come up big in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge on Saturday. The specialty race offers a bonus purse and bonus championship points, bringing competitive racing to Saturday qualifying, and Langdon opens the Challenge against Antron Brown. The other pairing includes Steve and Billy Torrence, with the winners meeting up to close out qualifying.

“There’s just people that you click with and dating back to 2012, I always felt Brian and I clicked from day one,” Langdon said. “I say something and he gets it, and he says something and I understand it. We’ve just gotten along really well. I’ve always had great respect for him and I’m going to sing the praises for him. This new car is showing a lot of potential and I’m just so happy for Brian. He puts in so much time and effort behind the scenes, and he deserves every ounce of credit he gets. I’m so thankful to be his driver.”

Fans can also witness 45-plus nitro cars in action this weekend in Pomona. Along with the 21-car field in Funny Car and a 17-car Top Fuel entry list, the Legends Nitro Funny Cars will be in action this weekend, pushing the number of nitro cars to more nearly 50 at the second stop of the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season.

Glenn earned four race wins in 2023, including his win at Pomona. He also collected five runner-up finishes as well as two No. 1 qualifier positions. Glenn will be up against the likes of six-time and reigning Pro Stock champion Erica Enders, as well as Greg Anderson, Matt Hartford, Troy Coughlin Jr. and NHRA Finals winner Aaron Stanfield.

The Funny Car matchups in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge include Todd taking on Tasca, and a Prock-Green rematch. In Pro Stock, it will be Enders facing off with Anderson and Glenn racing against Cristian Cuadra.

ET.

  • HUGE FUNNY CAR FIELD AWAITS POINTS LEADER J.R. TODD AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

HUGE FUNNY CAR FIELD AWAITS POINTS LEADER J.R. TODD AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

The 21-car Funny Car field is largest for the NHRA Winternationals since 2014

POMONA, Calif. (March 18, 2024) – After winning the NHRA Gatornationals to open the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, J.R. Todd heads to this weekend’s 64th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals with plenty of momentum.

But it certainly won’t get any easier for the former Funny Car world champion at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip. Todd is one of 21 Funny Car entries for this weekend’s annual early-season race in Pomona, which makes it the largest Funny Car field for the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals since 2014.

It’s a huge and massively talented Funny Car category, but Todd is feeling the best of everyone heading into Pomona in his 11,000-horsepower DHL Toyota GR Supra. A season-opening win in Gainesville gives the team plenty of confidence and Todd knows his team will be ready for the challenge in Pomona. But Todd also knows there will be talented drivers at every turn this weekend at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip.

“(The win) sets a good tone going into Pomona,” Todd said. “It’s not like these guys (on this team) lack confidence. When we were not running well, they still knew they had an opportunity to run well and win against these guys. I know I have to be on kill every time because when the car is on, I think it’s a tough combination. I try to hold up my end and I know they’re always working to give me a great car. As long as we can keep going to the semifinals, I think we can set up ourselves a run for the championship. But top-to-bottom, it’s tough in Funny Car and you can’t take anybody lightly. It’s a matter of survival on raceday.”

ET.

Todd is also part of the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge on Saturday in Pomona. The specialty race provides a bonus purse and bonus championship points in bringing competitive racing to the Saturday schedule, and Todd will take on Bob Tasca III, with Austin Prock meeting Chad Green. The winners will face off to close out qualifying, setting the stage for a monumental Sunday of eliminations.

Just making the field will be a feat, but Todd feels as though his team is on a good path, even while taking on the likes of defending world champion Hagan, Ron Capps, John Force, Cruz Pedregon and Alexis DeJoria. After struggles in recent seasons, Todd, who won in Sonoma last year, and his team have pushed forward and he’s ready for a big year in 2024 after starting so well at the Gatornationals.

“We show up to win every race,” Todd said. “Leaving Gainesville as the points leader, I don’t know when the last time I was able to say that was, but it’s a long season. You want to stay up there in the top five going into the Countdown to the Championship, which is a long time from now, but hopefully we can get a few more of these along the way and let it eat those last six races of the year.”

Glenn earned four race wins in 2023 including his win at Pomona.

The Top Fuel matchups in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty NHRA Challenge include Langdon taking on Antron Brown, and a father-son matchup of Billy and Steve Torrence. In Pro Stock, it will be Enders against Anderson and Glenn racing against Cristian Cuadra.
