With a huge crowd expected all weekend in Gainesville, fans can also see the debuts and returns of several exciting names in the sport, including legendary racer Tony Stewart, who will make his Top Fuel debut at the Gatornationals.

In 2023, Mike Salinas (Top Fuel), Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Troy Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) and Gaige Herrera (Pro Stock Motorcycle) all picked up victories to open the season. It marked the second straight Gainesville win for Hagan and Tony Stewart Racing, while Salinas, Coughlin and Herrera, all won the historic race for the first time. Both Hagan and Herrera ended the season as world champions, while Josh Hart won the Pep Boys NHRA Top Fuel All-Star Callout at his home track.

  • HOLLEY EFI NAMED TITLE SPONSOR OF NHRA FACTORY X, WHICH IS SLATED FOR EIGHT RACES IN 2024

HOLLEY EFI NAMED TITLE SPONSOR OF NHRA FACTORY X, WHICH IS SLATED FOR EIGHT RACES IN 2024

INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 6, 2023) – NHRA officials announced today that Holley EFI has been named the title sponsor of its exciting Factory X category, which is reserved for 2019 and newer manufactured automobiles, including the Chevrolet COPO Camaro, Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, and Ford Mustang Cobra Jet.

NHRA Holley EFI Factory X made its official debut during the 2023 season and is slated to compete at eight events during the 2024 campaign, starting at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals on April 12-14 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

After appearing four times in 2023, NHRA Holley EFI Factory X, which combines supercharged Hemi, LS, or Coyote engines, with manual transmissions and lightweight, late-model, factory-appearing bodies – each powered by Holley EFI – will have its first full season in 2024 as the class continues to draw impressive interest from both drivers and race fans.

“Holley has been a part of NHRA since its inception and we have enjoyed progressing our business from carbs to modern EFI. It’s a huge thrill to continue to be involved with NHRA Factory X and to see the evolution of this amazing new class,” said Jason Bruce, Holley Performance Products Vice President of Sales. “These cars are just so exciting and provide a great new cool factor for NHRA fans. We’re seeing interest growing and new cars being built, and you can feel the excitement for this class continuing to build at a very fast rate. These Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers truly represent what a modern muscle car is and it’s a class that has really caught on with the fans as well, and that’s great to see.”

Following the season-opener in Las Vegas, NHRA Holley EFI Factory X will appear at the next two NHRA national events in Charlotte and Chicago. That follows with a trip to Norwalk in June and then the prestigious Dodge Power Brokers NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indy, finishing the season with races in St. Louis, Dallas and the finale in Las Vegas.

In a short time, the class already showcased immense potential and tremendous performances in 2023, with Allen Johnson making the first 200-mph run in St. Louis to begin the “Jesel 200 MPH Club.” With low seven-second runs already made this past season, there’s a chance big-performance numbers and standout runs in the six-second range in 2024, which would create even more excitement in the lightweight, modified class.

“NHRA Holley EFI Factory X is such an outstanding class and we’re thrilled to partner with a company like Holley that has recognized the great potential in this category,” said Brad Gerber, NHRA Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “The class enjoyed a very successful debut in 2023 and it’s going to be very exciting to have NHRA Holley EFI Factory X race its first full season in 2024 and compete at eight NHRA national events. When they’re on the track, they put on an incredible show and it’s going to continue to be a huge hit with fans.”

Cars in NHRA Holley EFI Factory X have a minimum weight limit of 2,650 pounds, which is nearly 1,000 pounds lighter than a Factory Stock Showdown car, and a manual transmission is mandatory. The COPO Camaros race with a 630-hp Magnuson 2.65-L supercharger, and the DragPak Challengers utilize a 630-hp, 3.0-L Whipple. The Cobra Jet 327 Mustang’s engine combination is a 610-hp, 3.0-L Whipple unit.

Each body must be OEM dimensional, meaning there can be no alterations to the bodies, and each must feature steel-roof and quarter-body panels. Cars in NHRA Holley EFI Factory X race on tires that are 33 inches tall and 10.5 inches wide as well, which are wider than FSS cars.

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 29, 2023) – NHRA and Toyota officials announced today that Toyota will continue as the “Official Car of NHRA” as part of a new multi-year extension.

This continues the long-term partnership between NHRA and Toyota that started in 2002. Toyota became the “Official Car of NHRA” in 2014, with the latest extension continuing the official partnership between the two companies for now more than a decade.

“Toyota is pleased to extend our agreement with the NHRA,” said Paul Doleshal, Group Manager, Motorsports and Assets, Toyota Motor North America. “The partnership with the NHRA has provided a unique platform to promote our Toyota product lineup in markets across the nation with their passionate and dedicated fanbase. We look forward to continuing to build on that momentum for years to come.”

As part of the long-standing partnership with NHRA, Toyota will have a season-long presence at NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series national events and will be featured prominently throughout the NHRA’s television broadcasts on FOX and Fox Sports 1, and on the NHRA social media pages.

Toyota will also continue to enjoy a significant onsite presence at NHRA national events, including trackside signage, in-venue video ad placements the popular Toyota display as part of NHRA’s Nitro Alley and more. The Toyota displays feature a number of interactive items for fans to enjoy and also showcase the Toyota line of vehicles, including a replica Toyota GR Supra Funny Car driven by some of the top NHRA stars.

“For more than 20 years, Toyota has been an integral part of the NHRA at so many levels and we’re thrilled to have them remain as ‘Official Car of the NHRA’ and continue this great partnership,” said Brad Gerber, NHRA Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “Toyota has continually shown a strong commitment to NHRA drag racing and its race teams, and their dedication to innovation on the track has been evident in the outstanding success they’ve enjoyed over the years.”

Along with its “Official Car of NHRA” status, Toyota also works closely with a number of standout race teams in the nitro ranks, including Doug Kalitta, Shawn Langdon and J.R. Todd with Kalitta Motorsports, Antron Brown, Steve Torrence, Justin Ashley, Ron Capps and Alexis DeJoria.

Toyota-supported NHRA teams hit a milestone during 2023 season, as Torrence’s win in Seattle handed Toyota its 200th victory in the NHRA. Toyota ended the season with 210 victories as well as a championship, as Top Fuel veteran Kalitta won his first world title in a winner-take-all final round in Pomona to close out the season. In all, Toyota-supported teams won 17 races in 2023 between the Top Fuel and Funny Car ranks.

Kalitta’s championship handed another world title to Toyota, with the likes of Brown, Capps, Todd, Langdon, Del Worsham, Larry Dixon and Cruz Pedregon also winning world championships under the Toyota umbrella.

  • NHRA AND FOX SPORTS RELEASE TV SCHEDULE FOR 2024 NHRA MISSION FOODS DRAG RACING SERIES SEASON

NHRA AND FOX SPORTS RELEASE TV SCHEDULE FOR 2024 NHRA MISSION FOODS DRAG RACING SERIES SEASON

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 28, 2023) – The NHRA and FOX Sports today announced the television schedule for the upcoming 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season, which includes eight broadcasts on the FOX broadcast network.

All 21 races, plus the Pep Boys NHRA All-Star Callout events in Top Fuel and Funny Car, and the GETTRX NHRA All-Star Callout events in Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle, will be broadcast on either FOX or FS1. The 2024 season in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series opens on March 7-10 with the 55th annual NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway, with the Pep Boys NHRA Top Fuel All-Star Callout being showcased at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 9 on FS1 and eliminations following the next day.

For the fourth consecutive season, a race in September in the Countdown to the Championship will also air on FOX adjacent to a FOX NFL broadcast, allowing NHRA to enjoy a huge platform during its playoffs. That opportunity has continually led to huge audiences, including an average of more than 1.5 million viewers on FOX last year during the broadcast from Maple Grove Raceway.

That marks the final race of the season appearing on the FOX broadcast network, following a summer filled with incredible racing action on the broadcast network. Along with a race to-be-determined on FOX, that includes the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals from Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk (June 30), the Flav-R-Pac NHRA Northwest Nationals from Pacific Raceways (July 21), the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals from Sonoma Raceway (July 28), the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals from Brainerd International Raceway (Aug. 18) and the Pep Boys NHRA Funny Car All-Star Callout in Indy (Sept. 1).

The prestigious 70th annual Dodge Power Brokers NHRA U.S. Nationals, the world’s biggest drag race, will also air from Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park on both FOX and FS1, including five hours of eliminations on FOX on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2 to give fans extensive coverage from the Big Go. A year ago, nearly 2.1 million viewers tuned into original airings of the event, the most for original broadcasts of The Big Go since 2017.

In all, six of the early-season broadcasts on FS1 will enjoy NASCAR lead-ins, putting in NHRA in a prime viewership window. Each of the NHRA All-Star Callout events will receive their own show on Saturday as well, with the GETTRX NHRA Pro Stock All-Star Callout airing at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, May 18 on FS1 from Chicago, and the GETTRX NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle All-Star Callout airing at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 27 from Sonoma.

The NHRA and FOX relationship began in 2016, and NHRA and FOX Sports announced a multiyear extension of their agreement in 2021, including expanded coverage, the NFL adjacent event during the Countdown to the Championship, and five hours of finals coverage at the NHRA U.S. Nationals over Labor Day Weekend each year. The partnership has also led to numerous innovations on the broadcast in recent years, with the NHRA on FOX team collecting numerous Telly awards in 2023.

FOX Sports and NHRA are also scheduling NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series broadcasts, as well as shows featuring the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series across the FOX Sports networks.

NHRA races will also appear in Canada and the Caribbean through FOX Sports Racing as well, as well as through the FOX Sports app.

  • PRO STOCK’S ERICA ENDERS OVERCOMES SLOW START TO CONTINUE DOMINANT RUN, EARN SIXTH TITLE

PRO STOCK’S ERICA ENDERS OVERCOMES SLOW START TO CONTINUE DOMINANT RUN, EARN SIXTH TITLE

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 21, 2023) – Over the course of winning her six championships in Pro Stock, Erica Enders has known that each of them has a decidedly different feel. From her first title to dominant runs in both 2015 and 2022, each one has had its own unique story.

That was especially true during Enders’ 2023 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season, which was a far cry from last year’s incredible run. This season was steeped in adversity and plenty of perseverance, as a slow start had the veteran 14th in points after six races.

But what started with trying times ended once again in pure joy, as Enders and her Elite Motorsports team turned things around at the perfect time. She took over the points lead at the halfway mark of the Countdown to the Championship, became the winningest female in all of motorsports and finished off a brilliant closing stretch in her Johnson’s Horsepowered Garage/Melling Performance Chevrolet Camaro with her sixth Pro Stock world championship, tying her with Warren Johnson for second all-time in class history.

“I think the word that describes this season is tenacity,” said Enders, who also won her fourth title in the past five years. “Every championship has its story and this season is just another reminder that you don’t give up. You doubt yourself and it’s just digging yourself out of that ditch, and coming back and knowing you can get it done and execute. That’s what this season is about – tenacity and not giving up. These moments make all of that hard work worth it. I get to live my dream and I’m grateful.”

A year after winning 10 races, advancing to 13 finals and clinching the title in Las Vegas in dominant fashion, nothing came easy to open the 2023 campaign. Enders lost in the opening round four times in the first six races, with a holeshot loss to Aaron Stanfield in Chicago dropping her to 14th in points.

Enders reflected about the slow start in Bristol, but also felt confident a turnaround was coming. The team turned the corner in Chicago and she rolled to an impressive win in Thunder Valley, qualifying No. 1 and picking up her first victory of the season. She jumped five places in the standings in one weekend and climbed the rest of the season, moving up at least one place in the points at six of the next eight races, taking over the points lead in St. Louis. It was never easy, but Enders and her team never stopped working.

“Our season started really poorly and it took until Chicago to figure our problem out,” Enders said. “We just kept plugging away at it. We knew we didn’t have a horsepower problem and we rallied and figured it out. It’s all about teamwork. That’s where our season turned, but it was still a dogfight, obviously. I’m really thankful for the position we were in and I talk about it all the time, but when our backs are against the wall, my guys perform and execute, and it makes me so proud to be their driver. It was a crazy year and we took the long way here, but we ended up on top.”

Following the win in Bristol, Enders qualified No. 1 in Denver and then won in Topeka, advancing to the semifinals in Indianapolis to open the playoffs in third.

She qualified No. 1 at the first three races in the Countdown to the Championship, advancing to three straight semifinals. After taking the lead in St. Louis, she all but slammed the door shut with clutch performances in Dallas and Las Vegas, earning her NHRA-record 10th victory at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The race prior in Dallas, Enders won her 47th career national event, sending her to the all-time lead for wins by a female. It was a thrilling moment for Enders, whose late-season run only strengthened her remarkable Pro Stock legacy. A first-round win at the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals clinched a sixth world championship, breaking a tie with Greg Anderson and Jeg Coughlin Jr. It may have not been the spectacular wire-to-wire run to the title from a year ago, but this one was just as important, especially considering the road Enders and her team traveled to reach the ultimate prize.

“I questioned myself, too. It’s easy to get down on yourself and doubt yourself,” Enders said. “It’s easy to be positive when you’re winning. It’s when you’re going through all the troublesome times when you have to fight with all you’ve got. It’s definitely a gut check and something that’s not easy to go through. Going through those moments, we still had our core people and nobody pointed fingers. We just went to work and it just shows you what happens when you don’t give up. We do still have it, it turns out.”

The 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series begins March 7-10 with the 55th annual NHRA Gatornationals at historic Gainesville Raceway. For more information about NHRA, including the 2024 schedule, please visit www.NHRA.com.

  • FUNNY CAR’S MATT HAGAN JOINS ELITE COMPANY BY EARNING FOURTH FUNNY CAR WORLD TITLE

FUNNY CAR’S MATT HAGAN JOINS ELITE COMPANY BY EARNING FOURTH FUNNY CAR WORLD TITLE

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 17, 2023) – It wasn’t the exact way Matt Hagan had planned to win his fourth NHRA Funny Car world championship, but it was the final point that showed his championship was about an overall impressive body of work and not just one particular run.

The strong season from start to finish proved to be pivotal, as Hagan took the points lead into the final event of the NHRA season, the In-N-Out Burger NHRA Finals. It proved to be the difference, too, in a tightly-contested points battle between Hagan, Robert Hight and Bob Tasca III.

The trio was only separated by 17 points heading into the finale, but in a wild turn of events, each lost in the second round on Sunday at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip. That meant the championship belonged to Hagan and his 11,000-horsepower Dodge Direct Connection Charger SRT Hellcat, securing a distinct honor for the longtime standout.

Not only did it give Tony Stewart Racing its first NHRA world championship, but it also handed Hagan his fourth title, allowing him to a join a group that includes John Force, Don Prudhomme and Kenny Bernstein as the only Funny Car drivers in NHRA history with four or more world titles.

“It’s about our body of work and it paid off,” Hagan said. “You have to reflect on that and it’s just incredible. We won six races and I can’t say enough about my team. They’re all coming back next year and everyone is excited about that.

“It speaks volumes to the group (Tony) has assembled and his ability to lead as a team owner. It’s just unbelievable we were able to do that this year. There’s a lot of heavy hitters out here and it came down to the last day of the last race. It says a lot about our class and this is why we do it.”

Hagan impressed from the outset of the 2023 campaign and never really let up, opening up with early-season wins in Gainesville, Pomona and the four-wide race in Las Vegas. Unlike last year, there was no summer swoon, as Hagan and his team, led by crew chief Dickie Venables, found an ideal tune-up in warm weather, advancing to finals in Norwalk, Denver and Topeka, also winning the final race on Thunder Mountain.

He entered the Countdown to the Championship second in points and after a slow start, Hagan rolled to a pair of critical wins in St. Louis and Dallas. That gave him the lead for good, which proved pivotal when things went haywire for all the top contenders in Pomona.

“You’ve got to be in these high-pressure situations to grow, and my guys have been blood, sweat and tears all season long,” Hagan said. “I’m just glad to bring this trophy home. It’s super special to me. I’ve surrounded myself with people better than me and that’s why I’m in this position. I’ve settled in with a great group and our body of work speaks for itself.”

Hagan and his team weren’t wildly flashy, only clocking one No. 1 qualifier, but they were remarkably consistent and quick, qualifying second two times, third five times and fourth five more times. The team ran well in a multitude of conditions and Hagan was always on his game, advancing to eight final rounds and picking up 40 round wins this year.

He’s now a win away from 50 career Funny Car victories – after also picking up his 50th career No. 1 qualifier in 2023 – and fully thankful of what he has achieved in the sport and the spot in NHRA Funny Car history he has carved out.

“Looking back, I never set out to be a drag racer,” Hagan said. “It’s just something that happened. I never would have dreamed to make it into a career. It’s just incredible to be in the ranks of those caliber of drivers. It blows my mind and doesn’t even feel real. You get to create those moments and those memories, and that’s exciting.”
