Chevrolet seeks to carry momentum to Virginia track
John Force Racing has recorded five victories in six Top Fuel and Funny Car events

DETROIT (May 12, 2022) – John Force doesn’t plan to slow down.

When the 16-time National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Funny Car champion can crack a .05-of-a-second light, blast off to a 335.07 mph run in the 11,000 horsepower PEAK BlueDEF Platinum Chevrolet Camaro SS and keep winning, why should he? Even at age 73.

Force enters the Virginia NHRA Nationals this weekend with renewed confidence after winning the four-wide race May 1 at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina, adding to his amazing career. The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series returns to Virginia Motorsports Park for the first time since 2019.

“I’m excited to go to Richmond, but I’m going with a little different attitude. My race car has found consistency,” said Force, a four-time winner at the track.

Driver and Camaro were consistently at peak performance at zMAX Dragway, where Force won in the four-wide format for the second year in a row. He qualified No. 1 for the 164th time with a track-record run of 3.850-seconds, set the track speed record with the 335.07 mph pass and went on to post his 155th career win.

“Things just seem to happen where you’re destined to win,” Force said. “It was amazing. On some days, magical things just happen. Things went right and we were able to win the race. It was like it was destiny and it was a great weekend for my team. To finally get a win this year gives me a lot of confidence.”

The next Funny Car victory by Force or teammate Robert Hight, driver of the Auto Club of Southern California Camaro SS who sits second in championship points entering the seventh of 22 events, will be the 150th for Chevrolet since 1967. The Camaro has been to the winner’s circle 69 times.

John Force Racing owns both ends of the Funny Car records at Virginia Motorsports Park — 3.899 seconds by Force and 326.32 mph by Hight – both in May 2019.

The four JFR drivers have recorded five victories in the six races – two by Hight to start the season, two in a row by Brittany Force in the Flav-R-Pac/Monster Energy Chevrolet dragster and one by her father. Austin Prock, driver of the Montana Brand/Rocky Mountain Twist Chevrolet dragster, was runner-up at Pomona and shown promise as he returns to full-season competition for the first time since 2019 when he was voted NHRA rookie of the year.

Hight was runner-up in the four-wide final at zMAX Dragway, and Brittany Force enters the race weekend as the Top Fuel points leader.

The event will also feature the third round of the Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown. Len Lottig won the opener at Gainesville in his Chevrolet COPO Camaro and former series champion David Barton was runner-up in his COPO Camaro in the four-wide event two weeks ago at zMAX Dragway.

FS1 will telecast eliminations at 6:30 p.m. ET Sunday, May 15.

Pro Stock competitors return to NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series competition June 3-5 at New England Dragway in New Hampshire. Erica Enders, a three-time winner this season in the Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro SS, tops the standings.

    CHEVROLET FROM THE COCKPIT

    TOP FUEL

BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, FLAV-R-PAC/MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (winner at Las Vegas and Houston; first in points): “Richmond is next on the list and after a couple of years away, our Flav-R-Pac / Monster Energy team is excited to return. We head into the Virginia Motorsports Park in the points lead after back-to-back wins and are looking to leave in the same position. Our goals are to qualify in the top three, make three consistent qualifying runs and have a long race day so we can grow that points lead.”

AUSTIN PROCK, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONTANA BRAND/ROCKY MOUNTAIN TWIST CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (runner-up at Pomona opener): “It was a good weekend off celebrating Mother’s Day, always nice to spend time with family and friends, but this Montana Brand team is excited to get back to business. We’ve been getting this car back into winning form and can’t wait to see what our performance looks like this weekend. Hoping the weather holds off, and we can put on a showing for our awesome NHRA fans. We haven’t been back to Richmond since my rookie season, so it’ll be great to be back.”

    FUNNY CAR

JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, PEAK BLUEDEF PLATINUM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (four-time winner at track; five-time No. 1 qualifier; holds track Funny Car elapsed time record, set in 2019): “We’ll be really trying to put on a show, maybe set some more records. I’m feeling good coming off a win. The credit really goes to Danny Hood and Tim Fabrisi who run the PEAK BlueDEF Chevy. I know drivers always get all the credit, but it really is those guys and the whole team that help get the job done, couldn’t do it without them.”

ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTO CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (two-time winner this season; second in points; holds track Funny Car speed record, set in 2019): “It’s been a decent start to the season for this Auto Club team. We’ve had some consistency which is what we lacked last year. We just need to keep it going. There’s room for improvement, there’s always room for improvement and I think this team has high expectations. Jimmy Prock and Christ Cunningham are two of the best, so it’s hard not to be confident with them on your side. I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do in Richmond. Really glad to be heading back after a couple years. Hopefully, we can pull out a win and get this Auto Club Chevy in the winner’s circle and back in the points lead.”

    Notes of Interest

    ● The Virginia NHRA Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park in North Dinwiddie, located just south of the state capitol in Richmond, hosts the seventh event on the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series’ 22-race calendar. Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) brings its two fulltime entries – one in Top Fuel for nine-time event winner Leah Pruett and one in Funny Car for three-time Funny Car champion Matt Hagan – to the commonwealth in the series’ return to Virginia Motorsports Park after a two-year hiatus.

    ● Pruett and Hagan come into Virginia representing Mobil 1 and Smithfield, respectively. Pruett’s Top Fuel dragster carries the colors of Mobil 1, the world’s leading synthetic motor oil brand. Meanwhile, Hagan’s Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car is emblazoned with Smithfield, a vertically integrated global food company and one of the world’s largest pork producers and processors that has been headquartered in Smithfield, Virginia, since 1936.

    ● Pruett’s Mobil 1 livery and Hagan’s Smithfield paint scheme incorporate a patriotic theme in support of Military Appreciation Month, which is celebrated every May. TSR salutes all those who serve and have served, and honors the sacrifices made by service members and their families. Two of TSR’s crew members, Thomas Brown and Chris Shuron, are both veterans. Brown, a clutch assistant who handles tire preparation on Pruett’s Top Fuel dragster, served in the Marines where he was a lance corporal. Shuron, who oversees body and tire preparation on Hagan’s Funny Car, was a sergeant and squad leader in the Army.

    ● The Virginia NHRA Nationals will mark Pruett’s 178th career Top Fuel start and her third at Virginia. For Hagan, the Virginia NHRA Nationals will be his milestone 300th career Funny Car start and his fourth at Virginia.

    ● Virginia represents a home race for Hagan. The 41-time event winner is a native of Christiansburg, Virginia, located 190 miles west of the track. And his sponsor for the race, Smithfield, is located 72 miles east.

    ● Hagan comes into Virginia leading the Funny Car championship standings with a 22-point advantage over Robert Hight. Hagan’s record is 16-4 through the first six events in 2022, giving him an 80-percent win ratio to represent the best start of his career.

    ● Hagan and Pruett are eyeing their first victory at the Virginia NHRA Nationals, and they are both seeking their first No. 1 qualifier at the event.

Leah Pruett, Driver of the Mobil 1 Top Fuel Dragster

With two Four-Wide events in the season’s first six races – both of which came in the last three events – has it been a challenge to establish consistent routines because those events are so different?

“It has, especially for someone like me that’s been working on new, systematic practice procedures. I take every competition challenge for what they are, two-wide or four-wide, with weeks to practice and visualize to prepare for anything that comes, no matter what.”

After Virginia, there’s a two-week break before the season really heats up. Does Virginia represent a good opportunity to learn and then apply those key learnings before you begin the summer stretch where you go from the East Coast to the West Coast?

“Richmond is a key race, as we’ve continued to build data and confidence and have a greater spreadsheet. There’s no reason we can’t go deep into rounds and even win this race. It’s key because it shuts the door on the start of the season, our warm up per se, and opens our expectations of delivering results. I’m excited for that because this team is on the right track.”

Mobil 1 doesn’t just adorn your car this weekend in Virginia, it’s inside your car every weekend. In a sport decided by thousandths of a second, how important is it to have the ultimate in both efficiency and protection in not only your engine oils, but in all the oils and lubricants that flow through your Top Fuel dragster?

“Showcasing Mobil 1 on the side of the car is a symbol of the incredible protection and performance it delivers inside the Dodge HEMI. Having a reliable oil eliminates concern for mechanical damage that could be detrimental to the outcome of a race and the health and wellness of our parts. We literally have a well-oiled machine, and I’m proud to showcase that to our fans.”

Matt Hagan, Driver of the Smithfield Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car

After the Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, North Carolina, do you look forward to getting back to the traditional, one-on-one style of drag racing this weekend in Virginia?

“I’m glad we have the four-wides behind us coming into Richmond and can focus on two-wide racing for the rest of the year because everything we do is repetition. I’m looking forward to running the Smithfield car, which is a new partner and scheme for me. I think the car looks great and I’m proud to carry patriotic colors for Military Appreciation Month. I feel confident coming into Richmond, even though we blew the tires off of it in Charlotte and went out in the second round.”

With two Four-Wide events in the season’s first six races – both of which came in the last three events – has it been a challenge to establish consistent routines because those events are so different?

“There is a lot going on at a four-wide event and it complicates things sometimes. You can be planning to run in a specific lane and at the last minute, lane choice can change. I think part of that is the reason we had the result we did at Charlotte. We can blame it on any factor we want, but at the end of the day, we went home early. I’m looking forward to two-wide racing and things feeling normal again.”

Because you’re from Virginia, does success at a Virginia track taste a little sweeter?

“At the end of the day, both the track and myself are in Virginia, so we want to keep the trophy in Virginia. I think it’s very possible the way I’m driving and the way the car is performing and responding to the changes that Dickie (Venables, crew chief) and the guys are making. I just want to say my guys are doing a great job and I’m really proud of them. I’m going to do a good job on the driving side of things and we’re going to try to go win this race.”

    ● Currently leads the Funny Car championship standings with a 22-point advantage over Robert Hight.

    Notes of Interest

    ● Hagan was selected as the NHRA’s Funny Car “Marquee Matchup” for Round 1 of eliminations against Alexander, Lee and McIntire.

    ● Pruett’s No. 2 qualifying position was her highest start through the first six events of 2022.

    ● Pruett was selected as the NHRA’s Top Fuel “Marquee Matchup” for Round 1 of eliminations against Force, Massey and Schumacher.

    ● Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) hosted nearly 400 Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) guests throughout the Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals. SHR is the NASCAR team Stewart co-owns with Haas Automation founder Gene Haas. SHR is just nine miles north of the track in Kannapolis, North Carolina.

    ● Hagan will make his milestone 300th career Funny Car start in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series’ next event May 13-15 at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Leah Pruett, Driver of the Dodge Power Brokers Top Fuel Dragster

“I think determination is our key factor here. Having five plain runs down the track and chipping away at it, we are a product of the short end of the stick of a really good race. We missed it by just a couple thousandths to advance. Going into Richmond, we will take a lot away from this weekend from the warm track to our warmup and setup. I started out really hitting the tree well in qualifying. As I tried to work on it, I actually graduated the other way. I didn’t have the peak performance that I wanted on Sunday, but it was almost enough to get the job done. I will be right back on my Christmas tree every day and we will be making sure all eight of our Mopar cylinders are lit. The execution of this team has been impeccable, and that’s why we have the consistency that we have. We will continue that and look forward. My consolation prize is that I get to spend a lot of time with the fans here in Charlotte. In between this weekend and Richmond, we’re working on a spare car, so a lot is happening between now and then.”

Matt Hagan, Driver of the Shelor Motor Mile Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car

“I’m glad the four-wides are behind us. I would’ve loved to have won it, but it’s a chaotic event. It’s a great show for the fans, but what we normally do is repetition, doing the same thing every time. Swapping lanes, trying to figure out who did what, who to pick and who did what is a lot going on. At the end of the day, we still leave here with the points lead. We’ve gone some rounds, we’ve been qualifying well, and the car is running good. There will be peaks and valleys with drag racing, that’s just part of it. There will be a lot of highs and a lot of lows and a little in between. I would’ve loved to have won for Shelor Motor Mile and my family’s company. Maybe we will get them in Richmond. I’m looking forward to crawling back in a racecar and keep what we’re doing going.”

David Barton of Reading, Pennsylvania, was runner-up in his COPO Camaro in the second round of the Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown. Len Lottig won the first of the eight scheduled races in the series in March at Gainesville., Florida.

The Virginia NHRA Nationals on May 13-15 at Virginia Motorsports Park is the next event for Chevrolet Top Fuel and Funny Car teams. The event was not held in 2021 or 2020. FS1 will telecast eliminations at 6:30 p.m. ET Sunday, May 15.

    CHEVROLET FROM THE COCKPIT

    TOP FUEL
BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, FLAV-R-PAC/MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET DRAGSTER: “It was a tough weekend here in Charlotte. This Flav-R-Pac team came in here with back-to-back wins and just had that momentum moving forward. We went out qualified seventh, and it was a tough position to be in,” Force said. “We got past first round but in that second round we got beat and had to pack up early. It was still a good weekend for the John Force Racing teams with my dad winner and Robert getting the runner-up.”

AUSTIN PROCK, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONTANA BRAND/ROCKY MOUNTAIN TWIST CHEVROLET DRAGSTER: “It was a frustrating way to end our weekend. I felt like we had a competitive car all weekend and I was hoping it would all come together this morning but it didn’t,” Prock said. “First round losses are always tough to swallow, especially because we all had high expectations going into this morning. It was a tough break but luckily we get to play again in Richmond. I think the team is definitely on the right track. We just have to get our ducks in a row and we should be fine.”

    FUNNY CAR
JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, PEAK BLUEDEF PLATINUM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS: “I walked down to the trailer and I said, ‘Danny, I got to get my energy up, you have got to get me fired up’ and he yells ‘swap motors’ and awe man, my blood pressure shot up and I was going to tip over. I want to take a minute to thank Blue Def, Power Solar, Auto Club, Cornwell, Monster, Flav-R-Pac, Montana Brand, and Chevrolet. And hey, Bruton, I love you. This one is for my daughter Adria and just shows that I can still hang in the fight. We just keep fighting and we are going to be fine.

I wanted to do this last year for Bruton, you know what I am saying. I have been trying to find God for a lot of years, I am working on it, my wife works on it. So, I don’t want to get into that, but things just seem to happen to me in my life that are almost like you are destined. And Bruton Smith last year, when I spoke with him on the phone, was struggling but now he is better. To whatever degree, I got the win for him and mentioned him a few times down there. What was amazing is going up for the final, I was struggling as a driver, I will be honest. These kids are just good, and I have to jump on that tree and attack it whenever I can. What was funny was that we were sitting in the pits, and I told Danny, my crew chief, that they get the credit. I was standing there, and I said, ‘Danny, somebody fire me up. If I don’t get some energy I am going to go out there and get treed.’ And he goes, ‘how about this? Switch motors’. And I said, ‘what are you talking about?’ He said, ‘the motor is dead’. All the sudden they start ripping it apart. I was like, ‘no, its time to tow up, are you going to do this in ten minutes?’. Whatever time they took, they made it and it was amazing. But my energy went straight to the top. Its hard to find that moment that you need when you really need that fire in your belly.

ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTO CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS: “It was a great day for John Force Racing. Any time you can get two cars to the final, it’s a good day. If this Auto Club Chevy team is going to come up short, I’d rather it be to John and that PEAK Chevy than anyone else,” Hight said. “Ran into some issues there at the end that we’ll get figured out and be ready to come do it all again out in Richmond.”

CONCORD, N.C. (May 1, 2022) – Three days shy of his 73rd birthday, John Force proved he’s as sharp as ever behind the wheel of an NHRA Funny Car. Force completed a clean sweep in Sunday’s exhilarating Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway, grabbing his 155th career win in addition to a new track speed record.

Force – who also earned No. 1 qualifier honors – became the first NHRA driver to eclipse the 335-mile-per-hour mark at zMAX Dragway during the first round of eliminations. Force’s 3.914-second, 328.66-mph run in the final, though, was the one which spurred the 16-time World Champion to his second consecutive four-wide win at zMAX.

“We came out here (for the final) and I wasn’t even sure if the motor could run (after the semifinal round),” Force said. “I almost apologized to Robert (Hight, Force’s teammate and competitor in the final). I wanted to say, ‘That wasn’t supposed to happen.’

“I’ve wanted a win so badly this year. As tired as I am and as much as I’ve been beaten up, you can get back on top. This gave me confidence.”

Mike Salinas powered his Top Fuel car to victory on Sunday with a 3.708-second, 330.47-mph pass which topped the finals and gave Salinas his fifth career victory.

“My guys are amazing,” Salinas said. “I want to thank them for everything they do. It’s just amazing to win again. It’s so hard to believe. We’ve worked so hard to get here. We’re racing against the best people in the world. It’s so hard to win that I feel bad for the guys who didn’t win today. I know how hard you have to strive.”

Steve Johnson lost No. 1 qualifier status at the end of Saturday’s Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying, but no one could stop Johnson from scoring the win on Sunday. A 6.740-second, 200.65-mph pass in the final enabled Johnson – who also set a new dragway Pro Stock Motorcycle elapsed-time record – to join Force as back-to-back winners of the Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals.

“I don’t even know where to start,” said Johnson, who took over the class points lead with his win on Sunday. “I just love our sport so much. We’ve been chasing this for 30 years and now, we’ve won two in a row. This is such a special place (to win).

“I absolutely feel like we can contend for the title. I mean, that’s what I want. I spend every day on this. I sleep at the (race) shop. Our sponsors, our team, all of these people, they make this happen. Contending for this championship is why we’re here.”

    Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals

    • John Force set a new zMAX Dragway record across all classes in speed and a Funny Car record in elapsed time during a scintillating Night of Fire in Friday’s opening rounds of Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals qualifying at zMAX Dragway; Justin Ashley (Top Fuel) and Steve Johnson (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also claimed provisional No. 1 qualifier status ahead of Saturday’s final round of time trials

CONCORD, N.C. (April 29, 2022) – John Force’s bid to outshine his victory in last year’s Funny Car portion of the Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals got off to a great start on Friday. The 16-time World Champion’s second qualifying run scorched zMAX Dragway’s pavement to the tune of 334.24 miles per hour in 3.850 seconds – both track records.

Force’s speed, which came in the second round of qualifying, shattered a zMAX record across all Nitro classes, while his elapsed time eclipsed daughter Courtney’s 2017 Funny Car run by 0.001 seconds.

“It was straight as an arrow,” said Force, whose speed topped Jack Beckman’s 2019 run by 0.17 mph. “I thought it might get loose on me, but it stuck. That Chevrolet has some really good aerodynamics. It was like I had power steering, the way it drove for me. I talked to my son-in-law, (crew chief) Daniel Hood, and told him we needed to dial this thing back a bit. He said he dialed it back a bit, but the cool air tuned it up.

“It was a good night for my team. I’m driving it right down the groove. I’ve got my stuff together. (Saturday) is a new day. (Faster speeds) are out there. (Ron) Capps, Robert Hight, those guys are going to chase it. But it’s exciting for me. Just to be in the hunt is exciting.”

Justin Ashley bested Brittany Force’s hopes of a Force-dominated Friday in the night’s final four-wide Top Fuel run. Ashley’s 3.669-second, 331.77-mph pass gave the third-year driver the inside line on his first No. 1 qualifier.

“That would be great,” Ashley said. “We’ve been fortunate to accomplish a lot in a short period of time, but one thing we’ve not had yet was to get a No. 1 qualifier and now, we’ve got a shot at that. We’re going to keep our foot to the floor and keep at it.

“This was smooth, this was straight. It felt good. A night like that, I can’t wait to go back and look at the video. To see that No. 1 spot was a really good feeling not only for me, but for the guys who work on this car. They deserve it.”

Steve Johnson paced Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying on Friday with a 6.767-second, 198.70-mph pass.

“The bike was good, but if I’d have ridden it better it’d have gone even faster,” Johnson said. “Our bikes nowadays are very, very challenging to ride now, but I think we’re in a new realm (of speed and elapsed time). There is a lot of stuff going on in six-and-a-half seconds: shifting, moving your body, going through the bumps. It’s a lot of work to ride it perfectly.”

The Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals continue on Saturday, setting the stage for white-knuckled, edge-of-your-seat eliminations on Sunday. Every ticket is a pit pass, giving fans unmatched access to the drivers and crews who tame the 11,000-horsepower machines and push them to their limits after the tree illuminates.

John Force Racing has enviable Top Fuel, Funny Car record in event at zMAX Dragway
DETROIT (April 28, 2022) – Having won two National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Top Fuel races in a row, Brittany Force is enthusiastically looking forward to this weekend’s Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals.

The driver of the Flav-R-Pac/Monster Energy Chevrolet dragster will arrive at zMAX Dragway in Concord, North Carolina, as the Top Fuel points leader after her April 24 victory at Houston Raceway Park. Her 13th career Top Fuel win followed a victory April 3 in the four-wide event in Las Vegas – the first time she has won back-to-back races.

“Getting back-to-back wins is huge for us, and we’re back in the seat this weekend so we’ll try to do it again in Charlotte,” said Force, who was the No. 1 qualifier and runner-up in the 2021 four-wide event at the track. “All the hard work by our team, for it to pay off with two wins in a row, it’s great for them and I’m really proud of all of my guys.”
Her father – 16-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force – was also the No. 1 qualifier and won the 2021 four-wide race — 11 years after he won the inaugural four-wide event at zMAX Dragway. Both earned top qualifier honors in the conventional race in July, with Brittany again rolling to a runner-up finish.

Brittany holds the Top Fuel track records, set last May, of 3.662 seconds and 333.49 mph.

“Our Flav-R-Pac / Monster Energy team is ahead of ourselves compared to our 2021 season, when we had only one win halfway through the season in Topeka,” said Brittany Force, who won at zMAX Dragway in 2016 to become the first female racer to win a four-wide event. “We already have two wins under our belt and are only five races in.

“That sets the tone for a strong season. We are in a good position and currently in the points lead. Our team has had success at four-wide races and we’re looking to make it three in a row this weekend.”

In 2014, Robert Hight won the Funny Car four-wide race at zMAX Dragway, starting a three-race streak of Victory Circle visits. Teammate John Force, who was runner-up to Hight a month earlier at the Gatornationals, placed second. Hight won two weeks later at Houston and defeated teammate Courtney Force in the final in mid-May at Atlanta. Overall, Hight either won or was runner-up in six of the seven races to start the season. He went on to record five wins for the season.

With two wins and a 12-3 elimination round record in the Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS to start the ’22 season, Hight heads to Concord second in the Funny Car standings.

“We’ve had a lot of success at zMAX and we’ll be looking to add that success this weekend,” said Hight, who is tied for most pro wins at the track with six.
The event will also feature drivers of the Chevrolet COPO Camaro in the second round of the Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown. Len Lottig drove his COPO Camaro to victory at Gainesville in the first of the eight events.

Chevrolet Pro Stock teams and drivers are idle until the NHRA New England Nationals on June 3-5 in Epping, New Hampshire. Erica Enders, who has won the past two races and three overall in the Melling Performance Chevrolet Camaro SS for Elite Motorsports, is the points leader.

FS1 will telecast eliminations at 7 p.m. ET Sunday, May 1.

BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, FLAV-R-PAC/MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (winner at Las Vegas and Houston; first in points): “Heading to Charlotte Four-Wide this weekend on such a high after back-to-back wins in Las Vegas and Houston. Our Flav-R-Pac / Monster Energy team is ahead of ourselves compared to our 2021 season, when we had only one win halfway through the season in Topeka. We already have two wins under our belt and are only five races in. That sets the tone for a strong season. We are in a good position and currently in the points lead. Our team has had success at Four-Wide races and we’re looking to make it three in a row this weekend.”

AUSTIN PROCK, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONTANA BRAND/ROCKY MOUNTAIN TWIST CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (runner-up at Pomona opener): “I’m happy to be back in Charlotte for the Four-Wide Nationals. I’m looking forward to going some rounds and showing what this Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist team is capable. We’re striding in the right direction, learning a lot. I’m really comfortable in the car. It’s going to be a successful weekend; I can feel it.”

    FUNNY CAR
JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, PEAK BLUEDEF PLATINUM CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (two-time winner of the four-wide format at the track; fifth in points): “I’m not worried about this PEAK team. Danny Hood and Tim Fabrisi, they’ll be ready to go in Charlotte.”

ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTO CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (two-time winner this season; second in points; six-time winner at the track, including twice in four-wide format): “We’ve had a great start to the season, there’s no doubt about it. These guys have been working hard and we’ve had some consistency. The Auto Club Chevy has qualified well, picked up some little points and we’ve got some round wins on Sunday. We just need to pick it up, turn on those win lights. That’s something I think we can do in Charlotte. We’ve had a lot of success at zMAX and we’ll be looking to add that success this weekend.”

Toyota Partners with Ron Capps Beginning with Charlotte 4-Wide Nationals

CONCORD, N.C. (April 28, 2022) – Toyota announced today that Ron Capps and his newly formed race team of Ron Capps Motorsports will begin fielding the Toyota GR Supra Funny Car at this weekend’s 4-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway in Concord, N.C. The addition of Ron Capps Motorsports will expand the footprint of Toyota Gazoo Racing North America (TGRNA) to three GR Supra Funny Cars competing for the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series championship.

“Ron Capps is a proven champion in NHRA competition and all around one of the truly entertaining and engaging personalities in the pit area,” said Paul Doleshal, Group Manager, Motorsports, Toyota Motor North America (TMNA). “The drivers that pilot not only our GR Supra Funny Cars, but all of our TGRNA vehicles in NHRA competition are not only talented behind the wheel, but also as ambassadors for our brand on and off the race track. And we couldn’t be happier to welcome Ron and his team to the family.”

Capps has been a dominant driver in Funny Car competition every time he rolls to the starting line, as the California-native owns the second-most wins in NHRA Funny Car history. The two-time (2016 and 2021) and defending Funny Car World Champion has amassed 68 event titles (67 in Funny Car, 1 in Top Fuel) to date in his career and has made 131 final round appearances (129 in Funny Car, 2 in Top Fuel).

TGRNA provides its NHRA teams with tow vehicles, along with engineering, technology and trackside support. In addition to Ron Capps Motorsports, Toyota will continue to support the GR Supra Funny Cars fielded by DC Motorsports and Kalitta Motorsports.

“For Ron Capps Motorsports to partner with Toyota is literally a dream come true,” said Capps. “One thing I’ve learned pretty quickly as a team owner is how important it is to surround yourself with good people, and nothing exemplifies that more than what I’ve experienced with Toyota already. The commitment, the passion and the history with Toyota goes hand-in-hand with our NHRA fans, and as someone who grew up in the sport, I can’t tell you how exciting it is for me to represent and join the family of Toyota drivers. It’s an exciting partnership for us and being able to debut the NAPA AUTO PARTS GR Supra Funny Car is one of the highlights of my NHRA career.”

Ron Capps joins a TGRNA driver lineup that includes four-time Top Fuel Champion Steve Torrence, three-time NHRA Top Fuel champion Antron Brown, U.S. Nationals winner Alexis DeJoria, 2020 NHRA Rookie of the Year Justin Ashley, 49-time race winner Doug Kalitta, 2013 Top Fuel champion Shawn Langdon and 2018 Funny Car champion J.R. Todd.

Toyota drivers have won 138 Top Fuel and 44 Funny Car races along with six Top Fuel and three Funny Car championships during its tenure in the series.

    Notes of Interest

    ● The Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals near Charlotte, North Carolina, is the sixth event on the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series’ 22-race calendar in 2022. Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) brings its two fulltime entries – one in Top Fuel for nine-time event winner Leah Pruett and one in Funny Car for three-time Funny Car champion Matt Hagan.

    ● Hagan comes into Charlotte as Funny Car’s most recent winner. The Christiansburg, Virginia-native scored his 41st career win in the 35th NHRA SpringNationals last Sunday at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas. The triumph served as a bookend for Hagan at Houston, as he scored his first career Funny Car win at the track on April 11, 2010. The 35th SpringNationals served as Houston’s final race, as the track has since closed. Soon after Finals concluded, the new property owners began repurposing the drag racing facility into an industrial park.

    ● Hagan’s win at Houston expanded his lead in the Funny Car championship standing to 60 points over his nearest purser, Robert Hight.

Shelor Motor Mile, a family-owned car dealership serving the Christiansburg, Virginia, area since 1974, will adorn Hagan’s Dodge SRT Hellcat Funny Car at Charlotte. In addition to a large selection of cars and trucks from various manufacturers, Shelor Motor Mile also has an in-house financing department that can help customers determine a financial plan for buying their desired vehicle. They also make trading-in a vehicle a seamless process and offer a sizable assortment of pre-owned cars. Shelor Motor Mile is owned by Hagan’s father, David Hagan, who will attend the Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals with Virginia Tech head football coach Brent Pry.

Dodge Power Brokers and Direct Connection return to Pruett’s Top Fuel dragster this weekend in Charlotte. The Dodge Power Brokers program serves as the exclusive source for Direct Connection, Dodge’s factory-backed performance parts program, which is equipped with staff trained to deliver a performance-focused customer service experience.

    ● The Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals will mark Pruett’s 177th career Top Fuel start. It’ll be her 17th overall start at Charlotte and her ninth in the Four-Wide Nationals. For Hagan, the Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals will be his 299th career Funny Car start. It’ll be his 23rd overall start at Charlotte and his 11th in the Four-Wide Nationals.

    ● Pruett is eyeing for her first victory at the Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals. In 2017 and 2019, she advanced to the final quad at Charlotte. In 2015, Pruett raced to a semifinal appearance at the Carolina Nationals. Pruett is seeking her first No. 1 qualifier at the event.

    ● Hagan has three career wins at Charlotte. Two of his victories came in 2011 and 2014 during the Carolina Nationals. Hagan won the Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals on April 21, 2013 (4.071 ET at 315.34 mph) when he defeated Blake Alexander (4.156 ET at 294.56 mph), Tim Wilkerson (5.141 ET at 153.39 mph) and Chad Head (10.525 ET at 67.05 mph). Hagan is seeking his first No. 1 qualifier at the event.

    ● Hagan was the first Funny Car driver to break the four-second barrier when he completed a run of 3.995 seconds in 2011 at Charlotte. His milestone run was commemorated with a sign on the retaining wall near the starting line.

    ● The Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals will be a family affair for TSR as team owner Tony Stewart will host approximately 350 people from Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), the NASCAR team he co-owns with Haas Automation founder Gene Haas. SHR is just nine miles north of the track in Kannapolis, North Carolina.

    ● DYK? Charlotte was the first four-lane drag strip on the NHRA schedule. The ground-breaking took place on Feb. 5, 2008 and a total of 1,876 workers were involved in the track’s construction. Together they worked 636,000 combined man hours and through this tremendous effort, the 13-month construction project was completed in only six months. The first NHRA sanctioned Four-Wide event took place in March 2010.

Leah Pruett, Driver of the Dodge Power Brokers Top Fuel Dragster

After a strong weekend at the last Four-Wide Nationals event at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, how much confidence does that give you and the Dodge Power Brokers team at Charlotte?

“It brings just the right amount of confidence to the team to push a little harder in our power window, which will hopefully result in a notch or two lower qualifying position. Lower altitude and cooler temperatures will make for a much quicker and faster four-wide than Vegas.”

Describe the feeling of teamwork your Dodge Power Brokers crew is experiencing now that the NHRA has completed five events this season and you’re able to start gathering more data with each run.

“Expediting our data acquisition has been the goal, and still is, but we’ve gained another focus of data organization, which is a project of its own. That continues to prove we have the right forward thinking brains in our operation.”

What will the feeling of team comradery be having approximately 350 guests from Stewart-Haas Racing supporting TSR at Charlotte?

“For many, it will feel like meeting your half siblings for the first time. I feel there of course will be an extended will to perform well, but no degree of pressure none of us haven’t been under. The cool part is that these guests are racers too and know how difficult wins are to get at any level, so the respect factor over expectations is what really puts the ‘home’ in the homecoming race.”

Matt Hagan, Driver of the Shelor Motor Mile Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car

Having advanced to the finals in four out of the first five NHRA events in 2022, what’s the confidence level of you and the Shelor Motor Mile crew going into Charlotte?

“Rolling into the Four-Wide race at Charlotte is always chaotic. Coming off our win in Houston, we are carrying a lot of momentum this year. We’ve advanced to the finals in four out of the first five events to start the season. That momentum is really hard to get in a Funny car. The consistency comes from our guys on the team and what they do every day putting the parts and pieces together. I want everyone to realize how it’s about our guys, not me as a driver. It’s about Dickie (Venables, crew chief), Mike Knudson (co-crew chief), Alex Conaway (car chief) and everyone that works on the car. Consistency is key and without them doing what they do, we can’t do anything. We have a team we can go out there and win a championship with. We’re making a statement and we’re here to win. Everyone is working hard and we’re ready to win more races.”

What will the feeling of team comradery be having approximately 350 guests from Stewart-Haas Racing supporting TSR at Charlotte?

“It will be awesome to have almost 350 Stewart-Haas Racing guests at the track. It is extremely cool. I’m really excited to meet all of the guys and gals that support what Tony (Stewart) does. It’ll be neat for them to see an NHRA event and all that goes into it.”

What does it mean to have Shelor Motor Mile on your Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car Charlotte?

“It’s really important to me to run my family’s Shelor Motor Mile scheme. It’s my family’s business and we have over 900 employees. We’re going to bring quite a few of them to the race this weekend, so there will be a lot going on. I would love nothing more than to get my dad a win with his new logo and paint scheme on my Funny Car. To be able to bring the trophy back to him would mean a lot. Charlotte is considered my home track because it’s only two hours from my house. Everyone comes out, so I’m sure we’ll sell a lot of Matt Hagan shirts this weekend. It’ll be people on top of people, but I love it and thrive in it. The more the merrier. I love our fan base and everyone that supports us. We’ll have everyone out there that’s supported me from short tracks, all the way up to winning a championship.”
