NHRA Suspends 2020 season for 30 days

NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) has announced today that they will be temporarily suspending their season for 30 days. This announcement comes with the coronavirus outbreak and the CDC recommended eight-week ban for all events that are greater than 50 or more people. At this time, it will mean the DENSO Auto Parts NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at Las Vegas is postponed. That race will be rescheduled for a later date. Below is the official NHRA statement.

“At this time, we are suspending all NHRA drag racing for thirty days in response to the coronavirus pandemic. This suspension includes events at all NHRA-owned tracks and any NHRA-sanctioned events such as the NHRA Mello Yellow Drag Racing Series and the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. We intend at this time to resume the original schedule on April 17-19 in Houston, and continue thereafter, subject to developments in the interim. The spring Las Vegas event is postponed with new dates TBD. Please go to LVMS.com for information if you have purchased tickets for the postponed event.”

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely, to listen to experts, and to be transparent as to when we believe we will able to resume racing.

“We made this decision with heavy hearts as we see the effects this pandemic is having on the world, the country and our NHRA family. We believe this is the right decision since social distancing and reducing gatherings of people has been recommended as one of the most effective ways to protect everyone in the long run.”

“We are all in this complicated, uncertain and rapidly changing situation together, and we encourage everyone to look out for each other. Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones. We encourage you to consult www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/index.html for information and updates.”

“We look forward to the time when we all come together again in person to celebrate the most extreme sport on the planet. Though we will have to be physically apart we encourage you to stay connected with the community through NHRA.com, and all of our social channels, on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter. NHRA.TV and National DRAGSTER will continue to deliver drag racing content for you.”

  • Don Schumacher Racing aims for milestone in NHRA

Don Schumacher Racing aims for milestone in NHRA

One of the historic teams in NHRA drag racing, Don Schumacher Racing, is aiming high this weekend when NHRA competes at the Gatornationals. If all goes to plan, DSR could very well have 350 overall wins by the time Sunday evening rolls around and if that happens, the team will be one of the select few to reach that number.

It’s been a long time coming for Don Schumacher who started the race team back in 1998. His son, Tony, joined him in the very first race at the U.S. Nationals. From 1998 to present, DSR has notched 347 race victories in the NHRA. A couple of notables include Tony Schumacher grabbing win 100 in 2007 at the Pacific Raceways event, Antron Brown getting the 200th win at Gainesville seven years ago back in 2013, Tommy Johnson Jr. scoring win No. 299 and Brown accomplishing the feat of 300 wins in 2017 at Las Vegas for DSR.

Schumacher’s son, Tony, was able to grab 84 victories for the team. As the team approaches this historic achievement, whether it happens at the Gatornationals this weekend or later this year, team owner Don Schumacher says it’s something to be proud of.

“It’s truly an amazing accomplishment, and I’m in awe when I think about how far this team has come since opening our doors in 1998,” said Don Schumacher as he reflected on his team’s myriad of triumphs. “Of course, none of this would be possible without the driving force behind this team’s success, and that is the incredible group of people at DSR and DSM. ‘It takes a village,’ as they say. Everyone from the drivers to the crew chiefs and crew, the machine and fab shops, our entire front office, and hospitality staff; this whole operation of 130+ people, everyone contributes. And of course, a big thank you goes out to our partners; they keep us out there racing week after week, and we couldn’t accomplish any of this without them.”

This weekend race fans will see DSR field eight cars. Those drivers include Antron Brown, Leah Pruette in the Top Fuel class, Jack Beckman, Ron Capps, Matt Hagan and Tommy Johnson Jr. in the Funny Car Class while Mark Pawuk and Pruett will hope to grab wins with the Factory Stock Showdown.

Overall, DSR has 161 wins in the Top Fuel category with Tony Schumacher having 84 wins, Antron Brown with 43, Spencer Massey with 16, Leah Pruett with seven, Cory McClenathan with five, Shawn Langdon four, and Melanie Troxel having two wins for DSR. In the Funny Car category, legendary racer Ron Capps has 50 wins with the team, Matt Hagan 33, Jack Beckman 31, Whit Bazemore 13, Gary Scelzi 12, Tommy Johnson Jr 11, Johnny Gray seven and the team owner himself Don Schumacher has five wins.

As for the Pro Stock Motorcycle class, Angelle Sampey has 10 wins, Brown has six while Craig Treble and Chip Ellis have one each. In the Pro Stock division, Richie Stevens has two wins while Jeg Coughlin Jr. has one. Finally, Leah Pruette is the sole driver in the Factory Stock Series to have three wins.

Don Schumacher has five wins that came in 1970 when he defeated Leroy Goldstein at Indianapolis, 1971 when he won against Kelly Brown at the Springnationals, 1972 against Al Marshall at Grandnationals and Ed McCulloch at Englishtown. Schumacher’s final win came back in 1973 when he won against NHRA legend Kenny Bernstein at Pomona.

  • NHRA Champion Tanner Gray Looking for Another Big Ohio Win in ARCA Menards Series Sioux Choief PowerPEX 200 at Toledo Speedway

NHRA Champion Tanner Gray Looking for Another Big Ohio Win in ARCA Menards Series Sioux Choief PowerPEX 200 at Toledo Speedway

For most drivers rocketing up the stock car ladder system, their eventual goal is to reach the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Their dream is to race and win at Daytona and go on to become a champion to join the likes of Petty, Pearson, Yarborough, Gordon, Waltrip, Allison, Earnhardt and Johnson as legends of the sport. Most of them these days start when they’re young, sometimes as young as four years old, racing in quarter midgets, then go-karts, then perhaps a late model at their local short track before trying to land a ride in the ARCA Menards Series.

The ladder system has been in place for a couple of decades now, and several have taken advantage of it. The late Davey Allison, who was recently inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame, spent two full seasons in the ARCA Menards Series after starting his career on the dusty Alabama short tracks. An eight-time ARCA winner, he finished second in the ARCA points in 1984 before moving on to become NASCAR’s Cup Series rookie of the year in 1987. Davey would go on to win the Daytona 500 in 1992 and was part of an incredible six-way battle for the championship that season, eventually finishing third behind Alan Kulwicki and Bill Elliott.

Others have tried to follow Allison’s pathway to NASCAR stardom, including current drivers Justin Allgaier, Michael McDowell, Ty Dillon, and Chris Buescher. Allgaier, Dillon, and Buescher are former ARCA champions, while McDowell finished as high as second. Other current NASCAR drivers have raced in ARCA sporadically on their way up the ladder, but never competed for a championship, including three-time ARCA winner Kyle Busch, who is the 2015 Cup Series champion, and two-time ARCA winner Joey Logano, who won the Cup title in 2018.

Logano, who drives for Team Penske, credits the ARCA Menards Series for launching him into the national spotlight when he won at Rockingham in 2008.

“At the time I was running a lot of K&N Pro Series races and we didn’t get to run a lot of the big tracks,” Logano said. “ARCA was a great place to go to get experience on the bigger tracks. Pocono, when you go there for the first time, it’s so difficult and different. Having that experience there helped me as a driver quite a bit. It gives you the ability to learn. It’s a good learning tool to get you some experience until you get to the next step in Trucks or XFINITY.”

One driver looking to follow in Logano’s footsteps is Tanner Gray (No. 54 Gray’s Motorsports/Valvoline/Durst, Inc. Toyota). Like Logano, he comes to the ARCA Menards Series with some experience in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. In fact, he won for the first time in his career on May 3 at the four-tenths mile South Boston Speedway in Virginia. And like Logano, who had a championship background as a youth in Legends cars, Gray also has a championship under his belt.

But that’s where the similarities end.

Rather than racing around the tight quarter-mile infield oval at Charlotte Motor Speedway or other similar short tracks up and down the east coast like Logano did, Gray earned his racing championship at 200 miles per hour going in a straight line 1000 feet at a time. And he did it on one of drag racing’s most prestigious stages, the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock division.

Gray became the youngest national event winner in NHRA history when he won at Las Vegas 13 days before his eighteenth birthday in 2017. He backed that up with eight national event wins in 2018, including wins at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio and the famed U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, on his way to becoming NHRA’s youngest-ever champion.

It may seem to be an odd transition to make, but for Gray it’s natural.

“The transition has definitely been tough,” Gray said. “I’ve learned a ton since the start of the year, and I feel like I’m starting to see progress in myself. I think I’m continuing to get more and more comfortable with the DGR-Crosley guys and working with them. They have done an awesome job so far, and I couldn’t ask for a better group to work and learn with.”

Gray has already had success in the Buckeye state, winning in Norwalk last year. Norwalk is a little more than an hour’s drive from Toledo, where he will be racing on May 19 in the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200. Fresh off his first career oval track win, he’s coming to Toledo Speedway with some momentum on his side. Should he win, Gray would join a list of nineteen other drivers who have scored their first ARCA Menards Series win at Toledo, joining the likes of recent first-time winners Chris Buescher, Myatt Snider, and Todd Gilliland, all of whom now race in various national NASCAR series.

“I’m confident going into Toledo,” Gray. “I think it’s going to be a fun race. We’ve struggled a little bit this year on the ARCA side of things, but I feel like if I can do my job right, then we will be up front and have a shot to win. DGR-Crosley always brings fast race cars to the track so it should be good.”

Practice for the Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200 at Toledo Speedway is scheduled for 12:30 pm ET on Saturday, May 18, followed by General Tire Pole Qualifying at 4 pm ET. A 35-lap ARCA late model sportsman feature event will close Saturday’s activities at the track. The Sioux Chief PowerPEX 200 will go green shortly after 2 pm ET on Sunday, May 19. The race will be televised live on MAVTV. ARCA for Me members can access live timing & scoring, live track updates, and live user chat throughout all on-track sessions at ARCARacing.com. New users can register for free with a valid email address at ARCARacing.com/login. Tickets are available by calling the Toledo Speedway ticket office at (419) 727-1100. Discounted tickets are available at Northwest Ohio Menards locations for $15, a savings of $10 from the raceday ticket price.

  • NHRA Veteran Mike Green Joins Ford and Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing as Co-Crew Chief

NHRA Veteran Mike Green Joins Ford and Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing as Co-Crew Chief

Tasca Touts Truly Talented Tuners for 2019

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Dec. 17, 2018 – Ford Funny Car driver Bob Tasca III will enter the 2019 NHRA season with a brand-new chance at a championship, a brand-new racecar and now, a brand-new co-crew chief. Tasca has recruited drag racing veteran Mike Green to join Eric Lane as the brain trust behind the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing Ford Mustang Funny Car.

Green joins the team from Don Schumacher Racing, sporting over 30 years of experience in the industry, including having a hand in multiple championship-winning programs. His record as a crew chief speaks for itself: 50 wins (9 in Funny Car) and 36 poles.

Later into his lengthy tenure at DSR, Green oversaw performance and safety development for the entire team as Director of Racing Technology. Most notably, he brought the use of canopy-style cockpits to the Top Fuel class.

“I’m very excited to be joining this team on a quest for an NHRA Funny Car championship,” said Green. “It takes dedication and resources to compete at this level, and I believe these guys truly have what it takes. I’m looking forward to a great offseason of preparation before hitting the season with everything we’ve got.”

Alongside Ford, Tasca returned to fulltime NHRA Funny Car competition in 2018 with Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing. Despite being a brand-new squad, the team remained in contention for The Countdown for most of the season, narrowly missing out in the final regular season race. Now, with 2018 winding down, Tasca has turned his eyes towards the coming year.

The team is currently going through the process of mounting the brand new 2019 Mustang Funny Car body. On top of preparing the new car, Tasca and team are adjusting in other areas as well, including the move to bring Green aboard.

“I’ve never been more confident for a coming season than I am now,” said Tasca. “Adding Mike Green, with all of his championship experience, alongside Eric Lane, truly strengthens my brain trust.”

This past season was Lane’s first foray as a crew chief, and while he lived up to many expectations and surpassed even more, he looks forward to having a veteran to bounce ideas off of.

“We’re all about having Mike with us,” said Lane. “He brings tons and tons of experience, he’s won championships, he’s won a lot of races. Honestly, I rank Mike Green right up there with the likes of Jimmy Prock and Rahn Tobler as crew chiefs that a team really wants to have in their corner. You can bet that next season, we’ll come out swinging.”

The 2019 NHRA season begins with the Winternationals on February 7-10.

Chevrolet Seeks to Continue Hot Streak in Northern Ohio
Team Chevy drivers sit atop Funny Car, Pro Stock standings entering season’s midpoint

DETROIT (June 20, 2018) – Jeg Coughlin Jr.’s distinguished drag racing career is highlighted by 79 victories across seven classes, including 60 in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock, and six world championships.

The most recent win – June 17 at Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway – over four-time NHRA Pro Stock champion Greg Anderson (Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro SS) was the second in the past three races for the driver of the JEGS.com/Elite Performance Chevrolet Camaro SS. He also scored a Super Comp victory June 10 at Richmond (Va.) in Sportsman competition.

Coughlin’s recent success follows a four-year drought encompassing 74 Pro Stock races. Coughlin acknowledged that “there were some trying times,” but he didn’t lose his resolve or competitive spirit.

“When you’ve gone as long as we had without winning, you reach a point where you take whatever you can get,” said Coughlin, who this weekend will seek to pick up his first Wally at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. “Although we had our chances here and there, we never capitalized on them.

“For five or six races now, we’ve had a great race car and we know it. When you feel that confidence in every corner of your race car you know you have an opportunity to make a real impact. It’s put everyone at Elite on a party wagon, so to speak, but I’m just going to stay focused. However, I’m certainly enjoying this feeling because you can never take it for granted.”

The Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals is the midpoint of the 24-race NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season, and opportunities to accumulate points to qualify for the 10 positions in the Countdown to the Championship in each of the four professional categories are dwindling. Coughlin has vaulted from 11th in the Pro Stock standings at the outset of the current four-week stretch of racing to sixth with seven regular-season events left.

“Without question, since we’ve made some transitions within the (Elite Motorsports) team, we’ve been really fast — Erica (Enders) and I both. It feels great,” he said.

Anderson, who tied Warren Johnson for the most Pro Stock final rounds with 151, was runner-up for the second time this season. He’s the class points leader heading to the event in northern Ohio.

“The points lead is the silver lining in this deal. We’re all disappointed we haven’t won yet this year, but we’re a win waiting to happen, and I think everyone knows that,” said Anderson, who picked up his class-leading seventh No. 1 qualifier honor of the season and 100th of his career last week at Bristol. “It’s great to have a better average than everyone else and have the points lead, but we’re here to win.”

Courtney Force widened the gap as the Funny Car points leader to 201 points with a semifinal round appearance and her class-high seventh No. 1 qualifier honor in the Advance Auto Parts Chevrolet Camaro SS. All four of Force’s victories this season have been registered following qualifying No. 1. John Force Racing teammate Robert Hight (Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS), who holds the track Funny Car speed record, is third in the standings.

Drivers of the Chevrolet COPO Camaro have won two rounds of the School of Automotive Machinists and Technology (SAM Tech) NHRA Factory Stock Showdown. The fourth event in the seven-race series is this weekend. Sixteen entries will qualify for eliminations.

In the powerful COPO Camaro will be reigning Showdown champion David Barton of Robesonia, Pennsylvania; Peter Gasko Jr. of Monroe Township, New Jersey; Stephen Bell of Shreveport, Louisiana; L. Scott Libersher of Wilmington, Illinois; Waldemar Rodriguez of Sidra, Puerto Rico; Doug Hamp of York, Pennsylvania; Daniel Stevenson of Bolingbrook, Illinois; Jesse Alexandra of West Bend, Wisconsin; Bruno Massel Jr. of Elmhurst, Illinois; David Janac of Caldwell, Texas; Aaron Stanfield of Bossier City, Louisiana; Robert Falcone of Pleasant Valley, New York; Clay Arnett of Hartsville, Indiana; Daniel Condon of Wilmington, Illinois; Arthur Kohn of Richmond, Texas; Randy Taylor of Artesia, New Mexico; and Leonard Libersher of Wilmington, Illinois.

Reigning Stock Eliminator champion Justin Lamb of Henderson, Nevada, returns to competition in his Chevrolet COPO Camaro. Also entered in their COPO Camaros in the 65-car field are 2016 class champion Jeff Strickland of Red Bay, Alabama, a semifinalist at Bristol Dragway last week; Jeff Taylor of Sellersburg, Indiana; Bob Letellier of Biddeford, Maine; Jim Boburka of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania; Philip Lankford of Langhorne, Pennsylvania; Dan Fletcher of Churchville, New York; James Reed of Lincoln, Illinois; Tim Lowe of Macy, Indiana; and Ronald Traupman Jr. of Baden, Pennsylvania.

Letellier also will drive a COPO Camaro in Super Stock this weekend. Jeffery Myers of Decatur, Indiana, is also entered in his COPO Camaro.

FS1 will telecast taped qualifications live at 1:30 p.m. ET June 23 and will telecast taped eliminations and finals at 6:30 p.m. ET June 24.

    CHEVY RACING ENGINEERING OUTLOOK
ROGER ALLEN, CHEVY RACING NHRA PROGRAM MANAGER: “The Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals marks the fourth of four consecutive weekends of racing. Chevy Racing teams and drivers have displayed remarkable resolve through variable weather and track conditions in this stretch and have distinguished themselves with continued success. We’re looking forward to this event that is the halfway point of the season and the 12th of the 18 regular-season races before the Countdown to the Championship. In addition to Team Chevy entries in Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock, the Chevy COPO Camaro will be well represented in the SAM Tech Factory Stock Showdown, in Super Stock, and Stock Eliminator competition.”

BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, ADVANCE AUTO PARTS MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (reigning class champion; No. 2 qualifier and winner at Houston; No. 1 qualifier at Charlotte): “I always try to stay positive and upbeat about everything. What I’ve learned, especially from last year, is to take this run and learn from it. It’ll make me a better driver. So, we’ll go on to Norwalk and hopefully improve from there.”

    FUNNY CAR:
COURTNEY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, ADVANCE AUTO PARTS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (Seven-time No. 1 qualifier and winner at Phoenix, Atlanta, Topeka and Richmond; semifinalist at Bristol; class points leader): “Brian Corradi and Dan Hood tuned this car and got us some rounds (at Bristol) and helped us stay in that points lead. It was still a good day for us. We’ve learned a lot this weekend and we’re going to be ready to head to Norwalk, Ohio, and another hot track.”

ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTO CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (reigning class champion; won at Chicago and three-time runner-up; runner-up and set track Funny Car speed record in 2017; third in points): “It was a tough weekend (at Bristol). Between the heat and the bumps (in the track surface), it was a real challenge not just for the crew chiefs, but for the drivers and crew, the fans, everybody. At Norwalk, we’re going to go back to what worked for us in 2017.”

JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, PEAK COOLANT & MOTOR OIL CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (has 1,296 round wins and 148 class victories; ninth in points): “We’ve still got a lot to learn. We’re just going to go on and run in Norwalk and then test of Monday. Still trying to learn.”

    PRO STOCK:
GREG ANDERSON, KB RACING, SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 1 qualifier seven times this season and scored 100th of career at Bristol; class points leader; three-time winner at track): “We’ve been building all year for this race because it’s the big one for us. We’re proud to have Summit Racing on the door, and there isn’t anything we’d love more than to put a Summit Racing Chevy Camaro in the winner’s circle this weekend. We have worked hard to have our best product so that we can do that. It would mean everything to us to hand a trophy to the folks from Summit Racing on Sunday at their home track in their 50th anniversary year. It doesn’t get much better, so that’s the goal, and we know we can achieve it. It’s just a matter of executing.”

TANNER GRAY, GRAY MOTORSPORTS, VALVOLINE GRAY MOTORSPORTS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (won at Gainesville and Richmond; runner-up at Atlanta; second in points): “We had a positive weekend at Bristol with qualifying fourth and getting to the semifinals. Of course, you always want to win but we’ll take the points and move on to Norwalk. I understand that they recently have repaved the racetrack, so we’ll take the data we got from Virginia – another smooth track – and see what we can do at Norwalk.”

VINCENT NOBILE, MOUNTAIN VIEW RACING, MOUNTAIN VIEW TIRE CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (two-time winner and runner-up at Charlotte four-wide; two-time winner at track; third in points): “We just have to focus on qualifying better so you have lane choice. We changed a bunch on the car coming to Bristol because of the track so we’ll go back to what we raced and go from there. Supposedly, that track surface is going to be as smooth as Virginia because they redid it so we could basically go back to our Virginia notes and go from there.”

ERICA ENDERS, ELITE MOTORSPORTS, MELLING PERFORMANC/ELITE MOTORSPORTS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (holds track ET and speed records, set in 2014; winner at Charlotte four-wide and three-time runner-up; fourth in points): “): “I feel like we’re performing a lot better. Where we’re struggling is we’re missing the best qualifying session. We’re screwing up when it’s the best session and getting behind the eight ball, qualifying on the bottom half of the ladder. We don’t quit when the going gets tough. I’m optimistic and am looking forward to what’s to come.”

BO BUTNER, KB RACING, JIM BUTNER AUTO GROUP CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (reigning class champion; earned sixth Pro Stock win and second in a row at Auto Club Raceway in season opener; runner-up at Gainesville; won at track in 2017): “I felt very fortunate to win Norwalk last year, and it is really an honor to have Summit Racing as an associate sponsor on my car this year. They’re not just a good company – they’re a great company. They step up big for this team and for NHRA. They do a lot for the Sportsman racers and for the junior drag racers, and I think that’s great. As for my car, any weekend could be a turnaround race. I’m very much looking forward to this weekend because they just redid the racing surface at Summit Motorsports Park, and my Chevy Camaro has been very good on new tracks this year. I hear the surface there in Norwalk is great, and the Bader family, they’re first class. It should be a great weekend for us.”

JASON LINE, KB RACING, SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (runner-up in first two races of season; seeking 50th national event win – 47 in Pro Stock, two in Stock Eliminator): “I’ve been excited to get to the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals all year. This is a race we always look forward to, but this year it’s even more special for me because I have an opportunity to reach a pretty significant milestone. To get the 50th win of my career at Summit Motorsports Park during the 50th anniversary of Summit Racing Equipment would be something I would never forget. I’m super motivated to make that happen at Summit’s home race. We really want to do something good for them to thank them for all they’ve done for us through the years. This is a tough game; it certainly isn’t easy to win, but that’s what makes it special when you do – that would be especially true this weekend.”

JEG COUGHLIN JR., ELITE MOTORSPORTS, JEGS.COM/ELITE PERFORMANCE CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (two-time winner; No. 2 qualifier at Bristol; family business located in Delaware, Ohio): “We’re seeing temperatures in the 70s and 80s, which will be a refreshing change after some really hot weekends. It’ll be great to race in front of a home state crowd that will certainly be giving us some extra energy, and we have a full complement of family racing with us, which we love. On top of it all, my good luck charm from the last few races, Jeg Sr., will be with us so we’re excited.”

DREW SKILLMAN, RAY SKILLMAN MOTORSPORTS, RAY SKILLMAN AUTO GROUP CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 1 qualifier at Charlotte four-wide; five-time semifinalist; earned 100th round win at Richmond; fifth in points): “We saw some marked improvement in the car this past weekend at Bristol by qualifying third and advancing to the semifinals against Jeg (Coughlin Jr.). Unfortunately, I didn’t hit the tree right and red-lighted, so that was disappointing. We had the car to win. We’ll close out this stretch in the season in Norwalk with optimism.”

ALEX LAUGHLIN, GAS MONKEY RACING, FITZGERALD USA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (will be competing in 55th career race; No. 5 qualifier at Bristol): “I’m confident we’ll have a good car again. Mark Ingersoll, my crew chief, is great and does really well on hot tracks. I have the confidence there, so we’ll see how qualifying goes. I just need one good qualifying round to reset and rebuild from there.”

CHRIS MCGAHA, HARLOW SAMMONS RACING, HARLOW SAMMONS OF ODESSA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (winner at Phoenix; three-time semifinalist; has 97 round wins; seventh in points): “I’m excited for Norwalk because I heard they’ve repaved it. We’ve been running good and will head to that track and see what we can do.”

JOHN GAYDOSH JR., GAYDOSH RACING, PYPES PERFORMANCE CHEVROLET CAMARO SS: “The Pypes Performance Camaro is running good. We’re working on the suspension, trying to get the chassis a little better so it travels a little easier. We’ll see if we can go a couple rounds at Norwalk.”

An interview with Pro Stock winner ERICA ENDERS, ELITE MOTORSPORTS, MELLING PERFORMANCVE/ELITE MOTORSPORTS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 8 qualifier; 23rd career Pro Stock victory; last win was Epping, New Hampshire, in June 2017; competing in 252nd Pro Stock race; won with 6.535-second run with .014-second light; posted low ET of event at 6.500 seconds; sixth different Chevrolet Pro Stock winner in six races):

WHY IS THIS ONE SO MEANINGFUL TO YOU, ERICA?
“It’s been since Epping of last year and I think prior to that it was two years before that. So, they have been few and far between and its been a hard mountain to climb. It goes to show that hard work pays off and strong people survive. That is what I have here is a really strong core group of people. Rick and Ricky Jones. Richard Freeman organized the most perfect group of people. I am so stoked. Mello Yello, thank you so much for supporting our sport. Thank you to Melling, we thank you so much.”

WHAT WAS THE PRESSURE LIKE KNOWING YOU HAD THE FASTEST RACE CAR IN THE EARLY ROUNDS?
“I like that kind of pressure. I enjoy when the weight is on my shoulders. Knowing we have a fast car was great. It’s the first time we’ve had a fast, consistent race car in a long time. It was crucial, but I didn’t have time to think about the finals because everything was rushed. I had two of my crew guys in the car with me trying to move weight. I’m trying to block them out so I can get my head game right for the final round. I barely got to catch my breath before I fired up the car for the final round. The pressure is significant, but I think I thrive under it.”

    TOP FUEL:
BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET DRAGSTER (No. 1 qualifier; fell in first round): “It’s definitely tough. My team is convinced that the No. 1 qualifier is never good luck, it’s a curse just because there’s all that added pressure that follows it. We struggled. It’s tough out here at four-wide and conditions changed every single day so that’s a lot on my crew chiefs and the entire team. Unfortunately, we went out in the first round. But the good thing is we pack up and go to the next one in Atlanta.”

    FUNNY CAR:
JOHN FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, PEAK COOLANT & MOTOR OIL CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 8 qualifier; runner-up): “When you go through what we’ve gone through and then not qualify last week, it really hurts. The race car is starting to come back. We don’t even have a tune-up in it yet because it’s dropping cylinders every run, but it ain’t blowing up. We still ain’t figured out why it’s blowing up. It’s just too much mentally on you. I’m shell-shocked, too. The good thing is I’m starting to feel physically well. I want to thank our sponsors. I’ve got one in a row. It ain’t over yet.”

COURTNEY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, ADVANCE AUTO PARTS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 1 qualifier; finished fourth in final quad): “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to get lane choice and I’m a little frustrated because I feel that’s part my fault. I should have kept the car straighter in the semis, and if I could have kept it straighter and not out of that groove to the left I would have been able to hold onto it instead of coasting for that win in the semis. And who knows what we could have run and maybe we could have gotten lane choice and been in a better lane for the final round to put us in a better position. It’s unfortunate that we weren’t in the best lane, and it was a little bold up there and caused us to strike the tires. I just had to pedal it from there and kind of hope for the best. Job well done by my team. I’m really proud of them. They gave me a fast hotrod every single round that I went out there, and to be able to do that at the home track for Advance Auto Parts really meant a lot.”

ROBERT HIGHT, JOHN FORCE RACING, AUTO CLUB OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 7 qualifier; fell in second round): “This was a tricky race track all weekend. We got the win in the first round today but I had to pedal it. It was close at the finish line but the name of the game at four-wide is win and advance. We didn’t get lane choice which was unfortunate. We had the third pick in the second round and we just couldn’t get down that lane under power. This Auto Club team is holding their heads up. We are getting ready for Atlanta and putting this race behind us. The fans love the four-wide format and now we will finish the season out with traditional side by side racing. I was very happy to see John get a runner-up finish for the PEAK Chevrolet team. All our race cars are starting to get stronger and that will help all our teams.”

    PRO STOCK:
VINCENT NOBILE, MOUNTAIN VIEW RACING, MOUNTAIN VIEW TIRE CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 3 qualifier; runner-up): “I could have been the Four-Wide King (won four-wide at Las Vegas). We definitely have one of the cars to beat. I take full blame for this one. I went in there with a plan and that plan went sour. An .095 (light) ain’t going to cut it in any round, especially in the final when you’re against the three best cars in the four-wide series.”

DREW SKILLMAN, RAY SKILLMAN MOTORSPORTS, RAY SKILLMAN AUTO GROUP CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 1 qualifier; finished fourth in final): “We’re going in the right direction. I let the team down on the lights all weekend. We didn’t win a round, but fortunately in this circus they’re running here you can come in second and go to the next round. We’ll test (April 30) and work harder. I’m going to figure out what I have to do to hit the tree a little bit better.”

CHRIS MCGAHA, HARLOW SAMMONS RACING, HARLOW SAMMONS OF ODESSA CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 10 qualifier; finished third in final): “I like the four-wide. I guess it’s because I go up there and don’t play games. The weekend was good. We didn’t have the strong performance that we did the other races this year, but we were right there. I’m not disappointed.”

GREG ANDERSON, KB RACING, SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 2 qualifier; fell in first round): “We just didn’t run fast enough, plain and simple. We were way too conservative. We’ve gotten bit the last three races by being too aggressive on Sunday, and we didn’t want to repeat that. The problem is we went too far the other way. There are too many fast cars for us to be that conservative. We lost a tight one by less than a thousandth, but it doesn’t really matter. Might as well have been a mile.”

BO BUTNER, JIM BUTNER AUTO, JIM BUTNER AUTO GROUP CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 4 qualifier; fell in second round): “It’s not easy. We were behind the eight ball, behind this track all weekend. We have some work to do. We definitely have good power. That’s not the issue. We just have to make better runs.”

DERIC KRAMER, KRAMER RACING, AMERICAN ETHANOL CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 5 qualifier; fell in first round when tripped red light): “We needed to make a good run and went out there ready to do that but the car got a little out of shape in third gear and had to click it off. I didn’t even know I red-lighted until we got down there. We’ll work on it and I’ll adjust the linkage a little and go from there. (About first full season) We’re doing just fine. Right about where I thought we’d be. We’ve had a couple of really good races and a couple that have not been so good but that’s just how Pro Stock is. It’s tough out there and no one; or at least very few people can do well at every race. So far, this deal (with KB Racing) has been everything we thought it would be and more. My driving has also been decent and we’ve made some good tuning calls.”

TANNER GRAY, GRAY MOTORSPORTS, VALVOLINE CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 7 qualifier; fell in second round): “This was not the outcome the team and I wanted to have this weekend. My guys did a really good job with the car I just didn’t do my job to the best of my abilities, which is frustrating. We’re gonna do some testing next week so that we can get some more laps under our belt before Atlanta and hopefully come out swinging.”

JASON LINE, KB RACING, SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 9 qualifier; fell in first round): “The engine tuner did a bad job, and the driver did a bad job. But such is life. We’ll be better at Atlanta, and we’re hopefully going to bring the blue Summit Racing Chevy Camaro back out there. Some days are good, some days are not so good. Next week we’ll be looking for more of those good days.”

MATT HARTFORD, HARTFORD RACING, TOTAL SEAL/NITROFISH CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 11 qualifier; fell in first round): “We had a really dominant car last weekend and we had a very similar set-up in qualifying at Charlotte. Unfortunately, first round the car just went immediately left, we got out of the groove and it shook. (About competing in more races) I’d like go to all of them but funding being what it is we have to pick and choose. Thankfully, Total Seal allows me to travel and Kenny (Koretsky) is great about letting me use his car and helping me out. Otherwise, I couldn’t do this at all. We have the power to compete with anyone out here. The big thing is that I can now say that I’ve won a Pro Stock race (at Houston). I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to come out here and run as much as we have and put as much effort into this as we have and never get to win even one. That win was a big relief.”

ALEX LAUGHLIN, GAS MONKEY RACING, TIGE BOATS CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 12 qualifier; fell in second round when tripped red light): “We really struggled through Q1, 2 and 3. We had a few bumps here and there. Looking at our data, it all looks right. We just can’t figure out what’s going on, so we’re kind of in a slump right now. It’s not one big thing; it’s just a bunch of little things that have cost us. Basically, dumb problems. Hopefully, we’ve put all the stupid stuff behind us.”

JOHN GAYDOSH, GAYDOSH PERFORMANCE, PYPES PERFORMANCE CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 13 qualifier; fell in first round; nephew Kurt Benkert, QB from University of Virginia, signed free-agent contract Saturday with Atlanta Falcons): “I’m really happy for him. Atlanta had their eye on him. He broke all of Kurt Warner’s records at the school. (About the race weekend) I like racing the four-wide. I had a few mechanical issues here and there. I’m running an older set of tires, and we don’t know if it was the older tires or something else in that run. I left good – a .007 light – but then the car got loose and I couldn’t bring it back. I had to bail and I’m not wading up the car. Chris and Lester (McGaha) are awesome to work with. I have good power and can come out here and go rounds. We just have to get the package together.”

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 18, 2018) – Tanner Gray added to the family’s Wally collection from Gainesville Raceway with a Pro Stock victory in the 49th Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway.

Gray, competing in his 27th National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event, claimed his sixth win in the Valvoline Gray Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro SS. The 18-year-old from Mooresville, North Carolina, defeated reigning NHRA Pro Stock champion Bo Butner in the final with a pass of 6.588 seconds at 210.18 mph.

Gray’s father, Shane, won the Gatornationals’ Pro Stock class in 2017 in his Chevrolet Camaro SS. His grandfather, Johnny, earned the Funny Car title in 2013.

“It’s definitely pretty cool to win at the same places they have,” said Gray, the No. 11 qualifier who registered his 50th elimination round win in the final. “We’ve been struggling with this car, but I think it’s finally coming around. The crew gave me a solid race car all day long and gave me the opportunity to be consistent and go out there and get round wins.”

Robert Hight, the No. 3 Funny Car qualifier who set the top speed of the event at 233.66 mph in qualifications, also produced the low elapsed time at 3.894 seconds in the Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS in the first round of eliminations. Hight, a three-time winner of the Gatornationals, lost in the second round. An under-the-hood explosion about three-fourths of the way through the pass blow the body off the race car. Hight, the reigning NHRA Funny Car champion, was uninjured.

“We have a lot of work to do before Vegas,” Hight said. “We have a lot of things to figure out but we have the best people over here. We’ll get to the bottom of it.”

John Force Racing teammate Courtney Force, the No. 2 qualifier in the Advance Auto Parts Chevrolet Camaro SS, defeated No. 15 qualifier John Force (PEAK Coolant & Motor Oil Chevrolet Camaro SS) in the first round. She lost in the quarterfinals.

Brittany Force, the No. 13 qualifier in the Monster Energy Chevrolet dragster, fell in the first round of Top Fuel eliminations. Force, the reigning NHRA Top Fuel champion, earned her first victory in the class in 2016 at Gainesville Raceway.

Gray, who recorded his first pro victory at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway – the next stop on the NHRA campaign – in 2017. Butner, the No. 5 qualifier, won the season opener at Pomona, California.

Gray defeated Vincent Nobile (Mountain View Tire Chevrolet Camaro SS) in one semifinal, while Butner ousted Drew Skillman (Bill Skillman Auto Group Chevrolet Camaro SS) in the other.

Val Smeland (DVS Racing Chevrolet Camaro SS) earned his first Pro Stock round victory in 24 races. He fell in the quarterfinals to Nobile. Other first-round winners included No. 1 qualifier Greg Anderson (Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro SS) and No. 3 qualifier and Phoenix winner Chris McGaha (Harlow Sammons of Odessa Chevrolet Camaro SS).

Chevrolet COPO Camaros comprised the semifinals of the School of Automotive Machinists & Technology (SAM Tech) NHRA Factory Stock Showdown. Stephen Bell of Shreveport, Louisiana, defeated Leonard Libersher of Wilmington, Illinois, in one semifinal. Aaron Stanfield of Bossier City, Louisiana, defeated Randy Taylor of Artesia, New Mexico, on a holeshot in the other semifinal.

Bell’s 8.176-second pass at 167.47 mph drove to the victory over his teammate in the first race of the seven-event series.

“The class is just so much fun and competitive. At St. Louis (last year) when we wrecked this car, I didn’t want to end it that way. So we worked all winter to bring the car back and now here we are. To have both of my cars in the final was just super.”

David Barton of Robesonia, Pennsylvania, driving a Gary Wolkwitz-owned Chevrolet COPO Camaro, was the No. 1 qualifier. Barton won the Gainesville event in 2017 on the way to earning the series title.

Jeff Taylor of Sellersburg, Indiana, raced to the Stock Eliminator win in his Chevrolet COPO Camaro. Scott Libersher of Wilmington, Illinois, reached the semifinals in his COPO Camaro.

“The car was really good, we got a few breaks along the way and I had a lot of good help,” Taylor said. “My wife was my crew chief this weekend, so I think she’ll stay employed.”

Brandon Bakies, of Alexandria, Louisiana, the No. 14 qualifier in the 59-car Super Stock field, reached the quarterfinals.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season continues April 6-8 with the DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. FS1 will telecast qualifications live at 7 p.m. ET April 6 and taped eliminations at 6 p.m. ET April 8.

ROGER ALLEN, CHEVY RACING NHRA PROGRAM MANAGER: “It was another exciting race weekend at the 49th Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals, with Chevrolet teams and drivers securing wins in Pro Stock, the SAM Tech NHRA Factory Stock Showdown, and Stock Eliminator along with a runner-up finish in Stock Eliminator. Courtney Force followed up her No. 1 qualifier honor and Funny Car victory at Phoenix with a No. 2 qualifier spot, and John Force Racing teammate Robert Hight was the No. 3 qualifier in Funny Car and posted the top speed of the event in the class. After a week to regroup, test and rest, the first DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals are on deck for The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.”

An interview with Pro Stock winner TANNER GRAY, GRAY MOTORSPORTS, VALVOLINE CHEVROLET CAMARO SS (No. 11 qualifier; earned sixth Pro Stock victory in 27th pro race; picked up 50th round victory; father and grandfather also have won the Gatornationals):

AT THE END OF QUALIFYING, WERE YOU THINKING NOBODY CAN TOUCH MY CAR?
“I was actually thinking about how the traffic would be about 1 ‘o clock to go home. We’ve been struggling pretty bad with this car. (Crew chief) Dave (Connolly) has been beating his head against the wall trying to figure it out. It seems like it’s finally coming around. My grandpa came in yesterday and said you have four rounds to get this car right or we’re going to park it and bring out the back-up car. I really like this car and was hoping it would get going and it did. The crew gave me a solid race car all day long and gave me the opportunity to be consistent and go out there and get round wins.”

EVERYBODY IN ROUND ONE WAS SLOWING DOWN BECAUSE OF CONDITIONS BUT YOU EQUALED YOUR QUALIFYING PACE. DID YOU FIGURE SOMETHING OUT?
“I didn’t figure anything out; it was my crew. They did an awesome job with the car. We let it get away from us in the semifinals against Vincent (Nobile) and got a little lucky. We just regrouped for the final and had a good run. I’m just thankful to be up here.”

IS IT EXTRA SPECIAL BECAUSE YOUR GRANDPA AND FATHER HAVE WON HERE?
“It’s something that’s really cool. My little brother was racing Late Models yesterday, so my dad stayed and watched his first race. It’s definitely pretty cool to win at the same places they have.”

YOU TESTED AT BRADENTON UNDER VERY DIFFERENT (WEATHER) CONDITIONS. DID ANYTHING TRANSLATE TO HERE?
“In my opinion, no. We run 6.49 out there at 213 and come here first round and blow the tires off. It was a waste of three days right there. That’s the frustrating part. Dave (Connolly) knows what it takes; he’s been in my seat. He gave me a good car today to get down the racetrack. It might not have been the fastest, but it was right there.”

YOU’VE BEEN WILLING TO SHOW YOUR EMOTIONS POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE. DO YOU THINK THAT’S CATCHING ON (WITH FANS)?
“It’s just me. Whether I’m mad or happy, since I was little my parents have told me you have to learn how to lose. I’m a perfectionist and I’m always trying to better myself. It’s what I expect out of myself and when I don’t meet those standards … I’m definitely trying to work on it. This year I’ve tried to stay more in the middle. I’m just an emotional guy.”
