    Why I watched

ARCA’s offering promised to showcase 19-year old Darrell Wallace Jr, who has a lot of folks gushing but I had yet to lay eyes on him. Seemed a good enough reason as any to watch some stock cars at the big track to open the new season. Other tidbits included a 78-year old James Hylton beginning his 50th and final season, Bobby Gerhart was seeking his 9th win in this race, while Frank Kimmel sought his 77th career win but his first at Daytona. Still, the very fact they were running stock cars at Daytona to break the two month hiatus seemed a good enough reason to me.

    The race…

Daytona is one of those tracks that just lends itself to stimulating visuals, with those high banks and close formation racing. Even when it lacks drama, it still is cool to watch.

We had the unexpected in the late going. It appeared Bobby Gerhart was cruising to a win comfortably up front, but that changed with six laps to go. Earlier, from the broadcast booth, Kyle Busch observed that Gerhart might have bolted from pit row before getting a full tank and he proved prophetic when the 8-time race winner coughed and sputtered with six laps remaining to wind up parked and 28th.

We had some drama, when we saw Darrell Wallace Jr race for all of 19 laps. Too bad about the folks checking in front of him, which caused him to bump Justin Boston. When Boston’s car swerved right back to return the favor, Wallace was out of the race. At least he gets to return to run in the NASCAR truck series on Friday.

Frenchman Julien Jousse was blowing water from the start, did not get it cooled on the track and did not pit so it came as no surprise to see him blow up after ten laps. If the goal was to blow engine parts everywhere and go up in flames, they succeeded brilliantly.

On the downside, those two early cautions brought us lots of caution laps, some delay in getting the field back in order, and a lot of commercials to watch. As I watch the race between 30 minutes and an hour behind live time so I can analyze the race as I go, the PVR is my friend. If you were watching it live, it had to be painful.

Of note, the first lap was led by a woman. Milka Duno was there on the first lap, but the 40-year old Venezuelan filtered back as things progressed to wind up 29th at the end of 80 laps.

Frank Kimmel led the second pack, well behind the leaders, to finish fourth. James Hylton, who began his career as a mechanic for Rex White when he won the Cup title back in 1960, was 25th.

In the end, it came down to 23-year old Georgian John Wes Townley trying to stave off 20-year old Nationwide rookie Kyle Larson for the win. Thanks to a trio of lapped cars on the final lap we did not get to see any last moment drama at the finish line.

    Rating this race (7/10)

The fact I did not feel compelled to fast forward through the action must mean something. It might have been the main thing, but also the unexpected element that kept Gerhart from walking away with the win in the end rewarded me for watching.

For 30 years, Venturini Motorsports has been a fixture in the ARCA Racing Series. However, one thing has alluded them – winning at Daytona International Speedway. That all changed in their 31st year at Daytona as John Wes Townley took the victory in the Lucas Oil 150.

“This is just a great day for Venturini  Motorsports,” Townley said. “This is priceless. I almost wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. It’s a real honor.”

It also marks the first career victory for Townley.

“I’m exastic,” Townley said in victory lane. “I have no words to say.I just got to thank Zaxby’s and Venturini Motorsports for this opportunity. It’s one thing to win your first race in ARCA, it’s another to win at Daytona.”

Townley was in second place with seven laps to go while Bobby Gerhart led. However, as the field came off turn four, Gerhart slowed immediately, moving to the inside which allowed Townley to get by.

“I don’t know what happened,” Townley said of Gerhart. “At some point, he got out of the throttle.”

Gerhart would stall on the inside of the track a lap later, out of gas. There’d be no caution due to his Chevrolet being out of the way. Townley then held off rookie Kyle Larson to take the checkered flag.

“Well, as far as I know, we just had luck on our side,” Townley said. “At a place like this, that’s just what you need. You just need to bide your time and not do anything stupid.”

Townley had taken a break from racing due to having a season of multiple wrecks in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, however returned to tackle the ARCA schedule this year with Venturini Motorsports.

“Realized at some point, when you quit something you never get any better,” he said. “So I decided to come back out here.”

Venturini Motorsports car owner Billy Venturini says the win is the most meaningful in his family’s entire racing career.

“This is the first time I cried in victory lane,” he said. “This was definitely the highlight of our entire racing career. I think we’ve won at just about every other track we go to except here.”

Meanwhile, young Kyle Larson would finish the race second on the road to getting ready to run the Nationwide Series opener next weekend.

“It wasn’t a bad race,” Larson said. “I had a good time and I’m really looking forward to the NASCAR Nationwide Series race next weekend.”

Larson had tried planning a move with other drivers, but it just wasn’t there.

“The race went pretty smooth,” he said. “But, I couldn’t really make any moves. I was wide open. We’ll take second.”

Coulter Motorsports driver Ricky Ehrgott finished third, followed by Frank Kimmel and Sean Corr. Brennan Newberry finished sixth, followed by Mason Mingus, Mark Thompson, Matt Kurzejewski and Chad Boat.

The 150 mile race saw three cautions, including a big wreck involving eight drivers. On lap 20, Darrell Wallace Jr. would get into the back of of his Venturini Motorsports teammate Justin Boston, causing to go sideways, collecting Steve Kemp, Brett Hudson, Drew Charlson, Mason Mitchell, Caleb Armstrong and Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell.

“I don’t know what to say,” Wallace Jr. said. “I just ran into the back of him. Just disappointing.”

“It’s definitely a tough deal to come down and race and end up with a torn racecar,” Boston said. “It sucks that we have two torn up cars. It’s just disappointing.”

The first caution came out on lap 10 for Julien Jousse blowing a motor while the third caution came out on lap 27 for debris after Will Kimmel blew a motor.

Milka Duno, who started second in her Venturini Motorsports Toyota, led the race early on till the first pit stop at lap 18. She would have transmission problems on lap 27, causing her to go behind the wall for five laps.

Another driver with bad luck was Chris Buescher as he went behind the wall for six laps due to electrical issues.

  • OSCAAR Modified Rookie Davey Terry looks for success in 2013

OSCAAR Modified Rookie Davey Terry looks for success in 2013

DaveyTerry_YounggunPanelWhen Davey Terry started the season with the OSCAAR Modifieds, there were a lot of questions of how the rookie would do.

“We were real late getting into the modified deal,” Davey Terry said. “My dad came up with the idea real late to get a car, with pretty much a month left. It was kind of a mad thrash to get the car done. Started the season with no practice on the car, no laps at all. We didn’t have any goals when the season started. We set goals as the season went on.”

By the end of the season, Terry answered the skeptics as he took home the OSCAAR Modified Rookie of the Year Award while finishing third in points.

For the Erin, Ontario native, he says the turning point to his season was the top five finish at Varney Motor Speedway mid-season.

“It wasn’t a track that I thought I’d do really well at because I never really did well there in a mini stock,” Terry said during the 2013 Canadian Motorsports Expo. “With a little guidance from guys like Gary McLean and Brent McLean had a huge impact on me.”

Terry picked up many lessons through the season and one of the important lessons was patience.

“Just make sure you take care of your equipment and everything else falls into place,” he said.

In learning those lessons, there were driver that Terry went to for advice.

Anyone who’s last name is McLean,” Terry said. “They’ve been racing modifieds forever. It’s such a great group of guys. You can almost go to anyone and get some advice. Everybody will help each other out.”

DaveyTerry_velocityWhile it marked the first year for Terry in the Modified ranks, it was also the first ever season for the Modifieds under the OSCAAR banner, touring around Ontario.

“I think it exceeded expectations,” he said. “I think it was neat to see all of the drivers come out of the wood works.”

Terry also sees growth for the 2013 season, noting the number of drivers that have contacted series director Dave Gainforth looking to how to buy a car to get started.

“It’s just good news for OSCAAR in general,” Terry added. “The cars, they look cool and everyone wants to drive one now so it’s good news for everybody.”

One thing that Terry would like to see maybe is one race have a time trials worked in deciding the starting line-up rather than double heats.

“Well, some fans don’t like time trials – they like heat races,” Terry started. “So what I’d like to see is time trials and then 1 set of heats so fans can have the best of both worlds. I’d like to see time trials for the added challenge.”

With the success in 2012, there’s one thing that the sophomore driver wants to accomplish in 2013 – winning his first modified race. That win may come early in the season after he ended the season with a second in Sunset’s Velocity 250 and a fifth at Autumn Colors.

  • Bobby Grewohl announces three-year sponsorship deal with 989 On-Demand

Bobby Grewohl announces three-year sponsorship deal with 989 On-Demand

2013.01.21 H2M Beverages ShootEarlier this year, NASCAR K&N West Series Competitor Bobby Grewohl announced a new sponsorship deal with the H2M Beverage Company to represent their 989 On-Demand product.

“I really feel very honored and lucky to be involved with the H2M Beverage family and represent their company and products,” Grewohl said in an interview. “The owners are very genuine and caring people and I feel very privileged to be part of their team.”

“This partnership works for us on multiple levels,” said Greg Piagesi, co-founder of H2M and SVP, Sales. “Over the three-year term, it offers us nearly 19,000 sku slots nationwide, significantly increasing our distribution. And as title sponsor of Bobby’s racing team, the design of the car, hauler, team fire suit, and helmet can offer our retail partners great exposure to NASCAR’s loyal fan base.”

989 On-Demand is a drink that is designed to replenish and rehydrate you with all-natural ingredients.

“989 On-Demand is a great product and it does what it is advertised to do,” Grewohl added. “I like the product very much and honestly recommend it to everyone.  It is 100% natural and zero calories, which makes it a perfect fit for my current training regimen.”

The product fits well with Grewohl as he says NASCAR drivers are just like any athletes out there.

“The conditions in the car are really intense with temperatures that can reach 140 degrees, high g-forces and high speed for a long time,” he said. “You have to train for this like any other athlete trains for their sport.  If you do not properly train you will not have chance at being successful.”

Grewohl says he trains because when he was younger, he lost a race due to not having the strength and energy to finish it. It’s also good to train and work out because it can help on the mechanical side in setting up the car.

“The race car is relatively light weight,” Grewohl explained. “Having a driver that is in good shape and not over weight is also good as it will allow more opportunities for distribution of weight in the race car which gives the engineer more options for balancing or setting up the car.”

Grewohl works closely with his trainer Al Tortorelli to always take his workouts a step further. Some highlights of the current workout include spending three hours training each day including 40 minutes in a sauna, a heavy core workout (abs, back), running, cycling and lifting weights.

“He has me doing a 40 to 60 minute workout in a sauna to simulate the conditions in the race car,” he said. “I do not do this without a doctor’s supervision. I want to be able to perform at a consistent level under extreme conditions so it is important that I have the support, right tools and products to help me stay healthy and replenish what I’m losing during my training and racing.”

The drink 989 On-Demand works perfectly with keeping fit and being ready as it helps replenish electrolytes that are lost when we sweat. For NASCAR drivers, they lose an average 10 to 12 pounds in weight per race alone due to sweat alone.

“The body loses more than just water when we sweat,” Nutritionist Dr. Tricia Psota said. “Valuable electrolytes are eliminated through sweat as well. Where vitamins and minerals pass through the bloodstream and urine, electrolytes are eliminated through sweat.”

To go with the sponsorship deal, Grewohl will run a car numbered “9”89, which makes it the first three digit car in NASCAR history.  They will ghost the 9, but it will be visible at all times.

Along with running the K&N West Series, Grewohl will make his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut later this season at Iowa Speedway for Joe Nemechek and NEMCO Racing.

“I am really excited and looking forward to the track and race,” he said. “I am also thankful and honored to be driving for and representing Joe Nemechek and NEMCO Racing.  I will be focusing on finishing the race and trying my best to get the car into the winners circle.  Finishing up front is always the goal.”

Grewohl says the experience from previously will benefit going forth due to Iowa Speedway being a one mile oval.

“Racing with 36 plus other drivers at high speed, definitely sharpens your skills and when racing in close quarters you have to take care of your equipment in order to finish,” he added.

Grewohl got interested in racing at a young age, through watching races as a kid with his father.

“One year, I asked my dad if I could get a motor cycle or a go-kart,” Grewohl explained. “I was able to choose one and I chose the go-kart.  After lots of practice in the parking lot of the local high school, I finished third in my class at my first race in Sacramento, CA.  I was hooked from that moment and decided this is what I wanted to do. I haven’t looked back since.”

Since then, Grewohl has found success each step of the way, catching the attention of Chip Ganassi. Ganassi called Grewohl in 2003 to ask the then 17-year-old to come drive for him.

“Well, I actually thought it was a joke,” Grewohl said. “I got call from a number I didn’t recognize and I didn’t actually believe it until I was put on hold and I heard a recording of all their wins playing in the background.  The fact that Chip made a point to call me himself was incredible.  I soon packed my bags and went to start training with the team. That call was a dream come true.”

In his racing career to date, Grewohl has had many memorable moments, including a special test at Kentucky Motor Speedway.

“I had been invited to Kentucky Motor Speedway where I was to test for my Indy Racing League driver’s license,” he said. “Brian Barnhart and Tony George were there.  I had never been at this track or driven an Indy Pro Series Car.  They are testing you to see how you listen, follow directions, how attentive you are and how you interact with the engineers. I took the car out for a couple of shakedown laps and was told to bring it back in.  How you enter and leave the pits is also being looked at.

“After checking the car, they sent me back out and turned me loose. I was given my IRL License on my 3rd lap and broke the previous year’s qualifying lap record on my 6th lap.  It doesn’t get any better than this for a kid with dreams of racing professionally.”

To others who want to get into racing, Grewohl says the key is to make sure to listen to those who have had success before you.

“Learn all you can, don’t be afraid to ask questions,” he said. “Be respectful of everyone, always be humble and let your driving do the talking.  Earn your respect on and off the track.  Racing is a world where everyone knows everyone so make sure you always leave a good impression.  Never give up on your goals.”

  • Venturini Motorsports sweeps front row at Daytona

Venturini Motorsports sweeps front row at Daytona

townleypoledaytona(DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – February 15, 2013) – John Wes Townley gave Venturini Motorsports what they were looking for, at least for now. Townley, in the No. 15 Zaxby’s Toyota, won the Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell for Saturday’s 50th running of the Lucas Oil 200 presented by MAVTV American Real at Daytona Int’l Speedway. It was Townley’s career-first pole award in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards. After qualifying, Townley met with Ansell guests Jack Woodlock (far left) and Tom Taulman II in the presentation of the Menards Pole Award Presented by Ansell. (see photo)

Townley circled the 2.5-mile superspeedway in 49.638 seconds, for an average speed of 181.313 mph.

“I’m so excited,” Townley said. “It’s great for Venturini Motorsports, and certainly great for Zaxby’s. Tomorrow’s going to be the day that really counts, but it means a lot to be able to come here and get the pole. We just need to come out tomorrow and back it up.

“The car is working very well in the draft too, so I think it’ll hold up very well in the race.”

Milka Duno, in the No. 35 Cantv-Milka Way Toyota, qualified a career-best second at 180.505 mph, sweeping the front row for Venturini Motorsports.

“This is wonderful,” said Duno. “I now have the tools and the right people around me. This is my first race with Venturini Motorsports, and we’re going to do a super job together in the race tomorrow.”

With Townley on the pole and Duno alongside, the stage is set for what could be a couple of firsts at Daytona. For one, Venturini Motorsports, despite winning 26 ARCA races in four different decades, has never won at Daytona. Secondly, no female driver in ARCA history (61 years) has ever won an ARCA race anywhere.

Eight-time Daytona winner Bobby Gerhart qualified third in his own No. 5 MAVTV American Real Chevrolet, with Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver Darrell Wallace, also in a Venturini Motorsports entry, trailing in fourth. Frenchman Julian Jousse qualified fifth in the David Leiner Racing-Barbarac.fr Toyota.

ARCAracing.com will continue to feature live timing and scoring of all the on-track activity Saturday, including final practice and the race to follow.

The 50th Anniversary Lucas Oil 200 presented by MAVTV American Real at Daytona is live on SPEED Saturday at 4:30.

The Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) is among the leading auto racing sanctioning bodies in the country. Founded in 1953 by John and Mildred Marcum, the organization administers more than 100 events each year in multiple racing series, including the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, the ARCA/CRA Super Series, the ARCA Truck Series and the ARCA Midwest Tour, plus weekly racing at Toledo and Flat Rock Speedways.

Dwayne Baker adds NASCAR Whelen All American Series Provincial Champion to accomplishments

bakerLooking back at last season, there were certain drivers that stood out for their accomplishments and one of those is Dwayne Baker. The Stayner, Ontario native won 15 of the 35 Late Model features at Barrie Speedway to take home not only the track championship, but the 2012 NASCAR Whelen All American Series Ontario Provincial Championship.

“We got to go down to Charlotte for the banquet and NASCAR did a heck of a job putting it on,” Baker noted. “The three days down there were great with the Hall of Fame, the banquet.”

The most impressive thing about the numbers for the driver of the No. 48 Centennial Chrysler and Baker Performance Late Model is the 28 top fives and 34 top 10s.

One thing that surprised many about Baker’s run was he went with a Port City Chassis, while many of Ontario’s best run the McColl Racing Enterprises chassis. However, Baker noted that it is one of the best cars that he has ever driven and noted the input from Ontario racing legend Jr. Hanley on getting the car ready for the season.

Beyond his success at Barrie, Baker was also able to notch a pair of podiums in the M.R.E Pro Series, as well as winning the 75 lapper Autumn Colors Limited Late Model feature to end the season.

“It felt pretty good,” Baker noted. “We were right there. Right place, right time.”

For 2013, Baker is making the switch back to Sunset Speedway in hopes of beating out Sunset’s best for the track championship.

“We got a brand new car for this year, running the full season at Sunset trying to beat Tommy for the championship,” Baker said.

They have also built a brand new OSCAAR Super Late Model and expect to be out with that car seven to eight races throughout the 2013 season.

For his efforts this past year, Baker was ranked fifth in Spencer Lewis’ Inside Track Motosports News Ontario Asphalt Short Track Rankings.

daytonalucasoil2013at180Daytona Beach, Fla. (Febuary 14, 2013– ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards practice was cut short today at Daytona Int’l Speedway because of rain, but not before John Wes Townley, in the No. 15 Zaxby’s Toyota, positioned himself atop the leader board.

Townley, in a Venturini Motorsports (VMS) entry, circled the 2.5-mile superspeedway in 49.288 seconds, an average speed of 182.600 mph.

“We have an excellent shot at this; the car is really, really good,” said Townley. “I think we’re better off than we were at the test, and we were really good then. The Venturinis have so much experience in ARCA. This is such a great opportunity for us to go out there and get a win.”

Townley’s career-best ARCA finishes, a third and a fifth, came at Daytona.

“I think it’s a lot of luck, more than anything on the speedways. But I love this place. The speedways are a lot of fun for me, and I think that helps. There are obviously a lot of variables that go into it. It’s a gamble any way you look it, but I sure like our chances.”

Venturini Motorsports grabbed the top four positions overall.

Milka Duno, in the No. 35 Cantv-Milka Way Toyota, was second fastest overall at 181.848 mph with VMS teammates Justin Boston and Darrell Wallace trailing in third and fourth, respectively. In all, 43 drivers posted time and speed today.

The ARCA garage opens at 7:00am ET Friday morning with Menards Pole Award Qualifying presented by Ansell following at 2:00pm.

ARCAracing.com will feature live timing and scoring of all the on-track activity, including qualifying, final practice Saturday and the race to follow.

The 50th Anniversary Lucas Oil 200 presented by MAVTV American Real is live on SPEED Saturday at 4:30pm ET.

  • ARCA Racing Series to celebrate 50 years at Daytona with Saturday’s Lucas Oil 200

ARCA Racing Series to celebrate 50 years at Daytona with Saturday’s Lucas Oil 200

ARCAThe ARCA Racing Series, presented by Menards, will officially kick off their 61st racing season this Saturday, February 16th, at the Daytona International Speedway. The running of the Lucas Oil 200, presented by MAV TV-American Real, is going to be extra special this year. That’s because it will be ARCA’s 50th anniversary of racing at Daytona.

Traditionally, ARCA’s annual season opener at the all American center of speed is always an exciting event. However, this 50th anniversary event appears to have the making of something extra special. The Lucas 200 has 45 entries that features a mix of distinguished veterans combined with talented youngsters who are looking to launch a racing career at the national level.

Topping the list of those veteran drivers is Lebanon, Pennsylvania’s Bobby Gerhart, the driver of the #5 MAV TV Chevrolet. When it comes to ARCA racing at Daytona, Gerhart is on top of every major category you can name. He has the most series’ starts at Daytona-25, the most wins-8, the most top five finishes-10 and the most top tens-14. Gerhart also rules the ARCA qualifying sessions at Daytona as well. He has a series’ high four pole positions, the most starts from the front row at 6 and the most wins from the pole position at three. Another major plus here is the presence of crew chief Bill Gerhart. The Gerharts are regarded as the most effective racing brother duos in Daytona ARCA history.

Also topping the ARCA veterans list is Frank Kimmel. The Clarksville, Indiana native will be driving the #44 Ansel-Menards Toyota in Saturday’s race. Kimmel is a nine time ARCA champion with 76 series wins which places him second on the all time winner’s list just behind Iggy Katona’s 79 wins. Kimmel will be making his 22nd, consecutive, start in the Lucas Oil 200 and will be looking to rectify a long over due situation: he has never won at Daytona.

Keeping it in the family, while also representing the young guns of ARCA racing, is Will Kimmel, Frank Kimmel’s nephew, who will be behind the wheel of the #68 Gary Yeomans Ford driving for his father-team owner-crew chief Bill Kimmel Jr. This young driver finished third in last year’s Daytona event and should be regarded as someone to keep an eye on this Saturday.

Reigning ARCA series champion Chris Buescher will also be looking for checkers in the Lucas Oil 200. Buescher returns with his championship team from last year and will be driving the #17 Raulo Brothers Racing Ford. However, the Prosper, Texas native will not be defending his title this year. Buescher will be driving a partial ARCA schedule while dividing his time in some selected NASCAR Nationwide Series events for Roush Fenway Racing.

When it comes to prominent young guns in Saturday’s race, Turner-Scott Motorsports may have the definitive answer: Kyle Larson. The 20 year old Elk Grove, California resident will be driving the #4 Cessna Chevrolet. There are many racing observers who are pointing at this young driver and saying “real deal.” His on track accomplishments in just the last two seasons alone are nothing short of amazing. He has been successful in both NASCAR stock cars and USAC open wheel cars. For Larson, the Lucas Oil 200 will be an opportunity for extra seat time. He will be driving for Turner-Scott Racing full time this season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. This arrangement is with the blessing and support of Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing who has a driver development deal with Larson. There are many observers saying that this talented young man will be behind the wheel of an EGR Sprint Cup ride much sooner than later.

Never to be overlooked is the presence of Venturini Motorsports, one of the true veteran organizations in ARCA racing. The Venturinis will be fielding four teams in Saturday’s race. Topping that list is Mobile, Alabama’s Darrell Wallace who is yet another young driver who has garnered a lot of attention with the term “real deal” also attached to his name. Wallace will be making his Daytona Debut this Saturday in the #55 Toyota Manufacturing Toyota Camry. His presence in the Lucas Oil 200 is also additional seat time. Wallace was recently signed to drive full time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for Kyle Busch Motorsports with the support of Joe Gibbs Racing who has a driver development deal with him.

Also in Saturday’s race for Venturini Motorsports will be John Wes Townley. Already driving in NASCAR’s Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series, the Watkinsville, Georgia driver will be behind the wheel of the #15 Zaxby’s Toyota. Former Indy Car driver Milka Duno returns to the ARCA series this year on a full time basis with VMS. The Caracas, Venezuela driver will campaign the #35 CAN TV-Milka Way Toyota. Rounding out the Venturini effort will be ARCA newcomer Justin Boston, from Baltimore, Maryland, in the #25 ZLoop Computer and Electronics Recycling Centers Toyota. Boston will also be competing for the ARCA Rookie of the Year title.

With that diverse mix of series veterans combined with all that young talent, the Lucas Oil 200, presented by MAV TV-American Real, has the makings of a very exciting race. You can catch the action on the SPEED Channel this Saturday beginning at 4pm eastern time. A replay of the race will be aired by SPEED on Sunday morning at 1am eastern.

  • Gary McLean reflects back on championship, looks forward to OSCAAR Mod season ahead

Gary McLean reflects back on championship, looks forward to OSCAAR Mod season ahead

mcleanLast year, Gary McLean had an OSCAAR season to remember, winning the first ever OSCAAR Modified Championship with eight victories in 12 starts. McLean had only one finish outside of the top five, which came at Sauble Speedway after suffering a flat tire early in the race and then contact later on.

McLean was one of the early season favorites, having raced Modifieds for a long time and being Varney Motor Speedway’s all-time Modified race winner.

There was some uncertainty going into the season as there were tracks that McLean hadn’t raced yet. That didn’t faze him as he won at some of those, including the season opener at Sunset Speedway after a battle with Barry Newman.

“We weren’t worried,” McLean said at this past weekend’s Canadian Motorsports Expo. “The other guys were coming in and we were more experienced than they were.”

Throughout the season, there were many memorable battles, including battles McLean had with his cousin Brent.

“He ran second to us every night, if he didn’t hit the wall trying to get to us,” McLean commented. “Overall, all the guys in that series are good racers and I’m looking forward to next year.”

Many note that the Modifieds have always produced this solid racing, but it was OSCAAR’s backing that added the final touch to the product.

garymclean_featurewin“It was a huge success,” McLean said. “Brought a lot of people out to see the modifieds. They can put on good races and a lot of people didn’t think that and OSCAAR brought everything out there, laid it out for us and it worked.”

Heading into the second season for the OSCAAR Mods, McLean sees the racing being even better.

“With the racing that went on, a lot of guys have bought cars for this year,” McLean said. “Those guys are talented and I think you’re going to see good racing.”

For his efforts, Gary McLean was listed in the 10th spot in Spencer Lewis’ 2012 Inside Track Motorsports News Ontario Asphalt Short Track Power Rankings. He was recognized for his success as part of the 2013 Canadian Motorsports Expo on Saturday February 9th.
