  • Dan Price Excited For Upcoming OSCAAR Modified Season

Dan Price Excited For Upcoming OSCAAR Modified Season

After running Thunder Car for the past several years at Peterborough Speedway, Dan Price is set to take his racing on road in 2015, joining the OSCAAR Modified tour.

“There’s a lot of excitement for 2015 with the move to our faster car and a touring series stacked full of veterans and young hot shots,” Price said. “The plan is to get seat time, finish all the races and get this program moving in a direction of getting faster and faster as the season rolls on. I really like these cars and this series, this is where I see our team making our home for some time.”

Price says he made the decision to move up, feeling that it was the right time based on the amount of years that he has been behind the wheel of a Thunder Car.

“You get to the point where you outspend the class. I didn’t think it was my class anymore,” he explained. “I wanted more, and I didn’t want to run that class by spending more in the Thunder Car and going more into it. It was time. I’d done as much as I felt I should do to a Thunder Car, and it was just time to move on.”

The move follows one of his best Thunder Car seasons in his career that saw him run up front throughout the season at Peterborough Speedway. It also featured one of the biggest highlights – his first career victory.

“It meant a lot,” he commented. “It was a long time….It meant everything. That’s what you work for. It was nice to have that. Hopefully we’ll get another one, but I’ll always have that one.”

Now set forth for the new challenge in 2015, the driver of the No. 09 Hy-Hope Farm and Golf Course, Langille’s Scrap and Cores, and A&T Mechanical Modified says that the goals for this year are to finish each event, not tear anything up and learn as much as he can.

“I’ll be at a two to three year learning curve with this car,” he added. “I’m not going throw buckets and buckets of money at it and try and come out of the gate like gangbusters. It’s a building process. We’re going to have some fun, stay out of trouble and get laps. That’s the plan.”

The OSCAAR tour also brings forth a pair of trips to Peterborough Speedway, where Price hopes to have a good showing in front of the hometown crowd.

“I’m looking forward to Peterborough,” he commented. “A lot of fans there, a lot of laps around that place – I have more laps than any other track on the schedule. Just looking forward to going back to home.”

Though beyond the OSCAAR schedule, Price has also expressed in interest in taking hte modified down to the Call of the Wild event at Kalamazoo Speedway in Michigan.

“It’s the same weekend as the Rick Woolner Memorial – I’d hate to miss that, but at that point and late in the season, if I’m far back to contend for Rookie of the Year, I may take that weekend and head to Michigan,” he commented. “I’m very excited to get the wide tire, fast car on Kalamazoo. As fun as it was in the Thunder Car and how fast that car was around, I’d really like to try a fast car.”

  • Arrow Electronics to Sponsor James Hinchcliffe

Arrow Electronics to Sponsor James Hinchcliffe

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports announced on Thursday, February 5 that Arrow Based Electronics will be the primary sponsor of the team’s No. 5 Honda driven by James Hinchcliffe.

“Having Arrow Electronics as a primary team sponsor is just another step in this dream come true,” co-owner Sam Schmidt said. “The company’s vision is perfectly aligned with SPM and INDYCAR’s key focal points: speed, innovation and technology. We look forward to an exciting race season and a great partnership for years to come.”

Aiden Mitchell, Vice Persident of Semiconductor Marketing for Arrow Electronics, says the partnership allows the company to showcase how their technology can help people become drivers. They showcased this technology last year when Schmidt, who suffered a spinal-cord injury in 2000 that left him a quadriplegic, got to drive a 2014 modified Corvette over 100 mph at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“Working with Sam and sharing the technology behind our modified Corvette C7 in our Immersions series has been a pivotal element in demonstrating the power of M2M technologies and the Internet of Things,” Mitchell added. “We look forward to taking this next turn with SPM and helping to spread the word with a wider Arrow audience.”

Hinchcliffe left Andretti Autosport at the end of the 2014 to join SPM for the upcoming season. The Canadian is a three-time race winner and won the Rookie of the Year Award in 2011.

“I’m very excited to drive the No. 5 Arrow Electronics car this season and set our sights on victory lane,” the 28-year-old said. “Although the No. 77 has been part of SPM since 2011, we have an incredible opportunity to spread the word about Arrow’s Five Years Out initiative, and coincidentally, we were lucky that the No. 5 was available to further Arrow’s brand story.

“The Five Years Out philosophy shows that Arrow sets the bar high and that’s exactly what we want to do in the Verizon IndyCar Series,” Hinchcliffe added. “Competing in the most versatile racing series in the world means we’re focused on technology, which makes this partnership a natural fit.”

SPM added that James Jakes, who also made his Verizon IndyCar Series debut in 2011, will drive the No. 7 Honda.

“There’s a lot of excitement for 2015 with the move to our faster car and a touring series stacked full of veterans and young hot shots,” Price said. “The plan is to get seat time, finish all the races and get this program moving in a direction of getting faster and faster as the season rolls on. Price had a successful season last year, scoring his first career feature victory mid-summer.

“Last season was one of the most memorable in my career,” he commented. “Finally got that first feature win, was a threat to win more on many other nights. Dustin Jackson to be Part of Motorama’s Young Guns Panel

The Motorama Custom Car and Motorsports Show takes place from March 13th to 15th at the International Center and will feature some of the top individuals in both the car enthusiast and motorsports industry. The Younggun Panel was always a highlight of the Canadian Motorsports Expo, featuring the top young drivers speaking about their racing experience to date.

Last season, 14-year-old Dustin Jackson had a standout season in the OSCAAR Modified ranks, finishing sixth in points with six top-fives and 12 top-10s in 14 events through 2014,

“Was an awesome season all around for the team and myself,” Jackson commented. “Lots of great memories, lots of experience last year. It was definitely a season to remember and we are happy with our results and success.”

  • Verizon IndyCar Series Executives Excited About Upcoming Season and Future

Verizon IndyCar Series Executives Excited About Upcoming Season and Future

With the Verizon IndyCar Series season just over a month away, excitement is picking up with what is to come. That excitement stems all the way up to the executives and their thoughts entering the season.

Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Company, expressed his excitement by reflecting back on last year, saying that it was a “fantastic year” with viewership going up by 25%.

“You can study other sports, other motorsports, and that is not something we take for granted,” Miles commented. “That is not something that is an Act of God or natural law.  A 25% lift is a quality, meaningful increase for us.  Took our average audience over a million people for the first time in a while.  So that’s important.
“The metrics on social media were actually a little higher.  Again, we started from a pretty low base.  But I think we showed we could move the needle, and fan engagement through digital and social media was much, much improved.

“We signed a number of sponsors, principal among them obviously was Verizon.  That wasn’t so long ago.  They made a terrific impact for the Verizon IndyCar Series, for all our stakeholders, our fans, and will continue to invest.  I think they’re a perfect fit.  But there were others as well, including TAG Heuer.  Angie’s List is how the title of the Grand Prix.”

Miles feels that their TV numbers can only continue to increase moving forward, too, with agreements in place with their partners for “a number of additional years”. He added that they’ve had conversations with their partners about things that they can within their agreements to “make meaningful additional increases in the audience”.

“So more continuity like I think we achieved with ABC in May would be a good thing,” he commented. “It isn’t helpful to a national following of fans to be on one broadcaster one week, two weeks later, another. It’s very hard for our television partners to promote the next race if the next race isn’t theirs. So working towards additional continuity would be important. I think we can make some improvements in that regard.

“Harder, but something that is worth discussing from our perspective is whether or not it’s possible to change the current exclusivities, where ABC has broadcast exclusivity, and NBC Sports Network was cable exclusivity. If each could have both, you could imagine ESPN, for example, possibly being a player for us, and you can imagine NBC as opposed to just NBC Sports Network taking some races.

“That is harder. That is not consistent with our current agreements. There are ideas like that that at some level are being discussed for a next set of improvements.”

Beyond looking at the television package heading into the new year, that excitement continues to build, beginning with the schedule. Miles says that their objective is to have 20 races a season, which they sit at 16 races currently. The season currently begins at the end of February with the streets of St. Petersburg, before finishing with Sonoma Raceway at the end of August. Moving towards 2016, though, Miles is hopeful to have the season start the weekend after the Super Bowl in February, and go all the way till Labor Day in September.

“So, yes, we started by ending earlier.  You haven’t yet seen us start earlier.  But I want you to understand that’s where we’re going,” Miles expressed. “We want to race in a very full schedule, about 20 races, from the weekend after the Super Bowl in early February through Labor Day.  That will feel very different than it did last year and this year.  You will see the expansion.

“Related to that, there’s the question of international races.  We said we think there’s an important market opportunity for us on a limited basis at the very beginning of the championship.  The strategy about when we schedule ourselves beginning of February through Labor Day is not dependent upon international races.  We could fill that early part of the series, February, with additional North American races.  But, one, there aren’t too many places where we can race climate-wise.  Two, we’re determined to find really vibrant new race opportunities.  So we’re going to be discerning about that.”

Miles added that they keep reminding themselves that they’re not Formula One, so you’re not going to see them going around the glove each week, but rather focus on a “limited number of international races at the beginning of the calendar in February, then get to the States, North America, stay in North America”.

Though in adding events, INDYCAR knows that they have to be careful to not run into cancellations – as with this year and Brazil. The season was supposed to open at Brazil next weekend, but that event was cancelled. Miles commented that the cancellation “had to do with the changing of elections, politics between a national and regional federal district of Brasilia governments”, but adds that INDYCAR did not lose anything financially due to the cancellation. Miles added that he wouldn’t be surprised if the country isn’t having second thoughts due to the economical loss.

“The sponsorships were at or above where they wanted them to be with a title and a major presenter. All the hospitality was sold. You couldn’t buy another box or suite. Ticket sales were very strong,” Miles commented. “All I’m trying to say is I think the uptake among fans in Brazil was very meaningful. It was going to be at lease a 30,000 person, in terms of attendance, and it might have been 45,000 or 50,000, and economically it was going to be a success.”

One of the markets that fans would be hopeful of seeing return is the streets of Baltimore, which Miles agrees as he feels everybody enjoyed the event.

“In dealing with Baltimore, again I want to emphasize, they invested, did a great job,” Miles added. “As many of you know they were racing around a Major League Baseball park, NFL.  They weren’t sure they wouldn’t have to move their date for IndyCar on those years when Major League Baseball or NFL football had to be played in one of those stadiums.  We needed a partner for the Labor Day weekend that could give us data equity.  We want that continuity from year to year.”

If the schedule asn’t enough to kick off excitement, everybody has been focused on the new aero kits that both manufactures have been open to developing for their respective drivers. Chevrolet unveiled theirs earlier this month, with Honda’s to be unveiled mid-March.

“Obviously the rules are going to change drastically with the aero kit.  We’re opening up the formula, so there are going to be a lot of rules associated with that which we’ve not had to deal with in the past,” Derrick Walker, President of Operations and Competition for INDYCAR, commented. “When you look at our Competition Committee, we have a series of stewards that judge the on track activity and the technical group that are going to look at the aero kit regulations and everybody staying onboard with the rules as they’re written.”

  • James Hinchcliffe’s 2015 IndyCar Livery Unveiled at Canadian International Auto Show

James Hinchcliffe’s 2015 IndyCar Livery Unveiled at Canadian International Auto Show

As part of the Honda Indy Toronto display at the Canadian International Auto Show, the livery for James Hinchcliffe’s Verizon IndyCar Series car was unveiled – well, sort of.

The IndyCar on display contains the livery that Hinchcliffe will be running, along with some minor touches to promote the IndyCar race in Toronto in June.

Following a season that saw him finish 12th in points with Andretti Autosport, Hinchcliffe makes the move to Schmidt Peterson Motorsports to drive their No. 77 entry with sponsorship from Spyder. Simon Pagenaud drove the No. 77 Honda last season, scoring a couple wins en route to a top-five career; Pagenaud will drive for Team Penske in 2015.

“It’s been a really great transition,” Hinchcliffe commented as part of IndyCar Media Day. “It all happened quickly after the season ended.  We’ve sat around waiting forever to get into the racecar.  You can get to know guys on the floor, but at the end of the day what matters is what you can achieve on the racetrack.

“Getting to work with Allen again, we worked together at Andretti, now he’s running my program.  Very experienced engineer.  Been around a long time.  That’s been a natural transition there.  A lot of mechanics I worked with either directly or indirectly when I was racing for Sam in Lights.  It’s been easy to get into the culture there.

“Obviously a much smaller operation from where I’ve been the last three years.  It’s cozy.”

If the car is underneath him, Hinchcliffe has proven to know how to get the job done, having won three races in 2013.

Below is a gallery, showcasing the new livery.
