  • Leilani Munter Continues to Share Renewable Energy Message Through Racing

Leilani Munter Continues to Share Renewable Energy Message Through Racing

Racer, self-proclaimed vegan hippie chick, and passionate environmentalist Leilani Munter is continuing her efforts to share her renewable energy message through her racing.

In fact she will do just that at the next ARCA race in Kansas for Venturini Motorsports, in addition to making a special energy stop along the way.

“I’ll be running Kansas on October 3rd with Venturini Motorsports,” Munter said. “It’s called the Energy Freedom car to address all of the environmental issues that I am passionate about. I think the race will air on Fox Sports 2 at 7 PM on October 3rd.”

“Prior to the race, I’m going to this really cool town, Greensburg, Kansas,” Muter continued. “They were hit with an F5 tornado and it basically took out the whole town. It was devastating and demolished the whole town.”

“But they did something really amazing,” Munter said. “They rebuilt the town on 100% renewable energy. The last place that you would expect is that this little tiny town could become an example to the world that you can run completely off of renewables. So, I’m going to sit down with some of the families that lived through that tornado and saw how the renewable energy has changed them. I’m going to document this and talk to the Mayor and we’re just going to produce a short film that we will share on line to tell the story of this amazing town and how they rebuilt. I want to show that Kansas is doing this as part of the race weekend. I think it’s a story that many have not heard. I’m really excited about it and will put that out after the Kansas race.”

Munter has also been sharing her renewable energy passion by taking electric routes to the race track. In fact, she has taken her new Tesla across the country to the race track to demonstrate just how easy and convenient that mode of transportation really is.

“I bought my Tesla about a year ago now,” Munter said. “It’s just a wonderful car and I haven’t been to the gas station for a year now. But I’ve also discovered in owning this car how many myths there are about electric cars. One of the many things that people don’t understand is that there is a charging network throughout the country that makes it possible for me to easily do cross country trips.”

“That’s the purpose of behind why I wanted to drive to Chicagoland Speedway because I wanted people to see and have an example that long electric road trips are possible and they are convenient,” Munter continued. “I was able to stop for 15 minutes, just long enough to get out of your car, use the rest room, have a cup of coffee, walk back to the car and go. And it is a free charge and it is also a very fast charge.”

“I think one of the myths that people have is that it is not convenient and that you cannot go long distances,” Munter said. “I felt like it was important to do that to show a real time example. I partnered with my friends from the Solution Project, an organization that I joined on the Board of Advisors. Their goal is to push forward with the notion that the US can be using 100% renewable energy by 2050.”

“The other thing I wanted to bring out with that road trip was to show that one of the problems with gasoline is that a large amount is coming from OPEC, from overseas and oftentimes from countries that don’t like us or countries where there is conflict, which makes gas prices go up,” Munter said. “When you are charging with electricity, there are several advantages. One is that all that money is staying locally in the United States. So, it’s very patriotic to drive an electric car because you are paying money to travel but all of the money stays where domestically. When you fill up with a gallon of gasoline, a large portion of what you are paying is going to OPEC. So, if you don’t want to fund or be part of the problem of spending dollars on foreign oil, then you would want to drive electric. Who in their right mind would argue about keeping money in the United States?”

While Munter has seen her share of resistance to her renewable energy message in the past, she has definitely seen some changes in recent years, with more understand and embracing of the technology.

“There are always going to be people that I’m not going to win over,” Munter acknowledged. “I understand that there are those who are resistant to change. I’ve been talking about this for many, many years and there was a great deal of criticism.”

“But I see that changing now,” Munter continued. “For example at the Daytona race that I ran last year, we actually had the Green Tea Party out there. This is the Tea Party, which is definitely conservative not liberal side of things. They were there because they are fighting for energy independence. They don’t think it is fair that the utilities are trying to stop Americans from putting solar on their homes. They can agree that we as Americans can choose the type of power we want.”

“That is the most important conversation to have.”

Munter also acknowledged that her environmental passions have at times negatively impacted her racing passion. But in the end, she has chosen to be true to her convictions and not compromise her strongly-held beliefs.

“I definitely did make a choice,” Munter said. “There were a few offers that I’ve had in the past to be in the car full-time at higher levels than I am at now. But those companies offering that opportunity to me were not in line with my environmental views.”

“In essence, I want to work with people that are trying to make the world a better place,” Munter continued. “Ethically I ended up making the decision to walk away from being in the race car full-time and possibly have a full-time career as a driver but possibly selling out in terms of who I was as a person personally.”

“That was probably a defining moment for me,” Munter said. “The racer in me thought ‘Oh my God, I could be in a car full-time.’ At the end of the day, I couldn’t do it. So, in that respect, the environmental front to my racing because I made that conscious choice did impact my racing career. I did choose to walk away and in some cases, yes it has hurt my racing career because I’ve had less races than I could have.”

“But I wouldn’t have felt good about it,” Munter continued. “I would have felt badly about not aligning myself with who I want to be and how I want to live.”

While it may have taken some time for her energy and racing passions to come together, Munter is most hopeful for the remainder of the 2014 racing season, as well as the new ARCA season ahead next year.

“Hopefully as the world has woken up to our environmental problems, I have definitely seen a lot more people recognize that what I’m doing makes sense,” Munter said. “And so I’m hoping that they are making choices and that I can find companies that understand why I did walk away and want to support the difference I’m trying to make.”

“Sponsorship is looking pretty good to race in Daytona and things are looking good for me to actually race full-time next year,” Munter said. “I feel like I have more momentum than ever but I will definitely be getting to Daytona in my Tesla.”

“As long as I’m in a race car, it gives me this amazing ability as a biologist and environmentalist to talk to a huge demographic of people that normally wouldn’t hear this message,” Munter continued. “The race car gives me a voice that amplifies my message to a group that we need to talk to.”

“I think we are seeing more and more people seeing that this is a good thing.”

  • Preview: OSCAAR Hanover Holiday Modified set to hit up Sunset Speedway

Preview: OSCAAR Hanover Holiday Modified set to hit up Sunset Speedway

After a month off, the OSCAAR Hanover Holiday Modifieds are set to make their fifth trip of the 2014 season to Sunset Speedway. The 1/3 mile oval always produces a good solid show with excitement from top to bottom.

Two-time Champion Gary McLean leads the crop into the weekend with the points lead. McLean didn’t start off the year as he hoped in the season opener as a result of being a victim to bad luck, but has been on a roll since with five wins and a series of solid finishes. McLean leads the modified drivers in victories at Sunset with seven victories in 12 races. Expect McLean to be fast as he looks to pad his points lead.

Coming off  back-t0-back runner-up finishes, Max Beyore is hoping to pick up his third career victory this weekend. Beyore has been strong at Sunset in the past, scoring three runner-up finishes.

When Davey Terry is at Sunset, he either finishes in the top five – or he has a DNF as a result of bad luck. Terry is hoping for a good run following a third and second on the 1/3 mile at the end of June. A good run would mean a lot after mechanical issues took him out of the running late in August.

In his last six starts at Sunset Speedway, Brent McLean has only one top-five and honestly, that’s surprising. The Conn native is a previous winner at Sunset and has finished in the runner-up spot on four different occasions.

In each appearance at Sunset, Ryan Dick continues to improve as a driver behind the wheel. He’ll be looking for a solid run after finishing sixth at Delaware and ninth at Sunset in August.

Following an eighth place finish at Delaware Speedway, Matt Barton is hoping for a top-five finish this weekend and it’s very well possible as he has done it before, posting three top-six finishes in the races at Sunset so far this year. Shane Stickel is hoping for a good run also, after finishing seventh in August at Sunset. He should be one to watch as he finished second in the season opener at Sunset Speedway.

Bobby Tolton has been struggling to find the right handle on his ride and it has shown in previous Sunset Speedway events. With a couple weeks to look for the right set-up, Tolton will be hoping that the work leads to a solid finish this weekend.

A modified veteran, Brian McLean wasn’t one of the drivers to watch at the beginning. However, McLean continues improving and will be looking for a top-five this weekend after posting a fourth and a third at Sunset at the end of June.

Rookie Tommy Robb hasn’t had the luck that he would’ve hoped for this year with incidents taking him out of contention. Robb will hope to score his fourth straight Sunset Speedway top-10 on Saturday night.

The No. 26  Terry Baker/Kevin Jobs’ owned modified has been quick in the times that it has been on track. Baker posted a third at Kawartha and fourth at Barrie, before winning at Sunset Speedway at the end of June. Cayden Lapcevich then jumped behind the wheel the next night, posting a victory. Baker would cross the line first at Kawartha, though saw the win be lost in post-technical inspection. It’ll be interesting to see what hapepns this weekend.

Speaking of young guns, 13-year-old Dustin Jackson returns to the sight of his first career heat win this weekend and will be looking for more success after three top-fives in the four features at Sunset so far thus year.

Drew Stieler’s season did not start at all as he hoped, though he has been slowly turning it around with stronger runs with each passing weekend. Stieler will be looking for a top-10 finish after finishing 10th at Kawartha Speedway earlier this month.

Going into the weekend, Gary Elliott is one of the drivers to watch as he has been posting solid finishes with each passing week, getting closer to his first Modified victory. Sunset Speedway marks a good spot for it to happen as he has tons of laps around Sunset in the Late Model division, and has ran upfront at Sunset Speedway.

Beyond those mentioned here, there are other drivers that may show their face on Saturday night so be sure to be in attendance to see these cars in action.

  • Hunter-Reay to Compete in Race of Champions in Barbados

Hunter-Reay to Compete in Race of Champions in Barbados

INDIANAPOLIS (Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014) – Indianapolis 500 champion Ryan Hunter-Reay will represent the Verizon IndyCar Series in the annual Race of Champions, slated to take place at the Bushy Park Circuit in Barbados on December 13-14.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be returning to the Race of Champions for the second time,” said Hunter-Reay, who previously raced in the Race of Champions when it was held in Thailand following his 2012 series championship. “My first ROC in Bangkok was an amazing experience, going head-to-head with some of the best drivers from every different motor sport discipline from around the world.”

Hunter-Reay is the most successful American driver currently racing in open-wheel competition and one of the most versatile drivers in the sport. He has 14 career Indy car victories in addition to race wins in the American Le Mans Series and Grand-Am. Hunter-Reay captured three victories during the 2014 season (Barber, Indianapolis and Iowa) and finished sixth in the Verizon IndyCar Series points standings driving the No. 28 DHL Honda for Andretti Autosport.

“Experience really helps with the short amount of seat time in each of the different types of ROC race car,” Hunter-Reay said. “When it’s time to head to Barbados for the race weekend, I’ll be focused on winning. It’s an honor to represent America, INDYCAR and the Indy 500 in such a prestigious event.”

The ROC features drivers from all different types of motorsports disciplines in a head-to-head knockout competition in a variety of equally-matched vehicles. Hunter-Reay is the third driver confirmed for ROC along with Formula One driver Romain Grojean, the winner of the event when it was last held in 2012, and sports car legend Tom Kristensen.

“It’s great news that Ryan is coming back to the Race of Champions,” ROC organizer Fredrik Johnsson said. “This year’s Indianapolis 500 was a true classic and Ryan did brilliantly to hold off his rivals by such a tiny margin after that thrilling dice to the checkered flag. We can now look forward to seeing Ryan take on greats from all over the world of motorsport in December. He’s right at the top of his game and now that he’s already had a taste of the ROC machinery he’s sure to be a big threat to all the other drivers.”

  • Scannell Is Canadian Tire Series’ Top Rookie

Scannell Is Canadian Tire Series’ Top Rookie

Third-Generation Driver Takes Home First-Year Honor

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 24, 2014) – Blood is thicker than frozen water for Matthew Scannell, who shelved his stick and skates in hockey-crazed Canada and followed in the family footsteps by grabbing a steering wheel and gear shifter.

Four years later, the 17-year-old Scannell became the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 Rookie of the Year.

Scannell, from Rockwood, Ontario, used to split his recreational time between hockey and racing, but when time commitments for the latter increased, the decision was easy.

“It’s always been pretty much racing,” Scannell said. “It’s something I thought I wanted to do in the future. I enjoyed hockey at the time because my friends all did it, but I started go-karts when I was seven and I always dreamed of going to the [United] States and trying to make a living at racing.”

Scannell is a third-generation driver. Howie Scannell Sr. was a Canadian stock car racer, as is the younger Scannell’s father, Howie Jr. A veteran of 26 Canadian Tire Series races, Scannell Jr. essentially vacated the driver’s seat for his son, for whom he now serves as the crew chief.

Scannell took home the Canadian Tire Series first-year driver award with 56 rookie points behind the wheel of the No. 56 OMVIC Dodge. He recorded three top-10s in eight starts, and a 12th-place ranking in the championship points standings.

“For what we had, I think we did fairly well,” Scannell said. “We had some good luck and some bad luck. I got a lot of seat time, good exposure, and I learned a lot. As far as the whole year goes, I think it was valuable towards my learning curve.”

Scannell showed progress as the season went along. His two best finishes were the last two races of the season, ninth at Barrie Speedway and eighth at Kawartha Speedway, which served as inspiration for the 2015 season.

“At the end [at Barrie] we were just as quick as the lead pack,” Scannell said. “It was a confidence boost to know that we could go out there and run competitive.”

The Scannells are currently seeking sponsorship, with the intent to compete full-time in 2015. He hopes to make a home in the Canadian Tire Series moving forward.

“It would be great to go run for championships in the Canadian Tire Series,” Scannell said. “The guys we’re going up against, they’ve been doing it for years, and it’s pretty tough to do. You’ve got to be on the ball every race, every week that you go to the track.”

Scannell has a success story to point to as a blueprint. This year’s series champion, L.P. Dumoulin, earned the rookie award in 2011.

The teen is appreciative of what it took to get him to this point, and of the opportunity he has been provided.

“I have to thank my dad for working on the cars all year, the crew for all of their support, car owner Jim Bray for providing me with the opportunity to race, and my mom and my family for supporting me throughout the season,” Scannell said.

Scannell’s accomplishment will be recognized at the NASCAR Touring Series Awards on Dec. 13 in the Charlotte (North Carolina) Convention Center at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

  • Gord Shepherd takes home 2014 Whelen All-American Series Late Model Ontario Championship

Gord Shepherd takes home 2014 Whelen All-American Series Late Model Ontario Championship

With a pair of top four finishes on the final night of competition this year at Barrie Speedway, Gord Shepherd would take home the 2014 Whelen All-American Series Late Model Ontario Championship, eight points ahead of Rick Walt. For Shepherd, it marks the second time in his career that he has won the Ontario crown, repeating last year’s success. It also marks his third track championship in the last four seasons at Barrie Speedway.

“It’s always nice to win,” Shepherd commented on Saturday night. “I wanted to go back to Charlotte again and it’s always hard to win a championship so it’s good for the team. They worked really hard and no matter who wins, your team is always working hard to get you there. There’s always a lot of hard work to get you into the winner’s circle. You got to have good driving, too, but you have to have a good team backing you up and a lot of great sponsors.”

While last season’s championship came with some ease in the form of multiple victories, this year wasn’t as easy as there were a couple on-track incidents that the Ridge Road Racing team had to bounce back from to get themselves back in contention. With the wreck early in the year, it seemed that the RRR outfit was perhaps off on performance at one point during the year. However, into the second half, they hit their stride and with some wins to close out the year, the pieces fell in place.

Shepherd also played the keys to consistancy right in his wheel house as he drove his No. 10 Progressive Waste Solutions, Shelswell Racing, Puzzle Partner, Cookstown Auto Parts, Montana’s Cookhouse of Orillia, Shepherd Trucking, HWY 400 Transmission, Liberty North, Kruegar Electrical, Seasoned Painting, Checkmate, DesJardins Insurance, Eric’s Car Sales, Fox’s Bakery & Deli, Bill le Boeuf Jewelers and The Dock Guy Late Model to 23 top-fives and 28 top-10s this year, highlighted by seven feature victories.

Now with the season in the rearview, Shepherd shifts his focus to the Short Track Playoffs. The Barrie native kicked those off last Thursday night at Sunset Speedway with a solid finish of sixth in the Canadian Limited Late Model Championship 125.

“I think we had a good start at Sunset – finished sixth. I think we had a little better car than sixth, but we messed up on our pit stop,” Shepherd said. “I think we had a pretty good car to contend with some of the bigger guys at Sunset, Sauble. It’ll be interesting. There’ll be a lot of real good cars, but I think we have a good chance.”

Shepherd has done well in the big distance races before, posting a string of top-five finishes in Sunset’s 75 lap invitational features. He also had a solid performance last year at Autumn Colors, finishing fourth despite being involved in an incident with Ryan Kimball at lap 25.

  • Brennan Poole Drives Zaxby’s to Victory Lane at Kentucky

Brennan Poole Drives Zaxby’s to Victory Lane at Kentucky

Cody Coughlin and Daniel Suarez with Career Days; Justin Boston Makes Statement with Strong Double Duty Effort

Concord, NC (September 22, 2014) – Venturini Motorsports (VMS) and its drivers put together an impressive collective effort Friday night under the lights at Kentucky Speedway in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards (ARCA) ZLOOP 150.

Highlighted by Brennan Poole’s sixth career ARCA victory, most ever for a VMS development driver, the team put on a dominant performance earning three top-5 finishes with Cody Coughlin (fourth) and Daniel Suarez (fifth) to go along with Justin Boston’s fifth career Menard’s Pole award and solid ninth place finish. Powered by Joe Gibbs Engines, VMS drivers led a combined 72 of 100 laps during the event – Suarez (39), Poole (27) and Boston (6).

Poole who started the week as an unlikely winner wasn’t expected to race Friday, but when VMS driver John Wes Townley had a scheduling conflict, he stepped in the seat of the No.15 Zaxby’s Toyota and the rest is history.

“Everything just unfolded for me,” a jubilant Poole said. “I love it when that happens. I’m so happy to get to victory lane for Venturini and Zaxby’s. It feels really, really nice. It’s just so special to win here. I can’t believe we won at Kentucky!”

This was Poole’s seventh start of the season and the third race this year he’s substituted for Townley. Substituting for Townley, Poole finished third at Berlin Raceway and sixth last one week ago at Salem Speedway.

“I can’t thank Zaxby’s and the Townley family enough for believing in me and giving me the chance to race!”

Poole considered one of the top un-signed drivers in the country without a full time ride continues to increase his stock value. Since winning the UARA-Stars Championship in 2011 he’s driven for VMS in hopes of attracting sponsorship and an opportunity to bring his talent to the NASCAR level. At 23-years old, Poole has 35 ARCA career starts with (6) victories, (18) Top-5’s and (27) Top-10 finishes. In his only full season (2012) Poole finished third in the championship point standings and earned the coveted Hoosier Superspeedway Championship.

18-year old Cody Coughlin driving his No.55 JEGS Toyota posted his best finish of his young career in the ARCA Series on Friday night with a fourth place finish in the ZLOOP 150 at Kentucky Speedway. In ten starts Coughlin has earned (2) Top-5’s and (7) Top-10’s. As he continues to improve Coughlin will likely be a strong contender at Kansas Speedway in the series finale on October 3rd.

“I am very happy with our run because we qualified well and it showed we had the speed when it counted,” Coughlin said after the race. “When the green flag dropped, we weren’t handling as well as we hoped, plus I am still a little green on these 1.5-mile ovals. But we showed we could fight through adversities and made real good adjustments in the pits. I am just really pleased with how the night went overall.”

Coughlin highly praised his VMS crew for their hard work on the JEGS Toyota Camry.

“We took an OK racecar and turned it into a top-five racecar,” Coughlin exclaimed. “I am really proud of Dave (Leiner, Crew Chief) and the guys for their hard work. Scott Wimmer (spotter) helped me a ton on the radio. I really appreciate their efforts.”

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) development driver Daniel Suarez lived up to the hype surrounding his ARCA debut with a strong fifth place finish behind the wheel of his No.66 ARRIS backed Toyota in Friday’s ZLOOP 150.

“We were one of the cars to beat during the first half of the race but we just missed something there at the end and finished fifth,” said Suarez. “I have no complaints! We learned a lot and had a very strong day of racing. I just want to thank Venturini, Gibbs and ARRIS for giving me the opportunity.”

Suarez, a native of Monterrey, Mexico made blockbuster headlines last month when JGR announced he’d be piloting the No.18 ARRIS NASCAR Nationwide (XFINITY) Series car fulltime in 2015.

Although a rookie making his first competitive laps in ARCA, Suarez was quickly deemed a race favorite after posting the fastest practice speed of the day with a blistering lap time of 31.265 around the 1.5 mile Kentucky oval. Qualifying third for the main event Suarez quickly flexed his JGR horsepower muscle passing teammate Justin Boston on lap-9 for the race lead. Suarez would lead the next 39-laps in dominating fashion before relinquishing the top spot to driver Ben Rhodes during a yellow-flag pit stop on lap-49.

Suarez’s pit stop shuffled him back in the field allowing him to gain valuable experience racing back up through the field. Unfortunately the laps winded down and he was unable to overcome his competition and settled for a fifth place finish. Nonetheless, it was an impressive performance by the 22-year old driver.

Justin Boston, carrying the race sponsor colors started the night from the pole and spent much of the early stages of Friday’s ZLOOP 150 near the front of the field, but a mid-race pit stop for adjustments cost him track position that eventually left the No. 25 ZLOOP Toyota Camry ninth at the finish.

“We started off the night really good,” Boston said. “We led some laps and I felt like we probably had a car we could have finished in the top five with. But we’re here to win, and when we came down pit road for our second stop, we felt like we weren’t quite able to beat the 41 (Ben Rhodes) and 66 (Daniel Suarez) so Billy (Venturini) took a pretty big swing at it. We put a rubber in the rear and we knew that would take a little bit of time. Unfortunately it took a little bit longer than we expected and it cost us a lot of track position. Once we were back in traffic dirty air just killed us. It was like we had a totally different racecar; it was just way too tight.”

The weekend wasn’t over for Boston as he stayed behind at Kentucky Speedway to make his NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) debut for JGR on Saturday evening. Driving the JGR No. 20 ZLOOP Toyota Camry Boston qualified strong and impressively drove his way to a ninth place finish in his NNS debut during the VisitMyrtleBeach.com 300.

  • L.P. Dumoulin takes home championship; J.R. Fitzpatrick wins Pinty’s 250

L.P. Dumoulin takes home championship; J.R. Fitzpatrick wins Pinty’s 250

J.R. Fitzpatrick did everything that he could on Saturday night at Kawartha Speedway to try and get the championship, however it wouldn’t be enough as L.P. Dumoulin held on to finish ninth and take home the championship by three points.

“It just feels incredible,” he commented. “It’s the best feeling that you can get. We’ve been working hard on that program for a long time. We’ve had Weather Tech for three years and to win the championship this year, it’s awesome. Thanks to my whole team, King Autosport, Mario Gosselin, my family for helping me and here we are winning the championship in the Candian Tire Series. It’s a very coveted series. Congratulations to all those guys – congrats to Fitzpatrick on the win.”

It marks Dumoulin’s first career championship as he joins Andrew Ranger, Scott Steckly and DJ Kennington as past champions of the series.

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick led 171 laps en route to his third victory of the 2014 season after sweeping both races at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. Fitzpatrick took the lead for the final time with 78 laps to go and then held off Scott Steckly on a final restart with seven laps to go to take home the victory.

“It was really good,” Fitzpatrick commented. “We came here and tested and had a really good car. We didn’t do many adjustments throughout the day because we knew the car was good on a long run. We got the pole and started off really good. We lost the set-up a little when it started getting slick in three, fell back to third and I got into a battle with the 15 (Mathews) – he’s a complete moron if you ask me. We came in, pitted and the guys got me out first. The 22 (Steckly) was a tad bit better than we were, but my pit stop got me out first and gave me track position and I just held him off.”

After winning last year’s event, Steckly ended off his semi-frustrating season on a good note with a solid second place finish, ahead of Barrie winner Jason Hathaway, Mark Dilley and D.J. Kennington. Kennington was forced to rent Fitzpatrick’s back-up car for this race after his own No. 17 Castrol Edge Dodge did not pre-race technical inspection.

Jeff Lapcevich would finish second, followed by Steve Mathews, Matthew Scannell, Dumoulin and James White.

James Van Domselaar finished 11th, followed by Riverside winner Donald Chisholm, Anthony Simone, Joey McColm and Larry Jackson. Simone led three laps, though fell out of contention after contact from Hathaway. McColm also had another solid run going, though he would find the wall after contact from Dilley. Jackson had to make an unscheduled green flag pit stop after his window net came down.

Noel Dowler finished 16th, followed by Marc-Antoine Camirand, Trevor Monaghan, Erica Thiering and Dwayne Baker. Baker, in his first career start, struggled with the handling throughout the night. Alex Tagliani finished 21st after mechanical issues, followed by Gary Klutt and Andrew Ranger. Ranger qualified second and was having a good run, though fell out with mechanical issues.

INDYCAR previously sanctioned a Verizon IndyCar Series street race in São Paulo (2010-13) and CART raced in Rio de Janeiro (1996-2000) on an oval circuit that was also named in honor of Piquet.

“I look forward to having the race in Brasília; it will be a marvelous event not only for developing Brasília but for all of Brazil,” Brasília Governor Agnelo Queiroz said while visiting the Indianapolis 500 in May. “The racetrack is located close to downtown and we expect more than 100,000 fans at the event. The racetrack is a permanent facility and it was built in the center of the city in 1973, and we were determined in our improvements that the track should meet the safety and performance requirements for INDYCAR, F1 and MotoGP. We truly hope the event will bring investments and economic development for the whole Central region of Brazil.”

Brazilians Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves, two of the most successful and popular drivers in the Verizon IndyCar Series, applauded the 2015 schedule addition.

“It’s awesome news that we’re going back to Brazil next year,” said Kanaan, the 2004 Verizon IndyCar Series champion and 2013 Indianapolis 500 winner. “The fans there love INDYCAR and support the race and we also have Brazilian sponsors involved in our sport, so racing in my home country is a no-brainer. I raced at the Brasília track a very long time ago, in the beginning of the 90’s, but I remember it being very cool. I can’t wait for INDYCAR to get back there in 2015.”

Castroneves, the three-time Indianapolis 500 winner who recently finished second in the Verizon IndyCar Series championship behind his teammate Will Power, echoed Kanaan’s sentiments.

“We are living in great times for Brazil,” Castroneves said. “The World Cup was there a few months ago. The Olympics are coming to Rio de Janeiro in 2016. In between we will see the return of the Verizon IndyCar Series beginning in 2015. Brazilians are very proud of their sports heritage, including motorsports. I know it will be a great event at a new venue for us in the capital of Brasília, the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet, named after one of our greatest drivers. I love racing in my native country and I hope to be the winner next year.”

Brasília joins NOLA Motorsports Park as the second new INDYCAR venue added to the calendar for next season. INDYCAR officials are currently finalizing the entire 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule, which will be announced later this offseason.

  • Mikhail Aleshin released from hospital

    Mikhail Aleshin released from hospital

INDYCAR announced on Tuesday Sept. 16 that Verizon IndyCar Series driver Mikhail Aleshin has been released from Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

“I’m feeling better each day,” Aleshin said. “I’m very happy to be back in Indianapolis with my friends and the team. The doctors are taking very good care of me. Everything is going as planned with my recovery, and before you know it I’ll be back behind the steering wheel.”

On August 29th at Auto Club Speedway, Aleshin would get down below the white line in the corner, resulting in the car sliding sideways. He would then make contact with Charlie Kimball, before cartwheeling into the catch fence. Marco Andretti and Sebastian Bourdais also got a piece of the wreck. Kimball, Andretti and Bourdais would all exit their cars under their own power, while Aleshin was helped from his car.

Loma Linda University Medical Center determined that Aleshin had ustained a concussion, chest injuries, fractured ribs and a broke clavicle. He was then transferred to Methodist on September 9th, where he was evaluated by the doctors, including INDYCAR medical consultants Dr. Terry Trammell and Dr. Kevin Scheid, and underwent a minor surgical procedure on his right shoulder.

INDYCAR added that Aleshin will remain in Indianapolis as he continues his rehabilitation and is expected to make a full recovery from all the injuries he suffered in the incident.
