  • Serious Crash Ends Verizon IndyCar Series Practice Early at Auto Club Speedway

Serious Crash Ends Verizon IndyCar Series Practice Early at Auto Club Speedway

As a result of crash in turns three and four at Auto Club Speedway, Verizon IndyCar Series practice for tomorrow night’s MAVTV 500 has been cut short.

Mikhail Aleshin would get down below the white line in the corner, resulting in the car sliding sideways. He would then make contact with Charlie Kimball, before cartwheeling into the catch fence. Marco Andretti and Sebastian Bourdais also got a piece of the wreck.

Kimball, Andretti and Bourdais would all exit their cars under their own power, while Aleshin was helped from his car. Per IndyCar, Aleshin has been transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center, complaining of right shoulder and right foot pain. Aleshin had qualified eighth for the race during the qualifying session earlier in the evening.

A look at the catch fence after the wreck would reveal a tire stuck in the fence.

The MAVTV 500 marks the final race of the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season as Will Power looks to hold off Helio Castroneves and Simon Pagenaud for his first career championship. Power enters the weekend with a 51 point lead, but qualified 21st for the race while Castroneves qualified pole.

  • Castroneves Draws One Point Closer With Pole

Castroneves Draws One Point Closer With Pole

FONTANA, Calif. – For 14 years, Kika Garcie-Consheso has been toting the Brazilian flag signed by Helio Castroneves after his first Indy car victory on June 18, 2000, at Detroit, waiting for a complementary signature after claiming his first series championship.

Castroneves, who has been the Verizon IndyCar Series runner-up three times, would be more than pleased to fill the blank space on the green, yellow and blue flag of his homeland Aug. 30 following the championship-deciding MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway.

Castroneves, who enters the 250-lap race 50 points behind championship front-runner and teammate Will Power, got off to a fast start by earning the Verizon P1 Award and its corresponding bonus point with a two-lap average speed of 218.540 mph in the No. 3 AAA Southern California Team Penske car on the 2-mile oval.

The pole was his third of the season, third at Auto Club Speedway since 2003 and the 41st of his Indy car career to break a tie with Rick Mears for fourth all time.

Raising the Brazilian flag behind his shoulders in Victory Circle and then autographing it for Garcie-Concheso, his longtime friend who is a consultant for INDYCAR partner Apex-Brazil, is his longtime goal.

“It ain’t over; it’s just beginning,” said Castroneves of the championship race. “Our job is to be aggressive over the 500 miles and finish where we started.”

Power, driving the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car, qualified a season-low 21st with a two-lap average of 212.604 mph. Simon Pagenaud of Schmidt Peterson Hamilton Motorsports, the third driver eligible for the championship, qualified 13th at 215.752 mph.

“With the starting position, I’d rather start at the very front or the very back to stay out of trouble early on,” Power said. “It’s obviously all about the race; it’s very long and we’ll be racing in different conditions.”

Power earned the pole for the October 2013 race at Auto Club Speedway with an average speed of 220.775 mph — a two-lap track record — and went on to win for the first time on a superspeedway.

Team owner Roger Penske is aiming for his 13th Indy car championship since 1977 with Tom Sneva and the first since 2006 with Sam Hornish Jr.

“I always tell our guys if one driver wins the team wins,” Penske said. “We got here because it was a team effort.”

Juan Pablo Montoya recorded a two-lap average of 217.621 mph in the No. 2 Verizon Team Penske car to qualifying second. Josef Newgarden, driving the No. 67 Hartman Oil Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing car, also qualified on the front row (217.600 mph) for the three-wide start.

  • INDYCAR Confirms Grand Prix of Houston Not Returning in 2015

INDYCAR Confirms Grand Prix of Houston Not Returning in 2015

INDIANAPOLIS (Friday, Aug. 29, 2014) – INDYCAR announced today that the Grand Prix of Houston will not return to the Verizon IndyCar Series schedule in 2015. The 1.7-mile temporary circuit at NRG Park hosted doubleheader races in each of the past two seasons, but INDYCAR and officials from the Grand Prix of Houston were unable to define a date for the 2015 event.

“INDYCAR is thankful to Mike Lanigan and his team for all their hard work and for the tremendous support of the Grand Prix of Houston that we received from Shell, Pennzoil and Honda,” said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Company, the parent of INDYCAR and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “We look forward to a continued relationship with Mi-Jack Promotions and will always keep our options open when it comes to an important market like Houston.”

The Grand Prix of Houston was previously part of the Indy car schedule from 1998-2001 and 2006-07.

  • Alex Tagliani unveils special paint scheme, set for busy weekend at CTMP

Alex Tagliani unveils special paint scheme, set for busy weekend at CTMP

On Thursday afternoon at the CHILL Ice House in Toronto, Alex Tagliani unveiled his new livery for this weekend’s Pinty’s Presents the Clarington 200 at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. The new design comes as a result of the second annual Summer of Tag contest, in which allowed Canadian students to design what they feel Tagliani’s car and helmet should look like to raise awareness for food allergies and Anaphylaxis Canada.

Leah Johnson of Erin District High School had her design selected among the submissions to be on the car, as the judges felt the blue and orange colors matched perfect with EpiPen’s colors. The car also displays the slogan ‘Blue to the Sky, Orange in the Thigh’, which is the key catchphrase for administrating an EpiPen shot.

“It’s an awesome feeling, but I’m so happy to be apart of cause and bringing awareness to EpiPen and Anaphylaxis,” Johnson said of having her design selected. Johnson added that while she doesn’t have any food allergies herself, she is friends with people who do and is aware of the importance of awareness.

Tagliani also unveiled the helmet that he will use this weekend, displaying the winning submission by Marcus Uhrich of Archbishop O’Leary High School. The helmet will be auctioned off at Tagliani’s upcoming Tagliani Foundation Golf Classic, with the money being donated to Anaphylaxis Canada. Anaphylaxis Canada is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to helping those at risk of anaphylaxis and those who care for them. Anaphylaxis reports that approximately 2.5 million Canadians have at least one food allergy that effects them, including Tagliani who has a severe peanut allergy.

While promoting a good cause on his NASCAR Canadian Tire Series car, Alex Tagliani will be a busy driver behind the wheel this weekend as he is set to do double duty, running both the Canadian Tire Series race and Camping World Truck Series race this weekend. Tagliani will make his truck series debut driving the No. 19 Reese Ford F150 for Brad Keselowski Racing.

“I’m very honored to race for Brad Keselowski Racing and drive the Reese No. 19 truck so hopefully we can have a good weekend,” Tagliani commented on Tuesday. “Ryan Blaney and I are teaming together so definitely going to try to have a good weekend for the team.”

In trying to post a pair of solid finishes in both races – possibly a pair of wins – there is a big challenge that lies ahead in getting them both set-up accordingly for the 11-turn course, as well as the fact that the Canadian Tire Series car and the truck drive much differently from each other.

“One drives completely different than the other – the braking system, the weight is tremendously different,” Tagliani explained. “You can see just when you drive a NASCAR Canada car, it has less brakes, but the car is much lighter. The chassis are built differently so they feel tremendously different.”

Tagliani admitted that the differences do have him concerned, but he’s committed to doing well for both programs this weekend.

“I think I just have to make sure that I don’t get caught up driving the cars the same way and trying to do the same thing with one and another,” he added. “If I can put myself in the right mode and drive them how they want to be driven in both series, I think I can extract the best out of both.”

Beyond the challenges behind the wheel, there’s the challenge that lies ahead in the track as Canadian Tire Motorsports Park has 11 unique corners at different elevations throughout, ready to catch a driver off-guard.  While Tagliani hasn’t ran the track in a stockcar, he has ran the track in a sports car in the past.

“It’s very fast. Everybody knows that it’s quick,” Tagliani commented. “I think that the track is unique in itself. I think there’s a lot of fast corners, a lot of blind corners, a lot of elevation changes. Turn two is always unique and very special, but turn four is really special too. Then you have turn eight, nine and 10 that are fast. It’s tough to pinpoint one place around the track (that’s tough) because they’re all important. They all have their particulars so it’s not like a track with 12 corners and two are difficult and the rest are easy. I think Canadian Tire Motorsports Park track – everyone is tricky so I think that’s why it’s difficult to pinpoint one spot in the track.”

If anybody can do it, though, it’s Tagliani as a lot of people have faith based on the Quebec native’s previous success on the road courses throughout the years in different forms of vehicles – whether sports cars, IndyCars or the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Tagliani ran a pair of Natiownide Series this year for Team Penske in the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford, finishing second at Road America after passing 21 cars on the green-white-checkered finish, and fifth at the Mid-Ohio Sportscar road course.

  • L.P. Dumoulin looks to put stamp on championship this weekend

L.P. Dumoulin looks to put stamp on championship this weekend

At the beginning of the season, L.P. Dumoulin announced that he would no longer partnered with 22 Racing, but moving forward to a new partnership with Martin Roy. There were a lot of people who questioned the decision and whether Dumoulin would be able to replicate last year’s success this season, and how else it would effect the series moving forward.

Four months later, those thoughts are the last thing on the minds of fans as the focus has since shifted to the incredible season that Dumoulin has turned up. With Mario Gosselin calling the shots, Dumoulin currently leads the standings by 26 points over J.R. Fitzpatrick with three races to go in the season. His season is one of the pure consistency, with his worst finish on the season being sixth place at Riverside International Speedway.

Heading into Canadian Tire Motorsports Park this weekend, there are full intentions of Dumoulin extending that lead further before the final two ovals of the season. He knows how to win at CTMP, putting the pieces together last year’s event, playing the perfect strategy and running a solid race en route to claiming the victory. The victory was no fluke either, as he has two wins and four top-fives in five starts on the 11-turn fast road course. With a win earlier this month at Trois-Rivieres, Dumoulin hasn’t slowed down when making left and right turns at all this year.

The only thing that could perhaps slow his possible championship run this weekend at CTMP is a mechanical issue, or a problem with another competitor. There are 33 drivers entered into this weekend’s Pinty’s presents the Clarington 200, meaning that there will be lots of traffic and fellow competitors to ruin a day. It has been seen throughout this year as both Jason Hathaway and Alex Tagliani have been taken out at separate points this season while running strong due to an incident with lap traffic. A key part to Dumoulin’s weekend will be avoiding that en route to the checkered flag. He can certainly make it easier on himself by qualifying well, something that he has done all year with an average starting spot of 6.6 thus far this year.

Beyond CTMP, there lies two more races that will give Dumoulin a challenge – Barrie Speedway and Kawartha Speedway. In six starts – three starts a piece – Dumoulin has only scored one top-10 between those two tracks over the years. It hasn’t been due to lack of effort, either, as Dumoulin has ran well at both tracks before finding his day go south due to either bad luck or mechanical issues. Though perhaps that is a story of the past as this year on ovals, Dumoulin has been solid, including a win at Saskatoon.

So, could this be the year that Dumoulin scores his first career NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Championship? It looks to be, and he could put his stamp on it this weekend with a victory.

  • Verizon IndyCar Series to Race at NOLA Motorsports Park in 2015

Verizon IndyCar Series to Race at NOLA Motorsports Park in 2015

AVONDALE, La. (Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014) – INDYCAR announced today the addition of NOLA Motorsports Park and the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana to the Verizon IndyCar Series schedule in 2015. The event will be held April 10-12 and organized by Andretti Sports Marketing on a newly-configured 13-turn, 2.67-mile permanent road course layout.

The Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana will feature a three-day festival combining Louisiana’s culture – including live musical acts, entertainment and local cuisine – with the excitement of a Verizon IndyCar Series event.

“We’re delighted about the opportunity to showcase the Verizon IndyCar Series at NOLA Motorsports Park and to INDYCAR fans in the greater New Orleans area,” said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co., the parent of INDYCAR and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “The commitment from track owner Laney Chouest and his associates, combined with the support we received from the state of Louisiana, was the catalyst in making this come to fruition. New Orleans has a history of hosting successful major sporting events and we’re thrilled to be able to add the Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana to the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule.”

Earlier this year, the state of Louisiana committed $4.5 million to make enhancements to the racetrack in support of the event. This investment, combined with private funding from NOLA Motorsports Park, helped facilitate required track and facility improvements necessary to host a Verizon IndyCar Series event.

“The State of Louisiana understands the economic and cultural potential of this annual event,” said NOLA Motorsports Park owner Laney Chouest. “Track operations are currently underway to transform NOLA Motorsports Park into a Verizon IndyCar Series circuit, complete with state-of-the-art equipment, grandstands and viewing platforms racing fans need for a truly enjoyable experience.”

Improvements to NOLA Motorsports Park are already underway and include a reconfigured course layout, which was designed in collaboration with INDYCAR officials and Verizon IndyCar Series drivers, including James Hinchcliffe and Graham Rahal.

“I’m really excited about going to NOLA next year,” Hinchcliffe said. “Having seen the track and the changes they are going to make, I think it’ll be great to drive. Great for fans, too, because you can see most of the track from the stands, which is rare on road courses. But maybe even more than that just going to that city is going to be a blast. They sure know how to throw a party and I know that they are going to roll out the red carpet for INDYCAR and really make it an event.”

INDYCAR will crown its 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series champion and conclude its season this weekend at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. The complete 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule will be released later this offseason.

  • Scott Dixon makes late race pass to win GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma victory

Scott Dixon makes late race pass to win GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma victory

Scott Dixon would make the pass on Mike Conway with three laps to go to take the lead and never looked back en route to scoring the victory in the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma at Sonoma Raceway. It marks the second victory of the season for the 2013 Verizon IndyCar Series Champion and the 35th victory of his career.

“It was tough,” Dixon commented. “There were so many strategies going on and then they were close. So excited. This is big for our team. We’ve had a pretty rough year so far, so happy to get the win.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay would get by Conway the next lap to move into second, bouncing back after failing to finish the race at the Milwaukee Mile.

“It was going our way for a little bit there, picked our way through there on the start,” Hunter-Reay said. “We had a good car in moving away thru traffic. That last set of tires, seemed to be miss the pressures there and had an imbalance there with the tires and had nothing for Scott there at the end.”

Simon Pagenaud would round out the podium after passing Conway through the final corners to remain third in points, now 81 points behind Will Power.

“I didn’t feel that we could be that good, but it turned out to be a good day,” Pagenaud said. “Strategy was very frustrating – very tough for me but we made it, passed Conway on the final corner. I’m delighted and now go into Fontana with a chance at the title, which is important to me.”

Takuma Sato and Juan Pablo Montoya rounded out the top-five, followed by Josef Newgarden, Mikhail Aleshin, Marco Andretti, Justin Wilson, Will Power and Sebastian Bourdais. Power looked to have the strongest car in the field, leading early, however got back mid-field in the process of strategy. Trying to make his way back up through the field, Power would lock up the tires trying to stay tucked to the inside of Newgarden off the hairpin, resulting in a spin.

“It took me by surprise,” he commented. “I was just really tight with a car on the outside of me and didn’t want to get up there. Thought I’d do a few celebratory donuts to show for the youngsters. That’s racing – was able to make a good there.”

He would then go for a second off-track excursion on lap 54 in turn nine. He would hit pit road about six laps later, and from then on, worked at gaining spots throughout the field to conserve as many points as he could, including a three-wide move on the last lap through the final tight corner with Wilson and Sebastian Bourdais.

“It looked like an easy target with Justin struggling – I saw the opportunity and went for it,” he said. “It got a little hairy there with the wheel being ripped out of my wheels but was able to hold on. I couldn’t believe it. That was a hairy last corner.”

Power will now head into the final event of the 2014 Verizon IndyCar Series season next Saturday night at Auto Club Speedway with a 51 point advantage over Helio Castroneves. Castroneves had a rough day, finishing 18th after getting involved in an incident on the opening lap of the race in turn two. There’d be contact between Ryan Briscoe and Bourdais, causing Briscoe to get sideways, leaving Castroneves nowhere to go. Castroneves’ team would change front wing, as well as fix sidepod damage, and tried to get off strategy during the race to make up ground.

“It’s a pretty disappointing finish, to be honest,” Castroneves said. “The Hitachi Chevy was really fast all weekend and to get hit so early on in the race was really tough. That certainly put us behind, fixing the damage in the front and back of the car and it was tough to recover. So now, we are 51 points behind in the championship heading to the finale at Auto Club Speedway, and with the double points there anything can happen.

“We are not giving up. We will keep on it and give everything we have next weekend to try and reach our goal. We are still in it and we know what we need to do now over the 500 miles.”

After leading late in the race, Conway would end up 14th as he ran out of fuel, just a few feet before the line, on the last lap.

“I thought we’d be able to make it – I was hitting the numbers, a little faster some laps, slower others,” he said. “I used an overtake to try and hold off Dixon there and still thought that we’d be okay for a podium. It then died going into 10, picked up a little there and then died again. Just disappointing, but still a good strategy to try and win by the team. Thanks to Ed Carpenter Racing for the opportunity and hard work this year.”

Graham Rahal also tried the same strategy as Conway, also coming up short after leading late in the race and having to pit with four laps to go. He would then suffer a speeding penalty, resulting in a 20th place finish.

“I thought it finally was going to happen. When we had to pass people, we could go by them,” Rahal said. “They told me the fuel number – the yellow map – which was way down in power, way down in boost – and were still able to still pass people. Then dad started counting down laps and I thought ‘okay, we may do this’ and then it ran out there. It may not seem like we’re going to win one, but we’re going to win one.”

GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma Activities Continue on Schedule Following Quake

SONOMA, Calif. – A 6.0 magnitude earthquake with the epicenter about six miles south of Napa woke residents and visitors about 3:20 a.m. (local). The jarring quake lasted about 25 seconds, and multiple aftershocks have been recorded.

Events today at Sonoma Raceway associated with the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma will continue as schedule. No damage was reported at the racetrack – about 15 miles from American Canyon epicenter – or its main arteries, California Highways 37 and 121.

The 2.385-mile, 12-turn road course and buildings at the facility have been inspected, according to a track spokesman. Emergency responders, including Holmatro Safety Team members, are on-site at the facility. No fans or campers were injured during the quake or its aftershocks.

Competition today includes the championship-deciding Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires race and the 85-lap GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma at 1:40 p.m. (Pacific). NBCSN will telecast the Verizon IndyCar Series race at 1 p.m. (Pacific). Also, the race is broadcast on IMS Radio Network affiliates, XM209, Sirius 213, IndyCar.com and the INDYCAR 14 app.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office reported power outages in the city of Sonoma and surrounding area but no significant damage.

Structural damage and fires have been reported in Napa. It’s the largest quake in Northern California since the Loma Prieta temblor in 1989. It is the strongest non-Alaska earthquake in the U.S. this year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Residents felt moderate tremors from the quake as far north as Sacramento and as far south as Santa Cruz.

  • Power Claims Pole at Sonoma; Resets Track Record

Power Claims Pole at Sonoma; Resets Track Record

SONOMA, Calif. (Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014) — Verizon IndyCar Series championship points leader Will Power claimed his second consecutive Verizon P1 Award, and fourth of the season, with a lap of 1 minute, 17.4126 seconds in Firestone Fast Six qualifications for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma.

Power, driving the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car, reset the track record he established in 2012 with a lap of 1:17.2393 (111.161 mph) in the first of the three rounds on the 2.385-mile, 12-turn road course.

It was the fourth pole at Sonoma Raceway for Power, who has won three of the past four Verizon IndyCar Series races on the scenic circuit.

“It’s a track-position race and starting on pole puts us in a good position,” said Power. “If it’s a normal sort of strategy, we’ve put ourselves in a great position to win the race. But you know how these races go. You’ve got to get everything right on race day and we’re going to try and do that.”

With the bonus point for the pole, Power takes a 40-point advantage over teammate Helio Castroneves into the 85-lap race Aug. 24.

“We know we have a very good car and hopefully we’ll have a good race,” said Castroneves, who qualified sixth in the No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske entry. “You have to be aggressive in a way that puts you in position going to the last race to win the championship.”

The season-closing MAVTV 500 on Aug. 30 at the 2-mile Auto Club Speedway oval carries double points.

“Every point counts but there are a lot of points on the table and lots of racing left,” Power added. “I just have to focus on the job at hand.”

Josef Newgarden tied his career-best qualification effort of second on a road/street course (Mid-Ohio earlier this month) with a lap of 1:17.7318 in the No. 67 Hartman Oil/Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing entry.

Reigning series champion Scott Dixon qualified third in the No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car and will share Row 2 with James Hinchcliffe, driving the No. 27 United Fiber & Data car for Andretti Autosport. Ryan Briscoe, who scored his first Verizon IndyCar Series pole at Sonoma Raceway in 2005 and won in 2012, will start on Row 3 with Castroneves.
