  • Andrew Ranger scores third consecutive victory in Jiffy Lube 100

Andrew Ranger scores third consecutive victory in Jiffy Lube 100

For the third consecutive year in a row, Andrew Ranger would celebrate in Circuit ICAR victory lane after making the pass on Alex Guenette with nine laps to go on the 2.113-mile, 14-turn road course on the grounds of Montreal-Mirabel International Airport. It marks Ranger’s 18th NASCAR Canadian Tire Series career victory and his first of the 2014 season.

After taking a couple seasons off to race other divisions, Ranger has returned to the Canadian Tire Series full-time in 2014 as a teammate to two-time series champion D.J. Kennington. Scoring a pair of championships in the past, Ranger hasn’t gotten off to the start that he would’ve hoped this year as he was sitting fifth in points coming into this weekend. Certainly heading into the front stretch, this could be a moral boost for the entire DJK Racing team.

2013 Rookie of the Year Guenette finished second for his first top-five of the year, followed by L.P. Dumoulin, Alex Labbe and Alex Tagliani. Tagliani had to start the race at the tail of the field after having to make an engine change following qualifying yesterday.

J.R. Fitzpatrick would finish sixth, followed by Scott Steckly, Gary Klutt, Jason Hathaway and Peter Klutt. Noel Dowler finished 11th, followed by D.J. Kennington, Anthony Simone, J.F. Dumoulin, Simon Dion-Viens, Derek White, Ray Courtemanche Jr. and Matthew Scannell as 18 drivers finished on the lead lap.

Kerry Micks qualified the No. 02 Johnsonville Dodge yesterday, however would not drive it today due to feeling ill. Mark Dilley who is scheduled to run the oval events in the No. 02 this year would drive the car, finishing 19th.

After scoring a solid top-10 finish a couple weeks ago, Hugo Vannini finished 23rd after finding his way off the track. Jeff Lapcevich also suffered the same fate, spending the majority of the race as a spectator with his No. 76 Tim Hortons Dodge stranded in turn two.

Joey McColm and Jason White both entered this year with high hopes but haven’t had any good luck. The trend continued on Sunday as McColm suffered mechanical issues while White was involved in an incident on the initial start of the race with Luc Lesage.

Fans can watch the Jiffy Lube 100  on TSN on Sunday, July 13 at 11 a.m. The race for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series is this coming Friday July 111th with the inaugural Alberta Has Energy 300 at Edmonton International Raceway in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.

  • Juan Pablo Montoya returns to victory lane in Pocono 400 fueled by Sonoco

Juan Pablo Montoya returns to victory lane in Pocono 400 fueled by Sonoco

For the first time since 2000, Juan Pablo Montoya would return to Verizon IndyCar Series victory lane after taking the lead with four laps to go when Tony Kanaan would have pit for fuel.

“First of all, I want to thank Verizon, IndyCar, PPG – everyone that supports this car,” Montoya commented in victory lane. “I want to thank Roger (Penske) for believing me. He believed I could do it and here we are and it’s awesome.”

Starting on pole for the race, Montoya stayed in the top-five throughout the whole race and put himself in a position to win when he passed Will Power for the lead with 34 laps to go. The pair made slight contact in the process, breaking a small piece off the left-side of the front wing.

“Just a little more understeer but you’re either going to do it, or do it and I had to do it as that was the winning move,” Montoya said.

Montoya then led till his green flag pit stop with 14 laps to go, returning to the lead when the cycle completed. It marks the 15th career victory for the Columbian.

“Patience was the key for me. You have to be patient,” he said. “Days just like this if you do everything right, it’ll come to you.”

For Roger Penske, he’d be treated to a one-two finish as Helio Castroneves came across the finish line in the second spot.

“It’s great for Juan,” Penske commented. “All three cars did well. It’s a great day for our sponsors. Its also a great day for points with RHR (Ryan Hunter-Reay) having problems.”

As a result of finishing second, Castroneves gained ground in the championship points, now tied with teammate Power for the lead.

“We made some changes and copied some of my teammates’ set-up and it worked,” Castroneves said.

Rookie Carlos Munoz finished third for Andretti Autosport, followed by Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Ryan Briscoe and Scott Dixon. Simon Pagenaud finished sixth, followed by Mikhail Aleshin, Josef Newgarden, Marco Andretti, Will Power and Tony Kanaan. Kanaan would lead the most laps throughout the day during the middle portion of the event.

Will Power had been in contention all day long throughout the race, however would have to serve a pass-thru penalty with 37 laps to go as a result of pulling a block on Castroneves down the frontstaightaway.

“I think that’s up to the officials,” Penske said of the call between his drivers. “Its obviously a shame for them. But these guys are racers and will battle hard.”

“I actually let him go. I went wide and touch the brakes,” Power commented. “I don’t know what to say. Another penalty, another day gone and the commentators probably gave me a good rep.”

“Well, that’s one thing about our team – there’s no team orders and we race hard and push for it,” Castroneves said. “I’m not the one to make the call for it. Obviously, we’re pushing hard and fighting for the championship and its not my call.”

The 400 mile race featured only one caution with 40 laps to go when Graham Rahal got into the wall. As a result, this race goes down as the third fastest IndyCar race in series history.

  • Andrew Ranger scores pole for Jiffy Lube 100 at Circuit ICAR

Andrew Ranger scores pole for Jiffy Lube 100 at Circuit ICAR

After dominating the previous two events at Circuit ICAR, Andrew Ranger kept the positive momentum going as he would score the pole for Sunday’s Jiffy Luke 100. Ranger lapped the airport-based road course in 95.956 seconds (79.274 mph) during qualifying for his 14th career pole, tying him with J.R. Fitzpatrick for the NCAT all-time record.

He’ll be joined on the front row by fellow Quebec driver Marc-Antoine Camirand, who is making his third career Canadian Tire Series start. Camirand posted a sixth place finish last fall at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.

2013 Rookie of the Year Alex Guenette will start third, followed by L.P. Dumoulin and Alex Labbe. Kerry Micks qualified sixth, followed by Elie Arseneau, Alex Tagliani, Gary Klutt and Jason Hathaway. Hathaway comes into this weekend looking for his second straight win, following Autodrome Chaudiere.

Defending series champion Scott Steckly qualified 11th, with points leader J.R. Fitzpatrick in 12th. Fitzpatrick won the season opener on the CTMP road course back in May.

Sunday’s Jiffy Lube 100 is scheduled to take the green flag at 2:35 p.m. EST.

  • MONTOYA TAKES VERIZON P1 AWARD FOR POCONO INDYCAR 500

MONTOYA TAKES VERIZON P1 AWARD FOR POCONO INDYCAR 500

LONG POND, Pa. (Saturday, July 5, 2014) — Juan Pablo Montoya was a standout in the late-afternoon qualifying session as driver after driver took turns at shattering Marco Andretti’s year-old Pocono Raceway speed records.

The final participant in single-car qualifications for the Pocono INDYCAR 500 fueled by Sunoco broke the one- and two-lap track records to earn his first Verizon P1 Award of the season and 15th of his Indy car career.

Montoya recorded a first lap of 223.920 mph and a two-lap average of 223.871 mph on the 2.5-mile tri-oval in the No. 2 PPG Team Penske. The previous two-lap average record was 221.273 mph, which came in 2013 at Indy car racing’s return to Pocono Raceway after a 24-year absence. Denny Hamlin holds the NASCAR Cup Series record of 181.415 mph, set on June 6.

NBCSN will televise the 200-lap race — the middle round of the Triple Crown series — at noon (ET) July 6. The 500-mile races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Pocono Raceway and Auto Club Speedway on Aug. 30 carry double points. Will Power, the championship front-runner who will join Montoya and rookie Carlos Munoz on the front row for the three-wide start, has a 39-point lead over Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves entering Round 11 of 18.

Montoya is the eighth different Verizon P1 Award winner this season.

Montoya’s last Indy car pole came at Surfers Paradise in October 2000. He earned the pole for the August 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Pocono.

“It’s the luck of the draw, but the big thing was we had good balance,” said Montoya, who returned to Indy car racing this season after 14 years competing in Formula One and stock car racing.

“Am I back? Well, I’m getting there. I feel like I’m getting there every week. We keep working harder and keep finding speed and more results. So it’s exciting. I think we’re going in the right direction.

“(The track is) so different (from NASCAR). We run wide open all the way around here. I think the average speed is 30 or 40 miles per hour faster than we do in a Cup car. It’s fast.”

Takuma Sato (222.798 mph), Andretti (222.715) and James Hinchcliffe (222.544) will occupy Row 2.

  • Gary Elliott hits 700th consecutive start at Sunset, looking for better run at Capital City

Gary Elliott hits 700th consecutive start at Sunset, looking for better run at Capital City

This past weekend at Sunset Speedway, Canadian motorsports history was recognized as Gary Elliott made his 700th consecutive start behind the wheel. In a combination of Canadian Vintage Modified events, Late Model events and Hanover Holiday OSCAAR Modified events, Elliott hasn’t missed a night of racing since June 5th, 1987.

“First, I thank God for bringing all of these things together,” Elliott stated in his post-event press release. “My family for their support and dedication, my crew and friends who at times stayed up all night to make sure we got to the next race. Thanks to our fantastic sponsors, especially Quaker State for being with us for this incredible streak and long before. To all our suppliers, engine builders, and repair shops for making sure our parts and repairs were ready for the next race….and to many who gave me the parts, the car, or engine, and with grace said I could pay later. To the race track promoters and owners who supported me, we say thank you.”

In celebration of the milestone, Elliott gave away 400 Frisbees to the fans in the stands, as well as four kids bikes to lucky winners of the draws.

Unfortunately, Gary Elliott didn’t have the night that he was looking for at Sunset Speedway as both days this past weekend, the veteran struggled as a result of steering issues on his No. 36 Lincoln Electric Modified. Elliott posted that the problem was fixed and he is set to head to Capital City Speedway this weekend.

While it marks the inaugural trip to the 3/8 mile for the Hanover Holiday OSCAAR Modifieds, it also marks the first trip for Elliott despite the numerous years of experience behind the wheel. Elliott will be looking for his first career OSCAAR victory following a second place finish at Barrie Speedway last month. The victory would mark no surprise based on the speed that Elliott has shown already behind the wheel of the modified, and has previous open-wheel experience in running with the Canadian Vintage Modifieds.

Shawn Chenoweth to Return to OSCAAR Super Late Model Competition

CAMBRIDGE, ON- After a near two-year absence, Pro Late Model standout Shawn Chenoweth will return to the OSCAAR Super Late Model Tour for a limited schedule in 2014.

“They just can’t keep us out. We’re coming back”, smiles Chenoweth, “our Pro Late Model program is as good as it’s ever been, and we feel right now is the perfect time to take on a new challenge”

Chenoweth will continue to field a Pro Late Model and Thunder Car through the remaining rounds of the well-received APC Six Pack Series at Delaware Speedway and Flamboro Speedway.

“Our whole team loves the APC Six Pack Series concept, and we wanted to make sure we supported it completely”, explains Chenoweth. “We’ve had a couple of awesome runs in the first two rounds, and we’re fortunate enough to be leading the points with four races left. It would be silly to turn our back on it”

“We still have a full schedule planned for the Thunder Car to close out 2014”, continues Chenoweth. “That car works awesome at Flamboro”

The second-generation competitor has acquired a Jeff Hanley-built chassis, from former OSCAAR part-timer Paul Law, which he intends to debut later this season.

“When we were mulling over the decision to get back into OSCAAR, we knew we wanted a Jeff Hanley chassis”, says Chenoweth. “As far as craftsmanship goes, you can’t beat one. They’re works of art. Beautiful cars. Paul [Law] had one available, and we jumped at the opportunity”

The reigning Flamboro Pro Late Model titlist will return to the tour with full support from his sponsor and confidante Mike Schmidt.

“Shawn can’t stop talking about this Super Late Model endeavor. I haven’t seen him this excited in a long time”, says Schmidt, the leader of London Recreational Racing. “When Shawn sets his mind to something, he has a certain energy to him. It’s infectious”

“The OSCAAR tour is one of the most competitive divisions in the province right now”, continues Schmidt, “and I’m as excited as Shawn is to see where he stacks up against the current crop of talent”

Chenoweth’s newly acquired ride is in the process of receiving a number of minor upgrades, and is slated for an August debut, before embarking on a full tour schedule in 2015.

Shawn Chenoweth’s re-entry into the OSCAAR Super Late Model Tour will be made possible thanks to support from London Recreational, Bennett GM, KR Communications, Midas of Orangeville, Castrol Edge, Transaxle Truck Parts, Hitman Hotrods, Wilson Ponds, Graybar, McColl Racing Enterprises, Innerkip Plumbing and Heating, ProWraps and Automotive Truck & Tire.

INDIANAPOLIS (Wednesday, July 2, 2014) – INDYCAR announced today post-event infractions from the Shell and Pennzoil Grand Prix of Houston Race 1, which was held June 28 at Houston’s NRG Park.

INDYCAR officials have fined Dale Coyne Racing for a pair of technical violations on its No. 18 Verizon IndyCar Series entry driven by Carlos Huertas. The entrant was found to have violated Rule 14.6.4.18 (Rear Wing Height) and Rule 14.7.2 (Fuel Cell Capacity) of the Verizon IndyCar Series rulebook. The team was fined a total of $10,000 – $5,000 for each infraction. INDYCAR officials determined that the infractions did not impact the finishing order of the race or final position of the offending team.

The members may contest the imposition of the penalty pursuant to the procedures and timelines detailed in the review and appeal procedures of the Verizon IndyCar Series rulebook.
