  • Canada’s Best Racing Team partners with Leafs and Steven Mathews

Canada’s Best Racing Team partners with Leafs and Steven Mathews

Joey McColm announced via Race Time Radio earlier this month that Canada’s Best Racing Team (CBRT) has formed some new partnerships with Parts Source, the Toronto Maple Leafs (TML) and Steven Mathews.

McColm announced in February at the Canadian Motorsports Expo that he will be running the full 2014 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule for the first time since 2010.

“We’ve had a great winter here,” McColm said. “Since we’ve known that we were going to do this in December, it’s been non-stop work. We’re ready. I’m pumped for the green flag at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park and we’re ready to race now. I can’t wait to get out there.”

McColm revealed on Monday night that his No. 25 Dodge will carry the TML colors for the May 18th season opener at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. This comes as a result of a partnership between CBRT, TML and Parts Source.

“It’s incredible,” McColm commented. “I grew up and wearing Maple Leaf jerseys. When this partnership came about and they said to go with it, we designed the car to look like the jersey and I can’t wait to be out there racing with the jersey on the car.”

McColm also announced that Steven Mathews will be driving a second car for the team at both CTMP races. The car will be numbered 87 with sponsorship from TSC Stores. Mathews is a regular of the Canadian Tire Series, having made 24 starts over the past five years. The New Liskeard, Ontario native made four starts last year, resulting in a pair of top-five finishes, including a third-place finish at Delaware Speedway.

As part of trying to connect with fans, CBRT is encouraging fans to use the hashtags #CBRT25 and #CBRT87 via twitter and Instagram. They’ve also created a social hub on their website – .

“It’s been a lot fun,” McColm noted. “We’ve been sharing this with everybody through our social channels. We’ve started an open line of communication with the fans, other teams, sponsors and media. We just wanted everybody to see and know and get a feel for this team and grow with us.”

Discussion should pick up across the social media channels as the 2014 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season kicks off on May 18th at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.

  • Jacques Villeneuve passes Orientation Refresher Test for Indianapolis 500

Jacques Villeneuve passes Orientation Refresher Test for Indianapolis 500

In preparation for the 98th running of the Indianapolis 500, Jacques Villeneuve took part in the Orientation Refresher Test. While Villeneuve is not a rookie, he was required to take the test due to this being his first IndyCar event since 1995.

The veteran successfully passed the Orientation test as he demonstrated that he could handle the car, while completing the second and third speed phases of the rookie test.

“It took a while to get there. The first few laps were surprising because it felt like I was going fast and I looked and it was 180 (mph),” the 1995 Indianapolis 500 champion said. “I thought, ‘There’s still a long way to go,’ and then 190. And another 10 laps I started getting in the rhythm, and once you start going flat all around it becomes easy. I think your brain, your vision just needs to get used to driving at speed.”

Before rain began to fall on the 2.5-mile speedway, the Canadian recorded 83 laps in the No. 5 Dollar General sponsored car for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, with his best lap being 217.742 mph.

“When I came here last time, I had already driven on ovals at high speed,” Villeneuve added. “It felt crazy fast back then and it felt crazy fast today. We weren’t trimmed out yet, but there was no point with the (25 mph) wind and the track was very green. At the end, we even managed to work on the mechanical set-up of the car and that made it nicer.”

Villeneuve’s next laps on track will be during the first practice session for the event, which is scheduled for May 11th, followed by qualifications on May 17th and 18th. If Villeneuve qualifies for the race, he’ll set a record for the biggest gap between starts held by Cy Marshall and Roland Free between 1930 and 1947.

  • “An Environmentalist Who Races”: Generosity Helps Münter Enter “Blackfish” Car for Venturini Motorsports

“An Environmentalist Who Races”: Generosity Helps Münter Enter “Blackfish” Car for Venturini Motorsports

Concord, NC (April 29, 2014) – Conservation as a topic in racing circles usually centers on elements crucial between the green and checkered flags, like fuel or tires. For Leilani Münter, though, conservation plays a greater role not only this week at Talladega Superspeedway, but every day of her life.

Joining Venturini Motorsports in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards for the second time, Münter enters Saturday’s International Motorsports Hall of Fame 200 in a No. 55 Toyota promoting “Blackfish,” a 2013 Magnolia Pictures documentary centered on the consequences of keeping killer whales in captivity. The film features Tilikum, a bull orca involved in three human deaths since being captured for theme park life over 30 years ago.

For Münter, who graduated from the University of California-San Diego with a biology degree, racing is important, but directing attention outside the car to environmental issues is paramount.

“I feel like I’m an environmentalist who races rather than a racer who does environmental work,” Münter said from New York City, where last week she attended the Tribeca Film Festival. She was there to support a new documentary titled “6” in which she will appear related to endangered species and mass extinction, as well as participate in a public question-and-answer session.

“I’m a tree hugger. I’m a rainwater-collecting, vegan, solar panel-using, electric car driver. I really fit into that role, and then there’s this weird exception that I drive a race car. But I realize that the race car is what gives me the ability to express these environmental issues to people. You don’t change any minds by preaching to people who believe in the same thing that you do. The only way you win people over is to go and speak to the people who aren’t into these ideas yet. I like to get the conversation going, and the race car serves a great purpose for me.”

The sight of Münter in a conservation film-themed car will be familiar, as “The Cove” adorned her car at Daytona two years ago. In the time leading to that race, Münter was active in her efforts to conserve. She led a campaign to light the top of the Empire State Building red to raise awareness for the dolphin slaughter depicted in the film, traveled to Japan and survived Typhoon Talas to document the slaughter in Tajii, and welcomed key personnel from the film to the track to meet fans and spread the message before the race.

Despite a heartbreaking 36th-place finish after a blown tire, spin, and motor problems, she felt her activism had been positive, inspiring her for another run in 2014. She said many fans of “The Cove” asked her if she would race a “Blackfish” car. After she received permission from the film’s producer, director, and studio, her effort to crowd-fund another car was on.

But after her fundraising efforts only turned up an initial $7,500, Münter was at an impasse. That was until she encountered Sam Simon, a key animal rights activist who happens to be the co-creator of TV’s “The Simpsons” and a key contributor to many other productions of the last 35 years.

“I didn’t really think we were going to go to Talladega, but then I was guest on Sam Simon’s radio show – he’s a huge animal rights activist, very passionate – and he spontaneously offered to cover the rest of the car’s costs,” she said.

Simon is living with terminal cancer but plans to join Münter and support “Blackfish” at Talladega this weekend. To recognize Simon’s important contribution, Münter flew to Los Angeles to thank Simon several weeks ago.

“We would not be running Talladega if it weren’t for Sam Simon,” she said. “I’m incredibly honored, because Sam has terminal cancer and the fact that he’s flying from L.A. to cheer me on at Talladega makes me feel honored. It’s hard to put that into words, but he has limited time left on the planet and to be giving a whole day of that to me is amazing.”

Between Simon’s generous donation at the start of April and the ARCA test at Talladega two weeks later, though, Münter continued to travel, raising awareness and filming “6,” the forthcoming production by the makers of “The Cove.” In that film, Münter is, fittingly, the getaway driver for a team examining the harm of endangered species.

Because of her travels, Münter was unable to visit the Venturini shop for a seat fitting. But once she got settled in to test at Talladega, that “weird exception” proved its mettle on track.

At one point the first morning, Münter was only 0.001 second from the top of the chart, proving her Toyota was among the fastest in single-car runs. Even after drafting practice took over, she ended last week’s two-day test fourth with a fastest lap of 52.223 seconds (183.367 mph).

Since then, she’s had the opportunity to visit the Venturini shop in North Carolina to truly adjust to her car for next weekend’s race.

“Now we’ve got the car dialed in, now I’m comfortable, and now I can reach the pedals,” she said. “I think we’re going to be really, really good. I’m interested to see how the drafting goes in qualifying, as I’ve never seen that before or qualified that way. It’s very interesting, and all of our cars should be up front.”

Indeed, added excitement is the expectation for ARCA qualifying at Talladega. A new series procedure at the track will feature group qualifying, with cars categorized by practice session speeds, instead of one car against the clock at a time. Having never raced at Talladega, the qualifying draft should serve as good practice for Saturday morning’s race.

“We’re going to be in big packs, long lines, and trains of cars, which always makes it really exciting, but that also sets us up for disaster at the same time,” Münter said. “If one person makes one mistake, you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time at no fault of your own. What I’m really hoping is that team-wise, the Venturini cars will qualify well, up front, and we can stay up front so the big one that’s coming happens behind me rather than in front of me.”

Münter will join full-time Venturini Motorsports drivers Justin Boston and John Wes Townley in ARCA’s 52nd race at Talladega. She’s hopeful that no matter her result this weekend, she’s able to promote the message of animal rights and everyday conservation.

“Every time something is on my car, it’s something I feel really deeply about. I love driving, and I absolutely want to win Talladega, but I love it that if I win Talladega, I’m doing it in a really cool car with a message that makes people think.”

Practice will take place from 9-11 a.m. before Menards Pole Qualifying at 3:35 p.m. on Friday. The race will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday. All times are Central Daylight, meaning the race will air live at 11 a.m. Eastern Saturday on Fox Sports 1.

Special Feature: The newly released trailer for “6”, Münter’s next film project, is now available for viewing at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrw-fVADtv0

“I’ve never had anybody that’s watched the films not be moved to do something, whether it’s as small as putting the trailer on your Facebook page or sharing it with your friends and family,” Münter said.

  • Ryan Hunter-Reay score repeat win in Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama

Ryan Hunter-Reay score repeat win in Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama

After a two and a half hour rain delay, the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama would get underway and quickly, Ryan Hunter-Reay showed he was the driver to beat in the 100-minute time limited race. Hunter-Reay took the lead on lap 16 when pole sitter Will Power got off course in the wet conditions. Hunter-Reay then pitted a couple laps later, though would get  the lead back at he end of the pit cycle before cruising to victory.

“I’ve been anxious (to compete) since we left Long Beach,” Hunter-Reay said. “What a dream to have a car like that at that distance. Great to get the No. 28 DHL car with a Honda at a Honda (sponsored) race into Victory Circle. (Long Beach) should have been a great result, but we got it today.”

For Hunter-Reay, it marks his 12th career win and second straight on the 17-turn road course. It also marks Hunter-Reay’s first win of the season after contending for the win in the first two races of the season.

Teammate Marco Andretti finished second to give Andretti Autosport a 1-2 finish.

“I’m really proud of this whole team,” team owner Michael Andretti commented. “Marco (Andretti) did a hell of a job. He drove his way to the front there and Ryan (Hunter-Reay drove a perfect race. Feels good after the last one for sure.”

Andretti drove hard throughout the second half of the event, including an impressive pass on Will Power through turn three. It marks Andretti’s first podium finish of the year after a pair of poor showings on the first two street courses of the year.

“Heck of a team effort,” Andretti commented. “I’m so proud of Andretti Autosport. I’m really proud of how we can adapt to different conditions. Not only the drivers, but the teams. They gave us good cars.”

Chip Ganassi Racing driver Scott Dixon rounded out the podium for his first podium of the year.

“It was definitely an interesting race with the weather mixed in there,” Dixon commented. “Hopefully we put on a good show for everybody. We were trying. We seemed to burn up the front tires quickly. The same thing happened on the wets after Helio (Castroneves) jumped the start and passed a couple of cars which is typical, I guess. We had to fight back and had a good pit stop exchange. (Will) Power pitted early and we were able to put down some good lap and gain some spots. We just didn’t have enough for Marco. He did a hell of a job, so congrats to Andretti for a 1-2 finish.”

Simon Pagenaud finished fourth, followed by Will Power. Power holds on to the points lead, 18 points ahead of Hunter-Reay.

“The Verizon Chevrolet was really fast on the wet tires and I just got in trouble in turn 5,” Power commented. “I keep moving my braking point further and further into the corners and I got caught going too far. It’s tough to not push past the limits with wet patches everywhere. We really didn’t have the pace in the dry anyway, but that sure didn’t help our cause when I went off course. We may have just been a bit heavy on downforce. Still a fifth-place finish today and we have the points lead going into the month of May.”

Justin Wilson finished sixth, followed by James Hinchcliffe, Josef Newgarden, Tony Kanaan and Charlie Kimball.

The wet conditions weren’t friendly to all the drivers as many found trouble early in the event.

On lap 21, rookie Mikhail Aleshin spun in turn five after contact from Sebastian Bourdias. Aleshin would then run into more trouble later in the race, as he brought out hte final caution of the race due to heavy contact with the tire barrier in turn 14.

“I was overtaking cars one by one which was exactly what I set out to do,” Aleshin commented. “I had a really tough battle with Bourdais and everything was fair until he took me off the track in Turn 5. The car stalled and it took two laps for me to get restarted and join the race again. Honestly, I was really upset with being a lap down and I was pushing as hard as I possibly could to make up every bit of ground. I pushed too hard in Turn 13 and touched the wet area on the track, which sent me straight into the wall.”

On lap 27 on the restart, Juan Pablo Montoya got off track , going down a couple laps in the process.

“We had a good car in the wet,” Montoya commented. “I thought it did a pretty good job in the wet. We had trouble with the radio, so I tried to plug myself back in while driving. So that was fun. I had a good restart on cold tires. We were going through the esses, and I was right behind the No. 9 car (Scott Dixon) . He had a big moment, and I lifted then ended up having a bigger moment myself. I went in and I kind of referenced and measured with the wet, and I did the same thing I was doing in wet.  He lifted more than I expected and I had to lift a lot more and it started tail slapping. After that, something broke in the car..I don’t know what happened.”

Rookie Carlos Huertas also ran into trouble as he got off course on lap 31.

With a successful three races to start the season, the stars of the Verizon IndyCar Series head into the all important month of May, set to tackle the first ever Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 10th.

  • Will Power wins pole for Toyota Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama

Will Power wins pole for Toyota Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama

Will Power would pick up exactly where he left off as he would win the pole for hte Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. Power would get around the 17-turn course in one minute and 8.3120 seconds to score his first pole of the season and third pole in five starts at Barber Motorsports Park. It also marks the 33rd career pole award for Power, tieing a break with Michael Andretti for eighth all-time.

“It’s going to be a tough race,” the Australian commented. “When it goes green, these temperatures are going to be very physical. There will be a lot of traffic and a lot of marbles so we’ll do everything we can to get the win. I love this place. It’s an awesome track. Very technical. Got to be fast. Got to be great. Definitely going to be a good race.”

Power has started off the 2014 season as he won the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, before finishing second in Long Beach to Mike Conway.

James Hinchcliffe would qualify second, matching his season-best start of the season (Long Beach) and his best Barber start (2012). Hinchcliffe is hoping for a good race this weekend after being involved in the multi-car incident at Long Beach while running in the top five.

“Very happy for the United Fiber & Data boys and everybody at Andretti Autosport – all the cars have been quick; having four cars starting in the top 10, that speaks volumes for the team,” Hinchcliffe commented. “Second race in a row starting from the front so we’re looking forward to tomorrow. With the heat that we are going to face tomorrow and the tires going off the way they are, we figured either having one more run on that set, or a set with one less run on it was going to play into our hands tomorrow. We watched some other guys go out and we weren’t sure what to expect, a bit nervous on the timing stand there but we held our second place. And hopefully with one less heat cycle on the tires we’ll be in a better position tomorrow.”

Hinchcliffe’s teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay, who dominated the race at Long Beach before that incident, qualified third for his second consecutive top-five start at Barber. Hunter-Reay is the defending pole sitter and race winner at Barber.

“Starting third is two shy of where we want to be but, it’s a good start,” Hunter-Reay said. “We can go to work from there and can definitely win this thing from third. It was a tight qualifying session today – we knew it was going to be. With the level of drivers and teams we have involved, it was going to be a fight to the very end. We tried it and came up short, but overall I think third is good for the No. 28 DHL Honda.”

After contending for the win last weekend, Josef Newgarden qualified fourth, matching his carer-best qualifying performance, which was two weeks ago at Long Beach. On board with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing for another season, Newgarden looks to be finding his stride as he continues to get stronger with each lap on the track.

“If you’re quick in all three practice sessions, it bodes better for the weekend. For us we found something that clicks better on the race car and for me,” Newgarden said. “It’s hard to do in a small group. We don’t want to make any excuses, but we’ve just been getting better as a team. Everyone works together better. I’ve been doing a better job of helping the team find what we need. That’s crucial. I feel good about it. Think we have a better package than we’ve had around here in the past.”

Scott Dixon qualified fifth as Chip Ganassi Racing looks for their first win of the 2014 season, followed by Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves. They are the only two drivers to qualify Firestone Fast Six for every race at Barber.

The Verizon IndyCar Series teams will get a morning warm-up session before the 90 lap race, which is set to start 2:12 p.m. local time.

  • Ray Courtemanche Jr. to run full NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule

Ray Courtemanche Jr. to run full NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule

Ray Courtemanche Jr. announced officially earlier this month that he will run the full NASCAR Canadian Tire Series in 2014. Courtemanche ran a limited schedule in 2011 and 2012, before tackling the whole schedule in 2013.

Courtemanche Jr. will be backed by La Cité de Mirabel Inc. for the second straight season. The Quebec native and business partner Daniel Proulx also announced that Blackshape Aircraft will be on board for 2014.

In an effort to improve his on-track results, Courtemanche has partnered with Scott Steckly and 22 Racing. Steckly’s team will prepare the cars that Courtemanche will drive in 2014, as well as Alex Tagliani’s cars. Steckly is a three-time NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Champion.

“We have learned a lot over the past three seasons, which will certainly help the La Cité de Mirable Inc./Blackshape Aircraft effort over the season,” he commented. “Having Alex Tagliani also running under the 22 Racing banner will help develop my personal driving performance, another plus on our way to closing in on the lead pack in every race.”

Courtemanche finished 12th in points last season with his best finish coming at Barrie Speedway with an 11th. The partnership with 22 Racing should bring top notch cars to Courtemanche’s program, and as a result help the Quebec native notch his first career NCAT top 10 finish.

  • Ryan Hunter-Reay leads Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama Practice

Ryan Hunter-Reay leads Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama Practice

Ryan Hunter-Reay is continuing exactly where he left off. The defending Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama  winner led the pair of practices on Friday with a time of one minute and 8.7836 seconds.

“The track was good – this is quite a bit hotter than we’re used to here at Barber,” Hunter-Reay commented. “It takes some getting used to and the track conditions have certainly changed, but we’ve tested here quite a bit – we tested here in the off-season and we definitely can’t get enough of Barber. It’s going to be a little bit hotter (tomorrow) and the track temp is going to go up, so we’ll look at what we did her last year preparing for qualifying. The Andretti Autosport car is great right now, we’re not where we want to be yet, but I expect to see all four of us up front (tomorrow).”

Hunter-Reay has shown speed so far this year in the first two events to start the season as he finished second at St. Petersburg and dominated at Long Beach before contact with Josef Newgarden took him out of the event.

Sebastian Bourdais timed in second quickest, backing up the speed that he showed two weeks ago at Long Beach.

“We know how slick this place can be when it gets hot and how much tire degradation can be a factor,” Bourdais commented post-practice. “We come here (in March) and test for two days and it’s drizzling and it’s British weather in the 50s, no wind, and the track is awesome – and the car feels great and it’s super fast. And then we come back and the track is 125 degrees, and it’s gusty, and you’re like, ‘Is this the same car?’ You’re two seconds slower and you’re P1. And that’s interesting.

“I think it’s very difficult to anticipate what might happen; the track might not pick up any speed at all and it’s getting very slick out there. We’ll see what happens.”

Josef Newgarden was third quickest, followed by current points leader Will Power and James Hinchcliffe. Hinchcliffe is hoping to not repeat last year’s Barber experience as he ran into issues early and was stuck in one of hte run off spots most of the race without at toe back to pit road.

“We were here for spring training and had a little bit of an idea of what to expect this weekend, of course the conditions are a bit different now which has a huge effect on the track. The team did a great job though, obviously Ryan (Hunter-Reay) was quickest both session,” Hinchcliffe commented. “I’m happy with the United Fiber & Data Honda, but still a little bit of work to do for tomorrow.”

Past race winner Helio Castroneves was sixth quickest, followed by Marco Andretti, Juan Pablo Montoya, Scott Dixon and Simon Pagenaud. Long Beach race winner Mike Conway was 16th quickest.

Graham Rahal’s struggles continue as he was only 19th quickest and got off course after contact with the tire barrier in turn 15.

The Verizon IndyCar Series teams will get one more practice in the morning on Saturday with qualifying scheduled for 2 p.m. local time.

  • Frank Montagny to run Grand Prix of Indianapolis for Andretti Autosport

Frank Montagny to run Grand Prix of Indianapolis for Andretti Autosport

Andretti Autosport announced earlier this week that Frank Montagny will drive the No. 26 Honda-powered car for the inaugural Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 10th. Montagny is driving the same entry in which AA has entered into the Indianapolis 500 with Kurt Busch behind the wheel.

“I am very happy to be back with Andretti Autosport; I have already felt ‘at home’ during my visits,” Montagny said per team press release. “Participating in the Grand Prix of Indianapolis in the temple of motorsport that is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a true moment of happiness.”

Montagny made his Verizon IndyCar Series debut in 2008, finishing second at Long Beach with Forsythe/Pettit Racing. Driver Jake Ruggles dedicating his April 26th race to the Autism Society of NC and their upcoming Dine 4 Autism event

(Kannapolis, NC; April 24, 2014) Thirteen-year-old Allison Legacy Race Series driver Jake Ruggles is dedicating his race this weekend in Hickory, NC to the Autism Society of North Carolina. Jake, whose younger brother Ryan has Autism, is a long-time supporter of multiple Autism-awareness charities.

In a race a few weeks ago Jake added ‘Autism Speaks’, ‘Ryan’s Race’ and puzzle piece decals to his race car to dedicate the race to his brother in honor of Autism Awareness month. He is now using this weekend’s race at the Hickory Motor Speedway to specifically promote an April 29th fundraising event being held by The Triangle Chapters of the Autism Society of North Carolina.

The event, Dine 4 Autism, is designed to raise awareness as well as funds. It will feature a variety of Triangle restaurants, from morning coffee shops to mid-day sandwich cafes, to full dining establishments and cupcake shops. The Triangle Chapters of the Autism Society of North Carolina is hosting this fundraiser in culmination with International Autism Awareness Month.

Jake and his family, who are also his race team, are from Kannapolis, NC. He is a multi-time winner in North Carolina Quarter Midget Association (NCQMA) competition. He recently began his second year racing in the Allison Legacy Race Series after winning the series Rookie of the Year title in 2013. Jake and his father will be at Tyler’s Taphouse in Apex for the fundraiser, signing autographs and speaking with customers about what the Autism Society of NC does. “I’m excited to reach out to people about Autism Awareness and help spread awareness through my racing on and off the track.” Jake recently commented. “I am looking forward to meeting people at Tyler’s Taphouse for the Dine 4 Autism charity event on April 29th.”

Leslie Welch, Leader Wake County Chapter, Autism Society of North Carolina, stated: “We are thrilled to have ‘Ryan’s Race’ car join us for Dine 4 Autism.  We hope that all the local race fans come out to meet Jake Ruggles, driver for Jake Ruggles Racing and Steve Ruggles, Team Owner, get an autograph and support the Autism Society of North Carolina’s Triangle Chapters.”

Tracy Hines Targets Becoming a Member of the 1,000 Club in USAC

NEW CASTLE, Ind.—April 24, 2014—  The United States Automobile Club (USAC) has been sanctioned races for nearly 60 years and only one driver in that span has reached the 1,000 National feature event start plateau. That was Dave Darland earlier this season. Tracy Hines looks to become the second driver to reach this historic mark this weekend, as he races in his home state of Indiana, with the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series. Hines heads to the track with 998-career USAC National starts under his belt.

The pair of races kicks off on Friday, April 25, at Gas City (Ind.) I-69 Speedway, followed by a visit to Tri-State (Ind.) Speedway on Saturday, April 26. The Spring Showdown at Tri-State Speedway will be co-sanctioned by the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series and the Midwest Sprint Car Series (MSCS).

“This milestone is more of an accomplishment to every car owner and all the sponsors that allowed me to reach this mark, without them I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this,” said Hines, who pilots The Carolina Nut Company DRC. “Reaching the 1,000 race mark means that I have been lucky enough to have people that believed in me and allowed me to do this for a living.”

Hines made a total of three starts at Gas City in 2013. He finished a season-best second with the Honda USAC National Midget Series during Indiana Midget Week. Hines raced twice with the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series at the quarter-mile last year, finishing eighth in the spring event.

The versatile driver also competed at Gas City last year, during Indiana Sprint Week. Hines has won twice with the series at Gas City in his career, with the most recent coming in 2010.

Hines took to the quarter-mile at Tri-State Speedway twice in 2013, with the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series. He finished eighth in the Haubstadt Hustler in September, which was a co-sanctioned event with MSCS. Hines also raced at Tri-State Speedway in May, finishing 13th. The native of New Castle, Ind., has one-career Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series win at the track, with that coming in his title-winning season of 2002.

Hines enters this weekend’s action sixth in points with the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series. He has three top-10 finishes in four starts. Hines came home third last weekend at the famed Eldora Speedway in Ohio, which was his second podium finish of the 2014 campaign.
