  • Justin Wilson looks to build on last year’s success this coming season

Justin Wilson looks to build on last year’s success this coming season

While most IndyCar drivers have taken their first laps of the season behind the wheel throughout testing, Justin Wilson is just getting the opportunity to do that recently due to healing from injuries sustained in the season finale at Auto Club Speedway.

“It was great to get back in an IndyCar, get back up to speed with everything,” Wilson commented. “My first experience with the Honda twin turbo.  I was really pleased with how that performed and how that drove. Generally just working away on things, trying to get used to the new personnel.  Had a lot of changes at Dale Coyne Racing.  Working with Michael Cannon, my new race engineer.  He’s got a lot of experience.  That’s great.

“We’re just comparing notes, trying things out.  Seeing what works, what didn’t for each of us.  I think it was a good test.  Hopefully there’s more to come tomorrow.  We’ll hit the track tomorrow and try and get a bit more speed, try and be faster. ”

Except for the unfortunate incident in the season finale, Wilson had a solid 2013 season as he finished sixth in points last year. Wilson said they weren’t expecting that success last year, but now they have to build on it.

“There’s a lot of things that got to happen,” he commented. “We have to make sure we don’t make any mistakes.  Trying to get the most out of the car in qualifying, trying to get the car to work over a full stint in the race, that’s just part of it.”

Wilson hopes to kick off the season strong, though also says there will be lots of work involved in learning the new personnel on the team and not making mistakes.

“It’s easy to go down a path and get trapped and lost.  That’s our focus,” he added. “Hopefully we can build on that and win races.  That was the one thing last year, we came close to winning a couple races.  There were a few races that something happened and I thought, We should have won that one.  We didn’t.  Want to change that around this year and at least win one, if not multiple.”

There will be difficulty in making sure to stay focused, though, as there are going to be weekends that offer a limited amount of practice time. Wilson says he feels confident his team can make sure they’re fast off the truck due to the work they’ve put in and learning from past experiences.

“The key thing now is Michael has a lot of experience over the last two years with the teams he’s worked with.  Then I’ve got my experiences.  They’re quite different.  Trying to pick apart which bits to go with, not make a mess of it,” Wilson commented. “It’s so easy to choose the wrong items, say, It’s obvious this car needs this front spring.  It may look like it on paper, but it’s not obvious.

“The car has to work with every component to work properly.  You can end up with two very different setups producing the same lap time and doing it a completely different times.  You can’t say this, this and this is going to make a fast racecar. ”

Wilson’s crash last year that resulted in a back injury also has played a part going into this season as IndyCar has make changes to the driver’s compartment.

“I think it’s been positive,” Wilson commented on the results. “It should be a lot better this year.  There’s still things in the pipeline they’re talking about doing.  They need more data on that before they implement it. I think it’s only going to help.  The key is getting the car safe and safer, the safest racecar possible.

“It takes up a little bit of room in the cockpit.  It’s maybe, from what I’ve seen, eighth of an inch each side.  Doesn’t sound a lot, but it actually is.  This car is designed very straight-sided.  There’s not a lot of elbow room.  When you sit in the car, your elbows come in and almost touch your ribs.  When you start bringing it in an eighth inch each side, I don’t have a lot of room left anyway.  It’s made it a little bit tricky, but it’s a compromise you have to make.”

  • Enfinger Explains Remarkable Daytona Victory

    Enfinger Explains Remarkable Daytona Victory

Grant Enfinger notched his third career ARCA Racing Series victory on Saturday at Daytona International Speedway after holding off Frank Kimmel and Clay Campbell in the late stages. Enfinger explained exclusively to me after the victory what the win meant and how big it was to help him advance his career.

“Definitely the biggest win for my career.” Enfinger told me after his memorable victory. “This win obviously ranks up there (among my greatest wins), but I don’t know if it has sank in yet. Speedway racing is much more of a team involvement and being at the right place at the right time compared to short track racing.”

During the early stages of the Lucas Oil 200 there was a multitude of cars involved in the ‘big one’ on the front stretch. Luckily, Enfinger was ahead of the incident, but he described to me what he could see.

“I saw the wreck happen in my mirror early in the race.” Enfinger explained to me. “That’s why track position and qualifying is important at Daytona, it just cuts away your chances of getting caught up in the big one”

Enfinger was challenged the entire event by Dylan Kwasniewski and Chase Elliott – both rising stars in NASCAR. He explained to me what it was like to contend with Elliott and Kwasniewski.

“No different then racing with any of the other top ARCA drivers, they just have the best equipment out there.” Enfinger expressed to me about racing with Elliott and Kwasniewski. “Luckily, Team BCR game me a car that could beat them.”

Despite battling with Elliott and Kwasniewski for the majority of the event, Enfinger was forced to fend off Frank Kimmel in the final laps to capture the huge win.

“I knew Frank (Kimmel) would try to make something happen, if he could, but at the same time he (Kimmel) is a clean driver, and we’ve never had issues before.” Enfinger told me. “It just all worked out.”

Enfinger and BCR are attempting to run the entire ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards 2014 season, but funds are keeping them from reaching that goal.

“BCR team owner Howard Bixman is trying to get us to every race (this season).” Enfinger explained to me. “Great partners like Casite/Motor Honey, Advance Auto Parts, WURTH USA, and Stanley Industries are helping greatly”

Enfinger will return to track at Mobile Speedway, his home track and the site of his first ARCA Racing Series victory next month.

“I already felt good about Mobile, but this (win) gives confidence to everyone on our team (heading to Mobile).” Enfinger told me about his chances heading back to his home track.

Congrats to Enfinger on the remarkable Daytona International Speedway victory, and a HUGE thanks to him for doing the interview.

While most fans are thrilled by drivers going in circles, there are those that beat to a different drum. That drum is set to be answered by Canadian Tire Motorsports Park as they have announced a thrilling 2014 race schedule for their 3.957 km road course located in Bowmanville, Ontario.

The highlight of the season will be on August 31st as the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will take to the track for their Chevrolet Silverado 250. Last year’s inaugural event saw the biggest attendance the facility has seen in years as fans flocked the grounds to get a glimpse of the NASCAR stars. The action on track also lived up to expectations with a thrilling finish between Chase Elliott and Austin Dillon.

Joining the trucks that weekend will be the the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin, the Canadian Touring Car Championship and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

For the Canadian Tire Series, the August date marks their second stop at CTMP for 2014. NCAT will kick off their season with a trip to CTMP on May 18th, as part of Victoria Day Speedfest Weekend. Fans will be able to attend the season opener and see if Scott Steckly will start his road to a second straight title with a win, or if he can beat by the likes of D.J. Kennington or Alex Tagliani.

The NCAT series will be joined that weekend by the SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series, Pirelli World Challenge (Touring and B-Spec), the Canadian Touring Car Championship, the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge and the Formula 1600 Super Series. There will also be fireworks on Saturday evening for fans to enjoy.

For vintage race fans, a trip to CTMP is in order in June as June 13th to the 15th is the Canadian Historic Grand Prix. This event is organized by the Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada and will include restored cars from the past 50+ years of auto racing. The feature event for this year is the Triumph vs MG Canadian-American Showdown.

Sports cars fans will also be delighted as the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship will once again bring the GT cars north of the border from July 10th to 13th with the Mobile 1 SportsCar Grand Prix. Though also included under the new TUDOR banner for 2014 is the prototype cars as well.

Also in action on this weekend is the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Cooper Tires Prototype Lites, IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge, Lamborghini Super Tofeo North Carolina and the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy MX-5 Cup.

Lastly, two wheel fans are also in luck as CTMP announced that they will once again host a Superbike Doubleheader Weekend from August 15th to the 17th. Canada’s top motorcycle riders will compete in a double header points race for the National Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship.

With a schedule full of action each month at a top level, CTMP definitely looks to please fans once again in 2014.

  • Daniel Suarez scores K&N East UNOH Battle of the Beach for second straight win

Daniel Suarez scores K&N East UNOH Battle of the Beach for second straight win

Daniel Suarez would dominate his second straight NASCAR K&N East Series event, as he took the victory in the UNOH Battle of the Beach for the second straight win in a row. Suarez won the season opener at New Smyrna Speedway on Sunday.

“I can’t believe this,” Suarez commented. “I can’t thank everyone enough on the team. I have no explain what I feel right now.”

Suarez would take the lead on lap 32 and didn’t look back as he held off the challenges from Austin Hill and Brandon McReynolds.

Hill would finish second after a thrilling battle on the final laps with McReynolds. McReynolds finished third as he gets set to run the full NASCAR K&N West Series schedule for Bill McAnally Racing.

McReynolds’ teammate Nick Drake finished fourth with two-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Champion Lee Pulliam fifth. Pulliam came back for a top five after going for a spin on lap 64.

Kenzie Ruston finished sixth after going for a spin on lap 75, while Gray Gaulding finished seventh after serving a pass-thru penalty for being too aggressive on lap 64 after spinning David Garbo Jr. Patrick Staropoli finished eighth followed by Scott Heckert and Kaz Grala.

Brandon Gdovic finished 11th, followed by Jesse Little, who went around a couple of times throughout the course of the 150 laps. Sergio Pena finished 13th followed by last year’s winner Cameron Hayley. Hayley got spun early and worked his way back into the top five, before being spun with 13 laps to go by Gdovic. Pole sitter Ben Rhodes rounded out the top 15 after he sustained heavy front end damage to contact with Jerry Dawson when Dawson spun.

Jay Beasley finished 16th, followed by McKenna Bell, Brodie Kostecki, Eddie McDonald and Ryan Gifford.

  • Doug Coby wins the UNOH Battle of the Beach Modified Race

Doug Coby wins the UNOH Battle of the Beach Modified Race

He may have only led three laps – but he led the three laps that counted the most. Doug Coby made the pass on the final restart to take the win in the UNOH Battle of the Beach Modified race at Daytona International Speedway.

“It doesn’t matter what you race here, to be a winner at Daytona and bring it to a brand new team with my first time in this car – it’s really special,” Coby said. “I tried to keep putting myself in position. We got lucky that caution came out at the end. Ryan Preece had the best car but it’s the battle of the beach – anything can happen.”

Ryan Preece would start the 150 lap race on pole and pulled out to the early lead, holding off all challenges on the ensuing restarts.

After a late race restart with 14 laps to go in the 150 lap event, Preece once again jumped out ahead and began to close up on the back of the field. As he closed in on the No. 36 of David Sapienza, Sapienza went down towards the infield, and then kept the car pointed forward as he headed for turn one. Preece went into turn one at the same time, which caused the pair to make contact with Sapienza going around while Preece sustained heavy left rear damage.

Preece stayed on track with the left rear bent as the leader and went for the final restart with four to go.  As the field went through turn one, Patrick Emerling would spin out of second while Coby would sneak underneath Preece for the lead. Coby then held on the rest of the way, holding off Jason Myers.

Myers finished second, followed by Luke Fleming and Preece.

“I don’t know what to say about it. All I can say is I can’t thank these guys enough,” Preece commented. “It’s unfortunate – I don’t know if he even turned there. This is horrible – Daytona. It would’ve meant a lot to me to win this race.”

Moving forward, Preece says he’s going to “keep it going for the rest of the year. There’s 14 races and I plan on winning most of them.”

Burt Myers rounded out the top five, followed by Thomas Barrett Jr., Cody Ware, Ron Silk, Eric Goodale and J R Bertuccio.

The race featured multiple cautions for single car spins throughout the course of 150 laps, though most drivers were able to continue. Two of the biggest disappointments were Cole Powell and Justin Bonsigmore, who both fell out of the event due to mechanical issues after running inside the top five.

“I think the motor is starting to break so instead of breaking it, we decided to come in with it being not for points,” Bonsigmore. “We’re trying out the NASCAR spec motor. It started to get hot and we couldn’t get it cooled down and watched it start to break up so we pulled in.”

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour will kick off their season on March 9th at Caraway Speedway while the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour kicks off their season on April 6th at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.

  • Jason Hathaway to run Chevrolets in 2014

Jason Hathaway to run Chevrolets in 2014

Ed Hakonson Racing announced earlier this month that they will switch from Dodge to Chevrolet with Jason Hathaway once again behind the wheel of the team’s No. 3 Snap-On Tools/Rockstar Energy Drink Chevrolet.

“We have been treated very well by Dodge & MOPAR family over the last 11 years, but our Team felt that it was time to make a change and support one of the other great North American manufacturers in the Series,” team owner Ed Hakonson commented. “We think this will offer General Motors and Chevrolet a great spring board to leverage motorsports in the Canadian marketplace.”

Jason Hathaway has been with the team since 2006, when he won the CASCAR Rookie of the Year Award.

Last year, Hathaway finished third in points with two wins.

He will be joined by fellow rookie Austin Hill, who posted a qualifying time of 18.719 seconds. Gray Gaulding qualified third followed by Ronnie Bassett Jr. and Brennan Newberry.

New Smryna winner Daniel Suárez qualifed sixth, followed by Brodie Kostecki, David Garbo Jr., Lee Pulliam and Kenzie Ruston. Last year’s UNOH Battle of the Beach winner Cameron Hayley qualified 13th.

  • Grant Enfinger Holds Off Frank Kimmel For His Third Career Victory

Grant Enfinger Holds Off Frank Kimmel For His Third Career Victory

Grant Enfinger’s determination assisted him to victory lane in the Lucas Oil 200 at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday. His celebration after the impressive win proved just how much his third career ARCA Racing Series victory meant.

“This is pretty special,” Enfinger said. “To get this, Iowa and Mobile last year means the world to me. Appreciate everybody at Team BCR. We have some great sponsors and great partners. It doesn’t get much better than this.”

Enfinger, who began the race in the second starting position, fought off a late race caution and a charging Frank Kimmel to seal the victory. Kimmel wounded up with a career-best second place finish at DIS, but again, his ultimate career goal of winning at Daytona wasn’t accomplished.

Clay Campbell, Martinsville Speedway President, racked up a magnificent third place finish. Tom Hessert and Tyler Reddick rounded out the top five after making many moves in the closing laps.

The pivotal moment of the event occurred in the beginning laps after Buster Graham was sent around which caused a catastrophe on the front stretch. Justin Boston, Will Kimmel, Justin Allison and Jeb Burton were the notable drivers involved in the multi-car incident.

Dylan Kwasniewski, who inherited the pole after many competitors failed post-qualifying tech, was shuffled outside the top five in the closing laps and eventually finished a dismal 14th position.

Chase Elliott, who was certainly a favorite entering the race, finished ninth after having a bad restart with under nine laps to go. John Wes Townely, last year’s Daytona winner, finished a satisfying 11th place finish.

The ARCA Racing Series returns to the racetrack on March 22nd at Mobile International Speedway, which is Enfinger’s home track and a track in which he captured one of his three career victories.

  • Shane Stickel looking for first win during sophomore season

Shane Stickel looking for first win during sophomore season

After winning the Canadian Vintage Modified championship last season, Shane Stickel was looking for a challenge for 2013. As a result, he turned to the OSCAAR Modified division to see how he’d do against the division’s top drivers.

“Started to work on the hobby car and agreed with my dad that I wasn’t really into it,” Stickel said. “Went down to the states and picked up the car. I love the look of these cars.”

Stickel spoke to the amount of diversity in the series with his car being a “Troyer by McColl” and, for example, Davey Terry’s being a “Troyer by Hanley”.

“My car has a complete late model front clip so that helps with setup,” Stickel commented. “Only car like it out there. The series definitely has it’s variety.”

The rulebook allows for this to happen and Stickel says it’s all about figuring out the magic combination to beat two-time series champion Gary McLean.

Last year, the Kitchener, Ontario native did pretty solid with his set-up as he brought home the No. 39 MSD Machine Tool/ Shelane Properties/ Huron Fasteners/ Creative Edge Signs & Graphics/Metal Supermarkets/Paragon Collision Centre/MAC Contracting/Bizign Design Company/SpeedwayPhoto.ca Modified sixth in points.

“OSCAAR has the top drivers in the province,” Stickel commented. “Since I was a little kid hanging around the tracks, I remember hanging around these guys. Now I’m racing them.”

Stickel joked that at the Rick Woolner Memorial when he started fourth, he looked behind him and went “Holy Crap” and had to calm down.

Stickel will return to the tour in 2014 as he looks to bring home his first career victory. He came close last year, finishing second in the Chase for the Colors event at Peterborough Speedway.

The young driver will be dealt some new challenges as the series heads to Capital City Speedway for the first time.

“It’s hard to turn down the opportunity to move to other tracks,” Stickel commented. “It’s helped grow the series. But the negative is in the travel. I’m all pro due to growth.”

Stickle started his career at the age of seven in the Waterloo Karting Club and thanks his dad for the success along the way.

“I don’t have a big team – only have a couple friends that help at the track,” he started. “At the shop it’s just us (me and dad) working hard – him more than me. I can’t thank him enough for helping me. Without him, I wouldn’t be here.”

  • Alex Tagliani to run full NCAT schedule, spreading food allergy awareness

Alex Tagliani to run full NCAT schedule, spreading food allergy awareness

At the 2014 Canadian Motorsports Expo, Alex Tagliani announced that he will run the full NASCAR Canadian Tire Series schedule behind the wheel of the No. 18 EpiPen/Pfizer Canada Dodge.

Following that announcement, Tagliani Autosport announced on Friday that they will be using cars out of the 22 Racing stable, which is home to 2013 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Champion Scott Steckly.

I’m very excited to have Alex drive out of our 22 Racing stable this season,” team owner/driver Scott Steckly stated in the press release. “Tag is a proven professional that will make our team even better with his passion and grit to be the best at what he does. He will bring another level of competition to the Series, so that means we will all have to race harder for wins and the championship with Alex out there.”

“I have long respected Scott Steckly’s racing operation and their high degree of success in The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series,” Tagliani boasted. “They are so professional as a team working with their sponsors. I cannot think of a better partnership to create a lasting bond in this series to provide the best service and effort possible for our sponsors and partners going forward. I am very excited with this new alliance.”

Tagliani felt the move to the NCAT would benefit himself and his partners in spreading awareness about food allergies.

“The fact that we have a Canadian platform that we have to go to different cities across the country was important for our group – our sponsors – and the message that EpiPen is trying to pass with this growing health issue,” Tagliani commented.

Approximately 2.5 million Canadians have at least one food allergy that effects them and Tagliani’s goal is to spread awareness and educate people across Canada about allergies. The cause is important to Tagliani as he suffers from an allergy to peanuts.

“It’s a program that is very dear to my heart,” he commented. “For those of you who don’t know, I’m very allergic to nuts, peanuts and almonds so I carry my Epipen wherever I go so it’s great to have our racecar carry that message. It’s great to use the Canadian Tire Series as our platform to spread our message across the country.”

To help spread awareness, Tagliani will once again host the Summer of Tag (Treating Allergies with Genuine care), supporting Anaphylaxis Canada in the effort to engage people in conversation about managing food allergies and what to do if someone is having a reaction. Tagliani will visit schools in three Canadian cities – Montreal, Toronto and Edmonton – where he will talk to students about the issue.

Once again for the second year in a row, Tagliani will host a Helmet Design contest – while also hosting a racecar design contest for the first time. Children will be encouraged to create a design of their own with Tagliani choosing a design to wrap his racecar with and a helmet to wear. The helmet with the winning design will be auctioned off at the end of the season to raise funds for Anaphylaxis Canada.

“We are very excited to launch the Summer of TAG again this year,” Laurie Harada, Executive Director of Anaphylaxis Canada, said. “As the mother of a son with multiple food allergies, I appreciate how Alex can inspire young people, encourage them to follow their dreams, and not let food allergies define them.”

For more information about the Summer of TAG, school visits, Helmet Design contest and the Race Car Design contest, check out www.summeroftag.com.
