  • Another Consistent Weekend for David Gravel on the West Coast

Another Consistent Weekend for David Gravel on the West Coast

Watertown, Conn.—March 24, 2013 — Sometimes in racing it’s all about being in the right place at the right time. Both races David Gravel competed in this past weekend with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series were filled with yellow and red flag periods, with the young driver steering clear of those incidents in one event and being involved in a wild last lap in the other. When all the dust settled, Gravel recorded finishes of sixth and 13th as he continues to fill-in for the injured Bill Rose in the Firetext Response Maxim.

In his debut at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., in the Mini Gold Cup on Saturday, March 23, Gravel found himself battling for the second position on the last lap, following a green-white-checker restart on the white flag lap, in a race that was thus extended one lap to a 41-lap contest. He got sideways on the last lap and spun as he was battling Tony Stewart for the runner-up spot, leaving the latter nowhere to go, which set off a chain reaction that led to several cars being involved in the incident. Gravel was able to nurse the car across the finish line in sixth.

“We had a chance on the last restart and that’s all you can ask for,” said Gravel. “I drove it hard into (turn) one and got squeezed up there. I was going for it and came up a little short. It was a good effort and I’m glad we were able to finish at the end after everything that happened.”

The 20-year-old lined up eighth for the main event and gained two spots on the start, before the first caution flag of the night flew, leading to a complete restart. On the second start, Gravel again powered his way up to sixth. Following a red flag period on the third circuit, the native of Watertown, Conn., used an exceptional restart to go all the way from sixth to third. He would run in that spot for several laps and found himself fourth at the halfway point of the race. Gravel would move into third on lap-24 and moved up to second 10 laps later, getting around Stewart. A red flag on lap-35 took the leaders out of traffic and gave Gravel a chance to battle leader and eventual winner Paul McMahan.

Gravel timed in 13th-fastest in his first race at the quarter-mile Silver Dollar Speedway, which put him on the pole of the first 10-lap heat race. He would win that heat race to earn a spot in the dash. Gravel started seventh in the dash and finished eighth, which put him on the outside of the fourth row for the 40-lap Mini Gold Cup.

“We had to thrash all night,” he noted. “We broke a U-Joint in hot laps and came back and were able to qualify in the right spot and start on the pole of a heat. We took advantage of that and won the heat to get in the dash, which is always important. We made the most of it and a sixth-place finish isn’t that bad, even though we lost a few spots at the end.”

Gravel kicked off the weekend on Friday, March 22 at the brand new Stockton 99 Dirt Track, which hosted a standing-room-only sold out crowd for the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series inaugural event at the three-eighths-mile. Gravel started 15th in the 30-lap main event and fell back as far as 21st in the early going. He endured a total of six slowdowns during the race and was able to work his way back forward. Gravel charged from 17th to 13th in the final 10 laps, including using a late race restart with two laps remaining to gain a pair of spots to take the checkered flag in 13th.

The East Coast racer began the night by turning the 11th-fastest lap in time trials, which put him in the heat race inversion. He started second in the third eight-lap heat and finished third, coming up just one spot shy of earning a spot in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series dash.

“It just wasn’t our night at Stockton,” shared Gravel. “Someone drove over our right rear and flattened it in the heat, so we weren’t able to finish in the top-two to get into the dash. We had a good opportunity there. We were a little off at the beginning of the feature, but the car got better late in the race. It seemed like once I got it figured out, we were able to move up a little bit.”

Gravel is currently seventh in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship standings after the first 10 races of the season, just two points out of sixth and 14 markers out of the top-five. He has five top-10 finishes in 10 races, with two of those being top-five performances. Gravel will return to action on Friday, March 29 at Merced Speedway in California as he continues to fill-in for Rose.

“It’s been great visiting all of these new tracks out west and getting to meet and race with new people as well,” he said. “A lot of fans that have never seen me race are getting to see me race also, which is great. The weather has been fantastic and everything seems to be going pretty good. I can’t wait to get back to the track next weekend.”

  • Kraig Kinser Comes Home Eighth in the Mini Gold Cup

Kraig Kinser Comes Home Eighth in the Mini Gold Cup

Bloomington, Ind.—March 24, 2013— Kraig Kinser has only raced in the Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway three times in his career, but he has turned in solid performances and finished among the top-10 in each of those races. He continued the trend this past weekend as he recorded an eighth-place finish at the quarter-mile bullring located in Chico, Calif., as the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series continued their early season West Coast swing.

Kinser began the 40-lap main event on Saturday, March 23 in the 14th spot aboard the Casey’s General Store/Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim, with an opening lap caution necessitating a complete restart. The native of Bloomington, Ind., found himself 14th on the second start. After falling back a spot early, he began to move forward and was up to 11th by the 10th go-around. He would run in that position for the majority of the race, before working his way into the top-10 on a lap-34 restart, and would gain a couple more positions in the late going. The race was extended to 41 laps by a caution on the original white flag lap. Kinser took the checkered flag in the eighth spot to earn his fifth top-10 finish of the season.

“After the tough night we had at Stockton, it was good to be in the top-10 at Chico,” said Kinser. “We qualified well with a very strong field of cars, so that is very encouraging. We need to make into the dash though, so we can start a little further up front in the main event. To start 14th and continue to move forward, we can’t complain about that. Each time we hit the track this year we keep learning things that will help us as the season goes on.”

The Mini Gold Cup began for the third-generation driver with a seventh-place effort in time trials, with a very strong 41-car field timing in. Kinser started third in the third 10-lap heat race and finished fourth to earn a spot in the main event.

Kinser opened the weekend on Friday, March 22 in the inaugural World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event at the brand-new Stockton 99 Dirt Track, before a sold-out crowd. He timed in 21st-fastest of the 44 entries that took to the three-eighths-mile. Kinser lined up sixth in the first eight-lap heat race and finished in that same spot, coming up just one position short of transferring to the 35-lap main. He was in a transfer spot in the B-main coming to the white flag, when he ran out of fuel. Kinser took a provisional to the start the A-Feature where he battled mechanical problems and wound up 26th.

“That was just one of those nights, where you try to forget about it as quick as you can and move on,” he noted. “Thankfully there was a race the next night, so we didn’t really have much time to dwell on it. With how much we race, you have to have a short memory and look ahead as usually there is another race pretty soon after you’ve had a tough night.”

Following the first 10 races of the 2013 World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series season, Kinser is ninth in points. He has five top-10 finishes, of which two are top-five showings. He’ll return to action on Friday, March 29 at Merced Speedway as the series continues a nine-race stretch in California.

“We’re working hard to get better each week,” he stated. “Right now, just racing on the weekends can make it tough to get into a rhythm, but it gives us plenty of time during the week to go through the car and work on little things. Out here, all you can do is keep after it and usually things will start to click.”

Kraig Kinser Racing would like to thank Casey’s General Stores, Mesilla Valley TransportationMaxim, Aerodine Composites, Sander Engineering, Integra Shocks, All Star Performance, FK Rod Ends, Brown & Miller Racing Solutions, Bell, KSE Racing Products, ButlerBuilt,Schoenfeld HeadersDonovan EngineeringFel-ProBrodixWilwood, Dyer’s, Barnes Systems, Ringer Gloves, Jakes Custom Golf Carts, and Ben Cook Racing Limited for their continued support.

  • David Gravel Continues Strong West Coast Swing with a Fourth-Place Finish in Debut at Tulare

David Gravel Continues Strong West Coast Swing with a Fourth-Place Finish in Debut at Tulare

Watertown, Conn.—March 17, 2013 — Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California, can be one of the toughest, most grueling and challenging tracks on the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series schedule. This was certainly the case this past weekend as many of the veteran drivers battled with and were bit by the high-banked, third-mile bullring. How did David Gravel stack up in his first visit to Tulare? Pretty well, as he finished fourth on the opening night, continuing his role filling-in for the injured Bill Rose in the Fire Text Response Maxim.

“It took a little bit to get used to the track and the surface, but it reminded me a little bit of Haubstadt (Tri-State Speedway in Indiana) and that was helpful,” said Gravel. “All in all, I had fun there and we were able to get another top-five, which is great for Bill’s team. It’s a cool track and I look forward to hopefully going back there down the road.”

Gravel lined up fourth in the 35-lap main event on Friday, March 15 and was running in that same position on the opening lap when the first caution of the night flew, leading to a complete restart. On the second start, he ran fifth and found himself in seventh when the red flag came out on the eighth circuit. The native of Watertown, Conn., moved up a spot on the 10th lap and ran in that same spot when the second red flag of the night was displayed on the 15th go-around. He moved up to fifth on lap-15 when the leader stopped and took the fourth spot from series point leader Daryn Pittman on the ensuing restart. Gravel would remain fourth for the duration of the 35-lapper to earn his second top-five finish of the season.

Opening the night as the eighth-fastest qualifier of the 32 entrants, Gravel took to the track in the third starting spot in the fourth eight-lap heat race. He would finish second in that contest to earn a spot in the dash, where he would both start and finish fourth, which put him on the outside of the second row when the field was assembled for the A-Feature.

“Getting in the dash helped quite a bit as that gave us a good starting spot in the feature,” he noted. “I was still getting used to the track on Friday night and there were a few rough spots, so it was certainly a challenge. I lost a few spots in the feature, but I was able to get them back late in the race and to earn a top-five in my first time at Tulare, I am pretty happy with that.”

Gravel recovered from a mid-race flat tire on the final night at Tulare on Saturday, March 16 to work his way back up to a 16th-place finish on a track was very challenging to pass on. The young driver timed in 14th-fastest in time trials, just missing the heat race inversion by two spots. He started fifth in the second eight-lap heat race and finished in that same spot to earn a spot in the 35-lap main event. Gravel worked his way up to 11th on the initial start of the A-Feature, though an opening lap caution led to a complete restart. He was running 13th on lap-14 when he was forced to the work area with a flat right rear. Over the final 21 laps he would work his way from 23rd to 16th.

“If we hadn’t had the flat tire we probably would have been closer to finishing 10th or so, but we were still able to work out way back up after that, and on a track that was very hard to pass on,” Gravel shared. “Considering all of that, it wasn’t that bad of a night. We always want to finish a few spots higher, but we gave it our all and sometimes luck just works against you. We’ll stay positive and move on to the two races this coming weekend.”

Gravel is currently eighth in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship standings, just 20 markers out of the top-five. He has earned four top-10 finishes in the first eight races this season. The 20-year-old will continue to fill-in for Rose next weekend as the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series makes their debut at the Stockton 99 Dirt Track on Friday, March 22 and then visits Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico on Saturday, March 23 for the running of the Mini Gold Cup.

“Things have gone pretty well so far on the West Coast,” said Gravel. “To have two top-five finishes in five races is pretty solid. There have been a few times where lack of experience has hurt us a bit, but we’re getting better. The main thing is qualifying in the right spot so we can get in the dash and start towards the front of the feature each night.”

  • Best of Both Worlds: Kraig Kinser Heads to Stockton & Chico this Weekend

Best of Both Worlds: Kraig Kinser Heads to Stockton & Chico this Weekend

Bloomington, Ind.—March 20, 2013— The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series has a long history, with a handful of tracks that have been around since the early days of the series. Building on this legacy, the series continues to visit new tracks as well. That will be the recipe this weekend, as Kraig Kinser and his fellow competitors will race at the Stockton 99 Dirt Track for the first time, while also making a stop at the storied Silver Dollar Speedway as the West Coast swing continues in California.

Kinser will make his debut at Stockton 99 Dirt Track in Stockton, Calif., on Friday, March 22, piloting the Casey’s General Store/Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim, followed by a visit to Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., for the Mini Gold Cup on Saturday, March 23.

Stockton 99 Dirt Track, a semi-banked, three-eighths-mile, which sits on the grounds of the San Joaquin Fairgrounds, will be one of three tracks that the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series will be visiting for the first time in 2013. Kinser has raced once this season on a three-eighths-mile, finishing ninth at Tucson International Raceway in Arizona.

“I always look forward to going new tracks,” he shared. “Seeing a track that you’ve never been to is always helpful, because you learn new things at every track. Each track has its own characteristics and I like running all of the track we race at. That’s one of the reasons I love running with the World of Outlaws is because you get to see so many tracks. It’s also fun to go to a track that everyone is on equal ground at.”

Kinser finished sixth last season in the Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway, which was shortened to a one-night event due to rain. He opened that night as the fastest qualifier of the 36 drivers on-hand, turning a lap of 12.458-seconds, which was one of six fast time awards he claimed during the 2012 campaign. He finished fifth in the first 10-lap heat race to earn a spot in the dash. He started sixth in the dash and finished in that same spot, which put him on the outside of the third row for the 35-lap main event.

The third-generation driver returned to Silver Dollar Speedway in the fall for the Gold Cup Race of Champions, where he finished 12th on the first preliminary night, was ninth on the second prelim night and came home 17th in the 40-lap A-Feature to cap the event. Kinser has made a total of 17 starts in his career with the World of Outlaws at Silver Dollar Speedway, picking up five top-10 finishes along the way, including a career-best third-place showing in the finale of the Mini Gold Cup in 2009.

“There are a lot of factors involved in if the track is similar in the spring to how it is in the fall at Chico,” explained Kinser. “The elements and weather play a big part of that. The more you run at Chico, the more experience that you get and the better off that you are, because you’ll see the track all different ways and be able to adjust accordingly throughout the night.”

Entering this weekend’s pair of races, Kinser is ninth in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship standings, just 24 markers out of the top-five. In the first eight races of the season, he has four top-10 finishes.

“We’re still learning the new tires and some of the things that have changed,” he noted. “There are still some question marks on some of the things that worked the last few years, whether they’ll work this year or not. We’ll keep making adjustments and looking for that right baseline set-up.”

Kraig Kinser Racing would like to thank Casey’s General Stores, Mesilla Valley TransportationMaximAerodine Composites, Sander Engineering, Integra Shocks, All Star Performance, FK Rod Ends, Brown & Miller Racing Solutions, Bell, KSE Racing Products, ButlerBuilt,Schoenfeld Headers, Donovan Engineering, Fel-Pro, Brodix, Wilwood, Dyer’s, Barnes Systems, Ringer Gloves, Jakes Custom Golf Carts, and Ben Cook Racing Limited for their continued support.

  • Kraig Kinser Earns Ninth-Place Finish in Finale at Tulare

Kraig Kinser Earns Ninth-Place Finish in Finale at Tulare

Bloomington, Ind.—March 17, 2013— There are a few tracks on the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series circuit that really test a driver’s mettle. One of those is Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif. The high-banked, third-mile usually requires a driver to “sit up in the seat” a little more than normal and get their “elbows up.” That was definitely the case on the opening night of the World of Outlaws two-night event at the track this past weekend. The finale presented a completely different challenge as the track was very slick and tough to pass on. Kraig Kinser battled both nights and was able to come away with a ninth-place finish in the finale as well as earning the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award in the opener.

“It was definitely a challenging weekend, but we kept working hard and battling,” said Kinser. “We were able to roll the car on the trailer in one piece and sometimes that’s an accomplishment in itself. We tested last week prior to Tulare and are finding little things in the car to work on and are still getting used to the new tires, especially on the smaller tracks. You have to look at the positives each night and build off those and that’s what we will do.”

Kinser was the eighth-fastest driver in time trials on Saturday, March 16 aboard the Casey’s General Store/Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim. That qualifying effort would help him earn a spot in the dash, after finishing fifth in the third eight-lap heat race. The dash would find the third-generation driver taking the green flag in seventh and he would cross the line eighth, which put him on the inside of the fourth row for the 35-lap A-Feature.

Kinser was running eighth at the start of the main event, when the first caution flag of the night was displayed, necessitating a complete restart. On the second start he found himself in eighth again. He dropped one spot on the eighth lap to ninth and would run there for most of the remainder of the 35-lapper, which was plagued by a total of seven yellow and red flags. When the checkered flag came, Kinser crossed the line in ninth to earn his fourth top-10 finish in the first eight races of the 2013 campaign.

“We were able to get in the dash and that was big,” he shared. “It had been quite a few races since we had been in the dash and with how important track position was starting up front was a key to finishing in the top-10. One of our goals each night is to qualify well and get into the dash and that really dictates a lot of how your night will go.”

In the opener at Thunderbowl Raceway on Friday, March 15, Kinser earned the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award, finishing 18th, after starting 25th. The native of Bloomington, Ind., battled mechanical problems for most of the night. Trouble with the magneto forced him to miss his scheduled place in the time trial order and he received one lap at the end of qualifying. Kinser found himself starting eighth in the fourth eight-lap heat and finished sixth, coming up just one spot shy of transferring to the main event. Prior to the B-main, his team made an engine change, which forced him to miss that race and thus use a provisional to start the 35-lap main event.

“We were chasing gremlins all night with the car and we were able to make up a little ground in the feature,” Kinser stated. “There was a lot of attrition in that race, so we were glad to finish with the car intact and learned a few things we were able to use on Saturday night.”

Kinser, who is currently ninth in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship standings, just 24 markers out of the top-five, returns to action next weekend at the brand new Stockton 99 Dirt Track on Friday, March 22 and then heads to Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico for the Mini Gold Cup on Saturday, March 23.

“It’s still early in the season, but you always want to be as close as you can to the front,” he noted. “We’ll go through everything extra close on the car this week to get ready for the two races next weekend and keep our heads down and stay focused.”

Fastline Motorsports Prepares For Busy 2013 Season

By Spencer Lewis – March 8th, 2013 – GRIMSBY, ON – Jeff Lapcevich and Fastline Motorsports will once again compete with the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series in 2013, with the Grimsby veteran excitedly announcing the return of long-time marketing partner Tim Hortons for a landmark 24th season.

“Having Tim Hortons back with our program for another season is amazing. We couldn’t ask for a better partner and I’m honored to have them on our team yet again. We’re also looking forward to raising awareness for the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundations Camps through our racing efforts this season.”

After a 2012 campaign that saw only 2 finishes come outside of the top-15, Lapcevich has announced a 2013 schedule that will see him focus on all 6 Ontario tour stops as well as 3 series events within the province of Quebec.

“We feel the schedule we’ve laid out gives us an excellent shot at contending for victories all season long. We’ll be heading to speedways that we’ve been strong at in the past, and with our brand new road course car and freshly updated oval car, we’re all very excited for what the 2013 season has in store.’’

In addition to support from Tim Hortons, Lapcevich would also like to welcome back Castrol, Cathcart Trucking, Troy Cove Marine and Springers Meats for 2013.

While Jeff gears up for a busy season with the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, his eldest son Cayden is preparing for a sophomore campaign with Sunset Speedway’s perennially tough Super Stock division.

After a 2012 season that saw then 12-year old Cayden become the youngest Rookie-of-the-Year in division history, the third-generation pilot is looking forward to debuting a brand new McColl Racing Enterprises chassis for his run at the 2013 track championship.

“I learned so much as a Rookie last season”, explained Cayden. “I can’t wait to get back on track see where I match up with some of the best Super Stock drivers in the province”

“Mike McColl and his entire staff at McColl Racing Enterprises are such professionals”, said Cayden. “I’m sure the new car they’ve built me will be unlike anything else I’ve ever driven”
