  • David Gravel Finishes Fourth in Finale at Las Vegas & Eighth in Tucson Filling in for the Injured Bill Rose

David Gravel Finishes Fourth in Finale at Las Vegas & Eighth in Tucson Filling in for the Injured Bill Rose

Watertown, Conn.—March 10, 2013 — David Gravel had never seen the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway until last Wednesday when he arrived at the half-mile for the first of two nights of racing at the state-of-the-art half-mile. Likewise, he had never been to Tucson International Raceway in Arizona. On top of that, the native of Watertown, Conn., had never sat in Bill Rose’s No. 6 car until he arrived the afternoon of the Las Vegas opener. None of that mattered though, as the 20-year-old quickly got up to speed in his first pair of races filling in for the injured driver, earning a season-best fourth-place finish on the second night of the “Sin City Showdown” and followed that up with an eighth-place showing at Tucson International Raceway.

“For being in the car for the first time it was a great three races,” said Gravel. “It’s exciting to know that we can be competitive in another car. I’m looking forward to continuing next weekend at Tulare (Thunderbowl Raceway). I’m still learning things about the car each time I’m on the track and feel more comfortable every time I climb behind the wheel. We’re only going to get keep getting better.”

Gravel began the finale of the two-night event at Las Vegas on Thursday, March 7, by turning the 15th-fastest lap in time trials, aboard Rose’s Fire Text Response Maxim, which put him on the pole of the third eight-lap heat race. He finished second in that contest to earn a spot in the dash. Gravel would come home sixth in the dash and lined up on the outside of the third row for the 30-lap main event.

The East Coast racer used a strong start to move up a spot at the start of the A-Feature. He was running fifth when the first caution flag of the night flew on the fifth lap. A long 20-lap green flag stretch of racing followed with Gravel remaining in fifth for most of those laps. The final caution flag of the night came out on lap-25. He restarted sixth and got around Wayne Johnson and Donny Schatz to move into fourth and would cross the finish line in that same position.

“The track really suited my style and our set-up in Las Vegas,” he shared. “The track was a little one groove and I went where people weren’t and was able to pass a bunch of cars. We had a really good car the first night, but our results didn’t show it, due to some bad luck. We definitely showed what we were capable of on the second night.”

Gravel earned his second consecutive top-10 finish on Saturday, March 9 in the Wildcat Shootout Presented by NAPA Auto Parts at Tucson International Raceway. He lined up 16th and quickly began moving forward. He broke into the top-10 on the sixth-lap and by the halfway point of the 30-lap contest found himself in eighth. At one point, he passed three-time World of Outlaws champion Sammy Swindell, Jason Sides, who is currently second in points, and five-time series titlist Donny Schatz on consecutive laps. In his debut at Tucson, Gravel was 16th in time trials, which put him sixth in the first eight-lap heat race in the three heat program. He finished sixth in that race to transfer to the 30-lap main event where he finished eighth.

“Most of the guys were running the bottom at Tucson and I was running the top and able to get by a lot of them,” Gravel noted. “The outside was really working for me most of the race, though I did lose a couple spots at the end. For my first time at the track I was pleased and it gives us some good momentum heading into next weekend.”

Gravel began the West Coast swing in Las Vegas with a 13th-place finish on Wednesday, March 6, battling a bent front axle and broken shock in the main event. He lined up 17th and was up to 11th by just the eighth lap. He timed in 17th on the night, missing the heat race inversion by just one spot. After finishing seventh in the first heat race, he would race his way into the A-Feature via the B-main, where he came home second.

Gravel will continue to fill in for Rose this coming weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., which will mark his first-ever racing trip to the Golden State. Gravel, who is contending for the 2013 World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award, is currently tied for ninth in points, just 38 markers out of the top-five.

Building Momentum: Kraig Kinser Finishes Ninth in Tucson

Bloomington, Ind.—March 10, 2013— Every night of racing with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series is a learning experience, no matter how many years a driver has been on the road. With a new tire this year, Kraig Kinser and his team are taking in everything they can as work to find the right balance and combination on the race car. They learned quite a bit during the opening three races of the West Coast swing and capped off the first week of that trip with a ninth-place finish at Tucson International Raceway in Arizona in the Wildcat Shootout Presented by NAPA Auto Parts.

Kinser lined up 14th for the 30-lap main event at Tucson on Saturday, March 9 aboard the Casey’s General Store/Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim and steadily worked his way forward, moving into the top-10 by the 10th circuit. The race was slowed by three cautions, including one on the initial start that led to a complete restart. An open red flag period gave teams a chance to work on their machines as well during the A-Feature. The ninth-place finish was Kinser’s third top-10 showing of the season and moved him up to seventh in the series standings.

“The track was very fast on Saturday night and you really had to pick and choose your spots to make passes,” said Kinser. “We made some good changes to the car over the course of the night and were pretty good in the feature. We didn’t quite start the West Coast swing how we were hoping at Las Vegas, but we’ll keep working hard and moving forward and have plenty of races left.”

Kinser kicked off the two-night event at Las Vegas on Wednesday, March 6 with an 18th-place finish, after being involved in a couple of cautions. He was caught up by a spinning car on the ninth lap and then had a flat tire on lap-18 that forced him to the work area. Kinser opened the night by turning the seventh-fastest lap in time trials of the 40 drivers in attendance. He finished third in the third eight-lap heat race to earn a spot in the 30-lap A-Feature.

In the finale at Las Vegas on Thursday, March 7, the native of Bloomington, Ind., finished 19th after suffering a broken U-joint early in the night. He timed in 23rd-fastest and was slated to line up sixth in the second eight-lap heat race, but was unable to start that event, which put him in the B-main. Kinser started fifth in the B-main and finished fourth to earn a spot in the 30-lap main event.

“We battled both nights in Las Vegas and that’s all you can do on nights like that when you have a bunch of bad luck,” Kinser shared. “Racing 90 times a year, you are bound to have a few nights like that here and there and you just have to make the most out of it, salvage what finish you can and move on. You can’t dwell on nights like that.”

After the first six races of the 2013 season, Kinser is seventh in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series standings, just 28 markers out of the top-five. He has three top-10 finishes, including a season-best third-place finish on the second night of the season at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida. Kinser returns to action next weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., for a two-night event as the World of Outlaws continue their early season West Coast swing.

“We have a few days now to get ready for Tulare and will keep tweaking and fine-tuning the car,” Kinser noted. “I’ve always enjoyed racing at Tulare and there are some great fans out there. Hopefully Mother Nature continues to cooperate and we can get all the races in. When you are just racing on the weekends, once or twice a week, you have to be on the track to stay in a rhythm.”

  • Venturini Rookies Shine at Mobile Speedway; Kyle Benjamin, Justin Boston & Taylor Ferns Earn Top-10 Finishes

Venturini Rookies Shine at Mobile Speedway; Kyle Benjamin, Justin Boston & Taylor Ferns Earn Top-10 Finishes

Concord, NC (March 10, 2013– On the heels of their dramatic ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season opening victory at Daytona, Venturini Motorsports (VMS) shifted gears and turned their attention to short track racing this weekend at Mobile International Speedway.

Saturday’s VMS entry list for the ARCA Mobile 200 consisted of ARCA championship contender, Justin Boston, Venezuelan native, Milka Duno and a pair of teenagers making their ARCA debuts, 15 year-old Kyle Benjamin and 17 year-old Taylor Ferns.

Kyle Benjamin, a native of Easley, S.C., has caught the attention of the racing world with performances well beyond his 15 years.

Living up to the pre-race hype, Benjamin delivered the goods.

Driving his No.15 “The Truth Band” sponsored Chevrolet; Benjamin showcased his raw talent and battled veteran drivers, en-route to a second-place finish in his highly anticipated ARCA debut.

“What an experience to come here in the ARCA car and accomplish what we did in our first race out,” said Benjamin. “Venturinis gave me a great car and the team worked hard all weekend. They did a great job and Kevin (Reed) made great calls on the pit box. We had an almost flawless day.”

Benjamin, who qualified fourth, battled race winner, Grant Enfinger for the top spot leading a total of 26-laps during the race. Benjamin’s second-place finish earned him SCOTT Rookie Challenge honors for the ARCA Mobile 200.

Coming off a near perfect showing with four wins and seven fast-time awards in his Super Late Model last month at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway, Benjamin made more headlines this weekend by becoming the youngest competitor in the 61 years of ARCA racing.

Benjamin, driving part-time for VMS in 2013 will make his next start at Salem Speedway on April 28th.

23-year old driver, Justin Boston, driving the No.25 ZLOOP Computer & Electronics Recycling Toyota rebounded nicely from a disappointing 31st place finish at Daytona with a solid sixth place finish at Mobile.

“Today’s race is exactly what we needed after our Daytona finish. Rebounding and getting a solid finish under our belt was important for this year’s championship run,” said Boston.

Justin Boston, a native of Baltimore, Maryland is focused on a full season effort in the ARCA series.

Qualifying ninth, Boston kept his sleek looking ZLOOP Toyota in the top-10 the entire day. With a limited stock-car racing resume the former motocross racer continues to impress his new team and adjust to his new surroundings within his 3,400 lb. stock car.

“The car was good all day long and I think we’ll be even better when we bring the car back to the track. Can’t thank ZLOOP and VMS enough for giving me the opportunity to represent them both. I plan on doing my part with strong finishes for all their hard work.”

Boston looks to build on his recent success and carry it over to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East this weekend where he’ll be fielding the No.25 VMS entry at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Another impressive debut was turned in by Shelby, Michigan’s, Taylor Ferns. Ferns, the all-time leading feature winner among women in United States Automobile Club (USAC) history made a strong impression with her solid 10th place finish.

With her sights set on a top-5 finish, Ferns was running in the 6th position with 12 laps to go before a hard charging car spun her going into turn one. Keeping her composure, Ferns got back in line to salvage her inspiring ARCA debut.

“My first ARCA race…that was awesome,” said the energetic Ferns. “I had a great car and learned a bunch from the guys on the team, especially my chief, Kevin Caldwell. I’ve still got a lot to learn as I’m transitioning from open-wheel to stock cars. I’m not use to shifting on the restarts, so I definitely need to work on that part, but overall, a great day for our team.”

Ferns, who qualified fifth, drove an impressive race behind the wheel of her No.55 Motor City Auto Transport Toyota. Following suit with teammates Benjamin and Boston, Ferns showed consistency and proved she’ll be a driver the ARCA field will have to contend with every time she hits the track.

Ferns, the 2011 USAC Mopar D1 Midget Champion, is scheduled to make six more starts in the ARCA Racing Series this year, with entries at Toledo, Elko, and Iowa Speedways. She will also race at larger tracks such as Pocono Raceway and Kentucky Speedway, and compete in the Labor Day dirt race at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.

Caracas, Venezuela driver, Milka Duno who signed on with VMS during the off-season made her return to Mobile this weekend driving her No.35 CANTV/Milka Way Chevrolet.

Coming off her career best qualifying effort at Daytona (outside pole position), Milka Duno drove a solid race Saturday afternoon taking the checkered flag in the 14th position, giving VMS four top-15 finishes in the 200-lap event.

Duno, who qualified 17th for the ARCA Mobile 200 consistently picked up speed throughout the day gaining valuable short track experience which will undoubtedly provide more confidence going into ARCA’s next event at Salem Speedway on April 28th.

With nearly a month off before the next scheduled ARCA event Venturini Motorsports looks ahead to next weekend where they’ll be pulling double duty at Bristol Motor Speedway, fielding Justin Boston in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event and making their team debut in the NASCAR Nationwide Series with Daytona winner, John Wes Townley behind the wheel of the No.25 Zaxby’s Toyota.

  • Enfinger takes checkered flag in ARCA Mobile 200

Enfinger takes checkered flag in ARCA Mobile 200

(IRVINGTON, Ala. –  March 9, 2013) — Grant Enfinger used a rocket re-start with fewer than 30 laps remaining and held off a late challenge from Kyle Benjamin Saturday afternoon to win the ARCA Mobile 200.

Enfinger, a local crowd favorite, took the lead on lap 172 when he ducked under 15-year-old Kyle Benjamin, then used another re-start with nine laps to go to stretch his lead and win his first-ever ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards event.

“I knew we were going to get here, I just didn’t think it would take this long,” Enfinger said in Victory Lane. “I started knocking on the door in 2009 and I don’t know how many second and third-place finishes I had.”

After Enfinger drove the Triple K Construction Ford into victory lane, a throng of family and friends surrounded him. Some of the loudest cheers came when he donned a University of Alabama Crimson Tide ball cap.

Anderson Bowen finished third, Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell winner Mason Mingus fourth and Frank Kimmel fifth.

Enfinger is from nearby Fairhope, Ala. and considers Mobile International Speedway a home track.

“I’ve wanted to win for so long,” he said. “To do it in front of the home crowd is something special. A lot of these people, family and friends, can’t come up north when we race. This is something special.”

Enfinger started second but took the lead by turn two of the first lap. He stayed out front much of the day, although Benjamin put a big challenge into him. During one of the longest green flag runs of the day, Benjamin was able to pass Enfinger. He pitted and still came out in front as his pit crew cheered him on. But, with 29 laps to go, Enfinger was stronger on the re-start and stayed in front the rest of the way.

“He was a little better than us on new tires,” Benjamin said. “I hated that the caution came out right there. We did all we could today.”

Benjamin, the SCOTT Rookie Challenge winner for the ARCA Mobile 200, was driving the same Venturini car that went to victory lane at Daytona International Speedway with John Wes Townley. He became the youngest driver in ARCA Racing Series history.

“I’m happy with my team and my crew chief,” Benjamin said. “They did an awesome job and Kevin made great calls. We had an almost flawless day.”

Bowen was another driver that stayed up front all race. He was driving in his first ARCA race.

“I feel like I accomplished my goals,” he said. “We kept our car in one piece and had a nice top five finish.”

There were a few on-track incidents. Spencer Gallagher and James Hylton were involved in one mishap. The cars of Cody Lane and Bo Lemastus also sustained damage during the day.

Michigan teenager Taylor Ferns started fifth and was running up front for much of the day when her got was damaged with 12 laps to go.

“It was so much fun,” she said. “It’s too bad what happened at the end, but I learned a lot. I like the longer races, it feels like its more of a team effort.”

Race promoter Tommy Praytor was pleased with the crowd and the race.

“Everyone here saw some great racing today,” he said. “There was a lot of two and three-wide racing in the corners. It’s not an easy track to get around, but I think it was a hometown guy using some of his hometown experience to get around the track and picking up his first win.”

  • Ryan Hunter-Reay tops RACER magazine’s 2012 RACER of the Year Awards

Ryan Hunter-Reay tops RACER magazine’s 2012 RACER of the Year Awards

IRVINE, Calif., (March 6, 2013) – The readers of RACER magazine and Racer.com have chosen IZOD IndyCar Series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay as their overall RACER of the Year and Road Racer of the Year for 2012.

Now in its 18th year, the RACER of the Year Awards presented by Hawk Performance is open to racers from a wide cross-section of motorsports series and determined entirely by reader voting. It’s that breadth of competition and fan-powered format that gives RACER of the Year its prestige and makes it an accolade that racers want to win.

Past winners of the overall RACER of the Year include Tony Stewart, Michael Schumacher, John Force, Lewis Hamilton and Jimmie Johnson. In joining them, Hunter-Reay becomes the first overall winner from North American open-wheel racing since Paul Tracy in 2003, the first IZOD IndyCar Series Champion and first American born open-wheel champion to win the prestigious award.

Over the course of the 2012 season, Hunter-Reay took four victories in his DHL/Sun Drop sponsored Andretti Autosport Dallara-Chevrolet, more than any other driver, taking two oval wins, at Milwaukee and Iowa, and two street-course wins at Toronto and Baltimore. He clinched the title in a tense season finale at Fontana, eventually beating Will Power (Team Penske Dallara-Chevrolet) by just three points.

Once again, RACER magazine and Racer.com readers voted in record numbers, powering Hunter-Reay to a comfortable victory in both categories. The Andretti Autosport driver beat NHRA Pro Stock star Erica Enders, Top Fuel champ Antron Brown and Formula 1 aces Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel to the overall RACER of the Year title.

In Road Racer of the Year voting, he finished ahead of two previous winners of the category, IndyCar’s Will Power and three-time and reigning F1 champ Vettel.

Ryan said: “I’m honored to have been chosen as the 2012 overall RACER of the Year as well as the Road Racer of the Year. A sincere thank you to all of those fans who took the time to vote. For consideration of this honor, my name was placed among distinguished drivers I feel privileged to be associated with, let alone to be the driver chosen. As the first Indy car driver selected since 2003, I’m proud to be able to represent IndyCar, Andretti Autosport  and our partners DHL, Sun Drop and Chevrolet.

“While 2012 was a hard-fought season, it was also a dream season in so many ways and it certainly would not have been possible without the unwavering support I’ve received from our team, sponsors, my family and of course the fans. Thank you for pushing me to limits I deemed unattainable, that’s what being a RACER is all about.”

RACER editor David Malsher commented: “Ryan’s clinching of a hard earned IZOD IndyCar Series title was just the warm-up act for his biggest achievement of all – winning RACER of the Year presented by Hawk Performance. Seriously, it’s fantastic to see that readers of RACER magazine and Racer.com appreciate just what Ryan achieved last year, with victories on both ovals and street courses.

“The IZOD IndyCar Series has given us some dramatic closing rounds in recent years, and the final two races of 2012 neatly summed up Ryan’s strengths: brilliant, daring driving in less than ideal track conditions at Baltimore, and keeping his head while driving an imperfect car at Fontana.

Malsher added: “As the champion, Ryan will be a credit to his team, his sponsors and IndyCar, like he always has been. But by being voted RACER of the Year presented by Hawk Performance, he’s also proven able to capture the hearts and minds of the readers. We’re pleased but not surprised by this: it’s well deserved.”

Malsher will personally deliver both coveted RACER of the Year presented by Hawk Performance trophies to Hunter-Reay at a special IZOD IndyCar Series preseason event in St. Petersburg, FL on Thursday, March, 21 prior to the opening race of the series on Sunday March 24.

The Spring 2013 issue of RACER includes full coverage of RACER of the Year presented by Hawk Performance, a wide-ranging interview with Hunter-Reay and the man he replaced as IZOD IndyCar Series champion, Dario Franchitti. The issue also features previews to the 2013 IndyCar, Formula 1, NASCAR, ALMS, Grand-Am, WEC and NHRA seasons.

  • Indoor Doubleheader for Tracy Hines this Weekend in Wisconsin

Indoor Doubleheader for Tracy Hines this Weekend in Wisconsin

New Castle, Ind.—March 8, 2013— Tracy Hines has had more than his fair share of success racing indoors in a midget over the years. He won the 2005 Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, as well as a preliminary feature that same year and has nine career top-10 finishes in the 12 Chili Bowl main events that he has qualified for. The veteran, who hails from New Castle, Ind., has a total of four-career indoor midget wins on his resume.

Hines will look to add to his indoor prowess this weekend as he heads to Wisconsin to compete in a pair of races with the Stark Automotive Group/Mid-State Badger Midget Auto Racing Association (BMARA). Hines will pilot the SpeedQuip Motorsports No. 75 Chevrolet-powered Phantom owned by Roger and Lara Miller.

“After having some winter weather at home in Indiana earlier this week, it will be good to race indoors,” said Hines. “It looks like the field is shaping up to be very strong, so the fans should see a couple of great races. Normally, we only get to race once a year indoors at the Chili Bowl, so this is a bonus this year and the perfect time for it as well.”

The Jack Link’s Sasquatch Indoor Nationals are set for Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10 at the Cedar Lake Arena on the grounds of the historic Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisc. The event will be contested on a one-fifth mile clay oval, which will mark the first midget race at the 120,000 square-foot venue in nearly five years. The Jack Link’s Sasquatch Indoor Nationals will open with a practice sessions on Friday, March 8 and will serve as the season opener for the BMARA. A special bonus of $1,000 is on the line for any driver that can win both midget features.

In this year’s Chili Bowl, which drew nearly 275 entries, Hines finished fifth in a preliminary feature on the third of four qualifying nights. He also took to the track for the annual Race of Champions, where he finished eighth. Hines wrapped up the event with some bad luck in the B-main on the final night. Over the course of the week-long event, he also turned the wrenches for five younger drivers, offering his knowledge and experience of the always challenging and one-of-a-kind event.

“Indoor races are pretty unique and you have to approach them a lot different than you do a typical race outdoors,” explained Hines. “Having experience over the years indoors should help quite a bit. It sounds like it will be pretty tight confines, so you have to be a little extra aggressive and really pick and choose your spots when trying to pass cars.”

Hines had competed with the Badger Midget Auto Racing Association a number of times over the years. He recorded a total of seven wins during the 2001 and 2002 seasons with the series. All of those victories came at the famed Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisc., including winning the Fireman’s Nationals back-to-back in 2001 and 2002 at the third-mile.

“I’ve always enjoyed racing Badger events,” he noted. “There are some very passionate midget fans up that way and they don’t get to see midgets very often in the western part of Wisconsin or Minnesota. It’s going to be a fun weekend for sure and I’ll give it everything I got and hopefully be in contention for a couple of wins.”

Along with competing in the Chili Bowl in January, Hines raced a midget in the 2013 USAC National Midget Series opening two events last month at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida. He finished third in the opener and was eighth in the finale at the high-banked, half-mile paved oval. Hines picked up a pair of USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series wins as well in Florida last month on the dirt at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala.

The 2000 USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series and 2002 USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series champion finished second in the overall USAC National Midget Series standings last season. After the first two events this season, he sits seventh in the USAC National Pavement Midget Championship, as separate titles will be awarded in 2013 for pavement and dirt races. Hines is currently tied for third in the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series standings, just seven markers out of the lead.

“We’ve had a pretty good start to the season and racing this weekend will help me stay in a rhythm,” Hines said. “When you are running strong, you never want to see a break in the schedule, so to race twice this weekend will be great and then it’s just a few more weeks and we get going here in the Midwest.”

  • Taylor Ferns Anxious for ARCA Debut with Great Venturini Support

Taylor Ferns Anxious for ARCA Debut with Great Venturini Support

Concord, NC (March 5, 2013– Much of 17-year-old Taylor Ferns’ racing background is in open-wheel cars, which should come as no surprise considering her position as the all-time leading feature winner among women in United States Auto Club history.

That’s not stopping the Shelby Township, Mich. driver and high school honor student from feeling confident about her ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards debut with Venturini Motorsports, though. Ferns will drive the team’s No. 55 Motor City Auto Transport Toyota at Mobile International Speedway Saturday, and knows she has the resources to be a contender in the Mobile ARCA 200, her first ARCA race.

“I’m really excited and I’m really anxious to get into the car,” Ferns said. “I can’t wait for my first ARCA race. I know that I have a lot of good people looking out for me, people who have already been through this. I have a great support system behind me and I think we’re going to have a good race if everything pans out right. I’m just really excited.”

Ferns joined her Venturini teammates in testing at Mobile last weekend, her first appearance at the track. While racing an ARCA car is a strict departure from her time in dirt midget and winged sprint cars, among others, she feels comfortable making her first ARCA appearance at the high-banked, half-mile oval.

“I think the track is a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s definitely different from the tracks I’m used to racing on, and especially being in a stock car and my first race in an ARCA car, I think it’s a perfect track to have my first race on. We got a lot of laps in (while testing). My first run going out, I was trying to get used to it. The last session we did was our mock qualifying run with sticker tires.”

Ferns, the USAC Mopar D1 midget champion in 2011, spent a week at Daytona International Speedway last month getting more familiar with the Venturini team. That week, Venturini driver John Wes Townley won the Lucas Oil 200 for the team’s first win at the track in over three decades. Ferns found herself enjoying the Venturini camaraderie and looking forward to driving for the team. She also tested for the team at Daytona back in December, finishing in the top five overall for the weekend and leading a session on the second day.

“(General manager) Billy (Venturini) and the whole Venturini team have always been there,” Ferns said. “We always work together and reflect off of each other. It’s teamwork, and it helps that you have a really big support system.”

Specifically among drivers, Ferns said Brennan Poole – a four-time ARCA winner for Venturini – has been helpful in her transition.

“He’s been through the motions before; he’s been to a lot of the tracks,” Ferns said of Poole. “He ran the full season last year, so he’s helped me out a lot. (Current teammate) Justin Boston and I go back and forth about how our cars are working and how we can adapt better. Since this is his first season in an ARCA car, we can learn together and grow together as drivers.”

In all, Ferns plans to make seven starts in the ARCA Racing Series this year, following her Mobile effort with entries at Toledo, Elko, and Iowa Speedways. She will also race at larger tracks such as Pocono Raceway and Kentucky Speedway, and compete in the Labor Day dirt race at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. First things are first, though, and Ferns is completely focused on delivering more success for Venturini Motorsports in Mobile, Ala.

Two 45-minute practices are scheduled for Friday at Mobile International Speedway, beginning at 2:30 and 4:15 p.m. Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell is scheduled for that evening, at 7 p.m. Ferns and the rest of the ARCA Racing Series field will participate in an on-track autograph session at noon Saturday, just before the 200-lap, 100-mile race at 2 p.m. All times listed are Central.
