Three-Day ARCA Racing Series Test Kicks Off – Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell Turns First Laps At DIS

[media-credit name=”Photo credit: Daytona International Speedway” align=”alignright” width=”210″]ARCA-4859_8273029352_l[/media-credit]DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Approximately 50 drivers kicked off a three-day ARCA Racing Series test session on Friday at Daytona International Speedway in advance of the 50th annual Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 on Saturday, Feb. 16, part of Budweiser Speedweeks 2013.

The season-opening ARCA race is celebrating its golden anniversary in 2013. The inaugural Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 back in 1964 was the series’ first superspeedway race in history.

Headlining the list of drivers in attendance for the test is the defending race winner Bobby Gerhart, a native of Lebanon, Penn., who pours his heart and soul into preparing for races at Daytona.

Gerhart has dominated the season-opening ARCA race, capturing a record eight victories in the 80-lap, 200-mile event, including six out of the last eight races.

He also holds an event-record four poles.

But with all that success, he’s just as hungry to win a ninth Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200.

“I’m pumped up to race here just like I was the first day I came,” Gerhart said. “We treat this race like we have not won any of them. That’s really what you have to do. You got to put yourself in position where you throw everything at it you can and work as hard as you can.”

Light rain slowed the morning session on Friday but teams got plenty of track time in the afternoon. At the lunch break, Gerhart was anxious to see where the field stood in terms of speed.

“I’m not going to be quiet about it, we’ve done a lot of work given the new rules package,” Gerhart said. “I’m anxious for some great weather and a great opportunity to see if what I believe is going to happen happens.”

Clay Campbell making his dream come true: Clay Campbell, president of the prestigious Martinsville Speedway, is taking his first laps around Daytona International Speedway’s legendary 2.5-mile tri-oval during this weekend’s test.

Campbell is testing a Spraker Racing Ford with a Roush Yates engine and plans to enter the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200.

“I’ve been doing various types of racing for 20 years and if you had the opportunity to do something bigger, I think anybody would jump at the chance,” Campbell said. “Anybody that would have the opportunity to run Daytona, you would be crazy not to. The history, the tradition, this is the ultimate as far as motorsports goes.

“This is obviously hallowed ground. This is the ‘World Center of Racing.’ Who wouldn’t want to drive on the World Center of Racing.’ ”

Campbell is working with racing veteran Jeff Spraker, who has been fielding cars for Campbell the past two seasons in the NASCAR K&N Pro East Series. The two began discussing the opportunity of racing an ARCA event at a superspeedway.

Campbell competed in the fall ARCA event at Talladega Superspeedway and is ready to tackle NASCAR’s most storied venue Daytona International Speedway in February.

“That was a good place to start,” Campbell of Talladega where he started 34th and finished 26th. “Even though (Daytona and Talladega) look the same and they are almost the same, there’s quite a bit of difference. This is much narrower than Talladega.”

During Budweiser Speedweeks, Campbell will be focused and prepared for his Daytona debut, but he won’t forget to promote his upcoming NASCAR race schedule.

“We’ll announce a sponsor later but anytime I have the chance to mention the Virginia 500 on April 7 at Martinsville Speedway, I am going to do so,” Campbell joked. “Good tickets still remain.”

Road to Daytona: Four drivers who achieved success in the three ARCA touring series in the 2012 season are experiencing the opportunity of a lifetime during this weekend’s test.

Johnny VanDoorn, Travis Braden, Jonathan Eilen and Dakota Carlson are participating in the test session having earned spots in the second-year “Road to Daytona” program.

“It was pretty cool just to say some day that I got to go around Daytona,” said Carlson after his first laps on Friday morning. “Us short track racers, we’re never going to make it to this level more than likely. It definitely sits you down in the seat when you go into the corner.

“It was a really cool feeling.”

The “Road to Daytona” program gives competitors from nearly all divisions of ARCA competition the opportunity for seat time at Daytona.

VanDoorn, 24 and of Coopersville, Mich., is now a three-time ARCA CRA Super Series champion and won the 2012 title for Kaos Motorsports. Braden, 18 and of Wheeling, W.V., is the 2012 Super Series Rookie of the Year.

Eilen, 27 and of Hampton, Minn., won the 2012 Midwest Tour championship five years after becoming the series’ first race winner. Carlson, 25 and of Cedar Springs, Mich., won the ARCA Gold Cup Series championship, contested at ARCA-owned Toledo and Flat Rock Speedways, as well as Spartan (Mich.) Speedway.

Andy Hillenburg, a two-time Daytona winner and the 1995 ARCA champion, is assisting each Road to Daytona driver in the test session. His Fast Track High Performance Driving School, ARCA’s Official Driving School, is providing the cars and support for the test.

“The first time that I came here to drive at Daytona myself, I didn’t even have a van ride around the track,” Hillenburg said. “I had not even been on the race track and here it was go out and run 195 mph. That was over 20 years ago. That’s the way it was.

“Now these kids can be a lot better driver and prepared to capitalize on the opportunities they get and make better racing for all of us.”

The three-day ARCA test continues through Sunday. A section of the Oldfield Grandstands will be open free to the public with access available through the lobby of the Daytona International Speedway ticket office.

Tickets for NASCAR’s biggest, richest and most prestigious race – the 55th annual Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 24 – are available at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.

  • ARCA Changing Minimum Age Requirement at Pocono and Kentucky

ARCA Changing Minimum Age Requirement at Pocono and Kentucky

ARCA(TOLEDO, Ohio) – Officials from the Automobile Racing Club of America have announced several important procedural changes for the 2013 ARCA Racing Series season.

Beginning in 2013, drivers aged 17 years old may be considered for eligibility to drive in race events at Pocono Raceway and Kentucky Speedway. Drivers seeking approval will be subject to meeting specific and strict guidelines, including but not limited to a thorough driving experience review, successful participation in a minimum of five approved ARCA Racing Series events, and an ARCA-sanctioned open test at the intended track.

The change will give 17-year-old drivers three more races to enter in 2013, bringing the potential season total for a 17-year-old to 16 races.

“In recognizing the growing youth movement in stock car racing, we are proud to have reached agreements with two partner tracks that will allow qualified, up-and-coming drivers to begin their speedway careers at a younger age,” said ARCA president and CEO Ron Drager. “We appreciate the commitment from those tracks to assist in our drivers’ development.”

ARCA also announced that in 2013, the starting field for the February 16 race at Daytona International Speedway will be 40 positions. The first 30 positions will be set by time trials, and the remaining 10 will be set by the provisional procedure listed on the entry blank.

Starting fields for other tracks 0.75 mile or larger will hold a maximum of 36 positions. The first 30 positions will be set by time trials, and the remaining six will be set by the provisional procedure listed on the entry blank. ARCA notified teams of the changes in a bulletin yesterday.

Testing for the 2013 season will begin Friday and last through Sunday at Daytona International Speedway. The 2013 season will begin with ARCA’s 50th consecutive annual appearance at Daytona on Saturday, February 16, televised live on SPEED.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards has crowned 30 ARCA national champions in 60 seasons since 1953, and has toured over 200 race tracks in 26 states since its inception. The series has tested the abilities of drivers and race teams over the most diverse schedule of stock car racing events in the world, visiting tracks ranging from 0.375 mile to 2.66 miles in length on both paved and dirt surfaces as well as a left- and right-turn road course in its most recent season.

Founded by John and Mildred Marcum in 1953 in Toledo, Ohio, the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) is recognized among the leading sanctioning bodies in the country. Having completed its sixth decade after hundreds of thousands of miles of racing, ARCA administers over 100 race events each season in four professional touring series – the ARCA Racing Series, the ARCA CRA Super Series, the ARCA Truck Series, and new in 2013, the ARCA Midwest Tour – in addition to local weekly events at Ohio’s Toledo Speedway and Michigan’s Flat Rock Speedway.

Every year, the road to the National Football League goes through Mobile with players showcasing their talent in Mobile’s Senior Bowl Game. The Senior Bowl will kick off at 4 p.m. ET (3 p.m. CT) on Saturday, January 26, and is college football’s premier senior showcase event, annually featuring the nation’s best senior collegiate football stars and top NFL draft prospects on teams coached by NFL coaching staffs.

“The Senior Bowl is dedicated to showcasing up-and-coming talent and what better way to promote our game than showcasing an up-and-coming race car driver from Mobile,” said Phil Savage, executive director of the Senior Bowl. “Working with the Moose is another example of how the Senior Bowl is reaching out in to the community to form new partnerships.”

The test will open the on-track preparation for ARCA’s 50th annual appearance at Daytona on Saturday, February 16.

“Our Daytona effort is all about being from Mobile and it doesn’t get any bigger or better in Mobile than the Senior Bowl,” Praytor said. “The Senior Bowl is such a big part of our family with my grandfather having been part of the Senior Bowl committee from almost the beginning, so it’s a real honor to be associated with the game.”

The Praytor family will hold its 44th annual Senior Bowl tailgate party at this year’s game; it has become one of the must-stop parties in Tent City.

INDYCAR NEWS AND NOTES – Dec. 12, 2012

indycarlogoToday’s IZOD IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights and Mazda Road to Indy headlines:

    1. Hunter-Reay ready to roll at Race of Champions

    2. Rain doesn’t dampen on track action

    3. Christmas a special time for drivers

    4. Sebring test allows new KV teammates to work out details

    5. Of note

    1. Hunter-Reay ready to roll at Race of Champions:

Ryan Hunter-Reay was set to roll of pit lane Dec. 12 at Sebring International Raceway in the Andretti Autosport-prepared car for his final day of testing of 2012. The exercise, while benefitting preparations for the 2013 IZOD IndyCar Series season, won’t impact his next on-track adventure.

The reigning series champion will join other motorsports stars from around the globe to compete this weekend in the Race of Champions in Bangkok, Thailand. The event is being staged for the 25th consecutive year.

Drivers will battle head-to-head in identical machinery on a specially constructed tarmac track with two parallel lanes winding their way around Rajamangala Stadium. Drivers also will pair up for the ROC Nations Cup.

Benito Guerra Jr. of Mexico, FIA’s Production World Rally Championship this season, will partner with Hunter-Reay in the Nations Cup’s first “Team Americas.” World Rally Championship driver Sebastien Ogier was the 2011 “Champion of Champions.”

Hunter-Reay, who is in the same group as seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher in the individual competition, could wind up driving a KTM X-Bow, a Gallardo Super Trofeo, an Audi R8 LMS or even a VW Scirocco.

“I don’t have any of those toys to mess around with at home (to prepare),” Hunter-Reay said. “So I think you have to rely on your skill set that you kind of worked on over the years and jumping from car to car, sports car to Indy cars to some of the heavier stuff that I’ve driven — stock cars and stuff.

“So we’ll see. It should be fun. I was a little bit disappointed that there is not some type of open wheel formula car in there, but I think it definitely went more for the rally drivers there. But, hey, it’s still a car. It has four wheels and a steering wheel, two pedals, three pedals, you have to make it work.”

Other drivers scheduled to compete in the 2012 Race of Champions:

Michael Schumacher, seven-time Formula 1 World Champion

Sebastian Vettel, three-time Formula 1 World Champion

Jorge Lorenzo, two-time MotoGP World Champion

Mick Doohan, five-time 500cc MotoGP World Champion

Jamie Whincup, four-time V8 Supercar Champion

David Coulthard, 13-time Formula 1 grand prix winner

Tom Kristensen, eight-time Le Mans 24-Hour race winner

Andy Priaulx, three-time World Touring Car Champion

Benito Guerra Jr., 2012 FIA Production World Rally Champion

Romain Grosjean, Current Lotus F1 driver and 2011 GP2 Series champion

Sebastien Ogier, World Rally Championship driver and 2011 “Champion of Champions”

While the event is a chance to race against some of the biggest names in motorsports, and may get his competitive juices flowing, Hunter-Reay said he’s looking forward to the whole experience.

“Just really the whole atmosphere,” Hunter-Reay said. “Being invited to the Race of Champions in the first place is a pretty big deal for me. It’s a race I’ve watched for a while and something I’ve wanted to be a part of. It’s going to be something racing those guys and really getting to know them and meeting some new people from around the world of motorsports.

“You really have a lot of respect for these different talent pools that come from F1, MotoGP, rally driving, and at the same time, you can learn quite a bit too about how these guys approach the challenge of the Race of Champions. I’m looking forward to it.”

    2. Rain doesn’t dampen on track action: Drivers got on the 1.65-mile circuit in earnest about 1 p.m. after the racing surfaced dried from an overnight thunderstorm and morning sprinkles.

Twelve drivers are expected to participate in the final day of testing for the season Dec. 13, including former Star Mazda champion and Firestone Indy Lights winner Conor Daly in the No. 14 ABC Supply car for A.J. Foyt Racing and 2012 Firestone Indy Lights champion Tristan Vautier in the No. 77 Schmidt Hamilton HP Motorsports car.

Vautier’s proud father, Eric, is in town to watch the proceedings. Regular driver Simon Pagenaud was in the car Dec. 12 and will be available for instruction during Vautier’s track time.

Justin Wilson was in the No. 19 Dale Coyne Racing car. He said he’s not signed for the 2013 season yet.

    3. Christmas a special time for drivers: As the father of a young daughter, Helio Castroneves knows the importance of Christmas to a little boy or girl.

That’s why he and Team Penske teammate Will Power joined members of the Indianapolis Colts to help 40 deserving children shop for Christmas gifts for their families and friends at an Indianapolis Meijer store on Dec. 11.

“My daughter understands Christmas and talks about Santa, so when you see the smile of the kids as they are choosing gifts for their families and friends, it makes you feel good,” Castroneves said.

“For me it’s awesome to see their faces. My heart smiles and it makes everyone smile. This is a great thing that Meijer is doing. I’ve done this for three years and I have fun every time.”

The children, ranging from ages 7-10, were given Meijer gift cards to help them buy anything they wanted in the store. Power, who assisted a pair of sisters with their gifts, said he was more than willing to help out again.

“We did this last year, and you get a lot of satisfaction from doing this,” Power said. “These kids deserve to have a fantastic Christmas and I’m happy to help them and Meijer make it happen.

“I had fun picking out Barbie dolls and pink this and that. They even picked out some Angry Birds gifts, which they said is something I related to.”

Here a sampling of how some IZOD IndyCar Series drivers will spend the holidays and their most-memorable Christmas gifts.

Dario Franchitti: “Christmas in Scotland is a lot like Christmas here. We’ll spend one year in Scotland with my family and next year in Tennessee with (wife) Ashley’s family. It’s very similar. We don’t have Thanksgiving over there, so we tend to do the Turkey and eat a lot more on Christmas Day.”

“Two gifts stick out. When I was 8, I got a motocross bike. That was a big thing because I couldn’t race cars because I was too young. So I got a motocross bike, which I wasn’t really good on, but it was cool. In Christmas 1984, I got this helmet. I pestered the life out of (my dad) for this helmet that was called a GPA. It was the same helmet that Gilles Villeneuve wore. I got one of those and that was one that I always remember. I don’t have it anymore, so I’m looking for one. Still trying to find it.”

Marco Andretti: “Normally, I’m a very traditional guy. I normally go to my mom’s parents and then I’ll go to my dad’s parents – which is my neighbor (Mario Andretti). This year, I’m going to Thailand with Ludacris and Kevin Hart and our girlfriends. It’s a 10-day trip to hang out and work out. We do a once a year getaway before the season and we chose Thailand.

“Best gift was a snowmobile. It’s always nice as a kid to get a new toy like that.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay: “I don’t have enough time on my hands to shop for everyone. I’ve been traveling a lot, I’ve been to London, Milan already this month and I’m headed to Bangkok for Race of Champions. By the time I get back, it will be Christmas. The Gordon clan will be coming from California. It should be a lot of fun. It will be a packed house, but that’s how we like it.”

“My best present was a surfboard. I’m not sure if I got my first go-kart for Christmas, but it was either a surfboard or a go-kart.”

James Hinchcliffe: “Holidays at Casa de Hinch have been celebrated without me because I’ve been gone most of the last few holiday seasons. It only gets worse for here. My own home will be empty, because I’ll be meeting my family in some warmer climates.”

“The most memorable Christmas gift has to be my Greg Moore helmet. It’s a 99, raced-used helmet and it’s one of my most treasured possessions, so that tops the list…that or my Tamagotchi.”

JR Hildebrand: “Pretty much both sides of my family are in the Bay Area, so I’ll go home for the holidays. We hang out with my mom’s side of the family on Christmas Eve in San Francisco, and then my dad’s side of the family comes to our house in Sausalito on Christmas Day. Everybody stuffs their face and exchanges gifts. It’s the one time of the year that I’m almost guaranteed to be home. My birthday is just a couple weeks after Christmas and I usually stay out there. My buddies are home from college or off work, so it’s a good time for me to re-connect with them in the offseason. You get to see almost everybody over the course of a few days. A lot of families don’t have that chance.”

“The best Christmas present? I got a mountain bike. I was big into mountain biking and raced them, and I got my first full-suspension Schwinn when I was in the eighth grade. I’d been eyeing this bike at a store down the street for months and it was on sale and it kept getting cut down. One day I went in there and the guy said we sold it to this guy from Mill Valley. I was pissed. I thought for sure this was going to be my gift and I went to my parents and told them, ‘Guys, come on. This was the one thing I wanted and it was on sale.’ They were like, “Sorry. Whatever.” Then they were the ones who bought it. I think because of the turmoil I went through emotionally, that was the best surprise.”

Ed Carpenter: “(Christmas) changes a lot when you have kids, but it’s a lot more fun because it all becomes about them. It’s fun doing everything we do leading up to Christmas and watching how excited Makenna and Ryder get for Christmas and Santa. This Christmas we’ll be adding a new arrival, so it will make it that much better.”

“There are different things over the years that I’ve liked, but I remember one year my Grandpa – my mom’s dad – got me bunk beds when I was really young. I also got tickets Vanilla Ice one year. It was my first concert.

Charlie Kimball: “We are having a quiet Christmas this year. My sister and her husband are staying in England this year, so we’ll spend one night with one side of the family and Christmas Day with the other. Traditionally we do a Mexican Christmas dinner, so we have tamales and enchiladas and big bowl of Chili and some garlic bread. Then we have fresh pears for dessert. It’s a nice way to come together and we try to enjoy the opportunity to get together.”

“The best gift I ever got was two, actually. My dad’s old go-kart, which came in three refrigerator-sized boxes of parts as well as a box with his old toolbox in it with a set of tools and nice inscription. So not only did I get a set of tools, but I got a project to use my tools on.”

Josef Newgarden: “The best Christmas gift I ever got was a motorized scooter. A GoPed, really.”

Graham Rahal: “Nowadays, Christmas isn’t just one day. It’s really a few days because you have to travel between Indianapolis, Columbus, Ohio and Chicago. We try to find everybody where they are at. When we do, we celebrate just like everyone else. We get up in the morning, open presents – although the older you get, the fewer presents you get.

“My birthday and Christmas are right next to each other, and one year, I got my dad’s 1986 Championship-winning gold Rolex. It was the gift he got when he won the championship. It was one of my very few prized possessions. It sits in a secure place and never really sees daylight or time outside of the box.”

Scott Dixon: This year, we’ve already been back to New Zealand, so we’ll be off to England to see Emma’s family. Now that the girls have grown up a bit, they like to see their cousins and run around with them. Elf on a Shelf has been big this year in keeping them in tow. You can see when Billy the Elf sees they are being naughty. It’s been a big bargaining tool. But Poppy and Tilly are getting excited for Christmas. You see they get excited when we put the tree up or when they see Santa or things about the reindeer. It’s a lot of fun and brings the excitement of Christmas back to you.

“For me, bikes and motorbikes were big presents. I think I got go karts when I first started racing. Anything that was motorized and went quick were the best gifts, but I remember getting my first bike.”

    4. Sebring test allows new KV teammates to work out details: Simona de Silvestro introduced Tony Kanaan to individuals associated with a sponsor as “my new teammate.” Soon she’ll drop the “new.”

De Silvestro, who competed the previous three IZOD IndyCar Series seasons with HVM Racing, joined KV Racing Technology and Kanaan in late October for the 2013 season. They’ve tested the Nos. 11 and 78 cars at Barber Motorsports Park and Texas Motor Speedway in advance of closing out the year at Sebring International Raceway this week.

“It’s been going pretty well,” said de Silvestro, whose new livery will be unveiled in January. “The Barber test was a little strange because it was added at the last minute, but it was a really productive day and we both ended up quick and worked through some things with the cars. The Texas test was a Chevy test so we went through a whole program with them. Working with TK has been a lot of fun.

“I think we’re still learning how to work together because I’ve never had a teammate in IndyCars and that’s all new to me. Having someone right there in the seat at the same time, giving feedback and listening to what he thinks — especially on the ovals — is great. I hope to learn a lot as we develop this team, which has been working really hard. The Barber and Texas tests I was learning a lot of things, like the guys’ names, and now we’re starting to click. This test is important to jump-start the (2013) season.”

Kanaan, who will enter his third season with KV Racing Technology, said he’s enjoyed the camaraderie with the crews through the three test sessions and looks forward to a productive 2013 season.

“We’re still getting to know each other, but she’s a very easy-going person so I don’t see any problems,” he said. “Everything is new to her. She’s fast and finally now she’s got to a team where she has the potential to show her talent.”

This past weekend, Kanaan joined Helio Castroneves and Rubens Barrichello in competing in the final round of the Brazilian stock car series. He also drove in the penultimate race last month.

“It was a good experience to race in front of the (Brazilian) fans again at Interlagos, a place where I grew up,” he said.

    5. Of note: Sam Schmidt announced he has brought on Canadian businessman and former race driver Ric Peterson as an equity partner in his race team, which fields entries in the IZOD IndyCar Series and Firestone Indy Lights…New NBC Sports Channel announcer Leigh Diffey is making the rounds at the track to meet/re-introduce himself to drivers and team members. … Will Power has a wedding to attend in January in Australia as his older brother, Nick, is engaged. NOTEBOOK: Changes At The Top

[media-credit name=”Getty Images for NASCAR” align=”alignright” width=”262″]D.J. Kennington - NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Series Awards[/media-credit]CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It seems every time D.J. Kennington comes to Charlotte, something life-altering happens for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series champion.

Two years ago, as Kennington celebrated his first series championship, he proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Jamie, on the stage at the end of his speech. Saturday night, he headed back to the Charlotte Convention Center’s Crown Ballroom at the NASCAR Hall of Fame just days removed from the birth of his first child, a son named Chase.

“It’s been awesome – the highlight of my life, actually, last week with the birth of my son, Chase. Everybody told me that your championships and everything won’t mean anything when you have your first child, but they still mean a lot. I tell you what, it was probably the most special day of my life.”

Kennington was one of seven NASCAR champions honored at the Touring Series Awards.

“I often said that winning races was more important than championships – because I’d never won one,” Kennington said. “After winning the one in 2010, I realized how special it was. To win it again, it’s a dream come true.”

Now that he’s won two of the last three Canadian Tire Series championships, Kennington has no plans to slow down. In fact, he said that winning only makes you want to win more.

He’s not alone in feeling like that.

2010 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion Burt Myers stood backstage Saturday and talked about what it’s like to have reached the top of the mountain – and then have to watch as somebody else celebrates a championship of their own a year or two down the road.

“After I won my first one at Bowman Gray (Stadium), Tim Brown told me that I wasn’t ever going to want to lose one again,” said Myers, who won a total of seven Modified races this year on the Tour and in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition. “He said it’s awful having to watch someone else get all the glory. I’ve never forgotten that.”

“After you’ve been here and done it, to not be the guy that’s getting all the accolades, it makes you burn,” Kennington said. “I just think each one gets sweeter. I think the first one, obviously, is the most memorable for me because it took 17 years to get it.

“They say that once you get one they come easier, but I don’t think they come any easier. I just think you have more experience and becomes not as much of a job to get it done. That’s what I’m most proud of is that we’ve been able to do it twice. It wasn’t a fluke. Hopefully, we can get another one here and make it a three-peat.”

Kennington is focused both on life at home and on racing next season.

“I’m pretty proud of my wife, to go through all that with her,” he said. “I wish she could be here tonight, and she’s a little sad she can’t be here, too. But she’s at home with the little guy, and I can’t wait to get home and see them tomorrow.”

Kennington’s not the only champion this year to have added a child to the mix. NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion George Brunnhoelzl III had a daughter in the middle of the season to become a father for the first time.

“It is true – your priorities do change, but we still love racing and still enjoy it,” Brunnhoelzl said. “You relax a little bit more during the week, but when you get to the race track it’s business as usual.”

BUDDING RIVALRY: There was an interesting meeting in the Crown Ballroom during the dinner break Saturday night, as NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby and Euro Racecar NASCAR Touring Series champion Ander Vilarino spent several minutes talking about their racing background.

Vilarino marveled at Coby’s No. 52 Modified, noting that the open wheels were a lot like what he was used to overseas.

“They look a lot like a prototype with the wheels,” Vilarino said.

“Oh, I’m sure your prototypes have a lot more technology than one of these,” Coby laughed.

Vilarino has thought about racing in the United States. He said he is working on trying to find sponsorship for some races, but he would settle for one race.

“I would really love one Nationwide (Series) race on a road course,” Vilarino said. “If you’re going to do one, why not try one of those?”

“You’d probably do really well,” Coby said, noting that he also thought Vilarino might enjoy racing Modifieds, too. “(Modifieds) are really agile. Because everything is so closed in, you can really feel what’s going in with your car. You can feel it in the seat.”

For now, Vilarino’s familiarity with Modifieds will have to remain the videos he’s seen on the internet of the cars racing at historic Bowman Gray Stadium.

“There’s the one, have you seen it?” Vilarino asked before pointing to the windshield on Coby’s car. “The driver gets out of the car and stomps his foot right here! It is amazing.”

ONE LINERS: There were plenty of quality one-liners during the acceptance remarks from the championship car owners and drivers Saturday. Some of the highlights:

NASCAR Toyota Mexico Series champion Jorge Goeters, reading from a sheet of paper pulled from his jacket pocket to begin his speech: “Dear Santa, for Christmas I would like… Oh, sorry. That’s the wrong one.”

NASCAR Canadian Tire Series championship owner Doug Kennington, to crew chief David Wight: “David, D.J. has given us our third-generation driver. It’s up to you to make the third-generation crew chief.”

Euro Racecar NASCAR Touring Series champion Ander Vilarino, closing his remarks by issuing a challenge to the rest of the NASCAR champions: “See you at the Battle at the Beach.”

D.J. Kennington to his crew chief, David Wight: “I taught you everything I know, and that’s why you’re getting better.”

Kennington again, this time talking about his father and car owner, Doug Kennington: “Everybody whines and sniffles about how much horsepower we have, and it’s nothing but hard work from that guy.”

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby, on his first career title: “I read somewhere that the ancient Mayan civilization predicted that the world was going to end in a couple of weeks. Based on the fact that I am standing up here as the 2012 Whelen Modified Tour champion, we might all be in a little bit of trouble.”

NASCAR K&N Pro Series West team owner Gene Price, who watched his drivers Dylan Kwasniewski and Greg Pursley race for the championship between them in the season finale: “Dylan and Greg may have raced 50 miles at Phoenix, but I’m pretty sure I paced 75 between those two pit stalls.”

And, finally, Kwasniewski leading the ballroom in round of “Happy Birthday” for one of his crew members – the continuation of a year-long battle of pranks between the two.

    Touring Series Champions Honored

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – NASCAR history was recognized and its future celebrated Saturday evening as seven champions in NASCAR’s touring series were honored at the Night of Champions Touring Awards at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

The ceremony featured the champions and top drivers from the regional touring series in North America and Europe, who gathered for the special year-end event. It’s the first season a driver from Europe has been honored at the event.

The 2012 champions included Kyle Larson (NASCAR K&N Pro Series East), Dylan Kwasniewski (NASCAR K&N Pro Series West), D.J. Kennington (NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1), Jorge Goeters (NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series), Ander Vilarino (Euro-Racecar NASCAR Touring Series), Doug Coby (NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour) and George Brunnhoelzl III (NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour).

    • Larson, of Elk Grove, Calif., the 20-year-old open-wheel star burst onto the stock-car scene this season by winning the championship and rookie of the year honors.
    • Kwasniewski, of Las Vegas, Nev., at 17 years of age became the youngest champion in the nearly 60-year history of the season.
    • Kennington, of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, earned his second title in three years by winning a series-record seven races.
    • Goeters, of Mexico City, claimed his second championship, but first since the series came under the NASCAR umbrella in 2007.
    • Vilarino, of Donostia, Spain, won six races en route to the inaugural Euro-Racecar championship.
    • Coby, of Milford, Conn., earned his first championship on the power of five wins, the most by a tour driver since 2007.
    • Brunnhoelzl, of West Babylon, N.Y., won his third Southern Modified Tour title in the last four seasons.

“The 2012 racing season for our U.S. and international touring series was absolutely remarkable,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president, regional and touring series. “All seven championships came down to the last race; most down to the last lap.

“Tonight reaffirms that NASCAR stock-car racing transcends languages. It transcends origins and ethnicities. It transcends borders and time zones, and appeals to race fans everywhere. Tonight also illustrates that the future of our sport is bright.”

In addition to the championship awards, each series rookie of the year was honored. The Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award winners were Larson from the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, Austin Dyne from the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, Keith Rocco from the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and Danny Bohn from the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour. Martin Roy of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, Rubén Garcia Jr. and Javier Villa of the Euro Racecar Series were recognized as the top rookies in their series.

The Most Popular Driver Awards for each series were also presented during the ceremony. The seven drivers honored with the prestigious award were Chase Elliott in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, Cassie Gannis of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, Ray Courtemanche Jr. in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1, Pepe Montaño of the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series, Freddy Nordstrom from the Euro-Racecar NASCAR Touring Series, Ryan Preece from the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and Bohn from the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour. Elliott was the only repeat winner in the category.

The top 10 drivers and car owners from each of NASCAR’s touring series also were recognized during the gala event – which featured Mike Joy and Dr. Dick Berggren of NASCAR on FOX along with Monica Palumbo of SPEED as co-hosts. Simplified provided the musical entertainment. The awards ceremony was streamed live online at www.nascarhometracks.com – the official online home of NASCAR’s touring series – in English, French and Spanish.

The awards celebration capped a week of festivities in the Charlotte area aimed at providing the top drivers and track operators in NASCAR’s weekly and touring series an up close and personal look at the hub of stock-car racing. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards Banquet on Friday honored champions from across North America in the series that is NASCAR’s grassroots foundation.

INDYCAR doubleheader, new grandstands and ticket prices set to turbocharge the experience for all ticketholders in 2013

TORONTO, December 10, 2012 – Tickets to the 2013 Honda Indy Toronto are now on sale, and they come with a generous dose of “turbocharged” excitement and value. For the first time in its history, the event will feature two official, fully-sanctioned IZOD IndyCar Series races, one with standing start on Saturday and a second with a rolling start on Sunday. Each event will be full length, with full points and full prize money.

“Back-to-back IZOD IndyCar Series races in one weekend offer huge value to fans,” said Charlie Johnstone, Vice President and General Manager of the Honda Indy Toronto. “Fans can watch Saturday’s race and then walk over to the city’s nightlife or entertainment districts for a typical night on the town, while the Sunday race will offer more suspense and build-up.”

The release of tickets for 2013 also features important changes to seating. Promoters will build three new “super-structure” grandstands – one at Turn 10 (consolidating three grandstands), a taller structure for the Dr Pepper Grandstand at Turn 11, and a Turn 3 Grandstand that will see the addition of 15 rows. Each of the three new grandstands offers better sightlines, more seating options and greater comfort. The switch to larger grandstands affords an important additional benefit: greater track-side access for General Admission ticket holders and wandering fans looking for multiple viewpoints.

To top it off, event organizers are introducing a new ticketing strategy that is focused on simplicity and greater value. Site access starts at $35 for General Admission tickets, while reserved seating prices start at $60 for single-day tickets in Turn 10 and the Dr Pepper Grandstand (Turn 11). New this year, all purchases of 2-day upper-level seats in Pit Lane, Start/Finish and Turn 3 Grandstands come with a complimentary 3-day IndyCar Paddock Pass valued at $45.

“In its raw form, professional auto racing in the heart the city is an awesome experience,” said Johnstone. “With the improved seating, better views, new ticket pricing and more concessions, vendors and exhibitors, 2013 will be the year to try the Honda Indy Toronto experience.”
