  • Tracy Hines Hits the Desert for a Pair of Races at Canyon Speedway Park

Tracy Hines Hits the Desert for a Pair of Races at Canyon Speedway Park

New Castle, Ind.—Oct. 25, 2012— Arizona used to be a haven of sprint car racing, at the beginning and end of each season, as drivers from the Midwest would escape the cold by heading to the desert. That trend slowly began to disappear in recent years, but officials at Canyon Raceway Park in Peoria, Ariz., have been working hard to resurrect the tradition. Tracy Hines has done his part to support the efforts at Canyon as he raced in the Hall of Fame Classic last year, as well as competing in the Winter Freeze at the facility this past winter. He will return to the semi-banked oval three more times in 2012, including for a pair of races this weekend.

Hines will take to the track for the 12th Annual Parker Store Hall of Fame Classic at Canyon Speedway Park with the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series on Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27 for two full racing programs, piloting the MP Environmental DRC. Each night will begin with time trials, followed by heat races and a main event. A strong field of nearly 40 cars is currently expected for the two-night event.

“The Hall of Fame Classic was a great event last year and there seems to be a lot of excitement again this year,” said Hines. “We’ll be racing quite a bit over the next few weeks at Canyon in both the sprint car and midget, so all the laps we have there already this year should help quite a bit. There are definitely a lot of great fans in that area, who really enjoy sprint car racing.”

Hines was victorious three times and finished among the Top-Five in five of the six rounds that comprised the Winter Freeze at Canyon Speedway Park in late January and early February to win the overall championship of the mini-series that pit the ASCS Canyon Region versus the USAC West Coast Series. Each of the six main events that were part of the Winter Freeze were 30 laps in distance.

“We certainly had a lot of success at Canyon in the winter and hopefully we can continue that this weekend,” he noted. “There is going to be a lot of good cars there and we’ll have our work cut out for us. We’ll use some of the things we learned back in the winter and have a good baseline to go off when we roll the car out of the trailer on Friday.”

Hines won for the first time during the Winter Freeze on Jan. 29, which was the third round of the event and followed that up with a triumph in the fifth round on Feb. 3. He capped off the six-race mini-series with a victory in the finale on Feb. 4 to lock up the title. The 2002 USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series champion finished second in the second round of the Winter Freeze on Jan. 28, leading a number of laps, before Jon Stanbrough took the top spot in the late going, and was also second in the third round on Jan. 29. He opened the Winter Freeze with an 11th-place showing on January 27.

“It was a pretty remarkable stretch of races we had during the Winter Freeze,” shared Hines. “When you are on a roll like that it definitely helps to run the same track and set-up night after night. The surface will probably be a little bit different now in the fall, since there’s been a full season of racing on the track, but we’ll be ready to adjust and adapt accordingly.”

The USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series made their debut at the three-eighths-mile just outside of Phoenix last year, with Hines finishing 13th in each of the two main events. In the opener of the event, he finished fourth in the first eight-lap heat race to earn a spot in the 30-lap main event, after opening the night by recording the 21st-fastest lap in time trials of the 35 entries. The second night saw Hines time in 13th and finish third in the first heat to punch his ticket into the A-Feature.

Hines enters the two-night event at Canyon Raceway Park fourth in the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series championship standings. He has two wins with the series this season, to go along with 19 Top-10 finishes of which 11 are Top-Five performances. The native of New Castle, Ind., was victorious in a midget last weekend in the Kokomo Klash at Kokomo Speedway in his home state of Indiana, while finishing third in the sprint car feature that headlined the event.

“We were able to win in the midget last weekend at Kokomo and hopefully can carry a little of that momentum out west,” Hines said. “We have four more sprint races this year and that’s four more chances to get wins. Like most every race nowadays, you have to put yourself in a good position all night, have a good car and have a little luck on your side as well.”

Tracy Hines Racing would like to thank: MP Environmental, DRC, AFCO Racing Shocks, Bell Race Gear, FatHeadz, Kenny’s Components, Race Bumpers, Rod End Supply, Schoenfeld Headers and Stanton Racing for their continued support.

Kevin Swindell Parlays Successful ARCA Season into NASCAR Nationwide Series Opportunity with Biagi-DenBeste Racing

Concord, NC (October 24, 2012) — Coming off an impressive season driving for Venturini Motorsports, standout driver Kevin Swindell has teamed up with NASCAR team Biagi-DenBeste Racing and will compete next month driving the No.98 entry in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) events at Texas Motor Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Swindell who scored his first ARCA victory earlier this year at Chicagoland Speedway most recently finished the season with an impressive runner-up finish at Kansas Speedway driving the No.55 VMS – CURB Records Toyota.

Swindell, who is no stranger to the “main-stage”, is poised and ready to showcase his talent at the next level.

The three-time Chili Bowl Sprint Car Champion has previously competed in four NNS races, with a best start of fifth at Dover International Speedway in 2011. This season, Swindell has made eight starts in the ARCA Racing Series, securing seven top-five starts along with four top-five finishes. The young driver scored his first stock car win at Chicagoland Speedway in July after earning the pole and leading every lap.

“I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel of a Nationwide car,” commented Swindell. “We put a lot of effort into our ARCA program this year with Venturini Motorsports and our success paid off giving me this great opportunity with the Biagi-DenBeste team. They’ve (Biagi-DenBeste) done really well and had strong finishes in each race they have entered. I am excited to team up with them for Texas and Homestead.”

After taking a hiatus from racing, Biagi-DenBeste Racing has returned to the NNS to compete in five races this season. The team earned a best starting spot of 11th at Atlanta Motor Speedway and a season-best finish of 12th earlier this month at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“We are really pleased to have Kevin in the car,” said team co-owner Fred Biagi. “Right now we are only interested in running races that we can do right and this will be a great baseline for 2013. We know Kevin can get it done. With his talent and the Swindell storied history in racing, we are expecting great things out of him.”

Swindell will first take to the track for Biagi-DenBeste Racing at Texas Motor Speedway on Friday, November 2 for practice. Live coverage of Saturday night’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge will begin at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN. The race can also be heard on PRN.

    DICK JORDAN 12-209

SPENCER TRACING DOWN USAC HISTORY AS CRA SPRINTS JOIN NATIONALS AT CANYON

Mike Spencer of Temecula, Calif. is on the verge of USAC immortality. Only 14 drivers, of the 301 prior to 2012 who have won USAC driving titles, own five or more. Mike is in the stretch run of a fifth straight championship in a single series this weekend as he pursues the 2012 AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Car crown.

Nobody previoius has ever strung together five straight in a single USAC series – EVER. He holds a 323-point lead over Nic Faas in the current standings. With less than 300 points remaining in the final four races, Spencer will become the first driver to achieve the amazing five-peat!

Mike will become the ninth driver to achieve at least five titles in a single series. A.J. Foyt won seven in Indy cars and Mel Kenyon won seven in National Midgets. Rich Vogler won five in National Midgets, Levi Jones five in National Sprints, Butch Hartman five in Stock Cars, Tony Hunt five in Western Sprints, Sleepy Tripp five in Western Midgets and Michael Lang five in Speedrome Midgets.

Spencer is among top AMSOIL USAC/CRA Sprint Car drivers who will compete in this weekend’s Arizona Motorsports “Hall of Fame” events at Canyon Speedway Park at Peoria, Ariz. The events, slated Friday and Saturday night, also award AMSOIL USAC National Sprint Car points.

The AMSOIL USAC National and USAC/CRA series conclude November 2-3 in the Budwesier “Oval Nationals” at the Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway.

Spencer trails Damion Gardner by two wins n the all-time standings for USAC/CRA Sprints at Perris. He ranks third behind Gardner and Cory Kruseman on the all-time USAC/CRA list.

Faas’ hold on second in the USAC/CRA standings is tenuous at best. He is just 19 ahead of Brody Roa entering this weekend’s races at Peoria.

  • Kimmel Closes 2012 With 10th Consecutive Top Ten

Kimmel Closes 2012 With 10th Consecutive Top Ten

Kansas City, KS. (October 21st, 2012) – Vying for his 10th ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards championship, Frank Kimmel scored his 10th consecutive top ten finish of 2012, finishing 2nd in series points. Kimmel’s championship rival, Chris Buescher, finished in 8th, clinching his first title. Kimmel and the Ansell/Menards team performed well and ran towards the front throughout the entire 99 lap affair, but came up 75 points short of Kimmel’s 10th championship.

Thorsport Racing brought a revamped chassis to Kansas for Kimmel, and showed speed from the opening of practice on Friday morning. Kimmel and the Ansell/Menards team worked primarily on scuffing tires on the new asphalt at Kansas, and it paid off with a six place qualifying effort, his best starting spot on an intermediate track since Pocono in June. Kimmel ran no worse than 6th all race, and avoided the lap 2 carnage in his rear view mirror. Three cars were involved in the race’s first caution period, under which Kimmel reported his pleasure with the Camry’s handling in the first two circuits.

The lap nine restart saw Kimmel protect his 6th place position, and as the field began to string out, navigating lapped traffic would prove to be a major factor in the race. As the leaders began lapping the tail end of the field, Kimmel’s progress would be impeded by the significant speed differential, and halted his drive towards the front, until a lap 31 caution. Kimmel reported his #44 Ansell/Menards Toyota was tight from the center off the corner, but his biggest complaint was the inconsistency of the lapped traffic.

Under than caution, crew chief, Jeriod Prince, brought the nine-time champ to pit road for four tires and an air pressure adjustment. With a pre-race concern about tire wear, Kimmel’s team looked over all four Hoosier tires with no signs of significant wear or blistering. From the lap 37 restart, Kimmel charged to 4th before another yellow slowed the pace on lap 58. Kimmel came down for his second stop, and his last of 2012 for four tires and another adjustment to alleviate his tight condition on corner exit.

On lap 64, Kimmel restarted in the top five and chased down the leaders. While racing for a podium position, Kimmel avoided the wrecking 3rd place car, and took over the position as the race’s fourth caution flew. Kimmel restarted third with 19 laps remaining, but a tight condition forced him to relinquish positions before taking the checkered flag in 6th.

“It was an exciting race. Congratulations to Chris (Buescher). He and his team did a great job. We came home six, and had a 4th or 5th place car. I’m a little disappointed with our finish there at the end. We got shuffled a little bit and our car got tight there at the end. All in all, it was a great season for the Ansell/Menards Toyota. We’ll take second and come next year and go after them.”

The 6th place finish was Kimmel’s 10th consecutive top 10 finish, dating back to a 7th place finish at New Jersey Motorsports Park on July 1st. 2012 saw Kimmel return to victory lane for the first time in four seasons, capturing wins at Lucas Oil Raceway Park and the Illinois State Fairgrounds. His total of 290 laps led is the most laps he has led since the 2008 season. The Thorsport team’s performance, with Kimmel at the controls, has them set up for another championship run in 2013.
“Thorsport Racing went to work, and really did a great job. To take a brand new bunch of guys, only two had any ARCA experience was great. Jeriod Prince did a great job. This was the first time he’s been a crew chief for an entire season. To mesh everybody together, come to the racetrack and be competitive each week, I’m really, really happy.”

  • Morris Becomes First Three-Time Winner Of Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300

Morris Becomes First Three-Time Winner Of Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (October 21, 2012) – Philip Morris held off Lee Pulliam in a final six-lap sprint to the finish to win the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, but it was a gutsy decision on a late restart that proved to be the difference in the race for the four-time NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion.

Morris took the high line and ran deep into Turn 1 on a restart on Lap 126 to get past race leader Matt Bowling. Morris started on the outside and drove deep into the corner to get past Bowling and he remained out front the rest of the afternoon.

For Morris, he was just glad the move worked.

“I didn’t think the car would go through the turn,” said Morris. “I should have wrecked but I didn’t and I got such a good run in to the Turn but I didn’t want to stay up there up high.”

Pulliam held on for second, B.J. Mackey was third with Ryan Wilson and Brandon Butler fourth and fifth, respectively.

Finishing sixth through 10th were C.E. Falk, Matt Bowling, Kris Bowen, Justin Boston and Adam Long.

With the victory, Morris became the first three-time winner of the annual late model stock race at the speedway and it was a great end to a frustrating season for the Ruckersville driver.

“You know it was really frustrating to find out just before the season began that I would not have a ride, but I just knew that meant bigger things were ahead for us,” Morris said. “We tested and ran as much as we could to get ready for this race.”

Pulliam, the 2012 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion, finished one position short in his attempt to become the first repeat winner of the race.

“We had a really good car today and I tried to save my car in the first half of the race, but we weren’t quite where we needed to be in our set up,’ Pulliam said. “The car was a lot better in the second half but we just couldn’t get started on the restarts and I could get past him on the final run to the finish.”

The race was slowed 11 times by caution. A total of 23 cars out of the 42-car field finished the race.

Racing returns to Martinsville Speedway this weekend with the TUMS Fast Relief 500 week. Qualifying is set for Friday, the Kroger 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race is Saturday and the TUMS Fast Relief 500 is Sunday.

The TUMS Fast Relief 500, the seventh race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup, is set to take the green flag on Sunday, October 28. And in between lots of exciting things are happening at and around Martinsville Speedway.

“It’s a great time of the year to be in Martinsville, especially if you are a race fan,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “Over the next few days we’re going to have some of the greatest short-track racing you’ll ever see. The Late Model teams are truly weekend warriors. They do it out of their love for the sport, and the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 gives them the opportunity to race on a big stage.

“Next weekend with the Kroger 200 and the TUMS Fast Relief 500 we’ll have great short-track racing with two tight championship races in play. For the next few days, Martinsville is going to be the heart of the racing world.”

The Late Model teams will spend half of Saturday getting cars through inspection, and then it will be on-track action several hours of practice. Speeds from the final hour of practice, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., will be used to set the field for the four 25-lap heat races on Sunday. The top eight finishers in each heat race will advance to the 150-lap feature.

The final 10 spots in the 42-car feature will be filled through a 50-lap last chance race. This is the first year for the all-heat race format.

“The reaction to the change has been very good,” said Campbell. “Fans I’ve talked to are very excited about it and I think most of the drivers have come around, too.”

The first heat race will begin at noon Sunday and the 150-lap feature should begin around 3:30.

There will be a free on-track autograph session open to all fans at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Once the dust clears from the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300, fans will hardly have time to catch their breath before action picks up for the TUMS Fast Relief 500 and the Kroger 200.

Both series will load into the infield on Thursday afternoon. On-track action begins at 11 a.m. next Friday with Kroger 200 practice, followed by practice for the TUMS Fast Relief 500. Qualifying for the TUMS Fast Relief 500 is set for 3:40 p.m.

Kroger 200 time trials will be at 10:35 Saturday morning, sandwiched between two Sprint Cup practice sessions. The Kroger 200 will take the green flag at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The TUMS Fast Relief 500 will start at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 28.
