  • Newgarden Ready to Patrol the Milwaukee Mile

Newgarden Ready to Patrol the Milwaukee Mile

[media-credit name=”milwaukeeindyfest.com” align=”alignright” width=”210″][/media-credit]Josef Newgarden is comfortable driving fast on four wheels in his Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing (SFHR) Indy car, but on a recent visit to Milwaukee he had a change of pace and cruised the downtown streets with the Milwaukee Police Department’s bicycle patrol.

Newgarden and SFHR return to Milwaukee this weekend for the Milwaukee IndyFest at the historic Milwaukee Mile, and Newgarden may have a few new fans in the stands who dress in blue and wear badges at their day jobs.

“Riding with the Milwaukee police’s bicycle unit was really fun,” Newgarden said. “They showed us all around their downtown areas and it was really cool to see what they do on a daily basis.”

The No. 67 SFHR/Dallara/Honda/Firestone car even sports the traditional police colors of blue, black and white. During his time with the bicycle unit, Newgarden found that he could get used to patrolling the streets.

“I think Ryan Hunter-Reay (fellow IZOD IndyCar Series driver), who also rode with the unit in Milwaukee, would agree that I have some good police officer skills,” he said. “If I wasn’t a race car driver it would definitely be something to think about.”

FHR and Newgarden head to the Milwaukee Mile coming off of a 13th-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway. Newgarden climbed 12 spots during the race after starting last.

The team tested at the Milwaukee Mile on May 29. The short, flat oval is a unique challenge for Newgarden.

“Milwaukee is a very difficult track physically because you’re constantly turning at a very short radius,” Newgarden said. “There’s a lot of load put on the driver because of how much downforce we run. There’s also no banking at Milwaukee so setting up the car will be difficult to master because it’s unlike any other oval we go to.”

The No. 67 car will serve a 10-spot starting grid penalty at the Milwaukee IndyFest race for an unapprovedengine change at Texas Motor Speedway.

The 225-lap Milwaukee IndyFest race will air live Saturday, June 17, at 1 p.m. ET on ABC. It can also be heard on the IMS Radio Network (check local listing) and XM94/Sirius 121.

Honda Power: Honda remains second in the manufacturer point standings with 51 points, closing in on Chevrolet with 54. Lotus remains third with 28 points.

Texas Hold Em’: The one-two finish by Justin Wilson and Graham Rahal in the Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway marked Honda’s third consecutive sweep this season (Dario Franchitti/Scott Dixon; Indianapolis 500 and Dixon/Franchitti; Belle Isle Detroit Grand Prix).

Strictly Bus’iness: Rahal is offering race fans two exclusive tour bus packages from Indianapolis to the Milwaukee IndyFest, June 15 and 16 at the Milwaukee Mile, in conjunction with Andretti Sports Marketing, promoter of the IZOD IndyCar Series race at the track. Helmet of Hope: The Graham Rahal Foundation was selected as one of the 12 charities that will be featured on NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Champion Jimmie Johnson’s helmet, through the Helmet of Hope program. Johnson will wear the helmet in the NSCS race at Infineon Raceway on June 24 in Sonoma, California. In addition to being featured on Johnson’s helmet, the Graham Rahal Foundation will receive a $10,000 grantas well as a Blue Bunny ice cream party. The program, which is part of the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, allows fans and media members across the country to nominate their favorite charities, which are then selected at random.

Rahal Racing For Kids: Before racing on the Milwaukee Mile, Rahal made a stop to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin along with fellow drivers Mike Conway, Sebastian Saavedra, Carlos Munoz and Mike Larrison to visit with children as part of the Racing For Kids program. Founded in Detroit in 1989, Racing For Kids is designed to use the increasing popularity of motorsports to focus public attention and funding on the health care needs of children. In this program, drivers visit children in Children’s Hospitals wherever they race, spending time answering questions about their sport, posing for pictures, signing autographs and handing out the distinctive Racing For Kids memorabilia. Racing For Kids representatives have visited with more than 20,000 young patients in nearly 400 hospitals in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and Australia. In addition, nearly five-million dollars has been raised through donations and specific fund raising events for children’s hospitalsand child health institutions and causes across the country.

Texas Recap: Rahal finished second-place at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS). It was a career best in five starts at the track which also marked the best finish of his 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series season to date. The result came in his 84th IndyCar Series career start. His previous best finish on the 1.5-mile oval occurred in last season’s Firestone Twin 275 double-header, where he finished ninth. Going into the Firestone 550, Rahal showed strength early on by posting the third-quickest time in the qualifying session the night before. Running at the front of the pack for the majority of the race, he ran among the top-five for 153 laps. Rahal nabbed the lead on with only 28 laps remaining and led the second most laps (27 of 228). With just two laps remaining, the No. 38 Service Central Honda made contact with the wall coming out of turn four while Rahal battled understeer. He managed to keep the car going to finish second. Rahal’s previous best finish of the season was fourth at Barber Motorsports Park in the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. The result also marked Honda’s third consecutive 1-2 result this season (Dario Franchitti/Scott Dixon; Indianapolis 500 and Dixon/Franchitti; Belle Isle Detroit Grand Prix.)

In the Points: Following Texas, Rahal moves from 15th position to 11th in the IZOD IndyCar Series point standings with 149 markers, -107 points out of the top spot.

Milwaukee History: Rahal started the 225-lap race from 12th-place and showed strength early on by driving the No. 38 Service Central Honda to the top-five by lap 100 and would cross the finish line in second-place.

Career at Milwaukee: Historically, Rahal has performed well at The Milwaukee Mile. In three starts on the one-mile oval, he scored a fourth-place finish in 2009 and a second-place in 2011.

Rahal on Milwaukee: “I can’t wait for this weekend in Milwaukee. Coming off a great run at Texas, we feel we’re starting to hit our stride as a team, and the results should start to show. We have put in a tremendous amount of effort for this event as it’s always been one of my favorites on the schedule. I’m looking forward to getting out there and running as soon as possible!”

CHARLIE KIMBALL AND THE NO. 83 NOVO NORDISK TEAM

Follow Charlie on Twitter: Follow @racewithinsulin for updates as the driver of the No. 83 NovoLog FlexPen Honda completes his sophomore year with Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing in the IZOD IndyCar Series.

Texas Recap: Kimball finished 23rd at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS). The finish came in his 24th careerIndyCar Series start and his third start at TMS. The Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing team started the race from the 16th position. After holding the spot for a total of eight laps, Kimball would battle for position on the 1.5-mile oval before an early on-track incident would cause him to retire from the race on lap 29 of the 228-lap race. Within the first 30 laps, the No. 83 FlexPen Honda made a half-spin, and took Kimball into the SAFER Barrier off of turn four resulting in contact with the car’s left-side.

Living in the Fast Lane with Diabetes: Follow Kimball’s live blog at www.CharlieKimball.com for race weekend schedules, post-practice thoughts, race day preparations, and behind-the-scenes photos.

Kimball Behind-the-Scenes: Kimball and the Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing crew is featured in a 60-second national television spot, which began running during the week of February 27 and will continue to air for several months. In addition, Novo Nordisk will be running videos about NovoLog FlexPen featuring Kimball and the NNCGR team at track-side events throughout the season.

Welcome to the Team: Novo Nordisk, recently expanded its motorsports initiatives to include an official partnership with INDYCAR as the official diabetes care sponsor of the IZOD IndyCar Series. Novo Nordisk entered the sport in 2009 as the primary sponsor of Kimball in Firestone Indy Lights and advanced to the IZOD IndyCar Series with Chip Ganassi Racing in 2011, where Kimball became the first licensed INDYCAR driver with diabetes to finish the Indianapolis 500.

In the Points: Following Texas, Kimball moves from 11th position to 14th in the IZOD IndyCar Series point standings with 132 markers, -124 points behind the leader.

A Perfect 10: Kimball has top-10 finishes in four of the seven IZOD IndyCar Series races this season, which already doubles his previously tally of two top-10 results in 2011.

Career at Milwaukee: Kimball scored a top-10 finish inFirestone Indy Lights at the Milwaukee Mile during his first attempt on the one-mile track in 2009. In his first IndyCar attempt at the track in 2011, Kimball would start 21st and finish 14th.

Kimball on Milwaukee: “I love the challenge that the Milwaukee Mile presents to IndyCar teams and drivers. Without a lot of banking, there’s not a lot of room for error. It creates some of the best racing all season. Passing is always challenging and the racing is so intense, which makes it fun for us on track. The Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing team will be working hard this weekend to add to our top-10 finishes and gain back some championship points.”

INDYCAR NEWS AND NOTES — June 13, 2012

[media-credit name=”IZOD IndyCar Series” align=”alignright” width=”360″][/media-credit]Today’s IZOD IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights and Mazda Road to Indy headlines

    1. Six drivers, including top two in points, face grid penalties
    2. If you missed it – Ryan Briscoe conference call
    3. Clauson returns to Milwaukee with Indy 500 experience
    4.  Virgin Group partners with TrueCar Racing

    1. Six drivers, including top two in points, face grid penalties: There’s additional intrigue lined up for the Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by XYQ this weekend as Will Power and Scott Dixon — 1-2 in the IZOD IndyCar Series championship standings — will incur 10-grid spot penalties for unapproved engine changes.

Four others in the 25-car field will face the same penalty, including Firestone 550 winner Justin Wilson.

Power, who has won three races this season, takes a 36-point lead over Dixon into the 225-lap race June 16 (1 p.m. ET on ABC) at the Milwaukee Mile. James Hinchcliffe of Andretti Autosport is third (48 points out) and Helio Castroneves is 53 points arrears of his Team Penske teammate.

“It’s going to be hard to win from back there,” said Power, whose engine in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car ceased in the afternoon session.

There’s 90 minutes of practice scheduled June 15 at the Milwaukee Mile preceding two-lap cumulative time qualifications (4 p.m. local).

Dixon’s No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car sustained a failure of its Honda engine with a few minutes left in the morning session of a test at the .875-mile Iowa Speedway on June 12. The crew had installed a fresh engine for the test after contact with the Turn 4 SAFER Barrier on Lap 174 of the Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway on June 9 damaged that powerplant.

Dixon, who won at Belle Isle two weeks ago, had his first DNF since the race in Toronto in 2010. In eight previous starts at Milwaukee in Champ Car and the IZOD IndyCar Series, he has finished in the top 10 seven times — including a victory in 2009 from the fourth starting position.

Last year at Milwaukee, Power advanced 13 positions relative to his starting spot to finish fourth. In two other starts on the historic oval (one each in Champ Car and the IZOD IndyCar Series, he has a best finish of 11th in ’06 with RuSport).

Additionally, A.J. Foyt Racing’s No. 14 ABC Supply car driven by Mike Conway will serve the 10-grid spot penalty for the second consecutive race as its engine quit at the Iowa test. Wilson’s engine in the No. 18 Sonny’s BBQ car for Dale Coyne Racing gave out at Iowa, too.

The No. 15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing car of Takuma Sato and the No. 67 Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing car driven by rookie Josef Newgarden also will receive 10-spot grid penalties for unapproved engine changes at Texas.

    2. If you missed it – Ryan Briscoe conference call:Earlier today, IZOD IndyCar Series driver Ryan Briscoe participated in an INDYCAR Conference Call to preview the Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by XYQ. The Indianapolis 500 pole sitter, who is coming off third-place finish in the Firestone 550 at Texas Motor Speedway on June 9, earned his first IZOD IndyCar Series victory at the Milwaukee Mile in 2008.

A full transcript and a broadcast-quality MP3 are available at media.indycar.com. Selected quotes from the interview are below.

    Q. We seem to be having a series of firsts here with the new car on ovals. Indy was the first oval. Texas was the first high‑banked oval. Milwaukee now is the first flat, short oval. What are you expecting in terms of the car with the aero package?

RYAN BRISCOE: Most of us got to run it in Milwaukee a couple weeks ago after Indianapolis and get a feel for what it’s going to be like. It’s going to be tough. It always is at Milwaukee. But it felt like the tires were definitely going off a lot. That’s going to be a big player in the race, much like we saw in Texas.

You’re going to need a good-handling car from about mid‑stint on. If you get a long green stint, you’re going to see someone with a good car turning laps around the field, and that’s going to have to be the focus — being good over the distance.

    Q. Is there any other characteristic of the new car when you tested there that really caught you by surprise compared to the old car?

RYAN BRISCOE: Within 10 laps I actually turned a couple of laps flat out around the circuit and felt pretty comfortable. I think the downforce numbers and stuff are very similar to the old car. My team did a great job preparing a set‑up that would work well at Milwaukee, but on the test day the wind really picked up a lot in the afternoon. Maybe this car was a bit more sensitive to the wind. It made being consistent really difficult, and the speed dropped off a little bit in the afternoon. It wasn’t so easy anymore.

I think the biggest thing with this new car that’s a bit different than the old one is it seems to wear the rear tires more. So a stint at Milwaukee is probably somewhere up around the 60‑lap range. After about 40 laps, it was really tough to hang on. So if we’re going to have to stay up there and not pit, those last 20 laps of the stint are going to be really challenging, probably more so than the old car.

    Q. Seeing that we have two more this weekend and one more left on the schedule, what are your goals are for the second half of the season?

RYAN BRISCOE:  We’re in a really intense stretch right now. A five-race stretch and a couple of short ovals coming up which are crucial, I believe, to the championship. Anything can happen on these tracks. I think we really need to be focused on running solid like we did at Texas. I feel like it was disappointing not to win Texas, but certainly bringing home the third place was a good point. I think that’s the kind of mentality I need to carry here in Milwaukee and Iowa.

Certainly the rest of the season is to get more podiums and try to snatch some wins. I think that is going to be the most important thing is to get some race wins because they make the biggest difference.

    3. Clauson returns to Milwaukee with Indy 500 experience: For the first time, the Firestone Indy Lights race at the Milwaukee Mile will have two drivers in the field that raced in the same Indianapolis 500 — Sebastian Saavedra and Bryan Clauson.

Clauson will drive the No. 24 Fan Force United entry in his first Firestone Indy Lights race since the Las Vegas 100 last October. The native of Noblesville, Ind., competed in the 2012 500 Mile Race by way of the Mazda Road to Indy scholarship he won for being the 2011 USAC National Drivers Champion.

“Any time you can be in an IndyCar, you learn a lot,” Clauson said of his experience. “Spending two or three weeks with a car – now that’s huge. With all of the laps I put in at Indy, I learned so much about aero and mechanical grip. It really sped up my learning curve. It’s a lot of pressure there, but I feel like a good Indy program really helps a young guy, because even though it’s tough you get to be more methodical.”

The partnership with USAC was announced in 2010 and allows the National Drivers Champion to jump on the Mazda Road to Indy and make their way into the IZOD IndyCar Series. Clauson has won the scholarship two years in a row. In 2011, he drove all oval races for Sam Schmidt Motorsports, with a best finish of third at Iowa. His second-best finish was at the Milwaukee Mile, where he finished fourth after qualifying third.

In addition to celebrating his return to the series, Clauson will also be celebrating his 23rd birthday on the day of the event.

“Milwaukee is a fun place. It’s an oval like no other,” Clauson said. “Both ends are really different, and it is a very tricky place. I’ve run several different types of cars here, and it really is a fun and challenging place to get the car working well. It’s definitely a give and take, as what works at one end may not work so well at the other, so you’re really just trying to find the fastest compromise and what will let you run as close as possible to the edge.”

    4. Virgin Group partners with TrueCar Racing: TrueCar Racing announced that Virgin Group, a leading international branded investment company started in 1970 by Sir Richard Branson, is joining as an affiliate sponsor of the Nos. 6 and 7 cars driven by Katherine Legge and Sebastien Bourdais.

Virgin’s logos also will be placed on each TrueCar-sponsored “Women Empowered” initiative racing team cars.

“We are thrilled to have the Virgin Group team with TrueCar Racing to help empower women in racing and to help strengthen and broaden the message that women racers can statistically win in a sport dominated by men with the right resources and support,” said Scott Painter, founder and CEO of TrueCar, Inc. “We are committed to providing our team with the tools they need to win now and in the future.”

INDYCAR’s 2012 race in China canceled

[media-credit name=”IZOD IndyCar Series” align=”alignright” width=”360″][/media-credit]INDYCAR, the sanctioning body for the IZOD IndyCar Series, announced today its scheduled Aug. 19 race in Qingdao, China, has been canceled.

“We wanted to give the China race every opportunity to move forward and be successful, but INDYCAR has been notified by the promoter that the event is cancelled for 2012,” said Randy Bernard, CEO, INDYCAR. “We were informed that the promoter was trying to move the event to a different date and location. After ongoing discussions regarding alternative dates, as well as doing our due diligence in exploring alternate venues in China, the promoter cancelled the event. A decision had to be made to allow INDYCAR and its participants to plan accordingly for the second half of the season.”

INDYCAR announced plans for its inaugural race in China on Nov. 10, 2011. Bernard said INDYCAR is “not closing the door” on opportunities for a future race in China.

Bernard added that INDYCAR is investigating a possible replacement event that will keep the IZOD IndyCar Series schedule at 16 races.

“We are working with our promoters that host events in the second half of our calendar to keep them apprised of how the date of a potential new race could impact our current schedule,” he said.

INDYCAR NEWS AND NOTES – June 12, 2012

[media-credit name=”IZOD IndyCar Series” align=”alignright” width=”360″][/media-credit]Today’s IZOD IndyCar Series, Firestone Indy Lights and Mazda Road to Indy headlines:

    1. Short oval package won’t short-change excitement

    3. Inside the Box Score – Firestone 550

    1. Short oval package won’t short-change excitement: Following a smashing success of the new car-engine package at Texas Motor Speedway, the IZOD IndyCar Series completes the mid-season trio of oval events at the Milwaukee Mile and Iowa Speedway.

Those consecutive Saturday races won’t lack for entertainment, but they’ll be devoid of the drama associated with how a rear wicker the thickness of Tuesday’s USA Today can influence a race car’s performance on a 1.5-mile, high-banked speedway.

The short oval aerodynamic package for the 1-mile, flat Milwaukee track and .875-mile, progressively banked Iowa Speedway is closely aligned with the road/street course platform. The lone mandatory element is the addition of front brake duct backing plates, while two-thirds radiator inlet shutters are options. Rear wheel infils and sidepod top decks (drag reductions) are verboten.

Eighteen drivers tested May 29 at Milwaukee and 21 at Iowa Speedway on June 12.

“The package worked well at Milwaukee and I expect the same at Iowa for two exciting races,” INDYCAR vice president of technology Will Phillips said.

The final element of the aero package devised for Texas Motor Speedway in an INDYCAR-driver collaboration proved to be what almost every competitor sought in the first race of the new car on an 1.5-mile oval.

“There was plenty of passing, an exciting finish and a safe race,” Phillips said of the 228-lap race under the lights won by Justin Wilson in the No. 18 Sonny’s BBQ car for Dale Coyne Racing. “Would we have tweaked the package slightly if we had to do it again? Not much. We made the drivers work hard, which is something they have been asking for.”

Most drivers who utilized the one-eighth-inch wicker were able to run almost flat until the Firestone Firehawks wore and the fuel load lightened to conspire to make the car became a handful. Still, it was the alternative to the pack racing that drivers were attempting to steer clear of.

“This is the best racing I’ve ever had on an oval,” said Power, the series championship leader by 36 points over Scott Dixon. “You had to lift, you had to look after your tires, you had to really drive the thing — it was moving around. That is just the sort of racing that we need at these sort of tracks.”

Racing at the Milwaukee IndyFest Presented by XYQ on June 16 (1 p.m. ET on ABC) and the Iowa Corn Indy 250 (10 p.m. ET June 23 on NBC Sports Network) will likely continue the momentum.

“We put on some great shows this year, and we need to keep that buzz going,” said Graham Rahal, who was overtaken by Wilson on Lap 226 after brushing the Turn 4 wall. “I saw guys going forward like crazy one stint, next stint they were falling back like crazy, and I was one of them. That’s phenomenal. That’s the way it should be. That’s the way it used to be.

“And, ultimately, the goal here is to put more butts in the seats out there and more eyes on the TV. If racing like this keeps helping it, then I’m all for it.”

    2. Inside the Box Score – Firestone 550: Numbers to note following the Firestone 550, the seventh of 16 events of the 2012 IZOD Indy Car Series season.

3 – Drivers to finish every race this season – Ed Carpenter, Dario Franchitti and Simon Pagenaud

6 – Different teams represented in the top 10 in the IZOD IndyCar Series standings.

12 – Different drivers to finish on the podium in the first seven races of 2012.

14 – Different drivers with at least one top-five finish in 2012.

18 – Positions gained by JR Hildebrand en route to his fifth-place finish at Texas, most of any driver in the field.

36 – Points separating Will Power (256) from Scott Dixon (220) in the IZOD IndyCar Series championship standings.

42 – Starts between wins for Justin Wilson. Wilson’s last win was with Dale Coyne Racing at Wtakins Glen in 2009.

188 – Consecutive Indy car starts for Tony Kanaan dating to the 2001 CART race in Portland.

329 – Laps led by Scott Dixon in 2012. Dixon has led six of the seven races in 2012, only failing to lead a lap at Long Beach.

837 – Laps completed by Simon Pagenaud in 2012. Pagenaud has completed all but one lap in 2012, finishing one lap down at Sao Paulo.

  • INDYCAR ANNOUNCES RULES FOR IOWA QUALIFYING HEAT RACES

INDYCAR ANNOUNCES RULES FOR IOWA QUALIFYING HEAT RACES

[media-credit name=”iowacorn.org” align=”alignright” width=”224″][/media-credit]INDIANAPOLIS (Tuesday, June 12, 2012) – Two IZOD IndyCar Series practice sessions June 22 totaling 90 minutes will play integral roles in setting the starting grid for the Iowa Corn Indy 250.

As announced by INDYCAR in mid-February, three heat races of 30 laps each will replace single-car qualifications for the June 23 race under the lights on the .875-mile Iowa Speedway oval.

According to Rule 8.5 of the IZOD IndyCar Series rulebook, groups for the 6:15 p.m. (local) qualifications will be determined by combined practice session times.

Race 1 will consist of the even-numbered positions, starting with the 10th-quickest practice time overall, and determine the even-numbered positions in the starting field from 10th down.

Race 2 will consist of the odd-numbered positions, starting with the ninth-quickest practice time overall, and determine the odd-numbered positions in the starting field from 9th down.

Race 3 will consist of drivers ranked one through eight by combined practice times. Results of Race 3 will determine the top-eight starting positions with the winner taking the pole position for the Iowa Corn Indy 250.

INDYCAR president of competition Beaux Barfield said the qualifying procedure was introduced for this event only as an experiment to add excitement. Single-car qualifications with the cumulative time of two laps will be held at the Milwaukee Mile on June 15 and Auto Club Speedway on Sept. 14.

The new Iowa oval qualifying procedure will complement the three rounds of qualifications held on road/street courses, culminating in the Firestone Fast Six.

“The build-up we presently have for the Firestone Fast Six has that excitement and we wanted to do something similar for the oval events,” Barfield said. “It’s going back to the heritage of short-track races.”

Double-file restarts also will be utilized at Iowa Speedway, which has played host to the IZOD IndyCar Series since its opening in 2007. Marco Andretti of Andretti Autosport won the 2011 race.

“We’ve had a lot of firsts at Iowa Speedway with INDYCAR and the mini-races are another first,” said Stan Clement, president of Iowa Speedway. “With the new car and the heat races, fans who attend the Iowa Corn Indy 250 weekend will get racing on both days.”

  • Level Playing Field as OSCAAR Mod’s Invade Barrie

Level Playing Field as OSCAAR Mod’s Invade Barrie

[media-credit name=”barriespeedway.com” align=”alignright” width=”301″][/media-credit]A full month away from the racetrack for the OSCAAR Modified tour has created a number of anxious race car drivers. So far, just the inaugural event is in the books after rained washed away the scheduled race at Kawartha Speedway on June 1st. The event marks the first ever modified race at Barrie Speedway since its reconfiguration and resurfacing in 2007. The Mods will battle for another 30-lap event as a number of drivers seek to become the second winner in OSCAAR Modified history.

Gary McLean will be defending his inaugural race win at Barrie after a very exciting battle with Barry Newman on opening night. The native of Conn, ON has announced his plans to run the full tour in the #8 Greg Gibson-owned machine. If he is to defend his opening race win, he will have to surmount a number of hungry competitors including a pair of family members.

Brent McLean (#7 Home Hardware Cobalt) has also announced his plans to race full-time on the tour. He currently sits fifth in the standings, but did finish on the podium in third at Sunset. Brent will look to challenge his uncle Gary on Saturday night.

Brent’s cousin Aaron McLean is expected to make his OSCAAR Modified debut in the #4 machine this Saturday. The defending Varney Motor Speedway modified champion is sure to be a tough battle when the green flag drops.

A number of modified rookies had impressive debuts on opening night including Tim Burke. The driver of the #99x finished sixth at Sunset in his late-model-turned-modified science project. With the entire

field starting with a blank page of notes at Barrie, look for Burke to try and gain the advantage early on.

Brandon Crumbie was strong in his modified debut as well, earning a top-five fifth place finish. The former Sunset Speedway Limited Late Model competitor has put a lot of time and effort in to his 2012 campaign that he hopes will result in more finishes at the front of the field. Look for another smooth and consistent performance for the #72.

Larry Mackenzie had a good start to his season with a seventh place finish in his first try behind the wheel of the unsponsored #96 mod. The ‘Mad Dog’ will look to crack the top-five on Saturday night with his aggressive driving style.

After moving up from Kawartha Speedway’s thunder car division, Josh Gruntz did not have the start he had hoped for in his first event. The driver of the #31 finished tenth but is always looking for more from his 2011 Autumn Colours Classic championship chassis. Gruntz tested at Barrie over the off season and may be one-step ahead of the competition before the drop of the green flag.

Dave Terry (#14 Castrol/Wasteco/Brennan Haulage/Keeler Electric Modified) finished a respectable ninth in his modified debut. Terry has spent some long days in the shop preparing his entry for Barrie in order to finish at the front. The Erin, ON native battled a loose car at Sunset and is hoping to use the knowledge he gained in the inaugural event towards a better finish.

Matt Barton (#2 MDB Racecars Modified) will make his second start of a limited 2012 schedule. Barton finished eleventh despite running mid-pack most of the race before getting tangled in a pair of spins. If Barton can stay clean, look for the #2 to be knocking for a top-five on Saturday evening.

Alongside the OSCAAR Modifieds Saturday night will be the OSCAAR Super Late Models in their first event at Barrie Speedway since 2007. The OSCAAR duo will accompany Barrie’s weekly Limited Late Model division for an impressive line-up of Saturday night racing at the Oro, ON oval. Pit gates open at 3pm with the grandstand opening at 5pm and the first green flag at 7pm.
