ARCA RACING SERIES – RACE 3 OF 19 – Salem Speedway

NINE TIMES FOR NINE TIME? Nine-time ARCA Racing Series driving champion Frank Kimmel is second on the all-time ARCA Series win list with 74 victories behind only Iggy Katona, who leads with 79. However, Kimmel has arguably dominated at Salem over his 36 appearances at his “home” racetrack. With nine wins, 11 top five finishes and five top ten finishes at Salem Speedway since 1992, one could say he understands the track dynamics. He looks for his first victory since 2008 on the circuit – ironically, that last win coming at Salem.

SALEM, A FAMILY TRADITION: Kimmel has thirty years of experience at Salem Speedway – more years than a heavy percentage of the ARCA Racing Series field making their starts this weekend. Son Frankie and nephew Will also have histories at the track – with Frankie leading “the Kimmel charge” last year during the ARCA Racing Series race, out qualifying his dad. Frankie will be watching from pit road this year, as his focus is his studies at UNCC until his graduation next spring.

TO TEST, OR NOT TO TEST: Many of the other ARCA Racing Series teams opted in for the open test session earlier this season at Salem Speedway – but Kimmel and his crew chief, Jeriod Prince, aren’t phased. The two opted to focus on the Talladega superspeedway car instead, trusting in the experience level of their driver over the years and in his feedback to his new team.

THE BIG 5-0: Kimmel is known on the race circuit for being a “jokester,” always with a youthful smile. The Salem race weekend brings another “big” milestone for the veteran driver, as he turns fifty years old on Monday. According to Frank, that’s reason and motivation to win – he wants a big cake for something other than his age!

FROM THE TEAM PERSPECTIVE: David Pepper, ThorSport Racing’s Director of Competition, knows that momentum is key to getting in a rhythm for the No. 44 boys. “Expectations are high with this being Frank’s home track, and I know our guys are feeling the pressure. It’s just good to be back racing consistently, because it’s easier to continue momentum when you race week in and week out. Over the next month or two, we hope to show the strength of the team we built in the offseason.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 44 team will utilize chassis No. A-1 this weekend at Salem Speedway. A new chassis for the team during the last race in Mobile, it joins a full fleet of new race cars at the ThorSport stable in Sandusky, Ohio.

THOUGHTS FROM THE DRIVER: Frank Kimmel
WITH SO MANY APPEARANCES AT THIS TRACK, IS IT SAFE TO SAY IT’S YOUR FAVORITE?

Yes, that’s correct. I love a lot of these racetracks, I’m an old school racer. Salem, though, is definitely special for many reasons. It’s my home track and my family has spent so much time there; I’ve had a lot of great wins and great finishes there; and I have so many memories. The thing about it, it’s rough and has holes and is gritty – you absolutely have to race the racetrack. It’s your biggest competitor, not the guys around you. So it almost becomes an individual sport, and it’s a major challenge. I really enjoy that, and it gives you a lot of satisfaction when you can win at a place like Salem.

YOU HAD A BIG WEEKEND A FEW WEEKS AGO AT “THE ROCK” IN STREET STOCKS. WHAT HAPPENED?

Well, my series, the Frank Kimmel National Street Stocks, went to Rockingham Speedway for the first time alongside NASCAR (as the Camping World Truck Series was also present). We had a full field of 36 cars, and my son Frankie was able to pull off the lead for the last 20 or so laps and take the win. Overall, it was a pretty amazing weekend!

ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO BIRTHDAY TIMES?

Being such a practical joker, I’m a little nervous to go to the racetrack – who knows what some of those guys are going to do to me! It’ll be a family weekend, and we’ll celebrate Monday between Donna and myself. To me, it’s just another year at the track, and I want to keep doing this and being competitive as long as I can. I think I can still show these young guys a thing or two!

High Level of Anticipation by Alex Bowman and Cunningham Motorsports for Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200

[media-credit name=”ARCA Racing Network” align=”alignright” width=”180″][/media-credit]April 23, 2012 – (Mooresville, NC) – As the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards 2012 season begins to get hectic, Alex Bowman and his Cunningham Motorsports team are ready to turn the heat up when the third race of the season takes place at Salem Speedway on Sunday, April 29.

The results from the most recent race, which included winning the pole and finishing 3rd, at the inaugural Mobile Speedway event, gave Bowman and the Cunningham team the push to work hard throughout the “off time” in preparation for Salem Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway.

Bowman and the team tested at the .55 mile speedway near Salem, Indiana last week, with exciting results. After Bowman turned his first laps on the track, he commented, “I’d say that (turns) three and four are the most unique corners of any track I’ve ever been on. Unforgiving would be another way I’d describe it. Really fast too. We should have a really good shot when we come back.” After crew chief, Paul Andrews and the team made many adjustments to the #22 Dodge, the 18 year old Bowman seemed more confident when he said, “We made quite a few changes to the car throughout the day, just to try things. But we were very comfortable and happy with the car, and our speed. We made lots of progress.”

After taking a bit of time to digest all that he and the team learned during the test, Bowman added, “With Cunningham Motorsports’ history at Salem and the results we got at the test, we have great potential to be standing in victory lane Sunday.”

The first 45 minute practice session begins Saturday at 12:00 pm EST, with final practice from 1:15-2:00 EST. Menard’s Pole qualifying presented by Ansell will follow at 3:30 EST. Sunday’s activities will begin with an on-track autograph session beginning at 11:30 am EST. The green flag will fly for the 200 lap event at 2:15. Brunnhoelzl Captures Caraway Win

[media-credit name=”NASCAR” align=”alignright” width=”221″][/media-credit]SOPHIA, N.C. – George Brunnhoelzl III withstood three attempts at a green-white-checkered finish and hung on to win the Parking Lot Maintenance Headquarters 150 in NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour action on Saturday at Caraway Speedway.

Brunnhoelzl, the two-time Tour champion out of West Babylon, N.Y., dominated the day. He posted the fastest time in practice and set a new track record in qualifying before going out and leading a race-high 140 laps en route to his second victory of the season. It was his seventh career win at Caraway, but more importantly it was his 13th career Tour win which places him in a tie atop the all-time list with L.W. Miller.

In that final restart, Brunnhoelzl held off Miller and a hard-charging Jason Myers at the line. Rookies Kyle Ebersole and Michael Speeney crossed the line in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Daniel Hemric, Thomas Stinson, Bryan Dauzat, Frank Fleming and Burt Myers rounded out the top-10 finishers on the evening.

Burt Myers was running third heading into the last restart, but was penalized for aggressive driving and was scored as the last car on the lead lap.

The race was slowed due to caution 11 times for 45 laps and the race lead changed hands just two times between two drivers.

In the point standings, Brunnhoelzl opened up a six-point lead on Miller with rookie Danny Bohn sitting in third, 26 points in back of the leader.

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour heads into its annual spring hiatus and is back in action next on July 6 for the Firecracker 150 at Caraway Speedway.

  • Alzheimer’s Association in Honor of Dan Wheldon and First Descents Selected for Jimmie Johnson Foundation Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope

Alzheimer’s Association in Honor of Dan Wheldon and First Descents Selected for Jimmie Johnson Foundation Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (April 20, 2012) – Alzheimer’s Association and First Descents are the next two charities selected for the 2012 Jimmie Johnson Foundation Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope, which Johnson will wear in the June 24 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.

Each organization will receive a grant of $10,000 and a special Blue Bunny ice cream party.

ESPN reporter Nicole Briscoe nominated the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of the late Dan Wheldon. Wheldon was an IZOD IndyCar Series driver and a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, but he died in an on-track accident last October during the season-ending race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“Dan Wheldon was working to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s before he was killed. His mother has Alzheimer’s,” wrote Briscoe in her nomination. “Dan’s legacy is as much about his immense talent and accomplishments behind the wheel as it is his family. Featuring this organization would be a tribute to Dan, his family and all who are affected by the disease.”

Fan Melissa Hage from Salem, Ore., nominated First Descents. The organization offers young adult cancer fighters and survivors (ages 18-39) a free outdoor adventure experience, designed to empower them to climb, paddle and surf beyond their diagnosis, defy cancer and reclaim their lives.

“As a young adult cancer survivor, I didn’t have anyone my age to talk with about what I had gone through until I participated in First Descents,” wrote Hage. “My recovery would not have been complete without them. They gave me back the spark for living and allowed me to prove that cancer didn’t win. Every cancer survivor should be able to attend camp and have that same feeling.”

The Helmet of Hope program, which began in 2008, allows fans, consumers and media members across the country to nominate their favorite charity to receive a $10,000 grant, special recognition on Johnson’s race helmet and a Blue Bunny ice cream party. To date, the program has contributed more than $300,000 to 49 different charities across the United States.

This year’s Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope campaign runs for six consecutive Sprint Cup race weekends, and it began April 1 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. Johnson will draw one winner from a list of media submissions and one from a list of fan submissions each race weekend through the Mother’s Day weekend Sprint Cup event at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.

Alzheimer’s Association, whose national headquarters are located in Chicago, Ill., and First Descents, whose national headquarters are located in Denver, Colo., join the United Way of Siouxland, Nature Conservancy, Chill Foundation, Fisher House and Scott Lake Elementary-PTO as charities that will be featured on the Blue Bunny Helmet of Hope.

Fans and media members may nominate their charity by visiting www.helmetofhope.org. For more information about the most recently selected charities visit www.alz.org or @alzassociation, www.firstdescents.org or @FirstDescents.

This year’s title sponsor for Helmet of Hope is Blue Bunny Ice Cream. • Three Winners, Series Champions In 96th Indianapolis 500 Field

Three Winners, Series Champions In 96th Indianapolis 500 Field

[media-credit name=”indianapolismotorspeedway.com” align=”alignright” width=”198″][/media-credit]INDIANAPOLIS, Thursday, April 19, 2012 – Three past winners and three IZOD IndyCar Series champions are among the drivers named to the 34 entries filed for the 2012 Indianapolis 500, scheduled for Sunday, May 27 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

All drivers will compete in the new Dallara chassis that debuted at the start of this IZOD IndyCar Series season. The Indianapolis 500 will be the first oval race for the new car.

Engine competition returns to “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” for the first time since 2005. Chevrolet and Honda each will power 14 entries, with Lotus powering six. The popular, distinctive sound of turbocharged engines also returns to the “500″ for the first time since 1996.

Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves (2001, 2002, 2009) leads the list of past winners, which also includes Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Dario Franchitti (2007, 2010) and Scott Dixon (2008). Castroneves is trying to become just the fourth four-time winner in the illustrious history of the race, joining A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears. Franchitti will attempt to become just the 10th driver to earn at least three Indianapolis 500 victories.

IZOD IndyCar Series champions assigned to cars include Dixon (2003, 2008), Franchitti (2007, 2009, 2010, 2011) and KV Racing Technology w/SH’s Tony Kanaan (2004). Four-time Champ Car champion Sebastian Bourdais also aims to make his first Indianapolis 500 start since 2005.

Thirty drivers have been named to the 34 entries filed this year, which will breed competition for the 33 starting spots during Pole Day qualifying Saturday, May 19 and Bump Day qualifying Sunday, May 20.

The 2012 Indianapolis 500 is scheduled to start at noon (ET) Sunday, May 27 and will be broadcast live by ESPN on ABC, the IMS Radio Network and SiriusXM 94. Opening Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 12, which also will feature the Celebration of Automobiles.

There is outstanding depth and quality in this year’s field. Besides three past race winners and three IZOD IndyCar Series champions, 15 of the 30 drivers named to entries have won at least one race in either IZOD IndyCar Series or Champ Car World Series/CART competition.

A strong crop of seven rookies includes the most experienced Formula One driver in history, Rubens Barrichello, and two past Firestone Indy Lights champions, Wade Cunningham and Josef Newgarden. Other rookies assigned to cars are reigning two-time USAC National Drivers Champion Bryan Clauson, James Jakes, Katherine Legge and 2010 American Le Mans Series champion Simon Pagenaud.

Plenty of young talent that recently advanced through the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system also was assigned to cars, including three Firestone Indy Lights champions – Cunningham (2005), 2011 Indianapolis 500 runner-up JR Hildebrand (2009) and Newgarden (2011). Other recent Firestone Indy Lights graduates on the entry list include Marco Andretti, Ana Beatriz, Ed Carpenter, Clauson, James Hinchcliffe, Charlie Kimball, Graham Rahal and Sebastian Saavedra.

Three women were among the drivers named to entries: 2010 Chase Rookie of the Year Simona De Silvestro, Beatriz and Legge.

Andretti Autosport is involved in five entries, more than any other team. Andretti Autosport is fielding cars for Andretti, Beatriz, Hinchcliffe and Ryan Hunter-Reay, while Andretti Autosport/AFS Racing has entered a car for Saavedra.

Bryan Clauson to Drive For Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing in Indy 500

[media-credit name=”SFHR” align=”alignright” width=”212″][/media-credit]USAC Open Wheel Star Will Be in Familiar No. 39

INDIANAPOLIS (April 19, 2012) – Short track, open wheel racing fans will see a familiar name and a familiar car number when practice begins May 12 for the 96th Running of the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race.USAC open wheel star Bryan Clauson has been hired by Sarah Fisher and Wink Hartman to drive the No. 39 Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing/RW Dallara/Honda/Firestone car in this year’s ‘Greatest Spectacle in Racing.’ Clauson, from Noblesville, Ind., is a multi-time USAC national champion and has won several races behind the wheel of his family-owned No. 39 USAC midget.

Clauson will be a teammate to another young American driver, Josef Newgarden, from Nashville, Tenn. Newgarden drives the No. 67 Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone car fulltime in the IZOD IndyCar Series. Clauson and Newgarden were teammates in the Firestone Indy Lights Series in 2011.

“It’s an awesome opportunity for me to enter the Indianapolis 500 with Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing,” said Clauson. “It’s almost surreal just talking about it. For me to be attempting to make the race with Sarah’s team is just phenomenal. With her background in sprint car and midget racing and her continued involvement at that level, this is just a good fit for me. I’m also proud to be an Indiana boy driving for an Indiana team.”

“I’m also excited about the continuity we’re building into the program,” added Clauson. “My car number will be No. 39 and I’m bringing along some of my short track supporters with me like Rotondo Weirich.”

Clauson won back-to-back USAC National Drivers Championships in 2010 and 2011 for his performance in all three major USAC open wheel divisions. He also won the USAC National Midget Championship in 2010 and 2011and has more than 26 USAC wins.

In addition, Clauson had four top-five finishes in Firestone Indy Lights racing in 2011. His best finish was third at Iowa Speedway driving for Sam Schmidt Motorsports.

“It’s quite an honor to bring a USAC champion to the Indianapolis 500,” said Fisher. “I am very fond of my roots in short track oval racing, and watching Bryan at some of these events really brings back memories. Personally knowing his background, I have complete confidence in his credentials, talent and capabilities, and look forward to working with him at Indy. It will be exciting to fill out our team roster with both of the Road to Indy Champions from last season, really solidifying the ladder program.”

The pairing of Clauson and Newgarden is a strong statement for the Road to Indy program. In addition to Clauson’s USAC National Drivers Championships, Newgarden won the 2011 Firestone Indy Lights Championship.

“INDYCAR continues to focus on strengthening ties with USAC as a path to the IZOD IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500,” said Randy Bernard, CEO, INDYCAR. “After a strong oval debut in Firestone Indy Lights last season, it made sense to utilize our USAC National Drivers Championship scholarship to enter Bryan in the Indianapolis 500. Not only is Bryan one of the most talented USAC drivers, his participation in the Indy 500 will attract the interest of short track fans across the country.”

It’s more than a coincidence that SFHR has hired two American drivers for its Indiana-based operation. The team is proud of its Indiana roots and routinely flies an American flag in its pit box.

“SFHR is happy to welcome Bryan to the team,” said Wink Hartman, co-owner of SFHR. “We’ve been working toward this program for quite some time, and I feel we are prepared to present a first-class effort for the entry. Working with young American talent fits this team and its values perfectly, and we are working hard to find a primary sponsor for Bryan to match that platform. We are also thankful to have the support of all our partners, including Honda, for this program and the excitement the total package brings.”

Not lost on Clauson is the fact he is joining an emerging IZOD IndyCar Series team that already has a victory in its portfolio.

“With its performance so far this year with Josef on the road courses, combined with the fact it ran strong at Indy and won the last oval race in 2011, SFHR is proving it is a first-class team. I can’t wait for ROP.”

Clauson and Newgarden both passed their INDYCAR oval test at Texas Motor Speedway on April 5. They will both participate in the Indianapolis 500 Rookie Orientation Program on May 10.

Practice for the Indianapolis 500 begins Saturday, May 12. “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” takes the green flag at Noon ET on Sunday, May 27.

    Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing

Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing (SFHR) was established in 2008 and is owned by former driver Sarah Fisher, the youngest woman ever to compete in the Indianapolis 500 and the first woman to run a full IZOD IndyCar Series schedule, and businessman Wink Hartman. SFHR has competed in the IZOD IndyCar Series since 2008, earning its first victory in 2011 at Kentucky Speedway.
