Other series racing press release

  • RICARDO GONZALEZ SCORES SECOND CONSECUTIVE PODIUM AT SEBRING

Mexico City, Mexico – March 22, 2011 – Ricardo Gonzalez and teammates Gunnar Jeannette and Rudy Junco from Core Autosport scored a podium finished at the Mobil1 12 Hours of Sebring this weekend after an impressive race in which they fell to last place due to mechanical failures and then managed to climb back to the third position in the LMPC class of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron. Gonzalez scored his second consecutive podium at the historic endurance event after finishing third on his series debut in 2010.

Jeannette took the green flag in the third position and only a few laps into his stint started noticing a problem with the power steering system on his Oreca FML09. Despite the problems the talented american driver held on to the third spot and handed the car over to Gonzalez 1hr40min into the race. Gonzalez stayed out front among the leaders but the steering problem kept worsening until it became impossible to continue driving the car and the team decided to bring the car to the garage for repairs. The problem resulted from a leak in the power steering system that not only affected the steering, but also splashed fluid onto the rear tires severely affecting the car’s handling.

After a quick repair by the Core crew Gonzalez went back out on track at the 3hr5min mark in last place in the LMPC category and 12 laps behind the leaders. For the rest of his stint the mexican driver maintained a very quick pace and managed to recover two laps, handing the car to Junco in the sixth position.

Gonzalez began his second stint 7hr40min into the race when the #006 prototype was already in fourth position and for the next two hours had to drive first with daylight, then through the blinding sunset conditions, and finally at night under the lights. When he handed the car for the last time to Junco he was already in third position and only seven laps from the leaders. Jeannette finished the last 90 minutes of the race but was not able to gain further positions since the top two cars were several laps ahead. The three drivers placed third after completing 305 laps and 1132.2 miles around the 3.7-mile circuit.

The next round for the American Le Mans Series will be the glamorous Long Beach Grand Prix which will take place April 16 around the streets of Long Beach, California.

“Finishing third is a pretty good start to our season and to our hunt for the 2011 championships, we’ll take the points. Of course we wanted to win and without a doubt we had the speed, but unfortunately we had problems with our power steering at the beginning of the race and lost almost 12 laps in the garage fixing it. After that we knew that we just had to follow a steady rhythm and slowly catch the leaders back up without making any mistakes and waiting for the other cars to have problems. It was quite an effort from our part to go from last place and 12 laps down to third and only seven laps behind, but it wasn’t enough to get the top spot. The three of us did a good job out on the track and the Core team was also pretty impressive with their quick repairs. It’s obviously a shame that we had the mechanical problems because we had the car to win, but that’s endurance racing.”

  • Johnny Van Doorn Aiming For Three-Peat; Prepares For Climb Up

COOPERSVILLE, Michigan (March 22, 2011) – – Johnny Van Doorn otherwise known as “JVD” is patiently leaving his legacy in short track racing. That legacy has the chance to build momentum as the Coopersville, Michigan native announced that he will return to the Champion Racing Association (CRA) aiming for a third consecutive title in 2011.

Van Doorn though hopes to use accomplishments on the short track to climb the ladder and move up the racing ranks with an aim at the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards as a stepping stone to his hopeful eventual placement in NASCAR.

JVD driving the No. 61 Chevrolet Impala for Kaos Motorsports is one of the pre-race favorites when the CRA opens the curtain on their season-opener at Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Indiana on April 16.   “I’m really excited about returning to the CRA Series in 2011,” said Van Doorn, the 2007 CRA Series Rookie of the Year. “It meant a lot not only to myself but my team to win the championship again in 2010 and we feel that we have all the components to defend that title beginning at Anderson.”

He continued, “my dream is to someday reach the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. I’m not expecting that climb to be easy but I’m prepared to work for it, much like I have done for everything in racing. I know I cannot do it though without the support of my family, friends and sponsors.”   “CRA is my main objective in 2011 but I would like to methodically enter the ARCA Racing Series at some point and begin the transition to the bigger heavier cars. Both the CRA Series and ARCA are development ladders that can help make dreams come true.”

Despite carrying a quiet; under the radar profile at the track, Van Doorn remains focused on giving his Kaos Motorsports all he can behind the wheel.

“I could go on forever about my team,” he boasted. “My guys are great. They work hard, play hard and have fun. This is what racing is about. Most importantly though, they are in this because they all believe in me. That’s something that words cannot describe. So, I just try to make it up to them on the track.”

To support his quest in 2011, JVD and Co. are appreciative to have the support of Baker Engineering, Earth Service and Supply, Jegs.com, Magic Transportation, Paragon Corvette Reproductions, Port City Racecars and R and R Wire Loom as sponsors on their Chevrolet bowtie.

“It really means a lot to have the sponsor support that we have,” Van Doorn explained. “We could always use more support but while we continue that project, we’re just thankful and blessed to have what we do. Hopefully, we can kick off the season with a “w” next month.”

In 64 races, Van Doorn has posted six poles, eight wins, 25 top-fives and 47 top-10 finishes including back-to-back CRA championships in 2009 and 2010.

  • A.J. Frank Stalled In New Smyrna

NEW SMYRNA, Florida (March 22, 2011) – – USARacing Pro Cup Series veteran A.J. Frank had high hopes for New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway in the 2011 season-opener. Unfortunately, an engine failure in the final practice prevented Frank and his Odle Motorsports team from competing in the USARacing Pro Cup 250 presented by Kangaroo Express.

Leading up to the final practice, Frank showed that he had a car to contend with and likely could have been the man to beat in his first tango at New Smyrna. The team now only wonders what if.

“It’s a real blow to our team,” said Frank, who had hopes of making his 79th career USARacing start. “We had a good car. We didn’t even put new tires on it and it was still fast. Unfortunately, she just grenaded in final practice without any serious warning.   I want to thank Chip Lofton and the entire Matt Lofton Motorsports team for attempting to allow our team to borrow a motor. We tried everything we could; we just couldn’t get it to fit into the car. I also want to thank Speedco and Lucas Oil for their continued faith in me and my career. We’ll bounce back and not let this obstacle stand in our way.”

Currently, Frank and his group are exploring their options for a new motor in their No. 56 Speedco / Lucas Oil Chevrolet Impala. “We’re working a lot of different angles. Hopefully we’ll be able to have a solution here soon and we’ll make sure we let everyone know what’s transpired.”

The next USARacing Pro Cup Series event is scheduled for Friday, April 1st at Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, North Carolina.

  • MIKE SWEENEY AND A.M. PERFORMANCE ARE TEAMING UP TO RAISE FUNDING FOR THE LEUKEMIA AND LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

MIKE SWEENEY AND A.M. PERFORMANCE ARE TEAMING UP TO RAISE FUNDING FOR THE LEUKEMIA AND LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

Scotts Valley, California – March 21st, 2011- In an effort to make a positive impact in the community at large, has brought his relationship with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) with him to A.M. Performance for this year’s GRAND AM Continental Tire Challenge Sports Car Challenge season. Sweeney became involved with LLS in 2010 and will be helping them to raise awareness and funding for research throughout the year. He was recently honored when the Society chose him to be a candidate for their Man of the Year campaign. To donate please click here:

[media-credit name=”Mike Sweeney” align=”alignleft” width=”157″][/media-credit]Over the next ten weeks Sweeney will be trying to raise as much funding as possible as he competes to win the prestigious award. This is typically among the most effective fundraising campaigns that LLS does every year, with candidates nationwide raising over $11 million last year. 100% of every donation goes directly to research to both find a cure for blood-borne cancers long-term, and to provide patient support and help find less debilitating treatments in the short-term.

“I am both thrilled and honored to have been nominated for this program. Frankly, it’s not the title, but the chance to contribute to these researchers, doctors, and patients, while representing a fantastic organization that really gets me fired up,” said Sweeney. “We have a chance here to make a real difference, and to use our racing to bring attention to such a worthy cause makes me realize how lucky I am. I have to offer a huge thank you to LLS for inviting me to be a part of this program, and to A.M. Performance for giving us the platform we need to promote it. Now let’s show them what GRAND-AM fans can do and raise some money!”

In recent years, there have been significant breakthroughs in our understanding of how to treat blood-borne cancers, and with revolutionary new treatments just around the corner, it is obvious that a hope for a cure for blood cancers has never been greater. However, there are extremely limited federal funds available for these researchers, meaning they rely on contributions from private and corporate donors. Unfortunately, the importance of a campaign of this nature is never realized until a family member or friend is afflicted with this terrible disease. Your donation will save lives!

It doesn’t matter how much you can afford to give, every little bit helps! So whether you pledge $5 or $5000, we thank you for entering the fight against blood cancers. The easiest way to give is to simply go to this link: and click on the link to donate now! You contribution is tax-deductible and much appreciated.

Mike Sweeney and the A.M. Performance team will make their GRAND-AM debut April 7-9 during the Barber 200 at Barber Motosports Park. For more information please visit www.amperformanceracing.com and www.facebook.com/amperformance.

About the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS):

The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. When LLS was founded in 1949, a blood cancer diagnosis was almost always fatal. Thanks in part to innovative research funded by LLS, survival rates have doubled, tripled and even quadrupled for blood cancer patients. Still, there is much work to do. For instance these diseases are still the leading killer of children under 20. LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services.

  • Pennzoil to be Under the Hood of Top IZOD IndyCar Series Teams

Pennzoil UltraTM Euro 5W-40 Approved for use in Honda Engines

Houston, Texas (March 22, 2011) – After a 20-year absence from IndyCar racing, Pennzoil is returning to the sport in a big way. In addition to being back on the track through the brand’s multi-year alliance with Penske Racing and Penske Corporation, the brand’s premium Pennzoil Ultra™ Euro 5W-40 motor oil has been approved for use in all Honda Indy V8 engines that will compete in the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series. And the Pennzoil Ultra Euro formulation that will be used by IndyCar’s top teams is the motor oil available to consumers today.

“Pennzoil is no stranger to Indy racing, so we are happy to add Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40 to the short list of motor oils approved to keep our engines in pristine condition and working at optimum efficiency,” said Roger Griffiths, Technical Director of Honda Performance Development. “The engines we build are designed to deliver extremely high power outputs and reach very high engine speeds in each race, and our dyno testing has demonstrated that Pennzoil Ultra provides the top-tier lubrication performance that our engines require.”

In 2011, Pennzoil embarks on a multi-year alliance with Penske that expands Pennzoil’s motorsports presence to include the IZOD IndyCar Series. Pennzoil will be a primary sponsor of the No. 3 Shell V-Power-Pennzoil Ultra Dallara/Honda, driven by three-time Indianapolis 500 champion Helio Castroneves. Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5W-40 will be running in not only Helio’s IndyCar, but the cars of each of his Penske Racing teammates, Ryan Briscoe and Will Power, as well.

Pennzoil has a long history of involvement in motorsports, beginning with Russ Snowberger in 1930. Pennzoil’s history in Indy car racing has been highlighted victories by esteemed drivers Johnny Rutherford (1980), Rick Mears (1984, 1988), Danny Sullivan (1985) and Al Unser (1987).

“The opportunity to be in the engines of some of the top teams in Indy racing provides us with an environment to test our lubricants in extreme conditions,” said Pennzoil Global Brand Manager Debbie Van Schalkwyk. “Pennzoil scientists gain insights from the track that can be translated directly into the formulation of our consumer motor oils.”

Pennzoil Ultra became a reality through the incredibly high standard set by the Pennzoil brand and delivered by Shell Lubricants technology teams around the world. Years of collaboration resulted in a Pennzoil Ultra formulation that helps to keep engines as close to factory clean as possible, and far exceeds the most stringent car manufacturer standards for cleanliness and protection[1] – going beyond just lubricating and protecting an engine.

The Hyper Cleansing TechnologyTM built into Pennzoil UltraTM plays a critical role in the engine. The oil lubricates moving engine parts to reduce friction and power loss, and helps keep the engine clean by seeking out and dissolving contaminants safely into the oil before they form deposits in the engine.

Pennzoil UltraTM is available in SAE 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30 and 10W-60 viscosities. Pennzoil UltraTM 5W-20, 5W-30 and 10W-30 viscosities can be found in major automotive retailers nationwide. • Ryan Wilson Gaining Momentum At Caraway Speedway

ASHEBORO, North Carolina (March 21, 2011) – – Ryan Wilson driver of the No. 12 Randolph Bank Toyota Camry delivered two top-10 finishes at Caraway (N.C.) Speedway Saturday night but for the Randleman, North Carolina native the finishes weren’t good enough.

Wilson rebounded nicely after a mechanical malfunction resulted in a 14th place finish the week before at Caraway (N.C.) Speedway but after grabbing the pole and drawing second in the first 50-lap event on Saturday night, Wilson battled handling during the quick shootout and slid in the eighth position.

Starting ninth in the second feature, a series of adjustments by the Ryan Wilson Motorsports (RWM) team paid off with the No. 12 Randolph Bank Toyota Camry skillfully maneuvering through the field to post a third place finish.

“The finishes were a solid rebound from the week before but I’m not satisfied,” said the determined Wilson. “We just couldn’t dial in our No. 12 Randolph Bank Toyota Camry. We were much better the second race than we were the first race but still we weren’t quick enough to get in victory lane. We’ll keep digging and come back next week and try again.”

The winner of last Fall’s Richard Petty Driver Search II was outspoken about his initiative at Caraway (N.C.) Speedway. “We’re here to win and eventually take home the championship,” Wilson sounded. “We have a great team and are blessed to have such incredible support from the folks at Randolph Bank. I don’t take losing easy, but I guess that’s the intense racer in me. We’ll regroup this week and try again next Saturday night.”

Round three for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Caraway resumes on Saturday, March 26 with a 100-lap event beginning shortly after 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

  • Bryan Silas Rockets To Top-Five At New Smyrna In USAR Competition

NEW SYMRNA BEACH, Florida (March 21, 2011) – – Stuart, Florida native Bryan Silas wowed the crowd in the USARacing Pro Cup Series season-opener at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway last Saturday night after he drove his Bryan Silas Racing (BSR) machine to a stout fifth place finish in the USARacing Pro Cup 250 presented by Kangaroo Express.

The finish was a career-best effort for the 23-year old in 21 career USAR starts. Before Saturday night’s contest, Silas’s best finish came in his USARacing Pro Cup Series debut in 2009 at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway where he placed his No. 11 Rockingham Speedway / Palm Beach Grading Ford Fusion eighth after starting 23rd.

“We kind of flew under the radar this past weekend,” said Silas. “We didn’t make a big deal about coming out here because we wanted to show up and just race. Dave (McClure, crew chief) did a fabulous job all day long. The car was really solid and I had a great time.”

It was not even during the intense 250-lap event that losing a lap on pit road during a caution would stall Silas’s drive. His determination to cautiously thread the needle and tackle an extremely tight handling Ford Fusion would pay dividends. Obtaining the lucky dog during a late race caution allowed the prime opportunity for Silas to strut his stuff. He would surge his blue oval from the back of the pack and masterfully deliver his first USAR top-five.

“The adrenaline can get you going,” Silas said. “We had a mishap in the pits. It’s just one of those racing things. I knew that even though our car was tight we still had something we could race with. Thankfully, everything played out and we were able to show what our BSR team is really capable of.”

New Smyrna also marked the return of Bryan Silas Racing (BSR) led by his ARCA crew chief Dave McClure. “It was a total team effort,” he said. “Dave and the rest of the team wanted to run good right out of the box to show that our foundation is solid. The finish wasn’t easy, but results don’t come without hard work.”

Undoubtedly, the finish also rejuvenates the driver’s confidence just about in time for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards to resume their schedule with an approaching event at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway on April 15.

“Anytime you run good, it makes you feel good,” Silas admitted. “The USARacing Pro Cup Series is full of some of short track racing’s finest. We’ll take this momentum from New Smyrna; see what’s next on our plate in USAR while we focus ahead on Talladega in ARCA.”

NEW WEBSITE FOCUSES ON FORD RACING’S 110TH ANNIVERSARY; FANS CAN ENTER NEW SWEEPSTAKES FOR DREAM WEEKEND OF THEIR CHOICE

DEARBORN, MI – When Henry Ford crossed the finish line to beat Alexander Winton on Oct. 10, 1901 in a car he called ‘Sweepstakes’, he created the first milestone victory for Ford Racing.

In recognition of the 110th anniversary season of that historic win, Ford Racing has produced a sweepstakes of another sort for fans who want to interact and learn more about the memorable moments in the manufacturer’s racing history.

“There have been so many ground-breaking moments in Ford Racing history, we wanted to highlight those throughout this special year,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “Whether it was winning the 24 Hours of LeMans four straight years, Jimmy Clark teaming up with the Wood Brothers to win the Indianapolis 500, or John Force coming back to win his record 15th NHRA Funny Car championship, our racing history in all forms of worldwide motorsports is second to none, and we’re excited to have a website where fans can relive some of these classic events.”

The newly-created website, www.fordracing110.com, is live today and will provide regular news content, videos, polls, fantasy games, and forums for fans to discuss and comment on various topics. The initial news content focuses on NASCAR’s Wood Brothers, who are still basking in the glow of last month’s Daytona 500 victory with 20-year-old Trevor Bayne.

New content, video and photography will be continued to be added all year long, giving fans a chance to revisit some of the greatest moments of Ford’s past 110 years in racing.

Another part of the site is 110th Anniversary Sweepstakes, where fans can register for a chance to win the grand prize of a Ford Racing dream weekend in 2012. Five grand prize winners will get to choose a VIP weekend experience for two at one of the following 2012 events: NASCAR’s Daytona 500, NHRA’s Winternationals in Pomona, Homestead-Miami Speedway’s Grand-Am event in March, or Rally America’s X Games in July. Monthly winners will receive a limited-edition 110th Anniversary coin.

In addition, fans will be able to participate in a weekly helmet-to-helmet fantasy game in which two series’ drivers will be paired against each other. Fans will have the option to choose between the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, NHRA Funny Car, and World Rally Championship. The player with the most correct matches at the end of the year will win an autographed Ford Racing helmet.

“We feel our fans are the most passionate in all of motorsports,” said Allison. “This is the kind of site where we can engage them and talk to them about the greatest moments in Ford Racing history.”
