    Kurt Busch announces NHRA debut

After spending much of his off-season testing NHRA drag racing cars, Kurt Busch will make his first NHRA Full Throttle Series start at the 42ndt annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornational on March 11-13 at the Gainsville Raceway in Florida.

[media-credit name=”Courtesy NHRA Media” align=”alignleft” width=”250″][/media-credit]The stock-car champion will compete for one of 16 spots in the Pro-Stock class in his Shell Dodge Avenger for Allen Johnson and J&J Racing.

“Pro Stock is the tightest pro category as far as the elapsed time is concerned and it’s not going to be an easy task,’ Busch said. “I feel me teaming up with Allen Johnson and the Mopar folks, we’ve given ourselves the best opportunity to make the show.”

During one of his off-season tests, Busch earned his NHRA Pro Stock license with a speed of 210.43 mph at Bradenton, Fla. Last year’s top qualifier at the Gatornationals in the Pro Stock class was Mike Edwards with a time of 6.537-seconds and a top speed of 211.53 mph. Rickie Jones was the 16th driver with a time of 6.601-seconds at 209.10 mph. Under those circumstances and conditions, Busch would have qualified 11th with his off-season test time.

Busch competed in the NHRA Lucas Oil Series during the 2010 Tire Kingdom Gatornationals in a rebuilt 1970 Dodge Charger for Johnson. His time was limited due to weather and he finished with a first round loss.

“The 2010 event was an experience of a lifetime, the camaraderie with the sportsman guys was a truly fun experience,” Busch said. “Although it was tough to watch it rain for four days, the grassroots effort of the sportsman guys is what makes the true heart of NHRA racing.”

Tickets for the 42nd annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals are available by visiting www.NHRAtix.com or calling 800-884-NHRA (6472).

  • Bobby Santos III Straps Back into the Mystic Missile

2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Champ Defends Title in 2011

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (January 24, 2011)– 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT) Champion Bobby Santos will return to the driver’s seat of the No. 4 Mystic Missile Dodge for the 2011 NWMT season. The Heinke-Baldwin Racing development driver will join the Mystic Missile team to defend the championship title.

Santos joined the Mystic Missile team in 2010 for his first full season in the NWMT. The team was hot right off the bat, with three wins, two poles and two track records in the first four races of the season. Santos and team tallied a season-high four wins and four poles by the finale at Thompson International Speedway. Santos, the youngest NWMT champion, beat NWMT veterans Mike Stefanik and Ted Christopher to take his first touring championship trophy in his first full NWMT season.

“It’s pretty exciting just to be on a second year with everybody at Mystic Missile,” explained Santos. “I think that we will be that much better working together. I think I will be better hitting the tracks for a second time. As a team, we can only be better, so it’s really exciting.”

While most called the 2010 championship run a surprise, the Mystic Missile team knew that focus and race wins would be key to winning the championship. Ignoring critics, the No. 4 Mystic Missile held the top spot of the standings following all but one race of the season. After a banner year, owner Bob Garbarino believes the Mystic Missile team will improve this season. “We are planning to be tougher this year than we were last year, and I think we will be,” said Garbarino.

Santos will kick off the season with the Mystic Missile team on April 10 at Thompson International Speedway. The Franklin, Mass., native will return to the track where he was crowned champion, looking to repeat his 2010 Icebreaker win.

    About Bobby Santos III

Bobby Santos III is a third generation driver, who has been racing since he was four years old. After running part-time in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour since 2004, this season Santos ran his first full schedule and took home the 2010 Championship with four wins, four poles, 9 top-five and 11 top-10 finishes in the 14-race schedule.

The 25-year-old from Franklin, Mass. has driven 23 different styles of race cars, including USAC, ARCA, NASCAR Nationwide and Trucks, and the Modified car he currently races. Santos, a driver in the Heinke-Baldwin Racing driver development program, had one win, at Thompson International Speedway, in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour prior to this season.

  • Travis Pastrana Practice’s at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale in Preparation for the All-Star Showdown

Travis Pastrana Practice’s at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale in Preparation for the All-Star Showdown

When the announcement was made that 11-time X Games gold medalist and four-time Rally Car national champion Travis Pastrana would be coming to NASCAR in 2011, the news came as a breath of fresh air during a time when attendance was down and the biggest decline was found between the ages of 18-34. NASCAR had already lured Metal Mulisha star Brian Deegan, who competed in the NASCAR Whelan series driving a Bob Newberry NTS Motorsports prepared super late model.

[media-credit name=”Sal Sigala Jr.” align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit]Deegan competed in three races on Toyota Speedway at Irwindale’s half mile in 2010 with a best finish of 10th. Team owner Bob Newberry said that, “NASCAR will be energized by both new fans and new sponsors that Deegan and Metal Mulisha (Deegan Motocross team, clothing and product line) will attract.”

Attract, is the direction that NASCAR is taking by bringing both Deegan and Pastrana, along with AMA Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael into the sport in hopes of attracting the younger extreme motorsports fans.

Carmichael competed in the 2009 Toyota All-Star Showdown, which is dubbed the “Daytona 500 of short track racing,” finishing 34th after starting 28th on the grid because of an accident on lap 142. Pastrana took a different approach then what Deegan and Carmichael did, by teaming up with NASCAR’s Michael Waltrip to form Pastrana-Waltrip racing.

Pastrana, talked about the opportunity to team up with Waltrip during his recent practice session, in preparation for his first official NASCAR start in next weekend’s All-Star Showdown. “I’ve looked up to Michael a lot. His whole business philosophy is like mine,” said Pastrana who took his first practice laps in a Waltrip Racing prepared K&N Pro Series Toyota Camry.

Pastrana also added that, “We are in it for the long haul I realize its gonna be a long and tough road. We need to figure out what we need to work on and where we are as the season progresses.”

Pastrana finished with, “The 2011 season get my feet wet see where we need to go and make the best of it. The team is looking at long term goals. We have the right people in place for us to get the first race in to see where we sit and make a game plan.” Waltrip was not at the track for the practice session, but will be at the race serving as the Grand Marshal for the eighth running of this prestigious event.

The anticipation of getting the chance to race in the NASCAR series is in its final stages for the sports newest up and coming star, with Pastrana ready to take on the challenge of racing against some of the series best short track racers. Last season’s K&N Pro West Series champion Eric Holmes said that, “Irwindale is a tough track to learn on, but Travis has some good people behind him that are teaching him.”

Pastrana was able to keep the car off the wall, and going in straight line during his first few laps on a somewhat cold night, which will probably be the same weather conditions the area will see for the feature event.

“It felt okay a lot flatter course then the other tracks I’ve tested at. I just want to get out there and start driving. The team put me with the best crew everything is in place for me to do well.” said Pastrana after coming in to make some adjustments on the car.

Pastrana also added that, “This is gonna take a lot of time. I look forward to it I can’t tell you what it’s like because I never done it. Bottom line we have high expectations but we need results first.”

The all wheel drive Rally Car that Pastrana drove last year, may help his transition into the NASCAR series when he said, “The more sideways you get the more gas you give it, and with this car the more sideways you get you give it less throttle. The looser it gets the better I feel I should do better because in rally the cars loose.”

Pastrana’s first start will not come easy since he will first have to qualify his No.99 Toyota Camry, against more experienced drivers who are still looking to keep their rides for the 2011 season.

“Qualify and then don’t crash. Get as much time as possible in the car to see where our foundation our base place is gonna be, “said Pastrana when talking about next weekend’s outlook.

Pastrana is scheduled to possibly compete in seven Nationwide races, along with some K&N Pro Series East and West races with the showdown being the first, and a target date sometime in August for the NNS.

“After the showdown get back and regroup and think about what we need to do are gonna do. We will do the NNS series midway through the season and get as many K&N East and West series race in. August is a possible target date for the NNS,” said Pastrana when talking about his long range goals.

The All-Star showdown is non-points event which is the premier event of the season, since both the K&N Pro Series East and West drivers are invited to participate. “Year in and year out, the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown has provided some of the best racing action of the season,” said Bob DeFazio, Toyota Speedway at Irwindale track operator.

DeFazio finished with, “Last year’s sell-out crowd at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale witnessed a race they will be talking about for years, and we are honored to once again host the pinnacle of short-track racing in NASCAR.

“Toyota Speedway’s graduated banking and multiple racing grooves are a perfect place to showcase this tremendous pool of talent in NASCAR. This event is a perfect way to give race fans a final send-off to the 2010 racing season and whet their appetite for more exciting racing in 2011.”

  • Knight Motorsports Management Forms Alliance; Announces 2011 Team

MOORESVILLE, North Carolina (January 21, 2011) – – Knight Motorsports Management (KMM) announced today that they have entered into an alliance agreement with Charlotte, North Carolina-based Tex Motorsports Marketing.

The alliance between Tex Motorsports Marketing owned by long-time Motorsports veteran Chris Ragle will allow the two entities to combine resources and assets in order to further enhance their client on multi-level and platform basis. The two companies will continue to operate as normal and separately but work side-by-side in an effort to strengthen their presence in the Motorsports community.

“I’ve known Chris (Ragle) for a long time and I could not be happier about today’s announcement,” said Knight Motorsports Management President Chris Knight. “We both have the same drive and goals. We both feel that we bring unique styles to the table that ultimately should circle back around to the best interest of our clients.”

Ragle, a native of Paradise, Texas nearly echoed his new partner’s sentiments.   “This affiliation between Tex Motorsports Marketing and Knight Motorsports Management is really an ideal situation for both parties and its clients,” said Ragle. “Not only will both parties benefit by allowing more resources at our fingertips, but it’s also a huge help to the Motorsports industry as a whole in the form that between us all, we have everyone covered from the short track level all the way to the top echelons of the industry.”

He added, “The knowledge and reputation Chris (Knight) has built at the ARCA level and above speaks for itself. He has built himself up over the years as a reliable and trustworthy resource that any program agenda would benefit greatly by adding his services to its organization. That alone has me excited on what we can build together over the foreseeable future.”

Additionally, KMM announced today the appointment of Kim Castongia as Vice President of Knight Motorsports Management. Castongia, a long-time fixture in the Motorsports garage will also serve as account manager to the company’s growing clientele. Castongia and Knight met in 2000 and have since developed not only a personal friendship but (she) assisted the reality of the official formalization of KMM.

Joining Castongia as an account manager in 2011 will be Angela Starke. A former Public Relations representative for Clements Racing and Matt Carter in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards and R3 Motorsports in the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2008, Starke will assist KMM in a vast variety of projects the newly founded company offers. Starke will officially begin her tenure by attending the 2011 ARCA season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February.

“I’m very proud of our team,” sounded Knight. “This sport is filled with a lot of great people but to have the team I’ve personally selected, I could not be happier. They all have the same ethics, responsibility and dedication it takes to work in this industry. This is their company just as much as it is mine. I don’t think we’re done just yet with our team, we’re just waiting on a few more announcements but I know that whoever we bring in down the road will fit the same integrity we all believe and strive in.”

Currently, Knight Motorsports Management will be representing clients this year in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, Late Models, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS), NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS), NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) and the USARacing Pro Cup Series. KMM is also hoping to expand to the IZOD IndyCar Series (IICS) in the foreseeable future. A full client list will be officially posted when the company launches their new Speed Media-designed website in early February.

KMM will also be the firm that handles the “Chris Knight Foundation”, a foundation started in 2010 by the Redford, Michigan native striving to give back to others in circles. The KMM team will unleash their plan for the foundation soon.

Castongia, Ragle and Starke join KMM partner Kurt Dietrich of Grand Rapids, Michigan who owns Speed Media, one of the official vendors and partners of the Mooresville, North Carolina based firm.

  • Indy Car, Prepared for 2011?

With the 2011 season looming just on the horizon, the premier form of open wheeled racing in North America appears to be more prepared than ever to get things started. This series has taken notice, asked some questions, and made a few changes to their overall program with the intent of giving the race fans, the paying customers, if you will, more value for their dollar.

The first and most obvious change is the name. No longer know as the Indy Racing League, this series has now been christened as “Indy Car”.  This change came to be after research by Indy Car officials indicated there were a significant number of people that were unfamiliar with the Indy Racing League, but were well aware of what an Indy Car was. Now that the differences between the IRL and CART have been resolved it only made sense to rename the series to something the race fan could relate to.

In what is seen as another positive change for 2011, Indy Car has revised the schedule to include races in Brazil, Japan, and two stops in Canada. The series also added a new venue with the addition of the Baltimore Grand Prix, a temporary street course in downtown Baltimore, Maryland. Indy Car will also return to New Hampshire Speedway after a 13 year absence, and a return to the historic Milwaukee Mile is slated for mid June. Chicagoland, Kansas, Watkins Glen, and Homestead-Miami will not host events during the 2011 season. These revisions allow Indy car to be exposed to new markets, and allow opportunity for growth, and additional revenues for race promoters, as well as Indy Car.

With a few exceptions, the teams, drivers, and sponsors have remained pretty much unchanged. It is certain that Team Penske and its’ line up of Ryan Briscoe, Helio Castroneves, and the 2010 runner up Will Power will be a force to be reckoned with in 2011. Andretti Autosport will field cars for Marco Andretti, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Danica Patrick, and of this writing it is uncertain who will replace Tony Kanaan who signed with DeFerran-Dragon Racing and will team with Raphael Matos. Chip Ganassi has expanded his racing empire with the formation of Service Central Chip Ganassi racing. This team will see Graham Rahall, and Charlie Kimball slated as the primary drivers. The Target Chip Ganassi team should remain without major changes, Scott Dixon, are signed for 2011, and Dario Franchitti will defend his title. Dreyer-Reinbold will be back with Paul Tracy, Justin Wilson, Ana Beatriz, and the return of Mike Conway. Team owners said they will be happy to see Mike back in the car, and fully recovered from his injuries suffered on the last lap of the 2010 Indy 500. Long time USAC star and team owner Sara Fisher will relinquish driving duties in 2011, and hand the keys over to Ed Carpenter.  JR Hildebrand , a veteran of Indy Light competition has been secured by Panther Racing to replace Dan Wheldon in the #4 National Guard Car. Dan is rumored to be talking with Chip Ganassi, but there have been no formal announcements made as yet. Other teams to watch are HVM Racing with Simona De Silvestro behind the wheel. Fazzt Racing with Bruno Junqueria, and long time veteran Alex Tagliani. KV Racing will come ready with Mario Moraes, Takuma Sato, and E.J. Visio in their stable.  You can never rule out the five car team of Conquest Racing, or The teams of A.J. Foyt, Bryan Herta, Dale Coyne or Newman-Haas.

With the revised schedule, and the majority of talent still in place, there is no reason to believe that the 2011 Izod Indy Car series will be any less exciting than in 2010. Last season saw two, three, and even four wide racing on the high speed, high banked ovals. The Indianapolis 500 was one of the most watched sporting events worldwide. The Street and road course races drew huge crowds. The innovative TV packages with patented “Side by Side” coverage that allowed viewers to never miss a minute of the action was a first in the industry. Overall, it’s easy to see why this is the Premier open wheel racing series in North America.

So, don’t hesitate, the first race of the season is almost upon us. The Honda Grand Prix in Saint Petersburg, Florida is set for March 25th through March 27th and would make a great excuse to visit the sunshine state, and get out of the cold, all while enjoying the stars, and cars of Indy Car.

  • Dreams Do Come True For Brett Hudson

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida (January 18, 2011) – – Chuck Norris once said, “Dreams do come true, if you want them bad enough. For Owensboro, Kentucky native Brett Hudson that statement could not have been more farther than the truth.

Last week, Brett Hudson and his Brett Hudson Motorsports (BHM) team participated in a three-day open test at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. After two and a half-days of testing, the team loaded up their hauler to make the trek back to Bluegrass State satisfied after Hudson impressed in his first superspeedway test session.

Under the leadership of former ARCA driver turned crew chief John Hayden, BHM unloaded Tuesday morning looking to get a good feeling on their No. 36b Dodge Charger. Utilizing some assistance from the 2008 ARCA Racing Series champion team of Allgaier Motorsports, it wasn’t hard to figure out that Hudson will be a sleeper heading into the season opener next month at Daytona.

Tuesday morning, the avid racecar driver posted the 12th fastest time. In the afternoon session, the team landed 21st out of 40 competitors who took to the daring restrictor plate track. Solid results in day one had the family-owned operation looking forward to day two.

Wednesday morning continued of single-car runs with Hudson in his Chrysler nameplate 19th on the sheets after 42 cars took their tango with the legendary race track. In the afternoon, ARCA Racing Series official opted to open the track to drafting with BHM taking a soft approach and keeping their focus on single-car runs but not ruling out dabbling a little in the drafting department.

Racing inches apart is nothing new to Hudson, but racing inches apart, three, four and sometimes five-wide at nearly 200 miles per hour is a whole new ballgame for the 23-year old. Wrestling very little in the draft, Hudson was able to thrust his Dodge Charger into the 13th position after nailing a time of 48.834 seconds amounting to a speed of 184.298 miles per hour.

“Drafting was pretty cool,” explained Hudson, who plans to make his ARCA Racing Series debut from Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway next month. “We have to concentrate on qualifying runs, because more than likely we’ll have to qualify on time. However, we knew we could not leave the track without doing some type of drafting. We wanted to make sure the car would “suck up” to the other cars. It’s a good piece, that’s for sure.”

Before loading up and heading home, the team elected to spend Thursday morning doing a couple more single-car runs. During the three-hour session, Hudson maneuvered his No. 36 Brett Hudson Motorsports Dodge Charger around the track in 49.804 seconds at 180.708 miles per hour, landing just outside the top-10 in 11th, his highest position on the sheets.

Pleased with their results, the team opted out of the Thursday afternoon session and began their 13 hour ride home to Kentucky planning to piece together a game plan that would ensure Hudson the opportunity to cross off an item on his bucket list, racing at the “World Center of Racing.”

“Overall, we’re very satisfied with the way the test went,” said Hudson, who has 21 ARCA Racing Series starts to his credits. “We came to Daytona with really no big expectations in mind except to get a good feeling for the car and keep making improvements. We did that and more.”   He added, “I have to thank John (Hayden, crew chief), Jared (Bartlett, car chief) and the entire BHM team for helping out at the test. John (Hayden) loves this restrictor plate racing and always has a great setup. I’m looking forward to coming back in less than a month and giving everyone else something to talk about.”

The Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona is the first of 19 races on the 2011 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. The first of two restrictor plate races this season is set for Saturday, February 12, 2011 slated for 4:00 p.m. live on SPEED.
