  • Champion Stickel Joins OSCAAR Mods

    Champion Stickel Joins OSCAAR Mods

By Clayton Johns (@cjohnsmedia) – Reigning Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modified champion Shane Stickel has announced he is joining the OSCAAR Modified tour for the 2013 season.

The Kitchener, ON native will be sporting his familiar #39 aboard a Troyer Chassis purchased from NASCAR Whelen Modified driver Rob McCormick out of Calverton, NY. Stickel’s campaign will be supported by MSD Machine Tool, Speedway Photo.ca, Shelane Properties, Paragon Collision Centre, MAC Contracting, Jungle Cat Designs, Huron Fasteners Inc., Creative Edge, and Abtech CAD/CAM.

The 23 year-old is excited to make the transition to a higher horsepower open-wheel car under OSCAAR sanctioning, and felt the timing was right for the jump.

“It’s still a new series and I don’t want to fall too far behind the guys that have started to race in it,” said Stickel.

Like any driver making a move to a new series, Stickel is expecting a host of challenges to go along with his new car. He believes the hardest part of the transition will be getting the car to perform up to his competitive standards.

“The Vintage modifieds are a way different car from a setup stand point,” said Stickel. “I have no experience with the kind of suspension components that are on an OSCAAR Modified. That’s going to be a huge learning curve on its own.”

Nonetheless, Stickel feels he may have an advantage over other newcomers to the series from full-bodied cars.

“The open-wheel experience (will help). I’ve only raced ovals for three years. Compared to a lot of the drivers out there, I’m still pretty new,” explained Stickel. “I’ve learned a ton … being that it’s an open-wheel car, how to race guys clean. It’s probably a natural fit for me to move on to this series.”

The overall task of taking on a new car, new series, and new set of competition has Stickel itching to pilot his new machine. So much so, the multi-time Waterloo Regional Karting Club champion has a tough time narrowing it down.

“What am I not looking forward to is a better question,” laughed Stickel. “I’m really looking forward to the OSCAAR series. I’ve heard it’s a great club and full of great people. To try and race a new car, that’s always exciting.”

Stickel is currently preparing to battle for a rookie-of-the-year title, one that will be nothing short of intense as more drivers continuously throw their name in the hat. Given Stickel picked up his ride late in the off-season, he cautions race fans not to panic if he is absent on opening day.

“To convert a chassis from the States takes a ton of work,” said Stickel. “I don’t know if I’ll be out for the first race, that’s still up in the air.”

Stickel intends to run a familiar vibrant paint scheme, similar to what he has run on his Vintage Modified for the previous three seasons.

“I’m a pretty meticulous guy. I like to keep my equipment nice,” said Stickel. “If anything, that’s why I might be a little bit late getting in. I don’t want to run something I’ve half-ass put together. I definitely want to do it right.”

For a driver in his early twenties, OSCAAR’s young core of drivers were among the factors considered in his search for a new racing home.

“I was the youngest person in the vintage modifieds,” said Stickel. “To see a series like this with a lot of people around my age, that can only mean things like friendship and getting along better at the track. I did miss that from go-karting.”

Despite the time constraints, Stickel will make every effort to be at Sunset Speedway for opening day on May 19. Sunset quickly became one of Stickel’s favourite tracks on the Vintage Modified tour and he hopes the success will translate to OSCAAR.

Menards Extends Sponsorship in ARCA Racing Series

(TOLEDO, Ohio – March 13, 2013) — Officials from the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) and Menards Inc. announced today that the Wisconsin-based home improvement retailer will continue their marketing presence within the 2013 ARCA Racing Series.

Menards has agreed to extend their presenting sponsorship role in ARCA, including an official company sponsorship, and will sponsor the Menards 200 ARCA Racing Series event at Toledo Speedway for a fifth consecutive year.

“We are proud to once again sponsor the ARCA Racing Series and look forward to another interesting season,” said Jeff Abbott, promotions manager and spokesman.  “We appreciate all the loyal Menards customers who continue to make us their choice for home improvement.  Our relationship with vendor partners Ansell Gloves and Scott brands and customers allows us to remain involved with ARCA.  We are both excited and grateful for this opportunity.”

“Menards motorsports sponsorship program in ARCA is pretty complex, but in its simplest terms, it is a business-to-business relationship between a retailer and its vendors,” said Mark Gundrum, Vice President of Business Development and Corporate Partnerships for ARCA. “The end result is increased product sales for the vendors, business for Menards, and a promotional program for both.”

The Menards 200 will once again highlight an “All-ARCA” weekend at Toledo Speedway in May. ARCA Racing Series Practice and Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell will take place on Saturday, May 18, along with racing by the ARCA Truck Series. The Menards 200 will start at 2 p.m. on May 19, and is scheduled for live broadcast on SPEED, part of Fox Sports Media Group.

“The Menards 200 ARCA Race at Toledo remains one of the most competitive, spirited events of the season,” said Abbott.  “We’re really looking forward to more exciting action on this short track and another great turnout by the fans.  We appreciate the opportunity to be the sponsor for the Menards 200 and thank all of our customers who continue to shop at our stores.”

Race fans will have the opportunity to “Save Big Money” on tickets to several events again in 2013, as Menards Stores will sell advance tickets for each at substantial discounts, including the annual stop in Toledo.

“Menards is our most important strategic marketing partner, not only for Toledo Speedway, but for the entire ARCA Racing Series,” Gundrum said. “Their involvement with the tour and our presenting sponsor positions them as a very important marketing partner for ARCA.”

  • Turner Scott Motorsports NKNPSE Previews: Bristol Motor Speedway

Turner Scott Motorsports NKNPSE Previews: Bristol Motor Speedway

Turner Scott Motorsports NASCAR K&N Pro Series East News & Notes: Bristol Motor Speedway

Welcome to the Series…Turner Scott Motorsports (TSM), which currently houses three full-time NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) and three full-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) teams, will expand their operation to include three full-time and two part-time entries in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (NKNPSE) ranks for the 2013 season.

First NKNPSE Starts…Turner Scott Motorsports and Austin Dyne, Ben Rhodes and Kenzie Ruston will all be making their first start in the NKNPSE at Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS) this coming weekend.

Austin Dyne…In 2012, Dyne earned two top-fives and eight top-10s in his rookie season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West (NKNPSW). With one less start than his closest competitor, Dyne’s strong effort allowed him to capture the Sunoco Rookie of the Year award by one point.

“I am really thrilled to be racing for a championship-caliber organization like Turner Scott Motorsports,” said Dyne. “I’m looking forward to kicking off the season at Bristol; I’ve only seen it on TV, but I am confident that we can get a good handle on the track and come out with a strong showing.”

Ben Rhodes… After his first full season of Late Model racing, 16-year-old Louisville, Kentucky, native Ben Rhodes will compete in seven events for TSM in the NKNPSE in 2013 with plans to run for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year and the championship in 2014.

“The 2013 season will be a learning season for me in the series,” said Rhodes. “We are only racing seven events so I can maintain my rookie status for 2014, when we will race the entire series and see if we can get Rookie of the Year honors. I am excited for my debut with the team at Bristol Motor Speedway. It is close to my home state, and it is one of the most-exciting places to race in the country.”

Brandon Jones… Fifteen year old Brandon Jones, a sophomore at Mooresville (NC) High School, who drove in the UARA and PASS series in 2012 as well as having made his inaugural NKNPSE start will drive in four different series for TSM in 2013, including the full UARA season, seven NKNPSE races, two NCWTS events and selected NASCAR Late Model Stock races.

“I feel like we have a great chance to contend for a solid finish in the series’ first points race,” said Jones. “Cale [Gale] and the rest of the Rheem crew has worked really hard this off season to put together some great equipment and I would love to reward them with a solid start to the season.”

Dylan Kwasniewski…Dylan Kwasniewski, the 2012 NKNPSW Champion, will compete for a championship in the NKNPSE with TSM in 2013.Kwasniewski tallied two wins, two poles, eight top-fives and nine top-10s in the NKNPSW in 2011. Not to be outdone by his performance from the previous season, 2012 was one for the record books. Kwasniewski went on to record three wins, six poles, 12 top-fives and 15 top-10s en route to becoming the youngest champion in NKNPSW history.

“I am really ready to hit the track at Bristol,” said Kwasniewski. “My Turner Scott Motorsports team is strong, and I know we have what it takes to have a very successful year together. Hopefully we got all of our bad luck out of the way in Daytona, and we can go out and contend for the win in our first points race of the season.”

Kenzie Ruston…A Super Late Model stand out, Ruston will move up to compete full time in the NKNPSE with TSM in 2013. In the 19 events in which she competed in 2012, Ruston scored six top-five and 12 top-10 finishes and was voted Speed51.com’s National Short Track Most Popular Driver, the first female to win the award since its establishment six years ago.

“I’m just glad the season is finally here,” said Ruston. “I’ve been looking forward to turning some laps at Bristol’s high-banks. My goal for this weekend is to keep the car clean for all 125 laps and be in contention at the end of the race.”

  • Tracy Hines Finishes Second & Seventh Indoors at Cedar Lake in a Midget

Tracy Hines Finishes Second & Seventh Indoors at Cedar Lake in a Midget

New Castle, Ind.—March 11, 2013— Indoor midget racing takes a combination of two very important elements to be in contention for wins. First, a fast car and second, a little bit of luck. Tracy Hines had both of those at various times this past weekend as he took to the track at the Cedar Lake Arena in New Richmond, Wisc., for the Sasquatch Indoor Nationals presented by Jack Link’s Beef Jerky, which served as the season opening two races for the Stark Automotive Group/Mid-State Equipment Badger Midget Series. When the checkered flag flew, he crossed the line second in the final feature, after coming home seventh on the opening night.

The finale of the two-day event was run in the afternoon on Sunday, March 10 and found Hines starting ninth on the grid for the 30-lap main event aboard the No. 75 Speed Quip Motorsports Chevrolet-powered Phantom. The race started with accidents that brought out the yellow flag twice before a single lap was completed, necessitating a pair of complete restarts.

On the third attempt at the start, Hines found himself in fourth. He would move into third on the seventh circuit, getting around David Gough. The veteran driver would move into second on lap-23, getting by early race leader Brad Kuhn. Hines battled lapped traffic late in the race as he tried to track down eventual winner Danny Stratton. He would cross the line in the runner-up position. Hines began the afternoon by finishing second in the second 10-lap heat race.

“It was an eventful start to the race to say the least,” said Hines. “That all helped us a bit and I was able to get a pretty good start the third time and run up front. It took a little too long to get into second and we just didn’t have enough time after that. It was a fun weekend and I really have to thank Roger and Lara Miller for letting me drive their car.”

Hines opened the two-day event at the Cedar Lake Arena on Saturday, March 9 with a seventh-place finish in the 30-lap main event. The native of New Castle, Ind., lined up sixth for the race, which featured numerous drivers that are veterans of indoor midget events. A number of cautions dotted the main event, including one that turned into a red flag with 10 laps to-go that brought the field to a stop to improve air conditions inside the Cedar Lake Arena. The night opened for Hines with a second-place finish in the fourth 10-lap heat race.

“That was a pretty demanding race out there,” noted Hines. “As is the case most time with indoors races, it was pretty challenging to get around people and you really had to set up your passes a couple laps before. We learned a few things on the first night that really helped us on Sunday.”

Hines returns to action on Saturday, April 6 at Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana with the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series. He is currently third in points with the series, just seven markers out of the top spot, after a pair of wins in Florida last month to open the season. Hines will make his next start in a midget the following weekend, April 12–13 at Kokomo Speedway as part of the inaugural Kokomo Grand Prix for the USAC National Midget Series.

“With how strong we ended the trip to Florida, I can’t wait to get back in the sprint car in a few weeks,” he stated. “Then it’s just one week after that and we are at Kokomo in the midget. It’s almost that time and I’m ready. We’ve been working hard in the shop and have everything ready to go.”

  • Kimmel grabs second top-five of 2013 at Mobile

Kimmel grabs second top-five of 2013 at Mobile

Frank Kimmel No. 44 Ansell/Menards Toyota Camry

    Post-Race Report

Mobile International Speedway – ARCA Mobile 200

    Race Recap:

    Race: 2 of 21

    Location: Mobile International Speedway

    Finished: 5th
Point Standings: 1st (tied with Mason Mingus)

Kimmel perseveres, notches second top-five of 2013

IRVINGTON, Ala. (March 9, 2013) — Frank Kimmel continued his resurgent season Saturday with a comeback fifth-place finish in the ARCA Mobile 200, the second annual ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards event at Mobile International Speedway.

Kimmel, the nine-time series champion whose 2012 title hopes were derailed by poor finishes in the first two races, scored his second consecutive top-five finish of 2013 — his second season with ThorSport Racing — when his No. 44 Ansell / Menards Toyota picked up four positions in the last 23 laps.

The finish marked an effective comeback as Kimmel’s car’s handling deteriorated two-thirds of the way into the race and, after running inside the top five for most of the event’s first half, Kimmel found himself a lap down, in ninth, after 160 laps with only 40 laps remaining.

“It seemed like after about 15 green-flag laps, the car would start slowing down,” Kimmel said. “And then it would get worse and worse as we ran. I don’t know what it was but we’ll have to figure out what’s going on with that.

“We just fell off too far. Everybody’s going to fall off — to lose a second or so (on tire performance) a lap — but we lost almost two seconds, so we’ve just got to make it run a little longer.”

Kimmel started the 200-lap race on the high-banked half-mile oval in sixth, but jumped into fifth on the first lap, as eventual winner Grant Enfinger took the lead and began to stretch his margin. Under the race’s third caution, at lap 63 Kimmel’s ThorSport Racing crew got him out of the pits in front of Enfinger and they restarted 13th and 14th, respectively, at lap 67.

Five laps later, when the top-five cars in the running order hit pit road, Kimmel, who had picked his way through traffic a little better than Enfinger, led laps 75-79.

“That was excellent,” Kimmel said of his crew’s work all day. “We were able to get through traffic a little better and stay ahead of (Enfinger) until another caution and I was able to lead a few laps. In the big picture of the race that’s a big point deal. But Grant and his team did a great job. They had everybody covered.”

Kimmel’s biggest challenge came after a restart at lap 108. Kimmel was second to Enfinger but gradually lost ground and fell into the clutches of his pursuers. Kimmel’s car quickly became almost undriveable, losing a lap to Enfinger in the process. But crew chief Jeriod Prince made some adjustments, a couple quick cautions resulted in Kimmel getting a free pass on lap 167 and after Kimmel made a quick stop at lap 168 to check for tire rub after contact on a restart at lap 165, with 29 laps remaining Kimmel restarted ninth.

“The mark of a good team is to battle through adversity, and that’s who handles bad stuff, the best,” Kimmel said. “On that middle run, for whatever reason, we really lost the handle on the car and it got really hard to drive. So we just had to persevere and get through that, we got the (free pass) and we got some luck and Jeriod made a couple adjustments on the car at the end and we got back up through there. It was all we could do.”

Kimmel picked up fifth position with only four laps remaining when he dove inside youngster Justin Boston heading into Turn 1. He pulled far enough away to prevent a repeat of 2012, when contact from an over-aggressive competitor spun Kimmel from third back to 17th at the very end of the race.

“This is what it takes,” Kimmel said of his team’s great start to the season. “When you have a good day, you’ve got to take advantage of it and when you have a bad day, you’ve got to do better than what you should’ve. And (at Mobile) I think we overcame and made the best of a bad situation so that’s all you can do.”

After finishing fourth in the season opener at Daytona, Kimmel is now unofficially in a tie for the series lead with SCOTT Rookie Challenge candidate Mason Mingus, who finished fourth at Mobile after winning his first career Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell.

After his car cleared post-race inspection Prince said he could see both sides of the coin after Mobile, but he was already working on solutions.

“Points-wise this season is way better, obviously,” Prince, who’s in his second season with Kimmel, said. “But performance-wise, as good as Daytona was, we really struggled here — the worst we’ve run in a while on a short track — so we’ve got some homework to do.

“They made some rule changes and adjusting to that has hurt us a little bit, but we’ll go testing and figure it out. Frank did a heck of a job coming back from being a lap down and getting a top-five finish.”

The ARCA Racing Series is off until April 28 when the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA 200 is scheduled at legendary Salem (Ind.) Speedway.

  • David Gravel Finishes Fourth in Finale at Las Vegas & Eighth in Tucson Filling in for the Injured Bill Rose

David Gravel Finishes Fourth in Finale at Las Vegas & Eighth in Tucson Filling in for the Injured Bill Rose

Watertown, Conn.—March 10, 2013 — David Gravel had never seen the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway until last Wednesday when he arrived at the half-mile for the first of two nights of racing at the state-of-the-art half-mile. Likewise, he had never been to Tucson International Raceway in Arizona. On top of that, the native of Watertown, Conn., had never sat in Bill Rose’s No. 6 car until he arrived the afternoon of the Las Vegas opener. None of that mattered though, as the 20-year-old quickly got up to speed in his first pair of races filling in for the injured driver, earning a season-best fourth-place finish on the second night of the “Sin City Showdown” and followed that up with an eighth-place showing at Tucson International Raceway.

“For being in the car for the first time it was a great three races,” said Gravel. “It’s exciting to know that we can be competitive in another car. I’m looking forward to continuing next weekend at Tulare (Thunderbowl Raceway). I’m still learning things about the car each time I’m on the track and feel more comfortable every time I climb behind the wheel. We’re only going to get keep getting better.”

Gravel began the finale of the two-night event at Las Vegas on Thursday, March 7, by turning the 15th-fastest lap in time trials, aboard Rose’s Fire Text Response Maxim, which put him on the pole of the third eight-lap heat race. He finished second in that contest to earn a spot in the dash. Gravel would come home sixth in the dash and lined up on the outside of the third row for the 30-lap main event.

The East Coast racer used a strong start to move up a spot at the start of the A-Feature. He was running fifth when the first caution flag of the night flew on the fifth lap. A long 20-lap green flag stretch of racing followed with Gravel remaining in fifth for most of those laps. The final caution flag of the night came out on lap-25. He restarted sixth and got around Wayne Johnson and Donny Schatz to move into fourth and would cross the finish line in that same position.

“The track really suited my style and our set-up in Las Vegas,” he shared. “The track was a little one groove and I went where people weren’t and was able to pass a bunch of cars. We had a really good car the first night, but our results didn’t show it, due to some bad luck. We definitely showed what we were capable of on the second night.”

Gravel earned his second consecutive top-10 finish on Saturday, March 9 in the Wildcat Shootout Presented by NAPA Auto Parts at Tucson International Raceway. He lined up 16th and quickly began moving forward. He broke into the top-10 on the sixth-lap and by the halfway point of the 30-lap contest found himself in eighth. At one point, he passed three-time World of Outlaws champion Sammy Swindell, Jason Sides, who is currently second in points, and five-time series titlist Donny Schatz on consecutive laps. In his debut at Tucson, Gravel was 16th in time trials, which put him sixth in the first eight-lap heat race in the three heat program. He finished sixth in that race to transfer to the 30-lap main event where he finished eighth.

“Most of the guys were running the bottom at Tucson and I was running the top and able to get by a lot of them,” Gravel noted. “The outside was really working for me most of the race, though I did lose a couple spots at the end. For my first time at the track I was pleased and it gives us some good momentum heading into next weekend.”

Gravel began the West Coast swing in Las Vegas with a 13th-place finish on Wednesday, March 6, battling a bent front axle and broken shock in the main event. He lined up 17th and was up to 11th by just the eighth lap. He timed in 17th on the night, missing the heat race inversion by just one spot. After finishing seventh in the first heat race, he would race his way into the A-Feature via the B-main, where he came home second.

Gravel will continue to fill in for Rose this coming weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., which will mark his first-ever racing trip to the Golden State. Gravel, who is contending for the 2013 World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Award, is currently tied for ninth in points, just 38 markers out of the top-five.

Building Momentum: Kraig Kinser Finishes Ninth in Tucson

Bloomington, Ind.—March 10, 2013— Every night of racing with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series is a learning experience, no matter how many years a driver has been on the road. With a new tire this year, Kraig Kinser and his team are taking in everything they can as work to find the right balance and combination on the race car. They learned quite a bit during the opening three races of the West Coast swing and capped off the first week of that trip with a ninth-place finish at Tucson International Raceway in Arizona in the Wildcat Shootout Presented by NAPA Auto Parts.

Kinser lined up 14th for the 30-lap main event at Tucson on Saturday, March 9 aboard the Casey’s General Store/Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim and steadily worked his way forward, moving into the top-10 by the 10th circuit. The race was slowed by three cautions, including one on the initial start that led to a complete restart. An open red flag period gave teams a chance to work on their machines as well during the A-Feature. The ninth-place finish was Kinser’s third top-10 showing of the season and moved him up to seventh in the series standings.

“The track was very fast on Saturday night and you really had to pick and choose your spots to make passes,” said Kinser. “We made some good changes to the car over the course of the night and were pretty good in the feature. We didn’t quite start the West Coast swing how we were hoping at Las Vegas, but we’ll keep working hard and moving forward and have plenty of races left.”

Kinser kicked off the two-night event at Las Vegas on Wednesday, March 6 with an 18th-place finish, after being involved in a couple of cautions. He was caught up by a spinning car on the ninth lap and then had a flat tire on lap-18 that forced him to the work area. Kinser opened the night by turning the seventh-fastest lap in time trials of the 40 drivers in attendance. He finished third in the third eight-lap heat race to earn a spot in the 30-lap A-Feature.

In the finale at Las Vegas on Thursday, March 7, the native of Bloomington, Ind., finished 19th after suffering a broken U-joint early in the night. He timed in 23rd-fastest and was slated to line up sixth in the second eight-lap heat race, but was unable to start that event, which put him in the B-main. Kinser started fifth in the B-main and finished fourth to earn a spot in the 30-lap main event.

“We battled both nights in Las Vegas and that’s all you can do on nights like that when you have a bunch of bad luck,” Kinser shared. “Racing 90 times a year, you are bound to have a few nights like that here and there and you just have to make the most out of it, salvage what finish you can and move on. You can’t dwell on nights like that.”

After the first six races of the 2013 season, Kinser is seventh in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series standings, just 28 markers out of the top-five. He has three top-10 finishes, including a season-best third-place finish on the second night of the season at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida. Kinser returns to action next weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., for a two-night event as the World of Outlaws continue their early season West Coast swing.

“We have a few days now to get ready for Tulare and will keep tweaking and fine-tuning the car,” Kinser noted. “I’ve always enjoyed racing at Tulare and there are some great fans out there. Hopefully Mother Nature continues to cooperate and we can get all the races in. When you are just racing on the weekends, once or twice a week, you have to be on the track to stay in a rhythm.”

Venturini Rookies Shine at Mobile Speedway; Kyle Benjamin, Justin Boston & Taylor Ferns Earn Top-10 Finishes

Concord, NC (March 10, 2013– On the heels of their dramatic ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season opening victory at Daytona, Venturini Motorsports (VMS) shifted gears and turned their attention to short track racing this weekend at Mobile International Speedway.

Saturday’s VMS entry list for the ARCA Mobile 200 consisted of ARCA championship contender, Justin Boston, Venezuelan native, Milka Duno and a pair of teenagers making their ARCA debuts, 15 year-old Kyle Benjamin and 17 year-old Taylor Ferns.

Kyle Benjamin, a native of Easley, S.C., has caught the attention of the racing world with performances well beyond his 15 years.

Living up to the pre-race hype, Benjamin delivered the goods.

Driving his No.15 “The Truth Band” sponsored Chevrolet; Benjamin showcased his raw talent and battled veteran drivers, en-route to a second-place finish in his highly anticipated ARCA debut.

“What an experience to come here in the ARCA car and accomplish what we did in our first race out,” said Benjamin. “Venturinis gave me a great car and the team worked hard all weekend. They did a great job and Kevin (Reed) made great calls on the pit box. We had an almost flawless day.”

Benjamin, who qualified fourth, battled race winner, Grant Enfinger for the top spot leading a total of 26-laps during the race. Benjamin’s second-place finish earned him SCOTT Rookie Challenge honors for the ARCA Mobile 200.

Coming off a near perfect showing with four wins and seven fast-time awards in his Super Late Model last month at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway, Benjamin made more headlines this weekend by becoming the youngest competitor in the 61 years of ARCA racing.

Benjamin, driving part-time for VMS in 2013 will make his next start at Salem Speedway on April 28th.

23-year old driver, Justin Boston, driving the No.25 ZLOOP Computer & Electronics Recycling Toyota rebounded nicely from a disappointing 31st place finish at Daytona with a solid sixth place finish at Mobile.

“Today’s race is exactly what we needed after our Daytona finish. Rebounding and getting a solid finish under our belt was important for this year’s championship run,” said Boston.

Justin Boston, a native of Baltimore, Maryland is focused on a full season effort in the ARCA series.

Qualifying ninth, Boston kept his sleek looking ZLOOP Toyota in the top-10 the entire day. With a limited stock-car racing resume the former motocross racer continues to impress his new team and adjust to his new surroundings within his 3,400 lb. stock car.

“The car was good all day long and I think we’ll be even better when we bring the car back to the track. Can’t thank ZLOOP and VMS enough for giving me the opportunity to represent them both. I plan on doing my part with strong finishes for all their hard work.”

Boston looks to build on his recent success and carry it over to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East this weekend where he’ll be fielding the No.25 VMS entry at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Another impressive debut was turned in by Shelby, Michigan’s, Taylor Ferns. Ferns, the all-time leading feature winner among women in United States Automobile Club (USAC) history made a strong impression with her solid 10th place finish.

With her sights set on a top-5 finish, Ferns was running in the 6th position with 12 laps to go before a hard charging car spun her going into turn one. Keeping her composure, Ferns got back in line to salvage her inspiring ARCA debut.

“My first ARCA race…that was awesome,” said the energetic Ferns. “I had a great car and learned a bunch from the guys on the team, especially my chief, Kevin Caldwell. I’ve still got a lot to learn as I’m transitioning from open-wheel to stock cars. I’m not use to shifting on the restarts, so I definitely need to work on that part, but overall, a great day for our team.”

Ferns, who qualified fifth, drove an impressive race behind the wheel of her No.55 Motor City Auto Transport Toyota. Following suit with teammates Benjamin and Boston, Ferns showed consistency and proved she’ll be a driver the ARCA field will have to contend with every time she hits the track.

Ferns, the 2011 USAC Mopar D1 Midget Champion, is scheduled to make six more starts in the ARCA Racing Series this year, with entries at Toledo, Elko, and Iowa Speedways. She will also race at larger tracks such as Pocono Raceway and Kentucky Speedway, and compete in the Labor Day dirt race at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds.

Caracas, Venezuela driver, Milka Duno who signed on with VMS during the off-season made her return to Mobile this weekend driving her No.35 CANTV/Milka Way Chevrolet.

Coming off her career best qualifying effort at Daytona (outside pole position), Milka Duno drove a solid race Saturday afternoon taking the checkered flag in the 14th position, giving VMS four top-15 finishes in the 200-lap event.

Duno, who qualified 17th for the ARCA Mobile 200 consistently picked up speed throughout the day gaining valuable short track experience which will undoubtedly provide more confidence going into ARCA’s next event at Salem Speedway on April 28th.

With nearly a month off before the next scheduled ARCA event Venturini Motorsports looks ahead to next weekend where they’ll be pulling double duty at Bristol Motor Speedway, fielding Justin Boston in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event and making their team debut in the NASCAR Nationwide Series with Daytona winner, John Wes Townley behind the wheel of the No.25 Zaxby’s Toyota.

  • Enfinger takes checkered flag in ARCA Mobile 200

Enfinger takes checkered flag in ARCA Mobile 200

(IRVINGTON, Ala. –  March 9, 2013) — Grant Enfinger used a rocket re-start with fewer than 30 laps remaining and held off a late challenge from Kyle Benjamin Saturday afternoon to win the ARCA Mobile 200.

Enfinger, a local crowd favorite, took the lead on lap 172 when he ducked under 15-year-old Kyle Benjamin, then used another re-start with nine laps to go to stretch his lead and win his first-ever ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards event.

“I knew we were going to get here, I just didn’t think it would take this long,” Enfinger said in Victory Lane. “I started knocking on the door in 2009 and I don’t know how many second and third-place finishes I had.”

After Enfinger drove the Triple K Construction Ford into victory lane, a throng of family and friends surrounded him. Some of the loudest cheers came when he donned a University of Alabama Crimson Tide ball cap.

Anderson Bowen finished third, Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell winner Mason Mingus fourth and Frank Kimmel fifth.

Enfinger is from nearby Fairhope, Ala. and considers Mobile International Speedway a home track.

“I’ve wanted to win for so long,” he said. “To do it in front of the home crowd is something special. A lot of these people, family and friends, can’t come up north when we race. This is something special.”

Enfinger started second but took the lead by turn two of the first lap. He stayed out front much of the day, although Benjamin put a big challenge into him. During one of the longest green flag runs of the day, Benjamin was able to pass Enfinger. He pitted and still came out in front as his pit crew cheered him on. But, with 29 laps to go, Enfinger was stronger on the re-start and stayed in front the rest of the way.

“He was a little better than us on new tires,” Benjamin said. “I hated that the caution came out right there. We did all we could today.”

Benjamin, the SCOTT Rookie Challenge winner for the ARCA Mobile 200, was driving the same Venturini car that went to victory lane at Daytona International Speedway with John Wes Townley. He became the youngest driver in ARCA Racing Series history.

“I’m happy with my team and my crew chief,” Benjamin said. “They did an awesome job and Kevin made great calls. We had an almost flawless day.”

Bowen was another driver that stayed up front all race. He was driving in his first ARCA race.

“I feel like I accomplished my goals,” he said. “We kept our car in one piece and had a nice top five finish.”

There were a few on-track incidents. Spencer Gallagher and James Hylton were involved in one mishap. The cars of Cody Lane and Bo Lemastus also sustained damage during the day.

Michigan teenager Taylor Ferns started fifth and was running up front for much of the day when her got was damaged with 12 laps to go.

“It was so much fun,” she said. “It’s too bad what happened at the end, but I learned a lot. I like the longer races, it feels like its more of a team effort.”

Race promoter Tommy Praytor was pleased with the crowd and the race.

“Everyone here saw some great racing today,” he said. “There was a lot of two and three-wide racing in the corners. It’s not an easy track to get around, but I think it was a hometown guy using some of his hometown experience to get around the track and picking up his first win.”
