UNOH Battle at the Beach-Daytona International Speedway

    February 21, 2013

Dalton Baldwin started 32nd and battled his way to the front and captured a 10th place finish on Tuesday night in the inaugural UNOH Battle at the Beach at Daytona International Speedway. Baldwin, making his rookie debut in the 2013 season in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour division finished strong after early struggles.

The 150 lap exhibition race was a non-points event and each driver was solely focused on bringing home the trophy from the prestigious track. The result was a race that included 17 cautions and a green-white-checkered final restart. Steve Park claimed the win in the wild finish.

Practice and Qualifying: Baldwin and his team struggled to get the right setup throughout the practice sessions. The car handled well but did not have enough speed through the corners. He was 29th in the final practice.

“We decided in the heat race that we would pit and try a few things instead of racing for position,” Baldwin said.  “Then after the heat, we decided to change a bunch of things, back to what the car was at Charlotte last year, when we felt the car had speed in the corners.”

Race Highlights: Baldwin began the race at the back of the field in the 32nd position but by lap 85 had made his way into the top twenty.  He continued to make steady progress forward and avoided the numerous wrecks. With only 5 laps to go, the final caution of the night set up the GWC restart.

Baldwin was in 8th position for the final start and managed to stay out of trouble once again as another crash ensued on the final lap. With cars wrecking in front of him, he made his way through the field, ending the night in 10th position.

“We started 32nd, and as we were sitting on the grid, my dad and I decided to just ride for 100 laps, let them all wreck, and then we’ll see where we’re at,” Baldwin explained.  “Well, that plan fortunately panned out really well. Just lap after lap, it was like, there goes two, there’s another one, just dropping like flies.”

“Then as the race wound down, we started racing a little harder, and a little harder. Then we got down to the end, we were in 8th, and I felt we were better than a couple cars in front of us. But something broke with the clutch or transmission, and the car wouldn’t go on the restart or coming out of the turns. So that hurt us bad on the green-white-checkered and we ended up 10th.”

“To avoid all those wrecks and come from 32nd to 10th with a clean car was an amazing feat. Our first top 10 and we stayed on the lead lap in just our 3rd race is just awesome, we’re all extremely happy. Words can’t really explain it.”

Extras: One of Dalton’s favorite moments of his Daytona experience was the opportunity to interact with other drivers.

“I fortunately got to sit next to Steve Park (the eventual winner of the race) during the driver autograph sessions and I got to talking to him about how to drive the cars and get around the track. He gave me some great advice,” Baldwin told me. “I don’t have much experience on flat tracks, especially with zero banking. On top of that, I don’t have much experience in these cars. So I can just go off my experiences and natural driving knowledge.

“When I get a chance to ask veterans like Steve for advice on how to drive the track and the cars, I obviously have to take it. Being an 18 year old driver with dreams bigger than himself, it is truly an honor and a fortune to get to have a conversation with someone like Steve Park.”

    Start: 32nd                             Finish: 10th                             Points: N/A

Next Race: The next race on the schedule for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour is March 16th at Caraway Speedway. This will be the first points race of the season.

Hayley Claims NASCAR K&N Pro Series Event; Park Wins Modified Race

Green-White-Checkered Finish Wraps Up Exciting Trio of Short-Track Clashes

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Cameron Hayley came from behind during a green-white-checkered finish to win the inaugural UNOH Battle At The Beach NASCAR K&N Pro Series race Tuesday night at Daytona International Speedway.

It was only fitting that the third and final race of the two-day event concluded with cars trading paint, given that the first two races ended with last-lap contact and late lead changes.

Hayley took advantage when the race leaders tangled in Turn 2 to drive to the victory.

Fifteen-year-old Gray Gaulding finished second in the Krispy Kreme Toyota, while Puerto Rican Bryan Ortiz took the third spot in the Putinka Vodka Toyota.

“It was a tough race overall,” said Hayley, who hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. “When I was sitting there on that last restart, I was thinking they were going to wreck in front of me. There’s going to be something happening in front of me. My crew chief and my spotter coming over the radio telling me to be patient and when you see a hole – go.”

Tuesday’s nightcap, the feature of the UNOH Battle At The Beach, showcased 28 drivers from 11 different U.S. states, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Spain.

Other notables included Ben Kennedy, son of International Speedway Corporation CEO Lesa France Kennedy, who finished fifth.  Kennedy is the first France family member to race at Daytona International Speedway in a stock car.

“It was a great experience to run at DIS, really cool what the track has put together for tonight,” Kennedy said. “Unfortunately we got knocked around and messed up our rear end for the rest of the night. Really should’ve been in Victory Lane tonight but proud of the guys. We’ll go on to Bristol and set our sights on the championship.”

Steve Park Wins UNOH Battle At The Beach NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Race in Another Wild Last-Lap Finish

Park Bumps Then-Race Leader Mike Stefanik in Turn 2 to take Checkered Flag

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Steve Park raced to the finish line to capture the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Race, the first of two races Tuesday night at the UNOH Battle At The Beach at Daytona International Speedway.

Park, a Daytona Beach resident, overtook Eric Goodale coming out of Turn 2 after making contact with Mike Stefanik’s back bumper on the white flag lap.  Eric Goodale finished second in the RBS Showroom Chevrolet, while Ted Christopher took third place driving the Cape Cod Copper/Silver Dollar Construction Chevrolet.  Stefanik claimed 13th place in his Robert B. Our Co./Canto & Sons Paving Chevrolet.

“You can win races all over this country but you are not going to have a Daytona trophy like we have here,” said Park, who had previously raced in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. “I’ve had the opportunity to race here 14 or 15 times and I never had a Daytona trophy but now I do. It’s a big deal for me.

“We started almost dead last and won the race,” said Park, who drove a Ford sponsored by UNOH. “We went from the outhouse to penthouse. I don’t think we had the fastest car.  I thought if we could put ourselves in the position and have the wheels on the car, we would have something to race with at the end.”

Tuesday night’s opener included 18 cautions in the 150-lap, 60-mile race.

Considering the dramatic finishes to races so far during the UNOH Battle of the Beach series, everybody expected the fireworks to continue when the K&N Pro Series featured a green-white-checkered after Cale Conley spun virtue of contact from D.J. Kennington.

The first lap went clean with Michael Self holding the lead, however the second lap was where it would go down. In the middle of turns one and two, Gray Goulding would get into Self, sending him around, collecting Greg Pursley, Derek Thorn, Kyle Larson and Kennington.

Goulding would grab the lead, holding it down the backstraight. However, going into the final set of turns, he would lock up the front wheels, causing him to slide up the track. That would be enough for Cameron Hayley to get underneath Goulding and grab the win by inches.

“This is the most incredible moment ever,” Hayley said. “I’ve been waiting to come here and win. I don’t know what to say. It just feels amazing.”

The 16-year-old out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada ran the full K&N Pro Series West schedule last year driving for Bill McAnally, finishing seventh in points with five top fives in 15 races. This year he moves over to Gene Price Motorsports, running as a teammate to Greg Pursley in the car that won the championship last year with Dylan Kwasniewski.

“It’s huge,” he said. “Gene Price Motorsports gave me a heck of a piece. He gave me the car to do this. It just feels great.”

Goulding, who finished second, was making his first ever K&N Pro Series as the 15-year-old looks towards tackling the full schedule ahead.

“I just got to thank my team; everybody that has worked so hard,” Goulding said. “I hate having to do that, but I felt like we got a little help. It’s just one of those racing deals. I hate seeing that. Great finish coming to the line.”

Coming to the line, Goulding felt that he slipped in some fluid that had been leaked on the track.

“Just too late to come back,” he added. “I’m never going to forget this. Daytona, it’s amazing. It’s my first K&N car so it felt awesome.”

Bryan Ortiz came back through the field to finish third after spinning on lap 19. Ryan Gifford finished fourth after going for a spin with Ortiz and Jorge Goeters on lap 40. Ben Kennedy rounded out the top five. Kennedy, the great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., became the first member of the France family to compete at DIS in a stock car.

Thorn finished sixth, followed by NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Champion D.J. Kennington in seventh. Kennington started the race from rear after being spun on the last lap of the qualifying heat race earlier in the day.

Self was credited with eighth after the spin. He had made his way from the back of the field to the front after a spin on lap 19.

“Same thing that has happened all weekend,” he said. “It’s short track racing. You’re racing for $20,000. That’s huge. We knew it was coming. We had a solid lead with about three to go…..and it’s just guys going for it. I probably would’ve done the same thing if second or third……We made an impression down here. We came from last to first and passed everybody on the track.”

Greg Pursley and Kyle Larson rounded out the top 10. Pursley came back to run inside the top five after being spun by Conley with 27 laps to go while leading. Pursley led 127 laps of the 150 laps.

Conley, who had been in the thick of the lead battle, finished 11th with Noel Dowler 12th. NASCAR Mexico Series Champion Goeters didn’t have a good night, going for a spin on lap seven before finishing 13th.

2012 K&N Pro Series West Champion Dylan Kwasniewski finished 27th after wrecking on lap 54 with David Mayhew.

“Just got ran over by my old teammate,” Kwasniewski said.

John Hunter Nemechek, son of Sprint Cup Series driver Joe Nemechek, finished 28th after being involved in a wreck just after a restart.

“It’ a tough night,” Nemechek said. “A guy (Chuck Buchanan Jr.) stopped in front of us and we had no place to go.”

Same verse, different series. On Monday night, it was Kyle Larson giving the bump to CJ Falk for the win in the UNOH Battle of the Beach NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model race.

“To come out of Daytona with a trophy is pretty unique,” Park said. “That’s why this NASCAR Home Tracks deal down here is cool. Kids who aspire to move up to Sprint Cup can come to Daytona and race their trophy and win a trophy.”

On Tuesday night, Steve Park got into Mike Stefanik off of turn two to take the victory.

“I didn’t want to get into Mike,” Park said. “He’s a good friend of mine. I was getting pushed (by Eric Goodale) as bad as I pushed him.”

Park, a native of East Northport, New York, has had success in the Modified ranks before, winning 16 races between 1991 and 1996. Park then moved up the NASCAR ranks, including a pair of Sprint Cup Series wins under Dale Earnhardt Incorporated. However, a crash under caution in 2001 at Darlington Raceway put his career on hold. Since recovering, Park has been running the odd race here and there.

Stefanik, who led from mid-race till the spin, was credited with a 13th place finish.

“That was just crap,” Stefanik said. “It feels just as bad as Irwindale getting dumped under caution with one lap to go. This one feels just as bad, if not worse, cause there was only one more turn to go and then say good night. It’s a tough game, tough freaking game. I just want to watch it and see what happened. Got hit once, and then got pushed around so he can say what he wants, blame it on whoever he wants, I don’t care.

“I’ve never dumped a leader and been proud of that. I think Steve’s too big of a guy to do that.”

Eric Goodale would finish second with long-time modified competitor Ted Christopher.

“Tonight was definitely pretty interesting,” he said. “Too many cautions, too bad for the fans. All in all, from where we came from, it was a good night for us. I’m proud of my team, we’ll go home and get ready for the rest of the season”

Doug Coby and Patrick Emerling rounded out the top five. Justin Bonsignore, Brian Loftin, Cole Powell, Ken Heagy and Dalton Baldwin completed the top 10.

Todd Szegedy started from the pole and led the race’s first 126 laps, but he was forced to head down pit road on Lap 127 after breaking a suspension piece in the front end.

Kyle Larson was looking to continue his winning ways in the UNOH Battle of the Beach wars, however hit the front stretch wall after missing a shift on the restart.

There was a scary moment when Danny Bohn flipped on his roof and caught fire. He would get out of the car, suffering no injuries.

Szegedy, out of Ridgefield, Conn., claimed the pole position as a result of a coin toss between the two heat winners.  By choosing the inside position the entire field from the second heat followed in order of their finish to make up the inside column for the main event. Szegedy scored his seventh consecutive top-five finish in Whelen Modified Tour points in 2012.

In the first heat Larson got the best of 2011 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Ron Silk. Nine-time NASCAR champion Mike Stefanik finished third.

The lone caution in the first heat was for an accident by NASCAR veteran competitor Steve Park, who has 197 Whelen Modified Tour starts to his name along with 183 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts.

Szegedy took the checkered flag in the second qualifying heat, which was slowed due to caution on three occasions, followed by Eric Goodale and Danny Bohn in second and third.

The feature race for the Whelen Modifieds is scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. start. Coverage on SPEED and MRN will begin at 7 p.m. this evening.

Tracy Hines Finishes Third and Eighth at New Smyrna to Open USAC Midget Season

Tracy-Hines-LogoNew Castle, Ind.—Feb. 19, 2013— It’s the goal of every driver to start the season on a strong note and with some consistency. Tracy Hines did exactly that as he finished third in the 2013 season-opener for the USAC National Midget Series and their pavement championship at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida, and wrapped up the two-night event with an eighth-place performance.

Hines, piloting the Parker Machinery/Powered by Toyota Spike, began the first night at New Smyrna on Sunday, Feb. 17, by turning the ninth-fastest lap in time trials. He lined up third in the first of two scrambles and finished fourth. Each of the two scrambles were inverted by six, with the finishing positions of those 12-lap contests determining the starting lineup for the main event. Hines lined up on the inside of the fourth row for the 30-lap A-Feature at the high-banked, half-mile. The native of New Castle, Ind., fell back a couple of spots at the beginning of the main event before making a late race charge to take the third and final spot on the podium from Tanner Swanson.

“The car really came out late in the race,” shared Hines on Sunday night. “For the first race of the season to come home third was a pretty good result. We were trying a few things and learned a number of things that will help us down the road. It gives us a good baseline for Monday nightand to gain some momentum for the rest of the year.”

On Monday night, Hines was fifth-fastest in time trials, which put him on the outside of the second row in the first 12-lap scramble. Hines started fourth and finished fifth in the scramble, which was delayed by nearly an hour-and-a-half, due to the track lights going out. The veteran driver lined up seventh for the 30-lap A-Feature and came home eighth to earn his second straight top-10 finish to open the season.

“We were fast at the beginning of the night and just couldn’t quite make up any ground in the heat race or the main event,” he noted. “We are getting closer to where we need to be. The next pavement midget race is at IRP (Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis) where we always do well, so I’m definitely looking forward to that one.”

Hines, who is currently seventh in the USAC National Midget Series Pavement Championship standings, just three points out of fifth and 20 markers out of the lead, will remain in Florida this week to kick-off the 2013 USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series season at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala. Three nights of racing are scheduled, beginning on Thursday, Feb. 21 and running through Saturday, Feb. 23. The next race for the USAC National Midget Series will be the Dirt Championship opener at Kokomo Speedway in Indiana on Friday, April 12 andSaturday, April 13.

“We have a bit of time until the next midget race and quite a while until the next pavement race, so we’ll work on a number of things when we get back to the shop to get a bit faster,” he shared. “As a driver you always want to finish just a little further up, but for the first two races of the year to have a podium and just be outside of the top-five in the other, we’ll take it.”

Kraig Kinser Earns a Pair of Top-10 Finishes at Volusia Speedway Park

KraigKinserBloomington, Ind.—Feb. 18, 2013— Entering the season-opening World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida, Kraig Kinser wanted to at least equal his performance from last year at the half-mile. He did more than that, as he exceeded his results from 2012, by finishing third, ninth and 11th in the three races for the series during the 42nd Annual UNOH DIRTcar National Presented by Summit Racing Equipment. Kinser heads back north fourth in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship standings.

“All in all, things went pretty well at Volusia,” said Kinser. “We were fast all week, especially in time trials and put ourselves in a good position on a couple of those nights. We learned a lot about the new tires and got up to speed fairly quick on those. You always want to finish a few spots higher, but with the caliber of cars that were at Volusia, to finish as well as we did, I can’t complain.”

Kinser opened the 42nd Annual UNOH DIRTcar National Presented by Summit Racing Equipment with a ninth-place showing on Friday, Feb. 15 in the Casey’s General Store/Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim. He timed in third-fastest to earn three bonus points in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship standings. He finished third in the third eight-lap heat race to earn a spot in the dash where he finished third. Kinser ran among the top-10 for the duration of the 30-lap main event, which was slowed by four cautions and a red flag period, crossing the line ninth to earn his first top-10 finish of the season.

“We just of kind of missed the set-up in the feature,” he shared. “We still finished in the top-10, but where we were starting we probably should have finished in the top-five or even on the podium. You’ll have those nights and you have to learn from them and move on and we still had a strong showing and ran with some good cars.”

On the second night of the event, Kinser earned a season-best third-place finish as he continued his strong start to the 2013 campaign. The third-generation driver lined up fourth for the main event and ran as high as second over the course of the 30-lap contest, which had just one yellow flag. The native of Bloomington, Ind., opened the night by turning the 10th-fastest lap in time trials. He finished second in the second eight-lap heat race to earn a spot in the dash where he came home fourth.

“It was a great run and a confidence booster for sure,” said Kinser on Saturday night. “We’ve been good since we unloaded for practice earlier in the week. We put ourselves in a nice position by getting into the dash and had a really good set-up for the feature. This gives us some good momentum going into Sunday night, as we know we have a good big track program right now.”

The 2005 winner of the Knoxville Nationals wrapped up the UNOH DIRTcar Nationals Presented by Summit Racing Equipment with an 11th-place showing on Sunday, Feb. 17 in a race that was slowed three times in the final three laps for cautions and once for a red flag. Kinser recorded the fifth-fastest lap in time trials of the 36 entrants at the half-mile. He finished fourth in the first heat race to transfer to the 30-lap main event, where he lined up 13th.

“We rolled the car on the trailer in one piece and with everything that was going on the last few laps in that race, that was an accomplishment in itself,” he said. “We started in the middle of the pack and the track was so fast that it was tough to do a lot of passing, so you had to kind of pick and choose your spots wisely. We learned a few things that should come in handy later in the year on the bigger tracks.”

Kinser was scheduled to compete in both of the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions events at Volusia on Wednesday, Feb. 13 and Thursday, Feb. 14, but that pair of races fell to rain and was not rescheduled.

Kinser, who is currently fourth in the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series standings, on the strength of two top-10 finishes, returns to action on Wednesday, March 6 and Thursday, March 7 at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, followed by a trip to Tucson International Speedway in Arizona on Saturday, March 9, as the series begins its early-season West Coast swing.

“We have a couple of weeks to prepare for the West Coast trip and we’ll make the most of the time in the shop,” Kinser shared. “We have a good foundation to build on and some momentum as we head west. To leave Florida in the top-five in points is great and we showed that we are fast and we know what we are capable of. I can’t wait to get to Las Vegas in two weeks.”

Bobby Labonte Racing Starts Off 2013 with a Win

Pearson Jr. Claims Victory at East Bay

BobbyLabonteRacing_LogoTRINITY, NC (February 18, 2013) – Bobby Labonte Racing (BLR) and Earl Pearson Jr. returned to Victory Lane Saturday night after overcoming engine troubles at East Bay Raceway Park.  The team had been in Tampa, Fla., for a week of races on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) tour and finished the trip on a high note by winning Saturday’s feature.

BLR started Wednesday night’s heat strong with some great competition.  Pearson Jr. was leading Heat 3 when something went wrong with the engine.  Because it was not a points race, the BLR team decided to take the rest of the night to regroup.  The crew, lead engineer Kevin Rumley and Pearson Jr. gained more valuable time when Mother Nature dumped rain on the area, moving Thursday night’s race to Saturday afternoon.

The BLR team, which includes Kevin Rumley, Lee Roy Rumley, Steve Shaver, Justin Labonte and Bryan Liverman, had the No. 44 Lucas Oil Longhorn Chassis ready to go for Friday night’s races.  The team won its B-Main event, which put Pearson Jr. starting the feature in 18thposition.  The driver known as “The Hurricane” was back in full force and tore through the field to gain 14 spots and finish with a fourth-place finish on Friday night.

“We were very happy with the car Friday night,” said Pearson Jr. “That was about the first time we’ve been able to have our newly redesigned chassis out on the track. We planned on testing late January but the weather in North Carolina didn’t cooperate.

“With the addition of Kevin, redesigning the Longhorn chassis, and having Kevin’s dad, Lee Roy, on the engines, we’ve been able to make great strides in a short amount of time during the off season.”

On Saturday, the team took the momentum gained on Friday night and was ready to capitalize.  Pearson Jr. steered his Longhorn Chassis to the front of Heat 4 for the win and a fourth-place starting position in the feature.   On Lap 37 the No. 44 suffered a flat tire, forcing Pearson Jr. to pit and go to the rear of the field.  However, knowing he had a great car, the driver tore through the field and on Lap 52 took the lead from Don O’Neal.  The Hurricane led the remainder of the feature and took the checkered flag for his first win since July 2010.

“It feels great to be back in Victory Lane.  It’s been a long time,” Pearson Jr. said.  “Thanks to Bobby and the whole team, this has been a group effort.  It’s taken everyone working long hours the last month but well worth it.  Special thanks to Lucas Oil for the support.  It’s an exciting and happy time for all of us at BLR.”

BLR takes a couple nights off and heads to Volusia Speedway in De Leon Springs, Fla., looking to pick up where they left off at East Bay.  The team will be back in action Tuesday at Volusia.

    About Bobby Labonte Racing:

BLR is located in Trinity, N.C., and owned by 2000 NASCAR Champion Bobby Labonte. The team was formed in 2007 and immediately won back-to-back Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series championships. The organization is sponsored by Lucas Oil, Sunoco Race Fuels, Archdale Drug, Coca-Cola, ALLSTAR, Tiger Rear Ends, BERT, Butlerbuilt, Hyperco, SHY, Wilwood, Sweet, TWM, Dyers Top Rods, Weld Wheels, Bell, Hoosier Tire, PRC, Mechanix Wear, Larry Wallace Engines, ASI Racewear, Xtreme Graphics, Hank Thomas Performance, Wiles Drive Shafts, Bazel Race Fuels, FK Rod Ends and Peterson Fluid Systems.

    About Longhorn Chassis

Longhorn Chassis was founded in 2010 by NASCAR Champion Bobby Labonte, along with his brother and two-time NASCAR Champion, Terry Labonte. After numerous successful seasons as a Dirt Late Model team owner with driver Earl Pearson Jr., Labonte decided to take it one step further with his racing operations and the team started building their own race cars, in shop. The first two late model chassis built out of Longhorn Chassis went to Justin Labonte and the house car, driven by Earl Pearson Jr. Pearson would debut his Longhorn Chassis at the North/South 100 in Florence, Ky., where he finished a solid second, he’d later record Longhorn Chassis’ first Victory at the 2010 Dirt Track World Championships at West Virginia Motor Speedway. With just a couple of racing season under their belts, and numerous wins, Longhorn Chassis has already proven its strength and ability on the track.
