The Rolex 24 at Daytona always bring out the stars as NASCAR and Indy Car drivers alike try to tackle sport car’s toughest race. After making his debut last year, two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip will return to the race, once again driving a Ferrari 458 Italia.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Waltrip said. “Last year was a lot of fun to get to race in that historic famed event.  I always grew up admiring the guys that got to run in that race, and it was quite an honor to be part of it.”

The draw to the event is the experience, doing something that you never thought you’d do.

“That’s been the most fun thing about getting to race the Ferrari all around the world is just to get to experience different venues and different parts of the world racing cars,” Waltrip commented.

The event also is a special opportunity for different drivers to connect at different times, and Waltrip brought up having breakfast in Le Mans with Allan McNish.

“The guy had so much success in road racing,” Waltrip said. “You just are sort of in awe of what some of those guys have been able to do.

“Tom Kristensen who sat right beside me one morning, he’s won Le Mans like a hundred times, I think.  But just to be able to rub shoulders with guys you’ve seen have success in road racing, and it’s really cool to get to know them a little bit.”

Other experiences that stand out for Waltrip including hanging out with Brian Johnson from AC/DC and seeing Harley Haywood make some laps.

“When I was a kid, he was one of my favorite racers,” Waltrip said of Haywood. “So, yes, it’s unique and it’s fun, and you actually sort of get used to it, and you’re able to battle side beside with them. It’s really rewarding to be able to match skills.”

Waltrip will be joined by co-team owner Rob Kauffman, Michael Waltrip Racing NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Clint Bowyer and Portuguese Endurance veteran Rui Aguas.

While it may seem like an easy switch from one car to the other for a driver, there is drastic differences in the performance as Waltrip referenced the amount of horsepower the Cup cars have compared to the sports cars, as well as the braking.

The Cup cars have so much horsepower,” he said. “That’s their main commodity is all the power that it has.  They don’t stop real well, and honestly they don’t handle too well.  And the Ferrari is the opposite.

“It has a significant amount of power, but nothing like a Cup car.  But when you go to hop on the brakes, that baby comes to a stop, and you can really whip it through the infield.  So that’s what’s so fun about getting to drive the Ferrari.”

That difference between the two is what makes it fun and that’s why Waltrip brought forth Bowyer to join him at the event. At first when Waltrip asked Bowyer, he declined the offer. However, over time, Bowyer changed his mind and decided he wanted to be apart of it.

“It was just him thinking about how cool it would be to be in Daytona, racing the road course, something that he had never done before, and driving the Ferrari for 24 Hours,” Waltrip said. “It just was more than a dirt racer from Kansas could pass up.”

Waltrip added that Bowyer did good during the test and began to pick up things quite quickly. However, that wasn’t a surprise as Waltrip knew Bowyer would do good after winning the race at Sonoma last year.

“The best in the world run NASCAR, and he was able to win the race,” Waltrip continued. “So I knew he would do pretty good, and he did just that.”

On the flip side, when Bowyer did originally decline, Waltrip had asked Denny Hamlin to join them and Hamlin had accepted. Now Waltrip had the job of telling Hamlin things had changed.

Denny understood though,” Waltrip said. “He’s kind of having a busy off-season himself with the new baby coming, so he understood.”

The race will present its challenges, including the unique infield road course that they run at Daytona, as well as the disparity between the DP class and the GRAND-AM class.

You always have to be on your toes,” Waltrip commented. “You rarely get a free lap or a full lap without having one of those guys closing on you.  So you really have to watch your mirrors.”

Beyond the disparity in speed, you also have to watch the talent level of some guys as some will be really good, while others not so much.

“What’s most important, in my opinion, is to remember that you’re there to take care of the car the best you can, and make it for 24 Hours and see if that gives you a shot to get a podium finish,” Waltrip commented. “We were able, fortunately enough, back in 2011, we got a third place podium finish in the 24 Hours of Spa, so that was pretty cool to have success in NASCAR, win the Daytona 500, and be in Europe, standing there on the podium, getting champagne sprayed on you because you’ve got a top finish in a Ferrari.  That was something that was probably my favorite moment so far in my road racing.”

  • TRG Announces Full Season ALMS Assault

TRG Announces Full Season ALMS Assault

01ee85135261458b83fe6e772674eb46PETALUMA, CA (January 16, 2013) – With just under two months before the start of the 2013 American Le Mans Series season, The Racer’s Group (TRG) has put together a program likely to be one of the most competitive programs ever seen in the GTC class. The combination of experienced drivers Ben Keating and Damien Faulkner coupled with the brand-new Porsche 997 GT3 Cup car and backed by one of the top GT teams in motorsports has TRG positioned for a championship run.

Both drivers are signed on for the full season. Keating has raced multiple times with TRG, including two Rolex 24’s at Daytona. He is coming off his second SRT Viper Cup Championship, winning six races and earning eight podiums.

Damien Faulkner joins Keating with an abundance of experience and seat time in Porsches, having competed in the Porsche Supercup and Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain before that. The veteran Porsche driver ran with TRG at Daytona a year ago and has been one of the fastest drivers in the ALMS in recent years with a pair of victories that included the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2011, six poles and four fastest (race) laps.

Adding even more skill and familiarity to the team is the addition of veteran professional driver Craig Stanton for the endurance races — Sebring and Petit Le Mans. Stanton has driven numerous times for TRG and has been quick and consistent throughout his driving career.

The three are expected to test at the Sebring Winter Test, February 7-8.

    Kevin Buckler on Ben Keating:

“All of us at TRG are seriously proud to be announcing this program with Ben Keating. Ben is one of the fastest, most committed, most competitive non-full-time professional drivers that we have ever had driving for us. I mean this guy has a real job outside of racing, but you wouldn’t know it to look at the stopwatch!”

    Keating on racing in ALMS:

“I am extremely excited. I love this class for two reasons. First it is a spec class. I love knowing that we always have a car that is capable of winning, and we don’t have to get involved with balance of performance. And second, it is a Pro-Am structure. It requires a gentleman driver to really factor into each race.

This will be my first season in ALMS and I believe we will be very competitive. That is exciting. There is nothing much better than having the real opportunity to stand on the podium at the top level of sports car racing in North America.”

Buckler on the strength of the 2013 Line-up:

“Ben and Damien are going to be a lethal combo here, but you add in a brand-new Porsche GT3, Craig Stanton as the third driver in the long races, some of the best crew in all of GT racing, and of course, TRG; and I believe we are going to have a solid run at a championship this year! I couldn’t be happier to be leading the charge for this formidable effort.”

Keating on sharing the seat with Faulkner, and the TRG team:

“I expect great competition and I love a challenge. Damien and I will have a great time this season. TRG knows how to win. We have a great team, a brand new car, a great driver lineup, and all the ingredients to win the championship. What else can you ask for?”

    About TRG:

TRG is a full-service motorsports company offering a total driver ladder approach, as well as comprehensive sponsorship and business opportunities. For drivers, this approach starts with track days, goes to club events, up into street stock series and culminates in the ultimate goal of professional motorsports. The Racer’s Group was founded in 1993 and has been competing at the top level of motor racing. The team boasts Rolex Series GT championships in 2005 and 2006 and holds the record for the most wins in GRAND-AM with 32. The team’s resume is highlighted by four championships, four Rolex 24 Hour at Daytona victories, a 24 Hours of Le Mans win, a victory at Petite Le Mans and the longest standing ALMS podium run with 16 in a row.

  • Canadian Touring Car Championship to ‘launch’ its 2013 season at the CME

Canadian Touring Car Championship to ‘launch’ its 2013 season at the CME

CTCC-CME-Medium-550x500TORONTO, ON – Heading into its seventh year of competition, the Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Continental Tire (CTCC) has truly earned the distinction of being Canada’s premiere professional road racing series. Appropriately, the series’ rise to the top has mirrored that of the Canadian Motorsports Expo powered by Inside Track Motorsport News. The two will join forces again on February 8-10 at Toronto’s International Centre, as the CTCC will use its presence at the show to reveal its finalized 2013 racing schedule.

“The Canadian Motorsports Expo is a great place for us to launch our season,” said series founder and President John Bondar. “The buzz surrounding the show really kicks the anticipation for the upcoming year into high gear.”

The Canadian Touring Car Championship features three distinct divisions, in simultaneous competition, in races usually 30 minutes in duration. All classes are based on production compact models, with marques ranging from Hyundai to Honda, and from MINI Coopers to Toyota Scions.

The CTCC’s top level, Super Class cars feature heavily modified engine and suspension components, and advanced aerodynamic packages. Their slightly less powerful Touring Class counterparts are more limited, with only minimal modifications permitted. In 2012, the new B-Spec class became the CTCC’s entry-level division, with the only allowable changes to the showroom stock sub-compacts made in accordance with regulations pertaining to driver safety.

Last season (2012), the Canadian Touring Car Championship competitors performed in front of more than 700,000 spectators, showcasing their talents on weekends in support of such events as: the Formula One and NASCAR Nationwide races in Montreal, the American Le Mans Series at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and the Firestone Indy Lights series on the temporary GP3R street circuit in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. And the preliminary 2013 racing calendar looks just as impressive.

“We plan to confirm a seven date schedule at the CME,” continues Bondar. “All of our race weekends will again be double-header events. This arrangement gives our drivers and teams plenty of time to interact with the race fans from across Ontario, Quebec and the rest of Canada as well as the northern United States.”

The Canadian Motorsports Expo will give the CTCC an opportunity to introduce even more potential race fans to the series. Throughout the show, the CTCC display will feature videos of 2012 race action. Taking centre stage in the CTCC booth will be the 2012 Touring Class winning Blanchet Racing Honda of Damon Sharpe, as well as the B-Spec Mazda 2 Media car.

Sharpe and Bondar will be on hand to discuss the past and the future of the Canadian Touring Car Championship series, as will Dominique Longval (Manager-Marketing and Communications) and many of the series’ technical support staff.

“The 2013 season is looking to be our best so far in terms of car count and driver interest, and the Canadian Motorsports Expo is going to be a great starting point for this year,” concluded Bondar.

ABOUT CTCC: The Canadian Touring Car Championship (CTCC) presented by Continental Tire is the only truly Canadian professional road racing series, showcasing race cars based on their street stock versions. Gaining worldwide attention and respect, the CTCC has been the starting point for many Canadian sportscar drivers now competing on the international scene. Its graduates include such notables as Kuno Wittmer, Paul Dalla Lana, and David Bensadoun. Fans can follow the Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Continental Tire on the series’ website, www.TouringCar.ca.

As fans look towards the upcoming season, a highlight on the Camping World Truck Series calendar is a trip to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park on September 1st. In anticipation for that event, CTMP continues making improvements to the facility, and will use the 7th Annual Canadian Motorsports Expo powered by Inside Track Motorsports News to highlight those changes.

The track used to be known as Mosport, till new owners took over last season and partnered with Canadian Tire Corporation, resulting in renaming the venue Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. The new owners have continued to make changes to 810-acre property and modifications to the track.

Last year saw improvements to the 3.967 km road course, which the Camping World Truck Series is slated to compete on during Labour Day weekend. It will mark the first time the trucks have crossed the border.

“Obtaining a race in one of NASCAR’s ‘big three’ divisions had been a goal of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park,” Myles Brandt, President and General Manager for CTMP, said. “To see this dream come true as quickly as it has, shows that CTMP has become a destination for the best of racing divisions.”

One of the biggest additions throughout this off-season is the new Event Centre, which is a modern building that will house the administration offices, media centre, timing and scoring, banquet facilities and multiple hospitality suites.

“The Event Centre is the ‘business’ hub of the track, and brings the circuit technically and esthetically into the new era,” Brandt said. “And while the Event Centre has been one of the major projects this past year, it is only part of what we have accomplished, and just another stepping stone in the refitting of the facility.”

Among featuring a race for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, the 2013 schedule for CTMP includes Round 5 of the American LeMan Series, SCA Trans-Am competitors, Star Mazda Series, the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, the Canadian Touring Car Championship, Porsche GT3 Challenge Canada by Michelin, Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship and the CASC-Ontario regional races.

They will also continue to host a full slate of Saturday night stock car racing on their half-mile speedway, as well as a date for the Canadian Tire Series and OSCAAR Super Late Models. Lastly, action will continue at both the karting circuit and the Driver Development track.

The Canadian Motorsports Expo, slated for February 8-10 at Toronto’s International Centre, is an event to kick-start the new season of racing for the fans by allowing tracks and businesses to connect with drivers and fans. In addition, special guests are slated to appear as part of the event.

“This is where our motorsport season starts,” concludes Brandt. “The timing works for us, everything will be finalized and we’ll be ready to go.”

  • Dylan Kwasniewski to Race in NASCAR K&N Pro Series East for Turner Scott Motorsports

Dylan Kwasniewski to Race in NASCAR K&N Pro Series East for Turner Scott Motorsports

Dylan KwasniewskiMOORESVILLE, N.C. (JANUARY 16, 2013) – Dylan Kwasniewski, the 2012 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West (NKNPSW) Champion, will compete for a championship in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (NKNPSE) with Turner Scott Motorsports (TSM) in 2013. TSM, which currently houses NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) teams, will expand their operation to include three full-time and two part-time entries in the NKNPSE ranks. Kwasniewski will first take to the track for TSM in the UNOH Battle at the Beach in Daytona, which the young driver locked himself into by winning the 2012 NKNPSW Championship.

Kwasniewski got his start in racing at the early age of five, competing in go-karts. Moving up the ranks, Kwasniewski went on to become the youngest champion in track history in the Semi Pro Legend Car series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Kwasniewski made his NASCAR debut in 2011, finishing an impressive fifth place in the NKNPSW final point standings despite not competing in the first race.  Kwasniewski tallied two wins, two poles, eight top-fives and nine top-10s. Not to be outdone by his performance from the previous season, 2012 was one for the record books. Kwasniewski went on to record three wins, six poles, 12 top-fives and 15 top-10s en route to becoming the youngest champion in NKNPSW history.

“It is really exciting and an honor to join Turner Scott Motorsports, especially at this time when the organization has just announced their expansion,” said Kwasniewski. “Everyone I’ve met at TSM so far is dedicated and committed to results and performance. Moving from the West Series to the East is a natural progression for me as I continue to develop as a driver. The chance to drive for Turner Scott Motorsports under the direction of Steve Turner, Harry Scott Jr. and veteran Mike Greci came up last fall. I knew immediately it would be a perfect fit for me. TSM has consistently put the best equipment on the track in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series, and I know they will do the same in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, giving me the best opportunity to win races and make a run at the championship this year.”

“Being able to add another young talent like Dylan [Kwasniewski] to our portfolio of drivers for 2013 is great for this entire organization,” said Steve Turner, co-owner of Turner Scott Motorsports. “Not only is he is talent on the track, but he is a amazing young man off the track. Everyone at Turner Scott Motorsports is looking forward to working with Dylan.”

Details regarding Kwasniewski’s sponsor, crew and car number will be provided in the near future.

    About Turner Scott Motorsports:

Turner Scott Motorsports was established in 1999 by Texas businessman Steve Turner, who was joined by partner Harry Scott Jr. as co-owner in 2013. This season will mark the fourth season of full-time NASCAR competition for the organization, which expanded in 2011 from a two-truck operation in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) to become the largest stand-alone multi-series team in NASCAR’s top-tier touring series. The team earned its first championship when James Buescher captured the NCWTS title in 2012. Turner Scott Motorsports operates out of an 110,000 square-foot state-of-the art facility in Mooresville, N.C. The Chevrolet-backed team has created alliances with General Motors’ powerhouse team Hendrick Motorsports, which provides engine support for both its NNS and NCWTS programs, and Earnhardt Technology Group for drive train and suspension technology assistance. • Ambrose to Drive in Rolex 24 At Daytona

Ambrose to Drive in Rolex 24 At Daytona

Daytona_International_Speedway_logoDaytona Beach, Fla. (January 10, 2013) – Even with the best laid plans, sometimes you have to call an audible. Fortunately for the defending Rolex 24 At Daytona Champions Michael Shank Racing, the audible is an excellent play as the team has confirmed that NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose will join Michael Shank Racing for the 2013 Rolex 24 At Daytona to drive the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ford-Riley.

Ambrose, who impressed in testing with the team during the “Roar Before the 24” over the weekend, will supplement the driving line up of AJ Allmendinger, Justin Wilson, John Pew, and Ozz Negri as Negri continues to heal from an off-season testing injury.  The Roar testing proved productive for the Shank organization, as the team led five of eight practice sessions during the weekend between the two team Daytona Prototype entries.

“We couldn’t have been happier with how quickly Marcos gelled with everyone on this team,” offered Mike Shank. “Obviously he’s very fast in the car, but he was also great out of it. That’s hugely important for a race like this–you need to have everyone pulling in the same direction. He fits that perfectly. We are incredibly lucky to have someone like him interested in racing for us. Ozz is coming back quickly, but we wanted to go ahead and commit to having Marcos with us now.”

Negri will continue to push ahead with his physical therapy and expects to be able to compete in the 51st running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona. While he was frustrated not to be able to test the car this past weekend, he has his eyes on the bigger prize as the team looks to make it two in a row.

“The biggest thing for me is to not do anything that keeps this team from winning the race again,” said Negri, who suffered the leg injury while mountain biking. “It was hard to watch everyone test this weekend, but I still was very proud of the results. We’ve been working very hard on our set ups and it was good to see such a strong test. Marcos is a good guy and has the right attitude with this team. I’m happy to have someone like him as my teammate and hopefully I can contribute to another big result in a couple of weeks.”

Ambrose has previous experience in the Rolex 24 At Daytona and with the NASCAR Preseason Thunder kicking off this weekend, is getting plenty of seat time on both the oval and the 3.56-mile road course at Daytona International Speedway as he prepares to kick off a busy season.

Beyond his natural speed and hard-working attitude, Ambrose brings a range of shared previous experiences with several members of the No. 60 driving line up, from the similar struggles of  Justin Wilson fighting his way up through the open wheel ladder in England, to being teammates at Richard Petty Motorsports with AJ Allmendinger.

“I had a good time with the Mike Shank guys this weekend,” said Ambrose, who has two NASCAR Sprint Cup victories to his credit. “”I’m here for Ozz, and for Michael Shank Racing, just trying to get through a difficult time with Ozz’s injury,. I’m only here to help. I feel privileged to be with this team, it’s a championship team. It’s a lot of fun to be in this car, it’s beautiful and the speed really flies out of this car! I feel really comfortable behind the wheel and I just want to help anyway I can.”

Michael Shank Racing will target a return to victory lane at Daytona International as the 2013 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series season kicks off January 26-27.

    About Richard Petty Motorsports

A performance and marketing driven company, Richard Petty Motorsports, co-owned by NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty and successful business entrepreneurs Andrew Murstein and Douglas Bergeron, is one of the most recognized brands in all of motorsports. Alli Owens Makes a Come Back

AlliOwensSouth Daytona, FL – Her face and name were among the regulars in the ARCA garage between 2008 and 2010. She was a national spokesperson for several organizations. This young lady even sat on the front row at Daytona in the ARCA race in 2009, but hasn’t been heard from or seen much of in the past couple of years until now.

Alli Owens has announced she will be making a solid effort to return to motorsports in full force in 2014. Her only condition is that she is fully funded. “I want to put myself in a perfect scenario this time. Taking time away from the sport has allowed me to mature as an individual and business woman which has prepared me for this comeback journey”.

From a public point of view it looked like Owens just vanished at the end of her ARCA effort in 2010 with Venturini Motorsports, but that wasn’t the case. Her four year partnership with Electrifying Careers came to a sudden end when the economy put a strain on blue collar America and unions. “In the four years together, the program increased by three hundred percent. Numbers were great and the ROI was gaining, but we understood what had to happen. It was sad to see it come to an end”, Commented Owens.

After scrambling to try to find funding and falling short, Alli chose to step away from the only thing she knew (racing) and began to build her personal life. She married long time NASCAR Mechanic Paul Chodora in 2011 and soon became a mother to daughter, Braelynn Everlee, who is now a little over a year old. Paul and Alli are expecting their second daughter in early June of 2013.

“I knew people assumed having a baby is why I stopped racing, but they were wrong. Being a mother was always part of my life goals and it just worked out where the time came when my sponsorship ended. Having a second child was an easy decision after our 2012 potential sponsorship deal fell through two weeks before leaving for Daytona to race. I was over the broken promises and major let downs. I had to step away for a while for my sanity and for my family’s sake.”

Alli Owens made a bold statement to her family, friends, and fans in early December of 2012. She declared that it was time. Time to return to the driver’s seat, time to set the record straight about mom’s still being able to follow their dreams after child birth, time to be an example for her daughters, and most importantly it is time to finish what she started at the drop of each green flag!

Owens said, “Our second child will be here in less than six months, so that is my personal deadline to have solid potential sponsorships in the pipe line. I will need time to be in the gym getting my strength, weight, and endurance back to competitive standards. I also need time to get back in the seat and regroup on my feel for the car and being behind the wheel again.” She continued, “I know there is going to be people that will doubt me being able to do this. I will respect their opinions but I will continue to move forward. I’m doing this for all the people around the world that are looking for a symbol of empowerment, for ‘I can do this’ encouragement, for little children like my own kids who need healthy stable idols instead of Hollywood or reality TV, and it’s for me to know that I can believe in myself and that hard work really does pay off.”

Owens reports that she is going to take smart steps to get back to the top of her game. She is thinking of returning to the ARCA Series and possibly NASCAR K&N Series to regain familiarity with the variety of tracks and then add select NASCAR Camping World Truck races once she feels like she is ready. “This is going to be a smart transition for me. I rather race my way to the top and let my finishes decided how quickly I will move up the racing ladder” Alli said with a determined look on her face.

“I’ve already won three of the greatest rewards of all, a wonderful husband and two daughters!” she added a quick remark, “I think I am more excited to hear Braelynn tell everyone that her mommy beat the boys”!
