Trey Starks to Make Chili Bowl Debut

Trey StarksPuyallup, Wash. — Jan. 9, 2013 — Trey Starks is well aware of the history, prestige and aura of the famed Chili Bowl Nationals. After all, his father John competed in the Chili Bowl during its formative years, finishing a very solid sixth in the 1995 edition of the star-studded event, which draws drivers from a multitude of racing series and disciplines. Trey will follow in his dad’s footsteps this year, as he’ll open his 2013 racing campaign in the Chili Bowl, which will mark his first career start in a midget.

Starks will pilot a Spike with a Stanton Mopar engine, owned by Jim Ferns under the banner of Tracy Hines Racing. Hines, the 2005 Chili Bowl winner, will set the car up and serve as crew chief for Starks. Ferns’ daughter Taylor, who is the winningest female in USAC history, claimed the 2011 USAC D1 Midget Series championship driving for her father, and will also be competing in the Chili Bowl.

“The Chili Bowl is a pretty amazing event,” said Starks. “This is my first time out here and with all the cars and drivers it’s pretty overwhelming. It will be good to have a few days to see how the format and everything works before I go back on the track on Friday. It was good having some practice the other day and we got a few good laps in during that time.”

The Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire opened last night and runs through Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Tulsa Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla. A field of well over 250 entrants is split into four qualifying nights. Starks will take to the track on Friday, Jan. 11 for Vacuworx Global Qualifying night, with the top-three finishes in each of the four preliminary features moving directly into the main event on Saturday, Jan. 12. The high school junior turned his first laps in a midget on Monday during practice day.

“My dad will be here this weekend and he will definitely have some good advice from the times he raced here,” noted the younger Starks. “Having Tracy (Hines) working on the car is a huge help as well, with all the laps and experience he has here. With my dad and Tracy working together, we should fare pretty well.”

Starks, who hails from Puyallup, Wash., competed in a variety of 410 and 360 winged sprint car events in 2012. He was victorious twice, winning at Kings Speedway in Hanford, Calif., in April, as well as his home track of Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash., in September. Starks raced at 18 different tracks last season in nine states with five series. He wrapped up the season with 17 top-10 finishes, of which 14 were top-five performances, including 12 podium finishes.

“The track here at the Chili Bowl is definitely different than any other track we ran on last year or will run on this year,” explained Starks. “This will be the first time I’m racing without a wing, so it will be different for sure. You really need to get some laps and get a feel for everything before you can really go into it. It’s great to be here and it’s going to be a fun week.”

The third-generation driver made his first appearance at both the famed Knoxville Raceway in Iowa and the legendary Eldora Speedway in Ohio in 2012. In his first trip to each of those half-miles he won a heat race to earn a spot in the World of Outlaws dash. Starks returned to Eldora in the summer for the Kings Royal and to Knoxville for the Knoxville Nationals and 360 Knoxville Nationals in August.

In a limited number of starts with the World of Outlaws last year, Starks earned the KSE Racing Hard Charger Award three times. That honor goes to the driver that passes the most cars in the A-Feature each night. The young driver recorded a pair of 12th-place finishes among the seven Top-15 performances he turned in with the series.

Trey Starks and Starks Racing would like to thank their valued partners: BR Motorsports, FX Signs, King Racing Products, Masco Petroleum, Northwest Powerdercoating & Sandblasting, Starks Timber Processing and T&C Concepts.

University to Host Officials Training this Saturday

(TOLEDO, Ohio) – Officials from the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) and The University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) have announced that the diverse Lima, Ohio-based school will extend its contract as the Official and Exclusive Educational University of the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards for 2013.

The program is highlighted by the UNOH/ARCA Race Club, an internship program designed to allow students to participate in real-world situations as crew members on ARCA Racing Series teams. Thirty-plus students annually participate in the ARCA Race Club, working with existing ARCA teams during the course of the full ARCA season.

“More than 40 UNOH students have applied for the ARCA Race Club Program,” Jeff Jarvis, UNOH President said. “It’s a great program, and one that provides real-life training for kids who aspire to work in motorsports.”

The 2013 season marks the 10th that UHOH has served in this official capacity with the ARCA sanction. The program also offers cash contingency awards to those teams actively utilizing students as part of the internship program.

“The ARCA/UNOH partnership is one of the most gratifying of any I’m involved in,” commented Mark Gundrum, VP Business Development and Corporate Partnerships for ARCA. “The program helps the students; it helps the teams, and it helps individuals who seek to continue their education through the scholarship. It’s a great program.”

In addition, UNOH will continue to offer $10,000 in scholarship funding annually to eligible ARCA members, or their immediate family members.

UNOH Hosting ARCA Officials Tech Training Seminar Saturday

The University of Northwest Ohio will be hosting the annual ARCA Racing Series officials technical training session in the High Performance Motorsports Complex at UNOH Saturday, January 12.

Series officials, in preparation for the 2013 season, will learn technical measures regarding race, qualifying, impound and pit road procedures.

The UNOH complex features a wide-array of educational tools for automotive enthusiasts, including a 500-foot launching pad for drag racing classes, an eighth-mile asphalt oval for testing, and an obstacle course for testing off-road technology.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards has crowned 30 ARCA national champions in 60 seasons since 1953, and has toured over 200 race tracks in 26 states since its inception. The series has tested the abilities of drivers and race teams over the most diverse schedule of stock car racing events in the world, visiting tracks ranging from 0.375 mile to 2.66 miles in length on both paved and dirt surfaces as well as a left- and right-turn road course in its most recent season.

Founded by John and Mildred Marcum in 1953 in Toledo, Ohio, the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) is recognized among the leading sanctioning bodies in the country. Having completed its sixth decade after hundreds of thousands of miles of racing, ARCA administers over 100 race events each season in four professional touring series – the ARCA Racing Series, the ARCA CRA Super Series, the ARCA Truck Series, and new in 2013, the ARCA Midwest Tour – in addition to local weekly events at Ohio’s Toledo Speedway and Michigan’s Flat Rock Speedway.

Concord, NC (January 7, 2013) — Seventeen-year old driver Taylor Ferns from Shelby Township, Michigan made headlines last month toping the speed charts with Venturini Motorsports (VMS) during the 3-day ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards open testing session at Daytona International Speedway.

Coming off the heels of her debut trip to the World Center of Speed, Taylor Ferns has signed a seven-race deal with Venturini Motorsports in the ARCA Series for 2013.

“This is an exciting chapter in my life. I’ve been thinking about the day I would move up to drive in the ARCA Series for a long time, and now that I’m pairing up with the Venturinis’ it gives me a lot of confidence and high expectations going into the season,” says Taylor Ferns.

Representing the millennial generation, Ferns continues her climb up the motorsports ladder in pursuit of her ultimate goal, reaching the ranks of NASCAR.

The highly touted high school junior honor student is considered one of the top female driver prospects in the country and will make her ARCA debut on March 9th at Mobile International Speedway. She’s also slated for short track events at Toledo Speedway, Elko Speedway, Iowa Speedway, DuQuoin and speedway events at Pocono Raceway in August and Kentucky Speedway in September. Events at Iowa, Pocono and Kentucky will be nationally televised on FOX Sports Media Group’s SPEED Channel.

Taylor’s selective ARCA schedule will compliment and coincide with her full-time duties driving midgets and Silver Crown cars in the United States Auto Club (USAC) Series.

With over 10-years of racing experience Taylor is ready to write the next chapter in her already impressive career.

Already the WINNINGEST female driver in the famed USAC Series, Taylor made history at Toledo Speedway claiming her first National USAC MOPAR D1 Regional Midget Championship in 2011.

In 2010, Taylor received USAC’s prestigious KARA HENDRICK SPIRIT AWARD. This award is bestowed annually to the USAC female racer who best displays character, determination and driving ability within the series. Established in 2003, this award honors the memory of one of USAC’s most accomplished female drivers, Kara Hendrick, who tragically lost her life during a USAC Western (California) Midget event in 1991.

As Taylor’s rise to fame in the motorsports world continues she is an active participant in Lyn St. James’ “Women in the Winner’s Circle Foundation”.

Taylor will become one of the youngest teenage drivers in ARCA history to compete at Pocono and Kentucky speedways. During the off-season ARCA announced they’ve lowered the age requirements for drivers competing on race tracks larger than 1-mile from 18 to 17-years old. This does not include Superspeedways such as Daytona or Talladega.

Taylor, representing Mopar and Taylor Ferns Racing is currently preparing this week for her second appearance at the 27th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire at the Tulsa (Okla.) Expo Center.

15 Year Old, Kyle Benjamin Sets Sights on ARCA Series with Venturini Motorsports

Concord, NC (January 8, 2013) — Fifteen-year old racing prodigy Kyle Benjamin from Easley, South Carolina has committed to taking his career to the next level by choosing the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards and Venturini Motorsports as the next step in his driver development process.

Armed with heaps of talent and self-possessed goals of one day becoming a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, Benjamin has signed on with Venturini Motorsports for a partial season deal which will include visits to Mobile International Speedway, Toledo Speedway, Winchester Speedway and a nationally televised race on FOX Sports Media Group’s SPEED Channel in September at Iowa Raceway.

“I’m excited to announce our plans with Venturini Motorsports this upcoming season. They’ve got a great history of success with young drivers and it gives me a great opportunity to gain experience and add more seat time to my 2013 racing schedule,” says, Benjamin.

Despite his seemingly brief career Benjamin has excelled in everything he’s driven helping him showcase his talent and cast a spotlight which is currently shining bright on his budding career.

Benjamin, a first generation driver is no stranger to the racing community. Since the early age of 6 he’s been honing his skills and calculating his career path competing and winning championships in everything from Quarter Midgets, Bandoleros to the Pro and Super Late Model divisions around the Southeast.

During a career trending one break-out season after another, Benjamin once again found himself re-writing the record books by capturing the 2012 ARCA/CRA Super Series Southern Championship becoming the youngest champion in the series’ history.

Already with an impressive racing resume Benjamin’s most recent championship adds to a growing list of accomplishments including the 2009 Pro Challenge Southern Division Champion, 2008 Bandolero Winternationals Champion, 2008 Battle of Bristol Champion, 2008 Speedway Champion at Atlanta Motorspeedway and the 2006 & 2007 South Carolina State Bandolero Championship.

In 2012 Benjamin captured more national headlines by beating out Kyle Larson and scoring three-straight wins during “Speedweeks” at New Smyrna becoming the youngest Super Late Model Champion in the 46-year history of the New Smyrna World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing event.

Adding to his list of notable accomplishments in 2012 Benjamin captured the checkered flag in Indianapolis during the Fatheadz Eyewear 100 at Lucas Oil Raceway securing his place in history as the youngest winner in the ARCA/CRA Super Series.

Benjamin also found himself center stage following the late summer ARCA/CRA Super Series Winchester 400 making a dramatic last lap pass – 100 feet from the stripe on Ross Kenseth to seemingly win the all-star event but was later disqualified for a technical infraction.

Completing his season Benjamin finished seventh in his debut at the 45th annual Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida and scored a third place finish in the preceding Snowflake 100.

Benjamin’s impending Mobile Int’l Speedway debut (March 2013) in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards will make him the youngest driver ever to compete in the series. This record is currently held by VMS driver, Erik Jones, who entered the record books as “ARCA’s youngest competitor” at the very same track during the spring of 2012.

In addition to Benjamin’s 2013 ARCA racing schedule he will concentrate on running selective “big” late model and super late model events which include trips to the RedBud 300, World Crown 300, Winchester 400 and Kyle Busch’s Rowdy 250 at Berlin Raceway.

World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Returns to Arizona for First Time Since 2009

TUCSON, Ariz. – Jan. 8, 2012 – It’s been a long wait for sprint car fans in Arizona.

The last time the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series competed in the Grand Canyon State was March 2009, when Chad Kemenah dominated the feature to claim the final checkered flag at famed Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix.

The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Cars are set to return to Arizona for the Wildcat Shootout on Saturday, March 9, at Tucson International Raceway, which last hosted an STP Sprint Car event in 2007.

“Usually it’s really, really neat because the fans don’t get to see us very often,” Kemenah said. “It’s neat for us because you have a little more even playing field.”

Paul McMahan and reigning series champion Donny Schatz each won a race at Tucson International Raceway in 2006. Steve Kinser, a 20-time World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series champion, earned the victory in March of 2007.

  • Taylor Ferns Set for Second Chili Bowl Appearance

Taylor Ferns Set for Second Chili Bowl Appearance

    By Ferns Racing PR

Shelby Township, Mich.—Jan. 7, 2013 — Taylor Ferns got her first taste of the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals from behind the wheel in 2012, after attending the race three straight years as a spectator, as she waited to be of-age to compete in the famed indoor event. After getting her feet wet in last year’s Chili Bowl, the 17-year-old will return to Tulsa, Okla., again this year to race against over 250 competitors in what has become the biggest midget event of the year, drawing drivers from coast-to-coast and across the world, from a wide array of racing disciples.

Ferns, the 2011 USAC D1 Midget Series champion, will pilot her family-owned No. 55 Dea Eyewear Spike with a Stanton Mopar engine under the hood. She will take to the track for the first of four qualifying nights on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The top-three finishes in each of the preliminary features from the four qualifying nights will transfer directly into the main event on Saturday, Jan. 12. A practice session that Ferns will take part in is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 7.

“The Chili Bowl is one of my favorite events of the year,” said Ferns. “The whole week is centered around racing and is always a great time. I’m really looking forward to getting out to Tulsa and back in the midget and starting the 2013 season.”

Last year in the Chili Bowl, Ferns competed on the first qualifying night. She found herself in the second heat race. The winningest female driver in USAC history lined up seventh in that eight-lap contest and quickly charged to the front, and was running third and about to make a two-car pass for the lead when the first and second-place running drivers got together, leaving her nowhere to go.

Ferns next hit the track during the first of four 10-lap A-Qualifiers, where she finished eighth, which put her in the first of two 15-lap B-mains, where she started eighth. She would get as high as fourth, before finishing fifth, coming up just one spot short of transferring to the preliminary feature on the opening night of the Chili Bowl. On the final day of the 2012 Chili Bowl, Ferns finished fourth in the first E-main to transfer to the first D-main.

“It always helps having experience at a track and in an event, especially one like the Chili Bowl, which is so unique,” she shared. “The Chili Bowl is an experience-based type of race, so knowing how the race format works and how things go will be a big help this year. Hopefully we can have a good second showing at the Chili Bowl.”

The 2012 season saw Ferns race three different types of race cars, as she spent the majority of the season on the dirt in a midget, while also competing with the USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series in three pavement events, as well as making four starts in an asphalt late model with the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour. She finished among the top-10 in her debut in both the Silver Crown car and the late model. Ferns recorded her best-career finish with the USAC National Midget Series last July at Plymouth Speedway in Indiana, coming home tenth, after qualifying third-fastest, which also marked a career-best with the series.

“At the Chili Bowl you have to have a good car, but you also have to have luck on your side,” explained Ferns. “Last year I had a good car and could run where I wanted to on the track. There are always a lot of cars there, but as a driver you try not to really look at that. The main thing is to focus on your race and what you have to do.”

Prior to the holiday season, Ferns tested a stock car with the ARCA Series at the famed Daytona International Speedway in Florida. Driving a Toyota for Venturini Motorsports, she was fastest in two of the sessions over the course of the three-day test, and was near the top of the speed charts in the other four as well. The test at Daytona marked the largest track that Ferns had ever driven on, and also were her first laps on a superspeedway.

“Knowing that the last time I was in a race car I was fast and doing well definitely boosts the confidence going into the Chili Bowl,” said Ferns. “Knock on wood, I’ve had pretty good luck at the Chili Bowl, so hopefully that continues this year. I know that Tracy (Hines) will give me a good car and we’ll be prepared.”

Taylor Ferns and Ferns Racing would like to thank their valued partners: Dea Eyewear, FK Rod Ends, Lucas Oil, K&N Filters, Lansing Sanitary Supply (LSS), Simpson Race Products, Indy Race Parts, ButlerBuilt, Allstar Performance, Stanton Racing Engines, Lyn St. James Women in the Winner’s Circle Foundation, Race4Girls and Racing2Cure.

  • Tracy Hines Seeks Second Chili Bowl Win

Tracy Hines Seeks Second Chili Bowl Win

Tracy-Hines-LogoFive entries from the THR stable set for competition By Tracy Hines Racing PR

New Castle, Ind.—Jan. 7, 2013— The list of past winners of the Chili Bowl Nationals is a “Who’s Who” of the racing world. Of the 17 drivers that have won the Chili Bowl, only five have won it more than once. Tracy Hines, who claimed the Golden Driller trophy in 2005, looks to add his name to that very exclusive list of racers that have multiple Chili Bowl wins as he returns to the famed event this year.

Hines will pilot the No. 24 Parker Machinery/Powered by Toyota Spike in the 27th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire at the Tulsa Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla. The Chili Bowl is set for Jan. 8–12, with the field of well over 250 drivers split into four qualifying groups. A practice session is set for competitors on Monday, Jan. 7, which Hines will take part in. He’ll then return to the track on Tuesday, Jan. 8, for the Vacuworx International Race of Champions, followed by Warren CAT qualifying night.

“The Chili Bowl is an event we look forward to each and every year,” said Hines. “The competition gets tougher every year and you definitely have to be on your game. I’ve been fortunate to have won the Chili Bowl in the past and it would be a great way to start our season with another strong run and to be in contention for the win.”

Last season, the veteran driver opened the Chili Bowl by finishing third in the Vacuworx International Race of Champions, behind five-time Chili Bowl winner Sammy Swindell and Kevin Swindell, who has won each of the last three Chili Bowl main events. The native of New Castle, Ind., took to the track for the third of four qualifying nights, where he finished sixth in the preliminary feature after racing his way through the first C-main and then the first B-main to earn a spot in the preliminary feature. Hines finished third in the first B-main on the final night of the 2012 Chili Bowl to earn a spot in the 50-lap main event. He would finish just outside of the top-10, in the 11th position in the A-Feature.

“Having a solid qualifying night is the first piece of the puzzle and putting yourself in a good position for the final night,” noted Hines. “I’ve raced my way through the alphabet in the past, but if you don’t have to do that, you are in a much better position and can save your equipment. We have a good baseline for the Chili Bowl and should be fast right off the truck.”

Hines has qualified for the main event at the Chili Bowl 12 times in his career. On his way to winning the 2005 Chili Bowl, he also won a preliminary feature. The 2000 USAC Traxxas Silver Crown and 2002 USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series champion has nine career top-10 finishes on the final night of Chili Bowl, with three of those being top-five performances. Along with his win in 2005, he also finished on the podium in 2009, coming home second to Sammy Swindell.

The 2012 season saw Hines compete in a midget with the USAC National Midget Series, scoring four wins and finishing second in overall points. He was victorious twice on the pavement at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, while also picking up wins on the dirt at Dodge City Raceway Park in Kansas and Tri-City Speedway in Illinois. Hines recorded 12 top-10 finishes with the series over the course of the season.

In addition to driving the No. 24 Parker Machinery/Powered by Toyota Spike, Hines will also serve as crew chief for Taylor Ferns, Trey Starks, C.J. Leary and Jonathan Hendrick who are all racing under the THR banner. Ferns, who was the 2011 USAC D1 Midget Series champion, is the winningest female driver in USAC history. Starks is a third-generation driver from Puyallup, Wash., whose father John competed in the Chili Bowl during its formative years. The younger Starks won twice in 2012 in a winged sprint car on the West Coast. Leary, a second-generation driver, who hails from Greenfield, Ind., was the 2012 USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series Rookie of the Year and won his first-career sprint car race with the Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series (BOSS) in 2012 at Lawrenceburg Speedway in his home state of Indiana. Hendrick, a native of Fortville, Ind., was victorious last season at Tri-State (Ind.) Speedway with the Midwest Sprint Car Series, as well as picking up a win at Lawrenceburg.

“It’s going to be a busy week for sure having five cars compete, but with four qualifying nights that spreads things out and makes it a lot more manageable,” shared Hines. “I’ve got a lot of laps in the Chili Bowl and look forward to sharing that experience with the young drivers that we’ll have racing out of the THR stable this week.”

Tracy Hines Racing would like to thank: Parker Machinery, Powered by Toyota, Turbines, Inc., Afco Racing Shocks, Schoenfeld, Stanton Racing Engines, Daum Motorsport, Indiana Underground, Hoosier, Bell and Drivin Racing Oil.

  • “Drivers Start Your Engines” Irwindale Event Center Announces Opening Night and Welcomes NASCAR as the Sanctioning Body

“Drivers Start Your Engines” Irwindale Event Center Announces Opening Night and Welcomes NASCAR as the Sanctioning Body

speedFour of the most recognized words in motorsports will once again be heard throughout one of the Nation’s most recognized racing facilities, after being closed for the entire 2012 season.

A breath of fresh air along with a management team that is dedicated to serving the drivers, as well as the fans are on the top of the priority list when Irwindale Event Center opens its gates for the 2013 racing season on April 6th.

The opening night schedule will include, NASCAR Super Late Models, Late Models, Super Stocks, Mini-Stocks and an evening-ending fun-for-all Demolition Derby. Team 211 Entertainment’s President/CEO Jim Cohan is beginning his tenure at the track with a very strong statement, which will serve as the catalyst and the backbone to a very promising season of racing in 2013 and beyond.

Months and weeks of planning have gone into making sure the right people and the right formula would be utilized to make this a successful venture for everyone involved, including the right attitude to work with both drivers and the fans.

“I absolutely want to hear from the racers and fans. You’ve got a guy at the helm in me, and I am a PEOPLE person first and foremost. To work with me, folks have to leave their egos someplace else,” said Cohan when talking about the planning that has been taken place.

Cohan also added that, “We care and that we appreciate every single one of them, and that the old regime is dead and over. I want excitement in the air not only because racing is back at Irwindale, but also because folks know the group running it CARES about them and considers them family.”

Along with the schedule announcement for the 2013 racing season, Cohan also signed a deal with NASCAR this past week to fully sanction all the divisions that will be racing on the asphalt paved ovals.

“NASCAR is pleased to bring our Home Tracks program back to Irwindale Speedway,” said Duvall, NASCAR’s Senior Director of Business Development.

Duvall also added that, “This facility hasn’t changed physically in any way; it’s the same great race track. What has changed is the management group and spirit of teamwork that Jim Cohan’s people bring to the effort, they’re all top pros, and I’m really looking forward to working with them.”

“We met with Bob Duvall from NASCAR yesterday at our offices in Irwindale,” said Cohan.

Cohan finished with, “He really understands our mission to bring great short track stock car racing back to southern California and he’s very supportive of that goal. Bob made his presentation, answered all of our questions, we signed the sanction agreement, and he got back on a plane and took the papers back to Daytona Beach.”

With NASCAR once again as the sanctioning body, the crowning the state or national champion is a very good possibility. For the drivers along with the fans, racing is back in the Southern California area and it’s great to see the facility finally has a person in charge that cares.

“We plan to give it all we’ve got. Challenges may come and obstacles may get in the way but you and the entire community have my word that my team is totally committed to doing everything in our power to make this the very best it can be,” said a very confident Jim Cohan.

An announcement is forthcoming for meetings with car owners and drivers for each division by Irwindale Competition Director, Mike Atkinson.

Full racing schedule will be announced later on today, and the speedway office is now accepting applications for 2013 NASCAR licenses for drivers and crewmembers.

  • Irwindale Event Center Trying to Bring Short Track Racing Back to Southern California

Irwindale Event Center Trying to Bring Short Track Racing Back to Southern California

issWith the closing of Toyota Speedway at Irwindale this past season, it raised a lot of speculation on how a state of the art facility could go from one of the Nation’s most popular short tracks, to one of the biggest mismanaged fiascos since Ontario Motor Speedway closed its gates in 1980.

It wasn’t long after the track opened, that it became one the most talked about racing facilities from coast to coast, and the excitement the track generated during the early part of its inception was nothing like the disappointment it became in its latter years.

On any given Saturday night, car counts were at all-time high, and the level of competition was some of the best with the fans showing their appreciation by filling the stands week after week.

Irwindale would gain even more National exposure when NASCAR decided in 2003 to hold its annual non-points All-Star Showdown, which brought together both the Camping World East and West series teams to battle for bragging rights on the progressively banked ½ mile speedway.

The race itself was dubbed “The Daytona 500” of short track racing because of the prestige that came with winning this two day racing extravaganza, and the race itself attracted drivers from all over the country including NASCAR’s touring and regional series.

The following year in 2004, the track continued to flex its majesty when Greg Pursley won one of NASCAR’s most prestigious awards. Pursley, who had a full-time job at the track as an instructor at the Performance Race Training School, won the weekly series national championship, an award that had not been accomplished by a California driver in 19 years.

Attendance, as well as car counts began to decline when the drivers and teams begin to voice their opinions on rule changes that were taking place in the middle of the season, along with certain drivers and teams who were being given special treatment.

It became more and more obvious that the vice president and general manager of the track Bob DeFazio, along with competition director Lester Boyer were quickly losing control of the facility when the drivers and fans slowly began to look for other venues to get their racing fix.

During this time, one of the biggest questions surrounding the track was how the track’s CEO Jim Williams could allow the facility to take a turn for the worse, without stepping in and putting a stop to what became obvious throughout the pit area.

More and more things got worse around the track, and during the 2011 season NASCAR sent their officials to find out how the late model division, which happened to be the same division that would crown the national as well as the state champion could allow cars to race without first qualifying.

Defazio knew that in order for either the state or national champion to come from his track, they needed a minimum of 20 cars to start each race, so he allowed both super stocks and the S2 cars to start and park in order to reach the needed car count.

NASCAR approached Defazio and Boyer telling them that all cars had to qualify, in addition to passing tech inspection which included having the same rear spoiler.

All of this embarrassment along with the closing of the track could have been avoided if Defazio would have taken the time to listen and work with all the drivers in all the divisions, instead of playing favorites and trying to monopolize racing to a single track.

Jim Cohan’s Team 211 Entertainment group are on the right path to mending what was broken by a greedy, and unappreciative general manager who only looked out for his own interests while forgetting about the well being of the track.

Cohan knew it would be an uphill battle from day one, and overcoming the challenges ahead could only be achieved by getting the entire racing community involved. “We know that we’re starting out a couple of laps behind,” Cohan said.

“But we also know that we have the support of a great number of former racers, sponsors, and most importantly, our fans who have stood by waiting for this track to come back on line again. We’ll really need everyone’s good will and support, and we’ll be trying very hard to return the favor by running a facility that always puts the customer first.”

Cohan and his management team have been busy working on a schedule as well as formulating a universal rules package with other tracks, in order to accommodate all drivers with the goal of bringing short track racing back to the Southern California area.

With the opening night announcement and full racing schedule only a day away, Cohan secured Los Angeles-based LoanMart as one of the tracks sponsors.

“We met with Colby Estes (LoanMart’s Director of Marketing) two days ago and had an instant rapport,” said Jim Cohan, President of 211 Entertainment Company.

Cohan also added that, “LoanMart told us that they were pleased to be able to associate with Irwindale and that they had been waiting to hear that we were back in the oval track racing business.”

With the pieces slowly but meticulously falling into place, it won’t be long before opening night rolls around and the action and excitement of oval track racing picks up where you left off at the event center, but with a whole different outlook.

Cohan and his 211 Entertainment Company were able to resurrect the 1/8 mile drag strip bringing the Summit Racing Series racing back, along with the street legal program to give teenagers and adults  a safe environment to race their cars on.

From all the hype the track has received since announcing it would bring back oval racing with the upcoming schedule only a day away, and the popularity the drag strip has generated since reopening in 2012. Cohan and company look to be on their way to a very successful and highly energetic racing season in 2013.

MICHAEL WALTRIP RACING AND AF CORSE TEAM UP FOR THE ANNUAL ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA; ADD CLINT BOWYER AS TEAMMATE

AF Waltrip Entry of Michael Waltrip, Rob Kauffman, Clint Bowyer and Rui Aguas to Compete at Daytona Jan 26 & 27.

CORNELIUS, N.C. – Michael Waltrip Racing owners Rob Kauffman and Michael Waltrip announced today they will race in the 51st annual Rolex 24 at Daytona on Jan. 26-27. Joining the pair behind the wheel of the Grand Am version of the Ferrari 458 GT that will test in Daytona this weekend will be NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Clint Bowyer and road racing veteran Rui Aguas.

“The Rolex 24 at Daytona is the pinnacle of sports car racing in America and a world class event with huge historic relevance,” said Kauffman. “We made it to the finish last year in our first attempt. The GT category is large and strong this year, but we are going to give it our best shot. You have to be in it to win it.”

The AF Waltrip entry is a joint project of the Italian championship sports car team AF Corse and MWR. AF Waltrip fielded Ferraris for Waltrip and Kauffman at sports car races around the globe since 2010 including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Sebring and last year’s Rolex 24 in Daytona.

Waltrip, a two-time Daytona 500 champion, said the Rolex 24 should be on every race fan’s bucket list.

“Daytona is always special whether it’s the 24 Hours or the Daytona 500,” he said. “Last year was my first year in the Rolex 24 and it was so cool. The road course is awesome. During the day you can see families walking around the infield taking in all the sights and at night the place comes alive when the Ferris Wheel and all the race cars light up. The drivers are having fun and the fans are having fun.”

Bowyer will be the newest member of the AF Waltrip driver lineup that has included Travis Pastrana and Brian Vickers in previous races.

“I’m not really sure what I got myself into,” laughed Bowyer who won three races and finished second in the 2012 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup driving for MWR. “Rob asked me to race and I said I would do it. Everyone has told me how much fun this race is. So, I’m ready. Running 24 hours is a long time, but we will give it our best shot.”

Kauffman partnered with Waltrip in October 2007. MWR fields Toyota Camrys in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from its 140,000-square-foot shop in Cornelius, N.C., for Waltrip, Mark Martin, Vickers, Bowyer and Martin Truex Jr.

MWR’s participation in international racing events is part of a worldwide business strategy and a way to promote the team on a global stage. MWR’s international effort has included visits to Le Mans, the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England, Toyota Motorsports Festival in Japan as well as appearances in Dubai, Bahrain, Shanghai, Spa, and Road Atlanta among others. The AF Waltrip team finished 22nd in the GT Class in the 2012 Rolex 24.

The famous twice-around-the-clock challenge kicks off the international motorsports calendar, as well as the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and features a star-studded line-up of drivers from around the world battling on Daytona’s demanding high-banked road course.
