  • Three Races for Tracy Hines in Three Nights at Terre Haute & I-96

Three Races for Tracy Hines in Three Nights at Terre Haute & I-96

New Castle, Ind.—Oct. 11, 2012— Once the calendar reaches October, races in the Midwest are usually few and far between for short track open wheel drivers. That’s not the case this year as a handful of events still remain over the next two weekends. For Tracy Hines, first up is a trio of USAC races this weekend in Indiana and Michigan over a three-day stretch.

Hines opens the weekend with the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series on Friday, Oct. 12, with the running of the rescheduled Jim Hurtubise Classic at the Terre Haute Action track. The event was postponed by rain back in August. Also on the docket at Terre Haute will be the Sumar Classic on Saturday, Oct. 13, for the USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series, a race that was also rained out in August. Hines will then head north to I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich., on Sunday, Oct. 13, for yet another race that was postponed by rained earlier in the year.

“It’s going to be a busy weekend for sure,” said Hines. “Anytime we can race three times in a weekend is great. It’s always a challenge when we race a couple of different cars in the same weekend, but we’re up to it and look to turn in three good showings. Having just one race each night allows you to focus a little more on each of the cars during that particular night.”

The 2002 USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series champion has made two starts this season at Terre Haute in his MP Environmental DRC, finishing on the podium during Indiana Sprint Week, with a third-place showing. In his first start of the season at the legendary half-mile, Hines finished 12th in the Tony Hulman Classic. The native of New Castle, Ind., has three career USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series wins at Terre Haute, with those coming in 1999, 2001 and 2003.

“We’ve been fast in the sprint car on the bigger tracks all season,” he noted. “With the cooler temperatures this weekend, we’ll be churning out a lot of horsepower for sure. We were close during Sprint Week at Terre Haute. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve won a USAC race there, and it would be great to return to Victory Lane at that historic track this weekend.”

The Sumar Classic 100 will serve as the season finale of the USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series. Hines made his last start in a Silver Crown car at Terre Haute in 2010. He enters the event this week seventh in series points, having earned four Top-10 finishes thus far in 2012. The 2000 USAC Traxxas Silver Crown Series champion finished sixth in his most recent start with the series at Eldora Speedway in Ohio during the 4-Crown Nationals, piloting the Lightfoot Racing No. 16.

“The Silver Crown car was pretty good at Eldora last month, so hopefully we can carry that momentum into the race at Terre Haute this weekend,” stated Hines. “We have a chance to move up a few more spots in points and we definitely want to end the Silver Crown season on a strong note. We’ll do our best to turn in a good qualifying effort and try to start at the front in the main event.”

Hines will be making his first start in a sprint car at I-96 Speedway this weekend. He raced earlier this season in Michigan at Hartford Motor Speedway, finishing sixth on that sprawling half-mile. Hines enters the weekend fourth on the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series all-time win list with 43, just two shy of third-place Larry Dickson.

“We raced earlier this season in Michigan on a big track and I-96 should be similar from what I hear,” he noted. “It will be good to go from a half-mile at Terre Haute to the half-mile at I-96. If you find something that really works one night, you’ll probably be able to use that the next night and have a good baseline and some momentum.”

Hines is currently fourth in the USAC Amsoil National Sprint Car Series standings on the strength of two wins and 18 Top-10 finishes, of which 10 have been Top-Five performances. Including this weekend, six nights of racing remain for the series.

Tracy Hines Racing would like to thank: MP Environmental, Parker Machinery, FatHeadz, Turbines, Inc., Support Esophagus Cancer DRC, Shaver Specialties, AFCO Racing Shocks, Bell Race Gear, Kenny’s Components, Race Bumpers, Rod End Supply, Schoenfeld Headers and Stanton Racing for their continued support.

  • Brandon Watson wins Autumn Colors Classic Feature and OSCAAR Super Late Model Championship

Brandon Watson wins Autumn Colors Classic Feature and OSCAAR Super Late Model Championship

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit]Continuing the success of his young racing career, Brandon Watson would win the 20thAnnual Autumn Colors Classic 50-lap OSCAAR Super Late Model feature and be crowned the 2012 series champion. The 20-year-old from Stayner, Ontario becomes the youngest series champion.

As part of OSCAAR tradition, last year’s champion Glenn Watson would hand the championship trophy to his nephew in victory lane.

Also, Jesse Kennedy was officially named 2012 Inside Track Rookie of the Year.

Getting to the action from this past weekend, in the first heat, J.R. Fitzpatrick would take the win driving Roy Passer’s late model. Derrike Tiemersma would finish second, followed by Corey Furkey, Rob Clarke, Owen Smith, Mike Bricknell and Chris Burrows. On the last lap, Jeff Dunford went for the spin.

In the second heat, Jesse Kennedy would turn Shawn McGlynn in turn three. Brandon Watson would take the victory, ahead of George Wilson, Dave Taylor, Tyler Hawn and Keith King.

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignleft” width=”266″][/media-credit]In the third heat, Rob Poole would take the win ahead of Charlie Gallant, Glenn Watson, Rudy Oppersma and Todd Campbell.

In the fourth heat, Clarke would spin on lap four. Owen Smith would take the win ahead of Tiemersma, Furkey, Fitzpatrick, Clarke, Burrows and Bricknell.

In the fifth heat, McGlynn would get spun around on lap two by King. George Wilson would get the win ahead of Brandon Watson, Taylor, McGlynn, Kennedy, Hawn and King.

The sixth and final heat would go to Charlie Gallant ahead of Poole, Glenn Watson, Oppersma, Campbell, Gary Passer and Quinn Misener.

Following the qualifying heats and the draw in the pits, it’d be Rookie Rob Poole starting on pole, with 2012 OSCAAR Super Late Model Champion Brandon Watson starting second. Veteran Derrike Tiemersma would start third, followed by George Wilson, J.R. Fitzpatrick, Charlie Gallant and Glenn Watson.

On the drop of the green flag, Brandon Watson would grab the lead with Wilson second, bumping Poole back to third ahead while Tiemersma and Fitzpatrick battled for fourth. Fitzpatrick would clear Tiemersma on lap three, with Glenn Watson passing Tiemersma for fifth on lap five.

The top five would run single file all the way till the first caution at lap 18 for Keith King slowing in turns one and two. Under caution, Rob Poole would come down pit road and be done for the race with a broken clutch. So with 32 laps to go, it’d be Brandon Watson leading Wilson, Fitzpatrick, Glenn Watson, Gallant, Owen Smith, Rob Clarke and Tiemersma.

On the restart, there’d be another caution as Brandon Watson would run into problems while Dave Taylor spun on the front stretch virtue of Corey Furkey. Brandon Watson would make his way down pit road, work on the car and restart at the back of the field. Fitzpatrick would also make a pit stop under caution. Meanwhile, Chris Burrows would be done for the race. So now it’d be Wilson leading Glenn Watson, Gallant, Smith, Clarke and Tiemersma.

They’d get one lap in, but then the third caution would fly when Wilson was spun by Glenn Watson while battling for the lead. Behind them, Todd Campbell also spun while Gallant, Taylor and Jesse Kennedy were also involved. Under caution, King, Rudy Oppersma and Tyler Hawn would make their way down pit road. Now with 31 laps to go, it’d be Gallant leading Smith, Clarke, Tiemersma, Taylor, Campbell, Jeff Dunford, Fitzpatrick, Kyle Passer and Brandon Watson.

On the restart, Gallant would hold the lead while Smith and Clarke battled for second. Clarke would get by Smith and then challenge Gallant for

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit]the lead. There would be contact between Clarke and Gallant, resulting in a wreck which brought out the fifth caution of the 50 lap feature. Smith and Tiemersma would also be collected in the wreck. However, because Tiemersma was involved after the instant of the caution being thrown, Tiemersma would keep his position as the race leader. So with 30 laps to go, it’d be Tiemersma leading Dunford, Taylor, Passer, Brandon Watson, Glenn Watson, Campbell, Furkey, Wilson, Oppersma and Shawn McGlynn.

On the restart, Tiemersma would keep the lead ahead of Dunford while Brandon Watson continued his climb back up through the field, getting side-by-side with Taylor for third. Brandon Watson would clear Taylor on lap 24, leaving Taylor to battle with Campbell for fourth. However, Campbell would clear Taylor for fifth on lap 25, and then both Wilson and Glenn Watson would pass Taylor to bump him back to seventh.

On lap 28, Wilson would pass Campbell for fourth. Brandon Watson would pass Dunford for second on lap 30 just before the sixth caution flew for Oppersma spinning in turn four in his own fluid. So with 20 laps to go, it’d be Tiemersma leading Brandon Watson, Dunford, Wilson, Campbell, Glenn Watson, Taylor and Furkey.

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignleft” width=”266″][/media-credit]On the restart, it’d be Tiemesma and Brandon Watson side-by-side for the lead, with Tiemersma keeping Brandon Watson at bay. On lap 33 under green, Fitzpatrick would pit and be done for the race due to an issue in the rear end.

The seventh caution would fly on lap 35 when Quinn Misner spun on the backstretch, collecting Gallant, King and Kennedy. Due to the race being over its time limit, caution laps would now be counted.

The restart would come on lap 38 with Tiemersma holding serve over Brandon Watson, Wilson, Glenn Watson and Jeff Dunford. On lap 40, Tiemersma and Brandon Watson would get side-by-side for the lead. However, the eighth caution would fly the same lap as Shawn McGlynn got wrecked by Kennedy. So with 10 laps to go, it’d be Tiemersma leading Brandon Watson, Wilson, Glenn Watson, Dunford, Campbell, Furkey and Clarke.

The restart would come on lap 46, with Brandon Watson and Wilson both getting by Tiemersma for first and second. The ninth caution would then fly as Smith would stop in the grass. He spun into the grass on the previous lap after contact from Clarke.

On the restart, Glenn Watson would run into trouble and then the caution would fly the next lap as Clarke would wreck in turn four, collecting Taylor. Under caution, Glenn Watson made his way down pit road.

The race would go green with one lap to go and Brandon Watson would lead that lap to take the win. George Wilson finished second, followed by Derrike Tiemersma, Jeff Dunford and Gary Passer. The full results and unofficial standings are posted below.

The first caution would come out at lap six for Tim Burke spinning in turn two. Phil Bullen would make his way down pit road.

On the restart, it’d be Gary McLean in front of Brian McLean again while Strawn and Brent McLean battled for third. They’d battle till the caution for Demelo stalling on track due to a flat tire due to contact with Strawn. He would be spend multiple laps on pit road fixing the damage.

The restart would go clean, though the third caution would quickly fly on lap 10 for Matt Barton getting into Brandon Crumbie, collecting David McCullough. McCullough and Crumbie would get done for the race as a result of the damage, while Barton would get a blackflag for rough driving.

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit]On the restart, Gary McLean would once again lead ahead of Brian McLean, now with Brent McLean third followed by Strawn and Justin Jones. Brent McLean would then pass Brian McLean for second on lap 16.

  • Berry Brings JR Motorsport First Track Title, Now Shooting For First Martinsville win

Berry Brings JR Motorsport First Track Title, Now Shooting For First Martinsville win

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (October 9, 2012) – Don’t try to tell Josh Berry that video games are a waste of time.

After meeting NASCAR superstar and Late Model Stock car owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. on iRacing in 2009, Berry got to the know Earnhardt after the two started chatting online after races. That evolved into a phone conversation that eventually led to a tryout for Berry in a JR Motorsports-owned Late Model Stock car.

Berry will be running the JR Motorsports car at Martinsville Speedway in a couple of weeks when he attempts to make the field for the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300.

“Dale Jr. and I became friends through iRacing and he let me test the car and I must have done pretty good because I got the ride,” Berry added. “I was able to use iRacing as a way to connect and I think you might see more and more of that down the road.”

Berry enjoyed a solid campaign at Motor Mile Speedway this season and his performance – one win, 15 top fives and 17 top 10s – was good enough to earn Berry the 2012 Motor Mile Speedway track championship and also give JR Motorsports its first championship at any level of NASCAR racing.

Earnhardt was impressed with his team’s performance at Motor Mile.

“I think it’s been a great experience for Josh. It’s been fun to watch. That’s why we have the late model team, is to have people have these experiences and enjoy it, see them kind of grow, become better racecar drivers, people with possibilities and opportunities,” said Earnhardt. “It’s been fun in that regard. I’m glad that I’ve spent 15 years putting late models on the racetrack. Finally win a championship, that’s not been the ultimate goal for us. We try to just kind of tutor people along. But winning races and winning a track championship is definitely icing on the cake. “

Berry hopes his success this season leads to a solid showing in the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 at Martinsville Speedway on October 21.

“When we went to Martinsville last fall (for the Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 300 Late Model classic) that whole experience seemed to make our program better,” said Berry.

Berry qualified ninth fastest in a field of 79 entries for that Martinsville event. He was running in the top 10 before being sidelined by an accident and relegated to a 40th-place finish.

“We didn’t start out this year with the goal of winning the Motor Mile championship, but it was in the back of my mind,” Berry said. “By the third race of the season we were the front runners. When we won the fourth race of the season, that’s when we knew we had to pursue the championship.”

Earnhardt also echoes Berry’s thoughts entering Martinsville.

“I think Josh will do a good job in Martinsville,” said Earnhardt. “He’s had a good car down there the last couple times he’s been and enjoyed the experience. I think he’s learned from it in the past and can go in there with a better mindset and hopefully give himself a better opportunity at trying to win the race.”

Berry placed fifth in the 2012 state NASCAR point race and ranks 19th in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series’ national top 500. Virginia tracks hosted three of the top 10 drivers in the national standings including Lee Pulliam, the series’ national champion.

Berry began racing at age nine in WKA and TKA karting and won numerous races and championships around Tennessee through 2002. He moved into stock-car racing in the four-cylinder Frontrunner division at Music City Motorplex in Nashville, TN, and won the division championship on the paved quarter-mile in 2004. His next move was to Legends cars, winning the Semi-Pro division championship in his rookie year of 2007. He continued to race Legends in Nashville through 2009, before moving to Mooresville to join JR Motorsports in 2010.

There are two big weekends of action coming up at Martinsville Speedway: the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 on October 21 and the TUMS Fast Relief 500 weekend Oct. 26-28. Tickets for all of the fall events are on sale and may be purchased by calling 1.877.RACE.TIX or by visiting www.martinsvillespeedway.com online.

  • The Speedwaymedia.com 1.5 mile fall challenge: Baldwin and Bradley qualify

The Speedwaymedia.com 1.5 mile fall challenge: Baldwin and Bradley qualify

Drivers competed in three qualifying events at Anarchy Motorsports Server (AMS) in order to be eligible to win a cash bonus. The Speedwaymedia.com 1.5 mile fall challenge began on August 30th at Texas Motor Speedway and will end on Thursday October 11th at Charlotte Motor Speedway with two drivers eligible.

The challenge consisted of just winning one of qualifying events to be eligible. Dalton Baldwin, who won at Texas and Las Vegas and Matthew Bradley, who won at Atlanta, are both eligible for the cash bonus.

Baldwin, a veteran at AMS has captured several championships since joining in early 2008.

“I won my first cup series championship in our 2010A season. In the 2010B season, I won both the Cup Series and Nationwide Series championships.”

The first qualifying race was at Texas Motor Speedway on August 30th and it went all Baldwin’s way. Baldwin made a statement by starting from the pole and then dominating the entire race by leading 104 of the 125 laps while lapping the entire field.

Baldwin continued on in the second qualifying race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on September 13th. Baldwin started eighth but struggled with adjustments all race long but still led 94 of the 125 laps and held off Bradley to win the second qualifier.

“At Texas, I just really figured out the setup and had it down. But at Vegas it wasn’t the same story. I just couldn’t get the car to respond to adjustments how I wanted it to. I had a decent and comfortable setup and I put it in and drove it as hard as I could. Matthew Bradley and I had an awesome battle for the lead for a long time during that race. He definitely had a faster car than I did, but he got messed up by a late caution during green flag pit stops.”

The third and final qualifying race was at Atlanta Motor Speedway on September 27th. Baldwin started from the pole and led 70 laps while Bradley, who started fourth, led 30 laps before taking the checkered flag and won the final qualifying race.

“I won the final qualifying race so I knew it was my last shot. I worked on my setup for about 15 hours during the previous two weeks until I got it to a point where I was very confident on a full fuel run. This is much longer than I would normally spend on a setup. When it got to the race I quickly realized that I had the fastest car but I was most worried about getting into trouble on a restart. However, I went too fast on pit road trying to race Dalton out of pit road and then I got involved in a wreck shortly after the restart. I was two laps down after repairs and passed the entire field twice to get back on the lead lap and eventually to the lead. So it was a very tough race.” Bradley said.

Charlotte was going to be a great battle between Baldwin and Bradley for the bonus. But unfortunately, Baldwin is also a NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour driver and will have to race in the rescheduled race also being run on October 11th.

“Unfortunately, the Whelen Southern Modified Tour race at Charlotte is the Thursday night of our SpeedwayMedia.com 188 at Charlotte. So, unless the modified race was rained out or something, there’s no way I could make it. It sucks, because I really like Charlotte on iRacing, it’s an awesome track, and I was looking forward to racing for the promo money.”

Be sure to tune in on October 11th to see if Baldwin make it or if Bradley can win it for himself at Charlotte.

If you are looking for an iRacing league to join, check out AMS.

“I love this league. It’s an awesome league with great guys. I’ve never been apart of something that’s so competitive, yet so much fun, and everyone gets along so well. I would suggest that anyone looking for a league to join on iRacing to seriously consider us.” Baldwin said.

“I’d like to thank all the admin at Anarchy Motorsports for running such a fair, friendly and welcoming league. I’d also like to thank them for working tirelessly to get sponsors for races and to arrange incentives for winners. I’ve been involved in several leagues before but this is the best organized and most enjoyable league I’ve been involved in.” Bradley added.

  • Steve Kinser Notches Win 574 At Rolling Wheels Raceway

Steve Kinser Notches Win 574 At Rolling Wheels Raceway

[media-credit name=”Dan Kapuscinski/Rolling Wheels Raceway Park” align=”alignright” width=”198″][/media-credit]Cold and damp. Those are the best descriptions for Rolling Wheels Raceway Saturday night. But cold has never been a deterrent for the Outlaws or their fans. Cold or not when the gates opened at 5PM New York time the crowds began to pour in. With hot laps on the track and not many empty seats seen there was still a line of traffic to get onto the raceway’s grounds. The grandstands were packed. The track was packed and the drivers were rested and ready after almost a week off. It was time to race. And nothing would warm the crowd and the drivers like the mighty wings of the Outlaws on the track.

The evening saw a 28 car field for the 5/8 mile semi banked dirt clay oval track in Elbridge, N.Y.. Qualifying draw would spread the touring Outlaws throughout the order with Sammy Swindell going out last. The track record of 15.952 seconds was set 8 years ago by Craig Dollansky. Though the field would get no where near that record tonight, it was still a very fast field with Quick Time going to Daryn Pittman with a lap of 17.027 seconds or 132.143 mph. Dollansky would time 2nd and Schatz would time 3rd. Allowing Dollansky to pick up a point on Schatz in the very beginning of the night. The remainder of the top 5 were Joey Saldana and local driver Shawn Donath.

The first heat of the night would set the tone for the evening. A fast paced no holds barred 8 lap shootout that saw a return of The King, Steve Kinser to the Dash. The race would be won by Kerry Madsen, with Kinser coming home second, Saldana third, Quick Time holder Daryn Pittman in 4th and Justin Barger in 5th and an old friend from the Canada Glenn Styres rounding out the transferring cars. Not making the cut would be last years rookie of the year Cody Darrah. Darrah who had a uncharacteristically bad evening would struggle all evening.

The second heat would see ASCOC Champion, David Gravel take the checkers over Lucas Wolfe, Shawn Donath, Sammy Swindell, Craig Dollansky and Bill Rose. Sammy Swindell would literally hold class for the young drivers in the field when he climbed from 8th to 4th in a single lap. Although Swindell could advance no further, he gave notice that a poor qualifying lap was not going to hold the Big Game Tree Stands number 1 back. He served notice in a very convincing manner that he was there to win, and starting from the back only meant he would have to work a little harder at it.

The third heat would qualify the final 6 into the A Main. Chad Kemenah, Kraig Kinser, Donny Schatz, Paul McMahan, Jessica Zemken, and Jamie Collard would all advance into the feature. Kemenah, Kinser and Schatz would advance to the Dash.

The Dash was a hard fought battle between the top 4 cars. But it offered a glimpse of what was to come later in the evening with the A Main. The dash was won by Chad Kemenah with Steve Kinser coming home second, Donny Schatz third and Kerry Madsen 4th. There was a bit of foreboding there when Dollansky crossed the stripe in 7th after having Magneto trouble in both the dash and his heat race. Was Dollansky snake bit? Only time would tell.

The Last Chance Showdown would transfer the final 6 cars into the A Main. Looking at the line up one would be tempted to pick Cody Darrah from the outside front row as a sure thing. But making that choice would have been a mistake. Long time modified champ Frank Cozze was starting on the pole. Cozze had won his first Sprint Car race earlier in the year in upstate New York. Frank was determined to make a run for his second tonight. Cozze jumped out into the lead on lap one and never looked backed winning the last chance showdown by a 1.8 second margin over Cody Darrah, Bobby Breen, Joe Smith, Daniel Mazy and Mike Stelter.

The field for the A Main was set and even with the deep chill in the air the anticipation was palpable. Steve Kinser had the most wins of any driver at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park having won 11 out of 34 races could he send the monkey on his back, packing back to the zoo and win number 12? Donny Schatz was lurking back in the third spot, Schatz had been on a terror for 12 weeks, would he take win number 12 on the season? Madsen had run hard all night and was showing the same kind of patience and skills that had made him a contender and winner all season, would he make it number 6 on the year? And far from least sitting back in 21st starting spot was the crafty veteran and 4 time champion Sammy Swindell. Swindell had already shown he could move up very quickly through a field would he find a way to the front tonight?

The 25 lap feature was a hard fought and determined race. Chad Kemenah lead 16 laps and at one time had pulled away from 2nd place Steve Kinser by almost 3 seconds. But then came the traffic, and no one works traffic better than the King of the Outlaws and on lap 17 Steve Kinser took the lead and worked the traffic like a maestro conducting the 5th symphony of Beethoven. Where ever he found them he passed them pulling out to a straight a way lead on Kemenah and Schatz in less than a lap. His teammate Donny Schatz wasn’t done yet and he split lapped traffic on the bottom to take second from Kemenah with 4 laps to go. But the King was long gone. Schatz could close but he was too far back to catch Steve Kinser. Afterward, Schatz would be asked if he had had more time could he have caught him? Schatz replied, “No way he was hooked up. We finished 2nd. We came to win but we finished 2nd.” Chad Kemenah would come home 3rd. And in post race comments said that he had no regrets. Oh and that crafty veteran Sammy Swindell he would be the Hard Charger of the race climbing from 21st to 8th.

There was not a single position that was not hard fought for on the track in the A Main. Every driver, every team ran hard and showed the skills and guts that it takes to take on the might wings of the Outlaws. The winner on the night? Well Steve Kinser took home the trophy and the check and he notched win number 574 for his career. But the real winners were the fans in the stands and at home following with help from Johnny Gibson and the WoO team. The World of Outlaws raced hard. They raced wide open. They took chances. They didn’t points race not even Schatz and Dollansky points raced. They raced for the checkers. They reminded us what the real point of the sport is. To cross the line first. If you cross the line first enough times you come home with the most points at the end and you take home the big prize. But you do that with the grace, courage, skills and determination of a champion.

Oh yeah the points race. Donny Schatz increased his point lead over Craig Dollansky by 9 points going into the final 4 races of the year. That means he has a 168 point lead over Dollansky. Is it insurmountable? No. But Schatz would have to miss at least 2 features for Dollansky to get the championship if Dollansky won both of them. Mathematically it’s possible but it is not very probable. Still however, things happen fast and stranger things have happened. So we go into the next race saying Schatz is close to sealing the championship but he doesn’t have it yet. Will Dollansky find a way? Will Schatz stumble and fall? Will lady luck remain true to her chosen champion thus far Schatz? Or will she jump ship and give Dollansky a hand up to the deck? We have 4 more races to find out.

  • New Format Looks Like A Big Hit For The Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 300

New Format Looks Like A Big Hit For The Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 300

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (October 3, 2012) – Any concerns about the new format for the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 at Martinsville Speedway on October 21 were dashed during Wednesday’s practice session for the prestigious NASCAR Late Model Stock car race.

More than 85 teams showed up for the practice day, countering the notion the new all-heat race formula to set the field would keep them away.

At the end of the day, some familiar names were at the top of speed charts, with a few fresh faces mixed in.

Former Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 winner and four-time national champion Philip Morris had the fastest speeds of the day, topping the chart at 92.493 mph (20.473 seconds). Kris Bowen and Jeff Oakley weren’t far behind him at 92.420 mph and 92.411 mph respectively around the .526-mile oval.

Mike Looney of Roanoke was fourth fastest in a Chevrolet, followed by former national champion Peyton Sellers, also in a Chevrolet.

Despite sitting atop the speed chart, Morris wasn’t totally happy with his car.

“It was an up and down day … that’s the way it always is here at Martinsville,” said Morris, who is from Ruckersville. “You make big swings and sometimes you go the wrong way and sometimes you go the right way. By the end of the day today, I felt like we had pretty good balance in the car, though.”

Lee Pulliam, the defending Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 champion who recently captured the NASCAR Whelen All-American national championship, ran among the leaders all day, but thinks he has to find a little more speed before the race on October 21.

“We tried a lot of different things, different combinations,” said Pulliam, who won 22 out of the 36 races he started this season. “But I think we found a happy balance for the race car. There was a lot of experimenting going on today to figure out where we need to be when we come back. I think we have a good idea, but we still have a little more work to do before we come back.”

For the first time the starting lineup will be determined solely from heat races. There will be four heat races on October 21, with the top eight finishers in each race advancing to the 150-lap feature. For the first time, the remaining 10 spots in the 42 car field will be filled through a 50-lap last-chance race, open to any cars which aren’t already in the field.

“I think it’s going to make for some exciting racing for the fans,” Pulliam said of the new format. “I think sometimes you need change to re-energize things. It’s the same for all of us. We just have to adapt to conquer it. However it is, it’s Martinsville. It’s still just as cool to win. It’s the most fun place we run.”

There are two big weekends of action coming up at Martinsville Speedway, the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 on October 21 and the TUMS Fast Relief 500 weekend Oct. 26-28. Tickets for all of the fall events are on sale and may be purchased by calling 1.877.RACE.TIX or by visiting www.martinsvillespeedway.com online.

ARCA Announces 2013 Event at Road America

TOLEDO, Ohio – October 3, 2012) – The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards will make its first appearance at Road America in Wisconsin next summer, ARCA officials announced today.

This morning, ARCA received from the track a sanctioning agreement that ensures the scheduling of the stock car series’ first event at the 14-turn, 4.048-mile road course between Milwaukee and Green Bay on Saturday, June 22, 2013.

“ARCA Racing Series road course events have proven to be highly entertaining and competitive, while also opening our level of competition to different racers and teams,” said Ron Drager, president and CEO of ARCA. “Planning an event at Road America ensures that ARCA will continue its position as the most versatile sanction in stock car racing. We look forward to adding Road America to our road course history. Likewise, we will soon announce the date for our sixth consecutive annual event at New Jersey Motorsports Park, which will give us multiple road course races in the 2013 season.”

Opened on over 640 acres of Wisconsin farmland in 1955, Road America hosts over 400 events each year. The track, located near the popular tourist destination of Elkhart Lake, Wis., will be the 10th different road course to host the ARCA Racing Series since the series’ first road race in 1958.

“We are very excited to have the ARCA Racing Series at Road America in 2013,” said Road America president and general manager George Bruggenthies. “Our track is fast and challenging, with sweeping corners followed by heavy braking. Every driver loves the elevation changes and the layout, which has remained unchanged since it was first built. You’ve got to have finesse to be quick, but also guts to get through the Carousel and the Kink – one of the most intimidating corners in the world. We are also excited to be providing non-stop racing action throughout the weekend with the NASCAR Nationwide Series and Trans-Am Series. It will be awesome to watch all these racers and experience all the sights, sounds, and thrills that stock car racing brings to a road course.”

Recently, the ARCA Racing Series announced its renewal of a partnership at Mobile International Speedway in Alabama for a Saturday, March 9 event. Additional race dates for the 2013 season will be released shortly.

  • Josh Gruntz Looks For An Open Wheeled Modified Win At Autumn Colours

Josh Gruntz Looks For An Open Wheeled Modified Win At Autumn Colours

[media-credit name=”Jim Clarke” align=”alignright” width=”400″][/media-credit]By Jim Clarke, Clarke Motorsports Communications – You can take the boy out of Peterborough, but it’s hard to take the ‘Peterborough’ out of the boy.  With the biggest racing event of the year – the 20th Annual Autumn Colours Classic, presented by Lucas Oil Products at Peterborough Speedway – just days away, Josh Gruntz thinks it would be the perfect time to score the first open wheeled modified feature race win of his freshman season.

“I used to watch this race as a kid, but even though it’s my home town and the track is about 15 minutes from my house, I’d never raced there before this year,” said Gruntz.  “It’s a tight little bullring and you really need to be on your toes.  So much can happen in a hurry and when you’re running the modified in a close pack, you can easily get caught-up in someone else’s problem.”

The 30 year-old pipefitter’s rookie campaign in the new division has been split between the Techtonix Series, based atCanadianTireMotorsportParkand OSCAAR’s inaugural open wheeled touring shows.  Events at the former Mosport oval helped Gruntz build his confidence and accumulate some solid set-up notes, while the road trips gave him laps at different tracks he’d heard about, but had never seen throughout the year.  The driver says running with both groups wasn’t an easy choice to make, but was the best option for his development as a racer looking to gain experience with a new car.

“There was so much that I needed to learn.  Getting experience, whenever and wherever I could was my primary goal,” said the driver of the #31 Maple Key Landscape/SB Cleaning Service/Ultimate Car Care machine.  “About halfway though the season, I really started to feel comfortable in the car and managed to pick-up a qualifying event win at Peterborough Speedway Sunday, August 19th with the OSCAAR modified tour.”

The equipment Josh Gruntz will take into battle during the 3 day, late season extravaganza is a proven piece on the 1/3rd mile oval.  At the end of last year, after 2 years running a Thunder Car at Kawartha, Gruntz purchased the machine that Tyler Hendricks steered to victory lane during the 2011 edition of the Autumn Colours Classic.

Peterborough Speedway owner/promoter J.P. Josiasse says that the pit area at the track will be open Thursday night (October 4th) for any teams interested in claiming a weekend spot.  Pit gates open all 3 days at 10:00.  Friday, October 5th, practice rounds start at 1:00 and racing at 6:00.  Saturday, October 6th, practice begins at 1:00 and racing at 3:30.  Sunday, October 7th is a full day of feature race action beginning at 12:30.
