Canadian Motorsports Expo Returns For Sixth Year

[media-credit name=”CME” align=”alignleft” width=”185″][/media-credit]The Canadian Motorsports Expo (CME) is back for another year as it will hit the International Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from February 10th to February 12th.

“Over the years, the CME has been successful because it’s the country’s only pure, homegrown celebration of Canadian motorsports,” Inside Track Magazine Editor Greg MacPherson said. “It’s where the racing industry comes together to kick off ‘our’ racing season. We’re all extremely excited about the new February date and the move to the bigger Hall 6. And we’re looking forward to working with the entire Canadian racing community to make the 2012 CME the best ever.”

As in previous five years, the CME will showcase the best products offered to the motorsports lover, along with showcasing some of the cars that will be hitting the tracks in 2012. It also marks the official spot where the 2012 track schedules are announced so fans can begin planning their summer.

Along with the exhibits and cars, there will be seminars hosted by industry experts to therefore help drivers and teams with being ready for the 2012 season to make the best of it.

The CME also tries to bring in special guests for autographs. Last year guests included Steve Arpin, Ron Fellows, Brad Keselowski and Max Papis. This year’s line-up has yet to be announced, however will be announced in the next couple of short weeks.

As with years past, on Friday, Spencer Lewis will officially announce the final Ontario Short Track Rankings, naming the 10 best drivers in Ontario for 2011. Throughout the year, Spencer has done it in quarters, naming the top 10 drivers in certain sections of the year based on their performance.

On Saturday night, the CME will once again play host to the official announcement of the Inside Track Readers’ Choice Awards, which celebrate the best accomplishments by Canadians in 2011 at a national and international level.

On Sunday, CME staff announced that they will be hosting a CASCAR Reunion. The Canadian Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (CASCAR) was founded in 1981 and ran under that banner till 2007 when it became the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

“We are very excited to be hosting the CASCAR Reunion on Sunday, February 12 at the CME,” MacPherson said. “The series laid the groundwork for NASCAR coming to Canada, proving that the country and its racers would support a unified, professional stock car series. Tony Novotny and some of his early partners had a vision, and while it was never easy, he and the racers, their families, the sponsors and fans worked together to create something pretty special. We’re looking forward to having Tony joined on stage by some past CASCAR champions and other CASCAR personalities for a trip down memory lane.”

One of the people on-hand for the reunion will be Tony Novotny, who originally founded the CASCAR series.

“It’s going to be pretty neat to see a bunch of good friends and talk about the old days,” Novotny said. “There should be a lot of fun stories. It was a lot of work and we had our ups and downs. But looking back, we put on some good racing and ran into a lot of good people over the years. It’ll be nice to see everyone again.”

The event will be held at the International Centre which is located at 6900 Airport Road in Mississauga, Ontario.

Fans can find out more information about the event, including prices and the full schedule, via the event website, http://www.canadianmotorsportsexpo.com

Beauchamp Motorsports announced that for the 2012 season, he will be bringing in new crew chief Deon Deneau to be in charge of the No. 60 Mopar Parts/Mobil 1/Exide Batteries Dodge.

“I’ve know Deon for years,” Ron Beauchamp Jr. said. “He’s worked with Butch Miller in ASA, was ASA Crew Chief of the year in 2007, he’s got a lot of other experience and after we met to discuss the opportunity the decision was an easy one.”

The decision was made to therefore improve the team’s program after a solid season in 2011. At the end of the 2011 season, Beauchamp Jr. finished seventh in points with one top five and five top 10s. The change has already started to take effect in the shop.

“Deon has been evaluating some things and making a few changes,” Beauchamp said. “We’ll also be going over the cars very closely so he can get a better understanding of the setup we’ve been running. The whole team in energized and we can’t wait to get the season going.”

  • Sammy Swindell Dominates 2nd Night of Chili Bowl Smoke Locks in

Sammy Swindell Dominates 2nd Night of Chili Bowl Smoke Locks in

[media-credit id=30 align=”alignright” width=”200″][/media-credit]Night two of the Chili Bowl has come to an end. It was an awesome night of racing. Some real hard core old school dirt flying hard charging never say die racing. I have to say that I said last night that it just doesn’t get better than this and I was wrong. Tonight was better. The three top dogs of the night met both expectations and surprise with Sammy Swindell winning the A main. The surprise of the night was young Danny Stratton who came home in 2nd. And another expectation Tony Stewart sealing his spot in Saturday’s big show with a third in the A main.

I know there are a lot of folks out there that don’t like Sammy Swindell but let me tell you he is like watching a master magician. He not only has incredible car control it seems he almost anticipates the moves of others on the track. He is personable. He is honest. He doesn’t beat around the bush. He will tell you what he thinks. “I got it a little messed up there for a few laps and Danny got out in the front there but I got it straightened out and ran him down. But anything can happen here I hope you are asking me questions from the winners circle on Saturday.” There is very little doubt in my mind that I will indeed be talking to Sammy Swindell on the podium on Saturday. The man has won the Chili Bowl 4 times and whether he comes home first or whether he comes home 3rd, this man is a champion and hall of famer and he showed how and why tonight.

Then you have Danny Stratton, young, brash and committed to one thing and one thing only winning. “We came here to get in the show. We did that. But I think we lost a little bit from the qualifier to the feature and that I am not happy about.” He cut his way through the field with an energy that only youth and invincibility could provide. If he noticed his near misses you wouldn’t know it. He pointed the nose to the front and he never looked back. He has a bright future ahead of him. We will see young Mr. Stratton in the years to come in higher ranking series.

Then there was the man that seemingly everyone came to see, Tony Stewart. The Midget hall of famer didn’t disappoint the crowd or his fans. Finishing second in the heat and first in the qualifying race and third in the A main he secured his spot in the big show on Saturday. To watch him work on the car honestly you would think he was a surgeon working on a patient. Watching him drive you were watching a defying feat over gravity and physics. You would have seen no fear and no worry. “You have to be on your marks every single lap out there. It’s not like a Sprint Cup car where you have 500 laps so if you mess up on one you have 499 to get it back. Most of these races are under 25 laps. You don’t have time. You have to be on the mark.” To watch him with fans you would have seen a curious exchange of energy, emotion and affection. No matter the age, no matter the sex. This was the man they call Smoke and he was a crowd favorite.

When you add these three names to the 3 outstanding competitors from last night, Kyle Larson, Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Michael Pickens, the A main on Saturday is already a must see event. There are two more nights of qualifying races yet to go. During those two nights we will see Kevin Swindell, Bryan Clauson, J.J. Yeley, and Joey Saldana. There is no way the racing is going to cool off regardless of how much snow falls in Tulsa.

It’s time to finish my job here for the night. But to be honest I feel guilty calling it a job. It was one of the most fun nights of racing I have had in a long time. It ranks close to the very best night of racing I have ever had and the Chili Bowl is not over yet.

A note of interest during the intermission this evening it was announced that Levi Jones of TSR had been named North American Non Winged Sprint Car Driver of the year. Congratulations to Levi and all of his team at TSR.

See you all tomorrow at 5:30 PM CST tomorrow for the third day of the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals

  • The Battle For The Golden Driller Begins in Tulsa

The Battle For The Golden Driller Begins in Tulsa

[media-credit id=30 align=”alignright” width=”200″][/media-credit]The Chili Bowl Midget Nationals began in Tulsa Oklahoma today. The event is a week of hard core racing. This year’s event garnered over 500 driver entries. Each driver is bidding for a Saturday night A Main starting position.

The activities began with the first group of qualifiers running heat races and qualifying races and on into C main, B main, and A main features. The top 4 from the qualifying races qualified for the A main and the C and B main transferred their top 4. The A main transfers its top 3 finishers into the Chili Bowl on Saturday Night.

Each day of qualifying leading up to the Chili Bowl on Saturday Night will feature the same process of qualifying races up to the A main. Saturday will fill the field with transfer positions from consie races from those that did not qualify the first 4 nights.

The Midget race car for those who are new to open wheel and dirt racing, are 1000 lbs and 72 inches long. They run 4 cylinder engines that produce approximately 300 – 350hp.

Midgets came into being in 1933 and are not intended to run long distances. The average length of a race being 20 – 25 laps. The horsepower to weight ratio of these cars makes them both powerful and exciting to watch. Their short wheel base however, makes them prone to roll over crashes which made it necessary to add the roll bar system in the early 70’s.

The Chili Bowl is their Super Bowl race. It is held in Tulsa Oklahoma at the QT Center. The names that hold the Golden Driller are impressive in their own right. Names like Sammy Swindell, Kevin Swindell, Tony Stewart, and Tim McCreadie top the list. It’s those names and their car owners that create the first night draw with the Race of Champions.

In order to be in the Race of Champions you must have won a Golden Driller or been the car owner of someone who has won the Golden Driller. This year’s field was 14 cars. The starting positions were drawn for drivers by children selected from the stands. For the 4th year in a row Sammy Swindell drew the pole position. Returning to the Chili Bowl after a 3 year absence Tony Stewart started tail end Charlie in 14th in the 14.

Stewart arrived late yesterday and missed the practice and hot laps and so was climbing in his Spike chassis Chevy Performance Chevrolet number 14 for the first time when the Champions took the track for a few hot laps just before the Champions features.

The race was an action packed high energy highly contested event that saw Sammy Swindell take an early commanding lead. Son Kevin Swindell made a hard charge on the outside to catch the elder Swindell and started around him on the high side when a caution came out for Jason Leffler getting upside down. Leffler was not injured and the green came back in very short order. Stewart was charging through the field and was up to 6th when the caution again flew for a spin on the front stretch. When the green came back out Kevin Swindell charged hard to the outside and Sammy dived low to the bottom coming out of 4 to hold off the charge and took the checkers. Stewart finished 7th. Ricky Stenhouse Jr who was also slotted to run the race experienced mechanical difficulties and never started the race. Bryan Clauson of TSR finished 6th.

The A main was a hard fought return to grass roots racing. After an evening of difficulties Kyle Larson charged hard to the front taking the lead from George Ramey on lap 18 and he never looked back. Ricky Stenhouse Jr challenged briefly for the lead in heavy traffic but could not catch the charging Larson and finished in 2nd securing a place in the Chili Bowl feature on Saturday. The transferring drivers were in 1st place Kyle Larson, 2nd Ricky Stenhouse Jr. 3rd Michael Pickens.

The action picks up again tomorrow evening at5:30 CSTwith notables like Bryan Clauson, Tony Stewart, and Kevin Swindell running their qualifying races.

  • Alex Tagliani To Drive For Bryan Herta Autosport

It seems like the perfect combination on paper. The team that won the Indianapolis 500 last year has hired last year’s Indianapolis 500 pole winner to be their driver.

Bryan Herta Autosport announced that Alex Tagliani will drive for them in 2012.

With six top-10 finishes last year and two pole starts, BHA co-owners Bryan Herta and Steve Newey wanted to hire Tagliani due to his experience.

“We are very proud to have Alex Tagliani join our team for our first full season of IndyCar competition,” Herta said in a press release. “He brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the program, and is the perfect fit for us and our sponsor partners. Together with Todd Malloy and Brian Page in engineering, and the Don Lambert-led crew, Alex has the full support of a very talented group of professionals behind him.”

Tagliani will be behind a Lotus next year, as BHA previously announced it’s factory partner. On January 12th, BHA is expected to reveal the team’s primary sponsor.

“I’m really happy to drive for BHA,” Tagliani said. “Having known Bryan for a long time, I recognize that he’s a nice guy with genuine integrity. I believe that he and Steve Newey deserve to own a great IndyCar team, and I’m honored to be part of the building of BHA’s 2012 program.

“It’s also a great honor for me to represent the Lotus brand as a factory partner. Lotus has so much history in the world of motorsports. As a team, we have a lot of work in front of us and while challenging, it will be fun to be at the core of both engine and team development. BHA has a great group of people and I’m looking forward to working with them.”

Veteran race engineer Todd Malloy has already been re-signed by the team to lead the engineering efforts for the team.

Tagliani’s first task will be to lend his experience to the Lotus engine testing program, followed by team testing scheduled to begin in early February. The IZOD IndyCar Series kicks off the 2012 season March 25 on the streets of St. Petersburg.

  • Don Thomson Jr. To Crew Chief for J.R. Fitzpatrick in 2012

Don Thomson Jr. To Crew Chief for J.R. Fitzpatrick in 2012

    [media-credit id=4 align=”alignleft” width=”200″][/media-credit]

Fitzpatrick Motorsports announced on January 9th that Don Thomson Jr. will be crew chief for J.R. Fitzpatrick in 2011.

Thomson Jr. hangs up his helmet as a driver for 2012 after winning seven Canadian championships and driving the EHR/Team 3 Red Dodge last year.

“I am really excited about this next chapter in my career and glad to be back at Fitzpatrick Motorsports, the Hamilton, Ontario native said. “I am comfortable here, I know the way the system works here and John is really committed to put the best product on the track for J.R. and our sponsor partners. I have also known J.R. since he was eight years old and he has grown to become the best driver in the series so I really want to be part of whatever he does up here.”

Before moving to EHR for 2011, Thomson had spent four years racing for Fitzpatrick so it was no surprise that shortly after the season, discussions started between J.R. Fitzpatrick, Thomson and team owner John Fitzpatrick.

“I know Thomson well and I know what he brings to the team,” John Fitzpatrick said. “We were a pretty formidable program, winning eight championships between him and J.R. during the CASCAR days and I expect his transition to Crew Chief here to be pretty seamless.”

The role of pit boss and adviser to Fitzpatrick isn’t a new role either as he built and crewed a late model program in the early years and was there for Fitzpatrick’s first laps behind the wheel of a CASCAR.

“I am really pumped to get this season started,” J.R. said. “I had a lot of good runs last season and Thomson’s addition to the team will only make us stronger. The new car should be great and to have another championship caliber mind working in the shop gives me great confidence.”

Fitzpatrick is looking for his first Canadian championship since winning the CASCAR championship 2006. Last year, Fitzpatrick finished third in points with 10 top 10s in 12 races.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season gets underway May 20 on the road course at Mosport International Raceway. The Championship will be comprised of 12 races in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

  • Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Completes Roar Before the Rolex 24

Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Completes Roar Before the Rolex 24

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 9, 2012) – Five-time and reigning GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Cars Series Champions (2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011) and four-time and defending Rolex 24 At Daytona Winners (2006, 2007, 2008, 2011) Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates (CGRFS) completed three days of testing at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the 50th Rolex 24 At Daytona later this month.

The No. 01 TELMEX/Target Dinan-Prepared BMW Riley piloted by defending race winners Scott Pruett, Memo Rojas, Graham Rahal and Joey Hand finished the test sixth overall with a 1:41.761, while the No. 02 Target/TELMEX Dinan-Prepared BMW Riley of Dario Franchitti, Juan Pablo Montoya, Scott Dixon and Jamie McMurray finished eighth with a time of 1:41.868.  The No.10 Corvette Daytona Prototype of SunTrust Racing with Angelelli/Taylor/Briscoe topped the charts with a 1:41.142.

The team rolled out a pair of new-look Riley DPG3s at the test, which is the new bodywork style for the Riley Chassis manufacturer in the Daytona Prototype category.  It was the first test the team has participated in with the new formula.

Most notable of the three days of action was an unfortunate situation in the opening laps of Saturday’s night session when the No.01 was spun by another car entering turn three of the infield road-course section of the track, resulting in damage and a tow-back to the garage for lengthy repairs.  Due to the limited availability of spare parts for the new bodywork the No.01 team was unable to test the Sunday sessions.

The 2012 Rolex Series season opens with the 50th Anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Jan. 28-29.

    QUOTEBOARD:

Scott Dixon, No. 02 Target/TELMEX Dinan-Prepared BMW Riley: “For me, this is the most fun event we do all year.  It gets everyone together.  Sure, we want to win the race, but there’s not so much pressure.  All of us on the team are pretty close with our times, so everyone pulls their weight.  Our times are down a little bit right now as we learn about the new cars, but this team is consistent and it deals with problems really well.  It also helps having the same driver lineup back.”

Scott Pruett, No. 01 TELMEX/Target Dinan-Prepared BMW Riley: “I had just passed a GT car.  He hit me in the rear and I spun.  That put me into the guardrail and tires.  It’s definitely a little setback.  Normally, we’d just throw new parts back on it and get back out there, but since this is a new car, we’re going to take the car back to the shop and take our time getting a good look at everything. We will take advantage of a bad situation and learn from it.”

About Chip Ganassi Racing Teams Chip Ganassi has been a fixture in the auto racing industry for over 25 years and is considered one of the most successful as well as innovative owners the sport has anywhere in the world.  Today his teams include four in the IZOD IndyCar Series, two cars in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, and one Daytona Prototype in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series.  Overall his teams have 14 championships and 145 victories, including three Indianapolis 500s, a Daytona 500, a Brickyard 400 and four Rolex 24 At Daytonas.  Ganassi boasts state-of-the-art race shop facilities in Indianapolis and Brownsburg, Ind. and Concord, N.C., with a corporate office in Pittsburgh, Penn.

  • CHEVY GRAND-AM AT ROAR BEFORE THE 24 – Day 3 – Final Testing Notes and Quotes

CHEVY GRAND-AM AT ROAR BEFORE THE 24 – Day 3 – Final Testing Notes and Quotes

Team Chevy Concludes Successful Roar Before the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 8, 2012) – The checkered flag has fallen on the final test session of the Roar Before the Rolex 24. It was an very successful weekend on-track for Team Chevy in all three Grand-Am Road Racing classes, Rolex Sports Car Series (Rolex) Daytona Prototype (DP) and Grand Touring (GT) as well as Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) Grand Sport (GS).

As was in the case in every DP session on both Friday and Saturday, the Corvette DP led with way Sunday with the top-five positions in the final combined time sheet. Max Angelelli ran the fastest lap of the three-day session on Sunday morning with a lap of 126.712 mph in the No. 10 SunTrust Corvette DP co-driven by Ricky Taylor and Ryan Briscoe. The two Action Express Corvette DP cars followed the SunTrust team.

In both GT and GS, the Camaro teams continued to refine their setups throughout the day.  In GT, the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R posted another top-five time at the conclusion of today’s testing.  With virtually perfect weather conditions, teams saw continual improvement as the engineers and crews fine-tuned their preparation for the Rolex 24 Hour at Daytona weekend.

The 2012 Rolex Series season opens with the 50th Anniversary of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Jan. 28-29. 2012. Opening practice and qualifying will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26. The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season-opening GRAND-AM 200 highlights the Friday schedule.

JIM LUTZ, GRAND-AM PROGRAM RACING, GM RACING: WHAT ARE YOUR FINAL THOUGHTS ON TESTING AT DAYTONA: “I am quite pleased with the team’s testing results in all three classes, the DP, GT and GS. I think all of our teams accomplished everything they wanted to during the weekend. We are in really good shape for the race event. I hope the weather will be as nice as it has been during all of these test days. Everyone was pleasantly surprised with how many spectators we had here at Daytona, just for test days. It is a good sign of interest in the race coming up. I am quite satisfied with all we accomplished these three days.”

DID YOU SEE EVERYTHING OUT OF THE CORVETTE DP YOU EXPECTED? “I am pretty happy with where the Corvette DP cars are at after the weekend and what the teams accomplished in getting their cars dialed in, brake system refinement, getting their drivers rotated through and just getting familiar with the new Corvette body. I’m very happy with that. It is still pretty much of an unknown as to really how fast everybody will be. I don’t think until we have qualifying we aren’t going to know where we stand relative to the competition. We are very happy with what was accomplished.”

MAX ANGELELLI, NO. 10 SUNTRUST/ WAYNE TAYLOR RACING CORVETTE DP:

ON PAPER, AT LEAST, IT LOOKED TO BE A VERY SUCCESSFUL WEEKEND FOR THE SUNTRUST TEAM. WHAT’S THE REALITY BEHIND THE SUNTRUST TEAM BEING ON TOP OF THE TIMESHEETS, AND SO OFTEN, DURING THIS TEST? “You’ve got to understand that we were pushing the limit and, in the first session today, we did a qualifying run under the perfect conditions – low fuel, new tires, a good, clear lap, no mistakes. It was the perfect lap. Obviously we’re happy, but not because of that lap. We’re happy because we did eight practices without a single issue. Our SunTrust Corvette ran really well the entire time. So far, I’ve never had a January test as good as this one. It’s been great, very successful. All we’re hoping for is another weekend like this one, and that will be the race weekend. The sad part is that this was just a test. There is a lot that will have to be achieved on race weekend, but I’m pretty confident.”

WHAT WILL HAPPEN OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS BEFORE THE SUNTRUST TEAM RETURNS FOR THE ACTUAL ROLEX 24 RACE WEEKEND? “The new Corvette is a major step that General Motors has taken. There is a lot that still has to be done; many little things that still need to be improved. And, to understand that the hardest race for a car is its first race, and this one just so happens to be a 24-hour race, it’s a major risk and commitment that everybody is taking. On the positive side, things have gone very, very well, so far. I feel our team is a good team. Our guys, our mechanics and everybody, they’re really good. This is when you see that having a good team makes a huge difference, under these kinds of circumstances. I can’t wait to get back here in a few weeks.”

RICKY TAYLOR, NO. 10 SUNTRUST/ WAYNE TAYLOR RACING CORVETTE DP: ON PAPER, IT LOOKS LIKE IT COULDN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN IT HAS GONE FOR THE SUNTRUST TEAM THIS WEEKEND. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE THREE-DAY TEST?

“It’s hard to tell considering we have no idea what everybody else’s plan was this weekend. We did a lot of different things. We did qualifying simulations, we did long runs, we did brake testing, we did radio testing, back-up radio testing. We did everything you could possibly think of and had plenty of time and are now down to our final prep for the 24-hour. Brian (Pillar) our engineer told me he’s never left a test this happy and this well-prepared, so I think that says a lot.”

CONSIDERING YOU’RE ROLLING OUT A NEW CAR AND ALL THAT MEANS, WERE YOU PARTICULARLY CONCERNED ABOUT HOW QUICKLY THINGS WOULD PROGRESS?

“We knew we had a good base when we came to Daytona this weekend. We knew where to start and everything. It was a matter of getting up to speed and tweaking a few things from a really good starting point. Max, Ryan and I all liked the same things, so it was pretty constructive and we were able to get to where we wanted to be pretty fast. I think I’m happy with this car. If we could race this car, I’d be happy if nothing changes. Twenty-four hours is a long time. There will be a lot of cars out there and a lot of variables so, hopefully, we can make it to the end and be part of the fight over those last couple of hours.”

RYAN BRISCOE, NO. 10 SUNTRUST/ WAYNE TAYLOR RACING CORVETTE DP: YOUR OVERALL THOUGHTS AS YOU LOOK BACK ON THE PAST THREE DAYS OF TESTING WITH THE SUNTRUST TEAM? “It felt very normal. I’ve driven with these guys so many times, now, and really felt comfortable right away driving with Max and Ricky. I love the new cockpit and the Corvette body style. The car looks great, it feels great. I really felt comfortable and confident driving the car this weekend. It’s great working with a lot of common people at Chevy and GM and Pratt & Miller, too. There is a lot of really useful overlay as far as getting to know people and the same people I work with on the IndyCar side. It’s pretty exciting and good for me to be racing here with Max and Ricky and the whole SunTrust team.”

THE SUNTRUST CAR WAS FASTEST IN MOST OF THE EIGHT SESSIONS. DO YOU FEEL THAT WILL TRANSLATE WELL TO THE ROLEX 24 WEEKEND ITSELF? “I hope so. We want to stay at the front and the car felt really good in practice. It’s handling beautifully and just feels really fast. That’s a good sign for the race. But, over a 24-hour period, you’ve got to be there at the end and that’s going to be the main goal.”

WAYNE TAYLOR, TEAM OWNER, NO. 10 SUNTRUST/WAYNE TAYLOR RACING CORVETTE DP: YOU MUST BE HAPPY WITH THE WAY THINGS WENT THIS WEEKEND FOR THE SUNTRUST TEAM AND THE NEW CORVETTE DP? “I’m extremely happy by the speed at which everybody at GM and Pratt & Miller and Wayne Taylor Racing has been able to turn this car around in terms of making it solid for a 24-hour run. We’ve come here and had no problems all weekend while going through all the changes we wanted to. Speaking to Max, Ricky and Ryan independently, all three had the same feedback. They’re all happy. I’ve got to be careful because it’s actually gone so well that we’ll be wondering what we might have missed. I think the guys have done a good job. They’ve taken the time to make sure the car is ready for the race. We did try to simulate a qualifying lap with Max this morning and we did a really good lap. I’m not sure if we can go any faster than that. But the main thing, at this point, is we have a car that all three drivers are really happy to drive. I’m really happy that we can take two good weeks to regroup and get ready for the big one.”

STILL, WITH THE UNCERTAINTY OF HAVING TO RACE A NEW PACKAGE FOR THE FIRST TIME AT THE END OF THE MONTH, DO YOU FEEL MUCH BETTER AFTER THE WAY THINGS WENT THIS WEEKEND? “I feel much better. We’ve got the best crew on the pit lane and they look at every single millimeter of this car. There’s not even a question in my mind that we have the best driver lineup. We have three guys who are fast. We have three guys who are reliable. We have three guys who have done this before, together. And we have three guys who understand it takes a team effort.”

ALEX GURNEY, NO. 99 GAINSCO/BOB STALLINGS RACING CORVETTE DP: “We ran the whole time without any show stoppers. We got through a lot of laps, so we have a lot of information to draw on.  We are still learning about how the tires work with this car, and that is kind of our one question mark at this point.  We did get to do a full fuel run, the whole stint, so I think we got a lot accomplished.  The car is pretty quick so we feel pretty good about it.”

JON FOGARTY, NO. 99 GAINSCO/BOB STALLINGS RACING CORVETTE DP: “The team has done a tremendous job. They worked through the holidays and we threw a lot of issues at them that you need to sort out for a 24-hour race, and they did a good job.  We still have a few lingering ones, and the more we run, the more stuff seems to come up.  Our engineer said we are playing the game ‘Whac-A-Mole’ a little bit. You get one down and another one pops back up.  There is a little bit of that going on, but we are definitely pleased with the progress that the guys have made.  We found some good pace and we are definitely getting a handle on it.  I am encouraged that we used almost all of the track time this weekend, but it’s never enough when you are working with a new car.”

MEMO GIDLEY, NO. 99 GAINSCO/BOB STALLINGS RACING CORVETTE DP: “I feel good. Everything is going really smoothly it seems.  Still some issues to work out, I would say, but the consistency, and how the car feels over the course of a long run, is good.  It’s good on old tires and mechanically we have not had any real problems through the test. We’ve just run laps and kind of stuck to our plan.  I am super optimistic.  For me, it is the best shot I have yet at the Rolex 24 with GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing.”

BOB STALLINGS, TEAM OWNER, NO. 99 GAINSCO/BOB STALLINGS RACING CORVETTE DP: “I feel really good about it. The car is way beyond where I thought it would be at this point.  I really thought it was going to take up until the last practice right before the race to have a general idea where we were, or a sense of comfort, but the drivers are pretty happy and the car is certainly drivable.  It’s obviously not perfect, they are never perfect, but all in all, it is pretty doggone good. We’re encouraged.”

MAX PAPIS, NO. 9 ACTION EXPRESS RACING CORVETTE DP:  “I predict we will have one of the closest finishes in Rolex 24 history. I’ve been looking at the time chart, and there is no one with a clear advantage over everyone. We’re going to see 24 hours of everyone pushing to the limit. The key will be not making any mistakes, and dealing with traffic will be more important this year than in the past. I’ve been coming to the Rolex 24 since 1996, and I think yesterday’s crowd was the biggest I’ve ever seen here for testing – the race track was filled with fans.”

CHEVY GRAND-AM AT ROAR BEFORE THE 24 – Day 2 – Testing Notes and Quotes

Team Chevy Continues Successful Grand-Am Testing at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 7, 2012) – As Day Two of the intense testing sessions of the Grand-Am Roar Before the Rolex 24 came to an end, the Corvette DP continued to shine on-track; both in the sun and under the lights. Team Chevy in the Rolex Sports Car Series practiced both during the day as well as a night practice in preparation for the 50th running of the Rolex 24-Hour at Daytona.  The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge spent two sessions on-track.

The Corvette DP swept the top four places in Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype class, led by a lap of 1:41.338 (126.468 mph) by the No. 5 Action Express Corvette DP co-driven by Darren Law, David Donohue and Christian Fittipaldi. Second in the order was the No. 10 SunTrust Corvette DP co-driven by Max Angelelli, Ricky Taylor and Ryan Briscoe that ran 1:41:403 (126.387 mph) followed by the No. 9 Action Express Corvette DP shared by Joao Barbosa, JC France, Terry Borcheller and Max Papis with a lap of 1:41:475 (126.468 mph). Fourth fastest was the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP co-driven by Antonio Garcia, Richard Westbrook, Oliver Gavin and Jan Magnussen with a lap of 1:41:655 (126.073 mph).

Not far behind with fast lap of the day of 1:41:792 (125.904 mph) was the No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP co-driven by Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty and Memo Gidley.

In the Rolex Sports Car Series Grand Touring (GT) class, the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R, co-driven by Robin Liddell, John Edwards and Ronnie Bremer, ended the day in second place in the combined results of the test sessions. The No. 88 Autohaus Camaro GT.R with co-drivers Jordan Taylor, Paul Edwards, Matthew Marsh and Tom Milner ended the day as 11th fastest. The No. 75 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R co-driven by Al Carter, Hugh Plumb, Matt Bell and Eric Curran, continued to gain positions on the speed chart as the day unfolded.

The Camaro GS.R teams participated in both sessions for the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Grand Sport class in preparation for the Grand-Am 200 which will run prior to the Rolex 24 Hour at Daytona. All of the Team Chevy Camaro GS.R teams, Mitchum Motorsports, Stevenson Motorsports and CKS Autosport, continued to make improvements in their performance that saw them working their way toward the top of the speed chart.

Testing will conclude Sunday for Team Chevy with two practice sessions for both the Rolex Sports Car Series and the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

    QUOTES:

JIM LUTZ, GRAND-AM PROGRAM RACING, GM RACING: ON THE SECOND DAY OF TESTING AT DAYTONA: “The weather for testing was unbelievably fantastic today.  We had no fog this morning and it was warm which is makes it unusually good, sunny weather. It gives the teams the necessary time to maximize their sessions.

“It was a full day for all teams in all classes; DP, GT and GS. They all logged a lot of test miles and worked on fine-tuning their packages. The night test for the Rolex Series for both the DP and GT, all of the Chevy teams were able to get all of their drivers through and practiced green flag pit stops and driver changes.  Everything is still in one piece so it’s good.”

WHAT WILL THE TEAMS WORK ON TOMORROW, THE FINAL DAY OF THE ROAR BEFORE THE ROLEX 24? “Further refinement.  We’ve got the cars more or less dialed in setup-wise. We’ll run some long stints simulating the race where you run continuous laps until the point where you need fuel and track how the car behaves during a full stint, about 20-25 laps. We will run all the drivers through. Check fuel mileage, check brake wear and things like that. It will really be the final opportunity for all the Chevrolet teams in preparation for the race weekend.”

RICKY TAYLOR, NO. 10 SUNTRUST CORVETTE DP: TWO DAYS OF TESTING IN THE BOOKS WITH A LOT OF SPEED, IS IT AS GOOD AS IT SEEMS? “Yes, I think we have found a good, solid car that we can race. So now it’s just about trying things and seeing what sticks and seeing what doesn’t in making it into a 24 Hour car. If we can just get to the end of this one this year, I think we will be in really good shape to race to the end.”

HOW MUCH PROGRESS HAVE YOU MADE WITH THE CORVETTE DP ON A SCALE OF ONE TO 10 FROM WHERE THE SUNTRUST CORVETTE DP WAS WHEN WE ARRIVED VERSUS WHERE IS IT AT THE END OF TODAY? “It unrolled pretty good so I would give it a nine right now. We really started at about a seven so we’ve improved but we’ve been tweaking and trying things. I think from the knowledge standpoint, we went from like a four to a 10. We’ve really figured out the car and understand what we can do and what we can’t do.”

WHAT IS THE APPROACH ON THE FINAL DAY OF THE TEST TOMORROW? “I think tomorrow be will prepping the 24 Hour car. We have a lot of things to break-in. Tomorrow is kind of a boring day for the drivers, but in the morning we will probably experiment with some more things that Brian ( ) has up his sleeves and see what happens.”

ALEX GURNEY, NO. 99 GAINSCO/BOB STALLINGS RACING CORVETTE DP: “It’s definitely encouraging. It kind of feels like the best start we have had in a long time. There is a lot of ground to cover with this car. We are throwing the old book out, six years of stuff with the old Riley, and trying to relearn everything in a really short period of time is pretty tough.  We are going through all kinds of changes, through all different ride heights and things like that, to try and find the sweet spot. We are getting there.”

JON FOGARTY, NO. 99 GAINSCO/BOB STALLINGS RACING CORVETTE DP: “We’re definitely still exploring, seeing what we can get away with on the car that will allow us to run quickly and safely. There’s a lot going on and these three days at Daytona are going to be helpful, but I don’t expect to have the package sorted out anytime soon.  I think everybody with a new car is in the same boat, but we are doing a good job. The team is doing a great job sorting through all these nuances. We’ve managed to create a more stable platform that gives us a more consistent aero balance around the entirety of the race track. I’m confident that we’re going to keep improving on it, and I’m really happy with the progress we’ve made so far.”

MEMO GIDLEY, NO. 99 GAINSCO/BOB STALLINGS RACING CORVETTE DP: “I think that right now, we have a pretty drivable race car, for sure for the race. It actually seems reasonably fast also, but I think finding the aero balance of this new package is still a bit of a challenge.  I think we still haven’t quite gotten to that happy spot there in that area, but we are working at it every session. For sure, the biggest difference is that with this car and this team, which is a big part of it, is that the lap times are faster than I’ve ever gone. I’m the same driver and I’m the same guy.  I have seen it throughout my career, you are pounding around struggling at the mid or back part of the grid and you just get into a team with the exactly the same car or similar car and all of a sudden, you are at the front.  For me, that’s been the most eye-opening part of this experience and also the most gratifying.”

DAVID DONOHUE, NO. 5 ACTION EXPRESS CORVETTE DP: HOW IS THE TEST GOING AND THE NEW CORVETTE PERFORMING? “So far this test at Daytona is going fantastic for Action Express. The team is really faced with a unique challenge compared to everyone else in the (Rolex Sports Car) Series because we’ve got a new chassis and a new engine and of course the bodywork with the new Corvette. They have really risen to the challenge. We’ve been P1 and P2 the last couple of sessions. The car is coming along. I think for us the balance is sort of staying the same on the technical side. We seem to be finding a little bit of time here and there. Really our eye is on the big game in a couple of weeks. It’s nice to have speed but there is a big poker game being played here right now. We’re being the reference. But, we don’t know what that reference is for absolute speed or reference of what people want to show. So we are just doing our own job and seeing what we can get out of the new Corvette and so far we are really pleased.”

WHAT IS YOUR CONFIDENCE AS FAR AS DURABILITY-WISE FOR A LONG, GRUELING RACE? “We like to think the car is up to the challenge. But again, everything is so new to us, we really don’t know what to expect as far as some sort of problem. The older car which we had a lot more time with…because we had so much more time with, we knew where to look. Where with a new car, new engine, new everything, we aren’t really sure where to look because the packaging, the engine in the chassis, which leads to different issues compared to the other chassis and engines.  So it’s not all apples to apples when it comes to durability even though a lot of people have the same components in their cars. But again, I think our team is up to the challenge. If anyone can do it, our guys can.”

TERRY BORCHELLER, NO. 9 ACTION EXPRESS CORVETTE DP:  HOW IS THE TEST GOING AND HOW IS THE NEW CORVETTE PERFORMING? “For us the test is going well. This has been probably the most improvement we’ve seen with the car and it’s been the most improvement we’ve had as a team. So, for us it is going very well and thank you Chevrolet for building us a new car!”

IS THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CORVETTE DAYTONA PROTOTYPE EVERYTHING YOU EXPECTED? “It is getting better all the time. We hope, I guess I had hoped, it would be a little quicker out of the box. We’ve had some challenges I think to say the least. But I think we are going to be able to overcome them and it is common with a new car. There are a lot of things you have to sort through. I have been down that particular road quite a bit and it’s always been the case. You are always seem to be able to make the car a little bit faster over a little bit of time. The better the piece is coming out of the box; the better off it’s going to be in the long room. You always hope it’s a world-beater out of the box. I think the car looks amazing and I think that is going to bring a lot of fans to Grand-Am and I think it’s going to do a lot for the Chevrolet brand. And hopefully we can just keep making it faster.”

JOAO BARBOSA, NO. 9 ACTION EXPRESS RACING CORVETTE DP: TALK ABOUT HOW THE TEST IS GOING AND HOW THE CORVETTE DAYTONA PROTOTYPE IS DOING? “So far the Corvette is doing really well. We’ve been learning a lot about the car. Everything that is involved with the Corvette. Everything is brand new for us so it is a steep learning curve for us just to get ready for the 24 Hour race. But, so far, we’re pretty happy with the development we’ve done and the car is reacting really well around here at Daytona. So, we are just looking forward to the race.”

DO YOU THINK PEOPLE ARE SURPRISED TO SEE ALL THE CORVETTES AT THE TOP OF THE SPEED CHARTS? “I don’t know, we will just have to wait and see. These couple of days are just test days. Everybody is on their own program. We know what we are doing; we don’t know what everyone else is doing. We are pretty confident that the Corvette is going to be a pretty strong car during the race. And we are working hard to achieve that.”

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 90 SPIRIT OF DAYTONA CORVETTE DP: HOW IS THE TEST GOING SO FAR AND THE NEW CORVETTE DAYTONA PROTOTYPE IN THIS TEST? “I think it is going pretty well. This is the kind of test where you have to have as much information as you can get toward the race. It is basically the only time we have time enough to learn a lot and put different things together because when it comes to the race week, you don’t have enough time to cycle through all the drivers for the race. You don’t have time to setup the car so now is time to really learn everything we can and try way different setups. I think it is going pretty good. We have found a few packages that work and I think for the race we can put a full package together to have a good race.”

IS IT AS YOU EXPECTED? “I think so. It’s always difficult to gauge our performance because everybody is doing their own program so you don’t actually know how hard they are pushing or not compared to you. You need to focus on yourself, trying to make your car and fast and as comfortable as you can. When it comes to the race everybody will show how they have been working. So far we are in a good position.”

RICHARD WESTBROOK, NO. 90 SPIRIT OF DAYTONA CORVETTE DP: HOW IS THE TEST GOING AND THE NEW CORVETTE DAYTONA PROTOTYPE PERFORMING? “I had a couple of laps here yesterday and I’m about to get my first decent run. I’m going to do 45 minutes then Jan (Magnussen) is going to pop in and do 45; it will be his first run too. Very excited. I’ve been looking at the car for the last couple of days, I mean, obviously, it is so beautiful. I just can’t wait to drive it.  Ollie (Oliver Gavin) and Tony (Antonio Garcia) have been doing a lot of the setup work. So far, so good. We’ve been making a progress. Both drivers are all-in and are happy with the car. Still so work to do, just fine-tuning, but the basics seem to be good. We’re just doing all the things you need to do before a 24 Hour race. Just making sure when we come back for the 24, we’re ready to go.”

TIM BELL, NO. 6 MITCHUM MOTORSPORTS CAMARO GS.R: “Today went well testing the Mitchum No. 6 Chevrolet Camaro right out the box today was great. The track was cold this morning so I took it easy, but once we made some adjustments, we were running up with the front of the pack.”

AARON STEELE, NO. 6 MITCHUM MOTORSPORTS CAMARO GS.R: “My first taste of American Road Racing has been awesome, absolutely amazing! The Camaro is completely different to my F3 car but it’s great to drive and a fantastic car.”

JOEY ATTERBURY, NO. 62 MITCHUM MOTORSPORTS CAMARO GS.R: “It was great to get back behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Camaro GS.R for another year of racing in GRAND-AM.  The Camaro is more developed than it has ever been and should provide a great car throughout the 2012 season.”
