Vickers Wins a Wild Qualifying Session at Talladega

Brian Vickers took the Coors Light Pole Award for Sunday’s Geico 500 at the Talladega Superspeedway in what could be described as one of the weirdest qualifying sessions ever seen for a NASCAR Sprint Cup race. “It’s crazy,” Vickers said after the third and final segment was completed.

“I thought that coming to three (laps) to go that we had literally no shot. We were way back — like a half a straightaway behind the whole field and they all checked up and gave me a chance and gave me a run. I really get no credit for it. I just tried not to wreck.”

With the first session being split into two five minute sessions of 23 drivers, each driver waited until the last minutes to take to the track. No one really wanted to be the person leading the pack since they’re usually the slowest car on the track. Denny Hamlin was the first one to go out and no one followed.

“It’s kind of a dumb format”, Hamlin said after qualifying 38th, “but what can you do? I guess it’s supposed to be entertaining, but I don’t know. We just wanted to get a lap in and the object of this is to make sure we start the race with the same car we practiced.”

When the second group of 23 went out it seemed like they’d have one more lap of running at speed when they suddenly slowed down and many drivers in the Chase failed to get to the line before time expired, therefore their last lap did not count. Times for Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick , Jeff Gordon, Kyle Larson and others were not counted.

Harvick, who already qualified for the next round of the Chase and qualified 39th said, “This qualifying is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. It just doesn’t work on the speedways. They all made a plan and told me to be the lead guy. I took off and no one took off with me. Then we all sat around and here we are.  You have to be at the back, but all in all they told me to be the point person and nobody followed me. So appreciate everybody’s help.”

Jeff Gordon qualified 43rd and said, “I messed up ultimately. I just mistimed getting to the line. The whole group was going so slow I knew I had to have a gap and when I came across the line I thought I had enough to be able to complete that lap and get one more, which was the only way we were going to be able to make it. But we came up short. It’s a mess out there. It’s not easy.”

Defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson who qualified second said, “Having to really come through and work out for you is just the toughest thing, because 20 some guys and a lady have an idea of what is going to work and timing that right and finding what works for you is impossible.  Not impossible, just the odds very low.  Hopefully it is entertaining.  You don’t really feel like you are doing your part as a race car driver in a qualifying session like this, but it is plate racing and if it’s entertaining I guess I’m okay with it.”

A.J. Allmendinger, Ryan Blaney and Brad Keselowski rounded out the top five. There were some surprises in the top ten that saw Michael McDowell and Travis Kvapil lining up sixth and seventh. Chase contender Kasey Kahne was eighth. Terry Labonte and Michael Annett rounded out the top ten.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Justin Allgair and Reed Sorenson were the cars that were initially listed as “Did Not Qualify” but Sorenson was reinstated when it was found that the No. 87 car had an improperly sealed oil tank and was disqualified.

  • Peters Wins the Freds 250 at Talladega

Peters Wins the Freds 250 at Talladega

Timothy Peters captured his first win of the season in Saturday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Freds 250 powered by Coca Cola at Talladega Superspeedway. This was Peters’ first win at the “intimidating” superspeedway, his eighth career victory and it also gives him a win in six consecutive seasons.

Peters started 26th, avoided trouble on his way to the front and led 31 of 94 laps in a race that was surprising since there weren’t any of the “big ones” that you typically see at Talladega.

“It was just crazy! I gotta thank Darrell Wallace Jr. for working with me all day,” Peters said. “That last restart we got shuffled back and couldn’t get to each other, but we worked good all day.”

“I know Steve Byrnes is watching, he was riding along with me, so Steve we wish you well,” Peters added.

On lap 12, the first caution flag came out when German Quiroga got tapped and went around hard in the wall collecting Mason Mingus, Ron Hornaday Jr., Ryan Sieg and Chris Fontaine. There were also minor cautions for debris or single truck spins.

On lap 64 however, Joe Nemechek Jr. tapped Ben Kennedy sending his truck into the wall, then on its side, only to right itself and hit the wall again with the rear of the truck. Ryan Ellis got a piece of that wreck as well but nothing compared to Kennedy’s hard hit.

Tayler Malsam would come home in second place today, giving him his best career finish.

Malsam stated, “We ended up where we started, so it wasn’t a bad day.” He went on later to say, “I am looking forward to Texas, we got some good momentum going.”

Third place went to 24 year old  Spencer Gallagher, who is currently 27th in points with seven starts, one top-five finish, one top-ten finish and two DNF’s.

Bringing home fourth place was Tyler Reddick and in fifth, Ryan Blaney. Blaney’s finish moved him into second place in the points standings.

Erik Jones came home in sixth place followed by Chris Fontaine in seventh. John Wes Townley held the lead for a short period, ending the race with an eighth place finish.

Ninth and tenth place finishers were Darrell Wallace Jr. and Joe Nemechek, respectively.

Johnny Sauter experienced an engine failure on lap 24 and finished a disappointing 31st, effectively ending his run for the championship. He is currently fourth in the standings, 36 points behind leader Matt Crafton.

Your top five in the points are as follows:

    1) Matt Crafton 674
    2) Ryan Blaney 658 -16
    3) Darrell Wallace Jr. 646 -28
    4) Johnny Sauter 638 -36
    5) Timothy Peters 597 -77

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series heads next to Martinsville Speedway on Saturday October 25 for the Kroger 200.

  • Tyler Reddick Captures First Career Truck Series Pole at Talladega

Tyler Reddick Captures First Career Truck Series Pole at Talladega

Tyler Reddick won the 21 Means 21 Pole Award Friday afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway in his Brad Keselowski Racing No. 19 Ford, with a fast lap of 186.827 mph. It is Reddick’s first career pole in 13 starts in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

“It means a lot to get a pole in my rookie year,” Reddick said. “It’s great to start up front, especially at Talladega.”

The 18-year-old Reddick will be joined on the first row by Tayler Malsam in his No. 32 Chevrolet, in second place. This is Malsam’s best starting position in 49 truck series races. Matt Crafton, who currently leads the points standings, will start third followed by Johnny Sauter and Ryan Blaney to round out the top five.

Malsam spoke about the revamped qualifying procedure saying, “The format’s crazy, you have to really hustle around the apron, which makes it a lot different from most of the racetracks.”  He continued, “It adds a lot of excitement for the fans.”

Friday’s qualifying featured the new accelerated format for restrictor-plate tracks. The first session consisted of two groups, each with only five minutes to make qualifying laps. Mason Mingus was fastest overall in the first session.

Erik Jones led the second session with the fastest qualifying lap in the history of the Truck Series, 191.161 mph.

Darrell Wallace Jr., fourth in the series standings, had a disappointing qualifying effort and will begin the race in the 27th position. It is the worst starting position of his career. Milka Duno did not qualify after an engine failure in practice Friday.

Reddick will lead the field to green Saturday for the Fred’s 250 Powered by Coca-Cola. The race will be televised on FOX at 1 p.m. ET.

  • Brad Keselowski Earns Nationwide Win at Charlotte

Brad Keselowski Earns Nationwide Win at Charlotte

The Drive for the Cure 300 could have had many winners but Brad Keselowski persevered to bring home the trophy. He avoided multiple crashes, aggressive driving and determinedly made his way to the front, passing teammate Ryan Blaney on lap 187 and holding off Kyle Busch to claim his fourth Nationwide win of the season. It was his third win at Charlotte and his 31st career win in the series.

The first caution of the race occurred on the first lap and involved 11 cars. There were seven more cautions before the end of the race. Tire strategy also came into play as Keselowski got four fresh tires for the restart on lap 182 and eventually passed Blaney who had opted for only two tires to gain track position on lap 169.

“Under the yellow (that preceded the final restart), I was confident,” Keselowski stated.  “Then he (Blaney) took off in those first five laps, and I went, ‘Uh, oh.’ I wasn’t holding back, and he was driving away, and then the pendulum swung.

“His car seemed to fall off—whether it was the two tires or just the nature of his car, I don’t know—but it came back to us. Yeah, when the yellow was out, I would have definitely said I was very confident, but after those first five laps, it swung back to us.”

When Keselowski was asked ‘What makes this group so special,’ he replied, “It’s the people, whenever you have a successful team, it’s always the people, right? It’s no different here.”

Second place went to Kyle Busch who was coming on aggressively but ran out of laps. Busch already has six wins in the Nationwide Series this year.

“They were faster than us tonight,” Busch said concerning Keselowski’s No. 22 Team Penske Ford. “Just knew that with about 60 (laps) to go that we had a tire advantage over them, and that was going to be the way for us to win the race.”

Third place went to Matt Kenseth who had led the race on and off but not at the right time, Kenseth has no wins as of yet in the Nationwide Series. Blaney took home a respectable fourth place finish, while fifth place went to Kyle Larson, who drove his car every which way except upside down tonight.

Sixth place went to Chris Buescher and seventh place went to Trevor Bayne. Eighth, ninth, and 10th went consecutively to Chase Elliott (making it his 24th top-10 finish this year), Elliott Sadler and Brian Scott.

  • Kyle Busch Captures Lady In Blue at Kansas Lottery 300

Kyle Busch Captures Lady In Blue at Kansas Lottery 300

Kyle Busch took the Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas Speedway after starting sixth and leading only 34 laps. The turning point came in the closing laps when Busch took command, passing Harvick with 20 laps to go. It was his sixth Nationwide series victory of the year. Kevin Harvick and Ryan Blaney crossed the line in the follow up spots.

Busch stated, “Great effort by (crew chief) Adam (Stevens) and all the guys on this 54 car. It was really awesome again today and should have won at Chicago just like we did here today. Missed out there, but we just keep doing things right, and you end up in Victory Lane, so you have to have it all match up for you.”

Kevin Harvick finished second and said, “They gave us a good opportunity with strategy there, (but) the 54 was quite a bit better as we got going into the run,” Harvick said. “We could hold him off for a short run, but in the end his car would maintain speed, and ours would slow down. We just got beat there today, but that happens.”

Ryan Blaney who finished third commented on his finish in the Penske Ford, “We started off really good and in the middle of the race we were really good. We had green flag stops and Kevin stayed out because he pitted a little before everybody on that previous caution. That caught everybody a lap down and that put us behind a little bit. Kevin had a fast car. We were just too loose the last run and we didn’t tighten it up enough and the track cooled off a little too much, more than we were prepared for. I couldn’t get in the corner. Not a bad day for us, we just need to adjust a little better.”

Chase Elliott holds on to the points lead despite a 10th place finish and leads Regan Smith by 38 points. Regan Smith crashed in qualifying and had to go to a back up car and struggled all day after being penalized to the rear of the field. He finished in 22nd place.

Ty Dillion had a strong day  qualifying on the pole and finishing fifth and is currently third (-40) in the championship points standings,  followed by Brian Scott (-57) in fourth and Elliott Sadler in fifth (-60).

The next event for the Nationwide Series will be in Charlotte, on October 10, 2014.
