Harvick Takes Pole for the Hollywood Casino 400

Kevin Harvick took the Coors Light Pole Award for the Hollywood Casino 400 with a speed of 197.621 mph or 27.325 seconds It is his third pole in a row at Kansas Speedway. The pole was Harvick’s eighth of the season and his 21st top-10 start in 2014.

Harvick also set a new track qualifing record of 197.773 mph in the second round. It broke the previoius track record of 194.252 mph which was his own track record.  It was the ninth track qualifying record for Chevrolet in 2014.

“I’m just really proud of everybody on our Budweiser team. We’ve been dealt some bad luck throughout the year, but it hasn’t fazed them in continuing to work on the cars and the speed. The first three weeks we have led a bunch of laps and qualified well. Last week had them covered and a valve stem got knocked off by a lugnut. Keep doing the things that you are doing and that luck will all come full circle and as long as the cars continue to be fast that stuff all comes back to you. Hopefully it peaks at the right time,” stated Harvick.

The outside front row starting spot belongs to Brian Vickers. It is his ninth top-10 start of 2014 and his fourth in  11 races at Kansas Speedway.

“It’s fast — wow. A 27.50 second lap around here, that was a fun lap. All the guys on this team did an awesome job with the car. That was probably the best setup race car on the race track. You’re not going to get through the corners any faster than that. I was really proud of the guys. Hopefully we can take that and take it into the race,” Vickers said post qualifying.

Aric Almirola will start on the second row in third position after being eliminated from the Chase last week at Dover.

“That was really important for us,” he noted. “Even though we are out of it we still want to compete like we are in the Chase; prove we are capable of doing it and prove it to ourselves and everyone else out there. This is exactly how we need to do that. We need a good run Sunday. We still have a lot to race for. We can get as high as fifth in points and that should be our goal, to get as high in points as we can.”

Joey Logano, who will start in fourth, was happy with his qualifying effort.

“That was faster than we were in practice, so that is good,” he explained. “Overall it is a good starting spot. Fourth is good. The outside lane is good to be in. We will try to move up from there and make sure we make good use of that good starting spot. That is important. Track position is important here and qualifying is one of the most important things of the weekend here and I am glad we were able to capitalize and get a good starting spot.”

The Hollywood Casino 400 will be televised on ESPN Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.

  • Jeff Gordon Scores Career Win 92 in AAA 400 at Monster Mile

Jeff Gordon Scores Career Win 92 in AAA 400 at Monster Mile

While his teammate Jimmie Johnson has traditionally dominated at the Dover Monster Mile, it was Jeff Gordon scoring his 92nd win, his fifth win at Dover, and his fourth win of the season. Gordon also punched his ticket to the next round in NASCAR’s Chase for the Championship.

“It was a really solid race all day long,” Gordon said. “Our strength was definitely the stronger runs. My car really came to life then and we could start reeling them in. I was pretty happy from the start.”

“We’re a team that is good enough to win and to ultimately be consistent.”

“Yeah, we knew this was going to be a pressure-packed race and a really tough track,” Alan Gustafson, crew chief said. “We knew we had to be on our game and we had to come together as a team.”

“I think all that kind of came to fruition here and we were able to win the race.”

Brad Keselowski, behind the wheel of the No. 2 Wurth Ford, did not need a Monster Mile win as he had already advanced to the next round of the championship Chase with his prior win. He did however finish second, notching another great run for Team Penske.

“Yeah, we’ve had a really good start, so we can’t really complain that much having won a race, and a second and a seventh. But it’s hard to look at that. All I can think about is how I wanted to win all three races.”

“And now it’s time to move forward,” Keselowski continued. “Three more races, a new start. We’ve got to keep our head on straight and push forward these next three like we have these last three.”

“All in all, it’s going to be a real challenge and if you can survive all three of these brackets and go to Homestead and win this thing, you’ve certainly earned it.”

Jimmie Johnson, behind the wheel of the No. 48 Lowe’s/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet, finished third and shared his excitement to be able to advance to the next round.

“These first three races went pretty well,” Johnson said. “I think Chicago was probably the track where we left the most points on the table.”

“Today we kind of ran, finished where we ran, but we had a decent car,” Johnson continued. “Really strong on the long runs but just would lose too much time to make up the deficit that I had there.”

“Good solid day, happy to advance.”

There was no doubt that Joey Logano was going to advance to the next round of the championship Chase, but he still sealed the deal with a fourth place run at the Monster Mile.

“It was a hard-fought day, which is pretty normal for here at Dover,” the driver of the No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford said. “It was a little bit of a tougher week for us. We didn’t have a very fast car off the truck, but Todd Gordon (crew chief) and all those guys did a great job giving me a car that was pretty racy.”

“We got something good out of it and now we’ll start the next round and try to move on to the next one.”

For Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Matt Kenseth, Ryan Newman, Carl Edwards, Denny Hamlin and Kasey Kahne, who finished 13th, 10th, 17th, 5th, 8th, 11th, 12th and 20th respectively, it was a good day as they all advanced to the next race for the championship.

“It was pretty solid,” Matt Kenseth said after finishing fifth. “We had good pit stops down here. We just lacked a little bit. Just couldn’t quite get it, but overall it was a good day for us.”

“It was just a solid day,” Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Fastenal Ford, said. “The car was actually pretty decent and everybody did a really good job. The pit crew did great and Jimmy did a great job with the car and that’s what we needed. We had a top-10 car and finished 11th, but I think if I would have done a little better job on the restarts we would have been better.”

“Yeah, there were a lot of anxious moments,” Edwards continued. “We were running 21st at one point and that’s tough.” We keep making small gains and getting the opportunity to be put back in the same position as the guys in front of us is a huge opportunity for us.”

“I just want to make the most of it.”

But for AJ Allmendinger, Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle, and Aric Almirola, however, it was the end of the line as they were eliminated from Chase contention.

“This is the way it’s gone all season,” Greg Biffle, driver of the No. 16 3M/Post-It Ford, said after the race. “We’re just searching for speed and struggled all day today. We’ve worked hard trying to fix our problems, but it just hasn’t come together yet.”

“It’s frustrating because part of you wants to just pull it and put it in the garage and the other half is racing as hard as you can to get in the Chase,” Biffle continued. “It’s pretty frustrating. I’ve won races my whole career, but to be struggling like this all year is disappointing at best.”

“It just didn’t work out for us,” Aric Almirola, behind the wheel of the No. 43 Nathan’s Famous Ford Fusion, said. “I hate it. We picked a bad day to run the way we did and we can’t blame anybody but ourselves. My car didn’t have any grip. You can’t go fast without grip.”

    “Right now it’s pretty disappointing.”

Kyle Larson was the highest finishing rookie again, finishing sixth in his No. 42 Target Chevrolet.

“Yeah, I’d be really happy about my three races in this round if I was in the Chase,” Larson said. “But yeah, it was a really good finish for us.”

“We were terrible the first two runs. It was all I could do to not crash the case, I was so loose,” Larson continued. “I was really hanging on and Shine (crew chief) and everybody did a really good job to make huge adjustments to get the Target Chevy fast. Once we did, we were a top-10 car immediately and just kept working on it and got better and better.”

“Hopefully we can keep these top-10s rolling.”

Erik Jones Beats the Odds With Truck Series Win at Las Vegas

Erik Jones took the lead from teammate Darrell Wallace Jr. with 14 laps to go in his No. 51 ToyotaCare Tundra scoring his second victory of the season in the Rhino Linings 350 at Las Vegas.

It is the 18-year-old Jones’ third career win in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and Kyle Busch Motorsport’s first win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The victory is also KBM’s 10th win in 17 races this season.

“That was a blast,” Jones said after the race. “Getting a win on a mile-and-half (track), that’s awesome. I couldn’t ask for any more than this right here. I wanted to win here so bad.”

Darrell Wallace Jr. led the most laps with 84 in his No. 54 Toyota but was unable to catch his teammate in the closing laps, finishing second. It was his fifth second place finish of the 2014 season.

“Just got beat, flat out,” said a disappointed Wallace Jr. “Congrats to the 51 (Jones), hate that it’s not the 54. We need a win. (It’s) frustrating, I hate finishing second so bad. Thanks to my guys though. I thought it was ours. Another KBM dominance for sure. We’ll go on to Talladega and try to finish one spot better.”

Current points leader Matt Crafton, finished in third place and extended his points lead to 19 over Johnny Sauter, who finished 14th.

Timothy Peters, last year’s race winner at this track, led 26 laps but had to settle for a fourth place finish in Saturday night’s race. Brian Ickler finished in the fifth position.

Ryan Blaney, who started on the pole, is third in the points standings (-27) followed by Darrell Wallace Jr. in fourth (-33) and Joey Coulter in fifth place (-82).

The Camping World Truck Series will take a three week break but returns Saturday, October 18 at Talladega Superspeedway.

  • Kyle Busch Scores a Nationwide Fiver at the Monster Mile

Kyle Busch Scores a Nationwide Fiver at the Monster Mile

Kyle Busch behind the wheel of the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota, scored his fifth Nationwide season win to take the 29th Annual Dover 200 at the Monster Mile. And with that fiver, he also broke a tie with Joey Logano to become the all-time win leader at Dover.

“Our day was really good,” Busch said. “We were a little skeptical of it yesterday but the guys did a good job of making adjustments for today.”

“From the start of the green flag, we had a good race,” Busch continued. “I was biding my time early and we missed that first wreck. We were able to pit, get out front and set sail from there.”

“It was nice to put together a good run and hopefully carry that into tomorrow.”

Joey Logano, who led laps early in the race, finished second in his No. 22 Hertz Ford. This was his ninth top-10 finish at Dover and his eighth top-10 finish for the season.

“The first half of the race went perfect and we were able to go out there and lead a lot of laps and be very, very fast,” Logano said. “But as the race went, we put four tires on and lost the lead. Our car was really tight from there on out. I’m not really sure what happened but we will try to figure it out.”

“We just stayed tight there the last run,” Logano continued. “Overall, it’s second but we come here and expect to win. We began the race well but we lost the handle.”

Chase Elliott, in the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet, finished third and also was the highest finishing rookie. Elliott did, however have his share of adversity, getting into a wreck early and suffering some damage that hindered his progress forward.

“I’m proud and frustrated at the same time,” Elliott said. “We had a super-fast car from the get-go.”

“We were just biding our time that first run,” Elliott continued. “I made a mistake following those guys way too closely and that was completely my fault. I drove ourselves into a wreck and then we couldn’t get back up to the front.”

“We had a really good car from the drop of the green and the guys did a fantastic job getting it taped back up in a way that the fender wasn’t going to fly apart on us.”

“We tried to battle as hard as we could but it just wasn’t enough.”

Chris Buescher, driving the No. 60 Roush Performance Parts Ford, finished fourth as the second highest finishing rookie.

“That was a lot of fun,” Buescher said. “We were really good on pit road and nice and consistent. Every week you have to get better and our consistency has been there. This is our best finish since Mid-Ohio.”

Elliott Sadler, behind the wheel of the No. 11 SportClips Toyota, rounded out the top five, a position that he had not been in for quite some time.

“It’s been too long for this race team,” Sadler said. “We made a lot of adjustments today. Top five at Dover is the best we’ve ran here.”

Kyle Larson overcame two penalties, one for leaving the pit box with equipment and the other for speeding, came back to finish sixth in his No. 42 Cartwheel by Target Chevrolet.

Another driver that had a world of trouble was Brendan Gaughan. The driver of the No. 62 South Point Chevrolet had a rear suspension issue, sending him to the garage and putting him nine laps down to finish 28th.

With his third place finish, Chase Elliott maintained his lead in the championship point standings, now 26 points ahead of teammate Regan Smith.

  • Kevin Harvick Freaky Fast Yet Again to Score Monster Mile Pole

Kevin Harvick Freaky Fast Yet Again to Score Monster Mile Pole

After a celebratory hug from son Keelan, Kevin Harvick proved that he was ‘freaky fast’ again in his No. 4 Budweiser Chevrolet, scoring the pole for the AAA 400 at the Monster Mile with a speed of 162.933 mph and a time of 22.095 seconds.

This was his first pole at the Monster Mile but the seventh pole of the season. He has six poles combined in his entire career prior to 2014.

“Just really proud of my guys,” Harvick said. “There’s a lot going on with the Chase and they just keep bringing fast cars to the race track. Hopefully tomorrow we can evolve a little bit more. It’s a lot of fun when you unload well.”

“This used to be a huge hurdle for us,” Harvick continued. “We’ve had some bad days here. It’s been a long time but over the last three or four years this has been a good race track for us, been enjoyable and a lot of fun to drive.”

“We just have to keep doing what we’re doing.”

Kyle Busch, behind the wheel of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota, was second in qualifying with a speed of 162.404 mph and a time of 22.167 seconds, followed by Denny Hamlin in the No. 11 FedEx Freight Toyota, in the third starting spot, with a speed of 162.250 mph and a time of 22.188 seconds.

“So far, so good,” Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota, said. “This was a good opportunity to start up front here at Dover. I look forward to this weekend’s chance to bring Interstate Batteries back to Victory Lane.”

This was Busch’s 14th top-10 start of 2014 and his 11th in 20 races at Dover.

Although Hamlin was pleased with his third place starting position, he acknowledged that he will be driving the race of his life hoping to avoid elimination from the Chase competition.

“Obviously excited to start off on a good foot and a good position to start the race,” Hamlin said. “But this is going to be the hardest race that I’m ever going to drive.”

“I have to be as aggressive as I can but this is the most important race of my career at this point. We’ve got to get the job done and I have to do my part to make sure that I’m successful.”

“If we’re going to live to race another day, we have to get past this race.”

While Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski qualified fourth in his No. 2 Wurth Ford and was the highest Ford qualifier, his teammate Joey Logano only secured the sixteenth starting spot.

“We’re strong,” Keselowski said. “The 4 car is a little bit better. We seem to be right there with everyone else or maybe just a touch better, but we’ll keep working on it. We’ve got tomorrow’s practice and we’ve got a good starting spot for Sunday. It’s not a pole, but you can’t always get poles. Still, it’s something to be proud of.”

“We just didn’t go fast enough, I don’t know,” Logano, driver of the No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford said. “We unloaded pretty far off today and we spent a lot of time on race trim. We got started behind the eight-ball and trying to make that up and didn’t put a great effort into qualifying today, so we’re gonna start a little further toward the back. We’ll just work on it tomorrow and try to make our Shell/Pennzoil Fusion a little better.”

Jamie McMurray, fresh off his streak of three consecutive top-10 runs, rounded out the top-five qualifiers, with a speed of 161.936 mph in his No. 1 McDonalds Chevrolet.

“I really didn’t even know we had advanced to round two after the initial round,” Big Mac said. “We just barely got in, and made some good changes. The car was really loose on that second run. So I was surprised that I ran quicker than I did the first time. The McDonalds Chevy has been really good in race trim, so I am really excited that we qualified well. This is a tough place to pass at. Good pit selection and good starting spot, so off to a good start for the weekend.”

Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 42 Target Chevrolet, qualified seventh, scoring the top starting rookie spot as par for the course.

“I was hoping for a little bit more in qualifying,” Larson said. “We were pretty tight through one and two, which is where we gave up most of our time. Seventh is still not bad. We can get a good pit stall and hopefully have a good race on Sunday.”

Probably the most disappointed of all of the Chase contenders was AJ Allmendinger, who qualified 28th in his No. 47 Hungry Jack/ACME Chevrolet.

“It sucked,” Dinger said of his qualifying effort. “We are just not fast enough.”

  • Brendan Gaughan Powers his way to the Win at Kentucky Speedway

Brendan Gaughan Powers his way to the Win at Kentucky Speedway

Brendan Gaughan won his second Nationwide Series race of the 2014 season passing Chase Elliott and teammate Ty Dillon for the lead late in the VisitMyrtleBeach.com 300 at the Kentucky Speedway  Saturday night. His other victory was at Road America in June. Brian Scott finished second with Dillon finishing third making a 1-2-3 sweep for Richard Childress Racing. Elliott finished fourth and Regan Smith rounded out the top five.

Dillon was the class of the field all night leading 155 of the 200 lap race. Elliott had gained the lead from Dillon on lap 174 when Eric McClure hit the wall bringing out the caution flag. Two caution periods, one for Sam Hornish Jr., driving the No.54 Kyle Busch Motorsports entry, who hit the wall after contact with Regan Smith, and the second for debris, closed up the field with less than 20 laps to go. On the last restart, when Elliott and Dillon were battling for the lead, Gaughan pounced, passing them both and pulled away.

“I love restarts, and when that caution came out and we were fourth, I got really excited because I knew we were on the outside and thought we had a good group, and we did,” said Gaughan.”  You have to choose a teammate, so I chose Ty and pushed him down the back straightaway, and he had a launch into turn three, but it was just too much. When they got side by side and I’ve been doing this a long time and an area opened up just enough, I couldn’t believe we were able to take off like that.”

Scott said after the race, “I thought it was the right call to take four tires at the end. I restarted sixth and got a good restart and got up to fourth and I thought we were going to win this race. But, unfortunately, we didn’t get any long runs and our Shore Lodge Camaro was a little too tight.”

Dillon clearly disappointed after his dominant performance said, “I spun the tires a bit there at the end and it really cost us. Elliott was able to get a nose ahead of us there before that last caution came out, and that gave our teammate with four tires a chance to get up there and take the win.”

“It was really good, hard racing there at the end,” Dillon continued. “These cars are under-powered and aero becomes a big deal, and on the restarts, when you get the side draft on those guys and the guy behind you get such a great run, it’s hard to hold them both of them off.”

The four cautions over the last 31 laps had significant impact on the outcome of the race but it was Gaughan’s restart and power move that won him the race.

Elliott retains the series lead by 20 points over Regan Smith. Ty Dillon, (-38), Brian Scott (-55) and Elliott Sadler (-51) round out the top five.

The Nationwide Series travels to Dover International Speedway September 27. The race is scheduled for 3:30 pm ET and will be televised on ESPN2.

Custer Makes His Stand – Youngest Winner in NASCAR

Cole Custer out dueled some veterans of the Camping World Truck Series on a restart with four laps remaining to become the youngest victor in a NASCAR touring series. Custer is 16 years, 7 months and 28 days old and on this day his truck was the class of the field.  Late in the race, on lap 147 of the 175 lap race, a caution was called when the No. 63  truck of Jr. Heffner was helped into the wall by the No. 9 truck of Brennan Newberry.

Custer was called into the pits for tires and fuel while the No. 51 truck of Erik Jones stayed out. Many other trucks including Matt Crafton only took two tires while Custer’s crew chief, Joe Shear Jr., opted to put four fresh tires on the dominant truck of the day. There were several more caution periods and Custer closed in on the leaders until the pinnacle restart with four to go. With Crafton leading and Custer lining up right next to him it appeared that Crafton spun his tires on the restart. As he and Custer went into turn one, Bubba Wallace dove low making it three-wide and Custer came out with the lead, Wallace in second and Crafton in third and that was how they finished. Johnny Sauter came in fourth and John Hunter Nemecheck rounded out the top five.

Custer started on the pole and led the majority of the race. “I was really worried,” Custer said in victory lane.” It was so hard to pass, even lappers. I couldn’t believe we got through all of those guys. The air affected it so much. We had some great restarts, which helped us a lot. I can’t believe it’s happening right now.”

Sitting on the pit road wall after the race Crafton was clearly unhappy with himself. “Started at the back, drove to the front, got beat at the end,” Crafton said.” I spun the tires and couldn’t get it in fourth gear, to be totally honest. Once I spun the tires, I was screwed right there. Then I couldn’t get it in gear, and everybody had a run on me. My bad.” Crafton started at the back due to reported electrical problems with his truck during qualifying.

Wallace, who finished third, said after the race, “Once again I would have had to wreck him to get by him. I think I gave it up a little too much into (turn) three  — when he got clear, could have got to him on the bumper.  Four tires prevailed for him (Cole Custer).  So, congratulations to Cole.  I told him he’d get the pole.  The kid is always fast so it’s always cool to see a new winner. I just hate a Toyota wasn’t in victory lane. Our Toyota Care Tundra was okay. We were a top-three truck — a top-five truck at the beginning of the race. Just couldn’t get off the corner, but we saw some stuff late in the race. We’ll go on to Las Vegas. Proud of my guys. They never gave up. Pit stops were incredible. Gained us some spots, just come up one spot short. I’m pumped. I’m all good. We’ll go on to Vegas with our Toyota Care Tundra and be ready to win.”

Custer was asked if he believed this was happening and he replied, “I’ve been coming since I was really young. Really young, I just can’t believe it.”
