Harvick win the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas

Kevin Harvick swept the weekend at Kansas Speedway and won the caution filled Hollywood Casino 400 from the pole. The victory was Harvick’s 22nd career victory and his third victory in 2013. This is his first victory at Kansas Speedway.  “It was an interesting weekend with everyone battling tires and the track. It was like driving on a razor blade and I said we have to find consistency. It was like driving two different cars – one out front and no one else even close and a different one back in traffic,” said Harvick.

After having to go to a back up car and starting in the rear, Kurt Busch came back to take second. Busch would have an exchange with third place finisher Jeff Gordon. Both competitors discussed the situation and came away with an understanding of the situation according to Jeff Gordon. Busch said, ” Today is a small victory in my own mind. This was the last track I needed a top-5 at and we got that today.”

Third place finisher Jeff Gordon said, “We had a great car all day. These surfaces are too smooth. It doesn’t dissipate the heat. Goodyear is at the mercy of the track. But to me it’s the surface. We are paving these tracks like we pave new highway and this isn’t a highway, it’s a racetrack.”

Tires were the story of the day. With the new tire cording and blistering, the race teams struggled to find consistency and grip on the newly repaved racetrack.

Kyle Busch’s curse at Kansas continued. Busch who started in the rear in a backup car was wrecked three times in one race. Busch commented, “The race track is the worst race track I’ve ever driven on. The tires are the worst tires I’ve ever driven on and track position is everything. You can’t do anything unless you’re out front. You get back in traffic — Kevin Harvick couldn’t pass me — he led the first 80 laps of the race, so I’d say it’s pretty pathetic.”

The race had 15 cautions for 71 laps and there were 24 lead changes among 12 drivers. Harvick crossed the start finish line 1.140 seconds ahead of Kurt Busch.

Matt Kenseth took the points lead over Jimmie Johnson, who finished the race on 7 cylinders.

  • Kenseth wins the Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas

Kenseth wins the Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas

The NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Kansas Lottery 300 was a caution filled 200 lap race that ended with Matt Kenseth in victory lane.

This victory makes Kenseth sixth on the all time series win list.  This was also his first victory in seven races at Kansas Speedway.

“When we got here yesterday we had a lot of speed right off the truck and I told Matt I thought it was the best car we had had all year. We had a fast car all the way through the race. We lost a lot of track position but it all worked out in the end.”

Paul Menard finished second, capturing his fifth top-10 finish in eight races at Kansas and his third top-10 finish in 2013.

Regan Smith finished third and captured his first top-10 at Kansas.

The drivers struggled with the new tires with everything from excessive wear to lack of grip. Austin Dillon reported tires giving up and blistering. Despite his tire issues, Dillon was able to finish sixth and take over the series points lead by eight points over Sam Hornish Jr.

After leading most of the race, Regan Smith would lose the lead on a late round of pit stops and come back to finish third.

A late race altercation between Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski while both were racing for the runner up spot, led Keselowski to issue a warning to Busch regarding tomorrow’s Sprint Cup race. Keselowski stated, “I got wrecked by a dirty driver. There is no other way of putting it. He is cool with that. I have raced him really cool over the last year to be respectful to him and try to repair our relationship. He has a lot more to lose than we do. That is one of the advantages to not being in the chase.”

Busch also had a run in with Trevor Bayne which cost Bayne numerous spots in the running order. Bayne remarked, “It was really crazy out there. We had a super fast car and I think we ran out of fuel there. I messed up on pit road and sped the last segment and got a penalty and Mike made great strategy to get up back up there then we went in one and two and got wrecked by the 54. He sent me up the race track. I think he got loose and slid up. It almost happened with me and the 18 when we were leading. It is unfortunate for our team to have this fast of a race car and not be able to capitalize. I am sure he was probably frustrated by that but I think it was just hard racing.”

    Final Finishing order:

    1) Matt Kenseth 2) Paul Menard 3) Regan Smith 4) Kyle Busch 5) Justin Allgaier 6) Austin Dillon 7) Parker Kligerman 8) Brad Sweet 9) Trevor Bayne 10) Elliott Sadler 11) Alex Bowman 12) Michael Annett 13) Mike Bliss 14) Travis Pastrana 15) James Buescher 16) Chris Buescher 17) Sam Hornish Jr 18) Brian Scott 19) Dakoda Armstrong 20) Nelson Piquet Jr 21) Ryan Sieg 22)  Landon Cassill 23) Bryan Silas 24) Johanna Long 25) Joe Nemechek 26) Jennifer Jo Cobb 27) Eric McClure 28) Brad Keselowski 29) Brian Vickers 30) Kyle Larson 31) Mike Wallace 32) Ken Butler 33) TJ Bell 34) Carl Long 35) Hal Martin 37) Blake Koch 38) J.J. Yeley 39) Josh Wise 40) Jeff Green

  • Harvick captures the Hollywood Casino 400 pole at Kansas

Harvick captures the Hollywood Casino 400 pole at Kansas

As the sun went down over the Kansas Speedway qualifying for the fourth race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup Series began. Kevin Harvick would take the pole with a lap of 28.796 seconds or 187.526 mph.

The stories of the day were varied although the action was pretty calm with drivers fighting the new tires brought to the track by Goodyear. They included a scare for Jimmie Johnson and the 48 team when a spin and a puff of smoke took Johnson to the garage and the attention of Chad Knaus.

Mark Martin and Tony Stewart’s Bass Pro Shops number 14 team struggled to find the handle and speed. Clint Bowyer searched in vain for speed.

But there were good stories too, Ricky Stenhouse Jr would take the outside pole. Denny Hamlin would break through with a tenth place starting spot. Hometown boy Carl Edwards would take home ninth.

The pole position was Harvick’s first in 254 races. “When you when that few poles you can remember what happens to you on that day. The car was really fast right off the truck. We went back to where we started and we had a really good qualifying run.”

Starting Order for the Hollywood Casino 400: 1) Kevin Harvick 2) Ricky Stenhouse Jr. 3) Jimmie Johnson 4) Brad Keselowski 5) Joey Logano 6) Dale Earnhardt Jr. 7) Matt Kenseth 8) Paul Menard 9) Carl Edwards 10) Denny Hamlin 11) Brian Vickers 12) Juan Pablo Montoya 13) Martin Truex Jr. 14) Jeff Gordon 15) Kasey Kahne 16) Jeff Burton 17) Ryan Newman 18) Kyle Busch 19) Kurt Busch 20) Aric Almirola 21) Justin Allgaier 22) Clint Bowyer 23) Mark Martin 24) Jamie McMurray 25) Marcos Ambrose 26) Greg Biffle 27) David Reutimann 28) A.J. • Johnson Earns Record Breaking Win at Dover

Johnson Earns Record Breaking Win at Dover

DOVER, Del. – Jimmie Johnson has already written a few pages in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series history book and Sunday afternoon at Dover in the AAA 400 he added one more.

Johnson won for the eighth time at the Monster Mile to take first place on the all-time win’s list, breaking a tie with Bobby Allison and Richard Petty. It was Johnson’s fifth win of the season, his first since Daytona in July, and 65th of his career. He held off a hard charging and hungry teammate in Dale Earnhardt Jr.

“Two [tires] worked good for us in practice. And believe me; I wanted to see four tires line up in the fourth or fifth row. When they lined up right behind me, I thought I was going to have my hands full,” Johnson said about the series of events. “And I really did. Junior drove a whale of a race and track position really gave me the advantage I needed to hold him off.”

Earnhardt Jr. started the day on the pole and led 77 laps but didn’t have enough for Johnson at the end. Even after lining up first among those off pit road with four tires on the final pit stop. Johnson led a race high 243 of 400 laps to clinch the record.

“It’s incredible. To do anything that Bobby or Richard has done is quite an accomplishment,” Johnson said. “We’ve a few sneak away from us here, too, over the years. I’m just so happy to get that done and be the sole leader of race wins here. It’s a very special day.”

The win also moved Johnson to second in points, only eight markers behind Matt Kenseth who finished seventh. Kenseth led early as he looked for his third straight win to open the Chase but lost the handling of his car late. The same affected his teammate, Kyle Busch, who finished fifth and slipped to third in points.

There were only four cautions on the day – three for debris and one for fluid from Brad Keselowski’s car – which allowed for long green flag runs and green flag pit stops. Earnhardt Jr. missed pit road during one and came in slow on another, costing him plenty of time on track both occasions. He overcame those problems for second place but found no solace in it afterwards.

“I’ll be honest with you, it sucks to lose regardless of who wins. It’s probably harder to run second than it is fifth or tenth,” he said afterwards. “When you have a car like we had today, you don’t get good cars every week, you like to capitalize.”

Joey Logano finished third and Jeff Gordon fourth to move to fifth in points and tied with Kevin Harvick.

The NSCS heads to Kansas next weekend where Kenseth won earlier this season. Seven races remain in the NSCS season.

  • Logano Continues Nationwide Winning Streak at Dover

Logano Continues Nationwide Winning Streak at Dover

DOVER, Del. – Joey Logano not only tamed the Monster Mile again, he again dominated it.

Logano won his fourth consecutive Nationwide Series race at Dover on Saturday afternoon after leading a race high 106 of 200 laps in the 5-hour ENERGY 200 benefiting Living Beyond Breast Cancer. He took the lead for the final time with 59 laps to go, moving past Kyle Busch who had inherited the lead while using a different pit strategy. It was the winning pass for Logano, who cruised to a 14 second victory over rookie Kyle Larson.

“We started the race too loose and they went for it. These Nationwide races are short. You’ve got to make big swings real early and I feel like Jeremy [Bullins, crew chief] and I worked enough together now that when I say loose and how loose he kind of knows how much it is and he made big swings on this thing and got it pretty close. Then we needed one more stop to just kind of fine tune it,” said Logano on his record day.

“It’s just really cool to get four-in-a-row here at Dover. That’s pretty awesome. It’s been my favorite racetrack ever since I started here, yes, even when I barrel-rolled down the back straightaway, it’s still my favorite place, and I think we showed that today. Hopefully my Shell / Pennzoil Ford tomorrow is just as fast as this one. If that’s the case, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

As it’s been for most of the 2013 NNS season, Logano and Busch were the class of the field. The two led all but five laps but Busch was done in by a different pit cycle. When the first caution of the race flew on lap 26 he stayed on track with the lead while the rest of the leaders, including Logano, came down pit road.

Busch then had to give up the lead on lap 87 for his first stop before retaking it when the rest of the field made their second and final stops. After coming down pit road with 24 laps to go he finished eighth.

Kevin Harvick, Brian Vickers and Elliott Sadler were the top five. Meanwhile, point leader Sam Hornish Jr. who entered the day with a 15 point lead on Austin Dillon, wasn’t able to turn his second starting position into a top five finish. Hornish struggled on Saturday, falling a lap down early before being caught speeding on pit road and losing another lap.

He finished 17th and now has only a four point advantage with five races remaining. Dillon finished sixth while Sadler moved to third in points after his top five finish.

“You can’t make one bad call and then have the driver speed on pit road and not give something up. We’ll talk about it and try to figure out how to not get ourselves in that position again,” Hornish said afterwards about the decision for two tires instead of four. “I knew we were kind of sunk at that point, but I think we still could have got out of it with a 10th or 12th place finish if I didn’t speed on pit road, but we weren’t gonna win with the strategy we had today.”

Logano’s victory was the 11th for the 22 car this season. His victory was also the first time a driver had won four consecutive NNS races at Dover while the Penske team extended their owner’s championship lead to 34 on the Joe Gibbs Racing 54 car.

“I keep telling everybody when you think about Roger Penske and his history, it’s pretty amazing to think there’s something he hasn’t won, so, for me, it’s a privilege and an honor to be part of the team tasked with that goal,” said Bullins on trying to win the owner’s title.

“So far, so good. We’ve got five weeks to go and we just got to keep pushing forward and hopefully we can finish strong and pull that off. It would be very special to fulfill that last spot in his trophy case because it’s pretty impressive to start with.”

The race featured only two cautions and went 106 green flag laps to the finish. The longest stretch in NNS history. In post race inspection, the 22 car failed when it was found to be too low on both sides in the front. NASCAR said they will look at it first thing next week.

  • Matt Kenseth Wins at New Hampshire

Matt Kenseth Wins at New Hampshire

Matt Kenseth is the man to beat in the 2013; there is no doubt about that. He has now won both chase races with his teammate, Kyle Busch finishing 2nd just like Chicagoland last weekend. This is his 7th win of the season and the 31st of his career. Matt started 9th and wasn’t looked at as a favorite to win the race and wasn’t a factor until after the halfway point. He’s never gone to victory lane at New Hampshire until now and it just so happened to be his 500th career start as well.

The race kicked off with Ryan Newman on pole but he would quickly be overtaken by a hard-charging Kasey Kahne. Kasey led until the first caution of the day flew courtesy of Josh Wise going for a spin in turn 4. On the restart, Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing teammates Juan Pablo Montoya and Jamie McMurray made contact sending the No.1 spinning. Jamie kept it off the wall though and the car was fine until rookie Kevin Swindell ran into the back of him. McMurray rebounded and finished a solid 5th with a damaged rear end.

The next incident involved Bobby Labonte and David Gilliland on the front stretch. Labonte’s car was destroyed while Gilliland suffered some front end damage during the crash. Martin Truex Jr. led a bunch of laps before Jeff Gordon took control of the event. A rare pit road mistake by the 4-time champ ruined his race as he brought home a disappointing 15th place finish.

Late in the race, Kasey Kahne got loose underneath Brian Vickers and smacked the inside wall. He was very upset and didn’t have anything to say when he left the infield care center. Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a fantastic restart with 30 to go and rocketed up to 2nd but he gave it all back within a few laps. It came down to a duel between JGR teammates Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch with the 2003 NSCS champion prevailing as Kyle desperately tried to get to him. Track position was key today and when you didn’t have it, you didn’t stand a chance.

The race featured eleven different leaders, seven cautions and nineteen lead changes. 28 cars finished on the lead lap and five failed to finish. Kenseth, (Kyle) Busch and Johnson have separated themselves from the rest of the chase field and are certainly living up to all the hype surrounding their chase chances. Matt has a 14pt lead over teammate Kyle and Jimmie Johnson faces a 18pt deficit. There’s a noticeable gap back to 4th place Carl Edwards who sits 36pts back. 10th on back are a full race’s worth of points behind the leader and Kasey Kahne is now last in the chase; 71pts back of Kenseth.

  • Ryan Blaney takes the win in the Kentucky 300

Ryan Blaney takes the win in the Kentucky 300

19 year old Camping World Truck Series regular, Ryan Blaney puts on an impressive performance driving the No. 22 Discount Tires Ford in the Kentucky 300 at Kentucky Speedway.  Blaney led 96 laps en route to victory. He also became the fourth different driver to win in the car this season and the tenth win of the season for the No. 22.

Blaney had to hold off strong challenges from his Penske teammate Sam Hornish Jr and Richard Childress Racing driver, Austin Dillon. At one point on a restart, Hornish and Blaney were side by side when Hornish got loose and almost took out both cars. Hornish, however, pulled off an amazing save and only lost a few positions.

A similar situation happened with Dillon as well, with Dillon getting loose under the No.22, he too was able to save the car. Blaney never faltered, held off all challenges and looked like a seasoned veteran while doing so. He never seemed to get rattled under the pressure.

When asked about the close calls Blaney responded, “The way the restart rule is now, you never know what’s going to happen. How big of a shove someone is going to give somebody, I was really worried on that last restart when the 33 was behind Austin there, their teammates and I thought they were going to push right passed me but I don’t think the 33 got a great restart. But yeah it was very tough to hang on the bottom in one and two, I think there were some water spots down there that definitely made it worse, and then you got a gut hanging on your outside that just gets you aero loose so there a couple hairy moments there but luckily we could … had a good enough car that to be at that point where it didn’t hurt us when they got loose under us.”

The win was Blaney’s first in 15 Nationwide Series starts and also another step toward the owner’s championship for the No.22. The team now holds a 23 point lead over the Joe Gibbs Racing entry No. 54.

The next stop for the series is the 5-Hour Energy 200 at Dover International Raceway on September 28.

  • Kyle Busch holds Brad Keselowski off to win EnjoyIllinois.com 225 at Chicagoland Speedway

Kyle Busch holds Brad Keselowski off to win EnjoyIllinois.com 225 at Chicagoland Speedway

With a pass on Brad Keselowski with 23 laps to go, Kyle Busch would take the lead and hold Keselowski off to win the EnjoyIllinois.com 225 at Chicagoland Speedway on Friday night. It marks Busch’s fourth win of the season and seventh top 10 in eight starts this year.

“That was tough,” Busch said of racing against Keselowski and Keselowski’s young teammate Ryan Blaney. “Brad and Ryan had some really good trucks today. Can’t say enough about this Dollar General Toyota tundra. We didn’t have the speed on the short run, but on the long run, we had as strong truck. Great win for this team. They really deserved it. Rudy and these guys worked hard in practice, tried some things that worked, other things that didn’t work.”

Jeb Burton led early though for most of the race, it was Busch, Keselowski and Blaney trading the lead back and forth. Their battle for the lead at the front allowed NASCAR to set a new record for the most passes for the lead made under green flag conditions at 50.

Keselowski finished second for his third top 10 finish of the year. As the truck owner looks for his truck win, he has now finished second on five different occasions. Keselowski had been closing on Busch in the final laps, though wasn’t able to find a way by.

“It was great,” Keselowski said of the racing with Busch and Blaney. “I hope it was a thrill to watch. That was the most fun you can have finishing second. The guys did an awesome job – just came up a little short there. Finally came in there at the end and just needed a couple more laps there.”

Keselowski’s teammate Ryan Blaney finished third after running in the top five for most of the race.

“It was a lot of fun,” Blaney commented. “I hope everyone watching had a good time watching it. it was fun from where I was sitting. It was cool to work with Brad there. I thought we’d be able to keep the 51 behind us. I could push Brad out front but just never was able to pass Kyle there. Pretty cool having both BKR trucks in the top three not bad, just needed a little bit more.”

Points leader Matt Crafton continued his string of solid finishes with a fourth. It marks his 16th top 10 finish in the 16 races run so far this year.

“Just can’t thank these guys enough,” he said. “They worked so hard on things tonight. We were junk at the beginning. We’d go for about two or three laps and then it would go to like an anchor. We came in and made a ton of adjustments – tire pressure, wedge. It says a lot about this team and how strong they are.”

Crafton now leads Buescher by 41 points with six races remaining in the schedule.

“It was a blast,” Crafton said of the racing. “That is why the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is the best racing. If the fans can’t see that, then they’re crazy.”

Ty Dillon rounded out the top five.

“It was a long night for us,” he commented afterwards. “Our truck was definitely fast. The bottom was harsh on those restarts and we’d never get on the top for a restart so we lost some spots there. Once we got single file there, it was hard to pass. Wish we could’ve got on the top side for one of those restarts.”

John Wes Townley finished sixth followed by Austin Dillon. Austin was filling in for Brennan Newberry as Newberry was sidelined due to food poisoning. James Buescher finished eighth followed by Jeb Burton and Johnny Sauter.

Front runner Timothy Peters made hard contact with the wall with about 50 laps ago after trying to cut across Ryan Sieg’s bumper.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will be back in action later this month on September 28th at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Jeb Burton scores pole for EnjoyIllinois.com 225 at Chicagoland Speedway

In the qualifying session at Chicagoland Speedway on Friday afternoon, Jeb Burton would score the pole for the EnjoyIllinois.com 225. He would lap the track with a lap of 30.831 seconds behind the wheel of his No. 4 Arrowhead Chevrolet Silverado. It marks his fifth pole and 12th top 10 start this year.

“Heading to Chicago, my team and I couldn’t be more prepared to do it again,” Burton said. “We had a good truck in Kentucky and we’re taking it to Chicago hoping for similar results. I’ve been studying film a lot and even though we’ve never raced at this track, I feel like we’ll be a real contender come Friday night. There’s no time to slow down now.”

Ty Dillon qualified his truck second, about 94 hundreths off of Burton’s time. It marks his 12th top 10 start of the season.

“We’ve had some really fast trucks recently,” Dillon commented. “We just haven’t gotten the finishes that we deserved. Last weekend was a true testament to how hard this Bass Pro Shops team works each week. They could have given up after our alternator died, but they kept their heads up and kept digging. This is what a championship caliber team is made out of. We’re not out of this thing yet. We’ll keep working towards wins and those wins will get us closer to the championship.”

Burton’s Turner-Scott Motorsports teammate Miguel Paludo qualified third as he looks to better his eighth place finish from two years ago.

“I can’t wait to get to Chicagoland,” Paludo said. “I’m very proud to be representing BRANDT do Brasil. A lot of people think of Brazil as beaches and big cities, but agriculture and companies like BRANDT play a huge role in many parts of the country, including in the south where I grew up. Chicagoland is BRANDT’s home track and they always have a huge number of guests supporting our team at the racetrack. I don’t think there would be anything more special than to go to victory lane in front of BRANDT while representing my home country. I’ve run well in Chicago in the past and we’re bringing a chassis that we’ve been very successful with so far, so I think this is going to be a great weekend.”

Justin Lofton and Brendan Gaughan rounded out the top five. Joey Coulter qualified sixth, followed by his truck owner Kyle Busch in seventh and points leader Matt Crafton in eighth. Crafton has a 37 points lead over James Buescher as he looks for his 16th top 10 finish in 16 races this season.

“We’ve been up-and-down there — decent, but not great,” Crafton said. “But for sure, it’s time to take our game to another level this weekend.”

Buescher will start ninth as he looks for his second straight win following last week’s win at Iowa Speedway.

“I couldn’t be more excited about going back to Chicagoland Speedway, especially coming off a huge win for our Turner Scott Motorsports team last weekend at Iowa Speedway,” Buescher said. “I think it goes without saying that this style of track falls right into our wheelhouse, and I feel like our Rheem team will be able to come out of here with another solid finish and hopefully our third victory of the season.”

    Austin Dillon qualified 10th.

The EnjoyIllinois.com 225 will take the green flag tonight at Chicagoland Speedway at 8pm EST. Live coverage can seen on Fox Sports 1.
