Johnson secures victory and series points lead at Martinsville

[media-credit id=100 align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]Jimmie Johnson continues his dominance at Martinsville winning from the pole position in the Tums 500. Johnson led 193 laps en route to his seventh win and 19th top ten finish in just 22 starts at the legendary track. More importantly, he leaves Martinsville with a two point lead over Brad Keselowski.

“We just had a great race car. And I think we’ve also learned our lesson here in the past in not pitting late and that certainly came into play and we made the right decision there. I’m so torn with emotion right now with winning here; and I’m so happy to be in the point lead.” Johnson said.

Keselowski minimized the expected damage in the points standings today with a fantastic run from the 32nd starting spot. The Miller Lite driver worked his way through the field and was leading on restart near the end of the race but had to settle for a sixth place finish. The Penske team seemed pleased to come away with minimal loss considering Johnson’s amazing stats at this track.

Kyle Busch ends up with a hard fought second place, with Hendrick driver Kasey Kahne , who ran consistently in the top ten all day, taking the checkered in third spot.

Richard Petty Motorsports driver Aric Almirola drove his No. 43 Gwaltney Ford to a solid fourth place finish, . Aric said after the race, “That was a good run for us. Todd Parrott made a gutsy call there. We were horrible at the beginning of this race, I mean horrible. I don’t know how we didn’t go several laps down, but we fought hard all day.” The Richard Petty team recently swapped personnel between the No.43 of Almirloa, and the No.9 driven by Marcos Ambrose. The move seems to be paying off for Almirola, as he has consistently ran stronger than before the switch.

Chase contender Clint Bowyer shows that he is in this until the end with another strong effort in his No.15 Micheal Waltirp Racing Toyota. Bowyer led four times today for a total of 151 laps and wound up a respectable fifth at the end of the day. Bowyer leaves Martinsville with a 26 point deficit to leader Johnson.

The big loser today was Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin. Hamlin overcame a early penalty and fought his way back toward the front, but an electrical problem that caused the car to shut down and bring out a yellow on lap 393, sent him to the garage area for repairs where he lost 33 laps. Hamlin ended the day 34 laps off the pace and finished a dismal 33rd. Hamlin now trails Johnson by 49 points and would appear that once again late in the season, his championship hopes have ended.

It would appear we now have a two man race for the championship. Johnson and Keselowski have been the most consistent competitors in the seven Chase races so far. Bowyer and Kahne still have an outside chance, but will need the two leaders to stumble in the final three races. Based on the results this season that is not likely to happen.

Hamlin drives from rear of field to win the Kroger 200 at Martinsville

[media-credit id=100 align=”alignright” width=”224″][/media-credit]Virginia native Denny Hamlin takes the checkered flag after driving from the rear of the field. Hamlin qualified fifth, but missed the drivers meeting which was taking place after the start of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) practice. Hamlin stated in the media center after the race that he hated to miss it and cause the team to start at the back, but his first priority is the NSCS.

Hamlin was second with nine laps to go, with only leader Matt Crafton starting inside him. Crafton quickly jumped out front into turn one, Hamlin dropped in behind him and headed off to turn three. When entering three Crafton washed up slightly and Hamlin took advantage. Hamlin got into the rear of Crafton and pushed him up the track. After assuming the lead, Hamlin had no challengers. Crafton got caught on the outside line and fell to fourth after leading 33 laps.

“I love this place and, man, that’s short track racing at its finest. I gave the 88 (Matt Crafton) extra room on the outside. I went to the second lane and didn’t want to crowd him into (turn) one and tried to pass him on the outside and he shoved up into me and pushed me into the third groove. I just got back to him, so I didn’t wreck him or anything like that, you’re going have contact at Martinsville.” Hamlin said.

After the race Crafton was upset with Hamlin. He made his way down pit road to victory lane where he caught Hamlin still in his truck. Crafton stuck his head inside the No.51 truck and angrily pointed his finger in Hamlin’s face. I spoke with Crafton after the incident asking about the pass and the conversation, “Just got moved, that’s all there is to it. I mean it don’t take a whole lot of talent to run into the back of you, he’s a great race car driver but at least try to race me for a lap or two before you just run half a lap and run into the back me and drive through me.” As far as the conversation in the truck, “I told him what goes around comes around, he’ll race another truck race and he’ll remember what it feels like.”

Nelson Piquet Jr and Joey Coulter battled hard for second place beating and banging down the backstretch with Piquet coming out on top. Coulter had to settle for third. Regarding short track racing, Piquet commented, “..there is a learning curve around here and I am starting get better at it.” “The more I do it , the more I like it.”

The points standings also had a big shake up at Martinsville. Ty Dillon appeared to be in very good shape, running solidly in the top ten with second place James Buescher having problems and going a lap down early. Dillon had the opportunity to expand his points lead to a much more comfortable margin. The RCR driver’s fortune took a turn for the worse on lap 151, blowing a tire due to a melted bead, and tagging the wall in turn one. To make matters worse a broken sway bar joint would cause the No.3 to go 6 laps down and finish a dismal 28th place.

Buescher on the other hand got the free pass to get back on the lead lap and after a pit stop improved the truck dramatically. Buescher drove his No.31 Great Clips Chevy to a solid sixth place finish. He will leave Martinsville with a 21 point lead over Dillon and a 25 point lead over Peters with three races to go.

  • Peters captures the Kroger 200 pole at Martinsville Speedway

Peters captures the Kroger 200 pole at Martinsville Speedway

[media-credit id=100 align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]Timothy Peters who was born just down the road in Danville, Va, held on through two short rain delays to capture the pole for Saturdays Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway. Peters who finished fifth here in the spring turned a lap of 19.641 sec at 96.411 mph and bested Cup Series regular and spring race winner, Kevin Harvick by only .027secs. Brian Scott, Nelson Piquet Jr, and Denny Hamlin round out the top five. Peters currently sits third in the point standings, 26 markers out of the lead.

Championship points leader Ty Dillon will start sixth with James Buescher , who trails Dillon by only one point starting tenth. The left Talladega with the same margin that they entered with. Each driver will be trying to gain an advantage this weekend. A points battle this close is a recipe for great action on the flat half mile track.

Midway through qualifying a small rain shower dampened the track. Camping World Truck Series rookie, Caleb Holman was on track when the rain began. Holman’s Food Country Chevrolet slipped up the track in both corners, leading NASCAR officials to temporarily halt time trials. Luckily for Holman, officials gave him a second chance at qualifying, however, did require him to bolt on four new Goodyears. The team who had no sticker tires left, had to purchase four new tires in order to make a second qualifying attempt. The expensive purchase paid off as Holman qualified 29th easing their concerns about the fact that there were 41 trucks attempting to make into the 36 truck field.

Other notables: Denny Hamlin will start fifth in the Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota. Peters Red Horse Racing teammate, Parker Kligerman, who earned his first win at Talladega will take the green in 13th spot. Ryan Truex will make his Camping World Truck Series debut starting in the 17th spot.

Grant Enfinger, Brennan Newberry, Dennis Setzer, Jake Crum, and Todd Peck did not qualify for the event.

Johnson captures the pole for Sunday’s Tums 500 at Martinsville Speedway

[media-credit id=100 align=”alignright” width=”224″][/media-credit]Chase contender Jimmie Johnson sets fast lap in qualifying at Martinsville Speedway for the Sunday’s Tums 500. Johnson turned a lap of 97.598 MPH (19.402 SECS), edging out Brian Vickers who was fastest in practice and therefore was the last car to attempt qualifying.

Johnson waited patiently in the cockpit of his No.48 Lowes Chevrolet until Vickers completed his lap. Johnson said after, “The reason I stayed in the car, have you ever seen how many times a drivers does an interview, then gets knocked off the pole?” “I wasn’t going to do anything until it was over!” He also pointed, however, that he is definitely not superstitious.

Vickers missed the top spot by only .02 secs, still a great effort just a few hours after announcing that he would be back in the No.55 Micheal Waltrip Toyota for nine races again next season with Aarons as the sponsor for three of those races and Vickers noted they are looking for a partner for the other six.

Points leader Brad Keselowski, who holds a seven point lead over Johnson, will start 32nd Sunday at a track that he started seventh and finished ninth at in the spring. He will have a rather large hole to dig out of to maintain his lead on the championship standings.

“Certainly would like to qualify better and that’s at the forefront of my mind but I’d much rather race towards the front rather than qualify towards the front if I had to pick between the two. I feel like we’ll be capable of pulling that off once the race gets started.” Keselowski said.

“When the playoffs hit, it doesn’t matter what sport it is, crazy things happen. And with that being said, yeah, we come here thinking that we should be able to get some points on the 2 (Brad Keselowski), but you never know.” Johnson said.

There were four other Chase contenders in the top ten. Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, and Clint Bowyer placed fifth through eighth respectively.

Dale Earnhardt Jr returned to action this week and will take the green in 20th spot after being second fastest in practice. A team member noted the race setup is better than the qualifying setup and that they will race well on Sunday.

Kenseth wins the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas

[media-credit name=”Photo Credit: John Harrelson” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]It was a beautiful autumn day but it would be one that many hope to forget. With a record number of cautions for the track, and the most of any race this season, the Hollywood Casino 400 more resembled a survival expedition than a NASCAR race. Matt Kenseth’s Ford was hurt. It was bandaged. It was bruised. But when the track opened in front of it, it did what all thoroughbreds do it ran. It ran fast and it ran hard and it had enough left to make it all the way to the end and give Matt what will be one of his last victories with Jack Roush.

The race started off with promise and trepidation. The Nationwide race had a record number of cautions but at the end the track was very racey. It had a distinct 2 grooves and they were both very usable and at times and in places it was starting to get a third one in. The new track surface was rapidly maturing and going through growing pains. She was fast and smooth at times and she was wicked and slick at times. The tires Goodyear gave teams to tame her with she chewed up and spit out. It was the drivers that respected her and raced her with respect that ding or not came out on top.

One of the most courageous displays of championship ethic came from the 5 time champion, Jimmie Johnson’s Lowes Racing team. Jimmie took a hard crash on lap 137 in turn 4. The car was badly damaged and questions were raised could they get fuel in the car. Car owner Rick Hendrick said in his years in racing he had never seen such extensive surgery done so quickly on pit road. Johnson came back to finish in the top 10. Johnson said of his drive back to the front, “I had to get a look at it here. It’s pretty tore up. Definitely proud of this team and the fact that we never give up and continue to fight and try to get every point we can. I think yesterday’s Nationwide race showed that this thing isn’t over until the checkered flag falls and then again on Sunday. So all that said, I’m very proud but I was disappointed. I crashed the car. I spun out trying to get inside the 56. He bobbled a little in front of me and I thought that it was opportunity to jump in the gas real hard and when I did that, my car took off and I couldn’t catch it. All in all a good day but could have been a lot better. I think we could have been in victory lane and stretched some points on these guys.”

Martin Truex Jr again showed Toyota’s muscle finishing 2nd. “I’m happy with my team and my race car that we had all day. We really had to battle for this one. We got track position early — we got up towards the top five and we had a strong car, a little bit tight. The we got caught out by that caution deal and had to go all the way to the back. Just tough to pass. So, it was a battle all day long. Proud of the guys on the NAPA Toyota — they never gave up. Just kept digging all day long. That’s a good run for us, for sure. Just a little bit too tight there at the end there to run with Matt Kenseth. A good run and we’ll go on to Martinsville.”

Paul Menard held on to come home in third. He was the only non chase car in the top 10. “We kind of hit on something yesterday morning that we liked, thought was promising and stuck with it. Obviously running the Nationwide car on a new surface, we learned a lot about the tire pressures, what grooves come in. The second grooove came in a helluva lot better than I think anybody thought. You could make lap time and pass cars. Overall, just really happy with the weekend, the repave. The track came in real well and it’s just going to keep getting better. Real proud of my Menards guys” said Menard.

Kasey Kahne would bring the Farmer’s Insurance Chevrolet home in the 4th spot. But not without a scare. On the final caution while saving fuel, Kahne turned the engine off and it wouldn’t refire. When it finally did refire, he had lost several positions. But once the green flag flew again Kasey was able to climb back up to 4th. “It just wouldn’t re-fire. Disappointing. But we got through there. We had a good car; we got back to fourth. We passed a lot of cars there. The Farmers Insurance Chevrolet team did an awesome job. Great pit stops; great pit calls. A lot a tire and fuel strategy race throughout. Our guys did a really nice job. I had an awesome car. It was a little loose there taking off. It was a little loose there taking off. It was coming to me and getting good there at the end. We just weren’t close enough at that point in time. But still, a solid day.” remarked Kahne.

Tony Stewart had two incidents that threatened his day. The first was a pit penalty for leaving the pit box with equipment when his team didn’t get the wrench out of the car from a chassis adjustment. Stewart would have to come back in and it there would confusion and chaos that caused the owner/driver to remark, “You all can get your heads out of your a**’s anytime now.” Restarting at the tail end of the longest line Stewart would again make his charge. Only to spin and blow out 3 tires on the back stretch on lap 166. Stewart would nurse the car around to the pits with minimal damage. Again he would start at the end of the pack. Stewart would climb as far back up as second and finish 5th. “Our guys led by Steve Addington, they never gave up today. Really proud of the effort they gave. That’s how we won a championship last year, by never giving up. We probably had to pass more cars than anybody today, but that seems to be our M.O. We seem to have to do that every week. We’ve got a little bit of work to do, but we’re gaining on it. Proud of my guys. We worked with a little different package this week. We still didn’t get it right, but we got pretty close.” said Stewart.

The points leader Brad Keselowski came home in 8th spot. “I don’t even know how to explain it. I’m ready to go home and have a couple beers. It’s just been a long day and you know, everybody has been asking all season long where the cautions have been. Well they flew to Kansas and they’ve been hanging out here because there was a caution after caution and it seemed like every wreck that happened today happened right in front of me. So I’m glad to have survived the carnage and brought back a decent car, my Miller Lite Dodge, in great shape and dodged a bullet of a race. That is the only thing I can use to describe it. Whew! Just a tough day.”

Keselowski would extend his points lead to 7 over Jimmie Johnson heading into Martinsville. Martin Truex Jr, Tony Stewart, and Jeff Gordon all gained one spot in the points while race winner Matt Kenseth would gain 2 spots while Greg Biffle lost five spots.

The Hollywood Casino 400 was an exciting race. The new track was a bit like a moody teenager. It went through growing pains and temper tantrums it ate tires. It picked and played favorites. Obviously, Matt Kenseth suited her fancy today.

Kansas Shows A Halloween Face; Stenhouse Jr. wins the Kansas Lottery 300

[media-credit name=”Credit: John Harrelson/Getty Images” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]The Nationwide Series race at Kansas was a caution filled display of skills and patience. The freshly paved surface proved to be a wickedly fast, wickedly slick Halloween ghoul. The track management created a surface that after a couple of races and a winter of seasoning will be one of the best tracks in NASCAR. The trick was surviving to get there.

Brian Scott would be the first casualty with three spins, two of which were unassisted. The third he had contact with the wall removing him from the competition. Johanna Long would have an early day as would Dexter Stacey and Nur Ali.

The track provided us with visual example of aero effects. The faster the car the lighter the car is on its wheels. The air disruption as another car goes by lifts just enough to make the car literally wrecking loose.

The day would prove to be frustrating for Kyle Busch, after wrecking the primary car the back up proved to be an unpredictable monster that Busch struggled with all day. Coming back late to lead he ultimately run out of gas between 3 and 4 on the final lap.

Joey Logano would be involved with Ricky Stenhouse Jr making his day a very long one.  He got both laps back, and ended up finishing third.

Stenhouse Jr. would get back on the lead lap late in the race after the contact and come back to hold on to win as Busch ran out of fuel.

Points leader Sadler played a fuel strategy card late in the race. Sadler finished fourth and holds on to the series points lead by 6 points.

Young Ryan Blaney, was again impressive behind the wheel of the Penske Dodge. Blaney who started in the 27th position drove his way all the way up as high as second. But he also ran out of the gas.

The most improved performance in the series today came from Danica Patrick. Patrick climbed all the way up to the third place before having to pit for fuel and claiming a 10th place finish. Patrick’s confidence was very evident. Obviously the extra time in a car and the extra laps on the track paid off for her in a big way. It was refreshing to see her actually live up to the expectations placed on her. Hopefully she will remember to thank Greg Zipadelli and the SHR team as well as Ryan Pemberton and her JRM.

What began as a long drawn out race made a drastic turn at about halfway. The unpredictable monster that is the new Kansas showed her fickle nature. Stenhouse Jr. wins and Busch came up a ½ mile short. But in the end the winner was the fans and it is a victory that will last for years to come.

“Our Sam’s Club Mustang was fast this weekend. I didn’t see the win coming like this but we will take it. It was in front of a great crowd. I can’t say enough about the fans coming out and supporting us. It is a lot of fun to run in this series and especially to come to Kansas.” Stenhouse Jr. said.

Kahne shatters track record in qualifying at Kansas

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photography, Inc.” align=”alignright” width=”210″][/media-credit]Kasey Kahne broke the track record in qualifying on Friday at the newly repaved Kansas Speedway.  Kahne captured the pole with a lap of 191.360 mph for Sunday’s Sprint Cup Series Hollywood Casino 400.

“Our Farmers Insurance Chevrolet was awesome right there. It was great. I tried to get a little…I went into three, and felt like I could go wide open. So I went back to wide open, and then I started just chattering a little bit. So, I eased off the throttle and back down.” Kahne said.

Mark Martin qualified second with a lap of 191.238 mph, Clint Bowyer third, Kyle Busch fourth and Aric Almirola qualified fifth.

“The race track has got a lot of grip, but my car was kind of a handful there, and that’s entirely too long to go holding your breath. I’m used to only having to do it for one lap, so that was a long time.” Martin said.

Jimmie Johnson qualified seventh and points leader Brad Keselowski qualified 25th.

“We had a very solid lap with my Lowe’s Chevrolet. I think we are going to be strong on Sunday. We’ve been here so many days, I can’t figure out what day we are on, but we’re on

Friday, so come Sunday we’ll be great.” Johnson said.

Subbing for Dale Earnhardt Jr., Regan Smith qualified 40th.

Bowyer wins the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

[media-credit name=”Brad Keppel” align=”alignright” width=”230″][/media-credit]Clint Bowyer saved enough fuel over the final 56 laps to win Saturday nights NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“Who thought in a million years I’d walk into the situation I’ve walked into?” Bowyer said in victory lane.

Bowyer beat Denny Hamlin by .417 seconds in route to his third win of the season and the first in the chase.

Jimmie Johnson finished third, Greg Biffle fourth and Kyle Busch finished fifth.

Points leader Brad Keselowski, who ran out of fuel before his final pit stop, finished 11th and now holds a 7 point advantage over Johnson in the series standings.

“It’s blackjack, you’re not going to win every hand. When you got a bad deal you have to try not to have too many chips on the table.” Keselowski said.

Across the United States, homecoming is a traditionally celebrated at high schools and colleges through the month of October. Race weekend in Charlotte has the same feel. After all, the Charlotte, NC area is home to many of the teams and the fall race is an opportunity for the teams to gather with old friends and enjoy the weekend.

Charlotte found itself in the middle of homecoming, without it’s king. On Thursday, the news came that fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. would miss the next two races. The loss of Earnhardt felt like losing the star quarterback the day prior to the big game.

    Second String

Regan Smith was given the opportunity to drive the No.88 car during the absence of Earnhardt. Smith was the last to take the track on Thursday during the first practice session due to the changes that had to be made to the car. Watching Smith in his garage, I saw the image of a young man waiting anxiously to open his Christmas presents. It was clear that he was eager to go.

This was not a good weekend for the legion of 88 fans. Smith qualified 26th for the Bank of America 500 and quickly made his way through the field, moving into the top ten and appearing to be poised go further, when the engine blew. One was left to wonder what could have been.

“Needed one more stop and I think we would have had it dialed in and then just chased the weather from that point on. It’s disappointing. It’s a good team, it’s a good car and everybody at Hendrick Motorsports does a great job. I’m looking forward to next week.” Smith said.

    The Points

I would love to see Nascar tweak the points system used in the Chase. As it currently stands, it is extremely difficult for a team to recover from a bad weekend. Jeff Gordon is a prime example. Gordon suffered a bad day on the first race of the Chase in Chicago. Since then he has continued the solid run that he had the last six weeks of the season, which got him into the playoffs. However, the hole was too deep.

My recommendation is that during the Chase, the 12 drivers that are competing, are given points differently than the rest of the field. There would only be 12 points available, and only 3 points for a victory bonus. The Chase driver that has the worst finish in the event but would be scored the equivalent of twelfth versus, say 35th. This would allow drivers to dig their way out after a bad day and would hopefully have more drivers eligible going to Homestead.

    The Track

Every time I spend time at the track, I find interesting things and lots of interesting observations –

Grit Chips – Samples were given out of Jeff Foxworthy’s new Grit Chips. Chips made from grits. What else could a southern boy love? The chips are glouten free, for those that are limited in their diets, and are delicious. I was told they began shipping to stores this past week – look for them.

Entertainment – Charlotte Motor Speedway always does a great job with their pre-race entertainment and Saturday was no different. Big & Rich got the crowd fired up and it was interesting to see daredevil Nik Wallenda walk a tight rope from the top of the grandstands to victory lane. However, for me, honoring America’s finest is always a highlight of any weekend at the track. No thank you ever seems sufficient when you see those that have given so much, including the members of the Wounded Warriors project that played a big part in the pre-race.

Fans – The fans are what racing is all about. Sports like to claim thy have the best fans, but I would argue with any of them when it comes to Nascar. Race fans are like no other. They love to have a good time, but I find them very generous as well. I am always amazed when I am working around the track how many will offer a cold drink on hot day or something to eat. For those of us that do this – thank you to each and everyone one of you!

Logano wins the Dollar General 300 at Charlotte

[media-credit name=”Brad Keppel” align=”alignright” width=”257″][/media-credit]Joey Logano won the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Dollar General 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway for his eighth win of the season and the 1 7th NNS victory of his career.  Logano led a race-high 62 laps of 200 en route to his first NNS victory at the mile-and-a-half Charlotte oval.

“We had to work really hard for this.  The 22 (Brad Keselowski) was pretty good the mid-part of the race. He made some good adjustments, I found a new line and was able to make this GameStop Toyota fast enough to win. It was really cool to win a Dollar General race — that is one of our sponsors here at Joe Gibbs Racing. Cool to win that race for them.” Logano said.

Kevin Harvick finished second, Elliott Sadler third, Kyle Busch fourth and Denny Hamlin rounded out the top 5.

“Tonight, you just got back in traffic and couldn’t really do much. Mike Beam (crew chief) and the guys did a good job and everybody at KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports).  They’ve produced some good cars and we’ve been finishing up front. Top-three, top-four, top-five week in and week out. It’s all we had here in Charlotte.” Busch said.

Sadler started on the pole and led the field into turn 1 and cleared Austin Dillon, then the caution came out for the No.00 of Angela Cope smashed her radiator when everybody checked up on she ran into the back of another car.

The green flag waved on lap 10 with Sadler back in the lead. He got a okay restart but Stenhouse Jr. got up to second and tried to take the lead but Sadler shut the door. The second caution waved when the No.12 of Sam Hornish Jr. and the No.31 Justin Allgaier both got into each other. Hornish was trying to take the over the spot but got two high and forced Allgaier into the wall which sent Hornish Jr. into the wall. Hornish went to the garage while Allgaier tried to fix it on pit road. They found out they had two much damage and sent him behind the wall.

They went back to green on Lap 15 with Sadler leading it. Stenhouse Jr got a good restart and shot to the lead. Sadler was clearing Harvick for second while Stenhouse began to pull away. Stenhouse led for 35 laps but got in some lap traffic and Harvick took the lead. Sadler overtook Stenhouse Jr. as well.

Green Flag pit stops started to occur with the No.7 car of Danica Patrick. she got four tires and fuel and was away. all of the leaders came in on lap 55 with the No.33 car starting the cycle. Harvick said he was a tick tight, so they gave him a air pressure and four tires with fuel and he was away. His Teammate, Sadler, said he was mostly loose and need grip off the corner. He got a Air Pressure, along with four tires and fuel and was away. It was a very long pitstop for the No.2 team. Stenhouse went in and said he had no front turn and wanted four tires. They gave him that with fuel and tried to fix that with a round out of the right rear and was away.

Harvick took over the lead after pit stops cycled back. Sadler, who had the slow stop, fell back to 7th while Stenhouse Jr got passed by Brad Keselowski. Keselowski took over the lead from Harvick on lap 73.

The third Caution waved on lap 82 when the No.19 of Mike Bliss slammed into the wall in turn 2. He reported on his radio that something was not right so they came in and tried to fix it and sent him back out. It did not work. He got out of his car and was okay but had to go to the mandatory trip to the infield care center. all of the leaders pitted under this caution  Stenhouse Jr came in telling the crew he was loose. Logano came in and was tight and got 1 round up on the track-bar and tires with fuel. Denny Hamlin only got two tires and was the first one off pit road. Dillon got a penalty for a tire violation and had to go to the rear of the field for the restart.

They went back to green on lap 87 but that did not last long when the No.38 of Brad Sweet got loose in turn 4 and bumped into Michael Annett like a bumper car and spun out onto the front stretch grass. Dillon was one of the few cars that came in and got fuel only.

They went back to green on lap 95 with Hamlin leading but it did not last long as the No.20 of Logano took the lead while Hamlin was getting pushed back. Keselowski took the lead from Logano a couple laps later and pulled away.

Caution waved once again with 69 laps to go with Debris on the speedway. Keselowski really needed this caution as he had a huge piece of garbage on his splitter and he will get to remove it with coming down pit road.  All of the leaders came in with the No.22 bringing them down.  Keselowski got 4 tires with no chassis adjustment and got two pieces of tape off the grill. Stenhouse Jr told his crew chief that he was little tight, rolling in the center and was little free off. He got them to go down on the track bar and a slight air pressure in the right front. Logano got one up on the track bar and was wanting it to get the car turn into the corner. Sadler got a track bar for his tight condition and got a great pit stops and was the first one to leave pits.

Sadler led the field back to the green but Logano took it away in turn 1 when he was on the high side and cleared the #2. He had a 0.664 second lead over Sadler but was also having to keep Harvick away. Sadler also lost 3rd to Keselowski on lap 149.  Harvick took over the lead with 45 laps to go but everybody is 5-10 laps short of fuel.Logano did not give up and took the lead in turn 4 but Harvick made the slide job work perfectly and kept lead. Harvick got slowed up by a lap car and lost his momentum and fell back to third.

Everybody will have to come in for a little stop and go for fuel. Hamlin started the Green Flag pit stops and he took 2 tires with fuel instead of just taking fuel.  Dillon comes on to pit road with 19 to go and also took tires and fuel with a 7.3 pit stop time. Lagano come in 4 laps later and also takes 2 tires and fuel and leaves with a very fast pit stop of 6.4. Harvick comes in and only takes fuel as Sadler did. Stenhouse Jr took 2 tires and fuel and was off. Keselowski went in and took only fuel but there is some concern that they did not get all the fuel in.

Logano retook the lead after the green flag stops. Keselowski did not get enough fuel in and had to come in again with 4 laps to go.  He finished 18th, 1 lap down.

Sadler now holds a 13 point lead in the series standings over Stenhouse Jr.

“From a fan’s perspective, I think this was one of the best races of the year. When I was running fourth, the leaders were three wide the whole race. These cars put on such a good show with the rules package we have. I’m just really happy my family was here with me. My mom got to ride around in the truck with me when we got the pole. All in all, it’s been a really good night for the company.” Sadler said.

“We just made a mistake on the pit stop, and we will go back out there next week at Kansas and get them. We will come back and get them. There are still four races left, so there is still plenty of time.” Stenhouse Jr. said.
