McMurray wins the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Jamie McMurray held off Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson in the final 21 laps to win the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

After winning the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400, McMurray added another big race win to his belt this season. McMurray started in 27th position and took home his third big win of the season at Charlotte.

“Yes, it has been an unbelievable year. I certainly can’t thank Chip (Ganassi) and everybody enough. We’ve had a really good season and we’ve been blessed to have some really good runs in some bigger races. Really, really excited about our success this season.” McMurray said.

Busch and Johnson battled for second place in the final 10-laps of the race. Both drivers raced hard, but clean. Busch held off Johnson for second place.   Busch led a race-high 218 laps and was not happy about finishing second.

“Nobody can put it perspective for me, it’s very, very disappointing.” Busch said.   Points leader Jimmie Johnson had an up and down day. On lap 33, Johnson got loose and spun out. He kept it out of the wall and was able to get to pit road without any damage. Johnson battles back from 37th to finish third.

“We had a really loose race car and I was trying to run the middle lane down in one and two and lost it. Then I had to drive backwards and out the side window and everything to keep it off the inside wall and luckily I did that. We stayed on the lead lap and just went to work from there. The track slowly started coming our direction and that is when we got fast and was able to drive up to the front.” Johnson said.

Pole sitter Jeff Gordon started having alternator trouble on lap 190. Gordon loses power and loses a lap while switching over to the backup battery. Gordon received the lucky dog after a spin by Marcos Ambrose. The crew changed both batteries during the stop but the alternator still was not working. Gordon later was too fast entering pit-road and went down a lap again. Gordon finished 23rd and now sits 156 points out in the series standings.

“We had about everything go wrong that could go wrong. Track position being crucial at this place. I’ve never seen it so sensitive. We lost a little bit of track position and then we had the battery issue which took me a little while to figure out.” Gordon said.   Pre-race winner pick, Kurt Busch battled a loose car early. Busch got loose and spun on lap 24. Busch finished in 30th place, 237 points out in the series standings.

“Just a really confusing night for this Miller Lite Dodge Charger.  It’s really tough to explain.” Busch said. “We fought loose on exit early in the race and it cost us when I just nicked the wall off of (turn) 4. After that, we were all over the place. Loose, tight, loose again.”

Jeff Burton and Clint Bowyer got together on lap 246 coming out of turn two. Burton came down on Bowyer and Burton slide sideways down to the apron of the track. A lot of smoke, but no major contact was made and bother drivers were able to continue on.

Kasey Kahne got loose on lap 123 and hits the wall, also collecting Sam Hornish Jr. Both sustained heavy damage and went to the garage. JJ Yeley later returned to the speedway driving the No 9.   Johnson now holds a 41 point lead in the series standings over Hamlin with five races remaining.

  • Keselowski cruises NNS to victory at Charlotte

Keselowski cruises NNS to victory at Charlotte

Brad Keselowski cruised to his 11th career Nationwide Series win and fifth of the season on Friday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“It was a great run. The start of the race was pretty frustrating. We started third, had a great qualifying effort.” Keselowski said. “I’m so mentally exhausted after this race. I might be bias, but this was the best race that I’ve seen in my life. That was awesome!”

The final caution flag came out on lap 187. The race was restarted with an 8-lap shootout between Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr., Joey Lagano and Justin Allgaier.   Keselowski cleared Truex Jr. with five laps remaining and cruised to victory by 1.138 seconds to win his first race at Charlotte.

“I have never been so disappointed to run second. It looked like if those last couple cautions hadn’t come out, we were going to be in good shape. Just a little too tight after that last run there. It’s a shame because on the green flag runs we were really fast and really just called off the adjustments and then we got too tight later.” Truex Jr. said.

Kyle Busch dominated the three quarters of the race and led a race high of 84 laps. Busch and Justin Allgaier made contact late in the race.  Busch faded back and finished in sixth place.

Allgaier finished third, Logano fourth and Clint Bowyer finished fifth.

“The Penske Dodge Challenger was awesome. These Verizon guys do a great job week in and week out. We don’t always get the results, but tonight they worked their tails off and we got a good finish.” Allgaier said.

Danica Patrick scraped the wall on lap 11. Patrick battled back to finish 21st.

“It seems like every time we have a chance to have a great finish we crash.” Patrick said. “And every time we have a pretty average night we finish and we finish in the 20s.”

Lap Notables:   On lap 187, Steve Wallace gets into the wall on the backstretch.   On lap 182, Brian Scott spins on the frontstretch and drags his trunk-lid down the track.   On lap 72, Robert Richardson Jr. got loose in turn two and backed into the outside wall collecting Ryan Truex.   On lap 64, Brian Scott got loose and spun coming out of turn four.   On lap 10, Michael Annett got loose between turns one and two, collecting Joe Nemechek and Shelby Howard. Nemechek suffered heavy damage.   Parker Kligerman, No 26, making his first start at Charlotte brought out the first caution flag of the night on lap 2. Parker lost control in turn four and backed into the outside wall.

    Brad Keppel

Clint Bowyer captured the pole for Friday nights Nationwide Series Dollar General 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway with a lap of 182.174 MPH (29.642secs).

Ryan Newman qualified second, Brad Keselowski third, Joey Logano fourth and Martin Truex Jr. qualified fifth.

“A solid lap for this Discount Tire Dodge Challenger.  I’m pretty happy with our effort.  The 21 ran a heck of a lap.  I think that we needed to be a little bit tighter.  It looks like we’ll start somewhere near the front which will give us a good pit stall for tonight.  We’re fast and we start up front.  All is good.” Keselowski said.

    Danica Patrick qualified 18th.

  • No. 00 Pit Crew Tops On Pit Road In Third Quarter

David Reutimann’s Michael Waltrip Racing Over-the-Wall Team Voted Third-Quarter Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew

    CHARLOTTE, N.C. (October 15, 2010) –

For their outstanding efforts on pit road, the No. 00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota over-the-wall team for David Reutimann and Michael Waltrip Racing has earned third-quarter honors in the 2010 Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew Award competition.

The Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew Award, which is determined by a vote of each team’s crew chief, is given quarterly to the top-performing pit crew in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The four quarterly winners are eligible for the year-end Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew Award presented during Champion’s Week in Las Vegas.

The award is part of the NASCAR Prize Money and Decal Program, also referred to as the contingency program, which provide teams prize money and weekly awards based on performance in several categories. Mechanix Wear, the #1 glove in racing, is the Official Glove of NASCAR® used by nearly all pit crew members in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Created nine years ago, the Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew Award it is one of the most sought-after titles for pit crews.

“We work with pit crews every week to jointly develop products that help them do their job better,” said Ted Abdon, Director of Racing for Mechanix Wear. “We look at the changes in the cars and the pit stops, and create products that make them safer on the job and help them do it more effectively. We’ve worked hard to reward them for being the best in their sport.”

This year, Reutimann and the No. 00 team have posted one win, five top-fives and six top-10’s. While Reutimann is turning fast laps behind the wheel, crew chief Rodney Childers’ over-the-wall gang has been on their game as well, performing consistent, quick pit stops all year.

“The Aaron’s Dream Machine pit crew has done an outstanding job all year,” said Reutimann. “They are a relatively new team this year and sometimes it takes a while for a team to come into its own, but our guys have done a great job all year. I really appreciate all the hard work that those guys put in each week to make sure that we have great stops. It definitely helps on race days and I know they play a big part in how we perform on the track each weekend.”

Members of the No. 00 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota pit crew include: Ryan Langley (front-tire changer), Chris Hall (front-tire carrier), Eric Maycroft (rear-tire changer), Don Marvel (rear-tire carrier), Tony Cardamone (jackman), Art Harris (gasman), and Jeff Seaberg (catch can). The team’s pit crew coach is Greg Miller.

“The No. 00 Aaron’s Dream Machine pit crew is a great group of guys that really work well together,” said Greg Miller. “The guys all do a great job of keeping focused both in their workouts and on race day. As a group they put a lot of work into their pit stops and preparation. The hard work that goes on during the week pays off on race day. This is a crew that is only going to get better with time, but it’s nice to know that the rest of the garage appreciates the work that our guys are doing. This is the second Michael Waltrip Racing team to win a Mechanix Wear quarterly award this year and we hope to take home the year end award as well.”

  • Kyle Busch Snags Twelfth Nationwide Win; Danica Wrecks But Runs Strong

Kyle Busch Snags Twelfth Nationwide Win; Danica Wrecks But Runs Strong

In his usual style and in spite of a pit road speeding penalty, Kyle Busch powered his way to his twelfth race win in the CampingWorld.com 300 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.

Busch, who started from the pole position, brought his No. 18 NOS Energy Drink Toyota to the checkered flag, taking his traditional victory bow to the delight and omnipresent booing of the Cali race crowd.

Busch put it simply in Victory Lane. “To get No. 12,” Busch said. “It’s awesome.”

With the early part of the race being relatively caution-free, several late race cautions and restarts challenged Busch and the rest of the field. One of the biggest wrecks involved Danica Patrick, fresh off her good IndyCar run and now focused fully on her NASCAR career in her No. 7 Tissot/Go Daddy.com Chevrolet.

Patrick was running well and was on the cusp of achieving her goal of a top-15 finish when James Buescher got into her from behind, spinning her and sending her car almost airborne before collecting Ricky Carmichael, who just seems to keep ending up on the short end of the luck stick.

Because of the accident, Patrick ended the race in the 30th position. But she was most upbeat even after the wreck, talking with the media and explaining her run just like a NASCAR pro.

“I think we’re getting closer. I really do,” Patrick said after the race. “We’re going to have a lot of confidence going into Charlotte, I think.”

Winning the award for the most angry and frustrated driver was California home boy Kevin Harvick, whose pit crew yet again let him down. Harvick lost the lead not once but twice in large part due to errors on the part of his pit crew.

Harvick voiced his frustration after the first pit road misstep, saying “Come on guys, can we win a damn race?”

After the first pit road disaster, Harvick then told his crew over the radio that he was “terrified to come down pit road” after another caution flag flew. Harvick powered his way back to finish in the third position but openly criticized his pit crew after the race, noting that “there would be changes.”

Brad Keselowski, currently in the points lead in the Nationwide Series, finished in the runner up to Kyle Busch position. The driver or the No. 22 America’s Tire Dodge now has a 384 point advantage over second place in the points Carl Edwards.

Edwards, however, had a good run in his No. 60 Copart.com Ford. While mixing it up in the top five for much of the race, Edwards finished the race in the fourth position.

Joey Logano finished in fifth, with Aric Almirola right behind in the sixth spot. Ryan Newman, Justin Allgaier, Mike Bliss and Reed Sorenson rounded out the top ten.

In just his second start for Roush Fenway Racing, Trevor Bayne continued to show off his stuff by finishing in the 11th position. Two rookies, Colin Braun and Brian Scott, both finished in the top fifteen, claiming the 13th and 15th positions respectively.

Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., who had just taken possession of the lead in the Nationwide Rookie standings, did not have a stellar day, getting damaged in the Danica Patrick melee. Stenhouse was able to nurse his No. 6 Blackwell Angus Beef Ford to the checkered flag just ahead of Patrick in the 29th position.

The Nationwide Series will head next to the heart of NASCAR country to run at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The race will run under the lights on Saturday, October 15th and will be covered on ESPN2 beginning at 7:30 PM ET.

  • Busch wins NNS race at Auto Club Speedway

Busch wins NNS race at Auto Club Speedway

Kyle Busch rallied back from a speeding penalty on Saturday in the NASCAR Nationwide Series CampingWorld.com 300 and won his fourth career race at Auto Club Speedway.

Busch started from the pole and led four times for 38 of the 150 laps run and extended his series record setting 12th NNS victory of the season.

His crew got him out front on the final pit stop of the day.

“These guys did an awesome job for me today.  Pit road probably won this race, so I can’ t thank these guys enough.” Busch said.

Kevin Harvick led a race-high 86 laps, but his pit crew set him back twice and in the final pit stop he lost four positions.  Harvick finished third.

“Obviously, we’ve got to take that next step on pit road because they’re just doing a terrible job. That’s not what our operation is all about. If they can’t stand the pressure, they better find something else to do.” Harvick said.

Brad Keselowski finished second and extended his lead in the series point standings to 384 points.

Danica Patrick qualified 14th and was heading to a top-15 finish when she was spun out late in the race.  Clearly frustrated, Patrick finished in 30th place.

“The frustrating part is that I feel like we had a really good car on those last two restarts.  I got into the car that spun on the lap before, but I didn’t mean to. Next time, I got pretty close, but I came off and gave him room. Looking at the replay, it looks like it could have been avoidable.” Patrick said.

Next week the NASCAR Nationwide Series moves to Charlotte Motor Speedway on ESPN2 Friday, October 15.

  • Stewart wins the Pepsi MAX 400 at Auto Club Speedway

Stewart wins the Pepsi MAX 400 at Auto Club Speedway

Tony Stewart held off Clint Bowyer and Jimmie Johnson in the final laps and won Sunday’s Pepsi Max 400 at Auto Club Speedway.

Stewart also gained five spots in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship standings and  secured the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Manufacturers’ Cup for Chevrolet for the 34th time since the inception of the award in 1950.

“We’re doing everything we can do.  We’re going to need some help, but we’re doing everything we can do.  I’m proud of these guys, and just so thankful.  Thank Hendrick Engines and Chassis, and everybody at Stewart Haas, they refuse to give up, they refuse to back down.” Stewart said.

Bowyer and Johnson both contended for the win but the No. 33 outdid the champion’s car on the final lap to finish second.   “I didn’t need that caution to come out there. That piece of debris was back there the whole run, but finally a mysterious caution came out. Tony just beat us there at the end. The Hartford Chevrolet was good. It was a good day for us. We will regroup and hopefully get us another win.” Bowyer said.

“I think if it had stayed green at the end, we had a shot to get the No. 14, But it didn’t turn out that way, there was a caution at the end with that wreck. Starting on the inside was kind of a problem for me. I just didn’t get going like I needed to. The No. 33 got there.” Johnson said.   “One race down, still in the points lead, but a lot of racing left.” Johnson added.

Jeff Gordon was running in second place until he pitted during a caution flag.  He was too fast on pit road and restarted the race in 24th place.  The final caution flag allowed Gordon to pit for tires with the rest of the cars in the mid pack which helped him pass a bunch of cars in a short period allowing him into the top-10 before the race ended.  Gordon finished in 9th place.

“It wasn’t the kind of day we were hoping for. Things are going pretty well for us and we’re hanging in there but honestly I think we were anywhere from a third to a fifth-place car, so to come home ninth, there’s no doubt, we need to get better. There’s no doubt. We’ve got to get better.” Gordon said.

Other chase drivers didn’t fair so well.  Kyle Busch, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards all had engine trouble.  Matt Kenseth who was also having engine trouble, nursed his car to a disappointing 30th. Kurt Busch was involved in an accident with David Regan and finsihed a disappointing 21st.

“It’s unfortunate for us,” he said. “This was our opportunity to get back in the Chase and it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. It’s disappointing, but what can you do? It broke. Everybody is giving this program 110 percent, so you can’t blame anybody. We were trying hard to win the title and it isn’t going to happen this year.”

After his engine blew, Busch said his championship chances were over.    “On to another year.  It’s over.” Busch said from the garage while the race was still underway.

The Biff! – Biffle Wins! Johnson to Points Lead

Chase contenders dominated the top 15 all day during the Price Chopper 400 at the Kansas Speedway. When it was all over it was Chase contender Gregg Biffle who ended up taking the hardware home with a commanding seven second win over a resurgent Jimmie Johnson. Chase participants made up the top finishing positions and Denny Hamlin finished twelfth.

The race had only five cautions, twenty lead changes amongst twelve different drivers. Tony Stewart led the most laps with 76 as Biffle led 60. “It’s a big win for us. The car ran great today and it just kept getting better and better all day,” Biffle said in victory lane. “We were kind of down in the dumps after Dover and we’re going to do the best we can.”

“It sounds awesome,” is what Jimmie Johnson said after he found out that he was the points leader after his second place finish and Hamlin’s top 15 finish. Hamlin dropped to second only 8 points back, Kevin Harvick is in third 30 points back with Carl Edwards and Jeff Gordon within 53 points of the leader.

Kasey Kahne, the pole sitter led the race early until Jeff Gordon took over. Gordon led until David Reutimann was spun out by Kyle Busch after apparently getting loose. On lap 154 Reutimann ran into Kyle Busch putting him hard into the wall and wrecking himself in the process. Busch protested over the radio that NASCAR needed to do something because his car “is destroyed” and needed repairs to complete the race. Reutimann said, “We just got run over early and it ruined our day. It just did not work for us. No reason, its get a little old. It just didn’t work out”

Busch, after the race was asked he wanted NASCAR to do and he said, “Nothing, I thought about it and I don’t want them to do anything. It’s unfortunate to have it happen; the guy was loose and I got into him. He could have wrecked me anyone of the first twenty six races but not today.” Busch’s crew chief decided that it would be better for Busch to stay on the track and try to tough it out with a tore up rear end rather than losing laps in the garage. Busch finished in 21st , the first car one lap down. Reutimann finished in 35th ; 11 laps off the pace.

Tony Stewart dominated the middle section of the race which saw long green flag runs and Stewart extending his lead. But when Biffle finally made it by Stewart he never looked back.

  • Logano wins NNS race at Kansas

Logano wins NNS race at Kansas

Joey Logano passed teammate Kyle Busch for the race lead with six laps remaining in Saturday’s Nationwide Series race at Kansas Speedway.  A late caution flag setup and two lap duel between the two teammates.

Logano choose the outside line for the race restart.  The race restarted with Logano and Busch door-to-door heading into turn one.  Logano received a huge push from series points leader Brad Keselowski, giving him just enough to pull ahead of Busch and on to his second win at Kansas.

“He helped me out a lot, which was perfect because I pushed him to a couple wins.  So it was nice of him to push me once. Me and Brad have been getting along great lately, which is awesome. It was cool to see him behind me and able to help me out.” Logano said.

This was Logano’s 16th Nationwide Series victory this season for Joe Gibbs Racing and it also gave Toyota the manufacturer’s title for the third consecutive year.

Busch dive-bombed Logano heading into the final turn on the final lap.  Busch tapped the rear of Logano, just enough to make Logano wiggle a little.  But the move only cost Busch in the end.  He had to let off too much to avoid hitting the wall and it allowed Keselowski to get around him before the finish line for second place.

“We were just a little bit off the Gibbs’ cars today.  We had some great strategy today, raced our way up front and just didn’t have enough to keep in front of them.” Keselowski said.

Busch finished third, Kevin Harvick fourth and and Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top five.

  • Johnson wins at Dover; Narrows point’s gap to 35

Johnson wins at Dover; Narrows point’s gap to 35

Dover, DE – With his sixth Dover win in the books, Jimmie Johnson surges in the NASCAR Chase Championship point’s battle to second just 35 points behind leader Denny Hamlin. The No. 48 Lowe’s/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet team demonstrated their desire to win a fifth straight title and that six wins in 2010 are just the beginning.

Johnson earned his 53rd career victory in the 40th running of the AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway. This was his 319 career start. “Obviously, the weekend we would dream of,” said Johnson. “winning the pole, leading the most laps, and winning the race.”

“There are eight races left in the Chase and the points can shake up a lot,” Johnson said. “We want to win five in a row; we want to win this championship.” And well he is pleased to have won the race; Johnson is keeping his sights set on the bigger prize.

In the interim, he got to celebrate with his daughter for the first time in victory lane.   The first caution of the race came around lap 38, when a safety light blew on the back straightaway.   David Reutimann, driver of the No. 00 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing drew the second caution after a spin in turn four. Back to racing and it was A.J. Allmendinger leading the way. At one point, Allmendinger opened up a six second lead on local favorite Martin Truex Jr.

Following a tire issue, Allmendinger would be relegated to mid pack. Allmendinger lead 143 laps in Sunday’s race, the most in one event. “Everybody at Richard Petty Motorsports is building great race cars and Doug Yates and all those guys are bringing a lot of horsepower,” he said. “We’re getting really good at fighting back and making good finishes out of a problem that happens.”

During green flag pit stops, Chase contender Tony Stewart was penalized with a drive thru penalty for being too fast entering pit road. He finished two laps down in 21st.   The weekend woes for Clint Bowyer continued as he hit the wall. And then following the race, Bowyer’s Chevrolet was tagged for a return trip to the R& D Center. The RCR appeal is set to be heard this week on his New Hampshire penalty.

Cautions also flew for debris following two incidents with Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne, respectively, during Sunday’s race.

Rounding out the top five was Jeff Burton, Joey Logano, Kurt Busch and Carl Edwards. Burton’s stellar performance was attributed to his team’s ability to change with the track. “We thought we had a really good racecar coming into the race today,” he said. In true ‘Tony the Tiger’ fashion, Burton gave props to the No. 48 team. “They’re not good, they’re great! They’ve been in the hunt. I think there as seasoned as you can possibly be together.”

The top 10 included Kyle Busch, Paul Menard, Ryan Newman, Denny Hamlin and A.J. Allmendinger. Kevin Conway was the highest finishing rookie in 37th place.

The top five contenders in the Chase for the Championship are separated by a mere 65 points. Kyle Busch is third followed by his brother Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick. Denny Hamlin leads the pack with a total of 5368 points, and is satisfied to be leaving Dover in his mist with a thirty-five point cushion.

“I think there is going to be a handful of guys running for the championship in Homestead,” Hamlin said. The 14 can light things up at anytime. This is the most wide open chase that we’ve had so far.”

Next week the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Kansas Speedway.
