Chastain Earns Big Win At Iowa

Editors note: Ross Chastain, driver the No. 44 Niece Motorsports truck and former winner of the MMS 200, failed post race inspection. As a result, Chastain’s win was taken away and Brett Moffitt is the new winner of Sunday’s Truck Series race at Iowa. The Niece Motorsports team can appeal the decision. Updated post race news to follow!

Ross Chastain won the 11th Annual M&M’S® 200 presented by Casey’s General Store at Iowa Speedway. This was his second victory in 69 Gander Outdoors Truck Series races and the 10th top-10 finish in 2019.

“Man, it was incredible,” Chastain said in his post race interview with MRN Radio. “The truck, it’s absolutely incredible that race trucks can go this fast, it’s all to a testament to Niece Motorsports and how far they came, and the people behind the scenes. We all started with GMS fabrication and they give us good baselines, we took it from there and we just go because we’re racers. We’ve had a lot thrown out us this year, but at the end of the day, it’s just a bunch of racers racing and I get to come out here, and live my dream, be competitive in NASCAR. Thanks to TruNorth and Al Niece, he’s (Al Niece) is not even here this weekend, they couldn’t make it. Awesome, I hate I’m going to miss the Xfinity race in a couple of hours, but I will be in the booth (MRN Radio) with you guys.”

After being postponed due to weather from Saturday night, the MMS 200 started a day later and it was well worth the wait.

Since qualifying was also rained out, rising star Chandler Smith started on the pole for his first Truck Series race and current championship points leader Grant Enfinger, started outside pole.

Stage 1 went 60 laps and it remained green without any incidents for the most part.

The first came on lap 15 for Chandler Smith who reported they were having radio issues. Smth’s team could hear him, but Smith could not hear the pit crew. Smith continued to ride it out until a caution late in the stage. The next incident occurred two laps for Juan Manuel Gonzalez who had a right front tire go down. There would be no cautions for either incidents.

Smith continued to put a beating on the field leading most of the stage despite not receiving any radio communication from the spotter or crew chief.

The first caution came out on lap 52 of 60 for Stage 1 and it was for Manuel Gonzalez, who had another tire go down and wound up hitting the wall off Turn 4.

This allowed Smith to come down pit road to fix the radio problem, which he did, but nearly took one of his crew members with him when he tried leaving his pit box. Brennan Poole was penalized for too fast entering.

With the late yellow in the first stage, this would set up a two lap shoot out for the stage finish and it was quite something.

Thorsport had most of its trucks in the top five for the two lap shoot out, but failed to get the stage win as Ross Chastain took the top groove and made a three wide pass on Matt Crafton and Grant Enfinger for the win. Smith would end up finishing 16th after fixing his radio issue.

The race restarted for Stage 2 and was back underway on lap 66, and it saw a 54 lap green flag run with out any yellows.

The only biggest mover of the stage was Chandler Smith, who moved his way up to fifth in the famed No. 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports truck.

Chastain would continue his domination and end up winning the stage again.

Stage 3 would be one of the most interesting stages of the season as far as Truck Series competition goes.

Another caution broke out on lap 137 for the two-time champion Johnny Sauter, as his truck would wind up hitting the Turn 4 wall. However, replays showed it was Austin Hill who wrecked him on purpose to bring out the caution. It appeared the two had been running each other hard a couple of laps earlier, prior to the incident taking place.

After the incident, Sauter was upset with what took place and retaliated against Hill, and tried to wreck Hill back under caution. Due to Sauter’s action, NASCAR officials would end up parking him for the remainder of the race. With the finish of 28th, it would continue Sauter’s mid-season frustration with his fourth finish outside the top-10.

    Well then… pic.twitter.com/vfRBzPvgQA— FOX: NASCAR (@NASCARONFOX) June 16, 2019

When the action was said and done, surprisingly the last restart of the race would take place on lap 144 and Chastain led the rest of the way to pick up his second win of the season.

With the win in the Triple Truck Challenge, Chastain and his Niece Motorsports team will pick up an additional $50,000. However, the money will not be a personal gain for the Florida native, rather it will go toward the teams finances.

“It’s going to Al (Niece, Team Owner), we’re not funded for the whole year,” Chastain added in his post race interview with MRN Radio. “This money will be spent on race trucks and able to go get another chassis, so we have another bullet later in the year.”

Chastain led one time for 141 laps and won all two stages. Despite the win and the selection of getting Truck Series points, he continues to be outside the top-20 in driver standings.

There were four cautions for 25 laps with four lead changes among three lead changes.

  • Tyler Reddick wins the LTI Printing 250 at Michigan International Speedway

Tyler Reddick wins the LTI Printing 250 at Michigan International Speedway

It was a bright sunny day for NASCAR Xfinity Series, LTI Printing 250 at Michigan International Speedway. Especially for Tyler Reddick who wheeled his No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet into Victory Lane. Reddick kept his Chevy near the front of the race and was able to take advantage of a miscue by Cole Custer and Christopher Bell and capture his third win of the season.

Our KCMG Chevrolet was really good.” Reddick noted, “ I made some mistakes on pit road and we didn’t get the track position until the end there. A great team effort, I didn’t do the thing I needed to do out on the racetrack but man that was a great car and we just put ourselves in a position to win.”

Noah Gragson brought his No. 9 JR Chevrolet Motorsports home in second, a career best finish for Gragson.

“ It was challenging, we got ourselves in a hole there in the second stage during the pit stops. Gragson commented, “ The 19 (Brandon Jones) checked up and I hit him. I just didn’t know where to go on pit road.” Gragson added, “ Great effort by everyone on the Switch team at JR Motorsports, they rallied and they never quit.” Gragson stated, “ We’re just going to keep plugging at it taking baby steps from here.”

Michael Annett brought his No.1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet home in third place.

“ I don’t know how much Tyler was playing the fuel strategy. I know that we were really tight and he was on the same plan I think Noah was too ” He added, “We came in and splashed off with one to go and were able to stay out and get that track position, that’s what today was all about. Thank you to everyone at JRM, it’s good to get us in the top five.”

Stage 1 started with Paul Menard on the pole and Christopher Bell making up the front row. The first caution happened early when the cars of Dillon Bassett and Ray Black Jr. spin around. The caution flag waived for the second time at lap 13 when Riley Herbst tagged the wall and at the same time Jeb Burton spun. Menard was pretty much untouchable leading every lap and winning the stage easily.

Stage 2 started with Menard in the top spot once again. A couple of cars made a bid for the lead but couldn’t make the pass stick. It looked as if it would be an easy stage win for Menard, but on the last lap Bell made his move to win stage 2. The stage ran without any cautions flags.

The final stage started with Bell and Cole Custer making up the front row. The first caution of the stage came out for Gray Gaulding who spun. A miscue with Bell’s team who wanted him to pit, but he stayed out. Custer’s team was supposed to do whatever Bell did so they didn’t pit either. With 30 laps to go Custer took the lead but still needed to make a pit stop along with Bell. Drivers tried to save gas because some were going to be close on if they could make it the rest of the way. Bell and Custer appear to be around 7 laps short on fuel. Bell and Custer had to make pit stops for fuel, which gave the lead to Reddick with 11 laps to go. Reddick stayed in front and took home the checkered flag.

Menard and Justin Allgaier would round out the top five. Brandon Jones, Chase Briscoe, John Hunter Nemechek, Jeb Burton, and Justin Haley finished sixth through 10th, respectively.

Reddick leads the NASCAR Xfinity Series Point Standings with 627 points, Bell is in second with 538 points, Custer is in third with 510 points, Austin Cindric is fourth with 486 points, Allgaier rounds out the top five with 479 points.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series heads next to Iowa Speedway on Sunday June 16.

  • Greg Biffle wins Truck Series race at Texas in return to NASCAR

Greg Biffle wins Truck Series race at Texas in return to NASCAR

Greg Biffle raced his way into victory lane at Texas Motor Speedway Friday night after winning the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race. It has been 15 years since the 2000 Truck Series champion was last seen in a Truck Series race.

His last start in the series came in 2004 at the season finale in Homestead where Biffle started 24th and drove to an eighth-place finish. However, the last time NASCAR nation saw Biffle in victory lane in the series was in 2001 at ISM Raceway, formerly named Phoenix International Raceway.

And now, 18 years later, Biffle returned to Texas Motor Speedway in hopes of getting a win for the famed No. 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports team who has been on fire this year. And he did just that.

It looked like Biffle had not missed a beat as he qualified sixth for the race. Stage 1 saw him finish 16th, but Stage 2 had a better outcome as he wound up sixth.

After a long green flag run, a caution came out with 15 to go when Austin Wayne Self stalled on the bottom of the race track. This saw Biffle restart on the front row with a 10 lap shootout. He had two-time champion, Matt Crafton, chasing him down, but in the end, Biffle saved enough fuel and was able to run away with the checkered flag.

“I don’t know if it was that easy,” Biffle told MRN Radio in a post-race interview. “I had my work cut out for me at the beginning of the race. So much odd stuff happened. I had a bunch of people wrecking in front of me and behind me. I was just trying to keep myself clean. You know beat the fenders in a little bit, but Mobil 1 Toyota ran really good tonight. I thank those guys for coming on board and helping us. You know Kyle Busch assembled a great group of guys. Pit stops were phenomenal, Rudy (Fugel, Crew Chief) did a great job calling the race on top of the box. It’s not easy to win these, but I can see how Kyle (Busch, Team Owner) has done very well.”

The SpeedyCash.com 400 was broken up into three stages that saw 40 laps in Stage 1 and Stage 2, and 87 laps in the final stage.

There’s an old joke that goes around every once in a while and that’s, “Everything Is Bigger In Texas.” Well so were the cautions. There were four cautions in the first stage along with one red flag.

The first occurred on Lap 12 for Gus Dean who wrecked on the backstretch. The second was on Lap 21 when Niece Motorsports driver Kyle Benjamin got loose off Turn 4 and smacked the wall. On Lap 27, the third caution flew and this time it was for the No. 9 of Codie Rohrbaugh. And the final caution for the first stage came on Lap 34, as Angela Ruch spun off Turn 2 and wrecked.

After four cautions and one red flag in Stage 1, Johnny Sauter, who has been to victory lane at Texas numerous times, survived the carnage and won Stage 1.

Stage 2 saw the green flag fly on Lap 46 and saw tons of cautions again.

This time, it was Stage 1 winner Sauter, who received heavy damage to his truck as he and Austin Hill made slight contact with each other, which sent Sauter into the wall with major rear end damage to the truck. This would eventually take Sauter out of contention to win the race.

On Lap 63, Texas native Cory Roper spun off Turn 2 to bring out another caution. Just a few laps later after having a strong night, Todd Gilliland spun in Turn 2 after his truck got loose on the restart which ended his night as well.

Coming to Lap 75, the new high school graduate Tyler Ankrum made a spectacular save sliding onto pit road without hitting anything. There was no caution for the incident. Turn 2 seemed to be the trouble spot again as Jordan Anderson spun there on the final lap of Stage 2 which ended the stage under caution.

Sauter’s Thorsport teammate and Kentucky native Ben Rhodes wound up wining the stage.

The third and final stage finally came with 80 to go. Young’s Motorsports drivers Sheldon Creed and Tyler Dippel were on the front row for the restart. However, troubles rose again, as they made contact with each other with Dippel wrecking on Lap 89 after having a flat tire go down.

There were more problems on the restart with 73 to go, as Stage 2 winner Rhodes, had to pull out of the lead when his truck started to go south. As that happened, another incident broke loose as Spencer Boyd, Natalie Decker and Trey Hutchens all made contact with each other on the backstretch to bring out another caution.

Rhodes issue was later diagnosed as a transmission failure. The No. 99 Carolina Nut Ford F-150 did not return to the track and wound up finishing a disappointing 21st.

With 64 to go for the restart, Biffle was up front and took the lead for the first time since 2001. However as we had seen throughout the night, the caution came out again with 60 to go. After having numerous cautions in the first half of the race, the field finally settled down a little bit and got into a long green flag run.

Teams began making pit stops with 30 to go as they could not make it the rest of the way. It began with Anthony Alfredo who was having a solid night in the top-10, then Ross Chastain with 27 to go and race leader Austin Hill with 21 to go.

Another caution with 15 to go changed everything as Biffle, along with others, chose not to make a pit stop. A late race restart was set up with 10 to go and Biffle had to hold off Crafton, Ankrum, Enfinger, Burton and Creed, who were all looking for their first win of the season.

By not pitting, Biffle could have been the only one to run out of gas. But luck was on his side as he was able to fend off the two-time champion of Matt Crafton and drive into victory lane for his first Truck Series win since 2001.

“I probably wasn’t as nervous as Rudy (Fugel, Crew Chief) was,” Biffle said to MRN Radio in his post-race interview describing the fuel situation. “But I knew it was close, it was a good call by Rudy to keep us out there. We had no tires and a little bit of gas wasn’t going to do anything, we were all ready for it. So, I figured we would stay out.”

With this win, the Washington State native claimed the first victory of The Triple Truck Challenge and won $50,000. Several people wondered if Biffle would continue the three-race span in hopes of collecting half a million by the time Gateway ended.

“You know, I don’t know,” Biffle added. “I think they (Kyle Busch Motorsports) already have a plan put together for all three trucks to win, but we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

This was Biffle’s first win at Texas since 2000, a whopping 19 years ago. He led twice for 18 laps. This was Kyle Busch Motorsports’ sixth win of the season.

There were 13 cautions for 63 laps along with 12 lead changes among nine drivers.

The No. 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports truck continues to lead in the owner points over the No. 98 Thorsport Racing team by 32 points.

Kyle Busch is victorious on the Tricky Triangle in the Pocono 400

Despite the field seeking out more speed and track position with various pit strategies, Kyle Busch led 79 laps to win his 55th career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway in the Pocono 500, tying Rusty Wallace on the all-time win list.

“I just can’t say enough about everybody at Joe Gibbs Racing,” Busch said in Victory Lane. “Everybody that works there works so hard to build these awesome Camrys. We’ve had an amazing roll this year here so far. We’ve been doing well.

“We feel like we’ve kind of given away a couple of wins that we thought we had a shot for, but overall, it’s been awesome to get back to Victory Lane here. Pocono’s been a struggle, but it’s a lot better now.”

Busch’s fourth win of the season came after beating Brad Keselowski by 2.224 seconds. He led a few laps during pit cycles, but was able to fight his way up after the final restart to get close to Busch. His No. 2 Penske Ford wasn’t quite as strong.

“We didn’t have speed enough to pass guys, but we could run with them,” Keselowski said. “We wanted a little bit more to be able to pass everybody, but you had to be so much faster that you just try to execute the best you can and hope things fall the right way. “They fell decent, just not good enough to win today.”

Erik Jones finished in the third position, followed by Talladega winner Chase Elliott. Clint Bowyer completed the top five.

“I feel like if Kyle [Busch] and I had been on four tires, we would’ve been pretty even,” Jones said with a positive outlook with his third place effort after a dead last finish in last weekend’s Coca-Cola 600. “Good day overall, it would have had to really be a perfect scenario for us to win today, but we had a good car. The Dewalt Camry was fast, and it was fast all weekend.”

“We’ve been good, but not great,” Elliott shared with FOX Sports after the race when evaluating their current overall situation.

Denny Hamlin, Joey Logano, Daniel Suarez, pole winner William Byron and Aric Almirola rounded out the top 10.

Three front runners had struggles in the race. First, Kevin Harvick was in contention for the win, but a late race pit-road penalty changed their outcome. On Lap 124, they were caught with an uncontrolled tire and were forced to serve a pass-through penalty. Harvick dropped off the lead lap and finished his day at Pocono in the 22nd spot.

Last week’s winner Martin Truex Jr. was victorious in three of the last five points-paying races. However, his attempt for his fourth win of the season fell short after 91 laps into the race when his Joe Gibbs Racing No. 19 Toyota went behind the wall with an engine issue. His team finished 35th for the day.

The third driver who was a strong contender early in the race was Kyle Larson. The Chip Ganassi Racing No. 42 Chevrolet driver led 35 laps and won the race’s first two stages. On a late race restart, Larson slapped the outside wall after contact with Clint Bowyer. He was forced to pit with damage to the right rear and at risk of blowing a tire. He finished one lap down in the 26th position.

The weekend was a rough start for Erik Jones and Chris Buescher as they failed pre-qualifying inspection on Saturday. Since cars were impounded after Busch Pole Qualifying, the inspection also served as pre-race inspection. This resulted in the car chief for both teams being ejected for the race weekend, Jason Overstreet (No. 20) and Doug Powers (No. 37). Both drivers have been coming from strong recent finishes, with Jones finishing in the top-six in two of the last three races and Buescher with two consecutive top-10 results.

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races next weekend at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, June 9.

  • Custer wins the Pocono Green 250 at Pocono Raceway

Custer wins the Pocono Green 250 at Pocono Raceway

The NASCAR Xfinity Series enjoyed a beautiful Saturday at Pocono Raceway in the Pocono Green 250 Recycled by J.D. Mascaro & Sons.  It was an even better day for Stewart Haas Racing (SHR) with one car winning and another car finishing third.

Cole Custer in his No.00 SHR Ford completely dominated the first stage of the race and was leading until a late caution flag came out.  Tyler Reddick took over the lead until the final turn when he slipped up just enough for Custer to make the pass and win in overtime.

“Tyler gave me a great push down there and I have no idea how we made it stick when he drove down into turn one.” He added, “Our Fims Ford Mustang was just awesome, they’re just awesome people.” Custer stated, “I was nervous once he {Reddick} got by me but he just drove into the corner real deep and lost the track a little bit I and I played it right and got by him. I just can’t thank all the guys enough.”

Stage 1 started with Custer on the pole and Christopher Bell on the outside of the front row. The first caution flag flew when Brandon Jones spun and hit the wall ending his day early. Only a few laps later Joey Gase, Chad Finchum, and Todd Peck tangled up bringing out the second caution. Finchum received heavy damage and was done for the day. On lap 16 Bell got loose and spun bringing out the third caution. Custer handily won the stage having led every lap.

Stage 2 started with John Hunter Nemechek and Jeffrey Earnhardt taking the green after several cars had pitted before the end of stage 1. It looked as if Bell would run away with the stage however, Allgaier had other ideas and took over the top spot. Coming down to the end of the stage Tyler Reddick and Allgaier had a great battle for the stage win but a lapped car unwittingly helped Allgaier take the stage win. There were several great battles going on, but everyone kept it straight and the stage ran caution free.

The final stage Justin Allgaier took the lead for a few laps during green flag pit stops, but once they had cycled through it was Custer back in charge. Things got a little dicey in the closing laps and the caution flag waived when it appeared Austin Cindric got tangled up with Jeffrey Earnhardt and turned him around. Allgaier spun with only a few laps to go sending the race into overtime. Reddick had the lead when the white flag waived but it was Custer with a last lap pass that took the checkered flag and won the race.

Reddick in his No.2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet just didn’t quite have enough at the end to hold back Custer, but still had a great run coming in second place.

“I heard he drove it in deep so I tried to cover the bottom.” Reddick said, “ We were so good at the beginning of the race I just don’t know what changed and the car went a little away from us there. I was just too tight to hold the bottom there. I got loose and it right back to him.  It was really fun to battle with him today, I hope the fans enjoyed it.”

Ryan Preece and Christopher Bell would round out the top five. Noah Gragson, Austin Cindric, Michael Annett, Justin Haley, and Austin Dillon finished sixth through 10th respectively.

Reddick leads the Xfinity Series standings by 76 points over Bell.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series will head next to Michigan International Speedway on Sat. June 8.

  • Truex scores second Coca-Cola 600 win at Charlotte

Truex scores second Coca-Cola 600 win at Charlotte

Martin Truex Jr. scored his third win of 2019 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday night, as he won his second Coca-Cola 600 by .330 of a second over Joey Logano. Truex had the dominant car of the evening, leading 116 laps after starting 14th, although he had to overcome a cut tire and contact with the wall on Lap 75 when he brought out the caution while leading.

Truex had his hands full on the last restart with five laps left, when he restarted third behind David Ragan and Ryan Newman after pitting for fresh tires. Third-place finisher Kyle Busch restarted fourth, and after a strong restart, Busch appeared to be in position to take the lead until Truex made a four-wide pass for the lead on the backstretch and didn’t look back. Chase Elliott and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. rounded out the top-five.

“What a hell of a team,” Truex said. “We never gave up on it. I thought we were done. We blew a tire and hit the wall. We never gave up on it. I thought we were done. Just kept fighting, just kept fighting. What a race there at the end. That was pretty wild.”

Logano was disappointed with second place but proud of his team’s efforts.

“The Coke 600 is such a big deal to win,” he said, “especially as a Coke driver. You want to make it happen and we were close, but we’ll just have to wait again to next year and go at it.

“I thought we had a good shot when that caution came back out. That was another chance and just didn’t quite get it, but overall, like I said, very proud of it. As far as Memorial Day Weekend and getting to race is a privilege, so for me to complain about second sounds pretty dumb.  I’m proud to live in this country and I’m happy that I just get to race.”

Busch, who earned his seventh top-five of the season, said, “I thought that through much of the race we had a fast car. We were there. We led some laps, we ran around. The 4 (Harvick) was fast, the 19 (Truex) was fast. The 19 was the fastest car, so I’m not sure what they had different than us, but obviously we were just off a little bit. Otherwise, I felt like we had a race-winning car capable of at least running second, I guess, but overall the red, white and blue M&M’s Camry was fast, and we brought it home where we should have – or close anyway, I think.”

Chris Buescher, Alex Bowman, Jimmie Johnson, William Byron, and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top-10. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series stops at Pocono Raceway next on June 2 at 2 p.m. ET on FS1.

The race had 16 cautions for 80 laps, the majority of which were due to tire issues. Several drivers such as Truex, Denny Hamlin, Erik Jones, Matt DiBenedetto, and Brad Keselowski all made contact with the wall after having tire issues. However, the race’s biggest caution happened on Lap 317 when Clint Bowyer and Kyle Larson made contact that collected Austin and Ty Dillon as well as Ryan Preece. Larson’s and Austin Dillon’s days ended after the incident.

“I just got in there and lost grip and slid up into Clint,” said Larson. “I just hate that I caused the wreck there. I didn’t do a good job on the restart. Just put myself in a bad spot and got sideways.”

The race saw 30 lead changes among 11 drivers, with many on social media proclaiming positive reviews on the event which further enforces the idea that the current aero package is a step in the right direction. This comes after two of the previous three Coke 600s were won by drivers who led over 375 of the 400 laps (Busch won in ’18 after leading 377 laps and Truex won in ’16 after leading 392 laps).

  • Reddick Wins Charlotte For Second Xfinity Win of 2019

Reddick Wins Charlotte For Second Xfinity Win of 2019

Tyler Reddick scored his second win of the 2019 Xfinity Series season when he won Saturday’s Alsco 300 by 2.10 seconds over runner-up Justin Allgaier. Jeffrey Earnhardt took home third place, while rookies Noag Gragson and Justin Haley rounded out the top-five.

The win was the fifth of Reddick’s career and his third on a 1.5-mile speedway. Reddick began the race in third, but managed to lead the most laps (110) on the way to winning the second stage and the race itself, enduring several wild late-race restarts.

“This is a place I didn’t feel good about, I’m not going to lie,” said Reddick. “I was really worried, Charlotte is kind of been the point in my season where things past Charlotte haven’t really gone good. It’s really nice to come into Charlotte, practice good, come into the race, run good, and come away with a win. Hopefully that means the next couple are going to keep rolling this way.”

The win was the eighth top-four finish for the defending series champion.

Christopher Bell began the race on the pole and led 33 laps and won the first stage, but suffered a tire failure and made contact with the wall around the halfway point of the race. He would finish 31st in his second DNF of the season.

Michael Annett, Jeb Burton, Ryan Sieg, Austin Cindric, and Brandon Jones rounded out the top-10.

The day was excessively hot, which led to a slick race track and several front-runners suffered tire issues or made contact with the wall, including Bell, Jones, John Hunter Nemechek, Earnhardt, Chase Briscoe, and outside-polesitter Cole Custer. Several drivers were also overheated during and after the race, including Reddick, Haley, and Earnhardt, who was later taken to the medical center after experiencing dizziness on pit road.

Fourth-place starter Austin Dillon had to relinquish his seat to Cup teammate Daniel Hemric with 40 laps to go when the seat in his Kaulig Racing got too hot and began burning his ribs.

The next race will be June 1 at Pocono Raceway for the Pocono Green 250 at 1 p.m. ET on FS1.

  • William Byron captures pole and sets record for Coca-Cola 600

William Byron captures pole and sets record for Coca-Cola 600

William Bryon earned the Busch Pole Award Thursday evening at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600, becoming the youngest pole winner in the event’s history.

The 21-year-old Charlotte native earned the pole in his Hendrick Motorsports No. 24 Chevrolet with a 183.424 mph lap. It was his second Cup Series pole and the second this season after starting up front for the season-opening Daytona 500.

“This is a dream come true,” Byron said after qualifying. “Obviously I grew up in Charlotte and came to this race every year. So, it’s a dream come true to qualify on the pole with Hendrick Motorsports just across the street and all the hard work and everybody at Chevrolet giving us fast race cars. This is pretty cool. I can’t think of a better way to start the weekend.

“Winning the pole is a good first step for this weekend. After all those nights of running the Summer Shootout and Winter Heat around here (as a child), I spent a lot of time wondering what it would be like to run the big track. It’s really cool (to win the pole on it). I’ve run one (Coca-Cola 600) here and it didn’t go so great, so the one thought I’ve had in my head this week was to make it better this year, because honestly it was miserable last year. I’ve taken that and used it as added motivation for this year. I don’t really like having the ‘youngest’ term attached to me. I’ve always been the young guy. I really just look at myself as a race car driver.”

Aric Almirola will start in second after a lap of 183.069 mph in his No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford.

“I got everything I could out of it,” he said. ” If somebody else gets in there maybe they might be able to do something different, but I felt like I got everything I could out of it. Surprisingly, it was a handful to drive so I’m proud of that lap.”

The defending race winner, Kyle Busch, qualified third in his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota at 182.933 mph. Austin Dillon will start fourth with Kevin Harvick in fifth.

Daniel Suarez, Joey Logano, Clint Bowyer, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and Daniel Hemric round out the top 10 starting positions.

    Jimmie Johnson, with four Coca-Cola 600 wins (2003, 2004, 2005, 2014), will start in 15th.

Tune into the 60th running of the Coca-Cola 600 Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on FOX with radio coverage on PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
