  • No Timing Zone Increase for Bristol

No Timing Zone Increase for Bristol

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The trend of increased timing zones won’t include this weekend’s events at Thunder Valley.

As first reported by Dustin Long of NBC Sports, NASCAR will not increase the number of timing zones for this week’s events at Bristol Motor Speedway. The number will remain at 14 instead of 18. NASCAR decided not to increase them because it’s comfortable with the number of zones in place.

NASCAR has experimented with increased timing zones since the Brickyard 400 race weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The additional timing lines were also used at Pocono Raceway and Watkins Glen International for the Sprint Cup, XFINITY and Truck Series races.

Speeding penalties in the last three races are up 375 percent compared to the previous three races of Daytona, Kentucky and New Hampshire.

In spite of the decision to not increase the timing zones, Bristol is notorious for speeding penalties. The last four Sprint Cup races have averaged roughly 11 speeding penalties issued. The Food City 500 this past April had 17 speeding penalties issued, which remains the highest number of speeding penalties issued in one race this season.

    Race Notes via NASCAR:

6 Races Left Until The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup

Only five Chase berths remain with six races left until the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Pocono, Watkins Glen, Bristol, Michigan, Darlington and Richmond.

A visit to Victory Lane gets a winless driver into the Chase as long as he/she is in the top 30 in the points standings.

The drivers who will get into the Chase because of wins are: Brad Keselowski (4 wins), Kyle Busch (3), Carl Edwards (2), Jimmie Johnson (2), Matt Kenseth (2), Kevin Harvick (1), Kurt Busch (1), Joey Logano (1), Martin Truex Jr. (1), Denny Hamlin (1) and Tony Stewart (1).

Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle and Ryan Newman are the only currently winless drivers who have visited Victory Lane at Pocono Raceway – the site of Sunday’s race.

Below are the remaining tracks after Pocono and winless drivers who have visited Victory Lane at them:

    Watkins Glen: AJ Allmendinger
Bristol: Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kasey Kahne
Michigan: Greg Biffle, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne
    Darlington: Greg Biffle, Regan Smith
Richmond: Dale Earnhardt Jr., Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman

Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Official Clinch Scenarios

Five drivers have officially clinched berths in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup (assuming they start the remaining races in the regular season): Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth.

For this weekend, these drivers have the potential to officially clinch:

    • Kevin Harvick (1 Win, 671 Points, +434 Points Ahead of 31st) – Clinches with a win.
    • Kurt Busch (1 Win, 627 Points, +390 Points Ahead of 31st) – Clinches with a win.
    • Joey Logano (1 Win, 606 Points, +369 Points Ahead of 31st) – Clinches with a win.
    • Martin Truex Jr (1 Win, 573 Points, +336 Points Ahead of 31st) – Clinches with a win.
    • Denny Hamlin (1 Win, 542 Points, +305 Points Ahead of 31st) – Clinches with a win.

All of the above drivers have already clinched a top 30 spot, but need to clear the multiple wins hurdle. So, there’s a decent potential for no clinches this weekend if a zero-win driver wins or an already clinched driver wins.

  • Larson Slides to Victory at Eldora

Larson Slides to Victory at Eldora

While he didn’t have the dominant truck all night and was at one point trapped down a lap, Kyle Larson regained his lost lap, passed the dominant truck late in the going and scored the victory on the dirt of Eldora.

After being penalized a lap for “intentionally bringing out a caution” early at Eldora Speedway, the driver of the No. 24 GMS Racing Chevrolet rallied back to take the lead from Bobby Pierce late in the race to win the Aspen Dental Dirt Derby. It’s his second victory in 12 Camping World Truck Series starts, his second top-10 finish of the season and the second in three starts at Eldora.

Christopher Bell came home runner-up in his No. 4 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota. It’s his seventh top-10 finish of the season and second top-10 in two starts. Rico Abreu rounded out the podium in his No. 98 ThorSport Racing Toyota. Jake Griffin finished fourth in his No. 11 Red Horse Racing Toyota while Tyler Reddick rounded out the top-five in his No. 29 Brad Keselowski Racing Ford.

Cole Custer came home sixth in his No. 00 JR Motorsports Chevrolet followed by Cameron Hayley who finished seventh in his No. 13 TSR Toyota. Daniel Hemric finished eighth in his No. 19 BKR Ford. Austin Wayne Self finished ninth in his No. 22 AM Racing Toyota as Matt Crafton rounded out the top-10 in his No. 88 TSR Toyota.

Pierce, who led 102 laps, found his car stuck in fourth gear just as he was leading the race late in the going, finished 25th and exited the race after crashing out.

Fifteen trucks finished the race on the lead lap and 27 were running at the finish.

The race lasted one hour, 47 minutes and 13 seconds at an average speed of 41.971 mph. There were three lead changes among two different drivers and nine cautions for 52 laps.

William Byron leaves Rossburg, Ohio with a nine-point lead over Crafton in the points standings.

The next race for the Camping World Truck Series is July 30 at Pocono Raceway.

    Race and Qualifying Notes:

Qualifying: The qualifying order will be set by a random draw. Qualifying will consist of a two lap run by a single truck. The driver with the fastest time will win the Keystone Light Pole Award, but they are not guaranteed the pole position in the race. Instead, qualifying will determine all starting positions for the five qualifying races and the qualifying races themselves will set the lineup for the race.

Qualifying Races: There will be five qualifying races, 10 laps each race. Only green flag laps will count. The lineup for these races is based on the speeds from the Keystone Light Pole Qualifying. The top five finishers from each of the qualifying races will automatically transfer to the race, for a total of 25 trucks.

Last Chance Qualifying Race: This race will consist of 15 green flag laps. The lineup will be based on finishing positions from the qualifying races. The top two trucks will transfer to the race and will fill positions 26 and 27 for the race.

Lineup for Remaining Positions: Positions 28-31 will be filled by the highest-ranking eligible trucks as determined by owner points for those who have not already earned a position through the qualifying process. The 32nd and final spot will go to the most recent eligible past series champion. If it is not filled by an eligible champion, it will be filled based on owner points.

The Race: The race will be divided into three segments of 40, 50 and 60 laps. There will be competition cautions after the first and second segments. Caution laps will not count during the competition cautions and positions cannot be improved on pit road. The teams are not required to pit during these competition cautions. Trucks that remain on the track and do not pit will restart in front of those that pit.

  • Austin Hill Earns Fourth Consecutive Top-20 Finish of 2016 Season

Austin Hill Earns Fourth Consecutive Top-20 Finish of 2016 Season

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Driver Finishes 18th at Kentucky Speedway

SPARTA, KY. (July 8, 2016) – Austin Hill earned his fourth consecutive Top-20 finish of the 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season with an 18th place finish in the Buckle Up In Your Truck 225 at Kentucky Speedway.

Hill turned his first ever laps at Kentucky Speedway during Wednesday’s practice sessions, piloting the No. 02 Ford F-150.

After taking to Turns 1 and 2 of the newly repaved surface almost immediately, Hill and the team made a series of adjustments during the two sessions to help the truck turn better through the center of Turns 3 and 4. While many teams used the final practice session on the newly repaved surface to focus on their qualifying setup, the team chose to focus on how the truck would handle during race conditions. Hill ended final practice 24th fastest, confident in how the truck would race the following evening and told the team the truck “felt faster and more stable through the turn than it has all year.”

After qualifying 19th for Thursday night’s race Hill expertly avoided several early race incidents, and the team elected to pit under caution for adjustments to help the handling of the truck. After restarting 20th on Lap 35, Hill reported that the handling of the truck was much better. The improvements showed on the track as Hill climbed through the field, running as high as eighth place when the caution flew just shy of the halfway mark.

The final caution of the night flew on Lap 104 and the team made their final pit stop for four tires and fuel. The handling of the No. 02 fell off in the last 40 laps of the race and Hill fought to remain on the lead lap, bringing home an 18th place finish.

“The truck was really good after we made adjustments on the first pit stop,” said Hill. “It got tighter and tighter over the course of the race, especially off of Turn 4, and it made it difficult to race around anybody. An 18th place finish isn’t what we were hoping for but we’ll take it and move forward.”

Hill’s next NCWTS race will be the Pocono Mountains 150 at Pocono Raceway on Saturday, July 30 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Fans can follow Hill on social media for updates at Austin Hill Racing (Facebook), @_AustinHill (Twitter) and @_Austin_Hill_ (Instagram).

  • Changes Made to Kentucky Speedway

    Changes Made to Kentucky Speedway

SPARTA, Ky. — The repave wasn’t the only change made to the racing surface at Kentucky Speedway.

It was announced back in early-January that the 1.5-mile facility would undergo its first repave in its 17-year history. In addition, they changed the degree of the banking in Turns 1 and 2, narrowed the width of the turns, improved drainage and added over 3,000 feet of SAFER barrier.

The repave was completed in May. In total, 17,000 tons of asphalt was poured to form the new surface by Ohio Valley Asphalt. The asphalt used is a “standard” racing asphalt mix that’s been tweaked to “age the track” faster.

The finished product was 29,700 feet of added drainage pipes, an addition of 3,200 feet of SAFER barrier for a total of 11,300 feet, all added by Southern Bleacher and Seal Pro. The pit exit lane and apron in Turns 1 and 2 were widened from 14 to 30-feet, Turns 1 and 2 were narrowed from 74 to 56 feet and banking increased from 14 to 17 degrees both of which were done by Baker’s Construction Services.

The changes in Turns 1 and 2 were done because the previous pit exit lane was very narrow and made merging back onto the racing surface difficult.

“Modifying Turns 1 and 2 will present an exciting challenge to the drivers while addressing issues of the track surface, SAFER barrier, and drainage will improve safety, which is always our  paramount concern,” said Mark Simendinger, general manager of Kentucky Speedway.

After blistering was seen during a tire test held at the track in mid-June, Goodyear has decided to bring harder tires for use during the race weekend.
