Custer Makes His Stand – Youngest Winner in NASCAR

Cole Custer out dueled some veterans of the Camping World Truck Series on a restart with four laps remaining to become the youngest victor in a NASCAR touring series. Custer is 16 years, 7 months and 28 days old and on this day his truck was the class of the field.  Late in the race, on lap 147 of the 175 lap race, a caution was called when the No. 63  truck of Jr. Heffner was helped into the wall by the No. 9 truck of Brennan Newberry.

Custer was called into the pits for tires and fuel while the No. 51 truck of Erik Jones stayed out. Many other trucks including Matt Crafton only took two tires while Custer’s crew chief, Joe Shear Jr., opted to put four fresh tires on the dominant truck of the day. There were several more caution periods and Custer closed in on the leaders until the pinnacle restart with four to go. With Crafton leading and Custer lining up right next to him it appeared that Crafton spun his tires on the restart. As he and Custer went into turn one, Bubba Wallace dove low making it three-wide and Custer came out with the lead, Wallace in second and Crafton in third and that was how they finished. Johnny Sauter came in fourth and John Hunter Nemecheck rounded out the top five.

Custer started on the pole and led the majority of the race. “I was really worried,” Custer said in victory lane.” It was so hard to pass, even lappers. I couldn’t believe we got through all of those guys. The air affected it so much. We had some great restarts, which helped us a lot. I can’t believe it’s happening right now.”

Sitting on the pit road wall after the race Crafton was clearly unhappy with himself. “Started at the back, drove to the front, got beat at the end,” Crafton said.” I spun the tires and couldn’t get it in fourth gear, to be totally honest. Once I spun the tires, I was screwed right there. Then I couldn’t get it in gear, and everybody had a run on me. My bad.” Crafton started at the back due to reported electrical problems with his truck during qualifying.

Wallace, who finished third, said after the race, “Once again I would have had to wreck him to get by him. I think I gave it up a little too much into (turn) three  — when he got clear, could have got to him on the bumper.  Four tires prevailed for him (Cole Custer).  So, congratulations to Cole.  I told him he’d get the pole.  The kid is always fast so it’s always cool to see a new winner. I just hate a Toyota wasn’t in victory lane. Our Toyota Care Tundra was okay. We were a top-three truck — a top-five truck at the beginning of the race. Just couldn’t get off the corner, but we saw some stuff late in the race. We’ll go on to Las Vegas. Proud of my guys. They never gave up. Pit stops were incredible. Gained us some spots, just come up one spot short. I’m pumped. I’m all good. We’ll go on to Vegas with our Toyota Care Tundra and be ready to win.”

Custer was asked if he believed this was happening and he replied, “I’ve been coming since I was really young. Really young, I just can’t believe it.”

  • Keselowski Wins At Chicagoland, Takes Early-Chase Lead

Keselowski Wins At Chicagoland, Takes Early-Chase Lead

A late-race battle between a rookie and three previous Chicagoland winners ended in Brad Keselowski capturing the checkered flag in his series-leading fifth win of the 2014 Sprint Cup season.

Keselowski’s victory, which guarantees the 2012 Cup champion a spot in the Chase’s Contender Round, was also Ford’s first win in 14 Chicagoland Speedway races.

Late in the race, however, the rookie Kyle Larson seemed a serious threat for his first Sprint Cup win. Long bouts of side-by-side racing between Larson and Kevin Harvick for the lead accompanied the final 20 laps . While inaugural Chicagoland winner Harvick seemed the man to beat, when Larson caught the veteran he proved that even a rookie can engage in a tight but clean race for a win.

But the 2012 Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski saw the battle for the lead as an invitation to make his own move. Cutting between the two California drivers, Keselowski took the lead with 15 laps to go and held on to it.

Keselowski seemed to appear out of nowhere. With 80 laps to go, Keselowski restarted in 16th place due to an extra pit stop under caution. Bogged down by slower competitors, he decisively made moves through traffic until catching and passing the battling leaders.

A caution caused by an accident between Danica Patrick and Ricky Stenhouse led to a restart with six laps to go. Keselowski re-established a comfortable lead, which he held until passing under the checkered flag in first place.

Despite losing too much distance to make up before the race’s finish, Larson was given another opportunity to show off his skills, as Jeff Gordon invited him to another tight duel for second place. The two drivers engaged in another clean battle in the closing laps of the race, at one point swapping low and high race lines as they crossed the start/finish line, putting on a spectacle for the fans. Gordon eventually secured the spot and finished second, while Larson notched third. The rookie managed to capture his Top-3 finish despite a hard hit in practice that sent him to a backup car for race day.

Keselowski’s Team Penske counterpart Joey Logano finished fourth, and Kevin Harvick dropped back to eventually finish fifth.

Keselowski holds a seven point lead over Jeff Gordon in the standings heading into the second race of the Challenger Round in the Chase, next Sunday at New Hampshire.

Chase drivers Aric Almirola, Ryan Newman, Greg Biffle and A.J. Allmendinger did not fare well, and as a result are the final four drivers in the Chase group, in danger of the cut-off after the next two races.

Newman, Allmendinger and Biffle finished 15th, 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Almirola finished 41st after engine failure while running in sixth place.

  • Kyle Busch Captures Sixth Truck Series Win of the Season at Chicagoland Speedway

Kyle Busch Captures Sixth Truck Series Win of the Season at Chicagoland Speedway

Kyle Busch battled his way to the front after starting near the rear of the field, leading 66 of 150 laps in the Lucas Oil 225, to claim his sixth NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race of the season in only eight starts. It’s his 41st career victory in the series and also Busch’s fourth win in five starts at Chicagoland Speedway.

“We had a really fast (No. 51) Dollar General Tundra,” Busch said. “Being in victory lane feels good. Dollar General, all their support, all their racing programs that they put on, is really awesome for us at KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports). We’ll see if we can’t see Erik Jones get a couple of wins here to close out the year.”

Matt Crafton, driver of the No. 88 Splash-FVP/Menards Toyota, finished second, led 14 laps and is the new series points leader, by five points over Johnny Sauter.

“All in all, not a bad night,” Crafton said. “We had a lot of short run speed early, the first two runs. The last run we just tightened it up a little bit too much I think.”

Austin Dillon was third, followed by Tyler Reddick in fourth. This was Reddick’s best finish of the season; his previous best finish was eighth at Dover. Jeb Burton finished fifth followed by  Darrell Wallace Jr. in sixth. Ben Kennedy, Joey Coulter, Joe Nemechek and Bryan Silas finished in seventh through 10th, respectively.

Johnny Sauter finished 14th and is now second in the points standings. Ryan Blaney (-16), Darrell Wallace (-35) and German Quiroga (-59) round out the top five in the standings.

The Camping World Truck Series travels to New Hampshire Motor Speedway next Saturday for the UNOH 175 (1 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1).

  • Ryan Blaney Edges out Quiroga to Win Chevrolet Silverado 250 at CTMP

Ryan Blaney Edges out Quiroga to Win Chevrolet Silverado 250 at CTMP

German Quiroga gave it all that he had, but it’d be Ryan Blaney edging him out at the line by 0.049 seconds to score the victory in the Chevrolet Silverado 250 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Sunday afternoon.

It marks the first victory of the 2014 season for Blaney and the third victory of his career. It also marks the second straight win for Brad Keselowski Racing after Brad Keselowski won at Bristol Motor Speedway last Wednesday.

“That was a lot of fun racing with German,” Blaney commented post-race. “We raced really hard and really clean, and that’s how racing should be. It was so much fun racing with him. I felt in the back of my mind that we were going to be close on fuel and I kept watching my fuel gauge the last seven laps or so and it would bounce to red every now and again but luckily I held on to it and Chad did a good job calculating fuel mileage. We didn’t qualify really good, but great call and strategy as it paid off in the end. That was a lot of fun. We had a good truck here last year but unfortunately broke and weren’t able to really run up there. This year to be able to win is really cool. We only get to run one road course a year and it was so much fun. It’s a fun course to run and a great win.”

The caution flew with 14 laps to go for Alex Tagliani spinning. Blaney would get a good restart, but Quiroga would stay close right on his tailgate. Blaney would make a mistake in turn one, allowing Quiroga to close the gap even further. As the pair raced around the 11-turn course, Quiroga was able to make his move in turn eight to attempt to make the pass. Blaney would then pull the crossover, before out drag racing Quiroga to the line.

Quiroga’s second place finish marks his ninth top-10 finish of the year as he continues to search for his first career victory. At one point, fans were predicting a repeat of the last lap contact with Ty Dillon and Chase Elliott last year.

“You never know what could happen,” Quiroga commented. “I like to race guys hard and clean. I really enjoyed that battle. I didn’t want to wreck him.”

Erik Jones would out-duel Gray Gaulding in the final laps as the pair traded third back and forth multiple times while Quebec native Andrew Ranger rounded out the top-five.

“It was a good battle,” Jones commented post-race. “We fell off there at the end. I don’t know if I burned my stuff up there trying to run down German, or the pressures were just too low and didn’t come back up. It was a tough battle to hold him off there at the end. To be able to hold him off at the end is great for a good finish, and helps get us turned around after a rough deal past couple of weeks in the owner’s standings.”

Matt Crafton finished sixth, followed by Brennan Newberry, Johnny Sauter, Cole Custer and Timothy Peters. Sauter now leads Crafton by seven points

Pole sitter Alex Tagliani would finish 16th after spinning Cole Custer out with 19 laps to go, before going for a spin by his lonesome and stalling the truck with 14 laps to go.

  • Alex Tagliani Wins Truck Series Pole at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

Alex Tagliani Wins Truck Series Pole at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

Alex Tagliani won the Keystone Light Pole Award and set a new track qualifying record at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park with a lap of 80.558 seconds at 109.889 mph. As he leads the field to green in Sunday’s Chevrolet Silverado 250 race, he will also be making his debut in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Tagliani competes in the Canadian Tire Series and has one previous start in the series at this track in 2008 where he finished in fifth place. He also competes in IndyCar.

After qualifying he talked about his preparation for qualifying and racing this weekend.

“We went out, the truck was fast from the get go,” he said. “We had just one little glitch we had to fix, we had some fuel pressure issues. Basically it took about 25 minutes to fix that and then we went and ran and made sure that everything was good. We parked it before the session was over, the guys were happy enough. We used the second practice getting ready for the race tomorrow.”

Tagliani also spoke about being part of the Brad Keselowski Racing team saying, “I feel really honored to be here and drive his truck.”

NASCAR Next driver Gray Gaulding will start beside him on the outside pole. Erik Jones will begin the race in the third position followed by German Quiroga Jr. and Cole Custer to round out the top five.

Several drivers had difficulties keeping their trucks on the track including third place finisher Jones who went off track during qualifying. Joey Coulter, who drove his No. 21 into the tire barriers, qualified in the 15th position. Ryan Blaney, who will start 14th, got sideways and Matt Crafton had similar issues but will begin the race in eighth place.

Series’ point leader Johnny Sauter will start the race from the 11th position.

The Chevrolet Silverado 250 is scheduled for Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET, with television coverage on FOX Sports 1.

  • Brad Keselowski Breaks Through in UNOH 200 for First NCWTS Win at Bristol

Brad Keselowski Breaks Through in UNOH 200 for First NCWTS Win at Bristol

Brad Keselowski doesn’t have to hear the words “winless in the truck series” again as after the UNOH 200 presented by ZLOOP at Bristol Motor Speedway, the 2012 Sprint Cup Series Champion can call himself a winner in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

“It means a lot, as a driver. I don’t want to understate that,” Keselowski said. “My family has been part of this series since its inception – from a kid watching to now here as a driver and owner. I wasn’t able to get there before because I chose to do it the hard way; a lot of people know I do things the hard way. We’re here and I’m proud of everyone that got me here. I’m proud as a driver – I don’t want to understate it – but there are a lot of young guys on this team that are aspiring Cup mechanics and work through it.”

Keselowski would pass Kyle Busch for the lead with 71 laps to go before holding off both Kyle Busch Motorsports teammates Busch and Darrell Wallace Jr. in the final laps as he battled through the lapped trucks. Keselowski becomes the 25th driver to win in all three of NASCAR’s national series, while he and his father Bob Keselowski become the first father/son duo to win races in the Camping World Truck Series.

Wallace Jr. tried everything possible in the book in the final sprint to the checkered, getting all the way up to Keselowski’s back bumper, but was unable to get by as he finished second for his seventh top 10 finish of the season.

“Trying to gather myself, trying to replay every option. We finished second and I wish I could take it back and try again,” he commented post-race. I would’ve had to wreck him to win, and I respect Brad too much to do it. We had to get on it on the restart, and tried to get right up there and came up just short. It felt good to pass the 51 (Busch), though. We’ll go to Canada, figure out how to turn right and have some fun.”

Ron Hornaday finished third, followed by the ThorSport Racing teammates Matt Crafton and Johnny Sauter.

“We fought loose, loose the whole time since the very first run,” Crafton said. “We made an adjustment near the end and just stepped over the line, and were a little tight. We just needed track position at the end as we probably would’ve had something for him.”

“I tried to go to the top, and I was just too free,” Sauter commented. “I was just committed to the bottom and we were decent on the long run, but just way too free. We made an adjustment before with a spring to make it free to race at night, but couldn’t go back on that. A wise man told us that if you can’t win at Bristol, finish the race so that’s what we did.”

John Hunter Nemechek finished sixth to tie his best career finish for the third time this season.

“It was a lot of fun,” the teenager said. “We had a great truck today. It seemed the longer we ran, the more it came. I can’t thank all these guys enough for this truck. We ended up better than I thought that we did.”

Joey Coulter would battle through a sinus infection to finish seventh.

“I think I was the only one that was glad it rained, because it let me get another good night sleep,” he commented. “These guys don’t have any quit in them. It doesn’t matter how rough qualifying or the practice is, they keep laughing with jokes and it keeps me pumped up.”

Cole Custer would finish eighth, followed by Ben Rhodes and Corey Lajoie. Busch would have a flat tire after contact with the wall with 26 laps to go, resulting in a green flag pit stop and a 24th place finish. Gray Gaulding also had a flat tire with 20 laps to go while running inside the top 10, finishing 23rd.

With his top-five finish, Sauter keeps the points lead, eight points ahead of Crafton, 17 ahead of Hornaday, heading into next weekend’s race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.

“We just need to go there and be smart,” he commented. “I had fun with it last year and look forward to getting up there and seeing a lot of great race fans.”

NCWTS UNOH 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway Postponed Until Thursday Morning

As a result of a heavy rain falling Wednesday evening from 8:30 p.m. ET on and not letting up, NASCAR made the decision to postpone the UNOH 200 presented by ZLOOP to Thursday morning at 10 a.m. ET. Fox Sports 1 announced at the end of their broadcast that they will carry the race live. The race will also air on  MRN.com and   SiriusXM.com/NASCAR.

When the race goes green tomorrow, Kyle Busch will lead the field to the green as he hopes to find victory lane at Bristol Motor Speedway for the fifth time in the Camping World Truck Series. He will be joined on the front row by Cole Custer, who is running a limited schedule this year. In his four starts thus far this year, Custer has not finished outside of the top 15 once.
