  • Busch Overcomes Penalty to Win Truck Race in Charlotte

Busch Overcomes Penalty to Win Truck Race in Charlotte

Kyle Busch hadn’t won a Camping World Series truck race in his last seven starts but at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Friday night he overcame a pit road penalty to win the North Carolina Education Lottery 200.

On lap 84 Busch had come into the pits for a fuel only stop and the gas can was caught in the receiver and left the pit box meaning he had a pass-through penalty. At that point Busch had dominated the race leading 66 laps but he had to restart in the rear of the field.

Busch used the penalty to get fresh tires and charged through the field with the aid of some caution periods due to accidents.
“It was an eternity… the starts were spread over a year and half,” Busch said about his winless streak. “It certainly was frustrating last year that (his crew chief) Eric (Phillips) and I weren’t able to get to Victory Lane. We only ran three starts, and in all of those three starts, we were a really good truck and had a shot to win in all three of those.”

“We’ve been fast. These guys do a good job, (crew chief) Rudy (Fugle) here, taking over for my stuff on the No. 51 with a smaller team…it’s only him and a couple of other guys that are full-time for it… These guys do a lot of work for being so small and just coming out here trying to knock out some wins.”

Brendan Gaughan finished second, Max Gresham third while Matt Crafton and Ty Dillon rounded out the top five.

Matt Crafton retained his points lead leaving Charlotte while Jeb Burton moved into second place, 22 points behind Crafton

  • Matt Crafton Wins Crash Fest At Kansas Speedway

Matt Crafton Wins Crash Fest At Kansas Speedway

Matt Crafton stormed to the victory for the Camping World Truck Series tonight, holding off Joey Coulter in the late stages of the race.  This is Crafton’s first win of the 2013 season and fourth top 10 finish.

“It’s huge,” Crafton said. “Yesterday we were 18th average on the second practice and we were a 20th place truck at best — to be honest.  They changed so much on this truck — you always hear people say it, but they changed four springs, sway bar, sway bar arms — I mean tons of stuff.  There’s a bunch more stuff that they changed that would probably lose everybody, but they made a whole sale change and what that comes down to is teamwork and believing in each other and then going out there and doing it.”

It was Crafton’s first win since 2011 at Iowa.  Crafton took the lead with 42 laps to go with a three-wide pass and held off the charge of Joey Coulter to take the win.

“The show was so awesome — it was a great race,” Crafton continued. “My spotter told me where Joey (Coulter) was a little bit and he had a very, very fast truck.  I think track position was everything and it was whoever got out front.  We contemplated and contemplated on that last restart because we had talked about it earlier on the red flag — where would you start if you were leading this race at the end?  They said the outside early and then the yellow comes out and we’re leading and I said, ‘Where do you guys want to start?’  They said, ‘That’s up to you.’  (Carl) Joiner (crew chief) thinks inside and I went outside.  Then he could blame me after that.  The bottom — you could get sucked around so easy and I wanted to be on the outside to be able to control it.”

Joey Coulter would hold on for second for his first top five of the season.

“It was wide open out there, doing whatever I could do,” Coulter said. “I could pull him off a corner, it all equaled out. Great day for the 18 tundra. Everybody did an awesome job on pit road. We got caught a lap down but we’re able to get back and Harold – he pulled off some great pit strategy.”

Rookie Ryan Blaney passed Brendan Gaughan in the final trip down the backstretch while points leader Johnny Sauter finished fifth.

Defending champion and pole sitter James Buescher would lead the most laps – 55 – on the way to finishing sixth. It marks his first top 10 of the season. Darrell Wallace Jr. would finish seventh, followed by Ty Dillon, Ron Hornaday Jr. and Timothy Peters.

The race was a crashed filled event with 11 cautions, that saw only 17 cars out of 36 starters finish the race. The most frightening of those incidents came on lap 121, involving Todd Bodine, Brennan Newberry and Bryan Silas and resulted in a 12 minute red flag to clear the track of debris that covered nearly one whole end of the track.

Sauter continues to lead the standings, 12 points ahead of Matt Crafton.

Kyle Larson Wins in a Dash to the Finish at Rockingham Speedway

Kyle Larson held off a hard charging Joey Logano to capture the win at the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at The Rock Sunday afternoon. This was his first NASCAR national series win in five NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts and his first top-ten finish in 2013. Larson currently drives full-time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Larson was dominant all afternoon, leading 187 laps, but the biggest threat came in the last 25 laps of the race.

Logano had dropped to 18th after he had to pit under green to fix loose lug nuts. But a caution on lap 180 gave Logano the lucky break he needed to make a final pit stop and put on four fresh tires. He methodically made his way to the front and was in second place when the last caution fell.

“I was passing a ton of cars on the newer tires,” Logano said. “That’s Rockingham for you. That’s what makes this race track so cool, because you can play a strategy like that. When we got the last caution, I thought it was playing out perfect for us.”

    Larson was apprehensive, but determined.

“I was pretty nervous on that last restart because Joey was on a lot newer tires than me, and I’m not normally the best on restarts.”

It was the veteran Logano, however, who made the mistake on the green-white-checkered start.

“I just got beat. I spun my tires, so it was all my fault. I was so mad at myself. I felt like we should have won this race. We might not have had the truck to win, but we had the strategy to win.”

Larson was all smiles after the race.

“It was a great day,” he said. “We didn’t make any changes to the truck; it was perfect from the start. It was a lot of fun today.”

Joey Logano finished in second place. Brendan Gaughan, Johnny Sauter and Chase Elliot rounded out the top five.

Johnny Sauter remains the unofficial points leader. Jeb Burton is 16 points behind in second place. Matt Crafton is third followed by Ron Hornaday Jr. in fourth and Ryan Blaney in fifth.

Hornaday met with NASCAR after the race and may face further sanctions for wrecking Darrell Wallace Jr. under caution during the final laps of the race.

Wallace finished a disappointing 27th.  Hornaday was penalized at the time of the incident for aggressive driving and sent to the rear of the field. He finished the race in 15th place.

Larson holds off Logano and wins at The Rock

Kyle Larson held off Joey Logano on the final green-white-checkered restart in Sunday’s North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Rockingham Speedway and captured his first victory in just five NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) races.

Logano who was battling back from being a lap down early in the race due to a loose wheel, restarted in 18th place and diced his way through the field.  Logano was gaining on Larson as the laps were winding down.  But contact between Timothy Peters and Ryan Sieg brought out the final caution flag of the day with two laps remaining.

With fresher tires and more experience, Logano looked to be in the drivers seat when the race restarted.  But Larson got a great restart as Logano spun his tires and pulled out to a two car length lead.  The lead was just enough to hold off Logano for the final two laps.

“I’m usually not the best on restarts, so I was surprised I got that good of a start.” Larson said.

“I just got beat. I was waiting for him to do something on the restart and he didn’t do what I expected him to do.” Logano said. ”I spun my tires and cost these guys the race.”

Logano finished second, Brendan Gaughan third, Johnny Sauter fourth and Chase Elliott finished fifth.

“It was fun as always — probably one of the best race tracks we go to all year.  I can’t thank Andy Hillenburg (track president) enough and everybody.  Our Carolina Nut Company/Curb Records Toyota was really, really strong.” Sauter said.

During the final caution flag, Ron Hornaday Jr. spun out Darrell Wallace Jr.  Wallace’s car suffered heavy damage and was taken to the garage.  Hornaday Jr. was sent to the end of the longest line.

“He just flat out wrecked us.  It’s unfortunate!  It was fun, we just couldn’t hit it all weekend.  Put it up to the top with that last restart and we were making up some ground.  Got to him and he wasn’t going to give me the top so I knew what to do.  I had to take his line away.  I didn’t put him in the fence or anything and he just pulls that bonehead move.” Wallace Jr. said.

Hornaday Jr. was asked by NASCAR to meet with them after the race to discuss wrecking Wallace Jr. under caution.

“I didn’t know the yellow was out and I got down in there and started racing on the back straightaway, and he slowed up and then I run into him a little bit.  But down the back, I went over to the other side and I don’t know if he hit his brakes on me or whatever, but I turned him in the fence and I feel like a total idiot.” Hornaday Jr. said.

Johnny Sauter leads the point standings by 16 points over rookie Jeb Burton who finished seventh.

Jeb Burton Wins the Pole and Sets New Track Record at Rockingham Speedway

Jeb Burton continues the momentum at Rockingham Speedway by winning the Keystone 21 Means 21 Pole Award in today’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. This is his second consecutive pole and also set a new track record with a speed of 146.909 mph in the No. 4 Arrowhead Chevrolet.

This is the same truck that Kasey Kahne drove to victory last year in the inaugural North Carolina Education Lottery 200.

James Buescher will start on the outside pole.  Last spring, he finished the race in second place and is hoping to capture his fifth win today.

Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott and Matt Crafton complete the top five in the starting lineup.

Today’s race will be Crafton’s 297th consecutive start and will replace a record previously held by Terry Cook.

Ryan Blaney will begin the race from the sixth position, followed by Joey Logano in seventh place. Dakoda Armstrong, Brendan Gaughan and Darrell Wallace Jr. will round out the top ten starting positions.

The green flag will wave at 2:18 p.m. for the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at The Rock when track president, Andy Hillenburg, gives the command, “Drivers, start your engines.”

  • Two-for-Two: Johnny Sauter wins Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway

Two-for-Two: Johnny Sauter wins Kroger 200 at Martinsville Speedway

After suffering through some bad luck last year, Johnny Sauter is off to a strong start in 2013, having now won the first two races of the season. Sauter becomes the second driver in Truck Series to open up the season with back-t0-back victories; Mark Martin was the first to do so in 2006. It marks the eighth victory of Sauter’s truck series career.

Sauter would take the lead from young Jeb Burton on a late race restart with 17 laps to go and never look back to take the victory.

I just tried to time it just right – that’s the key,” Sauter said in victory lane. “So proud of everybody on this Toyota. All of our sponsors, all of the guys at ThorSport. They’ve been working hard in the shop. It was a long day. Tire wear was the main deal

“Two for two, starting out is just unbelievable.”

Sauter’s teammate Matt Crafton would get by Burton with five to go for second to make it a one-two finish for ThorSport Racing for his second straight top 10 finish of 2013 and 12th top 10 finish at Martinsville.

“We’re going to be a championship contending team,” he said. “Our truck was terrible the first run, but it just shows how good these guys are as we were good at the end.”

20-year-old Jeb Burton would hold on to third after starting on the pole and running inside the top five most of the day.

“We just lost forward bite coming off the corner,” he said. “Just couldn’t stay with them at the end. But it was a good truck all day. It was just awesome from the beginning.”

Timothy Peters would finish fourth, followed by outside pole-sitter Darrell Wallace Jr. in fifth.

Chase Elliott, son of Bill Elliott, would finish sixth in his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start. Dakota Armstrong finished seventh, followed by Ryan Seig, Erik Jones and Ron Hornaday. Hornaday made his way back up to 10th after being spun by Burton while battling for the lead on lap 104.

“I’m a rookie, live and learn,” Burton said. “I didn’t mean to wreck him (Hornaday)…sorry about that”

Todd Bodine would finish 11th after being spun by Kevin Harvick with 23 laps to go. Harvick was running up front late in the race when he had a flat tire, causing him to fall back through the field.

The 200 lap race at Martinsville resulted in 10 different cautions with the first coming on lap 58 for Grant Galloway going for a spin. He would also bring out the third caution on lap 86 after another spin, followed by a third spin for the sixth caution with 107 laps to go. Galloway would finish 27th.

The second caution came out on lap 70 for German Quiroga putting down fluid through turns one and two with a gear problem while running inside the top seven. Quiroga would finish 29th.

The fifth caution came out with 120 laps to go when Robert Bruce would go around. He would finish the race 28th.

The seventh caution came out on lap 158 when Hornaday, Tim George Jr. and Galloway went around all together in turn two. George Jr. finished 22nd.

Max Gresham went around in turn two for the eighth caution with 55 laps to go. Gresham would finish 30th.

With 44 laps to go, Crafton got into John Wes Townley, causing Townley to make heavy contact with the outside turn four wall for the ninth caution. Townley would finish 32nd.

Sauter continues to lead the points, 12 points ahead of Jeb Burton.

The next race for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is at Rockingham Speedway next weekend.

Jeb Burton scores first career pole at Martinsville Speedway

At the end of Camping World Truck Series qualifying, it’d be Jeb Burton scoring his first career pole in his seventh career truck start. The 20-year-old lapped the track in 19.589 seconds, 96.666 mph.

“I was crying like a baby when I got out of that race car. It means a whole lot to me and my family,” said Burton, son of former Daytona 500 winner Ward Burton. “It’s really cool for my sponsor to have out of South Boston too. I worked really hard to get here. I’m really happy.

“I knew if I won or got the pole, I’m going to be emotional — anywhere, especially here. Like I said, it means something to me. I live it. I eat it. I sleep it. It’s just a passion of mine and I’m just thankful to be in front of you all right now.”

Burton broke the old track record that was held by Timothy Peters. Peters held the record previous with a lap of 19.641 seconds, 96.641 mph.

Burton will be joined on the front row by fellow rookie Darrell Wallace Jr., who is a graduate of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program.

“We just have to do our best on pit road and get the adjustments right and what the truck needs to be able to put us up front,” Wallace Jr. said. “Every track you go to pretty much is about saving tires.  Hopefully, we can do that or I can do that just well enough to keep us up front.  Track position is key, but you have to have your tires stay on there to have good track position.  We’ll work hard to get that and we’ll see how it goes.”

Peters would qualify third for his 10th top 10 start at Martinsville Speedway.

“When my crew chief called out the lap time I was pretty blown away, but I knew there was still a bunch more good trucks to come,” Peters said. “Being that qualifying is on Friday evening I was surprised with the lap times and what they were.  In the past we’ve qualified in very cool temperatures on Saturday morning where you would think there was more grip.”

Daytona winner Johnny Sauter and German Quiroga rounded out the top five.

Ty Dillon was sixth, followed by Matt Crafton, Chase Elliott, Ron Hornaday Jr. and Brennan Newberry.

The truck race will take place tomorrow afternoon at Martinsville Speedway.
