Harvick wins the NCWTS VFW 200 at Michigan

Kevin Harvick held off Timothy Peters on the final green-white-checkered restart in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) VFW 200 and won at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday.

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”233″][/media-credit]This was Harvick’s second consecutive win in the truck series and the 11th of his career.

“This has always been a fun racetrack for us, but honestly, as a program, we’ve had some struggles here over the years. Today, we were really loose at the beginning of the race and the guys did a great job making huge changes to the truck to get it to where I could drive it.” Harvick said.

Mark Martin was leading during the restart on lap 89. Martin and Parker Kligerman got together as Kligerman got loose. Kligerman clipped the rear of Martin, sending him spinning and pole-sitter Matt Crafton crashed into him. Austin Dillon was also involved, he T-boned Kligerman’s truck.

“We had a run on the 2 (Kevin Harvick) down the back, but he can cut through the center better than we could with our Tundra. Great points day. How about Miguel, great run for him and his Stemco Duroline Tundra as well.” second place finisher Peters said.

Miguel Paludo finished third, James Buescher fourth and David Starr finished fifth.

“Today was a great day for us. We had an awesome truck — this is the same truck we used at Dover with a new body. These guys did great. We did small adjustments. I was on the longer runs a little bit snug and then I was perfect. I couldn’t get (Kevin) Harvick on the second restart but I went and raced with him. I’m really proud of my guys on this Stemco-Duroline Toyota Tundra.” Paludo said.

Johnny Sauter leads in the series standings over James Buescher by five points.

  • Kevin Harvick Survives Two Day Pocono Truck Marathon for First Season Win

Kevin Harvick Survives Two Day Pocono Truck Marathon for First Season Win

In a rain-delayed race at Pocono Raceway, lasting from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning, one driver, Kevin Harvick, survived the marathon to take the checkered flag. This is Harvick’s first victory in the Truck Series in 2011.

[media-credit name=”Kirk Schroll” align=”alignright” width=”207″][/media-credit]The driver of the No. 2 Ollie’s Bargain Outlet Chevrolet, for team owner and wife DeLana Harvick, won the 2nd Annual Good Sam RV Emergency Road Service 125, securing his 10th victory in 110 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races.

“You just hope that the truck didn’t screw itself up overnight,” Harvick said of the marathon race event. “Luckily it was fast and we were able to manage our fuel.

    “It didn’t detune itself overnight.”

“Harvick admitted that this particular race truck has been fast for the last several weeks. He also acknowledged that he had to go into fuel conservation mode for the final green, white, checkered finish.

“They’ve been working hard on a lot of things to make the truck better,” Harvick said of his team. “You just have to not make mistakes.”

“They told me we were good on fuel and I knew I had saved at least a couple laps of gas,” Harvick continued. “All in all I think the fuel mileage thing went out the window with all the cautions.”

“And then it was all about track position, which was important.”

When asked what difference the marathon, two-day race meant to Harvick, it apparently at least meant him getting out of bed a bit earlier than normal on a Cup race day.

“I feel like I’m a lot more awake than I would have been,” Harvick said with a laugh. “It just never hurts to get out and get in the rhythm.”

“You just have to change your suit and go back after it this afternoon.”

With his Pocono Truck win, Harvick also secured his own place in history by tying Bobby Hamilton for 12th on the all-time Series wins list.

Bruce Cook, Harvick’s crew chief, echoed his driver’s assessment of the race truck and the fuel situation. But he also admitted that he had little to no sleep because of the rain delay from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning.

“Our truck was really good,” Cook said. “Having the rain basically meant not sleeping overnight.”

“We knew we were close right off the bat,” Cook said of the fuel mileage challenges. “But with the caution coming out, we were OK on fuel.”

“Kevin took over conserving but there were no major concerns,” Cook continued. “The race speaks for itself.”

Kyle Busch finished in the runner up position. The driver of the No. 18 CocoaVia.com Toyota scored his first top-10 finish at a track that he has always found a bit tricky.

This was Busch’s ninth top-10 finish in 2011.

“It certainly was a good run for us, yesterday and today,” Busch said. “We unloaded here Friday and felt we were pretty decent off the truck but we were definitely off the 2 truck. He was stellar.”

“We just tried to minimize our losses and come out of here with the best finish we could,” Busch continued. “A few of those cautions helped us and fortunately that moved us back up to second.”

“It was fun racing the trucks here and it was certainly entertaining.”

Young up and coming driver James Buescher, behind the wheel of the No. 31 Wolfpack Rentals Chevrolet  came in third, posting his first top-10 finish at Pocono Raceway.

“It was definitely a good day for us,” Buescher said. “We unloaded really fast off the truck yesterday or two days ago, whenever we practiced.”

“We worked hard to find a good balance,” Buescher continued. “It’s been a good race yesterday and today.”

“It was a good day for us and we’re on a roll.”

Joey Coulter, another up and coming driver, was the highest finishing rookie. The driver of the No. 22 Darrell Gwynn Foundation/RCR Graphics Center Chevrolet finished sixth.

“It went well,” Coulter said. “It was a drag race until the end.”

“It was pretty wild,” Coulter continued. “It was probably the most fun race I’ve been in.”

Johnny Sauter, behind the wheel of the No. 13 SafeAuto/Carrier/Curb Records Chevrolet, and Austin Dillon, driving the No. 3 Bass Pro Shop[s/Tracker Boats Chevrolet, rounded out the top five.

Unfortunately, point leader Sauter failed post race inspection with his right rear exceeding the height regulation. NASCAR advised to expect penalties on Tuesday of next week.

  • Peters wins the NCWTS AAA Insurance 200 at LOR

Peters wins the NCWTS AAA Insurance 200 at LOR

Timothy Peters passed James Buescher for the lead with six laps to go and went on to win Friday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) AAA Insurance 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway.

“I can’t say enough about the guys on this Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra in victory lane tonight. We had a tire coming apart. I spun out over here in turns one and two and came down pit road. Butch Hylton (crew chief) made a great call to put four tires on. But the guys do a phenomenal job. We had a little hiccup last week, but they made up for it this week. Like I said last week, I love my guys.  They get me on and off pit road well.” Peters said.

[media-credit name=”Jason Smith/Getty Images for NASCAR” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]Peters started 16th and spun just before the halfway point when a tire went down. “I went down in the corner and I had good grip, and all of a sudden, I lost it.” Peters said.

But Peters battled back to second place with 20-laps remaining. He slowly closed the gap on Buescher and made the pass to win what might be the final truck series race at the speedway. “I was trying to be patient, trying to be patient with the throttle, and it paid off.” Peters said. “I hope that they bring the trucks back here, and I hope that I’m not the last winner here. But if they do take it away, I can sit back home in my La-Z-Boy one day, retired, and say I won the last race there. That’s pretty cool.”

Buescher led 97 laps and finished second, David Starr third, rookie Miguel Paludo tied his best-career finished, fourth (Daytona in February) and Ron Hornaday finished fifth.

“We were running good sometimes and something happens. I’m really proud of my guys. We’re a little bit off in practice, like three-tenths and they made changes. It was better for qualifying and race trim was a tick better. Our first pit, Rick (Gay, crew chief) did an awesome call and we were good — we were really consistent. Congrats to Timothy (Peters) for the win and our two (Red Horse Racing) trucks in the top-four is pretty good.” Paludo said.

Johnny Sauter leads the series standings by 4-points over Austin Dillon.

The series heads to Pocono Raceway on August 6th for the Good Sam RV Emergency Road Service 125.

Austin Dillon Claims First Victory at Nashville

As middle Tennessee resident suffered the effects of an unusual heat wave, with the heat index surpassing 100 degrees for multiple days, NASCAR teams arrived in Nashville for the second race weekend of the year at the Nashville Superspeedway.

[media-credit name=”Joe Dunn” align=”alignright” width=”200″][/media-credit]As the premier series, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams enjoyed a weekend off, the second and third tier series began arriving in the Music City on Thursday.. The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series teams spent Thursday setting up in the makeshift garage area to make final adjustments to the trucks as they filed through NASCAR inspection.

Friday began with a couple of practice session for the Trucks, followed by qualifying. With only 34 entries to fill the 36 truck field, none of the teams needed be concerned about missing the race and only ran for starting positions.

To the surprise of few observers, the Richard Childress Racing teams of Austin Dillon and Joey Coulter easily captured the front row. Absent from the field were frequent Cup Series regulars Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick.

Off to a quick start, the yellow flew quick on lap 5 as Johanna Long spun her number 20 Toyota in turn two. The field went back green 3 laps later and Long returned to the track. Dillon held the lead for 29 laps before being overtaken by Timothy Peters in the #17 Toyota. Peters held the lead until green flag pit stops began on lap 55 and the lead changed three times before Peters regained it on lap 63. Peters held that lead through lap 103 when a debris caution came out. On lap 104 Austin Dillon took the lead for two laps before surrendering it to Johnny Sauter.

Sauter would lead the field for 21 laps when Dillon took it back on lap 128. That would be the final change as Dillon outran the field for the final 23 laps, taking the checkered flag on lap 150. Finishing second was Johnny Sauter followed by Timothy Peters, Nelson Piquet Jr fifth, Todd Bodine, James Buescher, David Starr, Elliott Sadler and Joey Coulter rounding out the top 10.

The win was Dillon’s first of the 2011 season and the third of his 39 starts in the series. Johnny Sauter leads the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series points following the race, 18 points ahead of Dillon.

The NASCAR Nationwide Series takes to the track Saturday at 6:30 local time (7:30 EDT)

  • Crafton nudges Dillon for second career win

Crafton nudges Dillon for second career win

    [media-credit name=”Kyle Ocker” align=”alignright” width=”229″][/media-credit]

Matt Crafton broke a 79 race winless streak and recorded his second win at Iowa Speedway on Saturday, nudging defending race winner Austin Dillon by two car lengths at the stripe.

Crafton’s last win came at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 16, 2008. His victory also broke the streak of pole winners going on to win the race at Iowa Speedway’s two races.

“It’s a huge momentum builder.  It was awesome. It was a long time since 2008.” Crafton said.

Dillon dominated for most of the night until a bad late pit stop placed him back in eight place on the restart.

“I don’t know what happened. I saw they stumbled in the front, lost a tire. Never got an explanation. My guys do a great job on pit row, and (Saturday) night wasn’t their night.” Dillon said.

Pole sitter David Mayhew led a few laps at the beginning of the race, finishing third. Johnny Sauter and Joey Coulter rounded out the top five finishers.

Dillon fell short of making it a Dillon family sweep after his brother Ty Dillon won the ARCA Series race held before the Truck Series event.

Dillon now trails Sauter by 22 points in the Camping World Truck Series driver standings.

“I’m really proud of Matt tonight, he earned this win. ThorSport Racing just moved all its racing operations this week into the new shop, and the guys are all working overtime. To come out here and get a win and a top five finish after a really long week in the shop, that’s pretty amazing. We had more in us on the No. 13 Safe Auto/Karl Chevrolet team tonight, but we’ll take a top five after all that happened to us in this race. It’s a solid finish, and we’ll build on that into Nashville.” Sauter said.

Kyle Busch Claims 5th Truck Victory of 2011

For Kentucky Speedway the UNOH 225 NASCAR Camping World Truck series race the kick off to the biggest weekend in the track’s history. The track joined a small group of NASCAR tracks that can boost of running all three of NASCAR’s top series on the same weekend and all night races at that.

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”238″][/media-credit]To go along with the multi-series events, Kyle Busch began the weekend by winning the Truck series race. The win Thursday night marks his 5th win of the 2011 Truck series season and his 29th overall in the series,

But Busch had to work a bit harder for this win. On a day where he ran a 4 hr Cup practice, two Nationwide series practices and then winning the pole in Truck series qualifying, he showed up seconds late for the driver’s meeting. That slip up forced him to start the race from the back of the field.

It took Kyle 61 laps to finally work his way back to the number 1 position, but he remained up front for the rest of the night leading twice for a total of 61 laps, the most by a single driver. He faced late race challenges by Nelson Piquet, Johnny Sauter, Joey Coulter and finally Parker Kligerman, but held them all off to take the checkered flag on a G/W/C finish at lap 152.

Following Busch across the line were Kligerman, Brendan Gaughan, Todd Bodine and Jason White. Rounding out the top ten were Elliott Sadler, Coulter, David Starr, James Buescher and Travis Kvapil.

The NASCAR Nationwide Series 11th annual Feed the Children 300 is up next Friday night at Kentucky Speedway as Busch looks to claim victory number two for the weekend.

Busch wins the NCWTS UNOH 225 at Kentucky Speedway

Kyle Busch held off Parker Kligerman on the final green-white-checkered restart and won Thursday nights NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) UNOH 225 at Kentucky Speedway. This was Busch’s fifth NCWTS this season and his 29th in this series.

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”226″][/media-credit]“On the restart, when Jason White was on my inside, I figured if I could just get another good restart where I didn’t spin my tires, I’d be all right. Those guys spun their tires every time, and it kind of worked for us.” Busch said.

This is also Busch’s 98th NASCAR career win, placing him third all-time (29-NSCS, 48-NNS).

Brendan Gaughan finished third, Todd Bodine fourth and Jason White finished fifth.

Despite finishing 24th after his truck broke its rear axle, series points leader Johnny Sauter extended his lead to 23 points over Cole Whitt.

Ron Hornaday Wins the WinStar World Casino 400k at Texas Motor Speedway

In a race that had a record number of leaders and lead changes, it was Ron Hornaday winning the WinStar World Casino 400k after a controversial call on the last lap.

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”272″][/media-credit]On the final green white checkered finish, Johnny Sauter had the lead and chose to start on the outside. Before crossing the start finish line, Sauter came down in front of Hornaday, which is a no-no as according to the NASCAR rulebook. Rules states clearly that you must stay in your lane until you cross the line. As a result, Sauter was black flagged, handing the win over to Hornaday.

“I’m not going to go down that way and judge,” he said. “I saw him sliding down and once he figured it out, he went back up there. I kind of saved my stuff just in case that happened there. It’s just an unbelievable day. I’ll take it.”

The win marks the 48th career win for Hornaday and his third win at Texas Motor Speedway.

“The way our year has been going, we’re gaining on them, but we’re still not right yet,” he added. “These guys never lay back. Thanks to Kevin and Delana for believing in me.”

Sauter, meanwhile, was credited with a 22nd place finish as the last truck on the lead lap.

“He’s got a lane to race down there,” Sauter said of NASCAR’s call. “We both spun the tires. I was just trying to save the truck.”

Parker Kligermann, meanwhile, came home second as he scored his best career finish in 10 starts.

“I just wanna thank these guys right here,” Kligermann said. “We don’t go to the wind tunnel; we don’t do shake-rig testing. They gave me an awesome truck and its about making the best of these opportunities. I owe to them since Phoenix and to know that we’re one spot away from right there (victory lane), is good.”

David Mayhew also scored his best career finish in five starts as he finished third in his first start with Kevin Harvick Incorporated.

“We had a really good truck,” Mayhew said. “I gotta thank Kevin and Delana Harvick and all these guys at KHI. Without this opportunity, you won’t be able to run like guys like that. Those guys made awesome adjustments on pit road and kept working on it.”

For Brian Ickler, he was able to rebound to finish fourth after spinning out on lap 50 after contact with Todd Bodine.

“We had a good truck all weekend,” Ickler said. “Bodine and I got into it in there and we spun out but we came back up there. I gotta thank Kyle and Samantha for the opportunity. I get to this one more time at Iowa and can’t wait.”

Joey Coulter rounded out the top-five in fifth, matching the fifth place finish last week at Kansas. Ricky Carmichael finished sixth, followed by Ryan Sieg, Miguel Paludo, Justin Lofton and pole sitter James Buescher. Buescher came back to finish 10th after getting frontend damage midway through the race.

Buescher started the race from the pole, though on lap four, Austin Dillon took the lead before the first caution for oil on the track at lap five. The restart would come at lap 10 and Buescher would jump back to first, till lap 15 when Dillon grabbed it back.

The second caution came out on lap 23 for Chase Mattiolli going for a spin and all the leaders pitted with Steve Arpin, who was making his first ever Camping World Truck Series start, coming off pit road first. The restart came at lap 27 and by lap 31, Dillon was already back in the lead.

The third caution came out at lap 51 for Brian Ickler spinning and the leaders would pit again, though Dillon would hold serve. The restart came at lap 56, though another caution would come out at lap 59 for Ryan Sieg spinning. The restart would come at lap 63 and on lap 64, Johnny Sauter jumped into the lead.

The fifth caution came out at lap 66 for David Starr and Todd Bodine making contact.

“I shouldn’t had been back there racing them,” Bodine said. “I could’ve stayed behind him or went under and I chose the wrong one of the two.”

Some of the lead trucks pitted while nine didn’t, which handed the lead to Nelson Piquet Jr. when the restart came at lap 72. He was able to hold the lead till lap 75 when Miguel Paludo would take over the top spot, till he got passed by Joey Coulter at lap 83.

The sixth caution would come at lap 90 when Austin Dillon and Matt Crafton made contact as Crafton tried to slide up in front of Dillon, thinking he was clear.

“I guess he just got a run there the last second,” Crafton said. “He wasn’t there, he wasn’t there and then he was there and I tried to back off and tried to turn left, but couldn’t cause I was free and then I got hooked on the front straightaway. Kind of a hard way to go down.”

Once again, some drivers pitted while others stayed out, which handed the lead over to Ron Hornaday for the lap 95 restart, though he’d only hold it till lap 100 when Sauter would once again take it over.

The seventh caution would come out when Cole Whitt would blow up and everybody pitted, except Ryan Sieg who stayed out. The restart came with 55 to go and the race would only stay green for five laps as the eighth caution would fly when Justin Marks would go for a spin. Sieg pitted under the caution, giving the lead back to Hornaday. The restart came with 45 to go and with 37 to go, Sauter would go back to the front.

The ninth caution came out with 30 to go with Steve Arpin would get loose, making contact with Austin Dillon, sending them both into the grass. The restart came five laps later and Sauter would lead all the way to the final caution with seven to go when Clay Rogers got into the wall.

The race would go back to green with the green-white-checkered, which is where the call was made against Sauter. On the final lap, Travis Kvapil and Johanna Long made heavy contact with the wall as Kvapil got loose coming off of turn four.

Sauter now leads Whitt in the point standings by 12 points as they’re followed by Dillon, Crafton and Timothy Peters.

The next race for the Camping World Truck Series is on Thursday July 7th at Kentucky Speedway.

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photo” align=”alignright” width=”268″][/media-credit]Clint Bowyer dominated Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race by leading 124-laps of the 167-laps run at Kansas Speedway in route to his first victory in his home state.

“I’m so happy to finally be in victory lane here,” Bowyer said.

This win also stopped Kyle Busch’s three-race winning streak. Busch battled his car all day and finished sixth.

Johnny Sauter finished second, Todd Bodine third, James Buescher fourth and Joey Coulter finished fifth.

Sauter also took over the series points standings by 12 over rookie Cole Whitt.

“I couldn’t be any prouder of everybody at ThorSport (Racing),” Sauter said.

Busch takes the checkers in the NCWTS North Carolina Education Lottery 200

Kyle ‘Rowdy’ Busch claimed the checkers in his 28th career Camping World Truck Series Race. Busch, led the last seven laps in Friday’s North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He joins driving legends Mike Skinner and Jack Sprague in second place on the all-time truck series win list. However, for Busch, the numbers do not stop there. He brings his NASCAR career total to 97 wins. This monumental number puts Busch in the elite company of Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip, and tied for third in NASCAR wins.

The race win did not come easy for the defending race winner. Busch spun early, but used his talent to keep the No. 18 green NOS Tundra off the wall, losing only a few positions on the racetrack.

Kyle Busch Motorsports in conjunction with Speedway Children’s Charities raced in remembrance of 10-year-old Zahra Baker, who was tragically murdered last September. A photo of Baker adorned the passenger side window of Busch’s No. 18 truck. Following his win, Busch dedicated his win to her memory.

The Charlotte Motor Speedway was not kind to the Camping World Truck Series Drivers. Point’s leader Matt Crafton was collected in an early caution involving Max Papis and Brendan Gaughan. Crafton’s misfortune opened the door for rookie Cole Whitt to lead the point standings as the trucks leave Charlotte and head to Kansas in two weeks.

Defending champion Todd Bodine and veteran wheeler Ron Hornaday were both victims of cautions during the race. The field collectively brought out 10 caution flags.

Polesitter Timothy Peters, No. 17 GearWrench Red Horse Racing Toyota claimed the pole for Friday’s race, in his 100th career start. However, his night came to a quick end after his machine struck the outside wall.

Sprint Cup Series driver Clint Bowyer powered his Kevin Harvick owned entry to a second place finish. Rookie Cole Whitt backed up his Dover finish with a great third place run. James Buescher and Ron Hornaday rounded out the top five. Sixth place belonged to Johnny Sauter. Post race activity on the track saw Hornaday and Sauter in a heated discussion about on track racing. Austin Dillon, Parker Klingerman, Justin Marks and Brad Sweet rounded out the top 10.

Formula 1 Champion Kimi Raikkonen strapped into the No. 15 Perky Jerky Toyota Tundra owned by Kyle Busch Motorsports for his NASCAR debut on 1.5 mile oval of Charlotte Motor Speedway. Raikkonen joined past Formula 1 drivers Nelson Piquet Jr. and Max Papis in Friday night’s internationally charged event.

“I really want him to have success,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said of Raikkonen’s debut. “I hope that he runs well and enjoys his experience. I like to see people come in and get opportunities. I like to really see people that come in and have never seen our sport, heard about it and maybe heard good and bad things come in here and leave with a great impressions,” Earnhardt continued. “That makes me feel proud of being a part of it for as long as I have. I think that he will get a good impression. I think he’ll enjoy what he is going to get himself into.”

Raikkonen qualified in the 31st starting position and finished his evening in the 15th finishing spot.

“Expectations for Kimi (Raikkonen) tonight are pretty simple,” said car owner Kyle Busch. “Just try to get him to run all the laps, try to get him to gain some experience, get out there with some other trucks, try to drive the truck a little harder, and get a feel for it.”

The opportunity to have Raikkonen drive for Kyle Busch Motorsports came about after his agent contacted the team. The discussions were quick and Charlotte was the track of choice. This is just preliminary and there are not indications that Raikkonen will move to a Nationwide team anytime soon.
