    Larson Holds off Logano to Win the XFINITY Series Race at Fontana

    Kyle Larson held off Joey Logano on the final restart with four laps to go to win Saturday’s Service King 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA.

    “It was a lot of fun with Joey there late,” Larson said. “I hope it gives us some good momentum. We’ll start from the pole and hopefully be here again (Sunday).”

    Larson’s Chip Ganassi Racing No. 42 Chevrolet won by 0.127 seconds over Logano to earn his sixth career win in the Xfinity Series and the second at Fontana, his home state.

    “The racing there at the end with Joey was awesome. A heck of a race. I honestly didn’t think we’d be here yesterday.” Larson said.

    Logano started from the pole, led five times for 70 laps and finished second.

    “I knew he was a little better than us. I think he had two or three lap better tires than me, which was surprising that he continued to stay faster the whole run. We raced the heck out of each other. I had a lot of fun racing with him. It was a good time, and he was faster than me.” Logano said.

    Kyle Busch won the race’s opening two stages finished third, Erik Jones fourth and rookie William Byron finished fifth.

    Elliott Sadler remains the NASCAR Xfinity Series point standings by 17 points over William Byron.

    The Xfinity Series has next week of then heads to Texas Motor Speedway on April 8.

    NASCAR Racing Schedule for Auto Club Speedway

    The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and the XFINITY Series head to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana California for the final stop of “NASCAR Goes West.” First up is the NXS Service King 300 on Saturday at 4 p.m. on FS1. The MENCS Auto Club 400 wraps up the weekend’s activities on Sunday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX.

    Saturday’s Service King 300 will consist of three stages. Stages 1 and 2 will be 35 laps each in length with a final stage of 80 laps (150 total laps). The Cup Series Auto Club 400 is also comprised of three stages. Stages 1 and 2 will be 60 laps each while the final stage will be 80 laps (200 total laps).

    Allgaier Triumphs at Phoenix, Wins Dash 4 Cash Prize

    AVONDALE, Ariz. — Justin Allgaier popped a tire during his celebratory burnout after Saturday’s DC Solar 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.

    But you can forgive the driver of the No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet if he was a trifle rusty with his donuts — Allgaier hadn’t been to Victory Lane in the NASCAR XFINITY Series since August in 2012 at the road course in Montreal.

    On a blistering afternoon that brought emotions to a boil at the 1-mile race track in the Sonoran Desert, Allgaier sailed away with a magnificent restart with four laps left and finished .741 seconds ahead of runner-up Ryan Blaney, who started 33rd after inspection issues kept him off the grid during qualifying earlier in the day.

    “You have no idea how proud I am of you,” Allgaier radioed to his team after he crossed the finish line and broke an 80-race drought.

    After climbing from the car, Allgaier began to digest what he had just accomplished, not the least of which was claiming the $100,000 bonus in the first Dash 4 Cash race of the season. The victory was Allgaier’s fourth in the series.

    “Last year was tough,” Allgaier said of a winless 2016, his first year with JRM. “We had really good runs all year but we weren’t able to get to Victory Lane. This was the same group of guys we had last year, and to be able to do it here in Phoenix and win the first XFINITY Dash 4 Cash race. …

    “This is a team effort. We had four really good JR Motorsports hot rods out there.”

    In fact, with polesitter William Byron running fourth and series leader Elliott Sadler coming home fifth, JRM put three cars in the top five and four in the top nine (with Michael Annett finishing ninth).

    With 10 laps left, contact from Cole Custer’s Ford sent Austin Dillon’s No. 2 Chevrolet hard into the outside wall, collecting Ryan Sieg’s Chevrolet in the process. After caution flew on Lap 191, Dillon rode Custer’s car into the outside wall, earning a summons to the NASCAR hauler for Dillon and crew chief Justin Alexander.

    “He over-drove the corner and took us out with it,” Dillon said after exiting the infield care center.

    Dillon wasn’t particularly apprehensive about the meeting with NASCAR.

    “We’ll probably just have a Coke and discuss things,” he said optimistically.

    Custer took full responsibility for the incident.

    “It was 100 percent my fault,” said the Sunoco rookie driver. “I got in there too deep, got really loose going in and couldn’t put any wheel into it. That was pretty much it. Just all my fault, something that won’t happen again. We had a great race leading up to that.

    “We didn’t start out at all how we wanted to, but by the end, we were probably a fifth to eighth-place car. I thought that was a really good sign for us. I thought we had a really good Haas Automation Ford.

    It’s unfortunate I cost us and the 2 car there.”

    Under the circumstances, Custer wasn’t surprised at Dillon’s retaliation.

    “It definitely sucks for us points-wise, but I guess you can kind of expect that when he gets taken out,” Custer said. “I can understand how frustrated he is about it. It is what it is. I will try not to have that happen again.”

    NASCAR Racing Schedule for Phoenix

    NASCAR heads to Phoenix Raceway this weekend as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and XFINITY Series compete at the one-mile oval. Saturday’s XFINITY Series DC Solar 200 will be broadcast at 4 p.m. on FOX. The Cup Series Camping World 500 will be televised on FOX at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

    The Camping World 500 will be comprised of three stages. Stages 1 and 2 will consist of 75 laps each with a final stage of 162 laps. Saturday’s XFINITY Series DC Solar 200 will also have three stages. Stages 1 and 2 will consist of 60 laps each with a final stage of 80 laps.

    Kevin Harvick is the defending race winner and has the second-best driver rating (110.7) at Phoenix with eight wins, 13 top fives, 17 top 10s and one pole. Jimmie Johnson has the best driver rating (111.2) at the track and has earned four wins, 15 top fives, 19 top 10s and three poles. Chase Elliott, still looking for his first Cup win, has the third-best driver rating of 103.9.

    Joey Logano Holds off Kyle Larson for NASCAR XFINITY Win at Las Vegas

    LAS VEGAS – Saturday’s Boyd Gaming 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway wasn’t a drag race, but lane choice proved critical to Joey Logano’s 28th NASCAR XFINITY Series victory in the No. 12 Team Penske Ford.

    Choosing the top side for a restart on Lap 196 of 200, after Ty Dillon’s spin on Lap 192 necessitated the ninth and final caution of the afternoon, Logano cleared Kyle Larson off Turn 4 after an intense side-by-side battle and pulled away to win by .602 seconds.

    “It was hard to figure out what to do, what lane to pick,” said Logano, who has won in each of his last three starts in the 12 car. “The one thing we did know is that we had a very fast Ford Mustang.

    “(Crew chief) Brian Wilson and all the guys that bring this 12 car out, that’s three wins in a row for the 12 car, so that’s something I’m proud to be a part of and work with these guys. … It was a challenging day from the restart standpoint.”

    If lane choice was essential in the late stages of the race, the decision not to pit at the end of Stage 2, after pitting under the previous caution on Lap 72, was a key element to winning the race. That choice flipped track position and gave Logano the lead for a restart on Lap 99, a position he maintained through four subsequent restarts.

    The ability to hold off polesitter Kyle Busch on older tires gave Logano confidence in the capability of his car.

    “Man, it’s a lot of fun to have these Team Penske cars fast again in the XFINITY Series,” said Logano who led 106 laps in winning for the first time this season in his first-ever Las Vegas start in the series. “Man, it feels good.

    “But those restarts were crazy, though. You don’t know which lane to pick. You don’t know who is a good pusher. You try to remember what happened on the last (restart).”

    Logano took over eighth place all-time in career NASCAR XFINITY Series victories.

    Busch led each of the 45 laps in Stage 1 but faded to seventh at the finish after the handling of his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota deteriorated in the second half of the race.

    Brad Keselowski, Logano’s teammate, won Stage 2, but Keselowski brought the No. 22 Mustang to pit road for an unscheduled stop on Lap 108 because of a loose wheel and recovered to finish 10th.

    Daniel Suarez ran third, followed by Justin Allgaier—the highest-finishing series regular–Austin Dillon and Darrell Wallace Jr.

    Larson said a push from Suarez on the final restart might have helped him, but that assistance didn’t materialize.

    “I needed Daniel to push me and not pull out (of line),” Larson said. “I think if Daniel would have ever gotten to my back bumper to help me, he probably would have taken that opportunity to pull out and pass me. 

    “It would have been hard to clear Joey, but I definitely needed some help behind me.”

    Elliott Sadler finished eighth to retain the series lead by four points over Daytona winner Ryan Reed, who came home seventh.

    NASCAR Racing Schedule for Las Vegas

    NASCAR heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway as it begins a three-race west coast stint. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and the XFINITY Series will both compete this weekend. The XFINITY Series Boyd Gaming 300 will be televised on FS1 Saturday at 4 p.m. Sunday’s Cup Series Kobalt 400 will be broadcast on FOX at 3:30 p.m. with a scheduled green flag start at 3:46 p.m.

    The Kobalt 400 event will be comprised of three stages. Stage 1 and 2 will consist of 80 laps each with a final stage of 107 laps (267 total laps). Saturday’s XFINITY Series Boyd Gaming 300 will also consist of three stages. Stage 1 and 2 will each be 45 laps in length with a final stage of 110 laps (200 total laps).

    Brad Keselowski has the momentum heading into this weekend’s competition with his win at Atlanta Motor Speedway last week and is also the defending Cup Series race winner at Las Vegas. In eight starts at the 1.5-mile speedway, he has captured two victories (2014, 2016) with three top fives and 10 top 10s.

    The White Zone: The XFINITY Series is a joke

    HAMPTON, Ga. — The NASCAR XFINITY Series and The Simpsons have something in common: They’re both husks of their former glory and only occasionally produce something serviceable to good, but nothing spectacular.

    Once upon a time, the XFINITY Series was a NASCAR touring series that put on decent racing, ran separate from the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series many weekends and had a good mix of battle-tested veterans and rookies seeking to make a name for themselves. Only occasionally did it have the Cup interloper when the series was a companion event to the Cup race.

    Minus the number of standalone events, this description fits mostly well on the current NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

    The series I see now is nothing more than a contradiction that’s dominated by Cup drivers and runs an almost identical schedule to the Cup Series. The quality of racing ranges from mediocre at best to abysmal most weekends. During standalone weekends, the quality is hit or miss.

    A textbook example of how bad the racing is now is this past weekend’s XFINITY race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

    Cup drivers led from start to finish. Brad Keselowski won the first stage, Kevin Harvick won the second stage and Kyle Busch won the race. There was also a two-car wreck at the start with Ty Dillon and Blake Koch.

    That was the race in only 40 words.

    Oh a few other things happened as well, but those are the events that mattered in it. It doesn’t matter in the slightest that Elliott Sadler left with a three-point lead over William Byron. Those will just reset prior to the start of the Chase, I’m mean “playoffs,” in September.

    Let’s not forget the apologists for Cup drivers in XFINITY “hand waving” the lousy driving by saying the rookies gain “valuable experience” learning from the veteran Cup drivers. Take this line from Michael Waltrip in yesterday’s broadcast of the Rinnai 250 on FS1.

    “How lucky are we in 2017 these kids mixing it up with these veterans?!”

    I don’t know what race Waltrip was watching, but it wasn’t the same XFINITY race that was led start to finish by all Cup drivers. They were in a different time zone all day long.

    Oh and to top off yesterday, Busch’s car failed post-race inspection. But he keeps the win, so any penalty that results means absolutely nothing. The owners titles? That means nothing to anybody other than the owners. And even then, it’s small fry compared to the drivers title. It’s a discussion for another article, but NASCAR has incentivized teams with drivers not running for a drivers title in the XFINITY Series, and the Camping World Truck Series by extension, to run illegal race cars/trucks in order to win the race. You keep the win, pay a fine and lose a crew chief for a few weeks.

    Expect to see more of this same scenario, minus a car failing post-race inspection, week after week this season.

    And this isn’t an isolated race. This has been the trend for years. Last season, XFINITY drivers won only 12 of the 33 races. Only five different XFINITY drivers won and only three of them were full-time XFINITY drivers. Nine full-time Cup drivers — Chase Elliott, Kyle Busch, Austin Dillon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, Aric Almirola, Joey Logano and Michael McDowell — won the other 21.

    Compare this to the 1982 XFINITY Series season, the inaugural season of the then NASCAR Budweiser Late Model Sportsman Series. Seven primarily Cup drivers — Dale Earnhardt, Geoffrey Bodine, Morgan Shepherd, Joe Ruttman and Darrell Waltrip — won just nine of the 29 races. Granted, only five drivers ran all 29 races, but these were drivers who primarily ran XFINITY in their career.

    The only saving grace this season might be that NASCAR has put a cap on the number of races a Cup driver can run in the lower divisions, with the caveat of not applying to drivers with less than five years of full-time Cup experience.

    And just so I don’t come off as “too cynical,” I’ll offer some solutions to bring some respect back to the XFINITY Series.

    FIRST: NASCAR must acknowledge that the XFINITY Series in its current state is garbage.

    Nothing will change until the NASCAR executives in Daytona Beach accept the reality that the “No. 2 auto racing series in the United States” rings hollow with the NASCAR nation when the quality of its racing is so atrocious.

    1.5: Acknowledge that the XFINITY Series is nothing more than Cup-Lite.

    Matt Weaver of Autoweek sums up the argument in his piece A broken NASCAR Xfinity Series: Can it be fixed?.

    “Many will respond, ‘Just enjoy the racing,’ but that’s a tall task given the current schedule and on-track product. More than ever before, Xfinity is simply a carbon copy of its Sprint Cup older brother.

    “Like a clone, it has no soul, no personality and no purpose other than to add another event to a track’s Sprint Cup race ticket.

    “All told, the Xfinity Series just isn’t a lot of fun right now.

    “At the height of the sport’s popularity, the old Busch Series was an exciting alternative to the Cup Series. It spent months at a time apart from the premier division, visiting tracks like Indianapolis Raceway Park, Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville, Gateway and Myrtle Beach.”

    Weaver is right on the money. The series is just weekend filler. In fact, these are some of the same arguments lobbed towards The Simpsons. But whereas The Simpsons will still produce an episode that shows a spark of their former greatness, there’s hardly any of that with the XFINITY Series.

    It’s hard to “enjoy the racing” when the race for the lead is between Cup drivers who won’t fight for the title in the XFINITY Series and the current arrangement of the schedule favors the downforce-heavy 1.5 mile tracks of the Cup Series over the short track-centric schedule that once defined the XFINITY Series.

    This leads me to my next point.

    SECOND: DIVERSIFY THE SCHEDULE!!!

    While there’s hardly any spark of greatness with the modern XFINITY Series, I did see some of it this past season during a five-race stretch that lasted from Iowa in July to Road America in August. During that stretch, the XFINITY Series visited the short track of Iowa Speedway, the road course of Watkins Glen International, the road course of the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, the short track of Bristol Motor Speedway and the road course of Road America. Only two of those events, Watkins Glen and Bristol, were companion events to Cup.

    I watched that Bristol XFINITY race from the press box in the middle of Turns 3 and 4 and never found myself once disinterested in what was going on, even though a Cup driver won the race.

    And that leads me to my final point.

    THIRD: Cup drivers have to go.

    To those who say we need Cup drivers to bring in more fans, I’ll take that argument seriously when NASCAR requires tracks to publish attendance figures again. Why should I, or anyone else, care if Cup drivers are necessary for drawing crowds when this sport isn’t transparent about their own attendance figures, except when its a “sellout?” You can just look at the stands yourself on any raceday and see the crowds are abysmal. The Cup drivers aren’t drawing a crowd that legitimizes the argument.

    The only argument that has any merit is Cup drivers bring in sponsorship. But it’s kind of a self-defeating argument because it shows just how little the series can sustain on its own merits. It also begs the question, why does NASCAR continue using the tagline “Names are made here” when we’re told tracks need Cup drivers to draw a crowd?

    This is a classic case of having your cake and eating it too. NASCAR, you can’t continue having Cup drivers in XFINITY whilst promoting as the series where names are made, at least if you want people to take it seriously.

    Alas, it’s probably too little too late for the XFINITY Series.

    We beg and plead with people to pack the standalone races at tracks such as Iowa and Kentucky to the nosebleeds to show NASCAR that people want more standalone races, but it doesn’t work.

    At this point, the XFINITY Series is damned to being a shell of its former self that only once in a while puts on a decent race.

    Again, maybe the cap NASCAR put on Cup participation this season will prove me wrong, but I’m not holding my breath.

    Kyle Busch Wins Cup Dominated XFINITY Race at Atlanta

    HAMPTON, Ga. — A Cup driver dominated and won the first stage, a Cup driver dominated and won the second stage and a Cup driver dominated and won the XFINITY Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway dominated by Cup drivers.

    Right off the bat, Kyle Busch led the first eight laps before Brad Keselowski passed under him on the backstretch to take the lead on the ninth lap. Keselowski maintained a one to two second advantage over Busch the remaining 31 laps to win the first stage.

    He led most of the second stage, but lost the lead to Kevin Harvick on lap 62 and Harvick won the stage.

    Harvick led most of the final stage that was interrupted by a caution halfway through, but Kyle Larson took command of the race. He lost the lead on pit road to Busch pitting under caution. Keselowski tried to challenge Busch in the closing laps by taking advantage of lapped traffic, but it proved too little too late and Busch took the checkered flag.

    It’s Busch’s 89th career victory in 329 XFINITY Series starts.

    Larson came home third, Harvick finished fourth and Elliott Sadler rounded out the top-five.

    Darrell Wallace Jr., William Byron, Austin Dillon

    The only wreck in the race involved Ty Dillon and Blake Koch on the second lap. Entering Turn 1, Dillon cut his left-rear tire and spun out. Koch dove onto the apron to avoid him, but wound up t-boned him.

    Denny Hamlin spun out on the frontstretch after suffering a flat left-rear tire, which was caused by running over a lug nut after making an unscheduled stop for a flat right-front tire.

    Justin Allgaier and Brennan Poole made unscheduled stops during the first stage for flat tires.

    The race lasted one hour, 57 minutes and 16 seconds at an average speed of 128.435 mph. There were six lead changes among four different drivers and five cautions for 26 laps.

    Kyle Busch Captures Pole for XFINITY Race at Atlanta

    HAMPTON, Ga. — Kyle Busch will lead the field to the green flag after taking pole position at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

    The driver of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota won the Coors Light Pole Award after posting a time of 30.153 and a speed of 183.862 mph. William Byron will start second in his No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet after posting a time of 30.167 and a speed of 183.777 mph and Brad Keselowski will start third in his No. 22 Team Penske Ford after posting a time of 30.186 and a speed of 183.661 mph.

    Kyle Larson will start fourth in his No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet after posting a time of 30.241 and a speed of 183.237 mph as Denny Hamlin rounded out the top-five in his No. 20 JGR Toyota after posting a time of 30.278 and a speed of 183.103 mph.

    Daniel Hemric, Matt Tifft, Cole Custer, Brendan Gaughan and Ryan Reed round out the top-10 starters.

    Brennan Poole and Kevin Harvick round out the top-10 starters.

    Carl Long, Mike Harmon and Morgan Shepherd failed to make the race.

    NASCAR Racing Schedule for Atlanta

    NASCAR heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway with all three series for a full weekend of competition. The NASCAR XFINITY Series (2 p.m.) and the Camping World Truck Series (4:30 p.m.) races will be televised on FS1 Saturday. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 will be broadcast on FOX at 2:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

    The Cup Series event will be comprised of three stages. Stage 1 and 2 will consist of 85 laps each with a final stage of 155 laps (325 laps total).

    Jimmie Johnson, the defending race winner, has the most victories at Atlanta among active drivers, with five, and swept the 2015-2016 races. He also has the series-best driver rating of 107.1. Daytona 500 champ, Kurt Busch, won the Atlanta pole last year and has three victories at the 1.54-mile track.
