  • Regan Smith Pulls Last Lap Move For XFINITY Win At Mid-Ohio

Regan Smith Pulls Last Lap Move For XFINITY Win At Mid-Ohio

    By Chris Knight
    NASCAR Wire Service

    LEXINGTON, Ohio—What a difference a week makes.

After experiencing pure frustration last weekend at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, Regan Smith answered his second road course race of the season with a bump-and-run on leader Alex Tagliani in the second-to-last corner on the last lap to score his first NASCAR XFINITY Series win of the season in Saturday’s Nationwide Children’s Hospital 200 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

The short-track-like move ended a 52-race winless streak for Smith driving the No. 7 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports.

“These guys work their butts off all week,” said Smith after earning his fifth career win. “This car was destroyed door tops down, they rebuilt it in one day. The guys back at the shop phenomenal job, my road guys have stuck behind me for a while. We’ve had a lot of opportunities to win. I hate to do it in the last corner, but it’s been too long, a long time, I wasn’t going to pass the opportunity up.

“I’ve been wrecked so many times on these road courses, I had to do what I had to do right there. I didn’t spin him, just got the spot. We’re going to celebrate hard tonight.”

Tagliani, who was searching for his first XFINITY Series victory in seven races, had to settle for a disappointing second after taking the lead from Smith with 15 laps remaining.

“If I knew that he was going to win like that probably instead of passing him fair and square early on in the race, I would have probably pushed him off a bit,” said Tagliani. “But, he knows I’m not going to be there next weekend to retaliate.”

In his first XFINITY Series race of the season, Tagliani scored his third career Coors Light Pole in the No. 22 Team Penske Ford and jumped to the early lead, separating himself by more than 1.2 seconds over defending race winner Chris Buescher until the first caution of the day on Lap 6 for a stalled car on the backstretch.

With pit strategy already on the minds of crew chiefs, many of the leaders elected to pit early, but Boris Said stayed out and inherited the lead for the restart. Said’s time at the front was short-lived, as he was immediately challenged on the restart by reigning XFINITY Series champion Chase Elliott, who took the lead in Turn 1.

Elliott led until Lap 12 when the second caution waved for Kenny Habul. Leaders Elliott and Said pitted, with Elliott Sadler assuming the top spot briefly before Buescher grabbed control from his Roush Fenway Racing teammate.

Following the third caution of the race, Tagliani swiped the lead from Buescher in Turn 3, only to have his momentum stalled by a caution for fluid on the race track.

Tagliani maintained the race lead through the halfway point.

Under a Lap 41 yellow, the majority of the field made their final scheduled pit stop, with Smith claiming the lead after pit stops and the racing resuming with 30 laps remaining.

Despite another yellow flag for fluid on the track, the leaders elected to stay out.

Racing resumed with 20 laps to go with Smith easily escaping from the furry of furious side-by-side action behind him. Tagliani, though, quickly emerged from the pack and set his sights on Smith, setting up to reassume command on Lap 61 and set the tone for the thrilling finish.

Buescher leads Ty Dillon by 24 points in the XFINITY Series standings.

  • Penske Dominates, Tempers Flare after XFINITY Race at The Glen

Penske Dominates, Tempers Flare after XFINITY Race at The Glen

Another Zippo 200 for the NASCAR XFINITY Series is in the books, and in traditional form, this afternoon’s edition was nothing less than exciting. When the dust settled, it was Joey Logano overcoming adversity and taking the checkered flag here at Watkins Glen International.

Starting from the pole, Logano quickly jumped out to an early lead ahead of the likes of teammate Brad Keselowski, defending NASCAR XFINITY Series Champion Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson running double duty this weekend, and Chris Buescher.

It only took 23 laps for the fireworks to start when the No. 12 Snap-on Ford hit pit road from the lead. What looked to be a solid pit stop for Logano ended in disaster when the gas can was left in the car as he exited his pit box. The gas can came to rest in the middle of pit road, resulting in the second caution of the day. The mistake gave him a trip to the rear of the field for the restart on lap 26.

Over the next 20 laps, Logano would pick his way through the field from 29th, making his way to the bumper of the race leader and his teammate, Brad Keselowski, by lap 28. The No. 12 would take the lead on the next lap, and never turned back. He was able to weather the storm of two late-race restarts and win the 2015 edition of the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International.

Logano talked about Penske’s domination at The Glen and his trip from the front, to the back, and to the front again in Victory Lane, stating, “It’s fun to have a car that is that fast. When you’re out there racing your teammate for the win, it shows a lot about our organization. I was a little bit worried I wasn’t going to get back to the front after that penalty. I was mainly nervous about accidents and crashes that happen here and you get caught up in a lot of times. I felt like my car was fast enough to get to them, but I didn’t know if I was going to get by them all.”

The win today is Logano’s fourth victory of 2015, the 25th of his career, and his first at Watkins Glen International.

The Penske domination wasn’t the only headline of the day. As they generally do, tempers flared once again at Watkins Glen between a few drivers who were jockeying for position on the late-race restarts. Regan Smith, who started eighth and ran toward the front all day, took issue with a few fellow competitors after the race. Smith exited his car on Pit Road immediately following the race with his sights set on Brendan Gaughan and Ty Dillon. After a few words in the cockpit window of the No. 62 South Point Chevrolet, he headed for Dillon who had been finishing up an interview.

Smith’s discussion with Dillon was short, immediately turning into a shoving match. Dillon, who was apologetic about the late-race incident where he dove underneath Smith on the final restart, spinning the No. 7 car as a result. Following the scuffle, Smith, who is in the heat of a points battle with Dillon, had this to say about the incident.

“I got dumped in Turn 1,” Smith said, “and I wasn’t the only one who got dumped today either. I may have lost the championship today, but he did too. There is zero chance that No. 3 car wins this championship. We’re going to make sure of it.”

Chris Buescher remains the NASCAR XFINITY points leader after his third place finish today in the Zippo 200. He leads Chase Elliott by 24 points going into the second of three road course races in a row for the Nascar XFINITY Series. Elliott finished a rocky day in seventh.

Be sure to follow all the action tomorrow as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series takes the stage for the 30th Annual Cheez-It 355 at The Glen.

  • Blaney Holds On To Win In Overtime At Iowa

Blaney Holds On To Win In Overtime At Iowa

    By Rob Gray

NEWTON, Iowa – As the cautions — and wreckage — piled up, Ryan Blaney didn’t blink.

Trouble reigned for most in the late tension-filled stages of the U.S. Cellular 250 NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Iowa Speedway, but the driver of the No. 22 Discount Tire Ford remained calm and poised.

    Seemed so, anyway.

“It’s not ideal,” Blaney said of four cautions in the final 20 scheduled laps that interrupted his stirring Saturday night run to Victory Lane. “At all. You have a great car and those late cautions are just chances to give it away.”

    Not Saturday.

Blaney’s turn at the wheel put the Team Penske No. 22 in Victory Lane at Iowa for the third straight August. Brad Keselowski drove it to wins each of the past two seasons.

Blaney led an astounding 252 laps of 260, churning out the most dominant performance in his young career and first series win of the season after three runner-up finishes.

“It’s crazy that you lead more laps than the race is actually scheduled for,” Blaney’s crew chief, Greg Erwin, said.

Crazy indeed, but fitting for Blaney, who felt he had “given away” last weekend’s Lilly Diabetes 250 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to Kyle Busch, who made a last-lap pass.

“It really speaks a lot to this team,” Blaney said. “(They gave me) a great race car.”

Regan Smith finished a season-best second and Brian Scott took third. Ty Dillon and Brendan Gaughan — who took a late shot at Blaney that slightly damaged both cars — completed the top five.

Blaney simply shined from the start.

He swiftly passed Coors Light polesitter Daniel Suarez after the green flag flew and led the first 146 laps — or 50 more than his previous best total he amassed while notching his first series win at Kentucky in 2013.

The first hiccup: Trailing Smith for four laps after easing off pit road on Lap 147 slightly behind him.

The next green flag erased that issue.

On Lap 151 Blaney surged to the front again and set a blistering pace in clean air, virtually unchallenged.

But one more pit stop was required and Chase Elliott — who powered to second during the late stages— beat Blaney off pit road.

A change in the evening’s balance of power?

    Hardly.

Blaney quickly swept past Elliott and never looked back — except to survey the misfortunes of others.

Eight cautions marred the event, with six coming after Lap 205.

Elliott drew one after contact with Brandon Jones sent him spinning into the wall on Lap 231.

He recovered to finish ninth and sits 20 points behind standings leader Chris Buescher, who was collected in the multi-car wreck that came on the first attempt at a green-white-checkered finish.

    Buescher settled for 13th.

Kenny Wallace, who made his record 547th and final appearance with the series, spun twice. He ended up 15th.

Blaney’s No. 22 sustained some damage on the first green-white-checkered attempt as Brendan Gaughan tried to make a run to his low side, but didn’t clear his left rear.

No hard feelings, Blaney said. Just good, hard racing.

“Wouldn’t want it any other way,” Blaney said.

Still, the twisted metal gave Smith hope — until he missed his mark on the final restart.

“He went a lot earlier than I anticipated,” said Smith, who notched his best finish this season. “It was my fault for not being ready.”

No one could mount much for Blaney all night.

Blaney led every green flag lap. He led 160 more laps than he’s ever led in an XFINITY Series race.

And his first win of 2015 came at a track where he snared his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series win in 2012.

“Just a fun place,” said Blaney, whose 252 laps led, unsurprisingly, proved to be a track record. “We’ve always had good runs here.”

  • Busch Makes Last Lap Pass to Win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Busch Makes Last Lap Pass to Win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Kyle Busch, in the No.54 Monster Energy Toyota, made a last lap pass on Ryan Blaney, driver of the No.22 Discount Tire Ford, to score his 72nd career victory in the NASCAR XFINITY Series and his second win in four starts at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Blaney started 11th and ran in the top-3 most of the day before taking the lead from Busch on lap 75 of the 100 lap race. Blaney would lead the next 24 laps before Busch made the pass on lap 99.

After the race and his second place finish, Blaney was asked if this was his toughest loss in NASCAR.

“Yeah, pretty easy. Not many can say they had a chance to win at the Brickyard and gave it away, but I did just that,” he said. “I think I’m the only one in that category, so I’m leading that category but that’s definitely gonna sting for a long time.”

Busch started on the pole with a qualifying lap of 180.527 mph and led 53 laps.

“I just got close enough to make him mess up and made him get tight off two and then I was able to capitalize underneath him with him losing his momentum off of two and being able to get under him,” said Busch following the race.

Daniel Suarez, driving the Joe Gibbs Racing, No.18 ARRIS Toyota, started second and finished in the third position in his first start at the famed speedway. His second place finish was his 8th top-10 finish in 18 starts this year.

Suarez said, “First of all I want to congratulate my teammate and good friend Kyle (Busch). He’s been doing amazing and I’ve been learning a lot from him. I think thanks to that, we are where we are right now. We have to keep working, keep learning and I’m pretty sure we’re going to get our checkered flag soon.”

Paul Menard finished in the fourth position in his No.33 Menards Chevrolet, followed by fifth place finisher, Elliott Sadler in the No.6 OneMain Financial Ford.

Chris Buescher retains his points lead over Chase Elliott and Ty Dillon. Buescher finished in 16th place, Elliott finished 10th, and last year’s winner, Ty Dillon, finished in the 9th position.

There were eight lead changes among six drivers and three caution flags for 16 laps.

  • NASCAR Racing Schedule for Indianapolis Motor Speedway

NASCAR Racing Schedule for Indianapolis Motor Speedway

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and XFINITY Series travel to Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend. All Sprint Cup and XFINITY Series practices, qualifying sessions and races will be televised on NBC Sports Live Extra as indicated.

NASCAR will debut a new aero race package at Indianapolis with increased downforce that is designed to add drag to the car and create a drafting effect that will increase opportunities for closer racing and lead changes. The new setup includes a 43-inch radiator pan (increased from 38 inches), a two-inch splitter leading edge, a one-inch wicker bill and a nine-inch spoiler (increased from six inches).

Qualifying will consist of two rounds with each driver posting a single timed lap. The qualifying order for the first round will be set by a random draw. NASCAR will release drivers at intervals to prevent a second vehicle from impeding or helping another vehicle.

There will be a 10-minute break between rounds. During this break, teams can make adjustments but will only be allowed to adjust tape and use a cool-down fan during the break.

The top 12 drivers from round one will advance to the second and final round. Positions 1-12 will be determined by the fastest laps in this final session.

  • Denny Hamlin’s XFINITY Win at New Hampshire Leaves Austin Dillon Steaming

Denny Hamlin’s XFINITY Win at New Hampshire Leaves Austin Dillon Steaming

    By Reid Spencer

LOUDON, N.H. – To Denny Hamlin, it was just hard short-track racing for the win.

To runner-up Austin Dillon, it was unnecessarily aggressive driving that led to Hamlin’s victory in the Lakes Region 200 NASCAR XFINITY Series race on Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

On Lap 179 of 200 at the Magic Mile, Hamlin drove his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to the inside of Dillon’s No. 33 Chevrolet. Hamlin slid up the track into Dillon, broke the No. 33’s momentum and took the lead.

Eventual third- and fourth-place finishers Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch also passed Dillon, who later regained the positions he lost to Keselowski and Busch but ran out of time in his pursuit of Hamlin.

Earlier in the race Hamlin had two similar incidents with Busch, his teammate. And though Busch didn’t appear particularly annoyed with Hamlin’s tactics, Dillon was incensed.

“He got to me, and I figured he was going to race, but he never even wanted to,” Dillon said. “He wrecked his teammate and then proceeded to try and wreck me, and if I had gotten back to him, it would have happened to him.”

Hamlin wrote off the contact to all-out racing at a one-mile flat track.

“The bottom line is, if you don’t have any air on the outside of you, you just can’t hold it,” Hamlin said. “There was an example of that about three times today … I want to thank ‘Wheels’ (crew chief Mike Wheeler) for giving me the dominant car. We had the best car, and just, wow, what a day.”

In Hamlin’s view, Dillon wasn’t blameless either.

“Well, he jumped the restart, for one,” Hamlin said. “I’m the control car, but that’s fine. Eventually I was going to get back around him anyway. Same thing—I was a fender ahead, and he drove in there knowing that he was going to have to hold me low to hold the position, and I just washed up into him.

“But that’s two guys on a short track racing for the win.”

Dillon clearly had a different opinion.

“What is racing, if you can’t race side-by-side for more than a corner?” Dillon asked rhetorically. “He never even went through a corner with me, the whole race. He didn’t want to. He just moved me. Missed the corner. Wrecked me.

“I’m fine with racing rough. I promise you, I can do it to anybody. But if we’re going to race like that, I need to know before you get to the first corner. Give me a corner at least.”

Dillon indicated there might be some payback in the offing but wouldn’t reveal how or when.

“I’m not going to talk about it,” Dillon said. “He won’t be ready.”

Hamlin’s reply? “We’ve both got race cars.”

Dillon got the lead on Lap 175 moments after a restart following the sixth and final caution for Brian Scott’s blown engine.

Both Hamlin and Dillon had stayed out on old tires under the previous yellow, but Keselowski came to pit road for fresh rubber on Lap 142. As it turned out, the new tires made little difference.

“It was the right call and probably got us to third, instead of fourth or fifth,” Keselowski said. “We just weren’t as fast as the 33 and 20 were. … We just weren’t fast enough this weekend.”

Rookie Daniel Suarez ran fifth, followed by Ty Dillon, Regan Smith, Darrell Wallace Jr., Chase Elliott and Brennan Poole. Series leader Chris Buescher finished 14th, one lap down, and saw his lead in the standings shrink to 31 points over second-place Elliott.
