  • Chris Buescher Coasts on Fumes to Checkered Flag in Buckle Up 200

Chris Buescher Coasts on Fumes to Checkered Flag in Buckle Up 200

After contact with his teammate Darrell Wallace Jr., Chris Buescher gambled on fuel and nursed his No. 60 Roush Performance Products Ford to the checkered flag in the Buckle Up 200 at the Monster Mile. This was also Buescher’s first victory in three races at Dover International Speedway.

“I never know what to believe and you never know how much you need to save,” Buescher said. “We were really just trying to go easy on the throttle and then at the end, we just had to let it coast at least half of the straightaway.”

“It was really tough to do and I felt like we were going really slow,” Buescher said. “You have to convince yourself to do it. But we made it to the end and we had enough to do a burnout.”

“It was nerve-wracking for sure,” Scott Graves, Buescher’s crew chief said. “You know you’re close and you don’t know exactly how much it was going to take. But we knew we were going to be OK when everyone else came in and we had a lap to play with at the end.”

“Once we got down to that point, I was feeling better about it.”

This is Buescher’s second Xfinity Series win of the season and with the win, he maintained the points lead over Ty Dillon by 15 points.

Buescher’s victory, however, was not without controversy due to the contact with teammate Bubba Wallace, who cut a tire and soldiered on to finish a disappointing 17th.

“It is my teammate so I can’t really say much,” Wallace said. “I asked the spotter after the race and he said we got run over. I was saving fuel there and Chris just ran over me and he ends up winning.”

“It should be interesting Monday morning. We just got run over. It sucks that it was my teammate,” Wallace continued. “I was saving fuel. I didn’t think I was holding him tight and the next thing you know we are almost in the fence.”

“The crappy part about it is we had a really strong Ford EcoBoost Mustang and we couldn’t get off pit road to save us and we got caught in dirty air and then we were in fuel saving mode. I thought we were doing okay until that little incident. I would say I am happy Roush won but I am not.”

Matt Kenseth, behind the wheel of the No. 20 Reser’s Toyota, overcame an early tire issue to finish in the runner up position.

“We had a great race car and I actually thought it was all going to work out for us,” Kenseth said. “I had to pit out of sequence and that let us a set of tires short. We got to stay out and lead some at the end and I honestly didn’t think that anyone could run that long on fuel.”

“We came up a little short but we had a really, really fast race car.”

This was Kenseth’s 13th top-10 finish in 21 races at the Monster Mile and is his third top-10 finish in the 2015 season.

Regan Smith, driver of the No. 7 Breyers Chevrolet, took the checkered flag in the third spot. He also scored the $100,000 Dash for Cash honors provided by the Xfinity Series.

“We had to work hard overnight because I didn’t like where the race car was,” Smith said. “They made good adjustments and we had very fast pit stops.”

“Fuel mileage races are frustrating though,” Smith continued. “I haven’t been on the good end of one yet. Disappointed about that but proud of the effort today.”

Smith advised that he had a child so that is where he intended to utilize the $100,000 bonus from the Dash for Cash. This was Smith’s fourth top-10 finish in 11 races at the Monster Mile.

In spite of it being his nineteenth birthday, Erik Jones suffered another heartbreak in the Xfinity Series race after disappointment in the Truck race the night before. Jones missed pit road and then got a speeding penalty to boot, however, was able to soldier on to finish in the ninth position.

“I just missed it,” Jones said. “It’s tough to get onto pit road here. I should have practiced it. It just didn’t work out at the end.”

There was also another crash involving Ryan Blaney, Brian Scott and Jamie Dick. The initial incident was between Blaney and Brian Scott, the latter of whom started spinning. Unfortunately, Jamie Dick then plowed into Scott with violent impact.

“The 22 (Blaney) was kind of out of control and he got real loose off (Turn) 4 so I got a run to his inside going into Turn 1. I just feel like he didn’t give me any room,” Scott said. “I went in there and he was stuck to my door. It just caused me to just suck around. As soon as I turned down in the corner I was loose.”

“It sucks. I guess it’s a product of restarts here at Dover. That (second hit) hurt.”

The 18 slipped a little bit off of four and the 2 got inside of us and must have got loose or something,” Blaney said. “Unfortunately we got in the fence there. It was unfortunate because I would have liked to see where it went.”

“It was only lap 50 and I wish we could have raced more than that. They put it back together and we got what we got. It has been a rough last couple weeks for us. Hopefully we can get it turned around eventually.”

Austin Dillon finished fourth, Kasey Kahne fifth and Chase Elliott, Brendan Gaughan, Ty Dillon, Erik Jones and Jeremy Clements rounded out the top-ten.

  • Buescher Tames the Monster; Scores Roush Fenway’s 17th Win at Dover

Buescher Tames the Monster; Scores Roush Fenway’s 17th Win at Dover

Roush Fenway scores NASCAR record-extending 321st win

DOVER, Del. (May 20, 2015) – Roush Fenway Racing’s Chris Buescher took over the race lead with 10 laps remaining inSaturday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series race at the ‘Monster Mile’ of Dover International Speedway and was able to hang on, conserving enough fuel in his No. 60 Roush Performance Ford for the final 10 miles, as the XFINITY points leader claimed his second victory in the last three races.  Buescher started the race on the outside of the front row by pole winner and teammate Bubba Wallace. After the one-two start, the two battled late for the lead, before Wallace had to pit with a flat tire after the two Fords made contact.

“Almost impossible,” Buescher said of his third career XFINITY Series win. “They were telling me we needed to get a couple laps and I was lifting 10 car lengths early and they were telling me to lift another 50 early. I was clutching it a lot those last 15 laps trying to save all we had there and get all we could. I felt we were still keeping a pretty consistent pace and we were able to get the lead there and it was a matter of setting our own pace and holding on.

“That was tough,” said Buescher of the late battle with Wallace. “We are sitting there and he was saving a lot more fuel than I was because they were shorter and I was able to run into the corner harder but I couldn’t do anything with the track being pretty narrow and two guys racing for the win.

“We got side by side and it got pretty free but this Roush Mustang was good all weekend. The race wasn’t exactly where we needed to be but then (crew chief) Scott Graves pulled great strategy and the team did a nice job and we got to victory lane with this Ford.”

Wallace, who led 52 laps after starting on the pole, had to settle for a 17th-place finish. Ryan Reed scored an 11th-place finish, while Elliott Sadler rounded out the Roush Fenway effort at Dover in 21st.

The win is Roush Fenway’s sixth in the XFINITY Series at Dover and its 17th NASCAR victory at the ‘Monster Mile’. Wallace’s pole is Roush Fenway’s third in the NXS at Dover and its 11th in NASCAR action.

In addition, the victory was Roush Fenway’s record-extending 321st win in NASCAR competition. It was the team’s record 136thvictory in the NASCAR XFINITY Series.  It is also the record extending 93rd victory for the No. 60 Ford under the Roush Fenway umbrella.

With the lead Buescher extended his XFINITY Series points lead to 15, and he is joined in the top eight in the standings by Wallace (5th), Sadler (6th) and Reed (8th).  Roush Fenway has now one three times this season in XFINITY action.

  • Austin Dillon Dominates NASCAR XFINITY Race at Charlotte

Austin Dillon Dominates NASCAR XFINITY Race at Charlotte

    By Reid Spencer

CONCORD, N.C. – For the second straight Saturday, Denny Hamlin had the chance to hold off a race’s strongest car for the victory.

Unlike last Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, however, there were too many laps left after the final restart in Saturday’s Hisense 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series, and polesitter Austin Dillon powered past Hamlin on Lap 186 of 200 to finish the race where he belonged—at the front of the field.

By the time he crossed the finish line, Dillon was 2.692 seconds ahead of Hamlin, who had taken the lead during a restart on Lap 167 that saw Dillon fall back to fourth from the inside lane by the time the leaders exited Turn 2.

One by one, Dillon picked off Regan Smith, Kahne and Hamlin on the way to his second XFINITY Series victory of the season, his first at Charlotte and the fourth of his career.

Kahne ran third behind Dillon and Hamlin, followed by Smith and rookies Darrell Wallace Jr. and Daniel Suarez. Ty Dillon came home seventh and trimmed the series lead of 11th-place finisher Chris Buescher to four points.

Dillon led 163 laps and held an advantage of more than six seconds during a 54-lap green-flag run that preceded the second caution of the race on Lap 110.

How good was Dillon’s No. 33 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet?

“I didn’t want to get out of this thing,” Dillon said in Victory Lane. “This thing drove so good. It was a heck of a race there with Denny at the end and Kasey (Kahne). I had to go right there in lapped traffic (to make the winning pass).

“I knew if I didn’t hurry up and get in front of him right there, the tires might equalize (in terms of grip).”

But when Dillon picked the inside lane for what proved to be the final restart—after a caution for Kyle Fowler’s wreck in Turn 1—Hamlin seized what he considered a fortuitous opportunity and surged into the lead.

“I thought when the 33 gave us the outside, that was a big advantage for us if we could stay with him through Turns 1 and 2,” said Hamlin, who last Saturday held off Kevin Harvick in the final 10-lap shootout to win the all-star race. “We (did), and it allowed us to get position on him and even get him shuffled a few spots.

“That was all good, but his car was just so fast he just overcame that track position.”

Hamlin lost the lead when the lapped car of Peyton Sellers stayed low and forced Hamlin’s No. 54 Toyota to pass on the outside.

“I needed to stay on the bottom,” Hamlin said. “My car was best on the bottom. His car was pinned to the bottom as well. So I needed all of the lapped cars to move up high, and all of them did, except for the 97 (Sellers). He gave us the high line. That just killed us and killed our chances from that point, once the 33 got to our inside.”

Dillon chose the inside line because his car had worked well on the bottom for the entire race to that point.

“My spotter (Andy Houston) made the fact that we should have probably taken the top, and I had been on the bottom all day, so I chose the bottom again,” Dillon said. “I just didn’t want to let these guys down (his crew). The Rheem car was so fast…

“I thought about it, and I probably should have used the top, just because I would have had the run down the backstretch. It seems that, as the race goes on, that the outside can stop spinning the tires, and the rubber lays down…

“Andy made the point, and it all worked out, but I’ll definitely learn from that, for sure.”

Smith, Wallace, Suarez and Ty Dillon qualified for next week’s XFINITY Dash4Cash competition at Dover as the top four finishers among series regulars. Those drivers will compete for $100,000 in next Saturday’s race at Dover, with the top finisher among them claiming the prize.

  • Chris Buescher Wins in Thrilling Finish at Iowa Speedway

Chris Buescher Wins in Thrilling Finish at Iowa Speedway

    By: Robert Gray

NEWTON, Iowa — Chris Buescher and all but one driver battling at the front of the pack yearned for one last caution.

    The lone exception?

Chase Elliott, who, fully fueled, had powered to a commanding lead and near-certain win in Sunday’s NASCAR XFINITY Series 3M 250 at Iowa Speedway.

Two laps remained. Elliott’s trip to Victory Lane loomed. Then, it happened.

Jamie Dick, running mid-pack, hit the wall and spun, drawing a caution flag.

Buescher — his No. 60 Roush Fenway Racing Ford packed with fuel and four fresh tires — smiled, charging hard and low on the restart to cap a temper-tinged and thrill-filled race with a green-white-checkered triumph at the 7/8-mile short track.

“When that happened, I knew we had an awesome shot at it,” said Buescher, who raced to the series standings lead by eight points over Ty Dillon, who finished 14th.

Buescher had on-track help — namely from Roush Fenway teammate, Darrell Wallace Jr., who provided a strong nudge as the race went green.

    Maybe more than a nudge.

“(He) gave us a heck of a shot on the restart,” said Buescher, who relegated Elliott to second while notching his first win of the season and Roush Fenway’s fifth in 11 XFINITY Series races at Iowa. “It was a hard hit. That was almost a crash. It was exactly what we needed to get going and get to the inside and be able to pull this win off.”

Elliott took the runner-up finish in stride. He led 114 laps. His car ran fast all day long. The late-race pit strategy — partly because of minor right-side damage, he pitted on lap 177 while other leaders stayed out — nearly paid off.

“That’s racing some days,” said Elliott, who like Buescher enjoys a series-leading five top-five finishes this season. “You make a decision — and I think it was a good one. We had some right-side damage and it was good to come in and make sure that was OK rather than to face the opposite of that, cutting down a tire and have a day like we did in Talladega. So I think it was the right move.”

Erik Jones climbed from 35th to take third. Brian Scott and Ryan Blaney completed the top five.

Jones started near the rear of the field because Drew Herring qualified the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 Toyota on the pole while Jones remained in Charlotte.

By the Lap 60 competition caution, Jones had raced into the top 10, but couldn’t find enough speed in the ensuing laps to advance past third.

“We worked ourselves into a good position,” Jones said. “A long day coming from the back.”

Buescher — who raced outside the top 10 in both XFINITY Series Iowa races last season — merely needed to come from the second row.

He’d reluctantly accepted the waning laps would mostly entail driving in “points mode,” as Dillon had pitted late after running in the top eight most of the day.

“I hate points racing,” Buescher said. “I despise it. When that caution came out — watched it happen right in front of me — it was like, All right, this is it. This is what we need. We need to come in and get some tires and get back rolling here.’”

That he did, right to the top, for now, at least.

    “This is big,” Buescher said.

Black Flag: The race was marred by a temper-stoked wreck. Brennan Poole — who felt rival J.J. Yeley had struck him intentionally early in the race — spun Yeley out on lap 153. Yeley’s car sustained damage, but he was unharmed. Poole drew the black flag and told the Motorsports Racing Network, “It happens.” Yeley said the early-race encounter was unintentional and described his mood as “very furious.”

“Hopefully NASCAR gets a hold of him before I do,” Yeley added.

  • Logano Emerges From Pack on Final Lap to Win Wild Winn-Dixie 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series Race at Talladega Superspeedway

Logano Emerges From Pack on Final Lap to Win Wild Winn-Dixie 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series Race at Talladega Superspeedway

TALLADEGA, AL – With cars bouncing off each other like bingo balls for the final eight laps, Joey Logano emerged from the fray to claim victory in the Winn-Dixie 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series race Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway.

Drivers jockeyed for position throughout the closing laps following a restart with eight to go. When the packed roared out of Turn 4 and toward the checkered flag, the cars fanned out four wide across the trioval, with Logano barely leading the way. He crossed the finish line 0.130 seconds ahead of Brian Scott, giving him his 24th victory in 140 XFINITY Series starts and his second win at Talladega.

“That was crazy,” Logano declared in Victory Lane. “It’s a combination of the old-school draft and the cars hooking up and bumping. It’s so fun and so intense the whole time out there. There is never a Talladega win that comes easy, or that isn’t intense at the end of the race. You never know you have it until the end.”

That was the case once again on Saturday, as Logano and Chris Buescher were running side-by-side coming off Turn 4, with another half-dozen or so cars close behind in hot pursuit. Logano managed to inch just far enough ahead of Buescher heading into the tri-oval that he was able to move up the track and slow Buescher’s momentum.

“We were close,” said Buescher, who got shuffled back to a sixth-place finish. “He blocked us when we had that final run that we needed there at the end. We just couldn’t do anything with it. We had a good chance out there, it just didn’t quite work out.

Scott was running in sixth place coming out of Turn 3 but managed to stick close enough to the lead group and then took advantage of the chaos at the end to sneak into the runner-up position.

“I thought I was doomed when the top four started to break away, but I got a great run off Turn 4,” Scott said. “It’s a lot like a chess match out there. You have to be so careful not to put yourself in a bad spot. Because you can make one bad move and go from the top five to 10th real quick. I’ve done that before. So at least I feel like I’m getting smarter at the end of these things to be able to make the moves to gain positions.”

The final few laps were so intense that Austin Dillon, who finished third, said he actually cut his wrist because he was gripping the steering wheel so hard. “That was fun right there. I had a blast,” Dillon said. “It was definitely exciting there at the end.”

Or, as fifth-place finisher Joey Gase said, “Talladega, man. That was insane.”

J.J. Yeley was fourth. Sixth through 10th included defending Winn-Dixie 300 champion Elliott Sadler, followed by Ty Dillon, Regan Smith and Aric Almirola. Ty Dillon is the series point’s leader, ahead of Buescher by nine points.

There were six cautions for 31 laps. Logano averaged 126.901 mph.

  • Denny Hamlin Dominates XFINITY Series Race at Richmond

Denny Hamlin Dominates XFINITY Series Race at Richmond

    RICHMOND, Va.—Domination must be contagious.

Six days after Joey Logano led all 300 laps in the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Bristol, Denny Hamlin led 248 of 250 circuits in winning Friday night’s ToyotaCare 250 at Richmond International Raceway.

The only two laps that spoiled a Hamlin no-hitter were Brian Scott’s dive bomb off Turn 4 to lead Lap 154 by inches and Elliott Sadler’s contrarian fuel strategy, which allowed him to lead Lap 226 during a cycle of green-flag pit stops before Hamlin, on fresh tires, roared back past him on Lap 227.

Aside from those fleeting moments, however, it was no contest.

“He was so fast—we had nothing for him,” said Logano, who could keep Hamlin in sight for five or six laps after a restart, only to have the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota drive away. “We had a second-place car. That’s where it was, just second place.

“I know what it feels like to be on the other end of the butt-whipping now. It’s not as much fun from this side. But congrats to them. They deserved it, obviously. We didn’t have a shot.”

In winning the 12th NASCAR XFINITY Series race of his career, his first of the season and his third at Richmond, Hamlin held leads as large as 6.5 seconds and crossed the finish line 3.719 seconds ahead of Logano, with just eight cars on the lead lap.

Regan Smith was third, followed by Erik Jones, Chase Elliott, and rookie Daniel Suarez, as Joe Gibbs Racing placed three drivers in the top six (Hamlin, Jones and Suarez).

The victory was the 100th for Toyota in the XFINITY Series.

“The 100th XFINITY win for Toyota—that’s a big one,” Hamlin said. “I was able to get the 100th [NASCAR Sprint] Cup win at Loudon a few years ago for those guys and JGR. This is a big win for everyone. I’m glad to be working with Wheels again (crew chief Mike Wheeler). He put a rocket under us tonight.”

Given the way he ran on Friday, Hamlin seemed fully recovered from the neck spasms that sidelined him during last Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Bristol.

Quick action by emergency workers prevented a potential tragedy on pit road during pit stops under the second caution of the race.

A spark ignited spilled fuel behind the car of Brendan Gaughan, engulfing rear tire changer Anthony O’Brien in a fireball that was quickly extinguished, Nevertheless, O’Brien, Gaughan’s fueler, Josh Wittman, and Clifford Turner, a crew member from Eric McClure’s team were taken to a local hospital for treatment and observation as a result of the incident.

Note: Series leader Ty Dillon finished ninth and holds an eight-point lead over second-place Elliott, the defending series champion. Chris Buescher, who entered the event tied with Dillon, finished 20th and fell to third in the standings, 11 points back.
